Double beta plus decay is a rare nuclear disintegration process. Difficulties in its measurement arise from suppressed decay probabilities, experimentally challenging decay signatures and low natural abundances of suitable candidate nuclei. In this article, we propose a new detector concept to overcome these challenges. It is based on the first-time combination of hybrid and opaque scintillation detector technology paired with novel light read-out techniques. This approach is particularly suitable detecting positrons (beta plus) signatures. We expect to discover two-neutrino double beta plus decay modes within 1 tonne-week exposure and are able to probe neutrinoless double beta plus decays at several orders of magnitude improved significance compared to current experimental limits.

The intermittency analysis uses statistically independent data sets for every subdivision in transverse and cumulative-transverse momentum variables.
The results obtained do not indicate the searched intermittent pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated protons and the intermittency index is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model.

Collisions of atomic nuclei at relativistic velocities produce new particles, predominantly mesons containing one valence quark and one valence anti-quark. These particles are produced in strong interactions, which preserve an approximate symmetry between up ($u$) and down ($d$) quarks. In the case of $K$ meson production, if this symmetry were exact, it would result in equal numbers of charged ($K^+$ and $K^-$) and neutral ($K^0$ and $\overline K^0$) mesons in the final state. In this Letter, we report a measurement of the relative abundance of charged over neutral $K$ meson production in collisions of argon and scandium nuclei at a center-of-mass energy of 11.9 GeV per nucleon pair. We find that production of $\mathit{K^+}$ and $\mathit{K^-}$ mesons at mid-rapidity is $(18.4\pm 6.1)\%$ higher than that of the neutral $K$ mesons. The origin of this unexpected excess remains to be elucidated.

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$ produced in $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13$A$, 19$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 75$A$ and 150$A$~\GeVc. The analysis uses the 10\% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm$/$π^\pm$ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm$ transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $p$+$p$ and central Pb+Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

This paper reports measurements of two-pion Bose-Einstein (HBT) correlations in Be+Be collisions at a beam momentum of 150$A\,\mbox{GeV}/\textit{c}$ by the $\mbox{NA61/SHINE}$ experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. The obtained momentum space correlation functions can be well described by a Lévy distributed source model. The transverse mass dependence of the Lévy source parameters is presented, and their possible theoretical interpretations are discussed. The results show that the Lévy exponent $α$ is approximately constant as a function of $m_{\rm{T}}$ , and far from both the Gaussian case of $α= 2$ or the conjectured value at the critical endpoint, $α= 0.5$. The radius scale parameter $R$ shows a slight decrease in $m_{\rm{T}}$, which can be explained as a signature of transverse flow. Finally, an approximately constant trend of the intercept parameter $λ$ as a function of $m_{\rm{T}}$ was observed, different from measurement results at RHIC.

Decays of these neutral hadrons impact the measured $π^+$, $π^-$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$ multiplicities in the 120 GeV/$c$ proton-carbon reaction, which are crucial inputs for long-baseline neutrino experiment predictions of neutrino beam flux. The double-differential multiplicities presented here will be used to more precisely measure charged-hadron multiplicities in this reaction, and to re-weight neutral hadron production in neutrino beam Monte Carlo simulations.

The amount of energy released by a nuclear recoil ionizing the atoms of the active volume of detection appears "quenched" compared to an electron of the same kinetic energy. This different behavior in ionization between electrons and nuclei is described by the Ionization Quenching Factor (IQF) and it plays a crucial role in direct dark matter searches. For low kinetic energies (below $50~\mathrm{keV}$), IQF measurements deviate significantly from common models used for theoretical predictions and simulations. We report measurements of the IQF for proton, an appropriate target for searches of Dark Matter candidates with a mass of approximately 1 GeV, with kinetic energies in between $2~\mathrm{keV}$ and $13~\mathrm{keV}$ in $100~\mathrm{mbar}$ of methane. We used the Comimac facility in order to produce the motion of nuclei and electrons of controlled kinetic energy in the active volume, and a NEWS-G SPC to measure the deposited energy. The Comimac electrons are used as reference to calibrate the detector with 7 energy points. A detailed study of systematic effects led to the final results well fitted by $\mathrm{IQF}~(E_K)= E_K^α~/~(β+ E_K^α)$ with $α=0.70\pm0.08$ and $β= 1.32\pm0.17$. In agreement with some previous works in other gas mixtures, we measured less ionization energy than predicted from SRIM simulations, the difference reaching $33\%$ at $2~\mathrm{keV}$

