Standard Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation methods are typically derived based on the Gaussian noise assumption, making them highly sensitive to outliers. Therefore, in the presence of impulsive noise, the performance of these methods may significantly deteriorate. In this paper, we model impulsive noise as Gaussian noise mixed with sparse outliers. By exploiting their statistical differences, we propose a novel DOA estimation method based on sparse signal recovery (SSR). Furthermore, to address the issue of grid mismatch, we utilize an alternating optimization approach that relies on the estimated outlier matrix and the on-grid DOA estimates to obtain the off-grid DOA estimates. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits robustness against large outliers.

We derive new closed-form expressions for the local soft minimum mean square error (MMSE)-PIC detector and receive matched filter (RMF). User authentication in future wireless communication networks is expected to become more complicated due to their large scale and heterogeneity. Furthermore, the computational complexity of classical cryptographic approaches based on public key distribution can be a limiting factor for using in simple, low-end Internet of things (IoT) devices. This paper proposes physical layer authentication (PLA) expected to complement existing traditional approaches, e.g., in multi-factor authentication protocols. The precision and consistency of PLA is impacted because of random variations of wireless channel realizations between different time slots, which can impair authentication performance. In order to address this, a method based on error-correcting codes in the form of reconciliation is considered in this work. In particular, we adopt distributed source coding (Slepian-Wolf) reconciliation using polar codes to reconcile channel measurements spread in time. Hypothesis testing is then applied to the reconciled vectors to accept or reject the device as authenticated. Simulation results show that the proposed PLA using reconciliation outperforms prior schemes even in low signal-to-noise ratio scenarios.

In this paper, channel estimation problem for extremely large-scale multi-input multi-output (XL-MIMO) systems is investigated with the considerations of the spherical wavefront effect and the spatially non-stationary (SnS) property. Due to the diversities of SnS characteristics among different propagation paths, the concurrent channel estimation of multiple paths becomes intractable. To address this challenge, we propose a two-phase channel estimation scheme. In the first phase, the angles of departure (AoDs) on the user side are estimated, and a carefully designed pilot transmission scheme enables the decomposition of the received signal from different paths. In the second phase, the subchannel estimation corresponding to different paths is formulated as a three-layer Bayesian inference problem. Specifically, the first layer captures block sparsity in the angular domain, the second layer promotes SnS property in the antenna domain, and the third layer decouples the subchannels from the observed signals. To efficiently facilitate Bayesian inference, we propose a novel three-layer generalized approximate message passing (TL-GAMP) algorithm based on structured variational massage passing and belief propagation rules. Simulation results validate the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, showcasing its robustness to different channel scenarios.

However, the power loss, efficiency, and precoding accuracy of linear precoders are usually improved by replacing them with nonlinear precoders that employ perturbation and modulo operation. In this work, we propose nonlinear user-centric precoders for CF MIMO, wherein different clusters of access points (APs) serve different users in CF multiple-antenna networks. Each cluster of APs is selected based on large-scale fading coefficients. The clustering procedure results in a sparse nonlinear precoder. We further devise a reduced-dimension nonlinear precoder, where clusters of users are created to reduce the complexity of the nonlinear precoder, the amount of required signaling, and the number of users. Numerical experiments show that the proposed nonlinear techniques for CF systems lead to an enhanced performance when compared to their linear counterparts.

In this work, we investigate the joint visibility region (VR) detection and channel estimation (CE) problem for extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems considering both the spherical wavefront effect and spatial non-stationary (SnS) property. Unlike existing SnS CE methods that rely on the statistical characteristics of channels in the spatial or delay domain, we propose an approach that simultaneously exploits the antenna-domain spatial correlation and the wavenumber-domain sparsity of SnS channels. To this end, we introduce a two-stage VR detection and CE scheme. In the first stage, the belief regarding the visibility of antennas is obtained through a VR detection-oriented message passing (VRDO-MP) scheme, which fully exploits the spatial correlation among adjacent antenna elements. In the second stage, leveraging the VR information and wavenumber-domain sparsity, we accurately estimate the SnS channel employing the belief-based orthogonal matching pursuit (BB-OMP) method. Simulations show that the proposed algorithms lead to a significant enhancement in VR detection and CE accuracy as compared to existing methods, especially in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios.

Robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) based on interference-plus-noise covariance (INC) matrix reconstruction can experience performance degradation when model mismatch errors exist, particularly when the input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is large. In this work, we devise an efficient RAB technique for dealing with covariance matrix reconstruction issues. The proposed method involves INC matrix reconstruction using an idea in which the power and the steering vector of the interferences are estimated based on the power method. Furthermore, spatial match processing is computed to reconstruct the desired signal-plus-noise covariance matrix. Then, the noise components are excluded to retain the desired signal (DS) covariance matrix. A key feature of the proposed technique is to avoid eigenvalue decomposition of the INC matrix to obtain the dominant power of the interference-plus-noise region. Moreover, the INC reconstruction is carried out according to the definition of the theoretical INC matrix. Simulation results are shown and discussed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method against existing approaches.

This work presents a cost-effective technique for designing robust adaptive beamforming algorithms based on efficient covariance matrix reconstruction with iterative spatial power spectrum (CMR-ISPS). The proposed CMR-ISPS approach reconstructs the interference-plus-noise covariance (INC) matrix based on a simplified maximum entropy power spectral density function that can be used to shape the directional response of the beamformer. Firstly, we estimate the directions of arrival (DoAs) of the interfering sources with the available snapshots. We then develop an algorithm to reconstruct the INC matrix using a weighted sum of outer products of steering vectors whose coefficients can be estimated in the vicinity of the DoAs of the interferences which lie in a small angular sector. We also devise a cost-effective adaptive algorithm based on conjugate gradient techniques to update the beamforming weights and a method to obtain estimates of the signal of interest (SOI) steering vector from the spatial power spectrum. The proposed CMR-ISPS beamformer can suppress interferers close to the direction of the SOI by producing notches in the directional response of the array with sufficient depths. Simulation results are provided to confirm the validity of the proposed method and make a comparison to existing approaches

The novel time-instance zero-crossing (TI ZX) modulation is a promising approach for this kind of channels but existing studies rely on optimization problems with high computational complexity and delay. In this work, we propose a practical waveform design based on the established TI ZX modulation for a multiuser multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink scenario with 1-bit quantization and temporal oversampling at the receivers. In this sense, the proposed temporal transmit signals are constructed by concatenating segments of coefficients which convey the information into the time-instances of zero-crossings according to the TI ZX map** rules. Low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are promising for reducing energy consumption and costs of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with many antennas. We propose low-resolution multiuser MIMO receivers where the signals are simultaneously processed by 1-bit ADCs and a comparator network, which can be interpreted as additional virtual channels with binary outputs. We distinguish the proposed comparator networks in fully and partially connected. For such receivers, we develop the low-resolution aware linear minimum mean-squared error (LRA-LMMSE) channel estimator and detector according to the Bussgang theorem. We also develop a robust detector which takes into account the channel state information (CSI) mismatch statistics. By exploiting knowledge of the channel coefficients we devise a mean-square error (MSE) greedy search and a sequential signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) search for optimization of partially connected networks. Numerical results show that a system with extra virtual channels can outperform a system with additional receive antennas, in terms of bit error rate (BER). Furthermore, by employing the proposed channel estimation with its error statistics, we construct a lower bound on the ergodic sum rate for a linear receiver. Simulation results confirm that the proposed approach outperforms the conventional 1-bit MIMO system in terms of BER, MSE and sum rate.

