The azimuthal correlation angle, $Δφ$, between the scattered lepton and the leading jet in deep inelastic $e^{\pm}p$ scattering at HERA has been studied using data collected with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 318 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $326 \;\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. A measurement of jet cross sections in the laboratory frame was made in a fiducial region corresponding to photon virtuality $10 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2 < Q^2 < 350 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2$, inelasticity $0.04 < y < 0.7$, outgoing lepton energy $E_e > 10 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, lepton polar angle $140^\circ < θ_e < 180^\circ$, jet transverse momentum $2.5 \;\mathrm{GeV} < p_\mathrm{T,jet} < 30 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, and jet pseudorapidity $-1.5 < η_\mathrm{jet} < 1.8$. Jets were reconstructed using the $k_\mathrm{T}$ algorithm with the radius parameter $R = 1$. The leading jet in an event is defined as the jet that carries the highest $p_\mathrm{T,jet}$. Differential cross sections, $dσ/dΔφ$, were measured as a function of the azimuthal correlation angle in various ranges of leading-jet transverse momentum, photon virtuality and jet multiplicity. Perturbative calculations at $\mathcal{O}(α_{s}^2)$ accuracy successfully describe the data within the fiducial region, although a lower level of agreement is observed near $Δφ\rightarrow π$ for events with high jet multiplicity, due to limitations of the perturbative approach in describing soft phenomena in QCD. The data are equally well described by Monte Carlo predictions that supplement leading-order matrix elements with parton showering.

We present theoretical predictions for observables in inclusive $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ suitable for measurements at hadron colliders through a sum-over-exclusive approach. At low $q^2$ we calculate the branching ratio and three angular observables. At high $q^2$ we provide the branching ratio and the ratio of the $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ rate with respect to the inclusive $\bar B \to X_u \ell \barν$ rate with the same phase-space cut. We compare our predictions to an extraction of the experimental rate through a sum-over-exclusive method using branching ratios of the exclusive $\bar B \to K^{(*)}μ^+μ^-$ modes measured at LHCb. Our analysis does not support a recent claim about a deficit in the inclusive branching ratio in the high-$q^2$ region. Finally, we present current model-independent bounds on new physics and emphasize the potential of complementary analyses of $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ at Belle II and the LHC.

2$b$ or not 2$b$: on the rejection of $g\to b\bar b$ jets

Abstract:
Motivated by new physics models which lead to final states containing a high multiplicity of bottom and top quarks, we develop a tagging strategy to suppress reducible and non-reducible multi-jet backgrounds. The idea takes advantage of the properties of light parton showers and of the gluon fragmentation into heavy quarks to reject jets that do not originate from a bottom quark.

A new measurement of inclusive-jet cross sections in the Breit frame in neutral current deep inelastic scattering using the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider is presented. The data were taken in the years 2004 to 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of $318\,\text{GeV}$ and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $347\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Massless jets, reconstructed using the $k_t$-algorithm in the Breit reference frame, have been measured as a function of the squared momentum transfer, $Q^2$, and the transverse momentum of the jets in the Breit frame, $p_{\perp,\text{Breit}}$. The measured jet cross sections are compared to previous measurements and to perturbative QCD predictions. The measurement has been used in a next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD analysis to perform a simultaneous determination of parton distribution functions of the proton and the strong coupling, resulting in a value of $α_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1142 \pm 0.0017~\text{(experimental/fit)}$ ${}^{+0.0006}_{-0.0007}~\text{(model/parameterisation)}$ ${}^{+0.0006}_{-0.0004}~\text{(scale)}$, whose accuracy is improved compared to similar measurements. In addition, the running of the strong coupling is demonstrated using data obtained at different scales.

