Wireless communication is rapidly evolving, and future wireless communications (6G and beyond) will be more heterogeneous, multi-layered, and complex, which poses challenges to traditional communications. Adaptive technologies in traditional communication systems respond to environmental changes by modifying system parameters and structures on their own and are not flexible and agile enough to satisfy requirements in future communications. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel self-evolving communication framework, which consists of three layers: data layer, information layer, and knowledge layer. The first two layers allow communication systems to sense environments, fuse data, and generate a knowledge base for the knowledge layer. When dealing with a variety of application scenarios and environments, the generated knowledge is subsequently fed back to the first two layers for communication in practical application scenarios to obtain self-evolving ability and enhance the robustness of the system. In this paper, we first highlight the limitations of current adaptive communication systems and the need for intelligence, automation, and self-evolution in future wireless communications. We overview the development of self-evolving technologies and conceive the concept of self-evolving communications with its hypothetical architecture. To demonstrate the power of self-evolving modules, we compare the performances of a communication system with and without evolution. We then provide some potential techniques that enable self-evolving communications and challenges in implementing them.

Radio imaging is rapidly gaining prominence in the design of future communication systems, with the potential to utilize reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) as imaging apertures. Although the sparsity of targets in three-dimensional (3D) space has led most research to adopt compressed sensing (CS)-based imaging algorithms, these often require substantial computational and memory burdens. Drawing inspiration from conventional Fourier transform (FT)-based imaging methods, our research seeks to accelerate radio imaging in RIS-aided communication systems. To begin, we introduce a two-stage wavenumber domain 3D imaging technique: first, we modify RIS phase shifts to recover the equivalent channel response from the user equipment to the RIS array, subsequently employing traditional FT-based wavenumber domain methods to produce target images. We also determine the diffraction resolution limits of the system through k-space analysis, taking into account factors including system bandwidth, transmission direction, operating frequency, and the angle subtended by the RIS. Addressing the challenge of limited pilots in communication systems, we unveil an innovative algorithm that merges the strengths of both FT- and CS-based techniques by substituting the expansive sensing matrix with FT-based operators. Our simulation outcomes confirm that our proposed FT-based methods achieve high-quality images while demanding few time, memory, and communication resources.

In this correspondence, we propose a movable antenna (MA)-aided multi-user hybrid beamforming scheme with a sub-connected structure, where multiple movable sub-arrays can independently change their positions within different local regions. To maximize the system sum rate, we jointly optimize the digital beamformer, analog beamformer, and positions of subarrays, under the constraints of unit modulus, finite movable regions, and power budget. Due to the non-concave/non-convex objective function/constraints, as well as the highly coupled variables, the formulated problem is challenging to solve. By employing fractional programming, we develop an alternating optimization framework to solve the problem via a combination of Lagrange multipliers, penalty method, and gradient descent. Numerical results reveal that the proposed MA-aided hybrid beamforming scheme significantly improves the sum rate compared to its fixed-position antenna (FPA) counterpart. Moreover, with sufficiently large movable regions, the proposed scheme with sub-connected MA arrays even outperforms the fully-connected FPA array.

The widespread availability of publicly accessible medical images has significantly propelled advancements in various research and clinical fields. Nonetheless, concerns regarding unauthorized training of AI systems for commercial purposes and the duties of patient privacy protection have led numerous institutions to hesitate to share their images. This is particularly true for medical image segmentation (MIS) datasets, where the processes of collection and fine-grained annotation are time-intensive and laborious. Recently, Unlearnable Examples (UEs) methods have shown the potential to protect images by adding invisible shortcuts. These shortcuts can prevent unauthorized deep neural networks from generalizing. However, existing UEs are designed for natural image classification and fail to protect MIS datasets imperceptibly as their protective perturbations are less learnable than important prior knowledge in MIS, e.g., contour and texture features. To this end, we propose an Unlearnable Medical image generation method, termed UMed. UMed integrates the prior knowledge of MIS by injecting contour- and texture-aware perturbations to protect images. Given that our target is to only poison features critical to MIS, UMed requires only minimal perturbations within the ROI and its contour to achieve greater imperceptibility (average PSNR is 50.03) and protective performance (clean average DSC degrades from 82.18% to 6.80%).

The goal of No-Reference Image Quality Assessment (NR-IQA) is to predict the perceptual quality of an image in line with its subjective evaluation. To put the NR-IQA models into practice, it is essential to study their potential loopholes for model refinement. This paper makes the first attempt to explore the black-box adversarial attacks on NR-IQA models. Specifically, we first formulate the attack problem as maximizing the deviation between the estimated quality scores of original and perturbed images, while restricting the perturbed image distortions for visual quality preservation. Under such formulation, we then design a Bi-directional loss function to mislead the estimated quality scores of adversarial examples towards an opposite direction with maximum deviation. On this basis, we finally develop an efficient and effective black-box attack method against NR-IQA models. Extensive experiments reveal that all the evaluated NR-IQA models are vulnerable to the proposed attack method. And the generated perturbations are not transferable, enabling them to serve the investigation of specialities of disparate IQA models.

