Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViT) have been pivotal in biomedical image segmentation, yet their ability to manage long-range dependencies remains constrained by inherent locality and computational overhead. To overcome these challenges, in this technical report, we first propose xLSTM-UNet, a UNet structured deep learning neural network that leverages Vision-LSTM (xLSTM) as its backbone for medical image segmentation. xLSTM is a recently proposed as the successor of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and have demonstrated superior performance compared to Transformers and State Space Models (SSMs) like Mamba in Neural Language Processing (NLP) and image classification (as demonstrated in Vision-LSTM, or ViL implementation). Here, xLSTM-UNet we designed extend the success in biomedical image segmentation domain. By integrating the local feature extraction strengths of convolutional layers with the long-range dependency capturing abilities of xLSTM, xLSTM-UNet offers a robust solution for comprehensive image analysis. We validate the efficacy of xLSTM-UNet through experiments. Our findings demonstrate that xLSTM-UNet consistently surpasses the performance of leading CNN-based, Transformer-based, and Mamba-based segmentation networks in multiple datasets in biomedical segmentation including organs in abdomen MRI, instruments in endoscopic images, and cells in microscopic images. With comprehensive experiments performed, this technical report highlights the potential of xLSTM-based architectures in advancing biomedical image analysis in both 2D and 3D. Accurate vessel segmentation in Ultra-Wide-Field Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (UWF-SLO) images is crucial for diagnosing retinal diseases. Although recent techniques have shown encouraging outcomes in vessel segmentation, models trained on one medical dataset often underperform on others due to domain shifts. Meanwhile, manually labeling high-resolution UWF-SLO images is an extremely challenging, time-consuming and expensive task. In response, this study introduces a pioneering framework that leverages a patch-based active domain adaptation approach. By actively recommending a few valuable image patches by the devised Cascade Uncertainty-Predominance (CUP) selection strategy for labeling and model-finetuning, our method significantly improves the accuracy of UWF-SLO vessel segmentation across diverse medical centers. In addition, we annotate and construct the first Multi-center UWF-SLO Vessel Segmentation (MU-VS) dataset to promote this topic research, comprising data from multiple institutions. This dataset serves as a valuable resource for cross-center evaluation, verifying the effectiveness and robustness of our approach. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach surpasses existing domain adaptation and active learning methods, considerably reducing the gap between the Upper and Lower bounds with minimal annotations, highlighting our method's practical clinical value. Deep priors have emerged as potent methods in hyperspectral image (HSI) reconstruction. While most methods emphasize space-domain learning using image space priors like non-local similarity, frequency-domain learning using image frequency priors remains neglected, limiting the reconstruction capability of networks. In this paper, we first propose a Hyperspectral Frequency Correlation (HFC) prior rooted in in-depth statistical frequency analyses of existent HSI datasets. Leveraging the HFC prior, we subsequently establish the frequency domain learning composed of a Spectral-wise self-Attention of Frequency (SAF) and a Spectral-spatial Interaction of Frequency (SIF) targeting low-frequency and high-frequency components, respectively. The outputs of SAF and SIF are adaptively merged by a learnable gating filter, thus achieving a thorough exploitation of image frequency priors. Integrating the frequency domain learning and the existing space domain learning, we finally develop the Correlation-driven Mixing Domains Transformer (CMDT) for HSI reconstruction. Extensive experiments highlight that our method surpasses various state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods in reconstruction quality and computational efficiency.

While recent advancements in large multimodal models (LMMs) have significantly improved their abilities in image quality assessment (IQA) relying on absolute quality rating, how to transfer reliable relative quality comparison outputs to continuous perceptual quality scores remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we introduce Compare2Score-an all-around LMM-based no-reference IQA (NR-IQA) model, which is capable of producing qualitatively comparative responses and effectively translating these discrete comparative levels into a continuous quality score. Specifically, during training, we present to generate scaled-up comparative instructions by comparing images from the same IQA dataset, allowing for more flexible integration of diverse IQA datasets. Utilizing the established large-scale training corpus, we develop a human-like visual quality comparator. During inference, moving beyond binary choices, we propose a soft comparison method that calculates the likelihood of the test image being preferred over multiple predefined anchor images. The quality score is further optimized by maximum a posteriori estimation with the resulting probability matrix. Extensive experiments on nine IQA datasets validate that the Compare2Score effectively bridges text-defined comparative levels during training with converted single image quality score for inference, surpassing state-of-the-art IQA models across diverse scenarios. Moreover, we verify that the probability-matrix-based inference conversion not only improves the rating accuracy of Compare2Score but also zero-shot general-purpose LMMs, suggesting its intrinsic effectiveness.

The high penetration of renewable energy and power electronic equipment bring significant challenges to the efficient construction of adaptive emergency control strategies against various presumed contingencies in today's power systems. Traditional model-based emergency control methods have difficulty in adapt well to various complicated operating conditions in practice. Fr emerging artificial intelligence-based approaches, i.e., reinforcement learning-enabled solutions, they are yet to provide solid safety assurances under strict constraints in practical power systems. To address these research gaps, this paper develops a safe reinforcement learning (SRL)-based pre-decision making framework against short-term voltage collapse. Our proposed framework employs neural networks for pre-decision formulation, security margin estimation, and corrective action implementation, without reliance on precise system parameters. Leveraging the gradient projection, we propose a security projecting correction algorithm that offers theoretical security assurances to amend risky actions. In this paper, we study an IRS-assisted coverage enhancement problem for a given region, aiming to optimize the passive reflection of the IRS for improving the average communication performance in the region by accounting for both deterministic and random channels in the environment. To this end, we first derive the closed-form expression of the average received signal power in terms of the deterministic base station (BS)-IRS-user cascaded channels over all user locations, and propose an IRS-aided coverage enhancement framework to facilitate the estimation of such deterministic channels for IRS passive reflection design. Specifically, to avoid the exorbitant overhead of estimating the cascaded channels at all possible user locations, a location selection method is first proposed to select only a set of typical user locations for channel estimation by exploiting the channel spatial correlation in the region. To estimate the deterministic cascaded channels at the selected user locations, conventional IRS channel estimation methods require additional pilot signals, which not only results in high system training overhead but also may not be compatible with the existing communication protocols. To overcome this issue, we further propose a single-layer neural network (NN)-enabled IRS channel estimation method in this paper, based on only the average received signal power measurements at each selected location corresponding to different IRS random training reflections, which can be offline implemented in current wireless systems. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed scheme can significantly improve the coverage performance of the target region and outperform the existing power-measurement-based IRS reflection designs.