The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The \textit{template} method was used to extract the $K^{*}(892)^0$ signal. Transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The mean multiplicities of $K^{*}(892)^0$ mesons were found to be $(35.1 \pm 1.3 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 3.6 \mathrm{(sys)) \cdot 10^{-3}}$ at 40 GeV/$c$ and $(58.3 \pm 1.9 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 4.9 \mathrm{(sys)) \cdot 10^{-3}}$ at 80 GeV/$c$. The NA61/SHINE results are compared with the EPOS1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data. The transverse mass spectra of $K^{*}(892)^0$ mesons and other particles previously reported by NA61/SHINE were fitted within the Blast-Wave model. The transverse flow velocities are close to 0.1--0.2 of the speed of light and are significantly smaller than the ones determined in heavy nucleus-nucleus interactions at the same beam momenta.

Kaluza-Klein (KK) axions appear in theories with extra dimensions as higher mass, significantly shorter lifetime, excitations of the Peccei-Quinn axion. When produced in the Sun, they would remain gravitationally trapped in the solar system, and their decay to a pair of photons could provide an explanation of the solar corona heating problem. A low-density detector would discriminate such a signal from the background, by identifying the separation of the interaction point of the two photons. The NEWS-G collaboration uses large volume Spherical Proportional Counters, gas-filled metallic spheres with a spherical anode in their centre. After observation of a single axionlike event in a 42 day long run with the SEDINE detector, a $90\%$ C.L. upper limit of $g_{aγγ}<8.99\cdot10^{-13}\,GeV^{-1}$ is set on the axion-photon coupling for a KK axion density on Earth of $n_{a}=4.07\cdot10^{13}\,m^{-3}$ and two extra dimensions of size $R = 1\,eV^{-1}$.

This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of $π^{-}$ mesons produced in $central$ ${}^{40}$Ar+${}^{45}$Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13$A$, 19$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 75$A$ and 150$A$ GeV/$c$. Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions -- mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity -- are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Monte Carlo modeling was used to study the modulation sensitivity of the data over a broad range of amplitudes and frequencies. The production cross section of 30.92 GeV/$c$ protons on carbon is measured by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS by means of beam attenuation in a copy (replica) of the 90-cm-long target of the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment. The employed method for direct production cross-section estimation minimizes model corrections for elastic and quasi-elastic interactions. The obtained production cross section is $σ_\mathrm{prod}~=~227.6~\pm~0.8\mathrm{(stat)}~_{-~3.2}^{+~1.9}\mathrm{(sys)}~{-~0.8}\mathrm{(mod)}$ mb. It is in agreement with previous NA61/SHINE results obtained with a thin carbon target, while providing improved precision with a total fractional uncertainty of less than 2$\%$. This direct measurement is performed to reduce the uncertainty on the T2K neutrino flux prediction associated with the re-weighting of the interaction rate of neutrino-yielding hadrons.

This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$ produced in the 20$\%$ most $central$ $^7$Be+$^9$Be collisions at beam momenta of 19$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 75$A$ and 150$A$ GeV/$c$. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm$/$π^\pm$ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm$ transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic $p$+$p$ reactions. The new results are compared to the world data on $p$+$p$ and Pb+Pb collisions as well as to predictions of the EPOS, UrQMD, AMPT, PHSD and SMASH models.

Measurements of multiplicity fluctuations of identified hadrons produced in inelastic p+p interactions at 31, 40, 80, and 158~\GeVc beam momentum are presented. Three different measures of multiplicity fluctuations are used: the scaled variance $ω$ and strongly intensive measures $Σ$ and $Δ$. These fluctuation measures involve second and first moments of joint multiplicity distributions. Data analysis is performed using the Identity method which corrects for incomplete particle identification. Strongly intensive quantities are calculated in order to allow for a direct comparison to corresponding results on nucleus-nucleus collisions. The results for different hadron types are shown as a function of collision energy. A comparison with predictions of string-resonance Monte-Carlo models: Epos, Smash and Venus, is also presented.

