The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

We explain recent LHCb measurements of the lepton universality ratios, $R_{D^{(*)}}^{τ/\ell}\equiv \frac{\mathcal{B}(\bar B \to D^{(*)+} τ^- \barν_τ)} {\mathcal{B}(\bar B \to D^{(*)+}\ell^- \barν_\ell)}$ and ${R(Λ_c^+)}^{τ/\ell} \equiv \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b \to Λ_c^+ τ^- \barν_τ)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b \to Λ_c^+ \ell^- \barν_{\ell})}$ with $\ell=μ$, via new physics that affects $R_D^{τ/\ell}$ and…

The scalar operator in the effective theory for new physics is indicated. We find that the forward-backward asymmetry and $τ$ polarization in $\bar{B} \to D^+ τ^{-} \barν_τ$ and $Λ_b \to Λ_c^+ τ^- \barν_τ$ decays are significantly affected by the scalar interaction. We construct a simple two Higgs doublet model as a realization of our scenario and consider lepton universality in semileptonic charm and top decays, radiative $B$ decay, $B$-mixing, and $Z \to b \bar b$.

With capabilities to collide polarized protons and deuterons with center of mass energy up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to $10^{32} \rm cm^{-2} \ s^{-1}$ for protons (an order of magnitude less for deuterons), the experiment will allow measurements of cross-sections and spin asymmetries of hadronic processes sensitive to the unpolarized and various polarized (helicity, Sivers, Boer-Mulders) gluon distributions inside the nucleons. Results from the SPD will be complementary to the present high energy spin experiments at the RHIC facility or future experiments like the EIC (at BNL) and AFTER (at LHC). SPD will provide data in moderate and large Bjorken-x for much improved global analyses of spin structures of the basic building blocks of Nature. With polarized deuteron collisions, SPD will be the unique laboratory for probing tensor polarized gluon distributions. In addition, there are also possibilities of colliding other light nuclei like Carbon at reduced collision energy and luminosity at the first stage of the experiment.

Although the model provides an improved fit (compared to the standard model) to the differential decay distributions of $B \to K^{(*)} \ell^+ \ell^-$, with $\ell= μ, e$, and $B_s \to φμ^+ μ^-$, the allowed parameter space is ruled out by measurements of atomic parity violation, $K^+ \to μ^+ + invisible$ decay, and $B_s - \overline{B}_s$ mixing, among others. To evade constraints from low energy data, we extend the model to allow for (1) additional invisible $Z_D$ decay, (2) a direct vector coupling of $Z_D$ to muons, and (3) a direct coupling of $Z_D$ to both muons and electrons, with the electron coupling fine-tuned to cancel the $Z_D$ coupling to electrons via mixing. We find that only the latter case survives all constraints.

Here we focus on the charged-current case and specifically on the decay modes $\bar{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^- \barν$ with $\ell = e$ and $μ$. The world averages of the ratios $R_D$ and $R_D^{*}$ currently differ from the Standard Model (SM) predictions by $3.4σ$ while recently a new anomaly has been observed in the forward-backward asymmetry measurement, $A_{FB}$, in $ \bar{B}^0\to D^{*+}μ^- \barν$ decay. It is found that $ΔA_{FB} = A_{FB}(B\to D^{*} μν) - A_{FB} (B\to D^{*} e ν)$ is around $4.1σ$ away from the SM prediction in an analysis of 2019 Belle data. In this work we explore possible solutions to the $ΔA_{FB}$ anomaly and point out correlated NP signals in other angular observables. These correlations between angular observables must be present in the case of beyond the Standard Model physics. We stress the importance of $Δ$ type observables that are obtained by taking the difference of the observable for the muon and the electron mode. These quantities cancel form factor uncertainties in the SM and allow for clean tests of NP. These intriguing results also suggest an urgent need for improved simulation and analysis techniques in $\bar{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^- \barν$ decays. Here we also describe a new Monte Carlo Event-generator tool based on EVTGEN that we developed to allow simulation of the NP signatures in $\bar{B}^0\to D^{*+}\ell^- ν$, which arise due to the interference between the SM and NP amplitudes. We then discuss prospects for improved observables sensitive to NP couplings with 1, 5, 50, and 250 ab$^{-1}$ of Belle II data, which seem to be ideally suited for this class of measurements.