Heat pump and thermal energy storage (HPTES) systems, which are widely utilized in modern buildings for providing domestic hot water, contribute to a large share of household electricity consumption. With the increasing integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into modern power grids, demand-side management (DSM) becomes crucial for balancing power generation and consumption by adjusting end users' power consumption. This paper explores an energy flexible Model Predictive Control (MPC) design for a class of HPTES systems to facilitate demand-side management. The proposed DSM strategy comprises two key components: i) flexibility assessment, and ii) flexibility exploitation. Firstly, for flexibility assessment, a tailored MPC formulation, supplemented by a set of auxiliary linear constraints, is developed to quantitatively assess the flexibility potential inherent in HPTES systems. Subsequently, in flexibility exploitation, the energy flexibility is effectively harnessed in response to feasible demand response (DR) requests, which can be formulated as a standard mixed-integer MPC problem. Numerical experiments, based on a real-world HPTES installation, are conducted to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed design.

Airway-related quantitative imaging biomarkers are crucial for examination, diagnosis, and prognosis in pulmonary diseases. However, the manual delineation of airway trees remains prohibitively time-consuming. While significant efforts have been made towards enhancing airway modelling, current public-available datasets concentrate on lung diseases with moderate morphological variations. The intricate honeycombing patterns present in the lung tissues of fibrotic lung disease patients exacerbate the challenges, often leading to various prediction errors. To address this issue, the 'Airway-Informed Quantitative CT Imaging Biomarker for Fibrotic Lung Disease 2023' (AIIB23) competition was organized in conjunction with the official 2023 International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI). The airway structures were meticulously annotated by three experienced radiologists. Competitors were encouraged to develop automatic airway segmentation models with high robustness and generalization abilities, followed by exploring the most correlated QIB of mortality prediction. A training set of 120 high-resolution computerised tomography (HRCT) scans were publicly released with expert annotations and mortality status. The online validation set incorporated 52 HRCT scans from patients with fibrotic lung disease and the offline test set included 140 cases from fibrosis and COVID-19 patients. The results have shown that the capacity of extracting airway trees from patients with fibrotic lung disease could be enhanced by introducing voxel-wise weighted general union loss and continuity loss. In addition to the competitive image biomarkers for prognosis, a strong airway-derived biomarker (Hazard ratio>1.5, p<0.0001) was revealed for survival prognostication compared with existing clinical measurements, clinician assessment and AI-based biomarkers.

This work proposes a data-driven approach for bifurcation analysis in nonlinear systems when the governing differential equations are not available. Specifically, regularized regression with barrier terms is used to learn a homeomorphism that transforms the underlying system to a reference linear dynamics -- either an explicit reference model with desired qualitative behavior, or Koopman eigenfunctions that are identified from some system data under a reference parameter value. When such a homeomorphism fails to be constructed with low error, bifurcation phenomenon is detected. A case study is performed on a planar numerical example where a pitchfork bifurcation exists.

A graph-theory based multi-microgrid formation algorithm is developed which is agnostic of the underlying energy management scheme of the microgrids and solved in a rolling horizon fashion. The algorithm is then enhanced to handle multiple feeders where formation of long laterals needs to be avoided due to potential voltage control issues in distribution systems. The algorithm is evaluated on a synthetic two feeder system derived from interconnecting two IEEE 123 node system. In the rapidly advancing landscape of 6G, characterized by ultra-high-speed wideband transmission in millimeter-wave and terahertz bands, our paper addresses the pivotal task of enhancing physical layer security (PLS) within near-field wideband communications. We introduce true-time delayer (TTD)-incorporated analog beamfocusing techniques designed to address the interplay between near-field propagation and wideband beamsplit, an uncharted domain in existing literature. Our approach to maximizing secrecy rates involves formulating an optimization problem for joint power allocation and analog beamformer design, employing a two-stage process encompassing a semi-digital solution and analog approximation. This problem is efficiently solved through a combination of alternating optimization, fractional programming, and block successive upper-bound minimization techniques. Additionally, we present a low-complexity beamsplit-aware beamfocusing strategy, capitalizing on geometric insights from near-field wideband propagation, which can also serve as a robust initial value for the optimization-based approach. Numerical results substantiate the efficacy of the proposed methods, clearly demonstrating their superiority over TTD-free approaches in fortifying wideband PLS, as well as the advantageous secrecy energy efficiency achieved by leveraging low-cost analog devices.

This paper focuses on the model-free synthesis of state observers for nonlinear autonomous systems without knowing the governing equations. Specifically, the Kazantzis-Kravaris/Luenberger (KKL) observer structure is leveraged, where the outputs are fed into a linear time-invariant (LTI) system to obtain the observer states, which can be viewed as the states nonlinearly transformed by an immersion map**, and a neural network is used to approximate the inverse of the nonlinear immersion and estimate the states. In view of the possible existence of noises in output measurements, this work proposes to impose an upper bound on the Lipschitz constant of the neural network for robust and safe observation. A relation that bounds the generalization loss of state observation according to the Lipschitz constant, as well as the $H_2$-norm of the LTI part in the KKL observer, is established, thus reducing the model-free observer synthesis problem to that of Lipschitz-bounded neural network training, for which a direct parameterization technique is used. The proposed approach is demonstrated on a chaotic Lorenz system.