The pivoted QLP decomposition is computed through two consecutive pivoted QR decompositions, and provides an approximation to the singular value decomposition. This work is concerned with a partial QLP decomposition of low-rank matrices computed through randomization, termed Randomized Unpivoted QLP (RU-QLP). Like pivoted QLP, RU-QLP is rank-revealing and yet it utilizes random column sampling and the unpivoted QR decomposition. The latter modifications allow RU-QLP to be highly parallelizable on modern computational platforms. We provide an analysis for RU-QLP, deriving bounds in spectral and Frobenius norms on: i) the rank-revealing property; ii) principal angles between approximate subspaces and exact singular subspaces and vectors; and iii) low-rank approximation errors. Effectiveness of the bounds is illustrated through numerical tests. We further use a modern, multicore machine equipped with a GPU to demonstrate the efficiency of RU-QLP. Our results show that compared to the randomized SVD, RU-QLP achieves a speedup of up to 7.1 times on the CPU and up to 2.3 times with the GPU.

Most of the literature focuses on the development of the linear active noise control (ANC) techniques. However, ANC systems might have to deal with some nonlinear components and the performance of linear ANC techniques may degrade in this scenario. To overcome this limitation, nonlinear ANC (NLANC) algorithms were developed. In Part II, we review the development of NLANC algorithms during the last decade. The contributions of heuristic ANC algorithms are outlined. Moreover, we emphasize recent advances of NLANC algorithms, such as spline ANC algorithms, kernel adaptive filters, and nonlinear distributed ANC algorithms. Then, we present recent applications of ANC technique including linear and nonlinear perspectives. Future research challenges regarding ANC techniques are also discussed.

Abstract:
In this paper, we introduce a randomized QLP decomposition called Rand-QLP. Operating on a matrix $\bf A$, Rand-QLP gives ${\bf A}={\bf QLP}^T$, where $\bf Q$ and $\bf P$ are orthonormal, and $\bf L$ is lower-triangular. Operating on a matrix $\bf A$, Rand-QLP gives ${\bf A}={\bf QLP}^T$, where $\bf Q$ and $\bf P$ are orthonormal, and $\bf L$ is lower-triangular. Under the assumption that the rank of the input matrix is $k$, we derive several error bounds for Rand-QLP: bounds for the first $k$ approximate singular values and for the trailing block of the middle factor $\bf L$, which show that the decomposition is rank-revealing; bounds for the distance between approximate subspaces and the exact ones for all four fundamental subspaces of a given matrix; and bounds for the errors of low-rank approximations constructed by the columns of $\bf Q$ and $\bf P$. Rand-QLP is able to effectively leverage modern computational architectures, due to the utilization of random sampling and the unpivoted QR decomposition, thus addressing a serious bottleneck associated with classical algorithms such as the singular value decomposition (SVD), column-pivoted QR (CPQR) and most recent matrix decomposition algorithms. To assess the performance behavior of different algorithms, we use an Intel Xeon Gold 6240 CPU running at 2.6 GHz with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti GPU. In comparison to CPQR and the SVD, Rand-QLP respectively achieves a speedup of up to 5 times and 6.6 times on the CPU and up to 3.8 times and 4.4 times with the hybrid GPU architecture. In terms of quality of approximation, our results on synthetic and real data show that the approximations by Rand-QLP are comparable to those of pivoted QLP and the optimal SVD, and in most cases are considerably better than those of CPQR.

This paper proposes an enhanced coarray transformation model (EDCTM) and a mixed greedy maximum likelihood algorithm called List-Based Maximum Likelihood Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (LBML-OMP) for direction-of-arrival estimation with non-uniform linear arrays (NLAs). The proposed EDCTM approach obtains improved estimates when Khatri-Rao product-based models are used to generate difference coarrays under the assumption of uncorrelated sources. In the proposed LBML-OMP technique, for each iteration a set of candidates is generated based on the correlation-maximization between the dictionary and the residue vector. LBML-OMP then chooses the best candidate based on a reduced-complexity asymptotic maximum likelihood decision rule. Simulations show the improved results of EDCTM over existing approaches and that LBML-OMP outperforms existing sparse recovery algorithms as well as Spatial Smoothing Multiple Signal Classification with NLAs.

