Nash equilibrium is a common solution concept that captures the strategic interaction in electricity market analysis. However, it requires a fundamental but impractical assumption that all market participants are fully rational, which implies unlimited computational resources and cognitive abilities. To tackle the limitation, level-k reasoning is proposed and studied to model the bounded rational behaviors. In this paper, we consider a Cournot competition in electricity markets with two suppliers both following level-k reasoning. One is a self-interested firm and the other serves as a benevolent social planner. First, we observe that the optimal strategy of the social planner is to be of a particular rationality level. Being less or more rational may both result in reduced social welfare. Then, we investigate the effect of bounded rationality on social welfare performance and find that it could largely deviate from that at the Nash equilibrium point. Finally, we characterize optimal, mean maximizing and max-min strategies for the benevolent social planner, when having access to different information. The numerical experiments further demonstrate and validate our findings.

With the rapid growth in the demand for plug-in electric vehicles (EVs), the corresponding charging infrastructures are expanding. These charging stations are located at various places and with different congestion levels. EV drivers face an important decision in choosing which charging station to go to in order to reduce their overall time costs. However, existing literature either assumes a flat charging rate and hence overlooks the physical characteristics of an EV battery where charging rate is typically reduced as the battery charges, or ignores the effect of other drivers on an EV's decision making process. In this paper, we consider both the predetermined exogenous wait cost and the endogenous congestion induced by other drivers' strategic decisions, and propose a differential equation based approach to find the optimal strategies. We analytically characterize the equilibrium strategies and find that co-located EVs may make different decisions depending on the charging rate and/or remaining battery levels. Through numerical experiments, we investigate the impact of charging rate characteristics, modeling parameters and the consideration of endogenous congestion levels on the optimal charging decisions. Finally, we conduct numerical studies on real-world data and find that some EV users with slower charging rates may benefit from the participation of fast-charging EVs.

To enable intelligent and self-driving optical networks, high-accuracy physical layer models are required. The dynamic wavelength-dependent gain effects of non-constant-pump erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) remain a crucial problem in terms of modeling, as it determines optical-to-signal noise ratio as well as the magnitude of fiber nonlinearities. Black-box data-driven models have been widely studied, but it requires a large size of data for training and suffers from poor generalizability. In this paper, we derive the gain spectra of EDFAs as a simple univariable linear function, and then based on it we propose a grey-box EDFA gain modeling scheme. Experimental results show that for both automatic gain control (AGC) and automatic power control (APC) EDFAs, our model built with 8 data samples can achieve better performance than the neural network (NN) based model built with 900 data samples, which means the required data size for modeling can be reduced by at least two orders of magnitude. Moreover, in the experiment the proposed model demonstrates superior generalizability to unseen scenarios since it is based on the underlying physics of EDFAs. The results indicate that building a customized digital twin of each EDFA in optical networks become feasible, which is essential especially for next generation multi-band network operations.

We propose AccoMontage2, a system capable of doing full-length song harmonization and accompaniment arrangement based on a lead melody. Following AccoMontage, this study focuses on generating piano arrangements for popular/folk songs and it carries on the generalized template-based retrieval method. The novelties of this study are twofold. First, we invent a harmonization module (which AccoMontage does not have). This module generates structured and coherent full-length chord progression by optimizing and balancing three loss terms: a micro-level loss for note-wise dissonance, a meso-level loss for phrase-template matching, and a macro-level loss for full piece coherency. Second, we develop a graphical user interface which allows users to select different styles of chord progression and piano texture. Currently, chord progression styles include Pop, R&B, and Dark, while piano texture styles include several levels of voicing density and rhythmic complexity. Experimental results show that both our harmonization and arrangement results significantly outperform the baselines. Lastly, we release AccoMontage2 as an online application as well as the organized chord progression templates as a public dataset.

In-utero fetal MRI is emerging as an important tool in the diagnosis and analysis of the develo** human brain. Automatic segmentation of the develo** fetal brain is a vital step in the quantitative analysis of prenatal neurodevelopment both in the research and clinical context. However, manual segmentation of cerebral structures is time-consuming and prone to error and inter-observer variability. Therefore, we organized the Fetal Tissue Annotation (FeTA) Challenge in 2021 in order to encourage the development of automatic segmentation algorithms on an international level. The challenge utilized FeTA Dataset, an open dataset of fetal brain MRI reconstructions segmented into seven different tissues (external cerebrospinal fluid, grey matter, white matter, ventricles, cerebellum, brainstem, deep grey matter). 20 international teams participated in this challenge, submitting a total of 21 algorithms for evaluation. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of the results from both a technical and clinical perspective. All participants relied on deep learning methods, mainly U-Nets, with some variability present in the network architecture, optimization, and image pre- and post-processing. The majority of teams used existing medical imaging deep learning frameworks. The main differences between the submissions were the fine tuning done during training, and the specific pre- and post-processing steps performed. The challenge results showed that almost all submissions performed similarly. Four of the top five teams used ensemble learning methods. However, one team's algorithm performed significantly superior to the other submissions, and consisted of an asymmetrical U-Net network architecture. This paper provides a first of its kind benchmark for future automatic multi-tissue segmentation algorithms for the develo** human brain in utero.