Independent component analysis (ICA) is a fundamental problem in the field of signal processing, and numerous algorithms have been developed to address this issue. The core principle of these algorithms is to find a transformation matrix that maximizes the non-Gaussianity of the separated signals. Most algorithms typically assume that the source signals are mutually independent (orthogonal to each other), thereby imposing an orthogonal constraint on the transformation matrix. However, this assumption is not always valid in practical scenarios, where the orthogonal constraint can lead to inaccurate results. Recently, tensor-based algorithms have attracted much attention due to their ability to reduce computational complexity and enhance separation performance. In these algorithms, ICA is reformulated as an eigenpair problem of a statistical tensor. Importantly, the eigenpairs of a tensor are not inherently orthogonal, making tensor-based algorithms more suitable for nonorthogonal cases. Despite this advantage, finding exact solutions to the tensor's eigenpair problem remains a challenging task. In this paper, we introduce a non-zero volume constraint and a Riemannian gradient-based algorithm to solve the tensor's eigenpair problem. The proposed algorithm can find exact solutions under nonorthogonal conditions, making it more effective for separating nonorthogonal sources. Additionally, existing tensor-based algorithms typically rely on third-order statistics and are limited to real-valued data. To overcome this limitation, we extend tensor-based algorithms to the complex domain by constructing a fourth-order statistical tensor. Experiments conducted on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The infant brain undergoes rapid development in the first few years after birth.Compared to cross-sectional studies, longitudinal studies can depict the trajectories of infants brain development with higher accuracy, statistical power and flexibility. However, the collection of infant longitudinal magnetic resonance (MR) data suffers a notorious dropout problem, resulting in incomplete datasets with missing time points. This limitation significantly impedes subsequent neuroscience and clinical modeling. Yet, existing deep generative models are facing difficulties in missing brain image completion, due to sparse data and the nonlinear, dramatic contrast/geometric variations in the develo** brain. We propose LoCI-DiffCom, a novel Longitudinal Consistency-Informed Diffusion model for infant brain image Completion, which integrates the images from preceding and subsequent time points to guide a diffusion model for generating high-fidelity missing data. Our designed LoCI module can work on highly sparse sequences, relying solely on data from two temporal points. Despite wide separation and diversity between age time points, our approach can extract individualized developmental features while ensuring context-aware consistency. Our experiments on a large infant brain MR dataset demonstrate its effectiveness with consistent performance on missing infant brain MR completion even in big gap scenarios, aiding in better delineation of early developmental trajectories.

In cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) analysis, simultaneous myocardial segmentation and T2 quantification are crucial for assessing myocardial pathologies. Existing methods often address these tasks separately, limiting their synergistic potential. To address this, we propose SQNet, a dual-task network integrating Transformer and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) components. SQNet features a T2-refine fusion decoder for quantitative analysis, leveraging global features from the Transformer, and a segmentation decoder with multiple local region supervision for enhanced accuracy. A tight coupling module aligns and fuses CNN and Transformer branch features, enabling SQNet to focus on myocardium regions. Evaluation on healthy controls (HC) and acute myocardial infarction patients (AMI) demonstrates superior segmentation dice scores (89.3/89.2) compared to state-of-the-art methods (87.7/87.9). T2 quantification yields strong linear correlations (Pearson coefficients: 0.84/0.93) with label values for HC/AMI, indicating accurate map**. Radiologist evaluations confirm SQNet's superior image quality scores (4.60/4.58 for segmentation, 4.32/4.42 for T2 quantification) over state-of-the-art methods (4.50/4.44 for segmentation, 3.59/4.37 for T2 quantification). SQNet thus offers accurate simultaneous segmentation and quantification, enhancing cardiac disease diagnosis, such as AMI.

In this paper, we propose a new wireless sensing system equipped with the movable-antenna (MA) array, which can flexibly adjust the positions of antenna elements for improving the sensing performance over conventional antenna arrays with fixed-position antennas (FPAs). First, we show that the angle estimation performance in wireless sensing is fundamentally determined by the array geometry, where the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of the mean square error (MSE) for angle of arrival (AoA) estimation is derived as a function of the antennas' positions for both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) MA arrays. Then, for the case of 1D MA array, we obtain a globally optimal solution for the MAs' positions in closed form to minimize the CRB of AoA estimation MSE. While in the case of 2D MA array, we aim to achieve the minimum of maximum (min-max) CRBs of estimation MSE for the two AoAs with respect to the horizontal and vertical axes, respectively. In particular, for the special case of circular antenna movement region, an optimal solution for the MAs' positions is derived under certain numbers of MAs and circle radii. Thereby, both the lower- and upper-bounds of the min-max CRB are obtained for the antenna movement region with arbitrary shapes. Moreover, we develop an efficient alternating optimization algorithm to obtain a locally optimal solution for MAs' positions by iteratively optimizing one between their horizontal and vertical coordinates with the other being fixed. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed 1D/2D MA arrays can significantly decrease the CRB of AoA estimation MSE as well as the actual MSE compared to conventional uniform linear arrays (ULAs)/uniform planar arrays (UPAs) with different values of uniform inter-antenna spacing.

