We investigate a two-parameter extension of the $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM model by allowing variations in the effective number of neutrino species $N_{\rm eff}$ and their total mass $\sum m_ν$. Our motivation is twofold: (i) to examine whether $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM retains its success in fitting the data and addressing major cosmological tensions, without suggesting a need for a deviation from the standard model of particle physics, and (ii) to determine whether the data indicate new physics that could potentially address cosmological tensions, either in the post-recombination universe through the late-time mirror AdS-dS transition, or in the pre-recombination universe through modifications in the standard values of $N_{\rm eff}$ and $\sum m_ν$, or both. Within the extended $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM model, referred to as $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM+$N_{\rm eff}$+$\sum m_{\rm ν}$, we find no significant tension when considering the Planck-alone analysis. We observe that incorporating BAO data limits the further success of the $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM extension. However, the weakly model-dependent BAOtr data, along with Planck and Planck+PP\&SH0ES, favor $H_0\sim 73\,{\rm km\, s^{-1}\, Mpc^{-1}}$. In cases where BAOtr dataset is used, the mirror AdS-dS transition is very effective in providing enhanced $H_0$ values, and thus the model requires no significant deviation from the standard value of $N_{\rm eff} = 3.044$. Both the $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions are effectively addressed, with some compromise in the case of the Planck+BAO dataset. Finally, the upper bounds obtained on $\sum m_ν\lesssim 0.5$~eV are fully compatible with neutrino oscillation experiments. Our findings provide evidence that late-time physics beyond $Λ$CDM, such as $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM, without altering the standard pre-recombination universe, can suffice to alleviate the major cosmological tensions.

We consider the problem of computing semi-classical Rényi entropies of CFT on AdS$_2$ backgrounds in JT gravity with nongravitating baths, for general replica number $n$. Away from the $n\to 1$ limit, the backreaction of the CFT twist fields on the geometry is nontrivial. For one twist field insertion and general $n$, we show that the quantum extremal surface (QES) condition involves extremisation of the generalised modular entropy, consistent with Dong's generalisation of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for general $n$. For multiple QES we describe replica wormhole geometries using the theory of Fuchsian uniformisation, explicitly working out the analytically tractable case of the $n=2$ double trumpet wormhole geometry. We determine the off-shell dependence of the gravitational action on the QES locations and boundary map. In a factorisation limit, corresponding to late times, we are able to relate this action functional to area terms given by the value of the JT dilaton at the (off-shell) QES locations, with computable corrections. Applied to the two-sided eternal black hole, we find the $n$-dependent Page times for Rényi enropies in the high temperature limit.

The idea of a rapid sign-switching cosmological constant (mirror AdS-dS transition) in the late universe at $z\sim1.7$, known as the $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM model, has significantly improved the fit to observational data and provides a promising scenario for alleviating major cosmological tensions, such as the $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions. However, in the absence of a fully predictive model, implementing this fit required conjecturing that the dynamics of the linear perturbations are governed by general relativity. Recent work embedding the $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM model with the Lagrangian of a type-II minimally modified gravity known as VCDM has propelled $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM to a fully predictive model, removing the uncertainty related to the aforementioned assumption; we call this new model $Λ_{\rm s}$VCDM. In this work, we demonstrate that not only does $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM fit the data better than the standard $Λ$CDM model, but the new model, $Λ_{\rm s}$VCDM, performs even better in alleviating cosmological tensions while also providing a better fit to the data, including CMB, BAO, SNe Ia, and Cosmic Shear measurements. Our findings highlight the $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM framework, particularly the $Λ_{\rm s}$VCDM model, as a compelling alternative to the standard $Λ$CDM model, especially by successfully alleviating the $H_0$ tension. Additionally, these models predict higher values for $σ_8$, indicating enhanced structuring, albeit with lower present-day matter density parameter values and consequently reduced $S_8$ values, alleviating the $S_8$ tension as well. This demonstrates that the data are well fit by a combination of background and linear perturbations, both having dynamics differing from those of $Λ$CDM. This paves the way for further exploration of new ways for embedding the sign-switching cosmological constant into other models.

Quantum field theory (QFT) in Rindler spacetime is a gateway to understanding unitarity and information loss paradoxes in curved spacetime. Rindler coordinates map Minkowski spacetime onto regions with horizons, effectively dividing accelerated observers into causally disconnected sectors. Employing standard quantum field theory techniques and Bogoliubov transformations between Minkowski and Rindler coordinates yields entanglement between states across these causally separated regions of spacetime. This results in a breakdown of unitarity, implying that information regarding the entangled partner may be irretrievably lost beyond the Rindler horizon. As a consequence, one has a situation of pure states evolving into mixed states. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework for comprehending this phenomenon using a recently proposed formulation of direct-sum quantum field theory (DQFT), which is grounded in superselection rules formulated by the parity and time reversal ($\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$) symmetry of Minkowski spacetime. In the context of DQFT applied to Rindler spacetime, we demonstrate that each Rindler observer can, in principle, access pure states within the horizon, thereby restoring unitarity. However, our analysis also reveals the emergence of a thermal spectrum of Unruh radiation. This prompts a reevaluation of entanglement in Rindler spacetime, where we propose a novel perspective on how Rindler observers may reconstruct complementary information beyond the horizon. Furthermore, we revisit the implications of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem within the framework of DQFT. Lastly, we underscore how our findings contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at elucidating the role of unitarity in quantum field theory within the context of de Sitter and black hole spacetimes.