The modeling of optical wave propagation in optical fiber is a task of fast and accurate solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), and can enable the optical system design, digital signal processing verification and fast waveform calculation. Traditional waveform modeling of full-time and full-frequency information is the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), which has long been regarded as challenging in long-haul wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber communication systems because it is extremely time-consuming. Here we propose a linear-nonlinear feature decoupling distributed (FDD) waveform modeling scheme to model long-haul WDM fiber channel, where the channel linear effects are modelled by the NLSE-derived model-driven methods and the nonlinear effects are modelled by the data-driven deep learning methods. Meanwhile, the proposed scheme only focuses on one-span fiber distance fitting, and then recursively transmits the model to achieve the required transmission distance. The proposed modeling scheme is demonstrated to have high accuracy, high computing speeds, and robust generalization abilities for different optical launch powers, modulation formats, channel numbers and transmission distances. The total running time of FDD waveform modeling scheme for 41-channel 1040-km fiber transmission is only 3 minutes versus more than 2 hours using SSFM for each input condition, which achieves a 98% reduction in computing time. Considering the multi-round optimization by adjusting system parameters, the complexity reduction is significant. The results represent a remarkable improvement in nonlinear fiber modeling and open up novel perspectives for solution of NLSE-like partial differential equations and optical fiber physics problems.

In this paper, we propose a scheme that utilizes the optimization ability of artificial intelligence (AI) for optimal transceiver-joint equalization in compensating for the optical filtering impairments caused by wavelength selective switches (WSS). In contrast to adding or replacing a certain module of existing digital signal processing (DSP), we exploit the similarity between a communication system and a neural network (NN). By map** a communication system to an NN, in which the equalization modules correspond to the convolutional layers and other modules can been regarded as static layers, the optimal transceiver-joint equalization coefficients can be obtained. In particular, the DSP structure of the communication system is not changed. Extensive numerical simulations are performed to validate the performance of the proposed method. For a 65 GBaud 16QAM signal, it can achieve a 0.76 dB gain when the number of WSSs is 16 with a -6 dB bandwidth of 73 GHz.

For further improving the capacity and reliability of optical networks, a closed-loop autonomous architecture is preferred. Considering a large number of optical components in an optical network and many digital signal processing modules in each optical transceiver, massive real-time data can be collected. However, for a traditional monitoring structure, collecting, storing and processing a large size of data are challenging tasks. Moreover, strong correlations and similarities between data from different sources and regions are not properly considered, which may limit function extension and accuracy improvement. To address abovementioned issues, a data-fusion-assisted telemetry layer between the physical layer and control layer is proposed in this paper. The data fusion methodologies are elaborated on three different levels: Source Level, Space Level and Model Level. For each level, various data fusion algorithms are introduced and relevant works are reviewed. In addition, proof-of-concept use cases for each level are provided through simulations, where the benefits of the data-fusion-assisted telemetry layer are shown.

In this paper, we examine the long-neglected yet important effects of point sampling patterns in point cloud GANs. Through extensive experiments, we show that sampling-insensitive discriminators (e.g.PointNet-Max) produce shape point clouds with point clustering artifacts while sampling-oversensitive discriminators (e.g.PointNet++, DGCNN) fail to guide valid shape generation. We propose the concept of sampling spectrum to depict the different sampling sensitivities of discriminators. We further study how different evaluation metrics weigh the sampling pattern against the geometry and propose several perceptual metrics forming a sampling spectrum of metrics. Guided by the proposed sampling spectrum, we discover a middle-point sampling-aware baseline discriminator, PointNet-Mix, which improves all existing point cloud generators by a large margin on sampling-related metrics. We point out that, though recent research has been focused on the generator design, the main bottleneck of point cloud GAN actually lies in the discriminator design. Our work provides both suggestions and tools for building future discriminators. We will release the code to facilitate future research.

In this work, a new data-driven fiber channel modeling method, generative adversarial network (GAN) is investigated to learn the distribution of fiber channel transfer function. Our investigation focuses on joint channel effects of attenuation, chromic dispersion, self-phase modulation (SPM), and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. To achieve the success of GAN for channel modeling, we modify the loss function, design the condition vector of input and address the mode collapse for the long-haul transmission. The effective architecture, parameters, and training skills of GAN are also displayed in the paper. The results show that the proposed method can learn the accurate transfer function of the fiber channel. The transmission distance of modeling can be up to 1000 km and can be extended to arbitrary distance theoretically. Moreover, GAN shows robust generalization abilities under different optical launch powers, modulation formats, and input signal distributions. Comparing the complexity of GAN with the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), the total multiplication number is only 2% of SSFM and the running time is less than 0.1 seconds for 1000-km transmission, versus 400 seconds using the SSFM under the same hardware and software conditions, which highlights the remarkable reduction in complexity of the fiber channel modeling.

We show that combining vibrational spectroscopy with signal processing can result in a scheme for ultrasensitive detection of molecules. We consider the vibrational spectrum as a signal on the energy axis and apply a matched filter on that axis. On the example of a nerve agent molecule, we show that this allows detecting a molecule by its vibrational spectrum even when the recorded spectrum is completely buried in noise, when conventional spectroscopic detection is impossible. Detection is predicted to be possible with signal-to-noise ratios in recorded spectra as low as 0.1. We study the importance of spectral range used for detection as well as of the quality of the computed spectrum used to program the filter, specifically, the role of anharmonicity, of the exchange correlation functional, and of the basis set. The use of the full spectral range rather than of a narrow spectral window with key vibrations is shown to be advantageous, as well as accounting for anharmonicity.
