In this paper, a maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control strategy for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) using dual control for exploration and exploitation (DCEE). In the proposed method, the permanent magnet flux and the difference between the $d$- and $q$-axis inductance are identified by multiple estimators using the recursive least square method. The initial values of the estimated parameters in different estimators are different. By using multiple estimators, exploration of the operational environment to reduce knowledge uncertainty can be realized. Compared to those MTPA control strategies based on the extremum-seeking method, the proposed method has better dynamic performance when speed or load varies. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulations.

In the evolving environment of mobile edge computing (MEC), optimizing system performance to meet the growing demand for low-latency computing services is a top priority. Integrating fluidic antenna (FA) technology into MEC networks provides a new approach to address this challenge. This letter proposes an FA-enabled MEC scheme that aims to minimize the total system delay by leveraging the mobility of FA to enhance channel conditions and improve computational offloading efficiency. By establishing an optimization problem focusing on the joint optimization of computation offloading and antenna positioning, we introduce an alternating iterative algorithm based on the interior point method and particle swarm optimization (IPPSO). Numerical results demonstrate the advantages of our proposed scheme compared to traditional fixed antenna positions, showing significant improvements in transmission rates and reductions in delays. The proposed IPPSO algorithm exhibits robust convergence properties, further validating the effectiveness of our method.

The research on the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications for the development of future mobile communication networks has been officially launched around the world. 6G networks face multifarious challenges, such as resource-constrained mobile devices, difficult wireless resource management, high complexity of heterogeneous network architectures, explosive computing and storage requirements, privacy and security threats. To address these challenges, deploying blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) in 6G networks may realize new breakthroughs in advancing network performances in terms of security, privacy, efficiency, cost, and more. In this paper, we provide a detailed survey of existing works on the application of blockchain and AI to 6G wireless communications. More specifically, we start with a brief overview of blockchain and AI. Then, we mainly review the recent advances in the fusion of blockchain and AI, and highlight the inevitable trend of deploying both blockchain and AI in wireless communications. As the share of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs) in power distribution systems increases, hybrid AC/DC distribution systems are drawing more interest. Indeed, CIDERs usually rely on DC power and hybrid AC/DC grids with few Network-Interfacing Converters (NICs) are a promising solution to decrease installation costs and conversion losses compared to a pure AC grid. However, interactions between the AC and DC subsystem of a hybrid AC/DC grid can lead to undesirable amplification and propagation of harmonics. The authors of this paper have recently proposed a Harmonic Power-Flow (HPF) method that accurately represents the AC power flows including the coupling between different harmonics. The HPF framework is formulated through the mismatch equations of the nodal equations between the grid and the resource models and solved by a Newton Raphson algorithm. This paper updates the HPF method to model hybrid AC/DC grids interconnected through NICs. To this end, the model of the NICs and the resulting coupling between the AC and DC subsystems is included in the mismatch equations and the Jacobian matrix of the algorithm. The updated HPF method is applied to a typical hybrid AC/DC grid, and its accuracy is validated through detailed time-domain simulations with Simulink.

A mainstream type of the state of the arts (SOTAs) based on convolutional neural network (CNN) for real image denoising contains two sub-problems, i.e., noise estimation and non-blind denoising. This paper considers real noise approximated by heteroscedastic Gaussian/Poisson Gaussian distributions with in-camera signal processing pipelines. The related works always exploit the estimated noise prior via channel-wise concatenation followed by a convolutional layer with spatially sharing kernels. Due to the variable modes of noise strength and frequency details of all feature positions, this design cannot adaptively tune the corresponding denoising patterns. To address this problem, we propose a novel conditional filter in which the optimal kernels for different feature positions can be adaptively inferred by local features from the image and the noise map. Also, we bring the thought that alternatively performs noise estimation and non-blind denoising into CNN structure, which continuously updates noise prior to guide the iterative feature denoising. In addition, according to the property of heteroscedastic Gaussian distribution, a novel affine transform block is designed to predict the stationary noise component and the signal-dependent noise component. Compared with SOTAs, extensive experiments are conducted on five synthetic datasets and three real datasets, which shows the improvement of the proposed CFNet.

