The paper develops datasets and methods to assess student participation in real-life collaborative learning environments. In collaborative learning environments, students are organized into small groups where they are free to interact within their group. Thus, students can move around freely causing issues with strong pose variation, move out and re-enter the camera scene, or face away from the camera. We formulate the problem of assessing student participation into two subproblems: (i) student group detection against strong background interference from other groups, and (ii) dynamic participant tracking within the group. A massive independent testing dataset of 12,518,250 student label instances, of total duration of 21 hours and 22 minutes of real-life videos, is used for evaluating the performance of our proposed method for student group detection. The proposed method of using multiple image representations is shown to perform equally or better than YOLO on all video instances. Over the entire dataset, the proposed method achieved an F1 score of 0.85 compared to 0.80 for YOLO. Following student group detection, the paper presents the development of a dynamic participant tracking system for assessing student group participation through long video sessions. The proposed dynamic participant tracking system is shown to perform exceptionally well, missing a student in just one out of 35 testing videos. In comparison, a state of the art method fails to track students in 14 out of the 35 testing videos. The proposed method achieves 82.3% accuracy on an independent set of long, real-life collaborative videos.

Active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a revolutionary technique for the future 6G networks. The conventional far-field single-IRS-aided directional modulation(DM) networks have only one (no direct path) or two (existing direct path) degrees of freedom (DoFs). This means that there are only one or two streams transmitted simultaneously from base station to user and will seriously limit its rate gain achieved by IRS. How to create multiple DoFs more than two for DM? In this paper, single large-scale IRS is divided to multiple small IRSs and a novel multi-IRS-aided multi-stream DM network is proposed to achieve a point-to-point multi-stream transmission by creating $K$ ($\geq3$) DoFs, where multiple small IRSs are placed distributively via multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The null-space projection, zero-forcing (ZF) and phase alignment are adopted to design the transmit beamforming vector, receive beamforming vector and phase shift matrix (PSM), respectively, called NSP-ZF-PA. Here, $K$ PSMs and their corresponding beamforming vectors are independently optimized. The weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) algorithm is involved in alternating iteration for the optimization variables by introducing the power constraint on IRS, named WMMSE-PC, where the majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm is used to solve the total PSM. To achieve a lower computational complexity, a maximum trace method, called Max-TR-SVD, is proposed by optimize the PSM of all IRSs. Numerical simulation results has shown that the proposed NSP-ZF-PA performs much better than Max-TR-SVD in terms of rate. In particular, the rate of NSP-ZF-PA with sixteen small IRSs is about five times that of NSP-ZF-PA with combining all small IRSs as a single large IRS. Thus, a dramatic rate enhancement may be achieved by multiple distributed IRSs.

Traditional spectral imaging methods are constrained by the time-consuming scanning process, limiting the application in dynamic scenarios. One-shot spectral imaging based on reconstruction has been a hot research topic recently and the primary challenges still lie in both efficient fabrication techniques suitable for mass production and the high-speed, high-accuracy reconstruction algorithm for real-time spectral imaging. In this study, we introduce an innovative on-chip real-time hyperspectral imager that leverages nanophotonic film spectral encoders and a Massively Parallel Network (MP-Net), featuring a 4 * 4 array of compact, all-dielectric film units for the micro-spectrometers. Each curved nanophotonic film unit uniquely modulates incident light across the underlying 3 * 3 CMOS image sensor (CIS) pixels, enabling a high spatial resolution equivalent to the full CMOS resolution. The implementation of MP-Net, specially designed to address variability in transmittance and manufacturing errors such as misalignment and non-uniformities in thin film deposition, can greatly increase the structural tolerance of the device and reduce the preparation requirement, further simplifying the manufacturing process. Tested in varied environments on both static and moving objects, the real-time hyperspectral imager demonstrates the robustness and high-fidelity spatial-spectral data capabilities across diverse scenarios. This on-chip hyperspectral imager represents a significant advancement in real-time, high-resolution spectral imaging, offering a versatile solution for applications ranging from environmental monitoring, remote sensing to consumer electronics.

The exact distributions of the received signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs) at the legitimate user and the eavesdroppers located according to a Poisson point process (PPP) are derived, and a closed-form expression for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) is obtained. It is revealed that the secrecy performance is mainly affected by the number of RIS reflecting elements, and the impact of the transmit antennas and transmit power at the base station is marginal. In addition, when the locations of the randomly located eavesdroppers are unknown, deploying the RIS closer to the legitimate user rather than to the base station is shown to be more efficient. We also perform an analytical study demonstrating that the secrecy diversity order depends on the path loss exponent of the RIS-to-ground links. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of these theoretical observations.