The fundamental process of detecting and examining the polarization modes of gravitational waves plays a pivotal role in enhancing our grasp on the precise mechanisms behind their generation. A thorough investigation is essential for delving deeper into the essence of gravitational waves and rigorously evaluating and validating the range of modified gravity theories. In this line of interest, a general description of black holes in theories beyond general relativity can serve a meaningful purpose where distinct deviation parameters can be mapped to solutions representing distinct theories. Employing a refined version of the deformed Kerr geometry, which is free from pathological behaviours such as unphysical divergences in the metric, we explore an extreme mass-ratio inspiral system, wherein a stellar-mass object perturbs a supermassive black hole. We compute the effects of deformation parameters on gravitational wave fluxes, orbital evolution and phase dynamics with leading order post-Newtonian corrections. With the waveform analysis, we assess the plausibility of detecting deviations from general relativity through observations facilitated by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), simultaneously constraining the extent of these deviations. Therefore, this analysis provides an understanding while highlighting the essential role of observations in advancing gravitational phenomena beyond general relativity.

Interactions between the light field and the adiabatic sector contribute to mixed adiabatic-isocurvature non-Gaussianity (NG). We interpret our results in the context of the QCD axion and illustrate how the proposed NG searches can improve upon the existing searches for isocurvature power spectrum and bispectrum.

Non-adiabatic production of massive particles is a generic feature of many inflationary mechanisms. If sufficiently massive, these particles can leave features in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) that are not well-captured by traditional correlation function analyses. We consider a scenario in which particle production occurs only in a narrow time-interval during inflation, eventually leading to CMB hot- or coldspots with characteristic shapes and sizes. Searching for such features in CMB data is analogous to searching for late-Universe hot- or coldspots, such as those due to the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. Exploiting this data-analysis parallel, we perform a search for particle-production hotspots in the Planck PR4 temperature dataset, which we implement via a matched-filter analysis. Our pipeline is validated on synthetic observations and found to yield unbiased constraints on sufficiently large hotspots across $\approx 60\%$ of the sky. After removing point sources and tSZ clusters, we find no evidence for new physics and place novel bounds on the coupling between the inflaton and massive particles. These bounds are strongest for larger hotspots, produced early in inflation, whilst sensitivity to smaller hotspots is limited by noise and beam effects. Through such methods we can constrain particles with masses $\mathcal{O}(100)$ times larger than the inflationary Hubble scale, which represents possibly the highest energies ever directly probed with observational data.

We have investigated the characteristics of shadows cast by the Kerr black hole in the presence of plasma and compared them to those of a rotating wormhole in a uniform plasma space-time for an observer at infinity. Interestingly, for the same uniform plasma density, the apparent shadow size of the rotating wormhole is always greater than that of the Kerr black hole. To further distinguish the two compact objects we studied the deflection angle and did a comparative study in the presence of the uniform and non-uniform plasma profiles. The goal of this whole exercise is to deepen our understanding of the observational phenomena of these astrophysical objects. The analysis reveals the importance of specific plasma distribution profiles, the impact of plasma on the shadow diameter, and the behavior of deflection angles in different plasma scenarios. We have calculated constraints on the plasma parameters by considering observational data and employing analytical formulations. Our work therefore provides valuable insights into the behavior of light rays near compact objects in plasma space-time.

We have successfully integrated $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM, a promising model for alleviating cosmological tensions, into a theoretical framework by endowing it with a specific Lagrangian from the VCDM model, a type-II minimally modified gravity. In this theory, we demonstrate that an auxiliary scalar field with a linear potential induces an effective cosmological constant, enabling the realization of an abrupt mirror AdS-dS transition in the late universe through a piecewise linear potential. To eliminate the sudden singularity in this setup and ensure stable transitions, we smooth out this potential. Realized within the VCDM theory, the $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM model facilitates two types of rapid smooth mirror AdS-dS transitions: (i) the agitated transition, associated with a smooth jump in the potential, where $Λ_{\rm s}$, and consequently $H$, exhibits a bump around the transition's midpoint; and (ii) the quiescent transition, associated with a smooth change in the slope of the potential, where $Λ_{\rm s}$ transitions gracefully. These transitions are likely to leave distinct imprints on the background and perturbation dynamics, potentially allowing the observational data to distinguish between them. This novel theoretical framework propels $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM into a fully predictive model capable of exploring the evolution of the Universe including the late-time AdS-dS transition epoch, and extends the applicability of the model. We believe further research is crucial in establishing $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM as a leading candidate or guide for a new concordance cosmological model.

In this paper, we present compelling evidence for the parity asymmetry (a discrete symmetry that is separate from isotropy) in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) map, measured through two-point temperature correlations. This parity asymmetric CMB challenges our understanding of the quantum physics of the early Universe rather than LCDM ($Λ$ Cold-Dark-Matter). We commence by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the Planck CMB, focusing on the distribution of power in low-multipoles and temperature anticorrelations at parity conjugate points in position space. We find tension with the near scale-invariant power-law power spectrum of Standard Inflation (SI), with p-values of the order $\mathcal{O}\left( 10^{-4}-10^{-3} \right)$. Alternatively, we explore the framework of direct-sum inflation (DSI), where a quantum fluctuation arises as a direct-sum of two components evolving forward and backward in time at parity conjugate points in physical space. We found that DSI is consistent with data on parity asymmetry, the absence of power at $θ>60^{\circ}$, and power suppression at low-even-multipoles, which are major data anomalies in the SI. Furthermore, we discover that the parameters characterizing the hemispherical power asymmetry anomaly become statistically insignificant when the large SI quadrupole amplitude is reduced to align with the data. DSI explains this low quadrupole with a p-value of $3.5\%$, 39 times higher than SI. Combining statistics from parameters measuring parity and low-$\ell$ angular power spectrum, we find that DSI is 50-650 times more probable than SI. In summary, our investigation suggests that CMB temperature fluctuations exhibit homogeneity and isotropy but parity-asymmetric consistent with predictions of DSI. This observation provides tantalizing evidence for the quantum mechanical nature of gravity.

