The near-field radio communications (NFRC) will become crucial in 6G communication systems. The new mid-band (6-24 GHz) is the 6G potential candidate spectrum. In this paper, we will investigate the channel measurements and characteristics for the emerging NFRC. First, the near-field spherical-wave signal model is derived in detail, and the stationary interval (SI) division method is discussed based on the channel statistical properties. Then, the influence of line-of-sight (LOS) and obstructed-LOS (OLOS) environments on the near-field effects and spatial non-stationary (SnS) characteristic are explored based on the near-field channel measurements at 11-15 GHz band. We hope that this work will give some reference to the NFRC research.

The near-field radio communications (NFRC) will become crucial in 6G communication systems. It is known that the channel research is very important for the development and performance evaluation of the communication systems. In this paper, we will systematically investigate the channel measurements and modeling for the emerging NFRC. First, the principle design of massive MIMO channel measurement platform are solved. Second, an indoor XL-MIMO channel measurement campaign with 1600 array elements is conducted, and the channel characteristics are extracted and validated in the near-field region. Then, the outdoor XL-MIMO channel measurement campaign with 320 array elements is conducted, and the channel characteristics are extracted and modeled from near-field to far-field (NF-FF) region. The spatial non-stationary characteristics of angular spread at the transmitting end are more important in modeling. We hope that this work will give some reference to the near-field and far-field research for 6G.

In this study, we introduce a multi-modal approach that efficiently integrates multi-scale clinical and dermoscopy features within a single network, thereby substantially reducing model parameters. The proposed method includes three novel fusion schemes. Firstly, unlike current methods that usually employ two individual models for for clinical and dermoscopy modalities, we verified that multimodal feature can be learned by sharing the parameters of encoder while leaving the individual modal-specific classifiers. Secondly, the shared cross-attention module can replace the individual one to efficiently interact between two modalities at multiple layers. Thirdly, different from current methods that equally optimize dermoscopy and clinical branches, inspired by prior knowledge that dermoscopy images play a more significant role than clinical images, we propose a novel biased loss. This loss guides the single-shared network to prioritize dermoscopy information over clinical information, implicitly learning a better joint feature representation for the modal-specific task. Extensive experiments on a well-recognized Seven-Point Checklist (SPC) dataset and a collected dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on both CNN and Transformer structures. Furthermore, our method exhibits superiority in both accuracy and model parameters compared to currently advanced methods.

Medical image segmentation plays a vital role in clinic disease diagnosis and medical image analysis. However, labeling medical images for segmentation task is tough due to the indispensable domain expertise of radiologists. Furthermore, considering the privacy and sensitivity of medical images, it is impractical to build a centralized segmentation dataset from different medical institutions. Federated learning aims to train a shared model of isolated clients without local data exchange which aligns well with the scarcity and privacy characteristics of medical data. To solve the problem of labeling hard, many advanced semi-supervised methods have been proposed in a centralized data setting. As for federated learning, how to conduct semi-supervised learning under this distributed scenario is worth investigating. In this work, we propose a novel federated semi-supervised learning framework for medical image segmentation. The intra-client and inter-client consistency learning are introduced to smooth predictions at the data level and avoid confirmation bias of local models. They are achieved with the assistance of a Variational Autoencoder (VAE) trained collaboratively by clients. The added VAE model plays three roles: 1) extracting latent low-dimensional features of all labeled and unlabeled data; 2) performing a novel type of data augmentation in calculating intra-client consistency loss; 3) utilizing the generative ability of itself to conduct inter-client consistency distillation. The proposed framework is compared with other federated semi-supervised or self-supervised learning methods. The experimental results illustrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art method while avoiding a lot of computation and communication overhead.

The sixth generation (6G) mobile communications have attracted substantial attention in the global research community of information and communication technologies (ICT). 6G systems are expected to support not only extended 5G usage scenarios, but also new usage scenarios, such as integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), integrated artificial intelligence (AI) and communication, and communication and ubiquitous connectivity. To realize this goal, channel characteristics must be comprehensively studied and properly exploited, so as to promote the design, standardization, and optimization of 6G systems. In this paper, we first summarize the requirements and challenges in 6G channel research. Our focus is on channels for five promising technologies enabling 6G, including terahertz (THz), extreme MIMO (E-MIMO), ISAC, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), and space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN). Then, a survey of the progress of the 6G channel research regarding the above five promising technologies is presented in terms of the latest measurement campaigns, new characteristics, modeling methods, and research prospects. Moreover, a tutorial on the 6G channel simulations is presented. We introduce the BUPTCMG- 6G, a 6G link-level channel simulator, developed based on the ITU/3GPP 3D geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) methodology. The simulator supports the channel simulation of the aforementioned 6G potential technologies. To facilitate the use of the simulator, the tutorial encompasses the design framework, user guidelines, and application examples. This paper offers in-depth, hands-on insights into the best practices of channel measurements, modeling, and simulations for the evaluation of 6G technologies, the development of 6G standards, and the implementation and optimization of 6G systems.