This paper investigates the physical layer security design of an untrusted relaying network where the source node coexists with a multi-antenna eavesdropper (Eve). While the communication relies on untrustworthy relay nodes to increase reliability, we aim to protect the confidentiality of information against combined eavesdrop** attacks performed by both untrusted relay nodes and Eve. Taking into account the hardware impairments, and power budget constraints, this paper presents a novel approach to jointly optimize relay beamformer and transmit powers aimed at maximizing average secrecy rate (ASR). The resultant optimization problem is non-convex, and a suboptimal solution is obtained through the sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA) method. In order to prevent any failure due to infeasibility, we propose an iterative initialization algorithm to find the feasible initial point of the original problem. To satisfy low-latency as one of the main key performance indicators (KPI) required in beyond 5G (B5G) communications, a computationally efficient data-driven approach is developed exploiting a deep learning model to improve the ASR while the computational burden is significantly reduced. Simulation results assess the effect of different system parameters on the ASR performance as well as the effectiveness of the proposed deep learning solution in large-scale cases.

A theoretical analysis shows that the S-IWF-SSAF algorithm outperforms the previous sign subband adaptive filtering with individual weighting factors (IWF-SSAF) algorithm in sparse scenarios. In particular, compared with the existing analysis on the IWF-SSAF algorithm, the proposed analysis does not require the assumptions of large number of subbands, long adaptive filter, and paraunitary analysis filter bank, and matches well the simulated results. Simulations in both system identification and AEC situations have demonstrated our theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

The main challenge of massive machine-type communications (mMTC) is the joint activity and signal detection of devices. The mMTC scenario with many devices transmitting data intermittently at low data rates and via very short packets enables its modelling as a sparse signal processing problem. In this work, we consider a grant-free system and propose a detection and decoding scheme that jointly detects activity and signals of devices. The proposed scheme consists of a list detection technique, an $l_0$-norm regularized activity-aware recursive least-squares algorithm, and an iterative detection and decoding (IDD) approach that exploits the device activity probability. In particular, the proposed list detection technique uses two candidate-list schemes to enhance the detection performance. We also incorporate the proposed list detection technique into an IDD scheme based on low-density parity-check codes. We derive uplink sum-rate expressions that take into account metadata collisions, interference and a variable activity probability for each user. A computational complexity analysis shows that the proposed list detector does not require a significant additional complexity over existing detectors, whereas a diversity analysis discusses its diversity order. Simulations show that the proposed scheme obtains a performance superior to existing suboptimal detectors and close to the oracle LMMSE detector.

Large-scale multiple-antenna systems with large bandwidth are fundamental for future wireless communications, where the base station employs a large antenna array. In this scenario, one problem faced is the large energy consumption as the number of receive antennas scales up. Recently, low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) have attracted much attention. Specifically, 1-bit ADCs are suitable for such systems due to their low cost and low energy consumption. This paper considers uplink large-scale multiple-antenna systems with 1-bit ADCs on each receive antenna. We investigate the benefits of using oversampling for channel estimation in terms of the mean square error and symbol error rate performance. This work proposes diffusion normalized least mean M-estimate algorithm based on the modified Huber function, which can equip distributed networks with robust learning capability in the presence of impulsive interference. In order to exploit the system's underlying sparsity to further improve the learning performance, a sparse-aware variant is also developed by incorporating the $l_0$-norm of the estimates into the update process. We then analyze the transient, steady-state and stability behaviors of the algorithms in a unified framework. In particular, we present an analytical method that is simpler than conventional approaches to deal with the score function since it removes the requirements of integrals and Price's theorem. Simulations in various impulsive noise scenarios show that the proposed algorithms are superior to some existing diffusion algorithms and the theoretical results are verifiable.