The self interaction potential is taken to be either quartic, $λφ^4/4!$, or quartic plus cubic, $λφ^4/4!+βφ^3/3!$ ($λ\,{\ensuremath >}\,0$). We compute the four and three point vertex functions up to two loop. The purely local or partly local part of these renormalised loop corrected vertex functions grow unboundedly after sufficient number of de Sitter $e$-foldings, due to the appearances of secular logarithms. We focus on the purely local part of the vertex functions and attempt a resummation of them in terms of the dynamically generated mass of the scalar field at late times. It turns out that the resummed, non-perturbative effective vertex functions have values less than that of the tree level. The variation of these vertex functions are investigated with respect to the tree level couplings numerically. Since neither the secular effect, nor the dynamical generation of field mass is possible in the Minkowski spacetime, the above phenomenon has no flat spacetime analogue.

In this work, we derive for the first time observational constraints on the extended Minimal Theory of Massive Gravity (eMTMG) framework in light of Planck-CMB data, geometrical measurements from Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO), Type Ia supernovae from the recent Pantheon+ samples, and also using the auto and cross-correlations cosmic shear measurements from KIDS-1000 survey. Given the great freedom of dynamics choice for the theory, we consider an observationally motivated subclass in which the background evolution of the Universe goes through a transition from a (positive or negative) value of the effective cosmological constant to another value. From the statistical point of view, we did not find evidence of such a transition, i.e. deviation from the standard $Λ$CDM behavior, and from the joint analysis using Planck + BAO + Pantheon+ data, we constrain the graviton mass to $< 6.6 \times 10^{-34}$ eV at 95% CL. We use KIDS-1000 survey data to constrain the evolution of the scalar perturbations of the model and its limits for the growth of structure predicted by the eMTMG scenario. In this case, we find small evidence at 95% CL for a non-zero graviton mass. We interpret and discuss these results in light of the current tension on the $S_8$ parameter. We conclude that, within the subclass considered, the current data are only able to impose upper bounds on the eMTMG dynamics. Given its potentialities beyond the subclass, eMTMG can be classified as a good candidate for modified gravity, serving as a framework in which observational data can effectively constrain (or confirm) the graviton mass and deviations from the standard $Λ$CDM behavior.

In recent years, the formation of primordial black holes (PBH) in the early universe inflationary cosmology has garnered significant attention. One plausible scenario for primordial black hole (PBH) formation arises during the preheating stage following inflation. Notably, this scenario does not necessitate any ad-hoc fine-tuning of the scalar field potential. This paper focuses on the growth of primordial density perturbation and the consequent possibility of PBH formation in the preheating stage of the Starobinsky model for inflation. The typical mechanism for PBH formation during preheating is based on the collapse of primordial fluctuations that become super-horizon during inflation (type I) and re-enter the particle horizon in the different phases of cosmic expansion. In this work, we show that there exists a certain range of modes that remain in the sub-horizon (not exited) during inflation (type II modes) but evolve identically to type I modes if they fall into the instability band, leading to large density perturbation above the threshold and can potentially also contribute to the PBH formation. We detail the conditions determining the possible collapse of type I and/or type II modes whose wavelengths are larger than the Jeans length we derive from the effective sound speed of scalar field fluctuations. Since the preheating stage is an 'inflaton' (approximately) matter-dominated phase, we follow the framework of the critical collapse of fluctuations and compute the mass fraction using the well-known Press-Schechter and the Khlopov-Polnarev formalisms, and compare the two. Finally, we comment on the implications of our study for the investigations concerned with primordial accretion and consequent PBH contribution to the dark matter.

Most gravitational wave (GW) events observed by the LIGO and Virgo detectors are consistent with mergers of binary black holes (BBHs) on quasi-circular orbits. However, some events are also consistent with non-zero orbital eccentricity, which can indicate that the binary formed via dynamical interactions. Active GW search pipelines using quasi-circular waveform templates are inefficient for detecting eccentric mergers. Also, analysing eccentric GW signals with waveform models neglecting eccentricity can lead to biases in the recovered parameters. We explore the detectability and characterisation of eccentric signals when searches and analyses rely on quasi-circular waveform models. We find that for a reference eccentric population, the fraction of events having fitting factor (FF) $< 0.95$ can be up to $\approx 2.2\%$ compared to $\approx 0.4\%$ for the baseline population. This leads to the loss in signal recovery fraction for up to $6\%$ for parameter space with non-negligible eccentricity ($e_{10} > 0.01$) and high mass ratio ($q > 3$). We perform parameter estimation (PE) for non-spinning and aligned-spin eccentric GW injections from BBHs with a total mass $M=35 M_\odot$, based on numerical relativity simulations and an EOB based inspiral-merger-ringdown model (TEOBResumS). We recover these injections using both quasi-circular and eccentric waveform models. For cases with $e_{20} \sim 0.1$, quasi-circular models fail to estimate chirp mass within the 90% credible interval accurately. Further, for these low-mass injections, spin-induced precession does not mimic eccentricity. For injections of $e_{20}\sim 0.1$, PE conducted with an inspiral-only eccentric waveform model correctly characterises the injected signal to within 90% confidence, and recovers the injected eccentricities, suggesting that such models are sufficient for characterisation of low-mass eccentric BBH. In this work, we have studied the behavior of null geodesics within a rotating wormhole space-time in non-magnetized pressure-less plasma. By focusing on the dispersion relation of the plasma and disregarding its direct gravitational effects, we examine how light rays traverse in the mentioned space-time. A key highlight of the work is the necessity of a specific plasma distribution profile to establish a generalized Carter's constant, shedding light on the importance of this parameter. Furthermore, we have derived analytical formulas to distinguish the shadow boundary across various plasma profiles, uncovering a fascinating trend of diminishing shadow size as plasma density increases. Intriguingly, certain limits of the plasma parameters result in the complete disappearance of the shadow. When calculating the deflection angle by a wormhole in plasma space-time, we observe a distinct pattern: the angle decreases as the plasma parameter rises in non-homogeneous plasma space-time, diverging from the behavior observed in homogeneous plasma space-time. Also, leveraging observational data from M$87^{\ast}$, we establish constraints on the throat radius. Furthermore, minimum shadow diameters provide valuable constraints for the radial and latitudinal plasma parameters.