Terahertz (THz) communication is envisioned as one of the possible technologies for the sixth-generation (6G) communication system due to its rich spectrum. To evaluate the performance of THz communication, it is essential to propose THz channel models within the common framework of the geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). This paper focuses on 3GPP-like GBSM THz channel modeling based on channel measurements. We first present channel measurements at 100 GHz in an indoor office scenario and at 132 GHz in an urban microcellular scenario. Subsequently, channel characteristics such as PL, delay spread, angle spread, K-factor, cluster characteristic, cross-correlations, and correlation distance are obtained and analyzed using the measurement data. Additionally, statistical values of the channel characteristics are extracted based on the statistical distribution of 3GPP channel models, which can be used to reconstruct the channel impulse response (CIR). Furthermore, these obtained values are compared with the default values in the 3GPP channel model, revealing discrepancies that indicate the default values cannot accurately characterize the THz channel. For instance, for the case of line-of-sight links in the indoor office, the measured cluster number is 4 while the default value is 15. Finally, the channel capacity at THz frequency band is evaluated by the reconstructed CIRs generated by the GBSM using the measured statistical values and the 3GPP default values. It is observed that the 3GPP default values overestimate the THz channel capacity, equivalent to more than 10 bps/Hz larger at a signal-to-noise ratio of 30 dB. Overall, these findings are helpful in understanding and modeling the THz channel, facilitating the application of THz communication techniques for 6G.

In this paper, the level of sparsity is examined at 6, 26, and 132 GHz carrier frequencies by conducting channel measurements in an indoor office environment. By using the Gini index (value between 0 and 1) as a metric for characterizing sparsity, we show that increasing carrier frequency leads to increased levels of sparsity. The measured channel impulse responses are used to derive a Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)-style propagation model, used to calculate the Gini index for the comparison of the channel sparsity between the measurement and simulation based on the 3GPP model. Our results show that the mean value of the Gini index in measurement is over twice the value in simulation, implying that the 3GPP channel model does not capture the effects of sparsity in the delay domain as frequency increases. In addition, a new intra-cluster power allocation model based on measurements is proposed to characterize the effects of sparsity in the delay domain of the 3GPP channel model. The accuracy of the proposed model is analyzed using theoretical derivations and simulations. Using the derived intra-cluster power allocation model, the mean value of the Gini index is 0.97, while the spread of variability is restricted to 0.01, demonstrating that the proposed model is suitable for 3GPP-type channels. To our best knowledge, this paper is the first to perform measurements and analysis at three different frequencies for the evaluation of channel sparsity in the same environment.

Airway segmentation is crucial for the examination, diagnosis, and prognosis of lung diseases, while its manual delineation is unduly burdensome. To alleviate this time-consuming and potentially subjective manual procedure, researchers have proposed methods to automatically segment airways from computerized tomography (CT) images. However, some small-sized airway branches (e.g., bronchus and terminal bronchioles) significantly aggravate the difficulty of automatic segmentation by machine learning models. In particular, the variance of voxel values and the severe data imbalance in airway branches make the computational module prone to discontinuous and false-negative predictions. especially for cohorts with different lung diseases. Attention mechanism has shown the capacity to segment complex structures, while fuzzy logic can reduce the uncertainty in feature representations. Therefore, the integration of deep attention networks and fuzzy theory, given by the fuzzy attention layer, should be an escalated solution for better generalization and robustness. This paper presents an efficient method for airway segmentation, comprising a novel fuzzy attention neural network and a comprehensive loss function to enhance the spatial continuity of airway segmentation. The deep fuzzy set is formulated by a set of voxels in the feature map and a learnable Gaussian membership function. Different from the existing attention mechanism, the proposed channel-specific fuzzy attention addresses the issue of heterogeneous features in different channels. Furthermore, a novel evaluation metric is proposed to assess both the continuity and completeness of airway structures. The efficiency, generalization and robustness of the proposed method have been proved by training on normal lung disease while testing on datasets of lung cancer, COVID-19 and pulmonary fibrosis.

