A novel measurement of initial-state gluon radiation in hadron collisions using Drell-Yan events

In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CDF Run II detector, $<p_T^{DY}>$ is measured as a function of the Z/$γ^*$ invariant mass. It is found that these two observables have a dependence, $<p_T^{DY}> = -8 + 2.2 \ln m_{DY}^2$ [GeV/c], where $m_{DY}$ is the value of the Z/$γ^*$ mass measured in units of GeV/$c^2$. This linear dependence is observed for the first time in this analysis. It may be exploited to model the effect of ISR and constrain its impact in other processes. △ Less

Abstract: We report on a search for a spin-zero non-standard-model particle in proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at a center-of-mass-energy of 1.96 TeV. This particle, the $φ$ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified… ▽ More We report on a search for a spin-zero non-standard-model particle in proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at a center-of-mass-energy of 1.96 TeV. This particle, the $φ$ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified as initiated by bottom quarks and corresponds to $5.4~\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. In each event, the invariant mass of the two most energetic jets is studied by looking for deviations from the multijet background, which is modeled using data. No evidence is found for such particle. Exclusion upper limits ranging from 20 to 2 pb are set for the product of production cross sections times branching fraction for hypothetical $φ$ boson with mass between 100 and 300 GeV/$c^2$. Search for standard-model Z and Higgs bosons decaying into a bottom-antibottom quark pair in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV

This data set, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~\rm{fb}^{-1}$, is used to measure the $Z$-boson production cross section times branching ratio into $b\bar{b}$. The number of $Z\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ events is determined by fitting the dijet-mass distribution while constraining the dominant $b$-jet background, originating from QCD multijet events, with data. The result, $σ(p\bar{p} \rightarrow Z) \times \mathcal{B}(Z \rightarrow b\bar{b})= 1.11\pm 0.08(\text{stat}) \pm 0.14(\text{syst})~\text{nb}$, is the most precise measurement of this process, and is consistent with the standard-model prediction. The data set is also used to search for Higgs-boson production. No significant signal is expected in our data and the first upper limit on the cross section for the inclusive $p\bar p \rightarrow H\rightarrow b\bar b$ process at $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV is set, corresponding to 33 times the expected standard-model cross section, or $σ= 40.6$ pb, at the 95\% confidence level. △ Less

The scientific potential of CTA is extremely broad: from understanding the role of relativistic cosmic particles to the search for dark matter. CTA is an explorer of the extreme universe, probing environments from the immediate neighbourhood of black holes to cosmic voids on the largest scales. Covering a huge range in photon energy from 20 GeV to 300 TeV, CTA will improve on all aspects of performance with respect to current instruments. The observatory will operate arrays on sites in both hemispheres to provide full sky coverage and will hence maximize the potential for the rarest phenomena such as very nearby supernovae, gamma-ray bursts or gravitational wave transients. With 99 telescopes on the southern site and 19 telescopes on the northern site, flexible operation will be possible, with sub-arrays available for specific tasks. CTA will have important synergies with many of the new generation of major astronomical and astroparticle observatories. Multi-wavelength and multi-messenger approaches combining CTA data with those from other instruments will lead to a deeper understanding of the broad-band non-thermal properties of target sources. The CTA Observatory will be operated as an open, proposal-driven observatory, with all data available on a public archive after a pre-defined proprietary period. Scientists from institutions worldwide have combined together to form the CTA Consortium. This Consortium has prepared a proposal for a Core Programme of highly motivated observations. We use $D^{+} \to K^-π^+π^+$ decays fully reconstructed in the central rapidity region $|y|<1$ with transverse momentum down to 1.5 GeV/$c$, a range previously unexplored in $p\bar{p}$ collisions. Inelastic $p\bar{p}$-scattering events are selected online using minimally-biasing requirements followed by an optimized offline selection. The $K^-π^+π^+$ mass distribution is used to identify the $D^+$ signal, and the $D^+$ transverse impact-parameter distribution is used to separate prompt production, occurring directly in the hard scattering process, from secondary production from $b$-hadron decays. We obtain a prompt $D^+$ signal of 2950 candidates corresponding to a total cross section $σ(D^+, 1.5 < p_T < 14.5~\mbox{GeV/}c, |y|<1) = 71.9 \pm 6.8 (\mbox{stat}) \pm 9.3 (\mbox{syst})~μ$b. While the measured cross sections are consistent with theoretical estimates in each $p_T$ bin, the shape of the observed $p_T$ spectrum is softer than the expectation from quantum chromodynamics. The results are unique in $p\bar{p}$ collisions and can improve the shape and uncertainties of future predictions. △ Less