No-Reference Video Quality Assessment (NR-VQA) plays an essential role in improving the viewing experience of end-users. Driven by deep learning, recent NR-VQA models based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Transformers have achieved outstanding performance. To build a reliable and practical assessment system, it is of great necessity to evaluate their robustness. However, such issue has received little attention in the academic community. In this paper, we make the first attempt to evaluate the robustness of NR-VQA models against adversarial attacks, and propose a patch-based random search method for black-box attack. Specifically, considering both the attack effect on quality score and the visual quality of adversarial video, the attack problem is formulated as misleading the estimated quality score under the constraint of just-noticeable difference (JND). Built upon such formulation, a novel loss function called Score-Reversed Boundary Loss is designed to push the adversarial video's estimated quality score far away from its ground-truth score towards a specific boundary, and the JND constraint is modeled as a strict $L_2$ and $L_\infty$ norm restriction. By this means, both white-box and black-box attacks can be launched in an effective and imperceptible manner. The source code is available at https://github.com/GZHU-DVL/AttackVQA.

In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted PLA system, in which the legitimate transmitter can customize the channel fingerprints during PLA by controlling the ON-OFF state of the RIS. Without loss of generality, we use the received signal strength (RSS) based spoofing detection approach to analyze the feasibility of the proposed architecture. Specifically, based on the RSS, we derive the statistical properties of PLA and give some interesting insights, which showcase that the RIS-assisted PLA is theoretically feasible. Then, we derive the optimal detection threshold to maximize the performance in the context of the presented performance metrics. Next, the actual feasibility of the proposed system is verified via proof-of-concept experiments on a RIS-assisted PLA prototype platform. We propose a robust transceiver design for a covert integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Considering both bounded and probabilistic CSI error models, we formulate worst-case and outage-constrained robust optimization problems of joint trasceiver beamforming and radar waveform design to balance the radar performance of multiple targets while ensuring communications performance and covertness of the system. The optimization problems are challenging due to the non-convexity arising from the semi-infinite constraints (SICs) and the coupled transceiver variables. In an effort to tackle the former difficulty, S-procedure and Bernstein-type inequality are introduced for converting the SICs into finite convex linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and second-order cone constraints. A robust alternating optimization framework referred to alternating double-checking is developed for decoupling the transceiver design problem into feasibility-checking transmitter- and receiver-side subproblems, transforming the rank-one constraints into a set of LMIs, and verifying the feasibility of beamforming by invoking the matrix-lifting scheme. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm in improving the performance of covert ISAC systems.

Self-attention based Transformer has achieved great success in many computer vision tasks. However, its application to video quality assessment (VQA) has not been satisfactory so far. Evaluating the quality of in-the-wild videos is challenging due to the unknown of pristine reference and shooting distortion. This paper presents a co-trained Space-Time Attention network for the VQA problem, termed StarVQA+. Specifically, we first build StarVQA+ by alternately concatenating the divided space-time attention. Then, to facilitate the training of StarVQA+, we design a vectorized regression loss by encoding the mean opinion score (MOS) to the probability vector and embedding a special token as the learnable variable of MOS, leading to better fitting of human's rating process. Finally, to solve the data hungry problem with Transformer, we propose to co-train the spatial and temporal attention weights using both images and videos. Various experiments are conducted on the de-facto in-the-wild video datasets, including LIVE-Qualcomm, LIVE-VQC, KoNViD-1k, YouTube-UGC, LSVQ, LSVQ-1080p, and DVL2021. This study explores the use of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) components in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems for joint localization and environment sensing. The radar cross section (RCS) of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is calculated to develop a general path gain model for RISs and traditional scatterers. The results show that RISs have a greater potential to assist in localization due to their ability to maintain high RCSs and create strong NLOS links. A one-stage linear weighted least squares estimator is proposed to simultaneously determine user equipment (UE) locations, velocities, and scatterer (or RIS) locations using line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS paths. The estimator supports environment sensing and UE localization even using only NLOS paths. A second-stage estimator is also introduced to improve environment sensing accuracy by considering the nonlinear relationship between UE and scatterer locations. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimators in rich scattering environments and the benefits of using NLOS paths for improving UE location accuracy and assisting in environment sensing. This brief note presents experimental results of a proof-of-concept framework that got implemented and tested over three days as driven by the third challenge entitled "COVID-19 Competition", hosted at the AI-Enabled Medical Image Analysis Workshop of the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP 2023). Using a newly built virtual environment (created on March 17, 2023), we investigated various pre-trained two-dimensional convolutional neural networks (CNN) such as Dense Neural Network, Residual Neural Networks (ResNet), and Vision Transformers, as well as the extent of fine-tuning. Based on empirical experiments, we opted to fine-tune them using ADAM's optimization algorithm with a standard learning rate of 0.001 for all CNN architectures and apply early-stop** whenever the validation loss reached a plateau. For each trained CNN, the model state with the best validation accuracy achieved during training was stored and later reloaded for new classifications of unseen samples drawn from the validation set provided by the challenge organizers. According to the organizers, few of these 2D CNNs yielded performance comparable to an architecture that combined ResNet and Recurrent Neural Network (Gated Recurrent Units). As part of the challenge requirement, the source code produced during the course of this exercise is posted at https://github.com/lisatwyw/cov19. We also hope that other researchers may find this light prototype consisting of few Python files based on PyTorch 1.13.1 and TorchVision 0.14.1 approachable.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has aroused a surge of interest in recent years. In this paper, we investigate the joint phase alignment and phase quantization on discrete phase shift designs for RIS-assisted single-input single-output (SISO) system. Firstly, the phenomena of phase distribution in far field and near field are respectively unveiled, paving the way for discretization of phase shift for RIS. Then, aiming at aligning phases, the phase distribution law and its underlying degree-of-freedom (DoF) are characterized, serving as the guideline of phase quantization strategies. Subsequently, two phase quantization methods, dynamic threshold phase quantization (DTPQ) and equal interval phase quantization (EIPQ), are proposed to strengthen the beamforming effect of RIS. DTPQ is capable of calculating the optimal discrete phase shifts with linear complexity in the number of unit cells on RIS, whilst EIPQ is a simplified method with a constant complexity yielding sub-optimal solution. Simulation results demonstrate that both methods achieve substantial improvements on power gain, stability, and robustness over traditional quantization methods. The path loss (PL) scaling law under discrete phase shift of RIS is unveiled for the first time, with the phase shifts designed by DTPQ due to its optimality. Additionally, the field trials conducted at 2.6 GHz and 35 GHz validate the favourable performance of the proposed methods in practical communication environment.