Tissue segmentation is the mainstay of pathological examination, whereas the manual delineation is unduly burdensome. To assist this time-consuming and subjective manual step, researchers have devised methods to automatically segment structures in pathological images. Recently, automated machine and deep learning based methods dominate tissue segmentation research studies. However, most machine and deep learning based approaches are supervised and developed using a large number of training samples, in which the pixelwise annotations are expensive and sometimes can be impossible to obtain. This paper introduces a novel unsupervised learning paradigm by integrating an end-to-end deep mixture model with a constrained indicator to acquire accurate semantic tissue segmentation. This constraint aims to centralise the components of deep mixture models during the calculation of the optimisation function. In so doing, the redundant or empty class issues, which are common in current unsupervised learning methods, can be greatly reduced. By validation on both public and in-house datasets, the proposed deep constrained Gaussian network achieves significantly (Wilcoxon signed-rank test) better performance (with the average Dice scores of 0.737 and 0.735, respectively) on tissue segmentation with improved stability and robustness, compared to other existing unsupervised segmentation approaches. Furthermore, the proposed method presents a similar performance (p-value > 0.05) compared to the fully supervised U-Net.

Terahertz (THz) channel propagation characteristics are vital for the design, evaluation, and optimization for THz communication systems. Moreover, reflection plays a significant role in channel propagation. In this letter, the reflection coefficient of the THz channel is researched based on extensive measurement campaigns. Firstly, we set up the THz channel sounder from 220 to 320 GHz with the incident angle ranging from 10° to 80°. Based on the measured propagation loss, the reflection coefficients of five building materials, i.e., glass, tile, aluminium alloy, board, and plasterboard, are calculated separately for frequencies and incident angles. It is found that the lack of THz relative parameters leads to the Fresnel model of non-metallic materials can not fit the measured data well. Thus, we propose a frequency-angle two-dimensional reflection coefficient model by modifying the Fresnel model with the Lorenz and Drude model. The proposed model characterizes the frequency and incident angle for reflection coefficients and shows low root-mean-square error with the measured data. Generally, these results are useful for modeling THz channels.

In this paper, we introduce a scheme to recognize fine-grained glomeruli lesions from whole slide images. First, a focal instance structural similarity loss is proposed to drive the model to locate all types of glomeruli precisely. Then an Uncertainty Aided Apportionment Network is designed to carry out the fine-grained visual classification without bounding-box annotations. This double branch-shaped structure extracts common features of the child class from the parent class and produces the uncertainty factor for reconstituting the training dataset. Results of slide-wise evaluation illustrate the effectiveness of the entire scheme, with an 8-22% improvement of the mean Average Precision compared with remarkable detection methods. The comprehensive results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) wireless communication systems are fundamental in many intelligent transportation applications, e.g., traffic load control, driverless vehicle, and collision avoidance. Hence, develo** appropriate V2V communication systems and standardization require realistic V2V propagation channel models. However, most existing V2V channel modeling studies focus on car-to-car channels; only a few investigate truck-to-car (T2C) or truck-to-truck (T2T) channels. In this paper, a hybrid geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) is proposed for T2X (T2C or T2T) channels in freeway environments. Next, we parameterize this GBSM from the extensive channel measurements. We extract the multipath components (MPCs) by using a joint maximum likelihood estimation (RiMAX) and then cluster the MPCs based on their evolution patterns. We classify the determined clusters as line-of-sight, multiple-bounce reflections from static interaction objects (IOs), multiple-bounce reflections from mobile IOs, multiple-bounce reflections, and diffuse scattering. Specifically, we model multiple-bounce reflections as double clusters following the COST 273/COST2100 method. This article presents the complete parameterization of the channel model. We validate this model by contrasting the root-mean-square delay spread and the angular spreads of departure/arrival derived from the channel model with the outcomes directly derived from the measurements.

This paper proposes two algorithms to maximize the minimum array power gain in a wide-beam mainlobe by solving the power gain pattern synthesis (PGPS) problem with and without sidelobe constraints. Firstly, the nonconvex PGPS problem is transformed into a nonconvex linear inequality optimization problem and then converted to an augmented Lagrangian problem by introducing auxiliary variables via the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) framework. Next, the original intractable problem is converted into a series of nonconvex and convex subproblems. The nonconvex subproblems are solved by dividing their solution space into a finite set of smaller ones, in which the solution would be obtained pseudoanalytically. In such a way, the proposed algorithms are superior to the existing PGPS-based ones as their convergence can be theoretically guaranteed with a lower computational burden. Numerical examples with both isotropic element pattern (IEP) and active element pattern (AEP) arrays are simulated to show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithms by comparing with the related existing algorithms.