Lorentz and CPT symmetry in the quark sector of the Standard Model are studied in the context of an effective field theory using ZEUS $e^{\pm} p$ data. Symmetry-violating effects can lead to time-dependent oscillations of otherwise time-independent observables, including scattering cross sections. An analysis using five years of inclusive neutral-current deep inelastic scattering events corresponding to an integrated HERA luminosity of $372\; \text{pb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 318$ Gev has been performed. No evidence for oscillations in sidereal time has been observed within statistical and systematic uncertainties. Constraints, most for the first time, are placed on 42 coefficients parameterising dominant CPT-even dimension-four and CPT-odd dimension-five spin-independent modifications to the propagation and interaction of light quarks.

We demonstrate the potential of fully leptonic cascade decays of a heavy neutral Higgs boson through vectorlike leptons as a simultaneous probe for extended Higgs sectors and extra matter particles at the LHC. The processes we explore are unique in that their event topologies lead to di-boson-like leptonic final states with a lepton pair which does not reconstruct the mass of a gauge boson. By recasting existing $2\ell + E_T^{\rm miss}$ and $3/4\ell$ searches channels using run2 data from the LHC we obtain $\textit{model independent}$ bounds on the masses of heavy scalars and vectorlike leptons and use these results to explore future prospects at the HL-LHC. Our results can be directly applied to any kind of new physics scenarios sharing the final states and the event topology. For concreteness, we apply our results to a benchmark scenario: a two Higgs doublet model type-II augmented with vectorlike leptons. Remarkably, even with current data the sensitivity of our analysis shows a reach for masses of a heavy neutral Higgs and vectorlike leptons up to 2 TeV and 1.5 TeV, respectively. Even for low $\tanβ\gtrsim 1,$ the analysis retains sensitivity to heavy Higgs masses slightly above 1 TeV. The future sensitivities at the HL-LHC extend the reach for heavy Higgses and new leptons to 2.7 TeV and 2 TeV, respectively.

We design search strategies for these final states and discuss the mass ranges of heavy Higgs bosons and new quarks that can be explored at the Large Hadron Collider as functions of branching ratios in a model independent way. We further combine the results with a similar study focusing on decays which lead to a $6b$ final state and interpret the sensitivity to charged and neutral Higgs bosons and vectorlike quarks in the type-II two Higgs doublet model. We find that the LHC reach for their masses extends to well above 2 TeV in the case of an SU(2) doublet quark and to at least 1.8 TeV for a bottom-like SU(2) singlet quark in the whole range of $\tanβ$ between 1 and 50.

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and develo** detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions.
This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter

Two of the elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix, $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, are extracted from semileptonic B decays. The results of the B factories, analysed in the light of the most recent theoretical calculations, remain puzzling, because for both $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$ the exclusive and inclusive determinations are in clear tension. Further, measurements in the $τ$ channels at Belle, Babar, and LHCb show discrepancies with the Standard Model predictions, pointing to a possible violation of lepton flavor universality. LHCb and Belle II have the potential to resolve these issues in the next few years. This article summarizes the discussions and results obtained at the MITP workshop held on April 9--13, 2018, in Mainz, Germany, with the goal to develop a medium-term strategy of analyses and calculations aimed at solving the puzzles. Lattice and continuum theorists working together with experimentalists have discussed how to reshape the semileptonic analyses in view of the much higher luminosity expected at Belle II, searching for ways to systematically validate the theoretical predictions in both exclusive and inclusive B decays, and to exploit the rich possibilities at LHCb.

Rare inclusive $B$ decays such as $\bar{B}\to X_{s(d)} \ell^+\ell^-$ are interesting probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. Due to the complementarity to their exclusive counterparts, they might shed light on the anomalies currently seen in exclusive $b \to s$ transitions. Distinguishing new-physics effects from the Standard Model requires precise predictions and necessitates the control of long distance effects. In the present work we revisit and improve the description of various long distance effects in inclusive decays such as charmonium and light-quark resonances, nonfactorisable power corrections, and cascade decays. We then apply these results to a state-of-the-art phenomenological study of $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$, including also logarithmically enhanced QED corrections and the recently calculated five-body contributions. To fully exploit the new-physics potential of inclusive flavour-changing neutral current decays, the $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$ observables should be measured in a dedicated Belle II analysis.