We calculate the complete differential decay distributions for the $B$ meson decays, $\bar B \to D^{(*)} \ell \bar{X}$, to a massive right-handed (RH) neutrino in the low-energy effective field theory (LEFT) framework. We find that a massive RH neutrino does not introduce any new angular structures compared to the massless case, but can cause significant distortions in angular observables. We study the phenomenology of low-energy four-fermion operators permitted by the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) extended with RH neutrinos (SMNEFT). We show that to explain the positive value of the difference in forward-backward asymmetries, $ΔA_{\text{FB}}\equiv A_{\text{FB}}^μ-A_{\text{FB}}^e$, tentatively inferred from Belle data, the RH neutrino must be massive. We also make predictions for $q^2$ dependent angular observables to motivate future measurements.

As a demonstration of the proposed approach, we exhibit some examples of NP couplings that are consistent with current data and could explain the $ΔA_{FB}$ anomaly in $B\to D^*\ell^- ν$ while remaining consistent with other constraints. We show that the $Δ$-type observables such as $ΔA_{FB}$ and $ΔS_5$ eliminate most QCD uncertainties from form factors and allow for clean measurements of NP. We introduce correlated observables that improve the sensitivity to NP. We discuss prospects for improved observables sensitive to NP couplings with the expected 50 ab$^{-1}$ of Belle II data, which seems to be ideally suited for this class of measurements.

Small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the $φ$ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured $φ$ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au, as well as $d$$+$Au [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 83}, 024909 (2011)], at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. Comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of $φ$ mesons at midrapidity may be different in $p$$+$Al versus $p/d/$$^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in $p/d/$$^3$He$+$Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in $p$$+$Al collisions.

We present measurements of the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry $A_{LL}$ of direct-photon production in $\vec{p}+\vec{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. The measurements have been performed at midrapidity ($|η|<0.25$) with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. At relativistic energies, direct photons are dominantly produced from the initial quark-gluon hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force at leading order. Therefore, at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, where leading-order-effects dominate, these measurements provide clean and direct access to the gluon helicity in the polarized proton in the gluon-momentum-fraction range $0.02<x<0.08$, with direct sensitivity to the sign of the gluon contribution.

In the NonHolomorphic Supersymmetric Standard Model (NHSSM), the Yukawa couplings of the bottom quark ($y_b$) and the tau lepton ($y_τ$) might receive substantial supersymmetric (SUSY) radiative corrections which have prominent dependencies on the NHSSM-specific trilinear soft parameters, $A_b^\prime$ and $A_τ^\prime$, respectively, in addition to their well-known dependence on $\tanβ$ as is already present in the Minimal SUSY Standard Model (MSSM). We study to what extent these could affect the production cross sections of the heavy Higgs bosons ($H$ and $A$) in association with a pair of $b$-quarks and their decay branching ratios, in particular, to a $τ\barτ$ pair and compare them with those obtained in the MSSM. Requiring compliance with the recently observed upper bounds on the product of their total cross-section and the branching ratio to $τ\barτ$ at the 13 TeV run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), with data worth 139 fb$^{-1}$, results in an altered exclusion region in the customary $m_A-\tanβ$ plane in the framework of the NHSSM when compared to what is derived by the LHC experiments within an MSSM setup. Such alterations are estimated to be pronounced only for large $\tanβ$ ($\geq 40$) and for large, negative $A_b^\prime$ when one finds a reinforced exclusion of the $m_A-\tanβ$ plane with an excluded $m_A$ value larger by $\approx 200$ GeV, compared to the MSSM case, at $\tanβ=60$. On the other hand, the maximum relaxation in $m_A$, for a similarly large but positive $A_b^\prime$, barely exceeds $\approx 100$ GeV as a result of complementary variations in production cross-sections and decay branching fractions of the heavy, neutral Higgs bosons.

Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, $R_{xA}$, are consistent with unity for $p_T$ above 8 GeV/$c$, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-$p_T$-$π^0$ production, the nucleons in the $d$ and $^3$He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower $p_T$ resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as $p$$+$Au $>$ $d$$+$Au $>$ $^{3}$He$+$Au $>$ $p$$+$Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower $p_T$.

In particular, the analysis of data at RHIC for different geometries obtained by varying the projectile size and shape has proven insightful. In the present analysis, we find excellent agreement with the previously published PHENIX at RHIC results on elliptical and triangular flow with an independent analysis via the two-particle correlation method, which has quite different systematic uncertainties and an independent code base. In addition, the results are extended to other detector combinations with different kinematic (pseudorapidity) coverage. These results provide additional constraints on contributions from nonflow and longitudinal decorrelations.