Signal-free intersections are a representative application of smart and connected vehicle technologies. Although extensive results have been developed for trajectory planning and autonomous driving, the formulation and evaluation of vehicle sequencing have not been well understood. In this paper, we consider theoretical guarantees of macroscopic performance (i.e., capacity and delay) of typical sequencing policies at signal-free intersections. We model intersection traffic as a piecewise-deterministic Markov process (PDMP). We analytically characterize the intersection capacity regions and provide upper bounds on travel delay under three typical policies, viz. first-in-first-out, min-switchover, and longer-queue-first. We obtain these results by constructing policy-specific Lyapunov functions and computing mean drift of the PDMP. We also validate the results via a series of micro-simulation-based experiments.

Open international challenges are becoming the de facto standard for assessing computer vision and image analysis algorithms. In recent years, new methods have extended the reach of pulmonary airway segmentation that is closer to the limit of image resolution. Since EXACT'09 pulmonary airway segmentation, limited effort has been directed to quantitative comparison of newly emerged algorithms driven by the maturity of deep learning based approaches and clinical drive for resolving finer details of distal airways for early intervention of pulmonary diseases. Thus far, public annotated datasets are extremely limited, hindering the development of data-driven methods and detailed performance evaluation of new algorithms. To provide a benchmark for the medical imaging community, we organized the Multi-site, Multi-domain Airway Tree Modeling (ATM'22), which was held as an official challenge event during the MICCAI 2022 conference. ATM'22 provides large-scale CT scans with detailed pulmonary airway annotation, including 500 CT scans (300 for training, 50 for validation, and 150 for testing). The dataset was collected from different sites and it further included a portion of noisy COVID-19 CTs with ground-glass opacity and consolidation. Twenty-three teams participated in the entire phase of the challenge and the algorithms for the top ten teams are reviewed in this paper. Quantitative and qualitative results revealed that deep learning models embedded with the topological continuity enhancement achieved superior performance in general. ATM'22 challenge holds as an open-call design, the training data and the gold standard evaluation are available upon successful registration via its homepage.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are anticipated to transform wireless communication in a way that is both economical and energy efficient. Revealing the practical power consumption characteristics of RISs can provide an essential toolkit for the optimal design of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems and energy efficiency performance evaluation. Based on our previous work that modeled the dynamic power consumption of RISs, we henceforth concentrate more on static power consumption. We first divide the RIS hardware into three basic parts: the FPGA control board, the drive circuits, and the RIS unit cells. The first two parts are mainly to be investigated and the last part has been modeled as the dynamic power consumption in the previous work. In this work, the power consumption of the FPGA control board is regarded as a constant value, however, that of the drive circuit is a variant that is affected by the number of control signals and its self-power consumption characteristics. Therefore, we model the power consumption of the drive circuits of various kinds of RISs, i.e., PIN diode-/Varactor diode-/RF switch-based RIS. Finally, the measurement results and typical value of static power consumption are illustrated and discussed.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading global cause of blindness. Early detection of hard exudates plays a crucial role in identifying DR, which aids in treating diabetes and preventing vision loss. However, the unique characteristics of hard exudates, ranging from their inconsistent shapes to indistinct boundaries, pose significant challenges to existing segmentation techniques. To address these issues, we present a novel supervised contrastive learning framework to optimize hard exudate segmentation. Specifically, we introduce a patch-wise density contrasting scheme to distinguish between areas with varying lesion concentrations, and therefore improve the model's proficiency in segmenting small lesions. To handle the ambiguous boundaries, we develop a discriminative edge inspection module to dynamically analyze the pixels that lie around the boundaries and accurately delineate the exudates. Upon evaluation using the IDRiD dataset and comparison with state-of-the-art frameworks, our method exhibits its effectiveness and shows potential for computer-assisted hard exudate detection. This paper presents a novel 2-stage microgrid unit commitment (Microgrid-UC) algorithm considering cold-load pickup (CLPU) effects, three-phase load balancing requirements, and feasible reconfiguration options. Microgrid-UC schedules the operation of switches, generators, battery energy storage systems, and demand response resources to supply 3-phase unbalanced loads in an islanded microgrid for multiple days. A performance-based CLPU model is developed to estimate additional energy needs of CLPU so that CLPU can be formulated into the traditional 2-stage UC scheduling process. A per-phase demand response budget term is added to the 1st stage UC objective function to meet 3-phase load unbalance limits. To reduce computational complexity in the 1st stage UC, we replace the spanning tree method with a feasible reconfiguration topology list method. The proposed algorithm is developed on a modified IEEE 123-bus system and tested on the real-time simulation testbed using actual load and PV data. Simulation results show that Microgrid-UC successfully accounts for CLPU, phase imbalance, and feeder reconfiguration requirements.

