Observation of the Electromagnetic Dalitz Transition $h_c \rightarrow e^+e^-η_c$

Abstract: Using $(27.12\pm 0.14)\times10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ decays and data samples of $e^+e^-$ collisions with $\sqrt{s}$ from 4.130 to 4.780~GeV collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of the electromagnetic Dalitz transition $h_c\to e^+e^-η_c$ with a statistical significance of $5.4σ$. Observation of $\mathcal R(3810)$ in $e^+e^-\rightarrow {\rm hadrons}$ and Improved Measurements of the Resonance Parameters of $\mathcal R(3760)$ and $\mathcal R(3780)$

Abstract: We report the measurement of the cross sections for $e^+e^-\rightarrow {\rm hadrons}$ at center-of-mass (c.m.) energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We observe a new resonance $\mathcal R(3810)$ in the cross sections for the first time, and observe the $\mathcal R(3760)$ resonance with high significance in the cross sections. The $\mathcal R(3810)$ has a mass of $(3804.5 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.9)$ ~MeV/$c^2$,… ▽ More We report the measurement of the cross sections for $e^+e^-\rightarrow {\rm hadrons}$ at center-of-mass (c.m.) energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We observe a new resonance $\mathcal R(3810)$ in the cross sections for the first time, and observe the $\mathcal R(3760)$ resonance with high significance in the cross sections. The $\mathcal R(3810)$ has a mass of $(3804.5 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.9)$ ~MeV/$c^2$, a total width of $(5.4 \pm 3.5 \pm 3.2)$~MeV, and an electronic partial width of $(19.4 \pm 7.4 \pm 12.1)$~eV. Its significance is $7.7σ$. The $\mathcal R(3810)$ could be interpreted as a hadro-charmonium resonance predicted by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). In addition, we measure the mass $(3751.9\pm 3.8\pm 2.8)$ ~MeV/$c^2$, the total width $(32.8 \pm 5.8 \pm 8.7)$~MeV, and the electronic partial width $(184\pm 75\pm 86)$~eV with improved precision for the $\mathcal R(3760)$. Furthermore, for the $\mathcal R(3780)$ we measure the mass $(3778.7\pm 0.5\pm 0.3)$ ~MeV/$c^2$ and total width $(20.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 1.7)$~MeV with improved precision, and the electronic partial width $(265\pm 69\pm 83)$~eV. The $\mathcal R(3780)$ can be interpreted as the $1^3D_1$ state of charmonium. Its mass and total width differ significantly from the corresponding fitted values given by the Particle Data Group in 2022 by 7.1 and 3.2 times the uncertainties for $ψ(3770)$, respectively. $ψ(3770)$ has been interpreted as the $1^3D_1$ state for 45 years. △ Less

The dual-site experiment will employ an intense neutrino beam focused on a near and a far detector as it aims to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make high-precisi… ▽ More DUNE is an international experiment dedicated to addressing some of the questions at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics, including the mystifying preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe. The dual-site experiment will employ an intense neutrino beam focused on a near and a far detector as it aims to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make high-precision measurements of the PMNS matrix parameters, including the CP-violating phase. It will also stand ready to observe supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector implements liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) technology, and combines the many tens-of-kiloton fiducial mass necessary for rare event searches with the sub-centimeter spatial resolution required to image those events with high precision. The addition of a photon detection system enhances physics capabilities for all DUNE physics drivers and opens prospects for further physics explorations. Given its size, the far detector will be implemented as a set of modules, with LArTPC designs that differ from one another as newer technologies arise. In the vertical drift LArTPC design, a horizontal cathode bisects the detector, creating two stacked drift volumes in which ionization charges drift towards anodes at either the top or bottom. The anodes are composed of perforated PCB layers with conductive strips, enabling reconstruction in 3D. Light-trap-style photon detection modules are placed both on the cryostat's side walls and on the central cathode where they are optically powered. This Technical Design Report describes in detail the technical implementations of each subsystem of this LArTPC that, together with the other far detector modules and the near detector, will enable DUNE to achieve its physics goals. △ Less

Novel method to extract the femtometer structure of strange baryons using the vacuum polarization effect