In outlier hypothesis testing, one aims to detect outlying sequences among a given set of sequences, where most sequences are generated i.i.d. from a nominal distribution while outlying sequences (outliers) are generated i.i.d. from a different anomalous distribution. Most existing studies focus on discrete-valued sequences, where each data sample takes values in a finite set. To account for practical scenarios where data sequences usually take real values, we study outlier hypothesis testing for continuous sequences when both the nominal and anomalous distributions are \emph{unknown}. Specifically, we propose distribution free tests and prove that the probabilities of misclassification error, false reject and false alarm decay exponentially fast for three different test designs: fixed-length test, sequential test, and two-phase test. In a fixed-length test, one fixes the sample size of each observed sequence; in a sequential test, one takes a sample sequentially from each sequence per unit time until a reliable decision can be made; in a two-phase test, one adapts the sample size from two different fixed values. Remarkably, the two-phase test achieves a good balance between test design complexity and theoretical performance. We first consider the case of at most one outlier, and then generalize our results to the case with multiple outliers where the number of outliers is unknown.

Due to the ultra-dense constellation, efficient beam coverage and interference mitigation are crucial to low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems, while the conventional directional antennas and fixed-position antenna (FPA) arrays both have limited degrees of freedom (DoFs) in beamforming to adapt to the time-varying coverage requirement of terrestrial users. To address this challenge, we propose in this paper utilizing movable antenna (MA) arrays to enhance the satellite beam coverage and interference mitigation. Specifically, given the satellite orbit and the coverage requirement within a specific time interval, the antenna position vector (APV) and antenna weight vector (AWV) of the satellite-mounted MA array are jointly optimized over time to minimize the average signal leakage power to the interference area of the satellite, subject to the constraints of the minimum beamforming gain over the coverage area, the continuous movement of MAs, and the constant modulus of AWV. The corresponding continuous-time decision process for the APV and AWV is first transformed into a more tractable discrete-time optimization problem. Then, an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm is developed by iteratively optimizing the APV and AWV, where the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique is utilized to obtain locally optimal solutions during the iterations. Moreover, to further reduce the antenna movement overhead, a low-complexity MA scheme is proposed by using an optimized common APV over all time slots. Simulation results validate that the proposed MA array-aided beam coverage schemes can significantly decrease the interference leakage of the satellite compared to conventional FPA-based schemes, while the low-complexity MA scheme can achieve a performance comparable to the continuous-movement scheme.

Specifically, the transmit beamforming and the double-side antenna movement at the transceiver are jointly designed to maximize the sum-rate of all receivers under imperfect channel state information (CSI). Since the formulated problem is non-convex with highly coupled variables, conventional optimization methods cannot solve it efficiently. To address these challenges, an effective learning-based algorithm is proposed, namely heterogeneous multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG), which incorporates two agents to learn policies for beamforming and movement of MAs, respectively. Based on the offline learning under numerous imperfect CSI, the proposed heterogeneous MADDPG can output the solutions for transmit beamforming and antenna movement in real time. In this correspondence, we propose a movable antenna (MA)-aided multi-user hybrid beamforming scheme with a sub-connected structure, where multiple movable sub-arrays can independently change their positions within different local regions. To maximize the system sum rate, we jointly optimize the digital beamformer, analog beamformer, and positions of subarrays, under the constraints of unit modulus, finite movable regions, and power budget. Due to the non-concave/non-convex objective function/constraints, as well as the highly coupled variables, the formulated problem is challenging to solve. By employing fractional programming, we develop an alternating optimization framework to solve the problem via a combination of Lagrange multipliers, penalty method, and gradient descent. Numerical results reveal that the proposed MA-aided hybrid beamforming scheme significantly improves the sum rate compared to its fixed-position antenna (FPA) counterpart. Moreover, with sufficiently large movable regions, the proposed scheme with sub-connected MA arrays even outperforms the fully-connected FPA array.

The limited availability of 3D medical image datasets, due to privacy concerns and high collection or annotation costs, poses significant challenges in the field of medical imaging. While a promising alternative is the use of synthesized medical data, there are few solutions for realistic 3D medical image synthesis due to difficulties in backbone design and fewer 3D training samples compared to 2D counterparts. In this paper, we propose GEM-3D, a novel generative approach to the synthesis of 3D medical images and the enhancement of existing datasets using conditional diffusion models. Our method begins with a 2D slice, noted as the informed slice to serve the patient prior, and propagates the generation process using a 3D segmentation mask. By decomposing the 3D medical images into masks and patient prior information, GEM-3D offers a flexible yet effective solution for generating versatile 3D images from existing datasets. GEM-3D can enable dataset enhancement by combining informed slice selection and generation at random positions, along with editable mask volumes to introduce large variations in diffusion sampling. Moreover, as the informed slice contains patient-wise information, GEM-3D can also facilitate counterfactual image synthesis and dataset-level de-enhancement with desired control. Experiments on brain MRI and abdomen CT images demonstrate that GEM-3D is capable of synthesizing high-quality 3D medical images with volumetric consistency, offering a straightforward solution for dataset enhancement during inference. This work introduces a novel "Low-Res Leads the Way" (LWay) training framework, merging Supervised Pre-training with Self-supervised Learning to enhance the adaptability of SR models to real-world images. Our approach utilizes a low-resolution (LR) reconstruction network to extract degradation embeddings from LR images, merging them with super-resolved outputs for LR reconstruction. Dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an indispensable role in cardiac diagnosis. To enable fast imaging, the k-space data can be undersampled but the image reconstruction poses a great challenge of high-dimensional processing. This challenge leads to necessitate extensive training data in many deep learning reconstruction methods. This work proposes a novel and efficient approach, leveraging a dimension-reduced separable learning scheme that excels even with highly limited training data. We further integrate it with spatiotemporal priors to develop a Deep Separable Spatiotemporal Learning network (DeepSSL), which unrolls an iteration process of a reconstruction model with both temporal low-rankness and spatial sparsity. Intermediate outputs are visualized to provide insights into the network's behavior and enhance its interpretability. Early infancy is a rapid and dynamic neurodevelopmental period for behavior and neurocognition. Longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an effective tool to investigate such a crucial stage by capturing the developmental trajectories of the brain structures. However, longitudinal MRI acquisition always meets a serious data-missing problem due to participant dropout and failed scans, making longitudinal infant brain atlas construction and developmental trajectory delineation quite challenging. Thanks to the development of an AI-based generative model, neuroimage completion has become a powerful technique to retain as much available data as possible. However, current image completion methods usually suffer from inconsistency within each individual subject in the time dimension, compromising the overall quality. To solve this problem, our paper proposed a two-stage cascaded diffusion model, Cas-DiffCom, for dense and longitudinal 3D infant brain MRI completion and super-resolution. We applied our proposed method to the Baby Connectome Project (BCP) dataset. The experiment results validate that Cas-DiffCom achieves both individual consistency and high fidelity in longitudinal infant brain image completion. We further applied the generated infant brain images to two downstream tasks, brain tissue segmentation and developmental trajectory delineation, to declare its task-oriented potential in the neuroscience field.