An analysis of the dijet mass spectrum provides $3.7σ$ evidence of the summed production processes of either {\it WW} or {\it WZ} bosons with a measured total cross section of $σ_{WW+WZ} = 13.7\pm 3.9$~pb. Independent measurements of the {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections are allowed by the different heavy-flavor decay-patterns of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons and by the analysis of secondary-decay vertices reconstructed within heavy-flavor jets. The productions of {\it WW} and of {\it WZ} dibosons are independently seen with significances of $2.9σ$ and $2.1σ$, respectively, with total cross sections of $σ_{WW}= 9.4\pm 4.2$~pb and $σ_{WZ}=3.7^{+2.5}_{-2.2}$~pb. Measurement of $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$ using $e^+e^-$ pairs from $γ^*/Z$ bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV

Abstract: At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow e^+e^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the $e^-$ as a function of the $e^+e^-$-pair mass is used to obtain $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$, the effective leptonic determination of the… ▽ More At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow e^+e^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the $e^-$ as a function of the $e^+e^-$-pair mass is used to obtain $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$, the effective leptonic determination of the electroweak-mixing parameter $\sin^2θ_W$. The measurement sample, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), corresponds to 9.4~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV, and is the full CDF Run II data set. The value of $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$ is found to be $0.23248 \pm 0.00053$. The combination with the previous CDF measurement based on $μ^+μ^-$ pairs yields $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff} = 0.23221 \pm 0.00046$. This result, when interpreted within the specified context of the standard model assuming $\sin^2 θ_W = 1 - M_W^2/M_Z^2$ and that the $W$- and $Z$-boson masses are on-shell, yields $\sin^2θ_W = 0.22400 \pm 0.00045$, or equivalently a $W$-boson mass of $80.328 \pm 0.024 \;{\rm GeV}/c^2$. △ Less

The asymmetry is characterized by the rapidity difference between top quarks and antiquarks ($Δy$), and measured in the final state with two charged leptons (electrons and muons). The inclusive asymmetry, corrected to the entire phase space at parton level, is measured to be $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}} = 0.12 \pm 0.13$, consistent with the expectations from the standard-model (SM) and previous CDF results in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combination of the CDF measurements of the inclusive $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}$ in both final states yields $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}=0.160\pm0.045$, which is consistent with the SM predictions. We also measure the differential asymmetry as a function of $Δy$. A linear fit to $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$, assuming zero asymmetry at $Δy=0$, yields a slope of $α=0.14\pm0.15$, consistent with the SM prediction and the previous CDF determination in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combined slope of $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$ in the two final states is $α=0.227\pm0.057$, which is $2.0σ$ larger than the SM prediction. △ Less

