The leptonic decay $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$ is both rare and theoretically clean, making it an excellent probe for New Physics searches. Due to its helicity suppression in the Standard Model, this decay is particularly sensitive to new (pseudo)-scalar contributions. We present a new strategy for detecting CP-violating New Physics contributions of this kind, exploiting two observables: $\adg$, which is accessible due to the sizeable decay width difference of the $B_s$ system, and the mixing-induced CP asymmetry $\smumu$. We also utilize information from semileptonic $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ decays. Using the currently available experimental information, we find remarkably constrained regions in the $\adg$--$\smumu$ plane that serve as promising targets for future measurements.

At first sight, the recent LHCb measurement of $R_K \sim 1$ may seem to largely constrain deviations from universality in these decays. However, we show that this is actually not the case: new sources of CP violation allow for significant universality violation consistent with $R_K \sim 1$. This provides an exciting new opportunity to search for New Physics by measuring differences between CP asymmetries in $B \to Kμ^+μ^-$ and $B \to K e^+e^-$.

Intriguing results for tests of the universality of electrons and muons through measurements of rates of $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ and similar decays have been in the spotlight for years. The LHCb collaboration has recently reported new results which are in agreement with Lepton Flavour Universality, while the individual decay rates are found below their Standard Model predictions. In view of this new situation, we explore how much space is left for a violation of electron-muon universality. Considering new sources of CP violation and taking the new LHCb measurements into account, we show that significant differences between the short-distance coefficients for electronic and muonic final states are actually allowed by the current data. These patterns can be revealed through CP asymmetries in neutral and charged $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays. We obtain correlations between these observables and map them to the short-distance coefficients. This results in regions in New Physics parameter space with large differences between CP asymmetries of the decays with final-state electrons and muons, thereby leaving a lot of room for possible surprises in the future high-precision era.

The $B \to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ system is particularly interesting to explore physics beyond the Standard Model. Such effects could provide new sources of CP violation, thereby giving rise to Wilson coefficients which could not only be real, as assumed in most analyses, but also be complex. We propose a new strategy to extract the complex $C_{9 μ}$, $C_{10 μ}$ from the data, utilising the complementarity of direct CP violation in $B^+\to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ and mixing-induced CP violation arising - in addition to direct CP violation - in $B^0_d \to K_{S} μ^+μ^-$, as well as the differential rate in appropriate $q^2$ bins. The long-distance effects, which play a key role to generate the direct CP asymmetries, cannot be reliably calculated due to their non-perturbative nature. In order to describe them, we apply a model by the LHCb Collaboration employing experimental data. Assuming specific scenarios, we demonstrate the fingerprinting of CP-violating New Physics and the distinction between ambiguities in the model of the long-distance contributions. Finally, New Physics could couple differently to muons and electrons, as probed through the lepton flavour universality ratio $R_K$. We discuss these effects in the presence of CP violation and present a new way to measure the direct CP asymmetries of the $B \to K e^+ e^-$ channels.

We explore the corresponding space for New Physics left through the current data, having a careful look at analyses of the Unitarity Triangle that are needed for the Standard Model predictions of the $B_q$ mixing parameters. In particular, we explore the impact of tensions between inclusive and exclusive determinations of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$. Moreover, we focus on the angle $γ$ of the Unitarity Triangle, comparing measurements from $B\to DK$ and $B\toππ$, $ρπ$, $ρρ$ decays, where the latter are typically interpreted in terms of the angle $α$. We discuss various scenarios and present the corresponding state-of-the-art constraints on the New Physics parameters of $B_q^0-\bar B_q^0$ mixing. We point out that these results have an interesting application in the analysis of rare $B_q^0\to μ^+μ^-$ decays, allowing us to minimise the impact of CKM parameters in the search for New Physics. In view of the high-precision era, we make future projections. Interestingly, we find that for the extraction of the New Physics parameters in the $B_d$ system the determination of the apex of the Unitarity Triangle results in a key limiting factor. By contrast, the corresponding impact is negligible for the $B_s$ system, making it a promising candidate to reveal sources of New Physics.