The fusion of a low-spatial-resolution hyperspectral image (LR-HSI) with a high-spatial-resolution multispectral image (HR-MSI) has garnered increasing research interest. However, most fusion methods solely focus on the fusion algorithm itself and overlook the degradation models, which results in unsatisfactory performance in practical scenarios. To fill this gap, we propose physics-inspired degradation models (PIDM) to model the degradation of LR-HSI and HR-MSI, which comprises a spatial degradation network (SpaDN) and a spectral degradation network (SpeDN). SpaDN and SpeDN are designed based on two insights. First, we employ spatial war** and spectral modulation operations to simulate lens aberrations, thereby introducing non-uniformity into the spatial and spectral degradation processes. Second, we utilize asymmetric downsampling and parallel downsampling operations to separately reduce the spatial and spectral resolutions of the images, thus ensuring the matching of spatial and spectral degradation processes with specific physical characteristics. Once SpaDN and SpeDN are established, we adopt a self-supervised training strategy to optimize the network parameters and provide a plug-and-play solution for fusion methods. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed PIDM can boost the fusion performance of existing fusion methods in practical scenarios.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a pivotal clinical diagnostic tool, yet its extended scanning times often compromise patient comfort and image quality, especially in volumetric, temporal and quantitative scans. This review elucidates recent advances in MRI acceleration via data and physics-driven models, leveraging techniques from algorithm unrolling models, enhancement-based models, and plug-and-play models to emergent full spectrum of generative models. We also explore the synergistic integration of data models with physics-based insights, encompassing the advancements in multi-coil hardware accelerations like parallel imaging and simultaneous multi-slice imaging, and the optimization of sampling patterns. We then focus on domain-specific challenges and opportunities, including image redundancy exploitation, image integrity, evaluation metrics, data heterogeneity, and model generalization. This work also discusses potential solutions and future research directions, emphasizing the role of data harmonization, and federated learning for further improving the general applicability and performance of these methods in MRI reconstruction.

Movable antenna (MA) has emerged as a promising technology to enhance wireless communication performance by enabling the local movement of antennas at the transmitter (Tx) and/or receiver (Rx) for achieving more favorable channel conditions. As the existing studies on MA-aided wireless communications have mainly considered narrow-band transmission in flat fading channels, we investigate in this paper the MA-aided wideband communications employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in frequency-selective fading channels. Under the general multi-tap field-response channel model, the wireless channel variations in both space and frequency are characterized with different positions of the MAs. Unlike the narrow-band transmission where the optimal MA position at the Tx/Rx simply maximizes the single-tap channel amplitude, the MA position in the wideband case needs to balance the amplitudes and phases over multiple channel taps in order to maximize the OFDM transmission rate over multiple frequency subcarriers. First, we derive an upper bound on the OFDM achievable rate in closed form when the size of the Tx/Rx region for antenna movement is arbitrarily large. Next, we develop a parallel greedy ascent (PGA) algorithm to obtain locally optimal solutions to the MAs' positions for OFDM rate maximization subject to finite-size Tx/Rx regions. To reduce computational complexity, a simplified PGA algorithm is also provided to optimize the MAs' positions more efficiently. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PGA algorithms can approach the OFDM rate upper bound closely with the increase of Tx/Rx region sizes and outperform conventional systems with fixed-position antennas (FPAs) under the wideband channel setup.

Far-field speech recognition is a challenging task that conventionally uses signal processing beamforming to attack noise and interference problem. But the performance has been found usually limited due to heavy reliance on environmental assumption. In this paper, we propose a unified multichannel far-field speech recognition system that combines the neural beamforming and transformer-based Listen, Spell, Attend (LAS) speech recognition system, which extends the end-to-end speech recognition system further to include speech enhancement. Such framework is then jointly trained to optimize the final objective of interest. Specifically, factored complex linear projection (fCLP) has been adopted to form the neural beamforming. Several pooling strategies to combine look directions are then compared in order to find the optimal approach. Moreover, information of the source direction is also integrated in the beamforming to explore the usefulness of source direction as a prior, which is usually available especially in multi-modality scenario. Experiments on different microphone array geometry are conducted to evaluate the robustness against spacing variance of microphone array. Large in-house databases are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed framework and the proposed method achieve 19.26\% improvement when compared with a strong baseline.

Airway-related quantitative imaging biomarkers are crucial for examination, diagnosis, and prognosis in pulmonary diseases. However, the manual delineation of airway trees remains prohibitively time-consuming. While significant efforts have been made towards enhancing airway modelling, current public-available datasets concentrate on lung diseases with moderate morphological variations. The intricate honeycombing patterns present in the lung tissues of fibrotic lung disease patients exacerbate the challenges, often leading to various prediction errors. To address this issue, the 'Airway-Informed Quantitative CT Imaging Biomarker for Fibrotic Lung Disease 2023' (AIIB23) competition was organized in conjunction with the official 2023 International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI). The airway structures were meticulously annotated by three experienced radiologists. Competitors were encouraged to develop automatic airway segmentation models with high robustness and generalization abilities, followed by exploring the most correlated QIB of mortality prediction. A training set of 120 high-resolution computerised tomography (HRCT) scans were publicly released with expert annotations and mortality status. The online validation set incorporated 52 HRCT scans from patients with fibrotic lung disease and the offline test set included 140 cases from fibrosis and COVID-19 patients. The results have shown that the capacity of extracting airway trees from patients with fibrotic lung disease could be enhanced by introducing voxel-wise weighted general union loss and continuity loss. In addition to the competitive image biomarkers for prognosis, a strong airway-derived biomarker (Hazard ratio>1.5, p<0.0001) was revealed for survival prognostication compared with existing clinical measurements, clinician assessment and AI-based biomarkers.

