Measurement of $CP$ asymmetries in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 γ$ decays at Belle II

Abstract: We report measurements of time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 γ$ decays based on a data sample of $(388\pm6)\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector. The Belle II experiment operates at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure decay-time distributions to determine $CP$-violating parameters $S$ and $C$. We det… ▽ More We report measurements of time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 γ$ decays based on a data sample of $(388\pm6)\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector. The Belle II experiment operates at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure decay-time distributions to determine $CP$-violating parameters $S$ and $C$. We determine these parameters for two ranges of $K^0_S π^0$ invariant mass: $m(K^0_S π^0)\in (0.8, 1.0)$ $GeV/c^2$, which is dominated by $B^0 \to K^{*0} (\to K^0_S π^0) γ$ decays, and a complementary region $m(K^0_S π^0)\in (0.6, 0.8)\cup(1.0, 1.8)$ $GeV/c^2$. A Novel Quantum Realization of Jet Clustering in High-Energy Physics Experiments

Abstract: Exploring the application of quantum technologies to fundamental sciences holds the key to fostering innovation for both sides. In high-energy particle collisions, quarks and gluons are produced and immediately form collimated particle sprays known as jets. Accurate jet clustering is crucial as it retains the information of the originating quark or gluon and forms the basis for studying properties… ▽ More Exploring the application of quantum technologies to fundamental sciences holds the key to fostering innovation for both sides. In high-energy particle collisions, quarks and gluons are produced and immediately form collimated particle sprays known as jets. Accurate jet clustering is crucial as it retains the information of the originating quark or gluon and forms the basis for studying properties of the Higgs boson, which underlies teh mechanism of mass generation for subatomic particles. For the first time, by map** collision events into graphs--with particles as nodes and their angular separations as edges--we realize jet clustering using the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for addressing classical combinatorial optimization problems with available quantum resources. Our results, derived from 30 qubits on quantum computer simulator and 6 qubits on quantum computer hardware, demonstrate that jet clustering performance with QAOA is comparable with or even better than classical algorithms for a small-sized problem. This study highlights the feasibility of quantum computing to revolutionize jet clustering, bringing the practical application of quantum computing in high-energy physics experiments one step closer. △ Less

Measurement of branching fractions, CP asymmetry, and isospin asymmetry for $\boldsymbol{B\rightarrowργ}$ decays using Belle and Belle II data

Abstract: We present measurements of $B^{+}\rightarrowρ^{+}γ$ and $B^{0}\rightarrowρ^{0}γ$ decays using a combined data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and $387\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. After an optimized selection, a simultaneous fit to the Belle and Belle I… ▽ More We present measurements of $B^{+}\rightarrowρ^{+}γ$ and $B^{0}\rightarrowρ^{0}γ$ decays using a combined data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and $387\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. After an optimized selection, a simultaneous fit to the Belle and Belle II data sets yields $114\pm 12$ $B^{+}\rightarrowρ^{+}γ$ and $99\pm 12$ $B^{0}\rightarrowρ^{0}γ$ decays. The measured branching fractions are $(13.1^{+2.0 +1.3}_{-1.9 -1.2})\times 10^{-7}$ and $(7.5\pm 1.3^{+1.0}_{-0.8})\times 10^{-7}$ for $B^{+}\rightarrowρ^{+}γ$ and $B^{0}\rightarrowρ^{0}γ$ decays, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also measure the isospin asymmetry $A_{\rm I}(B\rightarrowργ)=(10.9^{+11.2 +7.8}_{-11.7 -7.3})\%$ and the direct CP asymmetry $A_{CP}(B^{+}\rightarrowρ^{+}γ)=(-8.2\pm 15.2^{+1.6}_{-1.2})\%$. △ Less