We study cascade decays of heavy neutral Higgs bosons through vectorlike quarks. We focus on scenarios where decay modes into pairs of vectorlike quarks are not kinematically open which extends the sensitivity of the LHC to larger masses. Assuming only mixing with the third family of standard model quarks the new decay modes of heavy Higgs bosons are: $H\to t_4 t \to Wbt, Zt t, ht t$ and $H\to b_4 b \to Wtb, Zb b, hb b$, where $t_4$ ($b_4$) is the new up-type (down-type) quark mass eigenstate. In the numerical analysis we assume the CP even Higgs boson in the two Higgs doublet model type-II but the signatures are relevant for many other scenarios. We identify the region of the parameter space where these decay modes are significant or can even dominate, and thus they provide the best opportunities for the simultaneous discovery of a new Higgs boson and vectorlike quarks. We further explore the reach of the High Luminosity LHC for two representative decay modes, $t_4\to Zt\to\ell\ell t$ and $b_4\to Zb\to\ell\ell b$, and found that cross sections at a 0.1 fb level can be probed with simple cut based analyses. We also find that the rates for Higgs cascade decays can be much larger than the rates for a single production of vectorlike quarks. Furthermore, the reach for vectorlike quarks in Higgs cascade decays and pair production extends to comparable masses.

This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as $3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of $14~\mathrm{TeV}$, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as $15~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data at a centre-of-mass energy of $27~\mathrm{TeV}$. We consider a large variety of new physics models, both in a simplified model fashion and in a more model-dependent one. A long list of contributions from the theory and experimental (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) communities have been collected and merged together to give a complete, wide, and consistent view of future prospects for BSM physics at the considered colliders. On top of the usual standard candles, such as supersymmetric simplified models and resonances, considered for the evaluation of future collider potentials, this report contains results on dark matter and dark sectors, long lived particles, leptoquarks, sterile neutrinos, axion-like particles, heavy scalars, vector-like quarks, and more. Particular attention is placed, especially in the study of the HL-LHC prospects, to the detector upgrades, the assessment of the future systematic uncertainties, and new experimental techniques. The general conclusion is that the HL-LHC, on top of allowing to extend the present LHC mass and coupling reach by $20-50\%$ on most new physics scenarios, will also be able to constrain, and potentially discover, new physics that is presently unconstrained. Moreover, compared to the HL-LHC, the reach in most observables will generally more than double at the HE-LHC, which may represent a good candidate future facility for a final test of TeV-scale new physics.

Motivated by the success of the flavour physics programme carried out over the last decade at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we characterize in detail the physics potential of its High-Luminosity and High-Energy upgrades in this domain of physics. We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We discuss the complementarity of their discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model, affirming the necessity to fully exploit the LHC's flavour physics potential throughout its upgrade eras.

Simulated differential cross-section data are used to place expected bounds on a class of quark-sector coefficients for Lorentz violation that induce sidereal time dependence in the scattering cross section. We find that, with $100 \; {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, the expected bounds are in the $10^{-5}-10^{-7}$ range and are roughly two orders of magnitude stronger than those that can be extracted from existing HERA data. We also discuss the possibility of extracting bounds on the remaining time-independent coefficients.

Among the decay modes of the standard model like Higgs boson, $h$, we consider $b \bar b$ and $γγ$ as representative channels with sizable and negligible background, respectively. We obtained new model independent limits on production cross section for this process from recasting existing experimental searches and interpret them within the two Higgs doublet model. In addition, we show that these limits can be improved by about two orders of magnitude with appropriate selection cuts immediately with existing data sets. We also discuss expected sensitivities with integrated luminosity up to 3 ab$^{-1}$ and present a brief overview of other channels.