A corresponding LHCb analysis resulted in a surprisingly large result, which is in tension with other determinations and global analyses of the Unitarity Triangle. Paying special attention to discrete ambiguities, we confirm this picture and resolve a final ambiguity. Furthermore, electroweak penguin amplitudes enter at a level comparable to the tree topologies. In the past, a discrepancy was found in the correlation between the CP asymmetries of $B_d^0 \to π^0 K_{\rm S}$. We provide the state-of-the-art picture of this situation and consider new constraints, finding that the effect has become larger. An attractive explanation is offered by a modified electroweak penguin sector. We propose a new method to determine the relevant parameters. It employs an isospin relation between the amplitudes of the $B \to πK$ decays, and makes only minimal use of the $SU(3)$ flavour symmetry. Using current data as well as future scenarios, we demonstrate how the mixing-induced CP asymmetry of $B_d^0 \to π^0 K_{\rm S}$ plays a key role in this analysis. While the branching ratio of $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ has already been measured at the LHC in the ballpark of the Standard Model expectation, there is still significant room for New-Physics effects. We discuss how these may be revealed in the future super-high precision era of $B$-decay studies by utilising new theoretically clean observables, including CP-violating asymmetries. Another promising decay is $B^0_{s}\to e^+e^-$, which has received little attention in view of its enormously helicity suppressed Standard Model branching ratio, with the most recent experimental upper bound dating back to 2009. Should this intriguing picture originate from New Physics, a modified electroweak penguin sector provides a key scenario. It includes models with extra $Z'$ bosons, which offer attractive ways to resolve anomalies in $B\to K^{(*)}\ell^+\ell^-$ measurements. We present a new strategy to reveal the underlying physics, apply it to current $B\toπK$ data, and discuss the excellent prospects for Belle II.

The decay $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ is a key probe for the search of physics beyond the Standard Model. While the current measurements of the corresponding branching ratio agree with the Standard Model within the uncertainties, significant New-Physics effects may still be hiding in $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$. In order to reveal them, the observable $\mathcal{A}^{μμ}_{ΔΓ_s}$, which is provided by the decay width difference $ΔΓ_s$ of the $B^0_s$-meson system, plays a central role. We point out that a measurement of a CP-violating observable ${\cal S}_{\rm μμ}$, which is induced through interference between $B^0_s$-$\bar B^0_s$ mixing and $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay processes, is essential to obtain the full picture, in particular to establish new scalar contributions and CP-violating phases. We illustrate these findings with future scenarios for the upgrade(s) of the LHC, exploiting also relations which emerge within an effective field theory description of the Standard Model, complemented with New Physics entering significantly beyond the electroweak scale.

Leptonic rare decays of $B^0_{s,d}$ mesons offer a powerful tool to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. The $B^0_{s}\toμ^+μ^-$ decay has been observed at the Large Hadron Collider and the first measurement of the effective lifetime of this channel was presented, in accordance with the Standard Model. On the other hand, $B^0_{s}\toτ^+τ^-$ and $B^0_{s}\to e^+e^-$ have received considerably less attention: while LHCb has recently reported a first upper limit of $6.8\times10^{-3}$ (95% C.L.) for the $B^0_s\toτ^+τ^-$ branching ratio, the upper bound $2.8\times 10^{-7}$ (90% C.L.) for the branching ratio of $B^0_s\to e^+e^-$ was reported by CDF back in 2009. We discuss the current status of the interpretation of the measurement of $B^0_{s}\toμ^+μ^-$, and explore the space for New-Physics effects in the other $B^0_{s,d}\to\ell^+\ell^-$ decays in a scenario assuming flavour-universal Wilson coefficients of the relevant four-fermion operators. While the New-Physics effects are then strongly suppressed by the ratio $m_μ/m_τ$ of the lepton masses in $B^0_s\toτ^+τ^-$, they are hugely enhanced by $m_μ/m_e$ in $B^0_s\to e^+e^-$ and may result in a $B^0_s\to e^+e^-$ branching ratio as large as about 5 times the one of $B^0_{s}\toμ^+μ^-$, which is about a factor of 20 below the CDF bound; a similar feature arises in $B^0_{d}\to e^+e^-$. Consequently, it would be most interesting to search for the $B^0_{s,d}\to e^+e^-$ channels at the LHC and Belle II, which may result in an unambiguous signal for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Particularly interesting are $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$ and $B^0_d\toπ^-π^+$ decays, which are related by the $U$-spin symmetry of strong interactions, and allow for the extraction of CP-violating phases and tests of the Standard Model. The theoretical precision is limited by $U$-spin-breaking corrections and innovative methods are needed in view of the impressive future experimental precision expected in the era of Belle II and the LHCb upgrade. We have recently proposed a novel method to determine the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing phase $φ_s$ from the $B_s^0\to K^-K^+$, $B_d^0\to π^-π^+$ system, where semileptonic $B^0_s\to K^-\ell^+ν_\ell$, $B^0_d\to π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays are a new ingredient and the theoretical situation is very favourable. We discuss this strategy in detail, with a focus on penguin contributions as well as exchange and penguin-annihilation topologies which can be probed by a variety of non-leptonic $B$ decays into charmless final states. We show that a theoretical precision as high as ${\cal O}(0.5^\circ)$ for $φ_s$ can be attained in the future, thereby offering unprecedented prospects for the search for new sources of CP violation.

