The efforts on the development, standardization and improvements to communication systems towards 5G Advanced and 6G are on track to provide benefits such as an unprecedented level of connectivity and performance, enabling a diverse range of vertical services. The full integration of non-terrestrial components into 6G plays a pivotal role in realizing this paradigm shift towards ubiquitous communication and global coverage. However, this integration into 6G brings forth a set of its own challenges, particularly in Radio Access Technologies (RATs). To this end, this paper comprehensively discusses those challenges at different levels of RATs and proposes the corresponding potential emerging advancements in the realm of 6G NTN. In particular, the focus is on advancing the prospective aspects of Radio Resource Management (RRM), spectral coexistence in terrestrial and non-terrestrial components and flexible waveform design solutions to combat the impediments. This discussion with a specific focus on emerging advancements in 6G NTN RATs is critical for sha** the next generation networks and potentially relevant in contributing the part in standardization in forthcoming releases

By effectively implementing the strategies for resource allocation, the capabilities, and reliability of non-terrestrial networks (NTN) can be enhanced. This leads to enhance spectrum utilization performance while minimizing the unmet system capacity, meeting quality of service (QoS) requirements and overall system optimization. In turn, a wide range of applications and services in various domains can be supported. However, allocating resources in a multi-constellation system with heterogeneous satellite links and highly dynamic user traffic demand pose challenges in ensuring sufficient and fair resource distribution. To mitigate these complexities and minimize the overhead, there is a growing shift towards utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for its ability to handle such problems effectively. This calls for the development of an intelligent decision-making controller using AI to efficiently manage resources in this complex environment. In this context, real-world open datasets play a pivotal role in the development of AI models addressing radio control optimization problems. As a matter of fact, acquiring suitable datasets can be arduous. Therefore, this paper identifies pertinent real-world open datasets representing realistic traffic pattern, network performances and demand for fixed and dynamic user terminals, enabling a variety of uses cases. The aim of gathering and publishing the information of these datasets are to inspire and assist the research community in crafting the advance resource management solutions. In a nutshell, this paper establishes a solid foundation of commercially accessible data, with the potential to set benchmarks and accelerate the resolution of resource allocation optimization challenges.

Modern satellites deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO) accommodate processing payloads that can be exploited for edge computing. Furthermore, by implementing inter-satellite links, the LEO satellites in a constellation can route the data end-to-end (E2E). These capabilities can be exploited to greatly improve the current store-and-forward approaches in Earth surveillance systems. However, they give rise to an NP-hard problem of joint communication and edge computing resource management (RM). In this paper, we propose an algorithm that allows the satellites to select between computing the tasks at the edge or at a cloud server and to allocate an adequate power for communication. The overall objective is to minimize the energy consumption at the satellites while fulfilling specific service E2E latency constraints for the computing tasks. Experimental results show that our algorithm achieves energy savings of up to 18% when compared to the selected benchmarks with either 1) fixed edge computing decisions or 2) maximum power allocation.

Upcoming modern communications are based on 5G specifications and aim at providing solutions for novel vertical industries. One of the major changes of the physical layer is the use of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) code for channel coding. Although LDPC codes introduce additional computational complexity compared with the previous generation, where Turbocodes where used, LDPC codes provide a reasonable trade-off in terms of complexity-Bit Error Rate (BER). In parallel to this, Deep Learning algorithms are experiencing a new revolution, specially to image and video processing. In this context, there are some approaches that can be exploited in radio communications. In this paper we propose to use Autoencoding Neural Networks (ANN) jointly with a Deep Neural Network (DNN) to construct Autoencoding Deep Neural Networks (ADNN) for demap** and decoding. The results will unveil that, for a particular BER target, $3$ dB less of Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) is required, in Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels.

Interference Management is a vast topic present in many disciplines. The majority of wireless standards suffer the drawback of interference intrusion and the network efficiency drop due to that. Traditionally, interference management has been addressed by proposing signal processing techniques that minimize their effects locally. However, the fast evolution of future communications makes difficult to adapt to new era. In this paper we propose the use of Deep Learning techniques to present a compact system for interference management. In particular, we describe two subsystems capable to detect the presence of interference, even in high Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR), and interference classification in several radio standards. Finally, we present results based on real signals captured from terrestrial and satellite networks and the conclusions unveil the courageous future of AI and wireless communications.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes are being considered in 5G new radio developments and beyond. Although seminal papers demonstrated that NOMA outperforms orthogonal access in terms of capacity and user fairness, the majority of works have been devoted to the wireless terrestrial arena. Therefore, it is worth to study how NOMA can be implemented in other types of communications, as for instance the satellite ones, which are also part of the 5G infrastructure. Although communications through a satellite present a different architecture than those in the wireless terrestrial links, NOMA can be an important asset to improve their performance. This article introduces a general overview of how NOMA can be applied to this different architecture. A novel taxonomy is presented based on different multibeam transmission schemes and guidelines that open new avenues for research in this topic are provided.

SatNEx IV project aims at studying medium and long term directions of satellite telecommunication systems for any of the commercial or institutional applications that can be considered appealing by key players although still not mature enough for attracting industry or initiating dedicated ESA R&D activities. This paper summarizes the first year activities identified as very promising techniques for next generation satellite communication systems. Concretely, very high throughput satellite trunking, physical layer advances for full-duplex and multipolarization systems, network coding applications and multiple access schemes for information centric networking are briefly presented. For all the activities, we identify the scenarios under study so as the preliminary technical solutions to be further investigated.