Existing works mainly rely on the far-field planar-wave-based channel model to assess the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-enabled wireless communication systems. However, when the transmitter and receiver are in near-field ranges, this will result in relatively low computing accuracy. To tackle this challenge, we initially develop an analytical framework for sub-array partitioning. This framework divides the large-scale RIS array into multiple sub-arrays, effectively reducing modeling complexity while maintaining acceptable accuracy. Then, we develop a beam domain channel model based on the proposed sub-array partition framework for large-scale RIS-enabled UAV-to-vehicle communication systems, which can be used to efficiently capture the sparse features in RIS-enabled UAV-to-vehicle channels in both near-field and far-field ranges. Furthermore, some important propagation characteristics of the proposed channel model, including the spatial cross-correlation functions (CCFs), temporal auto-correlation functions (ACFs), frequency correlation functions (CFs), and channel capacities with respect to the different physical features of the RIS and non-stationary properties of the channel model are derived and analyzed. Finally, simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed framework is helpful to achieve a good tradeoff between model complexity and accuracy for investigating the channel propagation characteristics, and therefore providing highly-efficient communications in RIS-enabled UAV-to-vehicle wireless networks.

Speech-to-speech translation is yet to reach the same level of coverage as text-to-text translation systems. The current speech technology is highly limited in its coverage of over 7000 languages spoken worldwide, leaving more than half of the population deprived of such technology and shared experiences. With voice-assisted technology (such as social robots and speech-to-text apps) and auditory content (such as podcasts and lectures) on the rise, ensuring that the technology is available for all is more important than ever. Speech translation can play a vital role in mitigating technological disparity and creating a more inclusive society. With a motive to contribute towards speech translation research for low-resource languages, our work presents a direct speech-to-speech translation model for one of the Indic languages called Punjabi to English. Additionally, we explore the performance of using a discrete representation of speech called discrete acoustic units as input to the Transformer-based translation model. The model, abbreviated as Unit-to-Unit Translation (U2UT), takes a sequence of discrete units of the source language (the language being translated from) and outputs a sequence of discrete units of the target language (the language being translated to). Our results show that the U2UT model performs better than the Speech-to-Unit Translation (S2UT) model by a 3.69 BLEU score.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is emerging as a promising technique for performance enhancement for next-generation wireless networks. This paper investigates the physical layer security of an RIS-assisted multiple-antenna communication system in the presence of random spatially distributed eavesdroppers. The RIS-to-ground channels are assumed to experience Rician fading. Using stochastic geometry, exact distributions of the received signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs) at the legitimate user and the eavesdroppers located according to a Poisson point process (PPP) are derived, and closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the ergodic secrecy capacity (ESC) are obtained to provide insightful guidelines for system design. First, the secrecy diversity order is obtained as $\frac{2}{α_2}$, where $α_2$ denotes the path loss exponent of the RIS-to-ground links. Then, it is revealed that the secrecy performance is mainly affected by the number of RIS reflecting elements, $N$, and the impact of the number of transmit antennas and transmit power at the base station is marginal. In addition, when the locations of the randomly located eavesdroppers are unknown, deploying the RIS closer to the legitimate user rather than to the base station is shown to be more efficient. Moreover, it is also found that the density of randomly located eavesdroppers, $λ_e$, has an additive effect on the asymptotic ESC performance given by $\log_2{\left({1}/{λ_e}\right)}$. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of these theoretical observations.

Fetal pose estimation in 3D ultrasound (US) involves identifying a set of associated fetal anatomical landmarks. Its primary objective is to provide comprehensive information about the fetus through landmark connections, thus benefiting various critical applications, such as biometric measurements, plane localization, and fetal movement monitoring. However, accurately estimating the 3D fetal pose in US volume has several challenges, including poor image quality, limited GPU memory for tackling high dimensional data, symmetrical or ambiguous anatomical structures, and considerable variations in fetal poses. In this study, we propose a novel 3D fetal pose estimation framework (called FetusMapV2) to overcome the above challenges. Our contribution is three-fold. First, we propose a heuristic scheme that explores the complementary network structure-unconstrained and activation-unreserved GPU memory management approaches, which can enlarge the input image resolution for better results under limited GPU memory. Second, we design a novel Pair Loss to mitigate confusion caused by symmetrical and similar anatomical structures. It separates the hidden classification task from the landmark localization task and thus progressively eases model learning. Last, we propose a shape priors-based self-supervised learning by selecting the relatively stable landmarks to refine the pose online. Extensive experiments and diverse applications on a large-scale fetal US dataset including 1000 volumes with 22 landmarks per volume demonstrate that our method outperforms other strong competitors.