Our analysis shows that, predicting $z_\dagger\approx1.7$, $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM simultaneously addresses the major cosmological tensions of the standard $Λ$CDM model, viz., the Hubble constant $H_0$, the Type Ia Supernovae absolute magnitude $M_{\rm B}$, and the growth parameter $S_8$ tensions, along with other less significant tensions such as the BAO Lyman-$α$ discrepancy.

Identifying the anisotropies in a cosmologically sourced stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) would be of significance in shedding light on the nature of primordial inhomogeneities. For example, if SGWB carries isocurvature fluctuations, it would provide evidence for a multi-field inflationary origin of these inhomogeneities. However, this is challenging in practice due to finite detector sensitivity and also the presence of the astrophysical foregrounds that can compete with the cosmological signal. In this work, we explore the prospects for measuring cosmological SGWB anisotropies in the presence of an astrophysical counterpart and detector noise. To illustrate the main idea, we perform a Fisher analysis using a well-motivated cosmological SGWB template corresponding to a first order phase transition, and an astrophysical SGWB template corresponding to extra-galactic binary mergers, and compute the uncertainty with which various parameters characterizing the isotropic and anisotropic components can be extracted. We also discuss some subtleties and caveats involving shot noise in the astrophysical foreground. Overall, we show that upcoming experiments, e.g., LISA, Taiji, Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer, and BBO, can all be effective in discovering plausible anisotropic cosmological SGWBs.

We argue that the origin of unitarity violation and information loss paradox in our understanding of black holes (BH) lies in the standard way of doing quantum field theory in curved space-time (QFTCS), which is heavily biased on intuition borrowed from classical General Relativity. In this paper, with the quantum first approach, we formulate a so-called direct-sum QFT (DQFT) in BH space-time based on a novel formulation of discrete space-time transformations in gravity that potentially restores unitarity. By invoking the quantum effects associated with the gravitational backreaction, we show that the Hawking quanta emerging outside of the Schwarzschild radius ($r_S=2GM$) cannot be independent of the quanta that continue to be inside $r_S$. This enables the information to be carried by Hawking quanta, but in the BH DQFT formalism, we do not get any firewalls. Furthermore, DQFT leads to the BH evaporation involving only pure states. This means the quantum mechanical effects at the BH horizon produce two components of a maximally entangled pure state in superselection sector Hilbert spaces. This construction enables pure states to evolve into pure states, restoring unitarity and observer complementarity. Finally, we discuss how our framework leaves important clues for formulating a scattering matrix and probing the nature of quantum gravity.

We test the possibility that the black holes (BHs) detected by LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) may be cosmologically coupled and grow in mass proportionally to the cosmological scale factor to some power $k$, which may also act as the dark energy source if $k\approx 3$. This approach was proposed as an extension of Kerr BHs embedded in cosmological backgrounds and possibly without singularities or horizons. In our analysis, we develop and apply two methods to test these cosmologically coupled BHs (CCBHs) either with or without connection to dark energy. We consider different scenarios for the time between the binary BH formation and its merger, and we find that the standard log-uniform distribution yields weaker constraints than the CCBH-corrected case. Assuming that the minimum mass of a BH with stellar progenitor is $2M_\odot$, we estimate the probability that at least one BH among the observed ones had an initial mass below this threshold. We obtain these probabilities either directly from the observed data or by assuming the LVK power-law-plus-peak mass distribution. In the latter case we find, at $2σ$ level, that $k < 2.1$ for the standard log-uniform distribution, or $k < 1.1$ for the CCBH-corrected distribution. Slightly weaker bounds are obtained in the direct method. Considering the uncertainties on the nature of CCBHs, we also find that the required minimum CCBH mass value to eliminate the tensions for $k=3$ should be lower than 0.5 $M_\odot$ (again at 2$σ$). Finally, we show that future observations have the potential to decisively confirm these bounds.

We present a novel mechanism for gravitational wave generation in the early Universe. Light spectator scalar fields during inflation can acquire a blue-tilted power spectrum due to stochastic effects. We show that this effect can lead to large curvature perturbations at small scales (induced by the spectator field fluctuations) while maintaining the observed, slightly red-tilted curvature perturbations at large cosmological scales (induced by the inflaton fluctuations). Along with other observational signatures, such as enhanced dark matter substructure, large curvature perturbations can induce a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). The predicted strength of SGWB in our scenario, $Ω_{\rm GW}h^2 \simeq 10^{-20} - 10^{-15}$, can be observed with future detectors, operating between $10^{-5}$ Hz and 10 Hz. We note that, in order to accommodate the newly reported NANOGrav observation, one could consider the same class of spectator models. At the same time, one would need to go beyond the simple benchmark considered here and consider a regime in which a misalignment contribution is also important.

The discovery of gravitational waves and black holes has started a new era of gravitational wave astronomy that allows us to probe the underpinning features of gravity and astrophysics in extreme environments of the universe. In this article, we investigate one such study with an extreme mass-ratio inspiral system where the primary object is a spherically symmetric static black hole immersed in a dark matter halo governed by the Hernquist density distribution. We consider the eccentric equatorial orbital motion of the steller-mass object orbiting around the primary and compute measurable effects. We examine the behaviour of dark matter mass and halo radius in generated gravitational wave fluxes and the evolution of eccentric orbital parameters -- eccentricity and semi-latus rectum. We further provide an estimate of gravitational wave dephasing and find the seminal role of low-frequency detectors in the observational prospects of such an astrophysical environment.

In this chapter we review the recent developments of realizing $R^2$-like inflation in the framework of a most general UV nonlocal extension of Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR). It is a well-motivated robust approach towards quantum gravity. In the past decades, nonlocal gravitational theories which are quadratic in curvature have been understood to be ghost-free and super-renormalizable around maximally symmetric spacetimes. However, in the context of early Universe cosmology we show that one must go beyond the quadratic curvature nonlocal gravity in order to achieve a consistent ghost-free framework of Universe evolution from quasi de Sitter to Minkowski spacetime. In this regard, we discuss a construction of a most general nonlocal gravity action that leads to $R^2$-like inflation and discuss the corresponding observational predictions for the scalar and tensor spectral tilts, tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the primordial non-Gaussianities. We present an analysis of how the nonlocal inflationary cosmology goes beyond the established notions of effective field theories of inflation. Finally, we comment on some open questions and prospects of higher curvature nonlocal gravity on its way of achieving the UV completion.