Abstract: The $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D_{s1}(2536)^-$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ processes are studied using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from 4.530 to 4.946~GeV. The absolute branching fractions of $D_{s1}(2536)^- \rightarrow \bar{D}^{*0}K^-$ and $D_{s2}^*(2573)^- \rightarrow \bar{D}^0K^-$ are measured for the first time to be… ▽ More The $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D_{s1}(2536)^-$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ processes are studied using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from 4.530 to 4.946~GeV. The absolute branching fractions of $D_{s1}(2536)^- \rightarrow \bar{D}^{*0}K^-$ and $D_{s2}^*(2573)^- \rightarrow \bar{D}^0K^-$ are measured for the first time to be $(35.9\pm 4.8\pm 3.5)\%$ and $(37.4\pm 3.1\pm 4.6)\%$, respectively. The measurements are in tension with predictions based on the assumption that the $D_{s1}(2536)$ and $D_{s2}^*(2573)$ are dominated by a bare $c\bar{s}$ component. The $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D_{s1}(2536)^-$ and $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ cross sections are measured, and a resonant structure at around 4.6~GeV with a width of 50~MeV is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of $15σ$ in the $e^+e^-\rightarrow D_s^+D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ process. It could be the $Y(4626)$ found by the Belle collaboration in the $D_s^+D_{s1}(2536)^{-}$ final state, since they have similar masses and widths. Evidence of $h_{b}(\text{2P}) \to Υ(\text{1S})η$ decay and search for $h_{b}(\text{1P,2P}) \to Υ(\text{1S})π^0$ with the Belle detector

Abstract: We report the first evidence for the $h_{b}(\text{2P}) \to Υ(\text{1S})η$ transition with a significance of $3.5$ standard deviations. The decay branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}[h_{b}(\text{2P}) \to Υ(\text{1S})η]=(7.1 ~^{+3.7} _{-3.2}\pm 0.8)\times10^{-3}$, which is noticeably smaller than expected. We also set upper limits on $π^0$ transitions of… ▽ More We report the first evidence for the $h_{b}(\text{2P}) \to Υ(\text{1S})η$ transition with a significance of $3.5$ standard deviations. Both results are compatible within their uncorrelated systematic uncertainties. The combined result is $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η)=(1.495 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.023)\times\,10^{-3}$ where the first uncertainty is the combined statistical uncertainty and the second one the combined systematic uncertainty of both analyses, incorporating correlations between them. Measurement of the integrated luminosity of data samples collected during 2019-2022 by the Belle II experiment

Abstract: Analyzing $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $7.33~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226~GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fraction of the semileptonic decay $D^+_{s}\to K^0 e^+ν_e$ to be $(2.98\pm0.23\pm0.12)\times10^{-3}$. The $D_s^+\to K^0$ hadronic form factor is determined from the differential dec… ▽ More Analyzing $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $7.33~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226~GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fraction of the semileptonic decay $D^+_{s}\to K^0 e^+ν_e$ to be $(2.98\pm0.23\pm0.12)\times10^{-3}$. The $D_s^+\to K^0$ hadronic form factor is determined from the differential decay rate of $D^+_s\to K^0 e^+ν_e$ to be $f^{K^0}_+(0)=0.636\pm0.049\pm0.013$. For both measurements, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The branching fraction and form factor measurements are factors of 1.6 and 1.7 more precise than the previous world averages, respectively. △ Less

Combining with the known branching fractions of $Λ_c^+ \to pK_{S}^{0}$, $Λ_c^+ \to pK_{S}^{0}π^+π^-$, and $Λ_c^+ \to pK_{S}^{0}π^0$, we present the first measurements of the $K_{S}^{0}$-$K_{L}^{0}$ asymmetries $R(Λ_c^+, K_{S,L}^0X) = \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+ \to K_{S}^{0} X) - \mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+ \to K_{L}^{0} X)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+ \to K_{S}^{0} X) + \mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+ \to K_{L}^{0} X)}$ in charmed baryon decays: $R(Λ_c^+, pK_{S,L}^0) = -0.025 \pm 0.031$, $R(Λ_c^+, pK_{S,L}^0π^+π^-) = -0.027 \pm 0.048$, and $R(Λ_c^+, pK_{S,L}^0π^0) =-0.015 \pm 0.046$. Fully heavy tetraquark resonant states with different flavors