The NA61/SHINE collaboration studies at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) the onset of deconfinement in hadronic matter by the measurement of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra and mean multiplicities of $π^{-}$ mesons produced in the 5\% most \textit{central} $^7$Be+$^9$Be collisions at beam momenta of 19$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 75$A$ and 150$A$ GeV/$c$ obtained by the so-called $h^-$ method which does not require any particle identification.
The shape of the transverse mass spectra differs from the shapes measured in central Pb+Pb collisions and inelastic p+p interactions. The normalized width of the rapidity distribution decreases with increasing collision energy and is in between the results for inelastic nucleon-nucleon and central Pb+Pb collisions. The mean multiplicity of pions per wounded nucleon in \textit{central} $^7$Be+$^9$Be collisions is close to that in central Pb+Pb collisions up to 75$A$GeV/$c$. However, at the top SPS energy the result is close to the one for inelastic nucleon-nucleon interactions.
The results are discussed in the context of predictions for the onset of deconfinement at the CERN SPS collision energies.

New Experiments with Spheres-Gas (NEWS-G) is a dark matter direct detection experiment that will operate at SNOLAB (Canada). Similar to other rare-event searches, the materials used in the detector construction are subject to stringent radiopurity requirements. The detector features a 140-cm diameter proportional counter comprising two hemispheres made from commercially sourced 99.99% pure copper. Such copper is widely used in rare-event searches because it is readily available, there are no long-lived Cu radioisotopes, and levels of non-Cu radiocontaminants are generally low. However, measurements performed with a dedicated 210Po alpha counting method using an XIA detector confirmed a problematic concentration of 210Pb in bulk of the copper. To shield the proportional counter's active volume, a low-background electroforming method was adapted to the hemispherical shape to grow a 500-$μ$m thick layer of ultra-radiopure copper to the detector's inner surface. In this paper the process is described, which was prototyped at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), USA, and then conducted at full scale in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane in France. The radiopurity of the electroplated copper was assessed through Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Measurements of samples from the first (second) hemisphere give 68% confidence upper limits of <0.58 $μ$Bq/kg (<0.24 $μ$Bq/kg) and <0.26 $μ$Bq/kg (<0.11 $μ$Bq/kg) on the 232Th and 238U contamination levels, respectively. These results are comparable to previously reported measurements of electroformed copper produced for other rare-event searches, which were also found to have low concentration of 210Pb consistent with the background goals of the NEWS-G experiment.

Measurements were carried out for unlike-sign and like-sign charge hadron pairs independently. The $C(Δη,Δφ)$ correlation functions were compared with results from a similar analysis on p+p interactions at similar beam momenta per nucleon. General trends of the back-to-back correlations are similar in central Be+Be collisions and p+p interactions, but are suppressed in magnitude due to the increased combinatorial background. Predictions from the EPOS and UrQMD models are compared to the measurements. Evolution of an enhancement around $(Δη,Δφ) = (0,0)$ with incident energy is observed in central Be+Be collisions. It is not predicted by both models and almost non-existing in proton-proton collisions at the same momentum per nucleon.

Double differential distributions in rapidity y and transverse momentum $p_{T}$ are obtained from a sample of 33M inelastic events. The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra are compared to transport model predictions. The $Ξ^{-}$ mean multiplicity in inelastic p+p interactions at 158~\GeVc is used to quantify the strangeness enhancement in A+A collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair.

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS is performing a uniqe study of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter by varying collision energy and nuclear mass number of colliding nuclei. In central Pb+Pb collisions the NA49 experiment found structures in the energy dependence of several observables in the CERN SPS energy range that had been predicted for the transition to a deconfined phase. New measurements of NA61/SHINE find intriguing similarities in p+p interactions for which no deconfinement transition is expected at SPS energies. Possible implications will be discussed.

Precise knowledge of hadron production rates in the generation of neutrino beams is necessary for accelerator-based neutrino experiments to achieve their physics goals. NA61/SHINE, a large-acceptance hadron spectrometer, has recorded hadron+nucleus interactions relevant to ongoing and future long-baseline neutrino experiments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This paper presents three analyses of interactions of 60 GeV/$c$ $π^+$ with thin, fixed carbon and beryllium targets. Integrated production and inelastic cross sections were measured for both of these reactions. In an analysis of strange, neutral hadron production, differential production multiplicities of $K^0_{S}$, $Λ$ and anti-$Λ$ were measured. Lastly, in an analysis of charged hadron production, differential production multiplicities of $π^+$, $π^-$, $K^+$, $K^-$ and protons were measured. These measurements will enable long-baseline neutrino experiments to better constrain predictions of their neutrino flux in order to achieve better precision on their neutrino cross section and oscillation measurements.