Electromagnetic form factors quantify the structure of hadrons in terms of charge and magnetization distributions. While the nucleon structure has been investigated extensively, data on hyperons is still scarce. It has recently been demonstrated that electron-positron annihilations into… ▽ More One of the fundamental goals of particle physics is to gain microscopic understanding of the strong interaction. Electromagnetic form factors quantify the structure of hadrons in terms of charge and magnetization distributions. While the nucleon structure has been investigated extensively, data on hyperons is still scarce. It has recently been demonstrated that electron-positron annihilations into hyperon-antihyperon pairs provide a powerful tools to investigate their inner structure. We present a novel method useful for hyperon-antihyperon pairs of different types which exploits the cross section enhancement due to the vacuum polarization effect at the $J/ψ$ resonance. Using the 10 billion $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, this allows a thorough determination of the hyperon structure . The result is essentially a precise snapshot of a $\barΛΣ^0$~($Λ\barΣ^0$) pair in the making, encoded in the form factor ratio and the phase. Their values are measured to be $R = 0.860\pm0.029({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.})$, $ΔΦ_1=(1.011\pm0.094({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.}))~\rm rad$ for $\barΛΣ^0$ and $ΔΦ_2=(2.128\pm0.094({\rm stat.})\pm0.010({\rm syst.}))~\rm rad$ for $Λ\barΣ^0$, respectively. Furthermore, charge-parity (CP) breaking is investigated for the first time in this reaction and found to be consistent with CP symmetry. △ Less

Measurements of the $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$-induced Coherent Charged Pion Production Cross Sections on $^{12}C$ by the T2K experiment

Abstract: We report an updated measurement of the $ν_μ$-induced, and the first measurement of the $\barν_μ$-induced coherent charged pion production cross section on $^{12}C$ nuclei in the T2K experiment. This is measured in a restricted region of the final-state phase space for which $p_{μ,π} > 0.2$ GeV, $\cos(θ_μ) > 0.8$ and $\cos(θ_π) > 0.6$, and at a mean (anti)neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV using the T2K… ▽ More We report an updated measurement of the $ν_μ$-induced, and the first measurement of the $\barν_μ$-induced coherent charged pion production cross section on $^{12}C$ nuclei in the T2K experiment. This is measured in a restricted region of the final-state phase space for which $p_{μ,π} > 0.2$ GeV, $\cos(θ_μ) > 0.8$ and $\cos(θ_π) > 0.6$, and at a mean (anti)neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV using the T2K near detector. The measured $ν_μ$ CC coherent pion production flux-averaged cross section on $^{12}C$ is $(2.98 \pm 0.37 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.) \substack{ +0.49 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{ (Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The new measurement of the $\barν_μ$-induced cross section on $^{12}{C}$ is $(3.05 \pm 0.71 (stat.) \pm 0.39 (syst.) \substack{ +0.74 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{(Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The results are compatible with both the NEUT 5.4.0 Berger-Sehgal (2009) and GENIE 2.8.0 Rein-Sehgal (2007) model predictions. △ Less

Search for the lepton number violation decay $φ\to π^+ π^+ e^- e^-$ via $J/ψ\to φη$

Abstract: Using $(1.0087\pm0.0044)\times10^{10}$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the lepton number violation decay $φ\to π^+ π^+ e^- e^-$ via $J/ψ\to φη$. No signal is found and the upper limit on the branching fraction of $φ\to π^+ π^+ e^- e^-$ is set to be $9.7\times10^{-6}$ at the 90\% confidence level. This radiogenic energy output is critical to planetary dynamics and must be accurately measured for a complete understanding of the overall heat budget and thermal history of the Earth. Detecting geoneutrinos remains the only direct probe to do so and constitutes a challenging objective in modern neutrino physics. In particular, the intriguing potassium geoneutrinos have never been observed and thus far have been considered impractical to measure. We propose here a novel approach for potassium geoneutrino detection using the unique antimatter signature of antineutrinos to reduce the otherwise overwhelming backgrounds to observing this rarest signal. The proposed detection framework relies on the innovative LiquidO detection technique to enable positron (e+) identification and antineutrino interactions with ideal isotope targets identified here for the first time. The parametrization is validated through a series of maximum likelihood fits to cross-section measurements made by the T2K and MINERvA experiments, which also permit an exploration of the power of near-detector data to provide constraints on the parameters in neutrino oscillation analyses. △ Less