Abstract: We use the quark potential model to calculate the mass spectrum of the S-wave fully heavy tetraquark systems with different flavors, including the $ bc\bar b\bar c, bb\bar c\bar c, cc\bar c\bar b $ and $ bb\bar b\bar c $ systems. We employ the Gaussian expansion method to solve the four-body Schrödinger equation, and the complex scaling method to identify resonant states. Among these states, the $ bc\bar b\bar c $ tetraquark states are the most promising ones to be discovered in the near future. We recommend the experimental exploration of the $ 1^{++} $ and $ 2^{++} $ $ bc\bar b\bar c $ states with masses near $ 13.3 $ GeV in the $ J/ψΥ$ channel. Abstract: Based on $2.7 \times 10^9~ψ(3686)$ decays collected with the BESIII detector, the radiative decay $ψ(3686)\to\gamma2(π^{+}π^{-})η$ is investigated to measure properties of S- and P-wave charmonium states. The branching fraction of the decay $η_{c}(1S) \to 2(π^{+}π^{-})η$, which is found to have a strong dependence on the interference pattern between $η_c(1S)$ and non-$η_c(1S)$ processes, is measur… ▽ More Based on $2.7 \times 10^9~ψ(3686)$ decays collected with the BESIII detector, the radiative decay $ψ(3686)\to\gamma2(π^{+}π^{-})η$ is investigated to measure properties of S- and P-wave charmonium states. The branching fraction of the decay $η_{c}(1S) \to 2(π^{+}π^{-})η$, which is found to have a strong dependence on the interference pattern between $η_c(1S)$ and non-$η_c(1S)$ processes, is measured in both destructive and constructive interference scenarios for the first time. The mass and width of the $η_{c}(1S)$ are measured to be $M=(2984.14 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.38)$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $Γ=(28.82 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.82)$ MeV, respectively. Clear signals for the decays of the $χ_{cJ}(J=0,1,2)$ and the $η_{c}(2S)$ to $2(π^{+}π^{-})η$ are also observed for the first time, and the corresponding branching fractions are measured. The ratio of the branching fractions between the $η_{c}(2S)$ and $η_{c}(1S)$ decays is significantly lower than the theoretical prediction, which might suggest different dynamics in their decays. △ Less

Abstract: We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight $\overline B{}^0\to D^{(*)+} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$, $B^{-}\to D^{(*)0} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $362~\text{fb}^{-1}$. The event yields are extracted… ▽ More We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight $\overline B{}^0\to D^{(*)+} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$, $B^{-}\to D^{(*)0} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $362~\text{fb}^{-1}$. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ meson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of $m(K^-K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ and $m(D^{(*)}K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of the $K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parity $J^P=1^-$ for the $K^-K_S^0$ systems and $J^P= 1^+$ for the $K^-K^{*0}$ systems. We also present measurements of the branching fractions of four $\overline B{}^0\to D^{(*)+} D_s^-$, $B^{-}\to D^{(*)0} D_s^- $ decay channels with a precision compatible to the current world averages. △ Less

Abstract: We present a measurement of the integrated luminosity of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at a center-of-mass energy of $E_{\rm cm} = 3.773$~GeV. LAYCAST: LAYered CAvern Surface Tracker at future electron-positron colliders