This paper presents a dynamic predictive sampling (DPS) based analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that provides a non-uniform sampling of input analog continuous-time signals. The processing unit generates a dynamic prediction of the input signal using two prior-quantized samplings to compute digital values of an upper threshold and a lower threshold. The digital threshold values are converted to analog thresholds to form a tracking window. A comparator compares the input analog signal with the tracking window to determine if the prediction is successful. A counter records timestamps between the unsuccessful predictions, which are the selected sampling points for quantization. No quantization is performed for successfully predicted sampling points so that the data throughput and power can be saved. The proposed circuits were designed as a 10-bit ADC using 0.18 micro CMOS process sampling at 1 kHz. The results show that the proposed system can achieve a data compression factor of 6.17 and a power saving factor of 31% compared to a Nyquist rate SAR ADC for ECG monitoring.

This paper presents a fully integrated second-order level-crossing sampling data converter for real-time data compression and feature extraction. Compared with level-sampling ADCs which sample at fixed voltage levels, the proposed circuits updates tracking thresholds using linear extrapolation, which forms a second-order level-crossing sampling ADC that has sloped sampling levels. The computing is done digitally and is implemented by modifying the digital control logic of a conventional SAR ADC. The system selects only the turning points in the input waveform for quantization. The output of the proposed data converter consists of both the digital value of the selected sampling points and the timestamp between the selected sampling points. The main advantages are data savings and power savings for the data converter and the following digital signal processing or communication circuits, which are ideal for low-power sensors. The test chip was fabricated using a 180nm CMOS process. The proposed ADC saves 30% compared to a conventional SAR ADC and achieves a compression factor of 6.17 for tracking ECG signals.

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has received a lot of interest because of its capacity to reconfigure the wireless communication environment in a cost- and energy-efficient way. However, the realistic power consumption modeling and measurement validation of RIS has received far too little attention. Therefore, in this work, we model the power consumption of RIS and conduct measurement validations using various RISs to fill this vacancy. Firstly, we propose a practical power consumption model of RIS. The RIS hardware is divided into three basic parts: the FPGA control board, the drive circuits, and the RIS unit cells. The power consumption of the first two parts is modeled as $P_{\text {static}}$ and that of the last part is modeled as $P_{\text {units}}$. Expressions of $P_{\text {static}}$ and $P_{\text {units}}$ vary amongst different types of RISs. Secondly, we conduct measurements on various RISs to validate the proposed model. Five different RISs including the PIN diode, varactor diode, and RF switch types are measured, and measurement results validate the generality and applicability of the proposed power consumption model of RIS. Finally, we summarize the measurement results and discuss the approaches to achieve the low-power-consumption design of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems.

This paper proposes a nonparametric multivariate density forecast model based on deep learning. It not only offers the whole marginal distribution of each random variable in forecasting targets, but also reveals the future correlation between them. Differing from existing multivariate density forecast models, the proposed method requires no a priori hypotheses on the forecasted joint probability distribution of forecasting targets. In addition, based on the universal approximation capability of neural networks, the real joint cumulative distribution functions of forecasting targets are well-approximated by a special positive-weighted deep neural network in the proposed method. Numerical tests from different scenarios were implemented under a comprehensive verification framework for evaluation, including the very short-term forecast of the wind speed, wind power, and the day-ahead forecast of the aggregated electricity load. Testing results corroborate the superiority of the proposed method over current multivariate density forecast models considering the accordance with reality, prediction interval width, and correlations between different random variables.

Video quality is a primary concern for video service providers. In recent years, the techniques of video quality assessment (VQA) based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been developed rapidly. Although existing works attempt to introduce the knowledge of the human visual system (HVS) into VQA, there still exhibit limitations that prevent the full exploitation of HVS, including an incomplete model by few characteristics and insufficient connections among these characteristics. To overcome these limitations, this paper revisits HVS with five representative characteristics, and further reorganizes their connections. Based on the revisited HVS, a no-reference VQA framework called HVS-5M (NRVQA framework with five modules simulating HVS with five characteristics) is proposed. It works in a domain-fusion design paradigm with advanced network structures. On the side of the spatial domain, the visual saliency module applies SAMNet to obtain a saliency map. And then, the content-dependency and the edge masking modules respectively utilize ConvNeXt to extract the spatial features, which have been attentively weighted by the saliency map for the purpose of highlighting those regions that human beings may be interested in. On the other side of the temporal domain, to supplement the static spatial features, the motion perception module utilizes SlowFast to obtain the dynamic temporal features. Besides, the temporal hysteresis module applies TempHyst to simulate the memory mechanism of human beings, and comprehensively evaluates the quality score according to the fusion features from the spatial and temporal domains. Extensive experiments show that our HVS-5M outperforms the state-of-the-art VQA methods. Ablation studies are further conducted to verify the effectiveness of each module towards the proposed framework.