We study the exclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays $B\to K(π)\ell^+\ell^-$, $B\to K(π)ν\barν$, and $B\toπτν$, computing observables in the Standard model using the recent lattice-QCD results for the underlying form factors from the Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations. These processes provide theoretically clean windows into physics beyond the Standard Model because the hadronic uncertainties are now under good control for suitably binned observables. For example, the resulting partially integrated branching fractions for $B\toπμ^+μ^-$ and $B\to Kμ^+μ^-$ outside the charmonium resonance region are 1-2$σ$ higher than the LHCb Collaboration's recent measurements, where the theoretical and experimental errors are commensurate. The combined tension is 1.7$σ$. Combining the Standard-Model rates with LHCb's measurements yields values for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{td}|=7.45{(69)}\times10^{-3}$, $|V_{ts}|=35.7(1.5)\times10^{-3}$, and $|V_{td}/V_{ts}|=0.201{(20)}$, which are compatible with the values obtained from neutral $B_{(s)}$-meson oscillations and have competitive uncertainties. Alternatively, taking the CKM matrix elements from unitarity, we constrain new-physics contributions at the electroweak scale. The constraints on the Wilson coefficients ${\rm Re}(C_9)$ and ${\rm Re}(C_{10})$ from $B\toπμ^+μ^-$ and $B\to Kμ^+μ^-$ are competitive with those from $B\to K^* μ^+μ^-$, and display a 2.0$σ$ tension with the Standard Model. Our predictions for $B\to K(π)ν\barν$ and $B\toπτν$ are close to the current experimental limits.

We focus on $pp \to H \to ν_4 ν_μ\to W μν_μ$, where $ν_4$ is a new neutral lepton, and study possible effects of this process on the measurements of $pp \to WW$ and $H \to WW$ since it leads to the same final states. We discuss predictions for contributions to $pp \to WW$ and $H \to WW$ and their correlations from the region of the parameter space that satisfies all available constraints including precision electroweak observables and from pair production of vectorlike leptons. Large contributions, close to current limits, favor small $\tan β$ region of the parameter space. We find that, as a result of adopted cuts in experimental analyses, the contribution to $pp \to WW$ can be an order of magnitude larger than the contribution to $H \to WW$. Thus, future precise measurements of $pp\to WW$ will further constrain the parameters of the model. In addition, we also consider possible contributions to $pp\to WW$ from the heavy Higgs decays into a new charged lepton $e_4$ ($H\to e_4 μ\to W μν_μ$), exotic SM Higgs decays, and pair production of vectorlike leptons.

Thus, in conjunction with experiments, the construction of a unitarity triangle purely from Kaon physics should soon become feasible. Along with the B-unitarity triangle, this should allow for more stringent tests of the Standard Model and tighter constraints on new physics.

We present analytical results, which are supplemented by a dedicated Monte Carlo study on the treatment of collinear photons in order to determine the size of the electromagnetic logarithms. We then give the Standard Model predictions of all observables, considering all available NNLO QCD, NLO QED and power corrections, and investigate their sensitivity to New Physics. Since the structure of the double differential decay rate is modified in the presence of QED corrections, we also propose new observables which vanish if only QCD corrections are taken into account. Moreover, we study the experimental sensitivity to these new observables at Belle II.