Dual-Camera Compressed Hyperspectral Imaging (DCCHI) offers the capability to reconstruct 3D Hyperspectral Image (HSI) by fusing compressive and Panchromatic (PAN) image, which has shown great potential for snapshot hyperspectral imaging in practice. In this paper, we introduce a novel DCCHI reconstruction network, the Intra-Inter Similarity Exploiting Transformer (In2SET). Our key insight is to make full use of the PAN image to assist the reconstruction. To this end, we propose using the intra-similarity within the PAN image as a proxy for approximating the intra-similarity in the original HSI, thereby offering an enhanced content prior for more accurate HSI reconstruction. Furthermore, we aim to align the features from the underlying HSI with those of the PAN image, maintaining semantic consistency and introducing new contextual information for the reconstruction process. By integrating In2SET into a PAN-guided unrolling framework, our method substantially enhances the spatial-spectral fidelity and detail of the reconstructed images, providing a more comprehensive and accurate depiction of the scene. Extensive experiments conducted on both real and simulated datasets demonstrate that our approach consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in terms of reconstruction quality and computational complexity. Code will be released.

Radiation therapy is a primary and effective NasoPharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) treatment strategy. The precise delineation of Gross Tumor Volumes (GTVs) and Organs-At-Risk (OARs) is crucial in radiation treatment, directly impacting patient prognosis. Previously, the delineation of GTVs and OARs was performed by experienced radiation oncologists. Recently, deep learning has achieved promising results in many medical image segmentation tasks. However, for NPC OARs and GTVs segmentation, few public datasets are available for model development and evaluation. To alleviate this problem, the SegRap2023 challenge was organized in conjunction with MICCAI2023 and presented a large-scale benchmark for OAR and GTV segmentation with 400 Computed Tomography (CT) scans from 200 NPC patients, each with a pair of pre-aligned non-contrast and contrast-enhanced CT scans. The challenge's goal was to segment 45 OARs and 2 GTVs from the paired CT scans. In this paper, we detail the challenge and analyze the solutions of all participants. The average Dice similarity coefficient scores for all submissions ranged from 76.68\% to 86.70\%, and 70.42\% to 73.44\% for OARs and GTVs, respectively. We conclude that the segmentation of large-size OARs is well-addressed, and more efforts are needed for GTVs and small-size or thin-structure OARs. Movable antenna (MA) is a new technology with great potential to improve communication performance by enabling local movement of antennas for pursuing better channel conditions. In particular, the acquisition of complete channel state information (CSI) between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) regions is an essential problem for MA systems to reap performance gains. In this paper, we propose a general channel estimation framework for MA systems by exploiting the multi-path field response channel structure. Specifically, the angles of departure (AoDs), angles of arrival (AoAs), and complex coefficients of the multi-path components (MPCs) are jointly estimated by employing the compressed sensing method, based on multiple channel measurements at designated positions of the Tx-MA and Rx-MA. Under this framework, the Tx-MA and Rx-MA measurement positions fundamentally determine the measurement matrix for compressed sensing, of which the mutual coherence is analyzed from the perspective of Fourier transform. Moreover, two criteria for MA measurement positions are provided to guarantee the successful recovery of MPCs. Then, we propose several MA measurement position setups and compare their performance. Finally, comprehensive simulation results show that the proposed framework is able to estimate the complete CSI between the Tx and Rx regions with a high accuracy.

Conventional multi-beam forming with fixed-position antenna (FPA) arrays needs to trade-off between maximizing the beamforming gain over desired directions and minimizing the interference power over undesired directions. In this letter, we study the enhanced multi-beam forming with a linear movable-antenna (MA) array by exploiting the new degrees of freedom (DoFs) via antennas' position optimization. Specifically, we jointly optimize the antenna position vector (APV) and antenna weight vector (AWV) to maximize the minimum beamforming gain over multiple desired directions, subject to a given constraint on the maximum interference power over undesired directions. We propose an efficient alternating optimization algorithm to find a suboptimal solution by iteratively optimizing one of the APV and AWV with the other being fixed. Numerical results show that the proposed multi-beam forming design with MA arrays can significantly outperform that with the traditional FPA arrays and other benchmark schemes in terms of both beamforming gain and interference suppression.

Fetal pose estimation in 3D ultrasound (US) involves identifying a set of associated fetal anatomical landmarks. Its primary objective is to provide comprehensive information about the fetus through landmark connections, thus benefiting various critical applications, such as biometric measurements, plane localization, and fetal movement monitoring. However, accurately estimating the 3D fetal pose in US volume has several challenges, including poor image quality, limited GPU memory for tackling high dimensional data, symmetrical or ambiguous anatomical structures, and considerable variations in fetal poses. In this study, we propose a novel 3D fetal pose estimation framework (called FetusMapV2) to overcome the above challenges. Our contribution is three-fold. First, we propose a heuristic scheme that explores the complementary network structure-unconstrained and activation-unreserved GPU memory management approaches, which can enlarge the input image resolution for better results under limited GPU memory. Second, we design a novel Pair Loss to mitigate confusion caused by symmetrical and similar anatomical structures. It separates the hidden classification task from the landmark localization task and thus progressively eases model learning. Last, we propose a shape priors-based self-supervised learning by selecting the relatively stable landmarks to refine the pose online. Extensive experiments and diverse applications on a large-scale fetal US dataset including 1000 volumes with 22 landmarks per volume demonstrate that our method outperforms other strong competitors.