Forming a microgrid on a distribution system with large scale outage after a severe weather event is emerging as a viable solution to improve resiliency at the distribution level. This option becomes more attractive when the distribution system has high levels of distributed PV. The management of such feeder-level microgrid has however many challenges, such as limited resources that can be deployed on the feeder quickly, and the limited real-time monitoring and control on the distribution system. Effective use of the distributed PV is also challenging as they are not monitored and controlled. To handle these challenges, the paper proposes a 2-stage hierarchical energy management scheme to securely operate these feeder level micorgrids. The first stage of the scheme solves a sequential rolling optimization problem to optimally schedule the main resources (such as a mobile diesel generator and battery storage unit). The second stage adopts a dispatching scheme for the main resources to adjust the stage-1 set-points closer to real- time. The proposed scheme has unique features to assure that the scheme is robust under highly varying operating conditions with limited system observability: (i) an innovative PV forecast error adjustment and a dynamic reserve adjustment scheme to handle the extreme uncertainty on PV power output, and (ii) an intelligent fuel management scheme to assure that the resources are utilized optimally over the multiple days of the restoration period. The proposed algorithm is tested on sample system with real-time data. The results show that the proposed scheme performs well in maximizing service to loads by effective use of all the resources and by properly taking into account the challenging operating conditions.

This paper developed a novel control approach for the sparse and safe frequency regulation for inverter intensive microgrids (MGs). In the scenario, the inverters and external grids are expected to reach a synchronized desired frequency under regulations. To this end, the active power set-point acting as a control from a high-level controller is designed while considering two important performance metrics "sparsity" and "safety", which are to reduce the information exchange between controllers and ensure that the frequency keeps in safety regions during the whole operation process. Our proposed control design framework allows the sparse linear feedback controller (SLFC) to be unified with a family of conditions for safe control using control barrier functions. A quadratic programming (QP) problem is then constructed, and the real-time control policy is obtained by solving the QP problem. Importantly, we also found that the real-time control for each inverter depends on the cross-layer communication network topology which is the union of the one between controllers from SLFC and the one determined by the power flow network. Furthermore, our approach has been validated through extensive numerical simulations.

Overall survival (OS) time is one of the most important evaluation indices for gliomas situations. Multimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans play an important role in the study of glioma prognosis OS time. Several deep learning-based methods are proposed for the OS time prediction on multi-modal MRI problems. However, these methods usually fuse multi-modal information at the beginning or at the end of the deep learning networks and lack the fusion of features from different scales. In addition, the fusion at the end of networks always adapts global with global (eg. fully connected after concatenation of global average pooling output) or local with local (eg. bilinear pooling), which loses the information of local with global. In this paper, we propose a novel method for multi-modal OS time prediction of brain tumor patients, which contains an improved nonlocal features fusion module introduced on different scales. Our method obtains a relative 8.76% improvement over the current state-of-art method (0.6989 vs. 0.6426 on accuracy). In clinical practice, anisotropic volumetric medical images with low through-plane resolution are commonly used due to short acquisition time and lower storage cost. Nevertheless, the coarse resolution may lead to difficulties in medical diagnosis by either physicians or computer-aided diagnosis algorithms. Deep learning-based volumetric super-resolution (SR) methods are feasible ways to improve resolution, with convolutional neural networks (CNN) at their core. Despite recent progress, these methods are limited by inherent properties of convolution operators, which ignore content relevance and cannot effectively model long-range dependencies. In addition, most of the existing methods use pseudo-paired volumes for training and evaluation, where pseudo low-resolution (LR) volumes are generated by a simple degradation of their high-resolution (HR) counterparts. However, the domain gap between pseudo- and real-LR volumes leads to the poor performance of these methods in practice. In this paper, we build the first public real-paired dataset RPLHR-CT as a benchmark for volumetric SR, and provide baseline results by re-implementing four state-of-the-art CNN-based methods. Considering the inherent shortcoming of CNN, we also propose a transformer volumetric super-resolution network (TVSRN) based on attention mechanisms, dispensing with convolutions entirely. This is the first research to use a pure transformer for CT volumetric SR. The experimental results show that TVSRN significantly outperforms all baselines on both PSNR and SSIM. Moreover, the TVSRN method achieves a better trade-off between the image quality, the number of parameters, and the running time. Data and code are available at https://github.com/smilenaxx/RPLHR-CT.

Training deep learning models on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) can be a challenge due to the small amount of expert generated labels and inherent complexity of data source. Self-supervised contrastive learning (SSCL) has recently been shown to boost performance in several medical imaging tasks. However, it is unclear how much the pre-trained representation reflects the primary organ of interest compared to spurious surrounding tissue. In this work, we evaluate the optimal method of incorporating prior knowledge of anatomy into a SSCL training paradigm. Specifically, we evaluate using a segmentation network to explicitly local the heart in CMR images, followed by SSCL pretraining in multiple diagnostic tasks. We find that using a priori knowledge of anatomy can greatly improve the downstream diagnostic performance. Furthermore, SSCL pre-training with in-domain data generally improved downstream performance and more human-like saliency compared to end-to-end training and ImageNet pre-trained networks. A non-invasive and real-time monitoring probe in the drying process is required, but there is no suitable candidate for this purpose. In this report, we develop a theoretical relationship from the PSD to the speckle image and describe a physics-enhanced autocorrelation-based estimator (PEACE) machine learning algorithm for speckle analysis to measure the PSD of a powder surface. This method solves both the forward and inverse problems together and enjoys increased interpretability, since the machine learning approximator is regularized by the physical law.