We consider extensions of the Standard Model by vectorlike leptons and set limits on a new charged lepton, $e_4^\pm$, using the ATLAS search for anomalous production of multi-lepton events. It is assumed that only one Standard Model lepton, namely the muon, dominantly mixes with vectorlike leptons resulting in possible decays $e_4^\pm \to W^\pm ν_μ$, $e_4^\pm \to Zμ^\pm$, and $e_4^\pm \to h μ^\pm$. We derive generally applicable limits on the new lepton treating the branching ratios for these processes as free variables. We further interpret the general limits in two scenarios with $e_4^\pm$ originating predominantly from either the $SU(2)$ doublet or the $SU(2)$ singlet. The doublet case is more constrained as a result of larger production cross-section and extra production processes $e_4^\pm ν_4$ and $ν_4ν_4$ in addition to $e_4^+ e_4^-$, where $ν_4$ is a new neutral state accompanying $e_4$. We find that some combinations of branching ratios are poorly constrained, whereas some are constrained up to masses of more than 500 GeV. In the doublet case, assuming BR$(ν_4\rightarrow Wμ) = 1$, all masses below about 300 GeV are ruled out. Even if this condition is relaxed and additional decay modes, $ν_4 \to Z ν_μ$ and $ν_4 \to h ν_μ$, are allowed, below the Higgs threshold still almost all of the parameter space (of independent branching ratios) is ruled out. Nevertheless, even assuming the maximal production cross-section, which coincides with the doublet case, the new charged lepton can still be as light as the LEP-II limit allows. We discuss several possible improvements of current experimental analyses that would dramatically reduce the allowed parameter space, even with current data.

Current searches for the charged Higgs at the LHC focus only on the $τν$, $cs$, and $tb$ final states. Instead, we consider the process $pp\to Φ\to W^\pm H^\mp \to W^+ W^- A$ where $Φ$ is a heavy neutral Higgs boson, $H^\pm$ is a charged Higgs boson, and $A$ is a light Higgs boson, with mass either below or above the $b\bar{b}$ threshold. The cross-section for this process is typically large when kinematically open since $H^\pm \to W^\pm A$ can be the dominant decay mode of the charged Higgs. The final state we consider has two leptons and missing energy from the doubly leptonic decay of the $W^+ W^-$ and possibly additional jets; it is therefore constrained by existing SM Higgs searches in the $W^+ W^-$ channel. We extract these constraints on the cross-section for this process as a function of the masses of the particles involved. We also apply our results specifically to a type-II two Higgs doublet model with an extra Standard-Model-singlet and obtain new and powerful constraints on $m_{H^\pm}$ and $\tanβ$. We point out that a slightly modified version of this search, with more dedicated cuts, could be used to possibly discover the charged Higgs, either with existing data or in the future.

In singlet extensions of the two Higgs doublet model, a light CP-odd Higgs boson (A) can significantly modify decay modes of the charged Higgs, without necessarily affecting decay modes of the standard model-like Higgs boson. These effects can be sizable even if the doublet component of the light CP-odd Higgs is small, so that constraints from Upsilon decays and direct CP-odd Higgs production do not apply. We study a scenario in which the charged Higgs is produced in top quark decays, t -> H+ b, with dominant H+ -> W A. We focus on the CP-odd Higgs mass range below the bb threshold. We summarize all current experimental constraints and find that, as a result of H+ -> W A dominance, this scenario is not constrained in a large region of tan(beta), mH+, and CP-odd Higgs doublet component. We discuss search strategies based on A -> tau tau, with both taus decaying leptonically, and on the subleading decay mode A -> mu mu. We show that a search for t -> H+ b, H+ -> W A, A -> mu mu in 20 fb^-1 of 8 TeV LHC data can constrain most of the currently allowed parameter space. Existing trilepton searches are not sensitive to this signal due to the adopted isolation criteria.

We discuss the present status of global fits to the CKM unitary triangle using the latest experimental and theoretical constraints. For the required nonperturbative weak matrix elements, we use three-flavor lattice QCD averages from www.latticeaverages.org; these have been updated from Ref. [1] to reflect all available lattice calculations as of the "End of 2011". Because of the greater than 3 sigma disagreement between the extraction of |Vub| from inclusive and exclusive semileptonic b -> u l nu (l = e,mu) decays, particular emphasis is given to a clean fit in which we remove the information from these decays. Given current theoretical and experimental inputs, we observe an approximately 3 sigma tension in the CKM unitarity triangle that may indicate the presence of new physics in the quark-flavor sector. Using a model-independent parameterization of new-physics effects, we test the compatibility of the data with scenarios in which the new physics is in kaon mixing, in B-mixing, or in B -> tau nu decay. We find that scenarios with new physics in B -> tau nu decay or in B-mixing are approximately equally preferred. Finally, we interpret these results in terms contributions to Delta S = 2 and Delta B = 2 four-fermion operators. We find that the preferred scale of new physics (with Standard-Model like couplings) is in the few hundred GeV range.