Results on $φ$ meson production in inelastic p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $φ\to K^+K^-$ decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $φ$ mesons as a function of rapidity $y$ and transverse momentum $p_T$ for proton beam momenta of 80 GeV/c and 158 GeV/c, as well as single differential spectra of $y$ or $p_T$ for beam momentum of 40 GeV/c. The corresponding total $φ$ yields per inelastic p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $φ$ meson production in p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $φ$ mesons in p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observables.

A measurement of the form factors of charged kaon semileptonic decays is presented, based on $4.4 \times 10^6$ $K^\pm \to π^0 e^\pm ν_e$ ($K^\pm_{e3}$) and $2.3 \times 10^6$ $K^\pm \to π^0 μ^\pm ν_μ$ ($K^\pm_{\mu3}$) decays collected in 2004 by the NA48/2 experiment. The results are obtained with improved precision as compared to earlier measurements. The combination of measurements in the $K^\pm_{e3}$ and $K^\pm_{\mu3}$ modes is also presented.

Measurements of the $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, and proton double differential yields emitted from the surface of the 90-cm-long carbon target (T2K replica) were performed for the incoming 31 GeV/c protons with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS using data collected during 2010 run. The double differential $π^{\pm}$ yields were measured with increased precision compared to the previously published NA61/SHINE results, while the $K^{\pm}$ and proton yields were obtained for the first time. A strategy for dealing with the dependence of the results on the incoming proton beam profile is proposed. The purpose of these measurements is to reduce significantly the (anti)neutrino flux uncertainty in the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment by constraining the production of (anti)neutrino ancestors coming from the T2K target.

The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $\left|M^{2ν}\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$. In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) using 0.93 kg of $^{82}$Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $T_{1/2}^{0ν} > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\mbox{y} \,(90\%\,\mbox{C.L.})$ for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_ν \rangle < \left(1.2 - 3.0\right) \,\mbox{eV}$, where the range reflects $0νββ$ nuclear matrix element values from different calculations. Furthermore, constraints on lepton number violating parameters for other $0νββ$ mechanisms, such as right-handed currents, majoron emission and R-parity violating supersymmetry modes have been set.

In the absence of signals, upper limits are set on the products of branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(K^{\pm}\toμ^{\pm}N_4)\mathcal{B}(N_4\toπμ)$ and $\mathcal{B}(K^{\pm}\toπ^{\pm}X)\mathcal{B}(X\toμ^+μ^-)$ for ranges of assumed resonance masses and lifetimes. The limits are in the $(10^{-11},10^{-9})$ range for resonance lifetimes below 100 ps.

The corresponding limit on the half-life is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{0ν} \ge 1.0 \times 10^{23}$ y at the $90$ % C.L. which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_ν \rangle \le 1.4-2.5$ eV depending on the nuclear matrix elements considered. We construct a complete background model for this isotope, including a measurement of the two-neutrino double-$β$ decay half-life of $T^{2ν}_{1/2}=$[9.34 $\pm$ 0.22 (stat.) $^{+0.62}_{-0.60}$ (syst.)]$\times 10^{18}$ y for the ground state transition, which represents the most precise result to date for this isotope. We perform a multivariate analysis to search for \zeronu decays in order to improve the sensitivity and, in the case of observation, disentangle the possible underlying decay mechanisms. As no evidence for \zeronu decay is observed, we derive lower limits on half-lives for several mechanisms involving physics beyond the Standard Model. The observed lower limit, assuming light Majorana neutrino exchange mediates the decay, is $T^{0ν}_{1/2} >$ 2.0 $\times 10^{22}$ y at the 90% C.L., corresponding to an upper limit on the effective neutrino mass of $\langle m_ν \rangle$ $<$ 1.6 - 5.3 eV..

The half-life for the two-neutrino double-$β$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ has been measured to be $T^{2ν}_{1/2}\,=\,[6.4\, ^{+0.7}_{-0.6}{\rm (stat.)} \, ^{+1.2}_{-0.9}{\rm (syst.)}] \times 10^{19}\,{\rm yr}$. A search for neutrinoless double-$β$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ yields a null result and a corresponding lower limit on the half-life is found to be $T^{0ν}_{1/2} > 2.0 \times 10^{22}\,{\rm yr}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, translating into an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $< m_{ββ} > < 6.0 - 26$ ${\rm eV}$, with the range reflecting different nuclear matrix element calculations. Limits are also set on models involving Majoron emission and right-handed currents.