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite has been considered as a potential supplement for the terrestrial Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we consider grant-free non-orthogonal random access (GF-NORA) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system to increase access capacity and reduce access latency for LEO satellite-IoT. We focus on the joint device activity detection (DAD) and channel estimation (CE) problem at the satellite access point. The delay and the Doppler effect of the LEO satellite channel are assumed to be partially compensated. We propose an OFDM-symbol repetition technique to better distinguish the residual Doppler frequency shifts, and present a grid-based parametric probability model to characterize channel sparsity in the delay-Doppler-user domain, as well as to characterize the relationship between the channel states and the device activity. Based on that, we develop a robust Bayesian message passing algorithm named modified variance state propagation (MVSP) for joint DAD and CE. Moreover, to tackle the mismatch between the real channel and its on-grid representation, an expectation-maximization (EM) framework is proposed to learn the grid parameters. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithms significantly outperform the existing approaches in both activity detection probability and channel estimation accuracy.

This paper introduces the methods and the results of AIM 2022 challenge on Instagram Filter Removal. Social media filters transform the images by consecutive non-linear operations, and the feature maps of the original content may be interpolated into a different domain. This reduces the overall performance of the recent deep learning strategies. The main goal of this challenge is to produce realistic and visually plausible images where the impact of the filters applied is mitigated while preserving the content. The proposed solutions are ranked in terms of the PSNR value with respect to the original images. There are two prior studies on this task as the baseline, and a total of 9 teams have competed in the final phase of the challenge. The comparison of qualitative results of the proposed solutions and the benchmark for the challenge are presented in this report.

Power distribution systems experience a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). As acknowledged by recent literature, the interaction of individual CIDER components and different CIDERs through the grid can lead to undesirable amplification of harmonic frequencies and, ultimately, compromise the distribution system stability. In this context, the interaction of the DC and AC sides of CIDERs has been shown to have a significant impact. In order to analyze and support the mitigation of such phenomena, the authors of this paper recently proposed a Harmonic Power-Flow (HPF) framework for polyphase grids with a high share of CIDERs. The framework considers the coupling between harmonics, but ignores the DC-side response of the CIDERs. Modelling the DC side and AC/DC converter introduces a nonlinearity into the CIDER model that needs to be approximated for the numerical solution of the HPF. This paper extends the CIDER model and HPF framework to address this aspect, whose inclusion is non-trivial. The extended HPF method is applied to a modified version of the CIGRE low-voltage benchmark microgrid. The results are compared to (i) time-domain simulations with Simulink, (ii) the predecessor of the extended HPF which neglects the DC side, and (iii) a classical decoupled HPF.

This paper proposes and experimentally validates a joint control and scheduling framework for a grid-forming converter-interfaced BESS providing multiple services to the electrical grid. The framework is designed to dispatch the operation of a distribution feeder hosting heterogeneous prosumers according to a dispatch plan and provide frequency containment reserve and voltage control as additional services. The framework consists of three phases. In the day-ahead scheduling phase, a robust optimization problem is solved to compute the optimal dispatch plan and frequency droop coefficient, accounting for the uncertainty of the aggregated prosumption. In the intra-day phase, a model predictive control algorithm is used to compute the power set-point for the BESS to achieve the tracking of the dispatch plan. Finally, in a real-time stage, the power setpoint originated by the dispatch tracking is converted into a feasible frequency set-point for the grid forming converter by means of a convex optimisation problem accounting for the capability curve of the power converter. The proposed framework is experimentally validated by using a grid-scale 720 kVA/560 kWh BESS connected to a 20 kV distribution feeder of the EPFL hosting stochastic prosumption and PV generation.