Combined with the results for the decays $D_s^+ \to ηe^+ν_e$ and $D_s^+ \to η^\prime e^+ν_e$, the ratios of the decay widths are examined both inclusively and in several $\ell^+ν_\ell$ four-momentum transfer ranges. No evidence for lepton flavor universality violation is found within the current statistics. The products of the hadronic form factors $f_{+,0}^{η^{(\prime)}}(0)$ and the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ are determined. The results based on the two-parameter series expansion are $f^η_{+,0}(0)|V_{cs}| = 0.452\pm0.010_{\rm stat}\pm0.007_{\rm syst}$ and $f^{η^{\prime}}_{+,0}(0)|V_{cs}| = 0.504\pm0.037_{\rm stat}\pm0.012_{\rm syst}$, which help to constrain present models on $f_{+,0}^{η^{(\prime)}}(0)$. The forward-backward asymmetries are determined to be $\langle A_{\rm FB}^η\rangle=-0.059\pm0.031_{\rm stat}\pm0.005_{\rm syst}$ and $\langle A_{\rm FB}^{η^\prime}\rangle=-0.064\pm0.079_{\rm stat}\pm0.006_{\rm syst}$ for the first time, which are consistent with the theoretical calculation. △ Less

Moreover, from the fits to the partial decay rates of $D_s^+ \to ηe^+ ν_e$ and $D_s^+ \to η^\prime e^+ ν_e$, the products of the hadronic transition form factors $f_+^{η^{(\prime)}}(0)$ and the modulus of the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ are determined by using different hadronic transition form factor parametrizations. Based on the two-parameter series expansion, the products $f^η_+(0)|V_{cs}| = 0.4519\pm0.0071_{\rm stat}\pm0.0065_{\rm syst}$ and $f^{η^\prime}_+(0)|V_{cs}| = 0.525\pm0.024_{\rm stat}\pm0.009_{\rm syst}$ are extracted. The branching fraction of the decay is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\rightarrow Λμ^+ν_μ)=(3.48\pm0.14_{\rm stat.}\pm0.10_{\rm syst.})\%$, three times more precise than the prior world average result. Tests of lepton flavor universality using $Λ_c^+\rightarrow Λ\ell^+ν_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e, μ$) decays are reported for the first time, based on measurements of the differential decay rates and the forward-backward asymmetries in separate four-momentum transfer regions. The results are compatible with Standard Model predictions. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. Abstract: A primary goal of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is to measure the $\mathcal{O}(10)$ MeV neutrinos produced by a Galactic core-collapse supernova if one should occur during the lifetime of the experiment. The liquid-argon-based detectors planned for DUNE are expected to be uniquely sensitive to the $ν_e$ component of the supernova flux, enabling a wide variety of physics… ▽ More A primary goal of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is to measure the $\mathcal{O}(10)$ MeV neutrinos produced by a Galactic core-collapse supernova if one should occur during the lifetime of the experiment. The liquid-argon-based detectors planned for DUNE are expected to be uniquely sensitive to the $ν_e$ component of the supernova flux, enabling a wide variety of physics and astrophysics measurements. A key requirement for a correct interpretation of these measurements is a good understanding of the energy-dependent total cross section $σ(E_ν)$ for charged-current $ν_e$ absorption on argon. In the context of a simulated extraction of supernova $ν_e$ spectral parameters from a toy analysis, we investigate the impact of $σ(E_ν)$ modeling uncertainties on DUNE's supernova neutrino physics sensitivity for the first time. We find that the currently large theoretical uncertainties on $σ(E_ν)$ must be substantially reduced before the $ν_e$ flux parameters can be extracted reliably: in the absence of external constraints, a measurement of the integrated neutrino luminosity with less than 10\% bias with DUNE requires $σ(E_ν)$ to be known to about 5%. The neutrino spectral shape parameters can be known to better than 10% for a 20% uncertainty on the cross-section scale, although they will be sensitive to uncertainties on the shape of $σ(E_ν)$. A direct measurement of low-energy $ν_e$-argon scattering would be invaluable for improving the theoretical precision to the needed level. △ Less