The newly built second experimental area EAR2 of the n_TOF spallation neutron source at CERN allows to perform (n, charged particles) experiments on short-lived highly radioactive targets. This paper describes a detection apparatus and the experimental procedure for the determination of the cross-section of the 7Be(n,α) reaction, which represents one of the focal points toward the solution of the cosmological Lithium abundance problem, and whose only measurement, at thermal energy, dates back to 1963. The apparently unsurmountable experimental difficulties stemming from the huge 7Be γ-activity, along with the lack of a suitable neutron beam facility, had so far prevented further measurements. The detection system is subject to considerable radiation damage, but is capable of disentangling the rare reaction signals from the very high background. This newly developed setup could likely be useful also to study other challenging reactions requiring the detectors to be installed directly in the neutron beam.

Measurements of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations of charged particles were performed in inelastic p+p interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c beam momentum. Results for the scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution and for three strongly intensive measures of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations \$Δ[P_{T},N]\$, \$Σ[P_{T},N]\$ and \$Φ_{p_T}\$ are presented. For the first time the results on fluctuations are fully corrected for experimental biases. The results on multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations significantly deviate from expectations for the independent particle production. They also depend on charges of selected hadrons. The string-resonance Monte Carlo models EPOS and UrQMD do not describe the data. The scaled variance of multiplicity fluctuations is significantly higher in inelastic p+p interactions than in central Pb+Pb collisions measured by NA49 at the same energy per nucleon. This is in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of the Wounded Nucleon Model. Within the statistical framework the enhanced multiplicity fluctuations in inelastic p+p interactions can be interpreted as due to event-by-event fluctuations of the fireball energy and/or volume.

A study of the differential rate provides the first measurement of the hadronic form factor variation in the plane $(M_{ππ}^2,M_{eν}^2)$ and brings evidence for a cusp-like structure in the distribution of the squared $π^{0} π^{0}$ invariant mass around $4m_{π^+}^2$. Exploiting a model independent description of this form factor, the branching ratio, inclusive of radiative decays, is obtained using the $\mathrm{K^{\pm}} \rightarrow π^{0} π^{0} π^{\pm}$ decay mode as normalization. It is measured to be BR($\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{e}4}^{00}$) = $(2.552 \pm 0.010_{stat} \pm 0.010_{syst} \pm 0.032_{ext} ) \times 10^{-5}$, which improves the current world average precision by an order of magnitude while the $1.4\%$ relative precision is dominated by the external uncertainty from the normalization mode. A comparison with the properties of the corresponding mode involving a $π^{+} π^{-}$ pair ($\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{e}4}^{+-}$) is also presented.

Abstract:
We report the results of a search for the neutrinoless double-$β$ decay (0$νββ$) of $^{100}$Mo, using the NEMO-3 detector to reconstruct the full topology of the final state events. With an exposure of 34.7 kg.y, no evidence for the 0$νββ$ signal has been found, yielding a limit for the light Majorana neutrino mass mechanism of $T_{1/2}(0νββ)>1.1 \times 10^{24}$ years (90% C.L.) once both statisti…

We report the results of a search for the neutrinoless double-$β$ decay (0$νββ$) of $^{100}$Mo, using the NEMO-3 detector to reconstruct the full topology of the final state events. With an exposure of 34.7 kg.y, no evidence for the 0$νββ$ signal has been found, yielding a limit for the light Majorana neutrino mass mechanism of $T_{1/2}(0νββ)>1.1 \times 10^{24}$ years (90% C.L.) once both statistical and systematic uncertainties are taken into account. Depending on the Nuclear Matrix Elements this corresponds to an upper limit on the Majorana effective neutrino mass of $< m_ν > < 0.3-0.9$ eV (90% C.L.). Constraints on other lepton number violating mechanisms of 0$νββ$ decays are also given. Searching for high-energy double electron events in all suitable sources of the detector, no event in the energy region [3.2-10] MeV is observed for an exposure of 47 kg.y.

Abstract:
The NA48/2 experiment at CERN collected two data samples with minimum bias trigger conditions in 2003 and 2004. A measurement of the rate and dynamic properties of the rare decay $K^\pm\toπ^\pmγγ$ from these data sets based on 149 decay candidates with an estimated background of $15.5\pm0.7$ events is reported. The model-independent branching ratio in the kinematic range $z=(m_{γγ}/m_K)^2>0.2$ is…

The measurements were performed using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron.
Two-dimensional spectra are determined in terms of rapidity and transverse momentum. Their properties such as the width of rapidity distributions and the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra are extracted and their collision energy dependences are presented. The results on inelastic p+p interactions are compared with the corresponding data on central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS.
The results presented in this paper are part of the NA61/SHINE ion program devoted to the study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter. They are required for interpretation of results on nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions.