While network slicing has become a prevalent approach to service differentiation, radio access network (RAN) slicing remains challenging due to the need of substantial adaptivity and flexibility to cope with the highly dynamic network environment in RANs. In this paper, we develop a slicing-based resource management framework for a two-tier RAN to support multiple services with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. The developed framework focuses on base station (BS) service coverage (SC) and interference management for multiple slices, each of which corresponds to a service. New designs are introduced in the spatial, temporal, and slice dimensions to cope with spatiotemporal variations in data traffic, balance adaptivity and overhead of resource management, and enhance flexibility in service differentiation. Based on the proposed framework, an energy efficiency maximization problem is formulated, and an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted approach is proposed to solve the problem. Specifically, a deep unsupervised learning-assisted algorithm is proposed for searching the optimal SC of the BSs, and an optimization-based analytical solution is found for managing interference among BSs. Simulation results under different data traffic distributions demonstrate that our proposed slicing-based resource management framework, empowered by the AI-assisted approach, outperforms the benchmark frameworks and achieves a close-to-optimal performance in energy efficiency.

Motivated by the advances in deep learning techniques, the application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based object detection has proliferated across a range of fields, including vehicle counting, fire detection, and city monitoring. While most existing research studies only a subset of the challenges inherent to UAV-based object detection, there are few studies that balance various aspects to design a practical system for energy consumption reduction. In response, we present the E$^3$-UAV, an edge-based energy-efficient object detection system for UAVs. The system is designed to dynamically support various UAV devices, edge devices, and detection algorithms, with the aim of minimizing energy consumption by deciding the most energy-efficient flight parameters (including flight altitude, flight speed, detection algorithm, and sampling rate) required to fulfill the detection requirements of the task. We first present an effective evaluation metric for actual tasks and construct a transparent energy consumption model based on hundreds of actual flight data to formalize the relationship between energy consumption and flight parameters. Then we present a lightweight energy-efficient priority decision algorithm based on a large quantity of actual flight data to assist the system in deciding flight parameters. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the system, and our experimental results demonstrate that it can significantly decrease energy consumption in real-world scenarios. Additionally, we provide four insights that can assist researchers and engineers in their efforts to study UAV-based object detection further.

This paper introduces a comprehensive framework aimed at advancing research and policy development in the realm of decarbonization within electric power systems. The framework focuses on three key aspects: carbon accounting, carbon-aware decision-making, and carbon-electricity market design. It addresses existing problems, methods, and proposes solutions. In contrast to traditional pool-based emissions models, our framework proposes a novel flow-based emissions model. This model incorporates the underlying physical power grid and power flows, allowing for accurate carbon accounting at both temporal and spatial scales. This, in turn, facilitates informed decision-making to achieve grid decarbonization goals. The framework is built on a flow-based accounting methodology and utilizes the carbon-aware optimal power flow (C-OPF) technique as a theoretical foundation for decarbonization decision-making. Additionally, the paper explores the potential design of carbon-electricity markets and pricing mechanisms to incentivize decentralized decarbonization actions. The critical issues of data availability, infrastructure development, and considerations of fairness and equity are also discussed. This paper seeks to advance scholarly understanding and foster progress toward achieving sustainable and carbon-free electric power systems.

Built upon the classic optimal power flow (OPF) model, the C-OPF method incorporates carbon emission flow equations and constraints, as well as carbon-related objectives, to jointly optimize power flow and carbon flow. In particular, this paper establishes the invertibility of the carbon flow matrix and proposes modeling and linearization techniques to address the issues of undetermined power flow directions and bilinear terms in the C-OPF model. Additionally, two novel carbon emission models, together with the carbon accounting schemes, for energy storage systems are developed and integrated into the C-OPF model. Ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) service is envisioned to enable use cases with strict reliability and latency requirements in 5G. One approach for enabling URLLC services is to leverage Reinforcement Learning (RL) to efficiently allocate wireless resources. However, with conventional RL methods, the decision variables (though being deployed at various network layers) are typically optimized in the same control loop, leading to significant practical limitations on the control loop's delay as well as excessive signaling and energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a multi-agent Hierarchical RL (HRL) framework that enables the implementation of multi-level policies with different control loop timescales. Agents with faster control loops are deployed closer to the base station, while the ones with slower control loops are at the edge or closer to the core network providing high-level guidelines for low-level actions. On a use case from the prior art, with our HRL framework, we optimized the maximum number of retransmissions and transmission power of industrial devices. Our extensive simulation results on the factory automation scenario show that the HRL framework achieves better performance as the baseline single-agent RL method, with significantly less overhead of signal transmissions and delay compared to the one-agent RL methods.