Specifically the SM predicted value of sin(2 beta) seems too high compared to direct experimental measured value by over 3 sigma. Furthermore, our studiy shows that new physics predominantly effects B-mixings and B_d -> psi K_s, and not primarily in kaon-mixing or in B -> tau nu. Model independent operator analysis suggests the scale of underlying new physics, accompanied by a BSM CP-odd phase, responsible for breaking of the SM is less than a few TeV, possibly as low as a few hundred GeV. Two possible BSM scenarios, namely warped extra-dimensions and SM with a 4th generation, are briefly discussed. Generic predictions of warped flavor models are briefly discussed. While SM with 4th generation (SM4) is a very simple way to account for the observed anomalies, SM4 is also well motivated due to its potential role in dynamical electrweak symmetery breaking via condensation of heavy quarks and in barygenesis.

We perform a global fit to the CKM unitarity triangle using the latest experimental and theoretical constraints. We present results for three different sets of constraints: the standard inputs used by CKMfitter and UTFit, the standard inputs minus |Vub|, and the standard inputs minus both |Vub| and |Vcb|. For the required nonperturbative weak matrix elements, we use three-flavor lattice QCD averages from www.latticeaverages.org; these have been updated to reflect all available lattice calculations as of the "End of 2010". Given current theoretical and experimental inputs, we observe an approximately 3σ tension in the CKM unitarity triangle that can be interpreted as sign of physics beyond the standard model in the flavor sector. Using a model-independent parameterization of new physics effects, we test the compatibility of new physics in kaon mixing, in B-mixing, or in B \rightarrow τ ν decay with the current data. Although the tension could be accommodated with each hypothesis, the scenarios with new physics in B-mixing or, to a lesser extent, in B \rightarrow τ ν decay are strongly preferred. Finally, we interpret these results in terms contributions to ΔS = 2 and ΔB = 2 four-fermion operators. We find that the preferred scale of new physics (with Standard Model like couplings) is in the few hundred GeV range.

However, through a critical study we show that most likely the dominant source of these deviations is in B_d(s) mixings and in sin(2 beta) and less so in B -> tau nu, and also that the bulk of the problem persists even if input from epsilon_K is not used. The fact that kaon mixing and epsilon_K are not the dominant source of the deviation from the Standard Model has the very important consequence that model independent considerations imply that the scale of the relevant new CP-violating physics is below O(2 TeV), thus suggesting that direct signals of the new particle(s) may well be accessible in collider experiments at the LHC and perhaps even at the Tevatron.

We study the decay B -> K* l+ l- in the QCD factorization approach and propose a new integrated observable whose dependence on the form factors is almost negligible, consequently the non--perturbative error is significantly reduced and indeed its overall theoretical error is dominated by perturbative scale uncertainties. The new observable we propose is the ratio between the integrated forward--backward asymmetry in the [4,6] GeV^2 and [1,4] GeV^2 dilepton invariant mass bins. This new observable is particularly interesting because, when compared to the location of the zero of the FBA spectrum, it is experimentally easier to measure and its theoretical uncertainties are almost as small; moreover it displays a very strong dependence on the phase of the Wilson coefficient C_10 that is otherwise only accessible through complicated CP violating asymmetries. We illustrate the new physics sensitivity of this observable within the context of few extensions of the Standard Model, namely the SM with four generations, an MSSM with non--vanishing source of flavor changing neutral currents in the down squark sector and a Z' model with tree level flavor changing couplings.

