This paper proposes a tensor-based parametric modeling and estimation framework in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems assisted by intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). We present two algorithms that exploit the tensor structure of the received pilot signal to estimate the concatenated channel. The first one is an iterative solution based on the alternating least squares algorithm. In contrast, the second method provides closed-form estimates of the involved parameters using the high order single value decomposition. Our numerical results show that our proposed tensor-based methods provide improved performance compared to competing state-of-the-art channel estimation schemes, thanks to the exploitation of the algebraic tensor structure of the combined channel without additional computational complexity.

In this letter, we consider an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication and we optimize the joint active and passive beamforming by exploiting the geometrical structure of the propagation channels. Due to the inherent Kronecker product structure of the channel matrix, the global beamforming optimization problem is split into lower dimensional horizontal and vertical sub-problems. Based on this factorization property, we propose two closed-form methods for passive and active beamforming designs, at the IRS, the base station, and user equipment, respectively. The first solution is a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based algorithm independently applied on the factorized channels, while the second method resorts to a third-order rank-one tensor approximation along each domain. Simulation results show that exploiting the channel Kronecker structures yields a significant improvement in terms of computational complexity at the expense of negligible spectral efficiency (SE) loss. We also show that under imperfect channel estimation, the tensor-based solution shows better SE than the benchmark and proposed SVD-based solutions.

This paper proposes a pilot decoupling-based two-dimensional channel parameter estimation method for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted networks. We exploit the combined effect of Terahertz sparse propagation and the geometrical structure of arrays deployed at the base station, the IRS, and the user equipment to develop a low-complexity channel parameter estimation method. By means of a new pilot design along the horizontal and vertical domains, the overall channel parameter estimation problem is decoupled into different domains. Furthermore, with this decoupling, it is possible to simultaneously sense/estimate the channel parameters and to communicate with the sensed node. Specifically, we derive two estimators by decoupling the global problem into sub-problems and exploiting the built-in tensor structure of the sensing/estimation problem by means of multiple rank-one approximations. The Cramér-Rao lower bound is derived to assess the performance of the proposed estimators. We show that the two proposed methods yield accurate parameter estimates and outperform state-of-the-art methods in terms of complexity. The tradeoffs between performance and complexity offered by the proposed methods are discussed and numerically assessed.

This letter proposes a high-resolution channel estimation for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication networks. We exploit the inherent geometrical structure of the Terahertz propagation channel, including the antenna array geometries at the base station, the RIS, and the user equipment to design a tensor-based high-resolution channel estimator, referred to as the higher-dimensional rank-one approximations (HDR) method. By exploiting the geometrical structure of the combined base station-RIS-user equipment channel, the proposed HDR estimator recasts parametric channel estimation as a single sixth-order rank-one tensor approximation problem, which can be efficiently solved using higher-order singular value decomposition to deliver parallel estimates of each channel component vector. Numerical results show that the proposed method provides significantly more accurate parameter estimates compared to the competing state-of-the-art Khatri-Rao factorization and least squares methods. The HDR method also leads to higher spectral efficiency than its competitors, especially in the low signal-to-noise ratio regime, while having similar computational complexity as the classical least squares method.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface is a potential technology component of future wireless networks due to its capability of sha** the wireless environment. The promising MIMO systems in terms of extended coverage and enhanced capacity are, however, critically dependent on the accuracy of the channel state information. However, traditional channel estimation schemes are not applicable in RIS-assisted MIMO networks, since passive RISs typically lack the signal processing capabilities that are assumed by channel estimation algorithms. This becomes most problematic when physical imperfections or electronic impairments affect the RIS due to its exposition to different environmental effects or caused by hardware limitations from the circuitry. While these real-world effects are typically ignored in the literature, in this paper we propose efficient channel estimation schemes for RIS-assisted MIMO systems taking different imperfections into account. Specifically, we propose two sets of tensor-based algorithms, based on the parallel factor analysis decomposition schemes. First, by assuming a long-term model in which the RIS imperfections, modeled as unknown phase shifts, are static within the channel coherence time we formulate an iterative alternating least squares (ALS)-based algorithm for the joint estimation of the communication channels and the unknown phase deviations. Next, we develop the short-term imperfection model, which allows both amplitude and phase RIS imperfections to be non-static with respect to the channel coherence time. We propose two iterative ALS-based and closed-form higher order singular value decomposition-based algorithms for the joint estimation of the channels and the unknown impairments. Moreover, we analyze the identifiability and computational complexity of the proposed algorithms and study the effects of various imperfections on the channel estimation quality.