We describe a new mechanism that gives rise to dissipation during cosmic inflation. In the simplest implementation, the mechanism requires the presence of a massive scalar field with a softly-broken global $U(1)$ symmetry, along with the inflaton field. Particle production in this scenario takes place on parametrically sub-horizon scales, at variance with the case of dissipation into gauge fields. Consequently, the backreaction of the produced particles on the inflationary dynamics can be treated in a \textit{local} manner, allowing us to compute their effects analytically. We determine the parametric dependence of the power spectrum which deviates from the usual slow-roll expression. Non-Gaussianities are always sizeable whenever perturbations are generated by the noise induced by dissipation: $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq} \gtrsim {O}(10)$.

The presence of CMB Hemispherical Asymmetry (HPA) challenges the current understanding of inflationary cosmology which does not generically predict the parity violation in the primordial correlations. In this paper, we shall review the recently proposed resolution to this based on a new formulation of quantizing inflationary fluctuations by focusing on the discrete spacetime transformations in a gravitational context. The predictive power of this formulation is that one can generate a scale dependent HPA in the context of single field inflation for all the primordial modes including scalar and tensor fluctuations without introducing any additional parameters. This result can be seen as an indication of spontaneous breaking of $\mathcal{C}\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry in an expanding Universe, if confirmed by future observations it would be a great leap in the subject of quantum field theory in curved spacetime.

Before we ask what the quantum gravity theory is, it is a legitimate quest to formulate a robust quantum field theory in curved spacetime (QFTCS). Several conceptual problems, especially unitarity loss (pure states evolving into mixed states), have raised concerns over several decades. Unitarity in QFTCS is essential for formulating S-matrix and computing scattering amplitudes in curved spacetime. In this paper, acknowledging the fact that {time} is a parameter in quantum theory, which is different from its status in the context of General Relativity (GR), we start with a "quantum first approach" and propose a new formulation for QFTCS based on the discrete spacetime transformations ($\mathcal{C}\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$) which offer a way to achieve unitarity. Our framework for a QFTCS is built on a refined understanding of standard QFT S-matrix that explicitly reflects the \cpt\, invariance of scattering amplitudes. We rewrite the standard QFT equipped with a direct-sum Fock space structure that is explicitly $\mathcal{C}\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$, invariant. Applying this framework to QFTCS, in the context of de Sitter (dS) spacetime, we elucidate how this approach to quantization complies with unitarity and the observer complementarity principle. We then discuss defining an S-matrix in de Sitter spacetime that is analogous to Minkowski. Furthermore, we comment briefly the implications of our QFTCS approach for quantum gravity.

We construct a holographic map that takes the semi-classical state of an evaporating black hole and its Hawking radiation to a microscopic model that reflects the scrambling dynamics of the black hole. The microscopic model is given by a nested sequence of random unitaries, each one implementing a scrambling time step of the black hole evolution. Differently from other models, energy conservation and the thermal nature of the Hawking radiation are taken into account. We show that the QES formula follows for the entropy of multiple subsets of the radiation and black hole. We further show that a version of entanglement wedge reconstruction can be proved by computing suitable trace norms and quantum fidelities involving the action of a unitary on a subset of Hawking partners. If the Hawking partner is in an island, its unitary can be reconstructed by a unitary on the radiation. We also adopt a similar setup and analyse reconstruction of unitaries acting on an infalling system.

In this work, we use the state-of-the-art BAO+BBN data and the most recent Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) sample namely PantheonPlus, including the Cepheid host distances and covariance from SH0ES samples, to robustly constrain the $f(R)$ gravity framework via two of the most popular $f(R)$ models in literature, namely, the Hu-Sawicki and Starobinsky models. Additionally, we consider how the time variation of the Newton's gravitational constant affects the supernovae distance modulus relation. We find a minor evidence for $f(R)$ gravity under the Hu-Sawicki dynamics from BAO+BBN and BAO+BBN+uncalibrated supernovae joint analysis, but the inclusion of Cepheid host distances, makes the model compatible with GR. Further, we notice tendency of this model to relax the $H_0$ tension. In general, in all the analyses carried out in this study with the late time probes, we find both the $f(R)$ models to be consistent with GR at 95\% CL.

We find that 2D BAO measurements can generate different observational constraints compared to the traditional approach of studying the matter clustering in the 3D BAO measurements. Contrary to the observations for the $Λ$CDM and IDE models when analyzed with Planck-CMB + 3D BAO data, we note that Planck-CMB + 2D BAO data favor high values of the Hubble constant $H_0$. From the joint analysis with Planck-CMB + 2D BAO + Gaussian prior on $H_0$, we find $H_0 = 73.4 \pm 0.88$ km/s/Mpc. We conclude that the $H_0$ tension is solved in the IDE model with strong statistical evidence (more than 3$σ$) for the IDE cosmologies.

Grinberg and Maldacena argued that the one point functions sourced by the Weyl tensor exponentiate in the limit of large scalar masses and they contain information of the black hole geometry behind the horizon. We observe that the one point functions behave identically in this limit for either of the couplings mentioned earlier. We show that in an appropriate large $d$ limit, the one point function for the charged black hole in $AdS_{d+1}$ can be obtained exactly. These black holes in general contain an inner horizon. We show that the one point function exponentiates and contains the information of both the proper time between the outer horizon to the inner horizon as well as the proper length from the inner horizon to the singularity. We also show that Gauss-Bonnet coupling induced one point functions in $AdS_{d+1}$ black holes with hyperbolic horizons behave as anticipated by Grinberg-Maldacena. Finally, we study the one point functions in the background of rotating BTZ black holes induced by the cubic coupling of scalars.

Extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI) is one of the most compelling and captivating binary systems in this direction, with the detection possibility by the future space-based gravitational wave detector. In this article, we consider an EMRI system where the primary or the central object is a spherically symmetric static braneworld black hole that carries a \textit{tidal charge} $Q$. We estimate the effect of the tidal charge on total gravitational wave flux and orbital phase due to a non-spinning secondary inspiralling the primary. In this paper, we compute scalar primordial non-Gaussianities (PNGs) in this theory and effectively demonstrate that higher curvature non-local terms lead to reduced bispectrum $f_{\rm NL}\left( k_1,\,k_2,\,k_3 \right)$ mimicking several classes of scalar field models of inflation known in the literature. We obtain $\vert f_{\rm NL}\vert \sim O(1-10)$ in the equilateral, orthogonal, and squeezed limits and the running of these PNGs measured by the quantity $\vert\frac{d\ln f_{\rm NL}}{d\ln k}\vert\lesssim 1$. Such PNGs are sufficiently large to be measurable by future CMB and Large Scale Structure observations, thus providing a possibility to probe the nature of quantum gravity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the $R^2$-like inflation in non-local modification of gravity brings non-trivial predictions which go beyond the current status of effective field theories (EFTs) of single field, quasi-single field and multiple field inflation. A distinguishable feature of non-local $R^2$-like inflation compared to local EFTs is that we can have running of PNGs at least an order of magnitude higher. In summary, through our generalized non-local $R^2$-like inflation, we obtain a robust geometric framework of inflation that can explain any detection of observable quantities related to scalar PNGs.

Although the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is largely understood to be homogeneous and isotropic, the CMB power presents anomalies that seem to break down parity symmetry at large angular scales. We argue that the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra can be parity asymmetric by considering the existence of two distinct power spectra in the two parity conjugate regions of the CMB sky without introducing any additional parameters. We impose a superselection rule to the vacuum structure for (single field) inflationary quantum fluctuations based on discrete spacetime transformations ($\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$). As a result, we estimate the amplitude of power asymmetry in the scalar and tensor sectors at different scales of $ 10^{-4} {\rm Mpc^{-1}}\lesssim k\lesssim 10^{-3}{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$. We derive predictions of our generalized non-local $R^2$-like inflation and obtain the scalar spectral index $n_s\approx 1-\frac{2}{N}$ and any value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r<0.036$. In this theory, tensor spectral index can be either positive or negative $n_t\lessgtr 0$ and the well-known consistency relation $r = -8n_t$ is violated in a non-trivial way. We also compute running of the tensor spectral index and discuss observational implications to distinguish this model from several classes of scalar field models of inflation. These predictions allow us to probe the nature of quantum gravity in the scope of future CMB and gravitational wave observations. Finally we comment on how the features of generalized non-local $R^2$-like inflation cannot be captured by established notions of the so-called effective field theory of single field inflation and how we must redefine the way we pursue inflationary cosmology.

We consider the massive graviton phenomenological model based on the graviton's dispersion terms included into phase of gravitational wave's waveform. Such model was already considered in many works but it was based on a single leading-order dispersion term only. Here we derive a relation between relativistic gravitons emission and absorption time intervals computed up to ${\cal O}(γ^{-6})$, where $γ$ is the Lorentz factor. Including the dispersion terms into the phase of gravitational wave's waveform results in two non-GR parameters of the $1^{st}$ and the $-2^{nd}$ post-Newtonian orders whose posteriors are used to put a constraint on the graviton's rest mass. We use the TaylorF2 waveform model to analyse the event GW170817 and report the following $95\%$-confidence upper bounds on the graviton's rest mass: $m^{Low\,Spin}_{g}\leq1.305\times10^{-54}$g and $m^{High\,Spin}_{g}\leq2.996\times10^{-54}$g for the high and low spin priors.

The ringdown signal emitted during a binary black hole coalescence can be modeled as a linear superposition of the characteristic damped modes of the remnant black hole that get excited during the merger phase. While checking the consistency of the measured frequencies and dam** times against the Kerr BH spectrum predicted by General Relativity (GR) is a cornerstone of strong-field tests of gravity, the consistency of measured excitation amplitudes and phases have been largely left unexplored. For a nonprecessing, quasi-circular binary black hole merger, we find that GR predicts a narrow region in the space of mode amplitude ratio and phase difference, independently of the spin of the binary components. %
Using this unexpected result, we develop a new null test of strong-field gravity which demands that the measured amplitudes and phases of different ringdown modes should lie within this narrow region predicted by GR. We call this the \emph{amplitude-phase consistency test} and introduce a procedure for performing it using information from the ringdown signal. Lastly, we apply this test to the GW190521 event, using the multimodal ringdown parameters inferred by Capano et al. (2021) \cite{Capano:2021etf}. While ringdown measurements errors for this event are large, we show that GW190521 is consistent with the amplitude-phase consistency test. Our test is particularly well suited for accommodating multiple loud ringdown detections as those expected in the near future, and can be used complementarily to standard black-hole spectroscopy as a proxy for modified gravity, compact objects other than black holes, binary precession and eccentricity.

We observe that the combination of FS power spectrum measurements with the CMB data significantly improves the parametric space of the models compared to the CMB data alone case. We find no evidence for neutrinos properties other than the ones predicted by the standard cosmological theory. Our most robust observational constraints are given by CMB + BOSS analysis. For the generalized extended $Λ$CDM scenario, we find $c^2_{\rm eff}=0.3304^{+0.0064}_{-0.0075}$, $c^2_{\rm vis}=0.301^{+0.037}_{-0.033}$, $ξ_ν < 0.05$, $N_{\rm eff}=2.90 \pm 0.15$ at 68\% CL, with $\sum m_ν < 0.116$ eV at 95\% CL. These are the strongest limits ever reported for these extended $Λ$CDM scenarios.