In particular the |Vcb| + epsilon_K constraint, which depends extremely sensitively on Vcb in the traditional method, is replaced by the interplay between epsilon_K, BR(B ->tau nu) and Delta M_Bs. It is found that even in this method tensions with the Standard Model persist at the ~1.8 sigma level. Furthermore, improvements on the B -> tau nu branching ratio and on the lattice determination of f_Bs Bs^(1/2) can increase the effectiveness of this method significantly.

This deviates from direct experimental measurements via the tree process, b -> c c s as well as the one via the penguin-loop b -> s decays by around 2.1 and 2.7 sigma respectively. If these deviations are confirmed they would imply the presence of new physics rather pervasively in both B_d mixing (i.e. very likely in b -> d) as well as in b -> s transitions requiring a beyond the SM CP-odd phase. Consequently, improvements in the relevant lattice calculations should be given a high priority.

We study logarithmically enhanced electromagnetic corrections to the decay rate in the high dilepton invariant mass region as well as corrections to the forward backward asymmetry (FBA) of the inclusive rare decay $\bar{B} \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$. As expected, the relative effect of these corrections in the high dilepton mass region is around -8% for the muonic final state and therefore much larger than in the low dilepton mass region.
We also present a complete phenomenological analysis, to improved NNLO accuracy, of the dilepton mass spectrum and the FBA integrated in the low dilepton mass region, including a new approach to the zero of the FBA. The latter represents one of the most precise predictions in flavour physics with a theoretical uncertainty of order 5%. We find $(q_0^2)_{μμ} = (3.50 \pm 0.12) \gev^2$. For the high dilepton invariant mass region, we have ${\cal B}(\bar B\to X_sμμ)_{\rm high} = (2.40^{+0.69}_{-0.62}) \times 10^{-7}$. The dominant uncertainty is due to the $1/m_b$ corrections and can be significantly reduced in the future. For the low dilepton invariant mass region, we confirm previous results up to small corrections.

We analyse a minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) taking a minimal flavour violation (MFV) structure at the GUT scale. We evaluate the parameters at the electroweak scale taking into account the full flavour structure in the evolution of the renormalization group equations. We concentrate mainly on the decay Bs -> mu mu and its correlations with other observables like b -> s gamma, b -> s l l, Delta M_Bs and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We restrict our analysis to the regions in parameter space consistent with the dark matter constraints. We find that the BR(Bs -> mu mu) can exceed the current experimental limit in the regions of parameter space which are allowed by all other constraints thus providing an additional bound on supersymmetric parameters. This holds even in the constrained MSSM. Assuming an hypothetical measurement of BR(Bs -> mu mu) ~ 10^-7 we analyse the predicted MSSM spectrum and flavour violating decay modes of supersymmetric particles which are found to be small.

We study the implication of the recent measurement by the BELLE collaboration of the averaged branching fraction $\bar B_{exp} [B \to (ρ, ω) γ] = (1.8^{+0.6}_{-0.5} \pm 0.1) \times 10^{-6}$ for the CKM phenomenology. Combined with the averaged branching fraction $\bar B_{exp} (B \to K^* γ) = (4.06 \pm 0.26) \times 10^{-5}$ measured earlier, this yields $\bar R_{exp} [(ρ, ω) γ/K^* γ] = (4.2 \pm 1.3)%$ for the ratio of the two branching fractions. Updating earlier theoretical analysis of these decays based on the QCD factorization framework, and constraining the CKM-Wolfenstein parameters from the unitarity fits, our results yield $\bar B_{th} [B \to (ρ, ω) γ] = (1.38 \pm 0.42) \times 10^{-6}$ and $\bar R_{th} [(ρ, ω) γ/K^* γ] = (3.3 \pm 1.0)%$, in agreement with the BELLE data. Leaving instead the CKM-Wolfenstein parameters free, our analysis gives (at 68% C.L.) $0.16\leq |V_{td}/V_{ts}| \leq 0.29$, which is in agreement with but less precise than the indirect CKM-unitarity fit of the same, $0.18 \leq |V_{td}/V_{ts}| \leq 0.22$. The isospin-violating ratio in the $B \to ργ$ decays and the SU(3)-violating ratio in the $B_d^0 \to (ρ^0, ω) γ$ decays are presented together with estimates of the direct and mixing-induced CP-asymmetries in the $B \to (ρ,ω) γ$ decays within the SM. Their measurements will overconstrain the angle $α$ of the CKM-unitarity triangle.

