In this paper we document for the first time some of the effects of self-healing, a property of orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) or vortex beams, as observed on a millimeter-wave experimental communications link in an outdoors line-of-sight (LOS) scenario. The OAM beams have a helical phase and polarization structure and have conical amplitude shape in the far field. The Poynting vectors of the OAM beams also possess helical structures, orthogonal to the corresponding helical phase-fronts. Due to such non-planar structure in the direction orthogonal to the beam axis, OAM beams are a subset of structured light beams. Such structured beams are known to possess self-healing properties when partially obstructed along their propagation axis, especially in their near fields, resulting in partial reconstruction of their structures at larger distances along their beam axis. Various theoretical rationales have been proposed to explain, model and experimentally verify the self-healing physical effects in structured optical beams, using various types of obstructions and experimental techniques. Based on these models, we hypothesize that any self-healing observed will be greater as the OAM order increases. Here we observe the self-healing effects for the first time in structured OAM radio beams, in terms of communication signals and channel parameters rather than beam structures. We capture the effects of partial near-field obstructions of OAM beams of different orders on the communications signals and provide a physical rationale to substantiate that the self-healing effect was observed to increase with the order of OAM, agreeing with our hypothesis.

Deep learning-based methods have made significant achievements in music source separation. However, obtaining good results while maintaining a low model complexity remains challenging in super wide-band music source separation. Previous works either overlook the differences in subbands or inadequately address the problem of information loss when generating subband features. In this paper, we propose SCNet, a novel frequency-domain network to explicitly split the spectrogram of the mixture into several subbands and introduce a sparsity-based encoder to model different frequency bands. We use a higher compression ratio on subbands with less information to improve the information density and focus on modeling subbands with more information. In this way, the separation performance can be significantly improved using lower computational consumption. Experiment results show that the proposed model achieves a signal to distortion ratio (SDR) of 9.0 dB on the MUSDB18-HQ dataset without using extra data, which outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, SCNet's CPU inference time is only 48% of HT Demucs, one of the previous state-of-the-art models.

Map** two modalities, speech and text, into a shared representation space, is a research topic of using text-only data to improve end-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) performance in new domains. However, the length of speech representation and text representation is inconsistent. Although the previous method up-samples the text representation to align with acoustic modality, it may not match the expected actual duration. In this paper, we proposed novel representations match strategy through down-sampling acoustic representation to align with text modality. By introducing a continuous integrate-and-fire (CIF) module generating acoustic representations consistent with token length, our ASR model can learn unified representations from both modalities better, allowing for domain adaptation using text-only data of the target domain. Experiment results of new domain data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems have entered the stage of commercial development, providing users with new services and improved user experiences as well as offering a host of novel opportunities to various industries. However, 5G still faces many challenges. To address these challenges, international industrial, academic, and standards organizations have commenced research on sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems. A series of white papers and survey papers have been published, which aim to define 6G in terms of requirements, application scenarios, key technologies, etc. Although ITU-R has been working on the 6G vision and it is expected to reach a consensus on what 6G will be by mid-2023, the related global discussions are still wide open and the existing literature has identified numerous open issues. This paper first provides a comprehensive portrayal of the 6G vision, technical requirements, and application scenarios, covering the current common understanding of 6G. Then, a critical appraisal of the 6G network architecture and key technologies is presented. Furthermore, existing testbeds and advanced 6G verification platforms are detailed for the first time. In addition, future research directions and open challenges are identified for stimulating the on-going global debate. Finally, lessons learned to date concerning 6G networks are discussed.

In this Mobile AI challenge, the target was to develop an efficient end-to-end AI-based bokeh effect rendering approach that can run on modern smartphone GPUs using TensorFlow Lite. The participants were provided with a large-scale EBB! bokeh dataset consisting of 5K shallow / wide depth-of-field image pairs captured using the Canon 7D DSLR camera. The runtime of the resulting models was evaluated on the Kirin 9000's Mali GPU that provides excellent acceleration results for the majority of common deep learning ops. Semantic signal processing and communications are poised to play a central part in develo** the next generation of sensor devices and networks. A crucial component of a semantic system is the extraction of semantic signals from the raw input signals, which has become increasingly tractable with the recent advances in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The accurate extraction of semantic signals using the aforementioned ML and AI methods, and the detection of semantic innovation for scheduling transmission and/or storage events are critical tasks for reliable semantic signal processing and communications. In this work, we propose a reliable semantic information extraction framework based on our previous work on semantic signal representations in a hierarchical graph-based structure. The proposed framework includes a time integration method to increase fidelity of ML outputs in a class-aware manner, a graph-edit-distance based metric to detect innovation events at the graph-level and filter out sporadic errors, and a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to produce smooth and reliable graph signals. The proposed methods within the framework are demonstrated individually and collectively through simulations and case studies based on real-world computer vision examples.