Abstract: We propose a detector concept, LAYered CAvern Surface Tracker (LAYCAST), to be installed on the ceiling and the wall of the cavern hosting the main experiment of future electron-positron colliders such as CEPC and FCC-ee. With detailed and realistic considerations of the design of such a new experiment, the proposed detector is dedicated to extending the sensitivity reach of the main detector to v… ▽ More We propose a detector concept, LAYered CAvern Surface Tracker (LAYCAST), to be installed on the ceiling and the wall of the cavern hosting the main experiment of future electron-positron colliders such as CEPC and FCC-ee. With detailed and realistic considerations of the design of such a new experiment, the proposed detector is dedicated to extending the sensitivity reach of the main detector to various theoretical scenarios of long-lived particles (LLPs). We study carefully four such scenarios involving a light scalar boson $X$, the heavy neutral lepton $N$, the lightest neutralino $\tildeχ^0_1$ in the R-parity-violating supersymmetry, and the axion-like particle $a$. Long-lived light scalar bosons are considered to be produced from the Standard-Model (SM) Higgs boson's decay ($h \to X X$) at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 240 GeV, while the other three types of LLPs are produced either from $Z$-boson decays (viz. $Z \to ν\, N, ~\tildeχ^0_1\, \tildeχ^0_1 $) or direct scattering process ($ e^- e^+ \to ~γ\, a$) at $\sqrt{s} =$ 91.2 GeV, where $γ$ and $ν$ denote the SM photon and neutrino, respectively. With Monte-Carlo simulations, we derive the sensitivities of the proposed experiment to these LLPs and the corresponding signal-event numbers. Our findings show that LAYCAST can probe large new parameter space beyond both current bounds and the expected reach of the main experiments at CEPC and FCC-ee. Abstract: Based on $(2712.4\pm 14.3)\times10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events, we investigate four hadronic decay modes of the $P$-wave charmonium spin-singlet state $h_c(^1P_1) \to h^+ h^- π^0/η$ ($h=π$ or $K$) via the process $ψ(3686) \to π^{0}h_c$ at BESIII. The $h_c \to π^+ π^- π^0$ decay is observed with a significance of 9.6$σ$ after taking into account systematic uncertainties. The hadronic transition form factors $D^+_s\to ηe^+ν_e$, $D^+_s\to η^\prime e^+ν_e$, and $D^+_s\to K^0 e^+ν_e$ at four-momentum transfer squared $q^2$ = 0 are determined to be $f^η_+(0) = 0.482 \pm 0.011_{\rm stat} \pm 0.009_{\rm syst}\pm0.004_{\rm input},$ $f^{η^{\prime}}_+(0) = 0.562 \pm 0.031_{\rm stat} \pm 0.014_{\rm syst}\pm0.003_{\rm input},$ and $f^{K^0}_+(0) = 0.624 \pm 0.052_{\rm stat} \pm 0.013_{\rm syst}\pm0.002_{\rm input}.$ △ Less

With over 3.6 million signal candidates, an optimized candidate selection, improved treatment of backgrounds and efficiencies, refined energy calibration, and an energy response model for the capture-on-hydrogen sensitive… ▽ More This Letter reports the first measurement of the oscillation amplitude and frequency of reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay via neutron capture on hydrogen using 1958 days of data. With over 3.6 million signal candidates, an optimized candidate selection, improved treatment of backgrounds and efficiencies, refined energy calibration, and an energy response model for the capture-on-hydrogen sensitive region, the relative $\overlineν_{e}$ rates and energy spectra variation among the near and far detectors gives $\mathrm{sin}^22θ_{13} = 0.0759_{-0.0049}^{+0.0050}$ and $Δm^2_{32} = (2.72^{+0.14}_{-0.15})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ assuming the normal neutrino mass ordering, and $Δm^2_{32} = (-2.83^{+0.15}_{-0.14})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ for the inverted neutrino mass ordering. This estimate of $\sin^2 2θ_{13}$ is consistent with and essentially independent from the one obtained using the capture-on-gadolinium sample at Daya Bay. The combination of these two results yields $\mathrm{sin}^22θ_{13}= 0.0833\pm0.0022$, which represents an 8% relative improvement in precision regarding the Daya Bay full 3158-day capture-on-gadolinium result. △ Less

Abstract: We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 ν$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 ν$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\barν_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $τ/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $τ/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$. △ Less