Precise and accurate segmentation of the most common head-and-neck tumor, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), in MRI sheds light on treatment and regulatory decisions making. However, the large variations in the lesion size and shape of NPC, boundary ambiguity, as well as the limited available annotated samples conspire NPC segmentation in MRI towards a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a Dense SegU-net (DSU-net) framework for automatic NPC segmentation in MRI. Our contribution is threefold. First, different from the traditional decoder in U-net using upconvolution for upsamling, we argue that the restoration from low resolution features to high resolution output should be capable of preserving information significant for precise boundary localization. Hence, we use unpooling to unsample and propose SegU-net. Second, to combat the potential vanishing-gradient problem, we introduce dense blocks which can facilitate feature propagation and reuse. Third, using only cross entropy (CE) as loss function may bring about troubles such as miss-prediction, therefore we propose to use a loss function comprised of both CE loss and Dice loss to train the network. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons are carried out extensively on in-house datasets, the experimental results show that our proposed architecture outperforms the existing state-of-the-art segmentation networks.

This challenge has two tracks for quantitatively evaluating image denoising performance in (1) the Bayer-pattern rawRGB and (2) the standard RGB (sRGB) color spaces. Each track ~250 registered participants. A total of 22 teams, proposing 24 methods, competed in the final phase of the challenge. The proposed methods by the participating teams represent the current state-of-the-art performance in image denoising targeting real noisy images. The newly collected SIDD+ datasets are publicly available at: https://bit.ly/siddplus_data.

Since sparse unmixing has emerged as a promising approach to hyperspectral unmixing, some spatial-contextual information in the hyperspectral images has been exploited to improve the performance of the unmixing recently. The total variation (TV) has been widely used to promote the spatial homogeneity as well as the smoothness between adjacent pixels. However, the computation task for hyperspectral sparse unmixing with a TV regularization term is heavy. Besides, the convergence of the primal alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for the hyperspectral sparse unmixing with a TV regularization term has not been explained in details. In this paper, we design an efficient and convergent dual symmetric Gauss-Seidel ADMM (sGS-ADMM) for hyperspectral sparse unmixing with a TV regularization term. We also present the global convergence and local linear convergence rate analysis for this algorithm. As demonstrated in numerical experiments, our algorithm can obviously improve the efficiency of the unmixing compared with the state-of-the-art algorithm. More importantly, we can obtain images with higher quality.

In this paper, we develop a dual alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for an image decomposition model. In this model, an image is divided into two meaningful components, i.e., a cartoon part and a texture part. The optimization algorithm that we develop not only gives the cartoon part and the texture part of an image but also gives the restored image (cartoon part + texture part). We also present the global convergence and the local linear convergence rate for the algorithm under some mild conditions. Numerical experiments demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the dual ADMM (dADMM). Furthermore, we can obtain relatively higher signalto-noise ratio (SNR) comparing to other algorithms. It shows that the choice of the algorithm is also important even for the same model.

Target control of directed networks, which aims to control only a target subset instead of the entire set of nodes in large natural and technological networks, is an outstanding challenge faced in various real world applications. We address one fundamental issue regarding this challenge, i.e., for a given target subset, how to allocate a minimum number of control sources which provide input signals to the network nodes. This issue remains open in general networks with loops. We show that the issue is essentially a path cover problem and can be further converted into a maximum network flow problem. A method termed `Maximum Flow based Target Path-cover' (MFTP) with complexity $O(|V|^{1/2}|E|)$ in which $|V|$ and $|E|$ denote the number of network nodes and edges is proposed. It is also rigorously proven to provide the minimum number of control sources on arbitrary directed networks, whether loops exist or not. We anticipate that this work would serve wide applications in target control of real-life networks, as well as counter control of various complex systems which may contribute to enhancing system robustness and resilience.

Over the past few years, ride-sharing has emerged as an effective way to relieve traffic congestion. A key problem for these platforms is to come up with a revenue-optimal (or GMV-optimal) pricing scheme and an induced vehicle dispatching policy that incorporate geographic and temporal information. In this paper, we aim to tackle this problem via an economic approach.
Modeled naively, the underlying optimization problem may be non-convex and thus hard to compute. To this end, we use a so-called "ironing" technique to convert the problem into an equivalent convex optimization one via a clean Markov decision process (MDP) formulation, where the states are the driver distributions and the decision variables are the prices for each pair of locations. Our main finding is an efficient algorithm that computes the exact revenue-optimal (or GMV-optimal) randomized pricing schemes. We characterize the optimal solution of the MDP by a primal-dual analysis of a corresponding convex program. We also conduct empirical evaluations of our solution through real data of a major ride-sharing platform and show its advantages over fixed pricing schemes as well as several prevalent surge-based pricing schemes.