We study radial oscillations in non-rotating neutron stars by considering the unified equation of states (EoSs), which support the 2 M$_\odot$ star criterion. We solve the Sturm-Liouville problem to compute 20 lowest radial oscillation modes and their eigenfunctions for neutron star modelled with eight selected unified EoSs from distinct Skyrme-Hartree Fock, Relativistic Mean-Field and quarkyonic models. We compare the behavior of the computed eigenfrequency for NS modelled with hadronic to that with quarkyonic EoSs while varying central densities. The lowest order, f-mode frequency varies substantially between the two classes of the of EoS at 1.4 M$_\odot$ but vanishes at their respective maximum masses, consistent with the stability criterion $\partial M/\partialρ_c > 0$. Moreover, we also computed large frequency separation and discovered that higher-order mode frequencies are significantly reduced by incorporating crust in the EoS.

Features in the inflationary landscape can inject extra energies to inflation models and produce on-shell particles with masses much larger than the Hubble scale of inflation. This possibility extends the energy reach of the program of cosmological collider physics, in which signals associated with these particles are generically Boltzmann-suppressed. We study the mechanisms of this classical cosmological collider in two categories of primordial features. In the first category, the primordial feature is classical oscillation, which includes the case of coherent oscillation of a massive field and the case of oscillatory features in the inflationary potential. The second category includes any sharp feature in the inflation model. All these classical features can excite unsuppressed quantum modes of other heavy fields which leave observational signatures in primordial non-Gaussianities, including the information about the particle spectra of these heavy degrees of freedom.

The proposed model is a study of the nature of dark energy through non-extensive Tsallis entropy. The method is based on the Karolyhazy relation which is a combined idea from quantum physics and general relativity. Dark energy is the energy density of quantum fluctuations in space-time. This is the key idea behind proposing agegraphic dark energy (ADE) models here. The parameter $δ$ is used to measure the quantitative distinction from the standard scenario. To look at the cosmological implications of the hypothesized dark energy model, as well as the expansion of the Universe filled with zero pressure matter and the resulting dark energy alternatives, the role of IR cutoff is played by age of the universe. The dynamic behavior of dark energy density parameter is carried out. The expressions for the equation of state parameter and deceleration parameter are obtained. The analysis is performed by taking into account a no flow as well as a flow of energy among the dark matter and dark energy sectors of the universe.

Gravitational memory effect has emerged as a new window and opened up several intriguing avenues in the field of gravitational wave astronomy together with its inter-connection to asymptotic symmetries (AS). The recent developments in this direction have drawn considerable attention from theoretical as well as observational perspectives. It has been shown that such effects can also be recovered near the horizon of black holes which might play a crucial role in understanding the information paradox. With this motivation, we have studied the gravitational memory effect near the horizon of black holes analogous to the one obtained at asymptotic null infinity.
We first study how the AS emerge near the horizon of black holes and how they can be detected via some ideal detectors as some permanent change of configurations (Memory) once GW passes through the setup. The emergence of AS is studied from two different perspectives. First, how AS emerge as soldering freedoms when two black holes are being glued along a common null surface. Secondly, in the form of AS that preserve the asymptotic form of the near horizon metric of a black hole. We have established an analogous form of the displacement memory near the horizon of non-extreme and extreme black holes for both these perspectives. We also discuss the detection prospects of the supertranslation memory or hair. In this direction, other than the memory effect, we have explored the possibility of detecting a supertranslated black hole through standard tests of General Relativity. We propose a scenario in which such a configuration may be distinguished from ordinary black holes by examining the photon trajectories near the horizon. As we know that the gravitational memory has not been detected yet, in this direction, our study might serve as a useful contribution towards investigation of the signatures of AS in the future.

We explore the role of redshift-space galaxy clustering data in constraining non-gravitational interactions between dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM), for which state-of-the-art limits have so far been obtained from late-time background measurements. We use the joint likelihood for pre-reconstruction full-shape (FS) galaxy power spectrum and post-reconstruction Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements from the BOSS DR12 sample, alongside Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from \textit{Planck}: from this dataset combination we infer $H_0=68.02^{+0.49}_{-0.60}\,{\rm km}/{\rm s}/{\rm Mpc}$ and the 2$σ$ lower limit $ξ>-0.12$, among the strongest limits ever reported on the DM-DE coupling strength $ξ$ for the particular model considered. Contrary to what has been observed for the $Λ$CDM model and simple extensions thereof, we find that the CMB+FS combination returns tighter constraints compared to the CMB+BAO one, suggesting that there is valuable additional information contained in the broadband of the power spectrum. We test this finding by running additional CMB-free analyses and removing sound horizon information, and discuss the important role of the equality scale in setting constraints on DM-DE interactions. Our results reinforce the critical role played by redshift-space galaxy clustering measurements in the epoch of precision cosmology, particularly in relation to tests of non-minimal dark sector extensions of the $Λ$CDM model.

With the help of 3G detectors, we will be able to probe large-scale structure (LSS) features such as baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), galaxy bias, etc. We explore the possibility to do precision cosmology, with the 3G GW detectors by measuring the angular BAO scale using localization volumes of compact binary merger events. Through simulations, we show that with a 3G detector network, by probing the angular BAO scale using purely GW observations, we can constrain the Hubble constant for the standard model of cosmology ($Λ$CDM) with $90\%$ credible regions as $H_0 = 59.4^{+ 33.9}_{-17.7} ~\mathrm{km}~\mathrm{s}^{-1}~\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. When combined with BAO measurements from galaxy surveys, we show that it can be used to constrain various models of cosmology such as parametrized models for dark energy equations of state. We also show how cosmological constraints using BAO measurements from GW observations in the 3G era will complement the same from spectroscopic surveys.