It is known that the estimated energy consumption of digital-to analog converters (DACs) is around 30\% of the energy consumed by analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) kee** fixed the sampling rate and bit resolution. Assuming that similarly to ADC, DAC dissipation doubles with every extra bit of resolution, a decrease in two resolution bits, for instance from 4 to 2 bits, represents a 75$\% $ lower dissipation. The current limitations in sum-rates of 1-bit quantization have motivated researchers to consider extra bits in resolution to obtain higher levels of sum-rates. Following this, we devise coarse quantization-aware precoding using few bits for the broadcast channel of multiple-antenna systems based on the Bussgang theorem. In particular, we consider block diagonalization algorithms, which have not been considered in the literature so far. Space-time adaptive processing (STAP) algorithms with coprime arrays can provide good clutter suppression potential with low cost in airborne radar systems as compared with their uniform linear arrays counterparts. However, the performance of these algorithms is limited by the training samples support in practical applications. To address this issue, a robust two-stage reduced-dimension (RD) sparsity-aware STAP algorithm is proposed in this work. In the first stage, an RD virtual snapshot is constructed using all spatial channels but only $m$ adjacent Doppler channels around the target Doppler frequency to reduce the slow-time dimension of the signal. In the second stage, an RD sparse measurement modeling is formulated based on the constructed RD virtual snapshot, where the sparsity of clutter and the prior knowledge of the clutter ridge are exploited to formulate an RD overcomplete dictionary. Moreover, an orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP)-like method is proposed to recover the clutter subspace. In order to set the stop** parameter of the OMP-like method, a robust clutter rank estimation approach is developed. Compared with recently developed sparsity-aware STAP algorithms, the size of the proposed sparse representation dictionary is much smaller, resulting in low complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is robust to prior knowledge errors and can provide good clutter suppression performance in low sample support.

In this work, we present a novel robust distributed beamforming (RDB) approach based on low-rank and cross-correlation techniques. The proposed RDB approach mitigates the effects of channel errors in wireless networks equipped with relays based on the exploitation of the cross-correlation between the received data from the relays at the destination and the system output and low-rank techniques. The relay nodes are equipped with an amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol and the channel errors are modeled using an additive matrix perturbation, which results in degradation of the system performance. The proposed method, denoted low-rank and cross-correlation RDB (LRCC-RDB), considers a total relay transmit power constraint in the system and the goal of maximizing the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). With the knowledge of the probability for each atom of the dictionary being used, a diagonal weighted matrix is obtained and then the sensing matrix is designed by minimizing a weighted function such that the Gram of the equivalent dictionary is as close to the Gram of dictionary as possible. An analytical solution for the corresponding sensing matrix is derived which leads to low computational complexity. Large-scale multiple-antenna systems have been identified as a promising technology for the next generation of wireless systems. However, by scaling up the number of receive antennas the energy consumption will also increase. One possible solution is to use low-resolution analog-to-digital converters at the receiver. This paper considers large-scale multiple-antenna uplink systems with 1-bit analog-to-digital converters on each receive antenna. Since oversampling can partially compensate for the information loss caused by the coarse quantization, the received signals are firstly oversampled by a factor M. We then propose a low-resolution aware linear minimum mean-squared error channel estimator for 1-bit oversampled systems. Moreover, we characterize analytically the performance of the proposed channel estimator by deriving an upper bound on the Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound. In this work, a novel sparsity-aware RD-BD-STAP algorithm, denoted Sparse Constraint on Beam-Doppler Selection Reduced-Dimension Space-Time Adaptive Processing (SCBDS-RD-STAP), is proposed can adaptively selects the best beam-Doppler cells for adaptation. The proposed SCBDS-RD-STAP approach formulates the filter design as a sparse representation problem and enforcing most of the elements in the weight vector to be zero (or sufficiently small in amplitude). Simulation results illustrate that the proposed SCBDS-RD-STAP algorithm outperforms the traditional RD-BD-STAP approaches with fixed beam-Doppler localized processing.