LHCb has obtained first results with uncertainties at the $7^\circ$ level. Due to $U$-spin-breaking corrections, it will be challenging to reduce the uncertainty below ${\cal O}(5^\circ)$ at Belle II and the LHCb upgrade. We propose a new strategy, using $γ$ as input and utilizing $B^0_s\to K^-\ell^+ν_\ell$, $B^0_d\to π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays, which allows an extraction of $φ_s$ with a future theoretical precision of up to ${\cal O}(0.5^\circ)$, thereby matching the experimental prospects. We point out that other current $B$ decay data imply $a^s_{\rm sl} = (0.004 \pm 0.075)\times10^{-2}$. In view of this strong constraint, we propose to use $B^0_s\to D_s^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ and similar flavor-specific decays as a new tool to determine both the production asymmetry between $B^0_s$ and $\bar B^0_s$ mesons, and the CP asymmetry in the subsequent $D^\pm_s$ decays. The former serves as input for analyses of CP violation in $B^0_s$ channels, with significant room for improvement, while the latter offers an exciting laboratory for New Physics.

The decays $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+$ probe the CP-violating mixing phases $φ_d$ and $φ_s$, respectively. The theoretical uncertainty of the corresponding determinations is limited by contributions from penguin topologies, which can be included with the help of the $U$-spin symmetry of the strong interaction. We analyse the currently available data for $B^0_{d,s}\rightarrow D_{d,s}^-D_{d,s}^+$ decays and those with similar dynamics to constrain the involved non-perturbative parameters. Using further information from semileptonic $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-\ell^+ν_{\ell}$ decays, we perform a test of the factorisation approximation and take non-factorisable $SU(3)$-breaking corrections into account. The branching ratios of the $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+$, $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_d^+$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+$, $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_s^+$ decays show an interesting pattern which can be accommodated through significantly enhanced exchange and penguin annihilation topologies. This feature is also supported by data for the $B_s^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+$ channel. Moreover, there are indications of potentially enhanced penguin contributions in the $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+$ decays, which would make it mandatory to control these effects in the future measurements of $φ_d$ and $φ_s$. Measurements of CP violation in $B^0_d\to J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψφ$ decays play key roles in testing the quark-flavour sector of the Standard Model. The theoretical interpretation of the corresponding observables is limited by uncertainties from doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin topologies. With continuously increasing experimental precision, it is mandatory to get a handle on these contributions, which cannot be calculated reliably in QCD. In the case of the measurement of $\sin2β$ from $B^0_d\to J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$, the $U$-spin-related decay $B^0_s\to J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$ offers a tool to control the penguin effects. As the required measurements are not yet available, we use data for decays with similar dynamics and the $SU(3)$ flavour symmetry to constrain the size of the expected penguin corrections. We predict the CP asymmetries of $B^0_s\to J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$ and present a scenario to fully exploit the physics potential of this decay, emphasising also the determination of hadronic parameters and their comparison with theory. In the case of the benchmark mode $B^0_s\to J/ψφ$ used to determine the $B^0_s$-$\bar B^0_s$ mixing phase $φ_s$ the penguin effects can be controlled through $B^0_d\to J/ψρ^0$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays. The LHCb collaboration has recently presented pioneering results on this topic. We analyse their implications and present a roadmap for controlling the penguin effects.

The B_s to mu+ mu- decay plays an outstanding role in tests of the Standard Model and physics beyond it. The LHCb collaboration has recently reported the first evidence for this decay at the 3.5 sigma level, with a branching ratio in the ballpark of the Standard Model prediction. Thanks to the recently established sizable decay width difference of the B_s system, another observable, A^mumu_DeltaGamma, is available, which can be extracted from the time-dependent untagged B_s to mu+ mu- rate. If tagging information is available, a CP-violating asymmetry, S_mumu, can also be determined. These two observables exhibit sensitivity to New Physics that is complementary to the branching ratio. We define and analyse scenarios in which these quantities allow us to discriminate between model-independent effective operators and their CP-violating phases. In this context we classify a selection of popular New Physics models into the considered scenarios. Furthermore, we consider specific models with tree-level FCNCs mediated by a heavy neutral gauge boson, pseudoscalar or scalar, finding striking differences in the predictions of these scenarios for the observables considered and the correlations among them. We update the Standard Model prediction for the time-integrated branching ratio taking the subtle decay width difference effects into account. We find (3.56 +/- 0.18) x 10^-9, and discuss the error budget.