Taking $|V_{cs}|$ from a global fit in the standard model we obtain $f_{D_s^+}=(252.7\pm3.8_{\rm stat}\pm2.6_{\rm syst})$ MeV. Abstract: The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $19.7(16.3)\times10^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $4.7\times10^{20}$ POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introdu… ▽ More The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $19.7(16.3)\times10^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $4.7\times10^{20}$ POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $\sin^2θ_{13}$ and the impact of priors on the $δ_\mathrm{CP}$ measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2θ_{23}$ with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $\sin^2θ_{13}$ from reactors, $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $Δm^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ using constant $Δχ^{2}$ intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $δ_\mathrm{CP}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $δ_\mathrm{CP}=0,π$ is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $2σ$ credible level using a flat prior in $δ_\mathrm{CP}$, and just below $2σ$ using a flat prior in $\sinδ_\mathrm{CP}$. When the external constraint on $\sin^2θ_{13}$ is removed, $\sin^2θ_{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times10^{-3}$, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. Abstract: Using $(10\:087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the radiative hyperon decay $Σ\rightarrow pγ$ is studied at an electron-positron collider experiment for the first time. The absolute branching fraction is measured to be $\left(0.996 \pm 0.021_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.018_{\rm syst.}\right)\times 10^{-3}$, which is lower than its world average value by $4.2$ standard devi… ▽ More Using $(10\:087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the radiative hyperon decay $Σ\rightarrow pγ$ is studied at an electron-positron collider experiment for the first time. Abstract: Using an $e^+e^-$ collision data sample of $(27.08 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{8}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected by the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of $χ_{cJ} \to Ω^- \barΩ^+$ ($J=0,\,1,\,2$) decays with significances of $5.6σ$, $6.4σ$, and $18σ$, respectively, where the $χ_{cJ}$ mesons are produced in the radiative $ψ(3686)$ decays. First simultaneous measurement of $Ξ^0$ and $\barΞ^0$ asymmetry parameters in $ψ(3686)$ decay

Dalitz plot asymmetries in the $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decay are also explored and are found to be consistent with charge conjugation invariance. Abstract: Using 7.33 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226~GeV, we observe for the first time the decay $D^{\pm}_s\to ωπ^{\pm}η$ with a statistical significance of 7.6$σ$. The measured branching fraction of this decay is $(0.54\pm0.12\pm0.04)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Using 7.33 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226~GeV, we observe for the first time the decay $D^{\pm}_s\to ωπ^{\pm}η$ with a statistical significance of 7.6$σ$. The data samples used correspond to an integrated luminosity of $17.9\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ and were collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Three enhancements around 4.20, 4.47 and 4.67 GeV are visible. The first and third resonances are consistent with the $ψ(4230)$ and $ψ(4660)$ states, respectively, while the second one is compatible with the $ψ(4500)$ observed in the $e^{+}e^{-}\to K^{+}K^{-}J/ψ$ process. Abstract: The Cabibbo-allowed weak radiative decay $Λ_{c}^+\to Σ^+γ$ has been searched for in a sample of $Λ_{c}^+\barΛ_{c}^-$ pairs produced in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $4.5 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.60 and 4.70 GeV. We explored the differential cross sections of the reaction $e^+e^- \rightarrow \bar{n}n$ with data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII accelerator, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 354.6 pb$^{-1}$ in total at twelve center-of-mass energies between $\sqrt{s} = 2.0 - 2.95$ GeV. A relative uncertainty of 18% and 12% for the electric and magnetic form factors, respectively, is achieved at $\sqrt{s} = 2.3935$ GeV. Our results are comparable in accuracy to those from electron scattering in the comparable space-like (negative $q^2$) region of four-momentum transfer. The electromagnetic form factor ratio $R_{\rm em}\equiv |G_E|/|G_M|$ is within the uncertainties close to unity. We compare our result on $|G_E|$ and $|G_M|$ to recent model predictions, and the measurements in the space-like region to test the analyticity of electromagnetic form factors. △ Less

Using the known $Λ_c^+$ lifetime and the charge-averaged semileptonic decay width of nonstrange charmed mesons, we measure the ratio of inclusive semileptonic decay widths $Γ(Λ_c^+\rightarrow X e^+ν_e)/\barΓ(D\rightarrow Xe^+ν_e)=1.28\pm0.05$, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined. △ Less