Most existing data-driven power system short-term voltage stability assessment (STVSA) approaches presume class-balanced input data. However, in practical applications, the occurrence of short-term voltage instability following a disturbance is minimal, leading to a significant class imbalance problem and a consequent decline in classifier performance. This work proposes a Transformer-based STVSA method to address this challenge. By utilizing the basic Transformer architecture, a stability assessment Transformer (StaaT) is developed {as a classification model to reflect the correlation between the operational states of the system and the resulting stability outcomes}. To combat the negative impact of imbalanced datasets, this work employs a conditional Wasserstein generative adversarial network with gradient penalty (CWGAN-GP) for synthetic data generation, aiding in the creation of a balanced, representative training set for the classifier. Semi-supervised clustering learning is implemented to enhance clustering quality, addressing the lack of a unified quantitative criterion for short-term voltage stability. {Numerical tests on the IEEE 39-bus test system extensively demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits robust performance under class imbalances up to 100:1 and noisy environments, and maintains consistent effectiveness even with an increased penetration of renewable energy}. Comparative results reveal that the CWGAN-GP generates more balanced datasets than traditional oversampling methods and that the StaaT outperforms other deep learning algorithms. This study presents a compelling solution for real-world STVSA applications that often face class imbalance and data noise challenges.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can bring significant performance enhancement for wireless communication systems by reconfiguring wireless channels via passive signal reflection. However, such performance improvement generally relies on the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) for IRS-associated links. Prior IRS channel estimation strategies mainly estimate IRS-cascaded channels based on the excessive pilot signals received at the users/base station (BS) with time-varying IRS reflections, which, however, are not compatible with the existing channel training/estimation protocol for cellular networks. To address this issue, we propose in this paper a new channel estimation scheme for IRS-assisted communication systems based on the received signal power measured at the user, which is practically attainable without the need of changing the current protocol. Specifically, due to the lack of signal phase information in power measurements, the autocorrelation matrix of the BS-IRS-user cascaded channel is estimated by solving equivalent matrix-rank-minimization problems. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation algorithm as well as the IRS passive reflection design based on the estimated channel autocorrelation matrix.

Integrating a low-spatial-resolution hyperspectral image (LR-HSI) with a high-spatial-resolution multispectral image (HR-MSI) is recognized as a valid method for acquiring HR-HSI. Among the current fusion approaches, the tensor ring (TR) decomposition-based method has received growing attention owing to its superior performance on preserving the spatial-spectral correlation. Furthermore, the low-rank property in some TR factors has been exploited via the matrix nuclear norm regularization along mode-2. On the other hand, the tensor nuclear norm (TNN)-based approaches have recently demonstrated to be more efficient on kee** high-dimensional low-rank structures in tensor recovery. Here, we study the low-rankness of TR factors from the TNN perspective and consider the mode-2 logarithmic TNN (LTNN) on each TR factor. A novel fusion model is proposed by incorporating this LTNN regularization and the weighted total variation which is to promote the continuity of HR-HSI in the spatial-spectral domain. Meanwhile, we have devised a highly efficient proximal alternating minimization algorithm to solve the proposed model. Recently, the mainstream practice for training low-light raw image denoising methods has shifted towards employing synthetic data. Noise modeling, which focuses on characterizing the noise distribution of real-world sensors, profoundly influences the effectiveness and practicality of synthetic data. Currently, physics-based noise modeling struggles to characterize the entire real noise distribution, while learning-based noise modeling impractically depends on paired real data. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy: learning the noise model from dark frames instead of paired real data, to break down the data dependency. Based on this strategy, we introduce an efficient physics-guided noise neural proxy (PNNP) to approximate the real-world sensor noise model. Specifically, we integrate physical priors into neural proxies and introduce three efficient techniques: physics-guided noise decoupling (PND), physics-guided proxy model (PPM), and differentiable distribution loss (DDL). PND decouples the dark frame into different components and handles different levels of noise flexibly, which reduces the complexity of noise modeling. PPM incorporates physical priors to constrain the generated noise, which promotes the accuracy of noise modeling. DDL provides explicit and reliable supervision for noise distribution, which promotes the precision of noise modeling. PNNP exhibits powerful potential in characterizing the real noise distribution. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate superior performance in practical low-light raw image denoising. The code will be available at \url{https://github.com/fenghansen/PNNP}.

When delineating lesions from medical images, a human expert can always keep in mind the anatomical structure behind the voxels. However, although high-quality (though not perfect) anatomical information can be retrieved from computed tomography (CT) scans with modern deep learning algorithms, it is still an open problem how these automatically generated organ masks can assist in addressing challenging lesion segmentation tasks, such as the segmentation of colorectal cancer (CRC). In this paper, we develop a novel Anatomy-Guided segmentation framework to exploit the auto-generated organ masks to aid CRC segmentation from CT, namely AG-CRC. First, we obtain multi-organ segmentation (MOS) masks with existing MOS models (e.g., TotalSegmentor) and further derive a more robust organ of interest (OOI) mask that may cover most of the colon-rectum and CRC voxels. Then, we propose an anatomy-guided training patch sampling strategy by optimizing a heuristic gain function that considers both the proximity of important regions (e.g., the tumor or organs of interest) and sample diversity. Third, we design a novel self-supervised learning scheme inspired by the topology of tubular organs like the colon to boost the model performance further. Finally, we employ a masked loss scheme to guide the model to focus solely on the essential learning region. We extensively evaluate the proposed method on two CRC segmentation datasets, where substantial performance improvement (5% to 9% in Dice) is achieved over current state-of-the-art medical image segmentation models, and the ablation studies further evidence the efficacy of every proposed component.