This paper proposes a generalised propulsion energy consumption model (PECM) for rotary-wing ummanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under the consideration of the practical thrust-to-weight ratio (TWR) with respect to the velocity, acceleration and direction change of the UAVs. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed PECM, we consider a UAV-enabled communication system, where a rotary-wing UAV serves multiple ground users as an aerial base station. We aim to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the UAV by jointly optimizing the user scheduling and UAV trajectory variables. However, the formulated problem is a non-convex fractional integer programming problem, which is challenging to obtain its optimal solution. To tackle this, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm by decomposing the original problem into two sub-problems to obtain a suboptimal solution based on the successive convex approximation technique. Simulation results show that the optimized UAV trajectory by applying the proposed PECM are smoother and the corresponding EE has significant improvement as compared to other benchmark schemes.

Distribution system integrated community microgrids (CMGs) can partake in restoring loads during extended duration outages. At such times, the CMG is challenged with limited resource availability, absence of robust grid support, and heightened demand-supply uncertainty. This paper proposes a secure and adaptive three-stage hierarchical multi-timescale framework for scheduling and real-time (RT) dispatch of CMGs with hybrid PV systems to address these challenges. The framework enables the CMG to dynamically expand its boundary to support the neighboring grid sections and is adaptive to the changing forecast error impacts. The first stage solves a stochastic extended duration scheduling (EDS) problem to obtain referral plans for optimal resource rationing. The intermediate near-real-time (NRT) scheduling stage updates the EDS schedule closer to the dispatch time using newly obtained forecasts, followed by the RT dispatch stage. To make the dispatch decisions more secure and robust against forecast errors, a novel concept called delayed recourse is proposed. The methodology is evaluated via numerical simulations on a modified IEEE 123-bus system and validated using OpenDSS/hardware-in-loop simulations. The results show superior performance in maximizing load supply and continuous secure CMG operation under numerous operating scenarios.

A global trend in increasing wind turbine size and distances from shore is emerging within the rapidly growing offshore wind farm market. In the UK, the offshore wind sector produced its highest amount of electricity in the UK in 2019, a 19.6% increase on the year before. Currently, the UK is set to increase production further, targeting a 74.7% increase of installed turbine capacity as reflected in recent Crown Estate leasing rounds. With such tremendous growth, the sector is now looking to Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (RAI) in order to tackle lifecycle service barriers as to support sustainable and profitable offshore wind energy production. Today, RAI applications are predominately being used to support short term objectives in operation and maintenance. However, moving forward, RAI has the potential to play a critical role throughout the full lifecycle of offshore wind infrastructure, from surveying, planning, design, logistics, operational support, training and decommissioning. This paper presents one of the first systematic reviews of RAI for the offshore renewable energy sector. The state-of-the-art in RAI is analyzed with respect to offshore energy requirements, from both industry and academia, in terms of current and future requirements. Our review also includes a detailed evaluation of investment, regulation and skills development required to support the adoption of RAI. The key trends identified through a detailed analysis of patent and academic publication databases provide insights to barriers such as certification of autonomous platforms for safety compliance and reliability, the need for digital architectures for scalability in autonomous fleets, adaptive mission planning for resilient resident operations and optimization of human machine interaction for trusted partnerships between people and autonomous assistants.

Objectives: To develop and validate a deep learning (DL)-based primary tumor biopsy signature for predicting axillary lymph node (ALN) metastasis preoperatively in early breast cancer (EBC) patients with clinically negative ALN.
Methods: A total of 1,058 EBC patients with pathologically confirmed ALN status were enrolled from May 2010 to August 2020. A DL core-needle biopsy (DL-CNB) model was built on the attention-based multiple instance-learning (AMIL) framework to predict ALN status utilizing the DL features, which were extracted from the cancer areas of digitized whole-slide images (WSIs) of breast CNB specimens annotated by two pathologists. Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and areas under the ROC curve (AUCs) were analyzed to evaluate our model.
Results: The best-performing DL-CNB model with VGG16_BN as the feature extractor achieved an AUC of 0.816 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.758, 0.865) in predicting positive ALN metastasis in the independent test cohort. Furthermore, our model incorporating the clinical data, which was called DL-CNB+C, yielded the best accuracy of 0.831 (95%CI: 0.775, 0.878), especially for patients younger than 50 years (AUC: 0.918, 95%CI: 0.825, 0.971). The interpretation of DL-CNB model showed that the top signatures most predictive of ALN metastasis were characterized by the nucleus features including density ($p$ = 0.015), circumference ($p$ = 0.009), circularity ($p$ = 0.010), and orientation ($p$ = 0.012).
Conclusion: Our study provides a novel DL-based biomarker on primary tumor CNB slides to predict the metastatic status of ALN preoperatively for patients with EBC. The codes and dataset are available at https://github.com/bupt-ai-cz/BALNMP