This paper develops a novel slip estimator using the invariant observer design theory and Disturbance Observer (DOB). The proposed state estimator for mobile robots is fully proprioceptive and combines data from an inertial measurement unit and body velocity within a Right Invariant Extended Kalman Filter (RI-EKF). By embedding the slip velocity into $\mathrm{SE}_3(3)$ matrix Lie group, the developed DOB-based RI-EKF provides real-time velocity and slip velocity estimates on different terrains. Experimental results using a Husky wheeled robot confirm the mathematical derivations and effectiveness of the proposed method in estimating the observable state variables. Task-oriented image semantic communication is a new communication paradigm, which aims to transmit semantics for artificial intelligent (AI) tasks while ignoring the reconstruction quality of the images. However, in some applications, such as autonomous driving, both image reconstruction quality and the performance of the followed AI tasks must be simultaneously considered. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes a task-oriented semantic communication scheme with semantic reconstruction (TOSC-SR). Its main goal is to simultaneously minimize pixel-level and task-relevant semantic-level distortion during communications under a certain rate, which formulates a new rate-distortion optimization problem. To successfully measure the loss at the semantic level, a new form of semantic distortion measured by the mutual information between the semantic-reconstructed images and the task labels is proposed. Then, we derive an analytical solution for the formulated problem, where the self-consistent equations of the problem are obtained to determine the optimal map** of the source and the semantic-reconstructed images. To implement TOSC-SR, we further obtain an extended form of rate-distortion form based on the variational approximation of mutual information, which is applicable to multiple AI tasks. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the traditional JPEG, JPEG2000, BPG, VVC-based image communication systems and deep learning based benchmarks in terms of image reconstruction quality, AI task performance, and multi-task generalization ability.

Antenna arrays have a long history of more than 100 years and have evolved closely with the development of electronic and information technologies, playing an indispensable role in wireless communications and radar. With the rapid development of electronic and information technologies, the demand for all-time, all-domain, and full-space network services has exploded, and new communication requirements have been put forward on various space/air/ground platforms. To meet the ever increasing requirements of the future sixth generation (6G) wireless communications, such as high capacity, wide coverage, low latency, and strong robustness, it is promising to employ different types of antenna arrays with various beamforming technologies in space/air/ground communication networks, bringing in advantages such as considerable antenna gains, multiplexing gains, and diversity gains. However, enabling antenna array for space/air/ground communication networks poses specific, distinctive and tricky challenges, which has aroused extensive research attention. This paper aims to overview the field of antenna array enabled space/air/ground communications and networking. The technical potentials and challenges of antenna array enabled space/air/ground communications and networking are presented first. Subsequently, the antenna array structures and designs are discussed. We then discuss various emerging technologies facilitated by antenna arrays to meet the new communication requirements of space/air/ground communication systems. Enabled by these emerging technologies, the distinct characteristics, challenges, and solutions for space communications, airborne communications, and ground communications are reviewed. Finally, we present promising directions for future research in antenna array enabled space/air/ground communications and networking.

To explore the interaction mechanism of power system dynamic simulations and AI, a general design of an AI-oriented power system dynamic simulator is proposed, which consists of a high-performance simulator with neural network supportability and flexible external and internal application programming interfaces (APIs). With the support of APIs, simulation-assisted AI and AI-assisted simulation form a comprehensive interaction mechanism between power system dynamic simulations and AI. A prototype of this design is implemented and made public based on a highly efficient electromechanical simulator. Tests of this prototype are carried out under four scenarios including sample generation, AI-based stability prediction, data-driven dynamic component modeling, and AI-aided stability control, which prove the validity, flexibility, and efficiency of the design and implementation of the AI-oriented power system dynamic simulator.