We solve the $B\toπK$ puzzle by considering the effect of an axion-like particle (ALP) that mixes with the $π^0$ and has mass close to the $π^0$ mass. We show that the ALP can also explain the anomalies in the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments.

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR.
The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

A highly bino-like Dark Matter (DM), which is the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle (LSP), could be motivated by the stringent upper bounds on the DM direct detection rates. This is especially so when its mass is around or below 100 GeV for which such a bound tends to get most severe. Requiring not so large a higgsino mass parameter, that would render the scenario reasonably natural, prompts such a bino-like state to be relatively light. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), in the absence of comparably light scalars, such an excitation, if it has to be a thermal relic, is unable to meet the stringent experimental upper bound on its abundance unless its self-annihilation hits a funnel involving either the $Z$-boson or the Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs boson. We demonstrate that, in such a realistic situation, a highly bino-like DM of the popular $Z_3$-symmetric Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) is viable over an extended range of its mass, from our targeted maximum in the vicinity of the mass of the top quark down to about 30 GeV. This is facilitated by the presence of comparably light singlet-like states that could serve as funnel (scalars) and/or coannihilating (singlino) states even as the bino-like LSP receives a minimal (but optimal) tempering triggered by suitably light higgsino states that, in the first place, evade stringent lower bounds on their masses that can be derived from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments only in the presence of a lighter singlino-like state. An involved set of blind spot conditions is derived for the DM direct detection rates by considering for the very first time the augmented system of neutralinos comprising of the bino, the higgsinos and the singlino which highlights the important roles played by the NMSSM parameters $λ$ and $\tanβ$ in delivering a richer phenomenology.

Measurements were performed in the $π^0(η)\rightarrowγγ$ decay modes. A strong suppression of $π^0$ and $η$ meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U$+$U collisions relative to binary scaled $p$$+$$p$ results. Yields of $π^0$ and $η$ mesons measured in U$+$U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The $η$/$π^0$ ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and $e^+e^-$ collisions.

The cross section of bottom quark-antiquark ($b\bar{b}$) production in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The results are based on the yield of high mass, like-sign muon pairs measured within the PHENIX muon arm acceptance ($1.2<|y|<2.2$). The $b\bar{b}$ signal is extracted from like-sign dimuons by utilizing the unique properties of neutral $B$ meson oscillation. We report a differential cross section of $dσ_{b\bar{b}\rightarrow μ^\pmμ^\pm}/dy = 0.16 \pm 0.01~(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.02~(\mbox{syst}) \pm 0.02~(\mbox{global})$ nb for like-sign muons in the rapidity and $p_T$ ranges $1.2<|y|<2.2$ and $p_T>1$ GeV/$c$, and dimuon mass of 5--10 GeV/$c^2$. The extrapolated total cross section at this energy for $b\bar{b}$ production is $13.1 \pm 0.6~(\mbox{stat}) \pm 1.5~(\mbox{syst}) \pm 2.7~(\mbox{global})~μ$b. The total cross section is compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation and is consistent within uncertainties. The azimuthal opening angle between muon pairs from $b\bar{b}$ decays and their $p_T$ distributions are compared to distributions generated using {\sc ps pythia 6}, which includes next-to-leading order processes. The azimuthal correlations and pair $p_T$ distribution are not very well described by {\sc pythia} calculations, but are still consistent within uncertainties. Flavor creation and flavor excitation subprocesses are favored over gluon splitting.

The PHENIX experiment has measured the spin alignment for inclusive $J/ψ\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ decays in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV at midrapidity. The angular distributions have been measured in three different polarization frames, and the three decay angular coefficients have been extracted in a full two-dimensional analysis. Previously, PHENIX saw large longitudinal net polarization at forward rapidity at the same collision energy. This analysis at midrapidity, complementary to the previous PHENIX results, sees no sizable polarization in the measured transverse momentum range of $0.0<p_T<10.0$ GeV/$c$. The results are consistent with a previous one-dimensional analysis at midrapidity at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. The transverse-momentum-dependent cross section for midrapidity $J/ψ$ production has additionally been measured, and after comparison to world data we find a simple logarithmic dependence of the cross section on $\sqrt{s}$.