Abstract: Using $(27.12\pm 0.14)\times10^{8}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present the first observation of the decays $χ_{cJ}\toΛ\barΛω$, where $J=0, 1, 2$, with statistical significances of $11.7 σ, 11.2 σ$, and $11.8 σ$. The branching fractions of $h_c\rightarrowγη^\prime$ and $h_c\rightarrowγη$ are measured to be $(1.40\pm0.11\pm0.04\pm0.10)\times10^{-3}$ and $(3.77\pm0.55\pm0.13\pm0.26)\times10^{-4}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic, and the third from the branching fraction of $ψ(3686)\rightarrowπ^{0}h_c$. The ratio $R_{h_c}=\frac{\mathscr{B}(h_c\rightarrowγη)}{\mathscr{B}(h_c\rightarrowγη^\prime)}$ is calculated to be $(27.0\pm4.4\pm1.0)\%$. The measurements are consistent with the previous results with improved precision by a factor of 2. The results are valuable for gaining a deeper understanding of $η-η^\prime$ mixing, and its manifestation within quantum chromodynamics. No significant signal is found for the decay $h_c\rightarrowγπ^{0}$, and an upper limit is placed on its branching fraction of $\mathscr{B}(h_c\rightarrowγπ^{0})<5.0\times10^{-5}$, at the 90\% confidence level. △ Less

Abstract: We report the results of the first search for Standard Model and baryon-number-violating two-body decays of the neutral $B$ mesons to $Λ^{0}$ and $Ω^{(*)0}_c$ using 711~${\rm fb^{-1}}$ of data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Shedding Light on Hadronization by Quarkonium Energy Correlator

The observable eliminates the need for jets while sustaining the perturbative predictive power. The selection of $e^{-}e^{+}\toτ^+τ^-$ events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. With the $e^+e^-\toωX(3872)$ process, the branching fraction ratio $R\equiv\frac{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toγJ/ψ)}{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\toπ^+π^- J/ψ)}$ is measured to be $0.38\pm0.20_\text{stat.}\pm0.01_\text{syst.}$ ($R< 0.83$ at 90\% confidence level). In addition, we measure the ratio of the average cross section of $e^+e^-\toωX(3872)$ to $e^+e^-\toωχ_{c1}(ωχ_{c2})$ to be $σ_{ωX(3872)}/σ_{ωχ_{c1}}~(σ_{ωX(3872)}/σ_{ωχ_{c2}})=5.2\pm1.0_\text{stat.}\pm1.9_\text{syst.}~ (5.5\pm1.1_\text{stat.}\pm2.4_\text{syst.})$. Finally, we search for the process of $e^+e^-\toγX(3872)$, and no obvious signal is observed. The upper limit on the ratio of the average cross section of $e^+e^-\toγX(3872)$ to $e^+e^-\toωX(3872)$ is set as $σ_{γX(3872)}/σ_{ωX(3872)}<0.23$ at 90\% confidence level. △ Less

Abstract: We report the first amplitude analysis of the decays $D^{0} \to π^{+} π^{-} η$ and $D^{+} \rightarrow π^{+}π^{0}η$ using a data sample taken with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.9 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$. The ratios $\mathcal{B}(D^{0} \rightarrow a_{0}(980)^{+}π^{-})/\mathcal{B}(D^{0} \rightarrow a_{0}(980)^{-}π^{+})$ and $\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \rightarrow a_{0}(980)^{+}π^{0})/\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \rightarrow a_{0}(980)^{0}π^{+})$ are measured to be $7.5^{+2.5}_{-0.8\,\mathrm{stat.}}\pm1.7_{\mathrm{syst.}}$ and $2.6\pm0.6_{\mathrm{stat.}}\pm0.3_{\mathrm{syst.}}$, respectively. The measured $D^{0}$ ratio disagrees with the theoretical predictions by orders of magnitudes, thus implying a substantial contribution from final-state interactions. △ Less