The progressive displacing of conventional generation in favour of renewable energy sources requires restoring an adequate capacity of regulating power to ensure reliable operation of power systems. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are considered to be promising assets to restore suitable frequency regulation capacity levels. BESSs are typically connected to the grid with power-converters, able to operate in either grid-forming or grid-following modes. This paper quantitatively assesses the impact on the local distribution grid of BESSs providing frequency regulation to bulk power systems. Specific metrics are proposed to compare the performance of grid-forming and grid-following control. Experimental results are obtained taking advantage of a 720 kVA/500 kWh BESS connected to the 20 kV distribution grid of the EPFL campus. The quantitative evaluation based on suitably proposed metrics confirms the superior performance of the grid-forming strategy, compared to the grid-following one.

Within this context, the paper proposes a framework that, by making use of linear models of the frequency response of different types of power plants, including also grid--forming and grid-following converters, is capable to infer a numerically tractable dynamical model to be used in frequency stability assessment. Furthermore, the proposed framework makes use of models defined in a way such that their parameters can be inferred from real-time measurements feeding a classical least squares estimator. A major concern associated to the massive connection of distributed energy resources is the increasing share of power electronic interfaces resulting in the global inertia reduction of power systems. The recent literature advocated the use of voltage source converter (VSC) interfaced battery energy storage system (BESS) as a potential way to counterbalance this lack of inertia. However, the impact of VSCs on the dynamics of reduced-inertia grids is not well understood especially with respect to large transmission grids interfacing a mix of rotating machines and resources interfaced with power electronics. In this regards, we propose an extension of the IEEE 39-bus test network used to quantify the impact of VSCs on reduced-inertia grids. In this respect, a reduced-inertia 39-bus system is obtained by replacing 4 synchronous generators in the original 10-synchronous machine system, with 4 wind power plants modeled as aggregated type-3 wind turbines. Then, a large-scale BESS is integrated into the reduced-inertia network via a three-level neutral-point clamped (NPC) converter, thereby to be used for studying the impact of VSC on the dynamics of the inertia-reduced power system, as well as for comparing different VSC controls. The proposed models are implemented on a real-time simulator to conduct post-contingency analysis, respectively, for the original power system and the reduced-inertia one, with and without the BESS-VSC.

In modern power systems, the Rate-of-Change-of-Frequency (ROCOF) may be largely employed in Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) applications. However, a standard approach towards ROCOF measurements is still missing. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) deployment in ROCOF-based applications, with a specific focus on Under-Frequency Load-Shedding (UFLS). For this analysis, we select three state-of-the-art window-based synchrophasor estimation algorithms and compare different signal models, ROCOF estimation techniques and window lengths in datasets inspired by real-world acquisitions. In this sense, we are able to carry out a sensitivity analysis of the behavior of a PMU-based UFLS control scheme. Based on the proposed results, PMUs prove to be accurate ROCOF meters, as long as the harmonic and inter-harmonic distortion within the measurement pass-bandwidth is scarce. In the presence of transient events, the synchrophasor model looses its appropriateness as the signal energy spreads over the entire spectrum and cannot be approximated as a sequence of narrow-band components. Finally, we validate the actual feasibility of PMU-based UFLS in a real-time simulated scenario where we compare two different ROCOF estimation techniques with a frequency-based control scheme and we show their impact on the successful grid restoration.

Uncertainty levels in forecasting of renewable generation and demand are known to affect the amount of reserve required to operate the power grid with a given level of reliability. In this paper, we quantify the effects on the system reserve and reliability, due to the local dispatch of stochastic demand and renewable generation. The analysis is performed considering the model of the IEEE 39-bus system, with detailed dynamic models of conventional generation, wind generation, demand and an under-frequency load shedding mechanism. The analysis compares to cases: the base case, where renewable generation and demand power are stochastic and the power reserve is provided by conventional generation, against the case where the operation of traditionally stochastic resources is dispatched according to pre-established dispatch plans thanks to controlling local flexibility. Simulations reproduce the post-contingency dynamic behavior of the grid due to outages of generators. The contingencies are selected to trigger under frequency load shedding mechanisms, hence to demonstrate the different levels of system operation reliability for the two case studies. Simulation results show that dispatching traditionally stochastic generation scores better regarding to expected energy not served, producing an increase of the system reliability.