Passive intelligent reconfigurable surfaces (IRS) are becoming an attractive component of cellular networks due to their ability of sha** the propagation environment and thereby improving the coverage. While passive IRS nodes incorporate a great number of phase-shifting elements and a controller entity, the phase-shifts are typically determined by the cellular base station (BS) due to its computational capability. Since the fine granularity control of the large number of phase-shifters may become prohibitive in practice, it is important to reduce the control overhead between the BS and the IRS controller. To this end, in this paper we propose a low-rank approximation of the near-optimal phase-shifts, which would incur prohibitively high communication overhead on the BS-IRS controller links. The key idea is to represent the potentially large IRS phase-shift vector using a low-rank tensor model. This is achieved by factorizing a tensorized version of the IRS phase-shift vector, where each component is modeled as the Kronecker product of a predefined number of factors of smaller sizes, which can be obtained via tensor decomposition algorithms. We show that the proposed low-rank models drastically reduce the required feedback requirements associated with the BS-IRS control links. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed method is especially attractive in scenarios with a strong line of sight component, in which case nearly the same spectral efficiency is reached as in the cases with near-optimal phase-shifts, but with a drastically reduced communication overhead.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technology for the 6th generation of wireless systems, realizing the smart radio environment concept. In this paper, we present a novel tensor-based receiver for IRS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output communications capable of jointly estimating the channels and the transmitted data streams in a semi-blind fashion. Assuming a fully passive IRS architecture and introducing a simple space-time coding scheme at the transmitter, the received signal model can be advantageously built using the PARATUCK tensor model, which can be seen as a hybrid of parallel factor analysis and Tucker models. Exploiting the algebraic structure of the PARATUCK tensor model, a semi-blind receiver is derived. The proposed receiver is based on a trilinear alternating least squares method that iteratively estimates the two involved - IRS- base station and user terminal-IRS-communication channels and the transmitted symbol matrix. We discuss identifiability conditions that ensure the joint semi-blind recovery of the involved channel and symbol matrices, and propose a joint design of the coding and IRS reflection matrices to optimize the receiver performance. For the proposed semi-blind receiver, the derivation of the expected Cramér-Rao lower bound is also provided. A numerical performance evaluation of the proposed receiver design corroborates its superior performance in terms of the normalized mean squared error of the estimated channels and the achieved symbol error rate.

However, most of the current works assume single-RIS (S-RIS)-aided systems, which can be limited in some application scenarios where a transmitter might need a multi-RIS-aided channel to communicate with a receiver. In this paper, we consider a double-RIS (D-RIS)-aided MIMO system and propose an alternating least-squared-based channel estimation method by exploiting the Tucker2 tensor structure of the received signals. Using the proposed method, the cascaded MIMO channel parts can be estimated separately, up to trivial scaling factors. Compared with the S-RIS systems, we show that if the RIS elements of a S-RIS system are distributed carefully between the two RISs in a D-RIS system, the training overhead can be reduced and the estimation accuracy can also be increased. Therefore, D-RIS systems can be seen as an appealing approach to further increase the coverage, capacity, and efficiency of future wireless networks compared to S-RIS systems.

In this work, we consider both channel estimation and reflection design problems in point-to-point reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) MIMO communication systems. First, we show that by exploiting the low-rank nature of mmWave MIMO channels, the received training signals can be written as a low-rank multi-way tensor admitting a canonical polyadic CP decomposition. Utilizing such a structure, a tensor-based RIS channel estimation method (termed TenRICE) is proposed, wherein the tensor factor matrices are estimated using an alternating least squares method. Using TenRICE, the transmitter-to-RIS and the RIS-to-receiver channels are efficiently and separately estimated, up to a trivial scaling factor. After that, we formulate the beamforming and RIS reflection design as a spectral efficiency maximization problem. Due to its non-convexity, we propose a heuristic non-iterative two-step method, where the RIS reflection vector is obtained in a closed form using a Frobenius-norm maximization (FroMax) strategy. Our numerical results show that TenRICE has a superior performance, compared to benchmark methods, approaching the Cramér-Rao lower bound with a low training overhead. Moreover, we show that FroMax achieves a comparable performance to benchmark methods with a lower complexity.