For E-band wireless communications, a high gain steerable antenna with sub-arrays is desired to reduce the implementation complexity. This paper presents an E-band communication link with 256-elements antennas based on 8-elements sub-arrays and four beam-forming chips in silicon germanium (SiGe) bipolar complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (BiCMOS), which is packaged on a 19-layer low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrate. After the design and manufacture of the 256-elements antenna, a fast near-field calibration method is proposed for calibration, where a single near-field measurement is required. Then near-field to far-field (NFFF) transform and far-field to near-field (FFNF) transform are used for the bore-sight calibration. The comparison with high frequency structure simulator (HFSS) is utilized for the non-bore-sight calibration. Verified on the 256-elements antenna, the beam-forming performance measured in the chamber is in good agreement with the simulations. The communication in the office environment is also realized using a fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR) system, whose bandwidth is 400 megahertz (MHz) and waveform format is orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with 120 kilohertz (kHz) sub-carrier spacing.

An autonomous robot that is able to physically guide humans through narrow and cluttered spaces could be a big boon to the visually-impaired. Most prior robotic guiding systems are based on wheeled platforms with large bases with actuated rigid guiding canes. The large bases and the actuated arms limit these prior approaches from operating in narrow and cluttered environments. We propose a method that introduces a quadrupedal robot with a leash to enable the robot-guiding human system to change its intrinsic dimension (by letting the leash go slack) in order to fit into narrow spaces. We propose a hybrid physical Human-Robot Interaction model that involves leash tension to describe the dynamical relationship in the robot-guiding human system. This hybrid model is utilized in a mixed-integer programming problem to develop a reactive planner that is able to utilize slack-taut switching to guide a blind-folded person to safely travel in a confined space. The proposed leash-guided robot framework is deployed on a Mini Cheetah quadrupedal robot and validated in experiments.

Clinical trials previously demonstrated the notable capacity to elicit visual percepts in blind patients affected with retinal diseases by electrically stimulating the remaining neurons on the retina. However, these implants restored very limited visual acuity and required transcutaneous cables traversing the eyeball, leading to reduced reliability and complex surgery with high postoperative infection risks. To overcome the limitations imposed by cables, a retinal implant architecture in which near-infrared illumination carries both power and data through the pupil to a digital stimulation controller is presented. A high efficiency multi-junction photovoltaic cell transduces the optical power to a CMOS stimulator capable of delivering flexible interleaved sequential stimulation through a diamond microelectrode array. To demonstrate the capacity to elicit a neural response with this approach while complying with the optical irradiance limit at the pupil, fluorescence imaging with a calcium indicator is used on a degenerate rat retina. The power delivered by the laser at the permissible irradiance of 4 mW/mm2 at 850 nm is shown to be sufficient to both power the stimulator ASIC and elicit a response in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), with the ability to generate of up to 35 000 pulses per second at the average stimulation threshold. This confirms the feasibility of generating a response in RGCs with an infrared-powered digital architecture capable of delivering complex sequential stimulation patterns at high repetition rates, albeit with some limitations.

This paper reports the demonstration of high-speed PAM-4 transmission using a 1.5-μm single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser (SM-VCSEL) over multicore fiber with 7 cores over different distances. We have successfully generated up to 70 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signals with a VCSEL in optical back-to-back, and transmitted 50 Gbaud PAM-4 signals over both 1-km dispersion-uncompensated and 10-km dispersion-compensated in each core, enabling a total data throughput of 700 Gbps over the 7-core fiber. Moreover, 56 Gbaud PAM-4 over 1-km has also been shown, whereby unfortunately not all cores provide the required 3.8 $\times$ 10 $^{-3}$ bit error rate (BER) for the 7% overhead-hard decision forward error correction (7% OH HDFEC). The limited bandwidth of the VCSEL and the adverse chromatic dispersion of the fiber are suppressed with pre-equalization based on accurate end-to-end channel characterizations. With a digital post-equalization, BER performance below the 7% OH-HDFEC limit is achieved over all cores. The demonstrated results show a great potential to realize high-capacity and compact short-reach optical interconnects for data centers.

Abstract:
We experimentally demonstrate a 28-Gbaud 16-QAM self-homodyne digital radio-over- 33.6km-7-core-fiber system with entropy coding for mobile fronthaul, achieving error-free carrier aggregation of 330 100-MHz 4096-QAM 5G-new-radio channels and 921 100-MHz QPSK 5G-new-radio channels with CPRI-equivalent data rate up to 3.73-Tbit/s.

Abstract:
Kernel adaptive filtering (KAF) is proposed for nonlinearity-tolerant optical direct detection. For 7x128Gbit/s PAM4 transmission over 33.6km 7-core-fiber, KAF only needs 10 equalizer taps to reach KP4-FEC limit ([email protected]), whereas decision-feedback-equalizer needs 43 equalizer taps to reach HD-FEC limit ([email protected]).