Measurements of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in the decay $B^0_d (t) \to π^+ π^-$ and its charge conjugate by the BELLE and BABAR collaborations currently yield $C_{ππ}^{+-} = -0.46 \pm 0.13$ and $S_{ππ}^{+-} = -0.74 \pm 0.16$, characterizing the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries, respectively. We study the implication of these measurements on the CKM phenomenology taking into account the available information in the quark mixing sector. Our analysis leads to the results that the ratio $|P_c/T_c|$ involving the QCD-penguin and tree amplitudes and the related strong phase difference $δ_c = δ_c^P - δ_c^T$ in the $B^0_d/\bar{B}_d^0 \to π^+ π^-$ decays are quite substantial. Using the isospin symmetry to constrain $|P_c/T_c|$ and $\cos (2θ)$, where $2 θ$ parameterizes the penguin-induced contribution, we present a fit of the current data including the measurements of $S_{ππ}^{+-}$ and $C_{ππ}^{+-}$. Our best-fits yield: $α= 92^\circ$, $β= 24^\circ$, $γ= 64^\circ$, $|P_c/T_c| = 0.77$, and $δ_c = -43^\circ$. At 68% C.L., the ranges are: $81^\circ \leq α\leq 103^\circ$, $21.9^\circ \leq β\leq 25.5^\circ$, $54^\circ \leq γ\leq 75^\circ$, $0.43 \leq |P_c/T_c| \leq 1.35$ and $-64^\circ \leq δ_c \leq -29^\circ$. Currently {\it en vogue} dynamical approaches to estimate the hadronic matrix elements in $B \to ππ$ decays do not provide a good fit of the current data.

The direct CP asymmetry in the untagged inclusive channel B -> X_(s+d) gamma provides a strict test of the standard model. It has been shown beyond the partonic level that this asymmetry is negligibly small thanks to U-spin relations and to the unitarity of the CKM matrix. In the present paper we investigate this relation beyond the SM; in particular, we analyse to which extent deviations from this prediction are possible in supersymmetric scenarios. We analyse the minimal flavour violation scenario, including tan(beta) enhanced terms and using the complete two-loop renormalization group running. Our analysis fully takes into account also the EDM constraints on the supersymmetric phases. We investigate possible correlations between the tagged and the untagged CP asymmetries and the indirect sensitivity of the latter to the B -> X_d gamma CP asymmetry.
Furthermore, we derive general model-independent formulae for the branching ratios and CP asymmetries for the inclusive B -> X_d gamma and B -> X_s gamma modes, and update the corresponding SM predictions.

This framework is used in conjunction with the current measurements of the branching ratios for $B\to X_s \g$ and $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays and upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays $B\to (K^*,X_s) \ell^+ \ell^-$ to work out bounds on the Wilson coefficients $C_7$, $C_8$, $C_9$ and $C_{10}$ appearing in the effective Hamiltonian formalism. The resulting bounds are found to be consistent with the predictions of the standard model and some variants of supersymmetric theories. We illustrate the constraints on supersymmetric parameters that the current data on rare B decays implies in the context of minimal flavor violating model and in more general scenarios admitting additional flavor changing mechanisms. Precise measurements of the dilepton invariant mass distributions in the decays $B \to (X_s,K^*,K) \ell^+ \ell^-$, in particular in the lower dilepton mass region, and the forward-backward asymmetry in the decays $B \to (X_s,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-$, will greatly help in discriminating among the SM and various supersymmetric theories.