We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au$+$Au, $d$$+$Au and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, for direct photon $p_T$ from 5--12 GeV/$c$, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in $d$$+$Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au$+$Au compared to $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au$+$Au increases to an excess over the yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron $p_T$ and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Comparison to theoretical calculations suggests that the hadron excess arises from medium response to energy deposited by jets.

We present a dark sector model that reproduces the KOTO, MiniBooNE and muon anomalous magnetic moment anomalies. The dark sector is comprised of a light scalar singlet $S$ that has a large coupling to a slightly heavier sterile neutrino that mixes with the active neutrinos. The scalar couples to standard model fermions via Yukawa couplings, and to photons via a higher-dimensional coupling. The KOTO signal is a result of the flavor-changing penguin process $K_L \to π^0 S$ followed by the decay of $S$ to neutrinos. The sterile neutrino produced in neutrino-nucleus scattering at MiniBooNE decays to an active neutrino and $S$, which decays electromagnetically and creates an event excess at low energies.

At present, the measurements of $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and $R_{J/ψ}$ hint at new physics (NP) in $b \to c τ^- {\barν}$ decays. The angular distribution of ${\bar B} \to D^* (\to D π) \, τ^{-} {\barν}_τ$ would be useful for getting information about the NP, but it cannot be measured. The reason is that the three-momentum ${\vec p}_τ$ cannot be determined precisely since the decay products of the $τ^-$ include an undetected $ν_τ$. In this paper, we construct a measurable angular distribution by considering the additional decay $τ^- \to π^- ν_τ$. The full process is ${\bar B} \to D^* (\to D π') \, τ^{-} (\to π^- ν_τ) {\barν}_τ$, which includes three final-state particles whose three-momenta can be measured: $D$, $π'$, $π^-$. The magnitudes and relative phases of all the NP parameters can be extracted from a fit to this angular distribution. One can measure CP-violating angular asymmmetries. If one integrates over some of the five kinematic parameters parametrizing the angular distribution, one obtains (i) familiar observables such as the $q^2$ distribution and the $D^*$ polarization, and (ii) new observables associated with the $π^-$ emitted in the $τ$ decay: the forward-backward asymmetry of the $π^-$ and the CP-violating triple-product asymmetry.

These measurements are sensitive to the gluon spin contribution to the total spin of the proton in the parton momentum fraction $x$ range between 0.04 and 0.09. One can infer the sign of the gluon polarization from the ordering of pion asymmetries with charge alone. The asymmetries are found to be consistent with global quantum-chromodynamics fits of deep-inelastic scattering and data at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, which show a nonzero positive contribution of gluon spin to the proton spin.

Comparison is made to inclusive $J/ψ$ cross sections measured at \sqrts = 200 GeV and 2.76--13 TeV. The result is also compared to leading-order nonrelativistic QCD calculations coupled to a color-glass-condensate description of the low-$x$ gluons in the proton at low transverse momentum ($p_T$) and to next-to-leading order nonrelativistic QCD calculations for the rest of the $p_T$ range. These calculations overestimate the data at low $p_T$. While consistent with the data within uncertainties above $\approx3$ GeV/$c$, the calculations are systematically below the data. Advanced detector R&D requires performing computationally intensive and detailed simulations as part of the detector-design optimization process. We propose a general approach to this process based on Bayesian optimization and machine learning that encodes detector requirements. As a case study, we focus on the design of the dual-radiator Ring Imaging Cherenkov (dRICH) detector under development as part of the particle-identification system at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC is a US-led frontier accelerator project for nuclear physics, which has been proposed to further explore the structure and interactions of nuclear matter at the scale of sea quarks and gluons. We show that the detector design obtained with our automated and highly parallelized framework outperforms the baseline dRICH design within the assumptions of the current model. Our approach can be applied to any detector R&D, provided that realistic simulations are available.

Charmonium is a valuable probe in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark gluon plasma, and is also an interesting probe in small collision systems to study cold nuclear matter effects, which are also present in large collision systems. With the recent observations of collective behavior of produced particles in small system collisions, measurements of the modification of charmonium in small systems have become increasingly relevant. We present the results of $J/ψ$ measurements at forward and backward rapidity in various small collision systems, $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au, at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the observable $R_{AB}$, the nuclear modification factor, a measure of the ratio of the $J/ψ$ invariant yield compared to the scaled yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. We examine the rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality dependence of nuclear effects on $J/ψ$ production with different projectile sizes $p$ and $^3$He, and different target sizes Al and Au. The modification is found to be strongly dependent on the target size, but to be very similar for $p$$+$Au and $^{3}$He$+$Au. However, for 0%--20% central collisions at backward rapidity, the modification for $^{3}$He$+$Au is found to be smaller than that for $p$$+$Au, with a mean fit to the ratio of $0.89\pm0.03$(stat)${\pm}0.08$(syst), possibly indicating final state effects due to the larger projectile size.