This work develops a robust diffusion recursive least squares algorithm to mitigate the performance degradation often experienced in networks of agents in the presence of impulsive noise. This algorithm minimizes an exponentially weighted least-squares cost function subject to a time-dependent constraint on the squared norm of the intermediate estimate update at each node. With the help of side information, the constraint is recursively updated in a diffusion strategy. Moreover, a control strategy for resetting the constraint is also proposed to retain good tracking capability when the estimated parameters suddenly change. Simulations show the superiority of the proposed algorithm over previously reported techniques in various impulsive noise scenarios.

In this work, we present direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithms based on the Krylov subspace that effectively exploit prior knowledge of the signals that im**e on a sensor array. The proposed multi-step knowledge-aided iterative conjugate gradient (CG) (MS-KAI-CG) algorithms perform subtraction of the unwanted terms found in the estimated covariance matrix of the sensor data. Furthermore, we develop a version of MS-KAI-CG equipped with forward-backward averaging, called MS-KAI-CG-FB, which is appropriate for scenarios with correlated signals. Unlike current knowledge-aided methods, which take advantage of known DoAs to enhance the estimation of the covariance matrix of the input data, the MS-KAI-CG algorithms take advantage of the knowledge of the structure of the forward-backward smoothed covariance matrix and its disturbance terms. Simulations with both uncorrelated and correlated signals show that the MS-KAI-CG algorithms outperform existing techniques.

Low-rank matrix approximation plays an increasingly important role in signal and image processing applications. This paper presents a new rank-revealing decomposition method called randomized rank-revealing UZV decomposition (RRR-UZVD). RRR-UZVD is powered by randomization to approximate a low-rank input matrix. Given a large and dense matrix ${\bf A} \in \mathbb R^{m \times n}$ whose numerical rank is $k$, where $k$ is much smaller than $m$ and $n$, RRR-UZVD constructs an approximation $\hat{\bf A}$ such as $\hat{\bf A}={\bf UZV}^T$, where ${\bf U}$ and ${\bf V}$ have orthonormal columns, the leading-diagonal block of ${\bf Z}$ reveals the rank of $\bf A$, and its off-diagonal blocks have small $\ell_2$-norms. RRR-UZVD is simple, accurate, and only requires a few passes through $\bf A$ with an arithmetic cost of $O(mnk)$ floating-point operations. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct experiments on synthetic data, as well as real data in applications of image reconstruction and robust principal component analysis.

In this work, we propose a subspace-based algorithm for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation applied to the signals im**ing on a two-level nested array, referred to as multi-step knowledge-aided iterative nested MUSIC method (MS-KAI-Nested-MUSIC), which significantly improves the accuracy of the original Nested-MUSIC. Differently from existing knowledge-aided methods applied to uniform linear arrays (ULAs), which make use of available known DOAs to improve the estimation of the covariance matrix of the input data, the proposed Multi-Step KAI-Nested-MU employs knowledge of the structure of the augmented sample covariance matrix, which is obtained by exploiting the difference co-array structure covariance matrix, and its perturbation terms and the gradual incorporation of prior knowledge, which is obtained on line. The effectiveness of the proposed technique can be noticed by simulations focusing on uncorrelated closely-spaced sources.

We propose two sparsity-aware normalized subband adaptive filter (NSAF) algorithms by using the gradient descent method to minimize a combination of the original NSAF cost function and the l1-norm penalty function on the filter coefficients. This l1-norm penalty exploits the sparsity of a system in the coefficients update formulation, thus improving the performance when identifying sparse systems. Compared with prior work, the proposed algorithms have lower computational complexity with comparable performance. We study and devise statistical models for these sparsity-aware NSAF algorithms in the mean square sense involving their transient and steady -state behaviors. This study relies on the vectorization argument and the paraunitary assumption imposed on the analysis filter banks, and thus does not restrict the input signal to being Gaussian or having another distribution. In addition, we propose to adjust adaptively the intensity parameter of the sparsity attraction term. Finally, simulation results in sparse system identification demonstrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results.