The promised gains of IRS-assisted communications depend on the accuracy of the channel state information. In this paper, we address the receiver design for an IRS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system via a tensor modeling approach aiming at the channel estimation problem using supervised (pilot-assisted) methods. Considering a structured time-domain pattern of pilots and IRS phase shifts, we present two channel estimation methods that rely on a parallel factor (PARAFAC) tensor modeling of the received signals. The first one has a closed-form solution based on a Khatri-Rao factorization of the cascaded MIMO channel, by solving rank-1 matrix approximation problems, while the second one is an iterative alternating estimation scheme. The common feature of both methods is the decoupling of the estimates of the involved MIMO channel matrices (base station-IRS and IRS-user terminal), which provides performance enhancements in comparison to competing methods that are based on unstructured LS estimates of the cascaded channel. Design recommendations for both methods that guide the choice of the system parameters are discussed. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed receivers, highlight the involved trade-offs, and corroborate their superior performance compared to competing LS-based solutions.

To achieve high data rates defined in 5G, the use of millimeter-waves and massive-MIMO are indispensable. To benefit from these technologies, an accurate estimation of the channel parameters is crucial. We propose a novel two-stage algorithm for channel parameters estimation. In the first stage, coarse estimation is accomplished by applying parameter estimation via interpolation based on DFT grid (PREIDG) with a fixed look-up table (LUT), while the second stage refines the estimates by means of the space-alternating generalized expectation maximization (SAGE) algorithm. The two-stage algorithm uses discrete Fourier transform beamforming vectors which are efficiently implemented by a Butler matrix in the analog domain. We found that this methodology improves the estimates compared to the auxiliary beam pair (ABP) method. The two-stage algorithm shows efficient performance in the low signal to noise ratio regime for the channel parameters i.e. angles of departure, complex path gains and delays of the multipaths. The slice-wise multiplication of two tensors is required in a variety of tensor decompositions (including PARAFAC2 and PARATUCK2) and is encountered in many applications, including the analysis of multidimensional biomedical data (EEG, MEG, etc.) or multi-carrier MIMO systems. In this paper, we propose a new tensor representation that is not based on a slice-wise (matrix) description, but can be represented by a double contraction of two tensors. Such a double contraction of two tensors can be efficiently calculated via generalized unfoldings. It leads to new tensor models of the investigated system that do not depend on the chosen unfolding and reveal the tensor structure of the data model (such that all possible unfoldings can be seen at the same time). As an example, we apply this new concept to the design of new receivers for multi-carrier MIMO systems in wireless communications. In particular, we consider MIMO OFDM systems with and without Khatri-Rao coding. The proposed receivers exploit the channel correlation between adjacent subcarriers, require the same amount of training symbols as traditional OFDM techniques, but have an improved performance in terms of the symbol error rate. Furthermore, we show that the spectral efficiency of the Khatri-Rao coded MIMO-OFDM can be increased by introducing "random coding" such that the "coding matrix" also contains useful information symbols. Considering this transmission technique, we derive a tensor model and two types of receivers for randomly coded MIMO-OFDM systems using the double contraction of two tensors.

To achieve a reliable communication with short data blocks, we propose a novel decoding strategy for Kronecker-structured constant modulus signals that provides low bit error ratios (BERs) especially in the low energy per bit to noise power spectral density ratio $(E_b/N_0)$. The encoder exploits the fact that any M-PSK constellation can be factorized as Kronecker products of lower or equal order PSK constellation sets. A construction of two types of schemes is first derived. For such Kronecker-structured schemes, a conceptually simple decoding algorithm is proposed, referred to as Kronecker-RoD (rank-one detector). The decoder is based on a rank-one approximation of the "tensorized" received data block, has a built-in noise rejection capability and a smaller implementation complexity than state-of-the-art detectors. Compared with convolutional codes with hard and soft Viterbi decoding, Kronecker-RoD outperforms the latter in BER performance at same spectral efficiency.

New-generation wireless communication systems will employ large-scale antenna arrays to satisfy the increasing capacity demand. This massive scenario brings new challenges to the channel equalization problem due to the increased signal processing complexity. We present a novel low-rank tensor equalizer to tackle the high computational demands of the classical linear approach. Specifically, we propose a method to design a canonical polyadic tensor filter to minimize the mean square error criterion. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed equalizer needs fewer calculations and is more robust to short training sequences than the benchmark.

We propose practical transceiver structures for double-sided massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Unlike standard massive MIMO, both transmit and receive sides are equipped with high-dimensional antenna arrays. We leverage the multi-layer filtering architecture and propose novel layered transceiver schemes with practical channel state information requirements to simplify the complexity of our double-sided massive MIMO system. We conduct a comprehensive simulation campaign to investigate the performance of the proposed transceivers under different channel propagation conditions and to identify the most suitable strategy. Our results show that the covariance matrix eigenfilter design at the outer transceiver layer combined with maximum eigenmode transmission precoding/minimum mean square error combining at the inner transceiver layer yields the best achievable sum rate performance for different propagation conditions and multi-user interference levels.