At present, there are outstanding discrepancies between standard model predictions and measurements of the muon's $g-2$ and several $B$-meson properties. We resolve these anomalies by considering a two-Higgs-doublet model extended to include leptoquarks and a dark Higgs boson $S$. The leptoquarks modify $B$-meson decays and also induce an $S γγ$ coupling, which contributes to the muon's $g-2$ through a Barr-Zee diagram. We show that, for TeV-scale leptoquarks and dark Higgs boson masses $m_{S} \sim 10-200~\text{MeV}$, a consistent resolution to all of the anomalies exists. The model predicts interesting new decays, such as $B \to K^{(*)} e^+ e^-$, $B \to K^{(*)} γγ$, $K \to πγγ$, and $h \to γγγγ$, with branching fractions not far below current bounds.

Presence of nonholomorphic soft SUSY breaking terms is known to be a possibility in the popular setup of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). It has been shown that such a scenario known as NonHolomorphic Supersymmetric Standard Model (NHSSM) could remain `natural' ( i.e., not fine-tuned) even in the presence of a rather heavy higgsino-like LSP. However, it turns out that distinguishing such a scenario from the MSSM is unlikely to be an easy task, in particular at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In a first study of such a scenario at colliders (LHC), we explore a possible way that focuses on the sbottom phenomenology. This exploits the usual $\tanβ$-dependence (enhancement) of the bottom Yukawa coupling but reinforced/altered in the presence of non-vanishing nonholomorphic soft trilinear parameter $A_b^{\prime}$. For a given set of masses of the sbottom(s) and the light electroweakinos (LSP, lighter chargino etc.) which are known from experiments, the difference between the two scenarios could manifest itself via event rate in the 2b-jets + ${\, \not \! \! E_T}$ final state, which could be characteristically different from its MSSM expectation. Impact on the phenomenology of the stops at the LHC is also touched upon.

We present the physics program of the Belle II experiment, located on the intensity frontier SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Belle II collected its first collisions in 2018, and is expected to operate for the next decade. It is anticipated to collect 50/ab of collision data over its lifetime. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights "golden- and silver-channels", i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future. Experimentalists investigated the expected improvements with the large dataset expected from Belle II, taking into account improved performance from the upgraded detector.

We present measurements of charged hadron production $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ in all such collision systems over a broad pseudorapidity range and as a function of collision multiplicity. A simple wounded quark model is remarkably successful at describing the full data set. We also measure the elliptic flow $v_{2}$ over a similarly broad pseudorapidity range. These measurements provide key constraints on models of particle emission and their translation into flow.

Production of $π^0$ and $η$ mesons has been measured at midrapidity in Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV. Measurements were performed in $π^0(η)\rightarrowγγ$ decay channel in the 1(2)-20 GeV/$c$ transverse momentum range. A strong suppression is observed for $π^0$ and $η$ meson production at high transverse momentum in central Cu$+$Au collisions relative to the $p$$+$$p$ results scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. In central collisions the suppression is similar to Au$+$Au with comparable nuclear overlap. The $η/π^0$ ratio measured as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with $m_T$-scaling parameterization down to $p_T=$2 GeV/$c$, its asymptotic value is constant and consistent with Au$+$Au and $p$$+$$p$ and does not show any significant dependence on collision centrality. Similar results were obtained in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as in $e^+e^-$ collisions in a range of collision energies $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=$3--1800 GeV. This suggests that the quark-gluon-plasma medium produced in Cu$+$Cu collisions either does not affect the jet fragmentation into light mesons or it affects the $π^0$ and $η$ the same way.

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4<p_T<3$ GeV/$c$) direct-photon yields from Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=39 and 62.4 GeV. For both beam energies the direct-photon yields are substantially enhanced with respect to expectations from prompt processes, similar to the yields observed in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200. Analyzing the photon yield as a function of the experimental observable $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ reveals that the low-momentum ($>$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_γ^{\rm dir}/dη$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/dη)^α$ with $α{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield.