An overview of the most recent theoretical predictions of the corresponding branching ratios is given, emphasizing that the sizable decay width difference $ΔΓ_s$ of the $B_s$-meson system affects the $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$ channel. As a consequence, the calculated Standard Model branching ratio has to be upscaled by about 10% to BR$(B_s\to μ^+μ^-)=(3.54\pm0.30)\times 10^{-9}$. This prediction is the reference value for the comparison with the time-integrated experimental branching ratio, where LHCb has recently reported $(3.2^{+1.5}_{-1.2})\times10^{-9}$ corresponding to the first evidence for $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$. A sizable $B_s$ decay width difference $ΔΓ_s$ was recently established, which leads to subtleties in analyses of the $B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp$ branching ratios but also offers new "untagged" observables, which do not require a distinction between initially present $B^0_s$ or $\bar B^0_s$ mesons. We clarify these effects and address recent measurements of the ratio of the $B_s\to D_s^\pm K^\mp$, $B_s\to D_s^\pmπ^\mp$ branching ratios. In anticipation of future LHCb analyses, we apply the SU(3) flavour symmetry of strong interactions to convert the $B$-factory data for $B_d\to D^{(*)\pm}π^\mp$, $B_d\to D_s^{\pm}π^\mp$ decays into predictions of the $B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp$ observables, and discuss strategies for the extraction of $φ_s+γ$, with a special focus on untagged observables and the resolution of discrete ambiguities. Using our theoretical predictions as a guideline, we make simulations to estimate experimental sensitivities, and extrapolate to the end of the planned LHCb upgrade. We find that the interplay between the untagged observables, which are accessible thanks to the sizable $ΔΓ_s$, and the mixing-induced CP asymmetries, which require tagging, will play the key role for the experimental determination of $φ_s+γ$.

The LHCb experiment has recently established a sizable width difference between the mass eigenstates of the $B_s$-meson system. This phenomenon leads to a subtle difference at the 10% level between the experimental branching ratios of $B_s$ decays extracted from time-integrated, untagged data samples and their theoretical counterparts. Measuring the corresponding effective $B_s$-decay lifetimes, both branching ratio concepts can be converted into each other. The rare decay $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$ and the search for New Physics through this channel is also affected by this effect, which enhances the Standard-Model reference value of the branching ratio by O(10%), while the effective lifetime offers a new observable to search for physics beyond the Standard Model that is complementary to the branching ratio.

Moreover, we point out that $ΔΓ_s$ provides a new observable, the effective $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$ lifetime $τ_{μ^+μ^-}$, which offers a theoretically clean probe for New Physics searches that is complementary to the branching ratio. Should the $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$ branching ratio agree with the Standard Model, the measurement of $τ_{μ^+μ^-}$, which appears feasible at upgrades of the LHC experiments, may still reveal large New Physics effects.

A characteristic feature of the $B_s$-meson system is $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing, which exhibits a sizable decay width difference. The latter feature leads to a subtle complication for the extraction of branching ratios of $B_s$ decays from untagged data samples, leading to systematic biases as large as O(10%) that depend on the dynamics of the considered decay. We point out that this effect can only be corrected for using information from a time-dependent analysis and suggest the use of the effective $B_s$ decay lifetime, which can already be extracted from the untagged data sample, for this purpose. We also address several experimental issues that can play a role in the extraction of effective lifetimes at a hadron collider, and advocate the use of the $B_s$ branching ratios, as presented in this note, for consistent comparisons of theoretical calculations and experimental measurements in particle listings.

We have a critical look at these observables and show how hadronic corrections can be controlled by means of the $B_d$ decays. Using measurements of the $B^0_{s,d}\to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ branching ratios by the Belle collaboration, we discuss tests of the $SU(3)_F$ flavour symmetry of strong interactions, obtain the first constraints on the hadronic parameters entering the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη$ system, and predict the $B^0_d\to J/ψη'$ branching ratio at the $5\times10^{-6}$ level. Furthermore, we present strategies for the determination of the $η$-$η'$ mixing parameters from the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ observables. We also observe that the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη$ and $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη'$ decays are - from a formal point of view - analogous to the quark-antiquark and tetraquark descriptions of the $f_0(980)$ in the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψf_0(980)$ channels, respectively.

