Cyber-physical power systems, such as grids, integrate computational and communication components with physical systems to introduce novel functions and improve resilience and fault tolerance. These systems employ computational components and real-time controllers to meet power demands. Microgrids, comprising interconnected components, energy resources within defined electrical boundaries, computational elements, and controllers, offer a solution for integrating renewable energy sources and ensuring resilience in electricity demand. Simulating these cyber-physical systems (CPS) is vital for grid design, as it facilitates the modeling and control of both continuous physical processes and discrete-time power converters and controllers. This paper presents a model-based design tool for simulating cyber-physical power systems, including microgrids, using SystemC-AMS. The adoption of SystemC-AMS enables physical modeling with both native components from the SystemC-AMS library and user-defined computational elements. We observe that SystemC-AMS can accurately produce the electromagnetic transient responses essential for analyzing grid stability. Additionally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of SystemC-AMS through use cases that simulate grid-following inverters. Comparing the SystemC-AMS implementation to one in Simulink reveals that SystemC-AMS offers a more rapid simulation. A design tool like this could support microgrid designers in making informed decisions about the selection of microgrid components prior to installation and deployment.

Essential to various practical applications of lithium-ion batteries is the availability of accurate equivalent circuit models. This paper presents a new coupled electro-thermal model for batteries and studies how to extract it from data. We consider the problem of maximum likelihood parameter estimation, which, however, is nontrivial to solve as the model is nonlinear in both its dynamics and measurement. We propose to leverage the Bayesian optimization approach, owing to its machine learning-driven capability in handling complex optimization problems and searching for global optima. To enhance the parameter search efficiency, we dynamically narrow and refine the search space in Bayesian optimization. The proposed system identification approach can efficiently determine the parameters of the coupled electro-thermal model. It is amenable to practical implementation, with few requirements on the experiment, data types, and optimization setups, and well applicable to many other battery models.

Lithium-ion batteries have found their way into myriad sectors of industry to drive electrification, decarbonization, and sustainability. A crucial aspect in ensuring their safe and optimal performance is monitoring their energy state. In this paper, we present the first study on predicting the remaining energy of a battery cell undergoing discharge over wide current ranges from low to high C-rates. The complexity of the challenge arises from the cell's C-rate-dependent energy availability as well as its intricate electro-thermal dynamics. To address this, we introduce a new definition of remaining discharge energy and then undertake a systematic effort in harnessing the power of machine learning to enable its prediction. Our effort includes two parts in cascade. First, we develop an accurate dynamic model based on integration of physics with machine learning to capture a battery's voltage and temperature behaviors. Second, based on the model, we propose a machine learning approach to predict the remaining discharge energy under arbitrary C-rates and pre-specified cut-off limits in voltage and temperature. The results from our experiments show that the proposed approach offers high prediction accuracy and amenability to training and computation.

This paper presents an integrated control strategy for fast charging and active thermal management of Lithium-ion batteries in extreme ambient temperatures. A control-oriented thermal-NDC (nonlinear double-capacitor) battery model is proposed to describe the electrical and thermal dynamics, accounting for the impact from both an active thermal source and ambient temperature. A state-feedback model predictive control algorithm is then developed for integrated fast charging and active thermal management. Numerical experiments validate the algorithm under extreme temperatures, showing that the proposed algorithm can energy-efficiently adjust the battery temperature to enhance fast charging. Additionally, an output-feedback model predictive control algorithm with an extended Kalman filter is proposed for battery charging when states are partially measurable. Numerical experiments validate the effectiveness under extreme temperatures.