Breast lesion segmentation in ultrasound (US) videos is essential for diagnosing and treating axillary lymph node metastasis. However, the lack of a well-established and large-scale ultrasound video dataset with high-quality annotations has posed a persistent challenge for the research community. To overcome this issue, we meticulously curated a US video breast lesion segmentation dataset comprising 572 videos and 34,300 annotated frames, covering a wide range of realistic clinical scenarios. Furthermore, we propose a novel frequency and localization feature aggregation network (FLA-Net) that learns temporal features from the frequency domain and predicts additional lesion location positions to assist with breast lesion segmentation. We also devise a localization-based contrastive loss to reduce the lesion location distance between neighboring video frames within the same video and enlarge the location distances between frames from different ultrasound videos. Our experiments on our annotated dataset and two public video polyp segmentation datasets demonstrate that our proposed FLA-Net achieves state-of-the-art performance in breast lesion segmentation in US videos and video polyp segmentation while significantly reducing time and space complexity. Our model and dataset are available at https://github.com/jhl-Det/FLA-Net.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique to extend the wireless signal coverage of access point (AP) and improve the communication performance cost-effectively. In order to reduce the path-loss of the cascaded user-IRS-AP channels, the IRS-integrated AP architecture has been proposed to deploy the IRSs and the antenna array of the AP within the same antenna radome. To reduce the pilot overhead for estimating all IRS-involved channels, in this paper, we propose a novel codebook-based IRS reflection design for the IRS-integrated AP to enhance the coverage performance in a given area. In particular, the codebook consisting of a small number of codewords is designed offline by employing an efficient sector division strategy based on the azimuth angle. To ensure the performance of each sector, we optimize its corresponding codeword for IRS reflection pattern to maximize the sector-min-average-effective-channel-power (SMAECP) by applying the alternating optimization (AO) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) methods. With the designed codebook, the AP performs the IRS reflection training by sequentially applying all codewords and selects the one achieving the best communication performance for data transmission. Numerical results show that our proposed codebook design can enhance the average channel power of the whole coverage area, as compared to the system without IRS. Moreover, our proposed codebook-based IRS reflection design is shown to achieve significant performance gain over other benchmark schemes in both single-user and multi-user transmissions.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important non-invasive imaging method in clinical diagnosis. Beyond the common image structures, parametric imaging can provide the intrinsic tissue property thus could be used in quantitative evaluation. The emerging deep learning approach provides fast and accurate parameter estimation but still encounters the lack of network interpretation and enough training data. Even with a large amount of training data, the mismatch between the training and target data may introduce errors. Here, we propose one way that solely relies on the target scanned data and does not need a pre-defined training database. We provide a proof-of-concept that embeds the physical rule of MRI, the Bloch equation, into the loss of physics-informed neural network (PINN). PINN enables learning the Bloch equation, estimating the T2 parameter, and generating a series of physically synthetic data. Experimental results are conducted on phantom and cardiac imaging to demonstrate its potential in quantitative MRI.

This work presents a novel Learning Model Predictive Control (LMPC) strategy for autonomous racing at the handling limit that can iteratively explore and learn unknown dynamics in high-speed operational domains. We start from existing LMPC formulations and modify the system dynamics learning method. In particular, our approach uses a nominal, global, nonlinear, physics-based model with a local, linear, data-driven learning of the error dynamics. We conducted experiments in simulation and on 1/10th scale hardware, and deployed the proposed LMPC on a full-scale autonomous race car used in the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) with closed loop experiments at the Putnam Park Road Course in Indiana, USA. The results show that the proposed control policy exhibits improved robustness to parameter tuning and data scarcity. Incremental and safety-aware exploration toward the limit of handling and iterative learning of the vehicle dynamics in high-speed domains is observed both in simulations and experiments.

One main challenge for implementing intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided communications lies in the difficulty to obtain the channel knowledge for the base station (BS)-IRS-user cascaded links, which is needed to design high-performance IRS reflection in practice. Traditional methods for estimating IRS cascaded channels are usually based on the additional pilot signals received at the BS/users, which increase the system training overhead and also may not be compatible with the current communication protocols. To tackle this challenge, we propose in this paper a new single-layer neural network (NN)-enabled IRS channel estimation method based on only the knowledge of users' individual received signal power measurements corresponding to different IRS random training reflections, which are easily accessible in current wireless systems. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation method, we design the IRS reflection for data transmission based on the estimated cascaded channels in an IRS-aided multiuser communication system. Numerical results show that the proposed IRS channel estimation and reflection design can significantly improve the minimum received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) among all users, as compared to existing power measurement based designs.

While multi-modal learning has been widely used for MRI reconstruction, it relies on paired multi-modal data which is difficult to acquire in real clinical scenarios. Especially in the federated setting, the common situation is that several medical institutions only have single-modal data, termed the modality missing issue. Therefore, it is infeasible to deploy a standard federated learning framework in such conditions. In this paper, we propose a novel communication-efficient federated learning framework, namely Fed-PMG, to address the missing modality challenge in federated multi-modal MRI reconstruction. Specifically, we utilize a pseudo modality generation mechanism to recover the missing modality for each single-modal client by sharing the distribution information of the amplitude spectrum in frequency space. However, the step of sharing the original amplitude spectrum leads to heavy communication costs. To reduce the communication cost, we introduce a clustering scheme to project the set of amplitude spectrum into finite cluster centroids, and share them among the clients. With such an elaborate design, our approach can effectively complete the missing modality within an acceptable communication cost. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method can attain similar performance with the ideal scenario, i.e., all clients have the full set of modalities. The source code will be released.

Movable antenna (MA) is an emerging technology which enables a local movement of the antenna in the transmitter/receiver region for improving the channel condition and communication performance. In this paper, we study the deployment of multiple MAs at the base station (BS) for enhancing the multiuser communication performance. First, we model the multiuser channel in the uplink to characterize the wireless channel variation due to MAs' movements at the BS. Then, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the minimum achievable rate among multiple users for MA-aided uplink multiuser communications by jointly optimizing the MAs' positions, their receive combining at the BS, and the transmit power of users, under the constraints of finite moving region for MAs, minimum inter-MA distance, and maximum transmit power of each user. To solve this challenging non-convex optimization problem, a two-loop iterative algorithm is proposed by leveraging the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. Specifically, the outer-loop updates the positions of a set of particles, where each particle's position represents one realization of the antenna position vector (APV) of all MAs. The inner-loop implements the fitness evaluation for each particle in terms of the max-min achievable rate of multiple users with its corresponding APV, where the receive combining matrix of the BS and the transmit power of each user are optimized by applying the block coordinate descent (BCD) technique. Simulation results show that the antenna position optimization for MAs-aided BSs can significantly improve the rate performance as compared to conventional BSs with fixed-position antennas (FPAs).