The sensitivity of gravitational-waves detectors is characterized by their noise curves which determine the detector's reach and the ability to accurately measure the parameters of astrophysical sources. The detector noise is typically modelled as stationary and Gaussian for many practical purposes. However, physical changes in the state of detectors due to environmental and instrumental factors, including extreme cases where a detector discontinues observing for some time, introduce non-stationarity into the noise. Even slow evolution of the detector sensitivity will affect long duration signals such as binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. Mis-estimation of the noise behavior directly impacts the posterior width of the signal parameters. This becomes an issue for studies which depend on accurate localization volumes such as i) probing cosmological parameters (such as Hubble constant, clustering bias) using cross-correlation methods with galaxies, ii) doing electromagnetic follow-up using localization information from parameter estimation done from pre-merger data. We study the effects of dynamical noise on the parameter estimation of the GW events. We develop a new method to correct dynamical noise by estimating a locally-valid pseudo PSD which is normalized along the time-frequency track of a potential signal. We do simulations by injecting the BNS signal in various scenarios where the detector goes through a period of non-stationarity with reference noise curve of third generation detectors (Cosmic explorer, Einstein telescope). As an example, for a source where mis-modelling of the noise biases the signal-to-noise estimate by even $10\%$, one would expect the estimated localization volume to be either under or over reported by $\sim 30\%$; errors like this, especially in low-latency, could potentially cause follow-up campaigns to miss the true source location.

We explore the possible advantages of extending the $Λ$CDM model by more realistic backgrounds compared to its spatially flat RW spacetime assumption, while preserving the underpinning physics; in particular, by simultaneously allowing non-zero spatial curvature and anisotropic expansion on top of it, viz., the An-$oΛ$CDM model. This is to test whether the latest data support spatial flatness and/or isotropic expansion, and, if not, to explore the roles of spatial curvature and expansion anisotropy (due to its stiff fluid-like behavior) in addressing some of the cosmological tensions. We first present the theoretical background and explicit mathematical construction of An-$oΛ$CDM; combining the simplest anisotropic generalizations of the RW spacetime, viz., the Bianchi type I, V, and IX spacetimes. Then we constrain this model and its particular cases, viz., An-$Λ$CDM, $oΛ$CDM, and $Λ$CDM, by using the data sets from different probes, viz., Planck CMB(+Lens), BAO, SnIa Pantheon, and CC data, and discuss the results. Ultimately, we conclude that, within the setup under consideration, (i) the data confirm the spatial flatness and isotropic expansion, though a very small amount of present-day expansion anisotropy cannot be excluded, e.g., $Ω_{\sigma0}\lesssim10^{-18}$ (95\% C.L.) for An-$Λ$CDM from CMB+Lens, (ii) the introduction of spatial curvature or anisotropic expansion, or both, on top $Λ$CDM does not offer a possible relaxation to the $H_0$ tension, and (iii) the introduction of anisotropic expansion neither affects the closed space prediction from CMB(+Lens) nor does it improve the drastically reduced value of $H_0$ led by the closed space. We discuss why it is important and indispensable to maintain the geometric generalization work program, especially in models that offer solutions to cosmological tensions. [abridged]

We present the fourth Open Gravitational-wave Catalog (4-OGC) of binary neutron star (BNS), binary black hole (BBH) and neutron star-black hole (NSBH) mergers. The catalog includes observations from 2015-2020 covering the first through third observing runs (O1, O2, O3a, O3b) of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. The updated catalog includes 7 BBH mergers which were not previously reported with high significance during O3b for a total of 94 observations: 90 BBHs, 2 NSBHs, and 2 BNSs. The most confident new detection, GW200318_191337, has component masses $49.1^{+16.4}_{-12.0}\textrm{M}_\odot$ and $31.6^{+12.0}_{-11.6}\textrm{M}_\odot$; its redshift of $0.84^{+0.4}_{-0.35}$ ($90\%$ credible interval) may make it the most distant merger so far. We estimate the merger rate of BBH sources, assuming a powerlaw mass distribution containing an additive Gaussian peak, to be $16.5_{-6.2}^{+10.4} (25.0_{-8.0}^{+12.6})$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ at a redshift of $z=0$ ($0.2$). For BNS and NSBH sources, we estimate a merger rate of $200^{+309}_{-148}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ and $19^{+30}_{-14}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively, assuming the known sources are representative of the total population. We provide reference parameter estimates for each of these sources using an up-to-date model accounting for instrumental calibration uncertainty. The corresponding data release also includes our full set of sub-threshold candidates.

The emergence of $R^2$ (Starobinsky) inflation from the semi-classical modification of gravity due to matter quantum fields (trace anomaly) clearly points out the importance of fundamental physics and the first principles in the construction of successful cosmological models. Along with the observational success, $R^2$ gravity is also an important step beyond general relativity (GR) towards quantum gravity. Furthermore, several approaches of quantum gravity to date are strongly indicating the presence of non-locality at small time and length scales. In this regard, ultraviolet (UV) completion of $R^2$ inflation has been recently studied in a string theory-inspired ghost-free analytic non-local gravity. We discuss the promising theoretical predictions of non-local $R^2$-like inflation with respect to the key observables such as tensor-to-scalar ratio, tensor tilt which tell us about the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves, and scalar Non-Gaussianities which tell us about the three-point correlations in the CMB fluctuations. Any signature of non-local physics in the early Universe will significantly improve our understanding of fundamental physics at UV energy scales and quantum gravity.

We consider the effect of grey-body factors on the entanglement island prescription for computing the entropy of an arbitrary subset of the Hawking radiation of an evaporating black hole. When there is a non-trivial grey-body factor, the modes reflected back into the black hole affect the position of the quantum extremal surfaces at a subleading level with respect to the scrambling time. The grey-body factor allows us to analyse the role of irreversibility in the evaporation. In particular, we show that irreversibility allows multiple saddles to dominate the entropy, rather than just two as expected on the basis of Page's theorem. We show that these multiple saddles can be derived from a generalization of Page's theorem that involves a nested temporal sequence of unitary averages. We then consider how irreversibility affects the monogamy entanglement problem.