Automatic segmentation of curvilinear objects in medical images plays an important role in the diagnosis and evaluation of human diseases, yet it is a challenging uncertainty in the complex segmentation tasks due to different issues such as various image appearances, low contrast between curvilinear objects and their surrounding backgrounds, thin and uneven curvilinear structures, and improper background illumination conditions. To overcome these challenges, we present a unique curvilinear structure segmentation framework based on an oriented derivative of stick (ODoS) filter and a deep learning network for curvilinear object segmentation in medical images. Currently, a large number of deep learning models emphasize develo** deep architectures and ignore capturing the structural features of curvilinear objects, which may lead to unsatisfactory results. Consequently, a new approach that incorporates an ODoS filter as part of a deep learning network is presented to improve the spatial attention of curvilinear objects. Specifically, the input image is transfered into four-channel image constructed by the ODoS filter. In which, the original image is considered the principal part to describe various image appearance and complex background illumination conditions, a multi-step strategy is used to enhance the contrast between curvilinear objects and their surrounding backgrounds, and a vector field is applied to discriminate thin and uneven curvilinear structures. Subsequently, a deep learning framework is employed to extract various structural features for curvilinear object segmentation in medical images. The performance of the computational model is validated in experiments conducted on the publicly available DRIVE, STARE and CHASEDB1 datasets. The experimental results indicate that the presented model yields surprising results compared with those of some state-of-the-art methods.

Virtual inertia is an effective control approach to attenuate sudden voltage changes during transient events in low-inertia DC grids. While methods have been proposed to implement virtual inertia, its impact on DC grid stability in the presence of constant power loads (CPLs) remains unclear. In this paper, we perform a rigorous stability analysis for DC grids with CPLs powered by virtual-inertia-enhanced converters. We derive a closed-form stability criterion that can be used to evaluate the impact of virtual inertia on the system stability, and demonstrate that, given a set of system parameters, the stability of a DC grid powering CPLs can be improved for a range of virtual inertia designs. We provide analytical expressions for the optimal virtual inertia that improves stability and for the maximum virtual inertia that does not deteriorate stability. In addition, we present a step-by-step guideline to design a stable DC grid with virtual inertia. Test results are presented to validate the analysis.

The calculation of a three-dimensional underwater acoustic field has always been a key problem in computational ocean acoustics. Traditionally, this solution is usually obtained by directly solving the acoustic Helmholtz equation using a finite difference or finite element algorithm. Solving the three-dimensional Helmholtz equation directly is computationally expensive. For quasi-three-dimensional problems, the Helmholtz equation can be processed by the integral transformation approach, which can greatly reduce the computational cost. In this paper, a numerical algorithm for a quasi-three-dimensional sound field that combines an integral transformation technique, stepwise coupled modes and a spectral method is designed. The quasi-three-dimensional problem is transformed into a two-dimensional problem using an integral transformation strategy. A stepwise approximation is then used to discretize the range dependence of the two-dimensional problem; this approximation is essentially a physical discretization that further reduces the range-dependent two-dimensional problem to a one-dimensional problem. Finally, the Chebyshev--Tau spectral method is employed to accurately solve the one-dimensional problem. We provide the corresponding numerical program SPEC3D for the proposed algorithm and describe several representative numerical examples. In the numerical experiments, the consistency between SPEC3D and the analytical solution/high-precision finite difference program COACH verifies the reliability and capability of the proposed algorithm. A comparison of running times illustrates that the algorithm proposed in this paper is significantly faster than the full three-dimensional algorithm in terms of computational speed.

Priori knowledge of pulmonary anatomy plays a vital role in diagnosis of lung diseases. In CT images, pulmonary fissure segmentation is a formidable mission due to various of factors. To address the challenge, an useful approach based on ODoS filter and shape features is presented for pulmonary fissure segmentation. Here, we adopt an ODoS filter by merging the orientation information and magnitude information to highlight structure features for fissure enhancement, which can effectively distinguish between pulmonary fissures and clutters. Motivated by the fact that pulmonary fissures appear as linear structures in 2D space and planar structures in 3D space in orientation field, an orientation curvature criterion and an orientation partition scheme are fused to separate fissure patches and other structures in different orientation partition, which can suppress parts of clutters. Considering the shape difference between pulmonary fissures and tubular structures in magnitude field, a shape measure approach and a 3D skeletonization model are combined to segment pulmonary fissures for clutters removal. When applying our scheme to 55 chest CT scans which acquired from a publicly available LOLA11 datasets, the median F1-score, False Discovery Rate (FDR), and False Negative Rate (FNR) respectively are 0.896, 0.109, and 0.100, which indicates that the presented method has a satisfactory pulmonary fissure segmentation performance.