Conventional beamforming with fixed-position antenna (FPA) arrays has a fundamental trade-off between maximizing the signal power (array gain) over a desired direction and simultaneously minimizing the interference power over undesired directions. To overcome this limitation, this letter investigates the movable antenna (MA) array enhanced beamforming by exploiting the new degree of freedom (DoF) via antenna position optimization, in addition to the design of antenna weights. We show that by jointly optimizing the antenna positions vector (APV) and antenna weights vector (AWV) of a linear MA array, the full array gain can be achieved over the desired direction while null steering can be realized over all undesired directions, under certain numbers of MAs and null-steering directions. The optimal solutions for AWV and APV are derived in closed form, which reveal that the optimal AWV for MA arrays requires only the signal phase adjustment with a fixed amplitude. Numerical results validate our analytical solutions for MA array beamforming and show their superior performance to the conventional beamforming techniques with FPA arrays.

Spike camera is a new type of bio-inspired vision sensor that records light intensity in the form of a spike array with high temporal resolution (20,000 Hz). This new paradigm of vision sensor offers significant advantages for many vision tasks such as high speed image reconstruction. However, existing spike-based approaches typically assume that the scenes are with sufficient light intensity, which is usually unavailable in many real-world scenarios such as rainy days or dusk scenes. To unlock more spike-based application scenarios, we propose a Recurrent Spike-based Image Restoration (RSIR) network, which is the first work towards restoring clear images from spike arrays under general illumination. Specifically, to accurately describe the noise distribution under different illuminations, we build a physical-based spike noise model according to the sampling process of the spike camera. Based on the noise model, we design our RSIR network which consists of an adaptive spike transformation module, a recurrent temporal feature fusion module, and a frequency-based spike denoising module. Our RSIR can process the spike array in a recursive manner to ensure that the spike temporal information is well utilized. In the training process, we generate the simulated spike data based on our noise model to train our network. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets with different illuminations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed network. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely used radiological modality renowned for its radiation-free, comprehensive insights into the human body, facilitating medical diagnoses. However, the drawback of prolonged scan times hinders its accessibility. The k-space undersampling offers a solution, yet the resultant artifacts necessitate meticulous removal during image reconstruction. Although Deep Learning (DL) has proven effective for fast MRI image reconstruction, its broader applicability across various imaging scenarios has been constrained. Challenges include the high cost and privacy restrictions associated with acquiring large-scale, diverse training data, coupled with the inherent difficulty of addressing mismatches between training and target data in existing DL methodologies. Here, we present a novel Physics-Informed Synthetic data learning framework for Fast MRI, called PISF. PISF marks a breakthrough by enabling generalized DL for multi-scenario MRI reconstruction through a single trained model. Our approach separates the reconstruction of a 2D image into many 1D basic problems, commencing with 1D data synthesis to facilitate generalization. We demonstrate that training DL models on synthetic data, coupled with enhanced learning techniques, yields in vivo MRI reconstructions comparable to or surpassing those of models trained on matched realistic datasets, reducing the reliance on real-world MRI data by up to 96%. Additionally, PISF exhibits remarkable generalizability across multiple vendors and imaging centers. Its adaptability to diverse patient populations has been validated through evaluations by ten experienced medical professionals. PISF presents a feasible and cost-effective way to significantly boost the widespread adoption of DL in various fast MRI applications.

Cross-modality medical image synthesis is a critical topic and has the potential to facilitate numerous applications in the medical imaging field. Despite recent successes in deep-learning-based generative models, most current medical image synthesis methods rely on generative adversarial networks and suffer from notorious mode collapse and unstable training. Moreover, the 2D backbone-driven approaches would easily result in volumetric inconsistency, while 3D backbones are challenging and impractical due to the tremendous memory cost and training difficulty. In this paper, we introduce a new paradigm for volumetric medical data synthesis by leveraging 2D backbones and present a diffusion-based framework, Make-A-Volume, for cross-modality 3D medical image synthesis. To learn the cross-modality slice-wise map**, we employ a latent diffusion model and learn a low-dimensional latent space, resulting in high computational efficiency. To enable the 3D image synthesis and mitigate volumetric inconsistency, we further insert a series of volumetric layers in the 2D slice-map** model and fine-tune them with paired 3D data. This paradigm extends the 2D image diffusion model to a volumetric version with a slightly increasing number of parameters and computation, offering a principled solution for generic cross-modality 3D medical image synthesis. We showcase the effectiveness of our Make-A-Volume framework on an in-house SWI-MRA brain MRI dataset and a public T1-T2 brain MRI dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework achieves superior synthesis results with volumetric consistency.

Rotation group $\mathcal{SO}(d)$ synchronization is an important inverse problem and has attracted intense attention from numerous application fields such as graph realization, computer vision, and robotics. In this paper, we focus on the least-squares estimator of rotation group synchronization with general additive noise models, which is a nonconvex optimization problem with manifold constraints. Unlike the phase/orthogonal group synchronization, there are limited provable approaches for solving rotation group synchronization. First, we derive improved estimation results of the least-squares/spectral estimator, illustrating the tightness and validating the existing relaxation methods of solving rotation group synchronization through the optimum of relaxed orthogonal group version under near-optimal noise level for exact recovery. Moreover, departing from the standard approach of utilizing the geometry of the ambient Euclidean space, we adopt an intrinsic Riemannian approach to study orthogonal/rotation group synchronization. Benefiting from a quotient geometric view, we prove the positive definite condition of quotient Riemannian Hessian around the optimum of orthogonal group synchronization problem, and consequently the Riemannian local error bound property is established to analyze the convergence rate properties of various Riemannian algorithms. As a simple and feasible method, the sequential convergence guarantee of the (quotient) Riemannian gradient method for solving orthogonal/rotation group synchronization problem is studied, and we derive its global linear convergence rate to the optimum with the spectral initialization. All results are deterministic without any probabilistic model.