As the hadronic structure of the $f_0(980)$ has not yet been settled, we take a critical look at the implications for the relevant observables and address recent experimental data. It turns out that the effective lifetime of $B^0_s\to J/ψf_0(980)$ and its mixing-induced CP asymmetry $S$ are quite robust with respect to hadronic effects and thereby allow us to search for a large CP-violating $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing phase $φ_s$, which is tiny in the Standard Model. However, should small CP violation, i.e. in the range $-0.1\lsim S\lsim 0$, be found in $B^0_s\to J/ψf_0(980)$, it will be crucial to constrain hadronic corrections in order to distinguish possible New-Physics effects from the Standard Model. We point out that $B^0_d\to J/ψf_0(980)$, which has not yet been measured, is a key channel in this respect and discuss the physics potential of this decay.

Using data from the B factories and the Tevatron, we perform tests of how well non-leptonic B decays of the kind B -> D^{(*)}_{(s)} P, where P is a pion or kaon, are described within the factorization framework. We find that factorization works well - as is theoretically expected - for color-allowed, tree-diagram-like topologies. Moreover, also exchange topologies, which have a non-factorizable character, do not show any anomalous behavior. We discuss also isospin triangles between the B -> D^{(*)} pi decay amplitudes, and determine the corresponding amplitudes in the complex plane, which show a significant enhancement of the color-suppressed tree contribution with respect to the factorization picture. Using data for B -> D^{(*)} K decays, we determine SU(3)-breaking effects and cannot resolve any non-factorizable SU(3)-breaking corrections larger than \sim 5%. In view of these results, we point out that a comparison between the \bar B^0_d -> D^+π^- and \bar B^0_s -> D_s^+π^- decays offers an interesting new determination of f_d/f_s. Using CDF data, we obtain the most precise value of this ratio at CDF, and discuss the prospects for a corresponding measurement at LHCb.

Moreover, it allows us to control the hadronic penguin effects in the extraction of the B^0_d-\bar B^0_d mixing phase phi_d through a measurement of CP violation in B^0_d^0 -> J/psi K_S. We discuss the picture emerging for these measurements from an LHCb feasibility study. While LHCb will be able to extract gamma from the CP violation in B^0_d -> J/psi K_S, the main application of this channel will be the determination of hadronic penguin parameters. Such an analysis is actually needed in order to fully exploit LHCb's impressive experimental precision for the determination of phi_d from B^0_d -> J/psi K_S. We give also the target regions for the effective lifetime of B^0_s -> J/psi K_S and its CP-violating observables for improved measurements by CDF and the 2011 data taking at LHCb.

The corresponding decays are related to each other by the U-spin symmetry of strong interactions and offer determinations of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle. In the former case, we obtain gamma=(68.3^{+4.8}_{-5.7}^{+5.0}_{-3.7}) deg, which is in excellent agreement with the Standard-Model fits of the unitarity triangle. The first errors correspond to experimental input uncertainties, while the latter are an estimate of U-spin-breaking effects. In view of this result, large CP-violating new-physics effects at the amplitude level are excluded. However, the effective B_s -> K^+ K^- lifetime and the mixing-induced CP violation in this channel offer interesting probes for New Physics in B^0_s-\bar B^0_s mixing. In the case of the B_d -> π^\mp K^\pm, B_s -> pi^\pm K^\mp system, using additional information from B^\pm -> π^\pm K, we obtain a bound of gamma \leq (71.8^{+5.4}_{-4.3}) deg, and the range 24 deg \leq gamma \leq 71 deg. We perform also tests of the U-spin symmetry and do not find any indication for large non-factorizable corrections.

This channel will offer a new tool to extract the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle and to control doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin corrections to the determination of sin(2beta) from the well-known B_d^0 -> J/psi K_S mode with the help of the U-spin symmetry of strong interactions. While any competitive determination of gamma is interesting, the latter aspect is particularly relevant as LHCb will enter a territory of precision which makes the control of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed Standard-Model corrections mandatory. Using the data from CDF and the e^+e^- B factories as a guideline, we explore the sensitivity for gamma and the penguin parameters and point out that the B_s^0-\bar B_s^0 mixing phase phi_s, which is only about -2 deg in the Standard Model but may be enhanced through new physics, is a key parameter for these analyses. We find that the mixing-induced CP violation S(B_s^0 -> J/psi K_S) shows an interesting correlation with sin(phi_s), which serves as a target region for the first measurement of this observable at LHCb.