The multiparticle cumulant technique is used to obtain the elliptic flow coefficients $v_2\{2\}$, $v_2\{4\}$, $v_2\{6\}$, and $v_2\{8\}$, and triangular flow coefficients $v_3\{2\}$ and $v_3\{4\}$. Using the small-variance limit, we estimate the mean and variance of the event-by-event $v_2$ distribution from $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_2\{4\}$. In a complementary analysis, we also use a folding procedure to study the distributions of $v_2$ and $v_3$ directly, extracting both the mean and variance. Implications for initial geometrical fluctuations and their translation into the final state momentum distributions are discussed.

After subtraction of an underlying event using a model that includes higher-order azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$, $v_3$, and $v_4$, the away-side yield of the highest trigger-\pt ($p_T^t>4$~GeV/$c$) correlations is suppressed compared to that of correlations measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. At the lowest associated particle $p_T$ ($0.5<p_T^a<1$ GeV/$c$), the away-side shape and yield are modified relative to those in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These observations are consistent with the scenario of radiative-jet energy loss. For the low-$p_T$ trigger correlations ($2<p_T^t<4$ GeV/$c$), a finite away-side yield exists and we explore the dependence of the shape of the away-side within the context of an underlying-event model. Correlations are also studied differentially versus event-plane angle $Ψ_2$ and $Ψ_3$. The angular correlations show an asymmetry when selecting the sign of the difference between the trigger-particle azimuthal angle and the $Ψ_2$ event plane. This asymmetry and the measured suppression of the pair yield out of plane is consistent with a path-length-dependent energy loss. No $Ψ_3$ dependence can be resolved within experimental uncertainties.

We consider $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ radiative and $1/m_b$ nonperturbative corrections to the Standard Model (SM) decay rate and ignore their small effects in the NP contributions.

The azimuthal angle correlations for particle pairs with this large rapidity gap in the Au-going direction exhibit a ridge-like structure that persists up to $p_T{\approx}6$ GeV/$c$ and which strongly depends on collision centrality, which is a similar characteristic to the hydrodynamical particle flow in A+A collisions. The ridge-like structure is absent in the $d$-going direction as well as in $p$$+$$p$ collisions, in the transverse-momentum range studied. The results indicate that the ridge-like structure is shifted in the Au-going direction toward more central collisions, similar to the charged-particle pseudorapidity distributions.

When taken together with previously published measurements in $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, the results cover a broad range of small-collision-system multiplicities and intrinsic initial geometries. We observe a clear mass-dependent splitting of $v_2(p_{T})$ in $d$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au collisions, just as in large nucleus-nucleus ($A$$+$$A$) collisions, and a smaller splitting in $p$$+$Au collisions. Both hydrodynamic and transport model calculations successfully describe the data at low $p_T$ ($< 1.5$ GeV/$c$), but fail to describe various features at higher $p_T$. In all systems, the $v_2$ values follow an approximate quark-number scaling as a function of the hadron transverse kinetic energy per constituent quark($KE_T/n_q$), which was also seen previously in $A$$+$$A$ collisions.

For a number of years, there has been a certain inconsistency among the measurements of the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of the four $B \to πK$ decays ($B^+ \to π^+ K^0$, $B^+ \to π^0 K^+$, $B^0 \to π^- K^+$, $B^0 \to π^0 K^0$). In this paper, we re-examine this $B \to πK$ puzzle. We find that the key unknown parameter is $|C'/T'|$, the ratio of color-suppressed and color-allowed tree amplitudes. If this ratio is large, $|C'/T'| = 0.5$, the SM can explain the data. But if it is small, $|C'/T'| = 0.2$, the SM cannot explain the $B \to πK$ puzzle -- new physics (NP) is needed. The two types of NP that can contribute to $B \to πK$ at tree level are $Z'$ bosons and diquarks. $Z'$ models can explain the puzzle if the $Z'$ couples to right-handed $u{\bar u}$ and/or $d{\bar d}$, with $g_R^{dd} \ne g_R^{uu}$. Interestingly, half of the many $Z'$ models proposed to explain the present anomalies in $b \to s μ^+ μ^-$ decays have the required $Z'$ couplings to $u{\bar u}$ and/or $d{\bar d}$. Such models could potentially explain both the $b \to s μ^+ μ^-$ anomalies and the $B \to πK$ puzzle. The addition of a color sextet diquark that couples to $ud$ can also explain the puzzle.