Using a data sample corresponding to $9.7\, {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of ^Mproton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.96\rm~ TeV$ produced by the Fermilab Tevatron, we reconstruct $V+D^{*+}$ samples with the CDF~II detector. The $D^{*+}$ is fully reconstructed in the $D^{*}(2010)^+ \rightarrow D^{0}(\to K^-π^+)π^+$ decay mode. This technique is sensitive to the associated production of vector boson plus charm or bottom mesons. We measure the ratio of production cross sections $σ(W+D^{*})/σ(W)$ = $[1.75\pm 0.13 {\rm (stat)}\pm 0.09 {\rm (syst)}]\% $ and $σ(Z+D^{*})/σ(Z)$ = $[1.5\pm 0.4 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.2 {\rm (syst)}]\% $ and perform a differential measurement of $dσ(W+D^{*})/dp_T(D^{*})$. Event properties are utilized to determine the fraction of $V+D^{*}(2010)^+$ events originating from different production processes. Abstract: Angular correlations in $B^+\to X(3872) K^+$ decays, with $X(3872)\to ρ^0 J/ψ$, $ρ^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the $J^{PC}$ value of the $X(3872)$ meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time… ▽ More Angular correlations in $B^+\to X(3872) K^+$ decays, with $X(3872)\to ρ^0 J/ψ$, $ρ^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the $J^{PC}$ value of the $X(3872)$ meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. Abstract: We report on a search for charged massive resonances decaying to top ($t$) and bottom ($b$) quarks in the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV collected by the CDF~II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.5 $fb^{-1}$. No significant excess above the standard model (SM) background prediction is observed. We set 95% Bayesian credibility mass-dependent upper limits on the heavy charged particle production cross section times branching ratio to $t b$. Using a SM extension with a $W^{\prime}$ and left-right-symmetric couplings as a benchmark model, we constrain the $W^{\prime}$ mass and couplings in the 300 to 900 GeV/$c^2$ range. We measure $A_Γ(K^+K^-) = (-0.19 \pm 0.15 (stat) \pm 0.04 (syst))\%$ and $A_Γ(π^+π^-)= (-0.01 \pm 0.18 (stat) \pm 0.03 (syst))\%$. The uncertainties quoted are, in order, statistical, systematic, and that on the ratio of branching fractions of the $η_c (1S)$ and $J/ψ$ decays to the $p \bar{p}$ final state. In addition, the inclusive branching fraction of $b$-hadron decays into $η_c (1S)$ mesons is measured, for the first time, to be $B ( b \rightarrow η_c X ) = (4.88 \pm 0.64 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.67 _{B}) \times 10^{-3}$, where the third uncertainty includes also the uncertainty on the $J/ψ$ inclusive branching fraction from $b$-hadron decays. The difference between the $J/ψ$ and $η_c (1S)$ meson masses is determined to be $114.7 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.1$ MeV/c$^2$. △ Less

The inclusive $C\!P$ asymmetries of these modes are measu… ▽ More The charmless three-body decay modes $B^{\pm} \rightarrow K^{\pm} π^{+} π^{-}$, $B^{\pm} \rightarrow K^{\pm} K^{+} K^{-}$, $B^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{\pm} K^{+} K^{-}$ and $B^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{\pm} π^{+} π^{-}$ are reconstructed using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0\;$\mbox{\,fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector. The inclusive $C\!P$ asymmetries of these modes are measured to be $$ A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow K^{\pm} π^{+} π^{-})= +0.025 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.007 \\ A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow K^{\pm} K^{+} K^{-}) = -0.036 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.007 \\ A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{\pm} π^{+} π^{-})= +0.058 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.007 \\ A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{\pm} K^{+} K^{-})= -0.123 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.012 \pm 0.007 $$ %% where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the $C\!P$ asymmetry of the $B^{\pm} \rightarrow J/ψK^{\pm}$ reference mode. Determination of gamma and -2beta_s from charmless two-body decays of beauty mesons

Abstract: Using the latest LHCb measurements of time-dependent CP violation in the B^0_s -> K^+K^- decay, a U-spin relation between the decay amplitudes of B^0_s -> K^+K^- and B^0 -> π^+π^- decay processes allows constraints to be placed on the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle and on the B^0_s mixing phase -2β_s. Cross-section ratios and differential distributions as functions of the muon pseudorapidity are also presented. The ratio of $W^{+}$ to $W^{-}$ cross-sections in the same fiducial kinematic region is determined to be $$\frac{σ_{W^{+} \to μ^{+}ν}}{σ_{W^{-} \to μ^{-}\overlineν}} = 1.274 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.009,$$ where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Measurement of the CKM angle γusing B^\pm --> D K^\pm with D-->K_Sπ^+π^-, K_SK^+K^- decays