Early detection of lung cancer is critical for improvement of patient survival. To address the clinical need for efficacious treatments, genetically engineered mouse models (GEMM) have become integral in identifying and evaluating the molecular underpinnings of this complex disease that may be exploited as therapeutic targets. Assessment of GEMM tumor burden on histopathological sections performed by manual inspection is both time consuming and prone to subjective bias. Therefore, an interplay of needs and challenges exists for computer-aided diagnostic tools, for accurate and efficient analysis of these histopathology images. In this paper, we propose a simple machine learning approach called the graph-based sparse principal component analysis (GS-PCA) network, for automated detection of cancerous lesions on histological lung slides stained by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Our method comprises four steps: 1) cascaded graph-based sparse PCA, 2) PCA binary hashing, 3) block-wise histograms, and 4) support vector machine (SVM) classification. In our proposed architecture, graph-based sparse PCA is employed to learn the filter banks of the multiple stages of a convolutional network. This is followed by PCA hashing and block histograms for indexing and pooling. The meaningful features extracted from this GS-PCA are then fed to an SVM classifier. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm on H&E slides obtained from an inducible K-rasG12D lung cancer mouse model using precision/recall rates, F-score, Tanimoto coefficient, and area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) and show that our algorithm is efficient and provides improved detection accuracy compared to existing algorithms.

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is capable of manipulating electromagnetic waves with its flexibly configurable unit cells, thus is an appealing technology to resist fast fading caused by multi-path in wireless communications. In this paper, a two-path propagation model for RIS-assisted wireless communications is proposed by considering both the direct path from the transmitter to the receiver and the assisted path provided by the RIS. The proposed propagation model unveils that the phase shifts of RISs can be optimized by appropriate configuration for multi-path fading mitigation. In particular, four types of RISs with different configuration capabilities are introduced and their performances on improving received signal power in virtue of the assisted path to resist fast fading are compared through extensive simulation results. In addition, an RIS operating at 35 GHz is used for experimental measurement. The experimental results verify that an RIS has the ability to combat fast fading and thus improves the receiving performance, which may lay a foundation for further researches.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signaling is one of the key technologies of current mobile communication systems. However, the complex and expensive radio frequency (RF) chains have always limited the increase of MIMO scale. In this paper, we propose a MIMO transmission architecture based on a dual-polarized reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which can directly achieve modulation and transmission of multichannel signals without the need for conventional RF chains. Compared with previous works, the proposed architecture can improve the integration of RIS-based transmission systems. A prototype of the dual-polarized RIS-based MIMO transmission system is built and the experimental results confirm the feasibility of the proposed architecture. The dual-polarized RIS-based MIMO transmission architecture provides a promising solution for realizing low-cost ultra-massive MIMO towards future networks.

A multivariate density forecast model based on deep learning is designed in this paper to forecast the joint cumulative distribution functions (JCDFs) of multiple security margins in power systems. Differing from existing multivariate density forecast models, the proposed method requires no a priori hypotheses on the distribution of forecasting targets. In addition, based on the universal approximation capability of neural networks, the value domain of the proposed approach has been proven to include all continuous JCDFs. The forecasted JCDF is further employed to calculate the deterministic security assessment index evaluating the security level of future power system operations. Numerical tests verify the superiority of the proposed method over current multivariate density forecast models. The deterministic security assessment index is demonstrated to be more informative for operators than security margins as well.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) provide an interface between the electromagnetic world of wireless propagation environments and the digital world of information science. Simple yet sufficiently accurate path loss models for RISs are an important basis for theoretical analysis and optimization of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems. In this paper, we refine our previously proposed free-space path loss model for RISs to make it simpler, more applicable, and easier to use. The impact of the antenna's directivity of the transmitter, receiver, and the unit cells of the RIS on the path loss is explicitly formulated as an angle-dependent loss factor. The refined model gives more accurate estimates of the path loss of RISs comprised of unit cells with a deep sub-wavelength size. Based on the proposed model, the properties of a single unit cell are evaluated in terms of scattering performance, power consumption, and area, which allows us to unveil fundamental considerations for deploying RISs in high frequency bands. Two fabricated RISs operating in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band are utilized to carry out a measurement campaign. The measurement results are shown to be in good agreement with the proposed path loss model. In addition, the experimental results suggest an effective form to characterize the power radiation pattern of the unit cell for path loss modeling.

This work employs an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a jammer to aid a covert communication from a transmitter Alice to a receiver Bob, where the UAV transmits artificial noise (AN) with random power to deliberately create interference to a warden Willie. In the considered system, the UAV's trajectory is critical to the covert communication performance, since the AN transmitted by the UAV also generates interference to Bob. To maximize the system performance, we formulate an optimization problem to jointly design the UAV's trajectory and Alice's transmit power. The formulated optimization problem is non-convex and is normally solved by a conventional iterative (CI) method, which requires multiple approximations based on Taylor expansions and an initialization on the UAV's trajectory. In order to eliminate these requirements, this work, for the first time, develops a geometric (GM) method to solve the optimization problem. By analyzing the covertness constraint, the GM method decouples the joint optimization into optimizing the UAV's trajectory and Alice's transmit power separately. Our examination shows that the GM method can significantly outperform the CI method in terms of achieving a higher average covert rate and the complexity of the GM method is lower than that of the CI method.