Mathematical modeling of lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) is a primary challenge in advanced battery management. This paper proposes two new frameworks to integrate physics-based models with machine learning to achieve high-precision modeling for LiBs. The frameworks are characterized by informing the machine learning model of the state information of the physical model, enabling a deep integration between physics and machine learning. Based on the frameworks, a series of hybrid models are constructed, through combining an electrochemical model and an equivalent circuit model, respectively, with a feedforward neural network. The hybrid models are relatively parsimonious in structure and can provide considerable voltage predictive accuracy under a broad range of C-rates, as shown by extensive simulations and experiments. The study further expands to conduct aging-aware hybrid modeling, leading to the design of a hybrid model conscious of the state-of-health to make prediction. The experiments show that the model has high voltage predictive accuracy throughout a LiB's cycle life.

This work considers the multihop multiple-input multiple-output relay network under short-packet communications to facilitate not only ultra-reliability but also low-latency communications. We assume that the transmit antenna selection (TAS) scheme is utilized at the transmit side, whereas either selection combining (SC) or maximum ratio combining (MRC) is leveraged at the receive side to achieve diversity gains. For quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels and the finite-blocklength regime, we derive the approximate closed-form expressions of the end-to-end (e2e) block error rate (BLER) for both the TAS/MRC and TAS/SC schemes. The asymptotic performance in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime is derived, from which the comparison of TAS/MRC and TAS/SC schemes in terms of the diversity order, e2e BLER loss, and SNR gap is provided. The e2e latency and throughputs are also analyzed for the considered schemes. The correctness of our analysis is confirmed via Monte Carlo simulations.

Background: The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been spread widely in the world, causing a huge threat to people's living environment. Objective: Under computed tomography (CT) imaging, the structure features of COVID-19 lesions are complicated and varied greatly in different cases. To accurately locate COVID-19 lesions and assist doctors to make the best diagnosis and treatment plan, a deep-supervised ensemble learning network is presented for COVID-19 lesion segmentation in CT images. Methods: Considering the fact that a large number of COVID-19 CT images and the corresponding lesion annotations are difficult to obtained, a transfer learning strategy is employed to make up for the shortcoming and alleviate the overfitting problem. Based on the reality that traditional single deep learning framework is difficult to extract COVID-19 lesion features effectively, which may cause some lesions to be undetected. To overcome the problem, a deep-supervised ensemble learning network is presented to combine with local and global features for COVID-19 lesion segmentation. Results: The performance of the proposed method was validated in experiments with a publicly available dataset. Compared with manual annotations, the proposed method acquired a high intersection over union (IoU) of 0.7279. Conclusion: A deep-supervised ensemble learning network was presented for coronavirus pneumonia lesion segmentation in CT images. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by visual inspection and quantitative evaluation. Experimental results shown that the proposed mehtod has a perfect performance in COVID-19 lesion segmentation.

Current network access infrastructures are characterized by heterogeneity, low latency, high throughput, and high computational capability, enabling massive concurrent connections and various services. Unfortunately, this design does not pay significant attention to mobile services in underserved areas. In this context, the use of aerial radio access networks (ARANs) is a promising strategy to complement existing terrestrial communication systems. Involving airborne components such as unmanned aerial vehicles, drones, and satellites, ARANs can quickly establish a flexible access infrastructure on demand. ARANs are expected to support the development of seamless mobile communication systems toward a comprehensive sixth-generation (6G) global access infrastructure. First, we investigate related work to identify areas for further exploration in terms of recent knowledge advancements and analyses. Second, we define the scope and methodology of this study. Then, we describe ARAN architecture and its fundamental features for the development of 6G networks. In particular, we analyze the system model from several perspectives, including transmission propagation, energy consumption, communication latency, and network mobility. Furthermore, we introduce technologies that enable the success of ARAN implementations in terms of energy replenishment, operational management, and data delivery.