Abstract: A binned Dalitz plot analysis of $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ decays, with $D \to K_S π^+π^-$ and $D \to K_S K^+ K^-$, is performed to measure the \CP-violating observables $x_{\pm}$ and $y_{\pm}$, which are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle $γ$. The analysis exploits a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0\invfb collected by the LHCb experiment. Measurements from CLEO-c of the variation of the strong-interaction phase of the $D$ decay over the Dalitz plot are used as inputs. The values of the parameters are found to be $x_+ = (-7.7 \pm 2.4 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-2}$, $x_- = (2.5 \pm 2.5 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-2}$, $y_+ = (-2.2 \pm 2.5 \pm 0.4 \pm 1.0)\times 10^{-2}$, and $y_- = (7.5 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.4) \times 10^{-2}$. The first, second, and third uncertainties are the statistical, the experimental systematic, and that associated with the precision of the strong-phase parameters. These are the most precise measurements of these observables and correspond to $γ= (62^{\,+15}_{\,-14})^\circ$, with a second solution at $γ\to γ+ 180^\circ$, and $r_B = 0.080^{+ 0.019}_{-0.021}$, where $r_B$ is the ratio between the suppressed and favoured $B$ decay amplitudes. △ Less

Abstract: The determination of track reconstruction efficiencies at LHCb using $J/ψ\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays is presented. First observation of a baryonic $B_c^+$ decay

Abstract: A baryonic decay of the $B_c^+$ meson, $B_c^+\to J/ψp\overline{p}π^+$, is observed for the first time, with a significance of $7.3$ standard deviations, in $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0$ fb$^{-1}$ taken at center-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8$ $\mathrm{TeV}$. Abstract: An analysis of B0->D K*0 decays is presented, where D represents an admixture of D0 and D0b mesons reconstructed in four separate final states: K-pi+, pi-K+, K+K- and pi+pi-. This is the first observation of a heavy flavoured spin-3 resonance, and the first time that any spin-3 particle has been seen to be produced in $B$ decays. We find the CP violating observables $C_f=0.53\pm0.25\pm0.04$, $A^{ΔΓ}_f=0.37\pm0.42\pm0.20$, $A^{ΔΓ}_{\bar{f}}=0.20\pm0.41\pm0.20$, $S_f=-1.09\pm0.33\pm0.08$, $S_{\bar{f}}=-0.36\pm0.34\pm0.08$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Using these observables together with a recent measurement of the $B^0_s$ mixing phase $-2β_s$ leads to the first extraction of the CKM angle $γ$ from $B^0_s \rightarrow D^{\mp}_s K^{\pm}$ decays, finding $γ$ = (115$_{-43}^{+28}$)$^\circ$ modulo 180$^\circ$ at 68% CL, where the error contains both statistical and systematic uncertainties. △ Less

Observation of charmonium pairs produced exclusively in $pp$ collisions

Abstract: A search is performed for the central exclusive production of pairs of charmonia produced in proton-proton collisions. Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3{\rm\ fb}^{-1}$ collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, $J/ψJ/ψ$ and $J/ψψ(2S)$ pairs are observed, which have been produced in the absence of any other activity inside the LHCb acceptance that is sensitive to… ▽ More A search is performed for the central exclusive production of pairs of charmonia produced in proton-proton collisions. Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3{\rm\ fb}^{-1}$ collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, $J/ψJ/ψ$ and $J/ψψ(2S)$ pairs are observed, which have been produced in the absence of any other activity inside the LHCb acceptance that is sensitive to charged particles in the pseudorapidity ranges $(-3.5,-1.5)$ and $(1.5,5.0)$. Searches are also performed for pairs of P-wave charmonia and limits are set on their production. The cross-sections for these processes, where the dimeson system has a rapidity between 2.0 and 4.5, are measured to be $$ \begin{array}{rl} σ^{J/ψJ/ψ} &= 58\pm10{(\rm stat)} \pm 6{(\rm syst)} {\rm\ pb} , \\ σ^{J/ψψ(2S)} &= 63 ^{+27}_{-18}{(\rm stat)}\pm 10{(\rm syst)} {\rm\ pb} , \\ σ^{ψ(2S)ψ(2S)} &< 237 {\rm\ pb}, \\ σ^{χ_{c0}χ_{c0}} &< 69 {\rm\ nb}, \\ σ^{χ_{c1}χ_{c1}} &< 45 {\rm\ pb}, \\ σ^{χ_{c2}χ_{c2}} &< 141 {\rm\ pb}, \\ \end{array} $$ where the upper limits are set at the 90% confidence level.