The measurements of $R_{K}$ and $R_K^{*}$ provide hints for the violation of lepton universality. However, it is generally difficult to explain the $R_{K^*}$ measurement in the low $q^2$ range, $0.045 \le q^2 \le 1.1$ GeV$^2$. Light mediators offer a solution by making the Wilson coefficients $q^2$ dependent. We check if new lepton nonuniversal interactions mediated by a scalar ($S$) or vector particle ($Z^\prime$) of mass between $10-200$ MeV can reproduce the data. We find that a 25 MeV $Z^\prime$ with a $q^2$-dependent $b-s$ coupling and that couples to the electron but not the muon can explain all three anomalies in conjunction with other measurements. A similar 25 MeV $S$ provides a good fit to all relevant data except $R_{K^*}$ in the low $q^2$ bin. A 25 MeV $Z^\prime$ with a $q^2$-dependent $b-s$ coupling and that couples to the muon but not the electron provides a good fit to the combination of the $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ data, but does not fit $R_{K^*}$ in the low $q^2$ bin well.

The recent measurement of $R_{K^*}$ is yet another hint of new physics (NP), and supports the idea that it is present in $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ decays. We perform a combined model-independent and model-dependent analysis in order to deduce properties of this NP. Like others, we find that the NP must obey one of two scenarios: (I) $C_9^{μμ}({\rm NP}) < 0$ or (II) $C_9^{μμ}({\rm NP}) = - C_{10}^{μμ}({\rm NP}) < 0$. A third scenario, (III) $C_9^{μμ}({\rm NP}) = - C_{9}^{\prime μμ}({\rm NP})$, is rejected largely because it predicts $R_K = 1$, in disagreement with experiment. The simplest NP models involve the tree-level exchange of a leptoquark (LQ) or a $Z'$ boson. We show that scenario (II) can arise in LQ or $Z'$ models, but scenario (I) is only possible with a $Z'$. Fits to $Z'$ models must take into account the additional constraints from $B^0_s$-${\bar B}^0_s$ mixing and neutrino trident production. Although the LQs must be heavy, O(TeV), we find that the $Z'$ can be light, e.g., $M_{Z'} = 10$ GeV or 200 MeV.

The cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetries of $μ^{-}$ and $μ^{+}$ from open heavy-flavor decays in polarized $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV were measured by the PHENIX experiment during 2012 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Because heavy-flavor production is dominated by gluon-gluon interactions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, these measurements offer a unique opportunity to obtain information on the trigluon correlation functions. The measurements are performed at forward and backward rapidity ($1.4<|y|<2.0$) over the transverse momentum range of $1.25<p_T<7$ GeV/$c$ for the cross section and $1.25<p_T<5$ GeV/$c$ for the asymmetry measurements. The obtained cross section is compared to a fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculation. The asymmetry results are consistent with zero within uncertainties, and a model calculation based on twist-3 three-gluon correlations agrees with the data.

Abstract:
We show that the $R_K$ puzzle in LHCb data and the discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon can be simultaneously explained if a 10 MeV mass $Z^\prime$ boson couples to the muon but not the electron, and that clear evidence of the nonstandard matter interactions of neutrinos induced by this coupling may be found at DUNE.

We report the first measurement of the fraction of $J/ψ$ mesons coming from $B$-meson decay ($F_{B{\rightarrow}J/ψ}$) in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 510 GeV. The measurement is performed using the forward silicon vertex detector and central vertex detector at PHENIX, which provide precise tracking and distance-of-closest-approach determinations, enabling the statistical separation of $J/ψ$ due to $B$-meson decays from prompt $J/ψ$. The measured value of $F_{B{\rightarrow}J/ψ}$ is 8.1\%$\pm$2.3\% (stat)$\pm$1.9\% (syst) for $J/ψ$ with transverse momenta $0<p_T<5$ GeV/$c$ and rapidity $1.2<|y|<2.2$. The measured fraction $F_{B{\rightarrow}J/ψ}$ at PHENIX is compared to values measured by other experiments at higher center of mass energies and to fixed-order-next-to-leading-logarithm and color-evaporation-model predictions. The $b\bar{b}$ cross section per unit rapidity ($dσ/dy(pp{\rightarrow}b\bar{b})$) extracted from the obtained $F_{B{\rightarrow}J/ψ}$ and the PHENIX inclusive $J/ψ$ cross section measured at 200 GeV scaled with color-evaporation-model calculations, at the mean $B$ hadron rapidity $y={\pm}1.7$ in 510 GeV $p$$+$$p$ collisions, is $3.63^{+1.92}_{-1.70}μ$b, and it is consistent with the fixed-order-next-to-leading-logarithm calculations.