Abstract:
A sample of more than one million Ke4 decay candidates with less than one percent background contamination has been collected by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2003-2004, allowing a detailed study of the decay properties. The branching ratio, inclusive of radiative Ke4gamma decays, is measured to be BR(Ke4) = (4.257 +/- 0.016_exp +/- 0.031_ext) x 10-5 with a total relative error of 0.8%.…

This measurement complements the study of S- and P-wave hadronic form factors by assigning absolute values to the relative hadronic form factors obtained earlier in a simultaneous analysis of the pion-pion scattering lengths conducted on the same data sample. The overall form factor normalization f_s = 5.705 +/- 0.017_exp +/- 0.031_ext is obtained with a total relative precision of 0.6%.

Spectra of positively charged kaons in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c were measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2007 with a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Interaction cross sections and charged pion spectra were already measured using the same set of data. These new measurements in combination with the published ones are required to improve predictions of the neutrino flux for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. In particular, the knowledge of kaon production is crucial for precisely predicting the intrinsic electron neutrino component and the high energy tail of the T2K beam. The results are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in 2 intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 20 up to 240 mrad. The kaon spectra are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. Using the published pion results and the new kaon data, the K+/π+ ratios are computed.

The existence of electric dipole moments (EDM) for fundamental particles signals time-reversal symmetry (T) violation accompanied by violation of parity (P); only upper limits have been established to date. Time-reversal violation in turn implies CP violation under the assumption that CPT is a good symmetry. The neutron is an attractive system for an EDM search, both because it is neu- tral and because a neutron EDM would be relatively easier to interpret than the comparable quantity for a nucleus or even an atom. We introduce briefly the key experimental requirements for such search and describe some aspects of the neutron EDM experiment planned for the Spallation Neutron Source at the U.S. Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The mass spectrum is well described by the superposition of the two-body and Dalitz decays of the light neutral mesons $η$, $ρ$, $ω$, $η'$ and $φ$. A new high-precision measurement of the electromagnetic transition form factors of the $η$ and $ω$ mesons is presented, complemented with a measurement of the temperature parameter of the $ρ$ meson in cold nuclear matter. The $\pt$ spectra for the $ω$ and $φ$ mesons are extracted in the full $\pt$ range accessible, up to $\pt = 2$ GeV/$c$. The nuclear dependence of the production cross sections for the $η$, $ω$ and $φ$ mesons has been investigated in terms of the power law $σ_\mathrm{pA} \propto \mathrm{A}^α$, and the $α$ parameter was studied as a function of $\pt$.

The NA60 experiment has studied low-mass muon pairs production in proton-nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/$c$ at the CERN SPS. The mass spectrum is well described by the superposition of the two-body and Dalitz decays of the light neutral mesons $η$, $ρ$, $ω$, $η'$ and $φ$. The large collected statistics allows to isolate the contributions due to the Dalitz decays of the $η$ and $ω$ mesons, from which the electromagnetic transition form factors of the two mesons have been extracted. The found values agree with the previous available measurements, improving their uncertainty thanks to the higher statistics. The results thus confirm the discrepancy with the prediction of the Vector Meson Dominance model in the case of the electromagnetic form factor of the $ω$ meson.

We report on the measurement of the direct emission (DE) and interference (INT) terms of the K\pm -> π\pmπ^0 g decay by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS. From the data collected during 2003 and 2004 about 600k such decay candidates have been selected. The relative amounts of DE and INT with respect to the internal bremsstrahlung (IB) contribution have been measured in the range 0<T*π<80 MeV:
Frac_{DE} (0<T*π<80 MeV) = (3.32\pm 0.15_{stat} \pm 0.14_{sys})x10^{-2}
Frac_{INT} (0<T*π<80 MeV) = (- 2.35\pm 0.35_{stat} \pm 0.39_{sys})x10^{-2}, where T*pi is the kinetic energy of the charged pion in the kaon rest frame. This is the first observation of an interference term in T*πdecays. In addition, a limit on the CP violating asymmetry in the K^+ and K^- branching ratios for this channel has been determined to be less than 1.5x10^{-3} at 90% confidence level.