In all frames the polar coefficient $λ_θ$ is strongly negative at low $p_{T}$ and becomes close to zero at high $p_{T}$, while the azimuthal coefficient $λ_φ$ is close to zero at low $p_{T}$, and becomes slightly negative at higher $p_{T}$. The frame-independent coefficient $\tildeλ$ is strongly negative at all $p_{T}$ in all frames. The data are compared to the theoretical predictions provided by nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics models.

We explore the vacua of the $Z_3$-symmetric Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) and their stability by going beyond the simplistic paradigm that works with a tree-level neutral scalar potential and adheres to some specific flat directions in the field space. Key effects are demonstrated by first studying the profiles of this potential under various circumstances of physical interest via a semi-analytical approach. The results thereof are compared to the ones obtained from a dedicated package like \veva ~which further incorporates the thermal effects to the potential. Regions of the phenomenological NMSSM (pNMSSM) parameter space that render the desired symmetry breaking (DSB) vacuum absolutely stable, long- or short-lived (in relation to the age of the Universe) under quantum/thermal tunneling are delineated. Regions that result in color and charge breaking (CCB) minima are also presented. It is demonstrated that light singlet scalars along with a light LSP (lightest supersymmetric particle) having an appreciable singlino admixture are compatible with a viable DSB vacuum and are much relevant for the collider experiments.

$R_K$ and $R_{D^{(*)}}$ are two $B$-decay measurements that presently exhibit discrepancies with the SM. Recently, using an effective field theory approach, it was demonstrated that a new-physics model can simultaneously explain both the $R_K$ and $R_{D^{(*)}}$ puzzles. There are two UV completions that can give rise to the effective Lagrangian: (i) $VB$: a vector boson that transforms as an $SU(2)_L$ triplet, as in the SM, (ii) $U_1$: an $SU(2)_L$-singlet vector leptoquark. In this paper, we examine these models individually. A key point is that $VB$ contributes to $B^0_s$-${\bar B}^0_s$ mixing and $τ\to 3μ$, while $U_1$ does not. We show that, when constraints from these processes are taken into account, the $VB$ model is just barely viable. It predicts ${\cal B} (τ^-\toμ^-μ^+μ^-) \simeq 2.1 \times 10^{-8}$. This is measurable at Belle II and LHCb, and therefore constitutes a smoking-gun signal of $VB$. For $U_1$, there are several observables that may point to this model. Perhaps the most interesting is the lepton-flavor-violating decay $Υ(3S) \to μτ$, which has previously been overlooked in the literature. $U_1$ predicts ${\cal B}(Υ(3S) \to μτ)|_{\rm max} = 8.0 \times 10^{-7}$. Thus, if a large value of ${\cal B}(Υ(3S) \to μτ)$ is observed -- and this should be measurable at Belle II -- the $U_1$ model would be indicated.

Dihadron and isolated direct photon-hadron angular correlations are measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. Correlations of charged hadrons of $0.7<p_T<10$ GeV/$c$ with $π^0$ mesons of $4<p_T<15$ GeV/$c$ or isolated direct photons of $7<p_T<15$ GeV/$c$ are used to study nonperturbative effects generated by initial-state partonic transverse momentum and final-state transverse momentum from fragmentation. The nonperturbative behavior is characterized by measuring the out-of-plane transverse momentum component $p_{\rm out}$ perpendicular to the axis of the trigger particle, which is the high-$p_T$ direct photon or $π^0$. Nonperturbative evolution effects are extracted from Gaussian fits to the away-side inclusive-charged-hadron yields for different trigger-particle transverse momenta ($p_T^{\rm trig}$). The Gaussian widths and root mean square of $p_{\rm out}$ are reported as a function of the interaction hard scale $p_T^{\rm trig}$ to investigate possible transverse-momentum-dependent evolution differences between the $π^0$-h$^\pm$ and direct photon-h$^\pm$ correlations and factorization breaking effects. The widths are found to decrease with $p_T^{\rm trig}$, which indicates that the Collins-Soper-Sterman soft factor is not driving the evolution with the hard scale in nearly back-to-back dihadron and direct photon-hadron production in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. This behavior is in contrast to Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering measurements.