Deep learning systems have been proposed to improve the objectivity and efficiency of Ki- 67 PI scoring. The challenge is that while very accurate, deep learning techniques suffer from reduced performance when applied to out-of-domain data. This is a critical challenge for clinical translation, as models are typically trained using data available to the vendor, which is not from the target domain. To address this challenge, this study proposes a domain adaptation pipeline that employs an unsupervised framework to generate silver standard (pseudo) labels in the target domain, which is used to augment the gold standard (GS) source domain data. Five training regimes were tested on two validated Ki-67 scoring architectures (UV-Net and piNET), (1) SS Only: trained on target silver standard (SS) labels, (2) GS Only: trained on source GS labels, (3) Mixed: trained on target SS and source GS labels, (4) GS+SS: trained on source GS labels and fine-tuned on target SS labels, and our proposed method (5) SS+GS: trained on source SS labels and fine-tuned on source GS labels. The SS+GS method yielded significantly (p < 0.05) higher PI accuracy (95.9%) and more consistent results compared to the GS Only model on target data. Analysis of t-SNE plots showed features learned by the SS+GS models are more aligned for source and target data, resulting in improved generalization. The proposed pipeline provides an efficient method for learning the target distribution without manual annotations, which are time-consuming and costly to generate for medical images. This framework can be applied to any target site as a per-laboratory calibration method, for widescale deployment.

Purpose: Slice-to-volume registration and super-resolution reconstruction (SVR-SRR) is commonly used to generate 3D volumes of the fetal brain from 2D stacks of slices acquired in multiple orientations. A critical initial step in this pipeline is to select one stack with the minimum motion as a reference for registration. An accurate and unbiased motion assessment (MA) is thus crucial for successful selection. Methods: We presented a MA method that determines the minimum motion stack based on 3D low-rank approximation using CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition. Compared to the current 2D singular value decomposition (SVD) based method that requires flattening stacks into matrices to obtain ranks, in which the spatial information is lost, the CP-based method can factorize 3D stack into low-rank and sparse components in a computationally efficient manner. The difference between the original stack and its low-rank approximation was proposed as the motion indicator. Results: Compared to SVD-based methods, our proposed CP-based MA demonstrated higher sensitivity in detecting small motion with a lower baseline bias. Experiments on randomly simulated motion illustrated that the proposed CP method achieved a higher success rate of 95.45% in identifying the minimum motion stack, compared to SVD-based method with a success rate of 58.18%. We further demonstrated that combining CP-based MA with existing SRR-SVR pipeline significantly improved 3D volume reconstruction. Conclusion: The proposed CP-based MA method showed superior performance compared to SVD-based methods with higher sensitivity to motion, success rate, and lower baseline bias, and can be used as a prior step to improve fetal brain reconstruction.

In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-and-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network in maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is proposed, where ship1 ($\text{S}_1$) and ship2 ($\text{S}_2$) can be viewed as data collecting centers. To enhance the message exchange rate between $\text{S}_1$ and $\text{S}_2$, a problem of maximizing minimum rate is cast, where the variables, namely AF relay beamforming matrix and IRS phase shifts of two time slots, need to be optimized. To achieve a maximum rate, a low-complexity alternately iterative (AI) scheme based on zero forcing and successive convex approximation (LC-ZF-SCA) algorithm is presented. To obtain a significant rate enhancement, a high-performance AI method based on one step, semidefinite programming and penalty SCA (ONS-SDP-PSCA) is proposed. Simulation results show that by the proposed LC-ZF-SCA and ONS-SDP-PSCA methods, the rate of the IRS-and-UAV-assisted AF relay network surpass those of with random phase and only AF relay networks. Moreover, ONS-SDP-PSCA perform better than LC-ZF-SCA in aspect of rate.

Different with conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), simultaneous transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) can reflect and transmit the signals to the receiver. In this paper, to serve more ground users and increase the deployment flexibility, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a STAR-RIS (STAR-RIS-UAV) aided wireless communications for multi-user networks. Energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) protocols are considered to control the reflection and transmission coefficients of STAR-RIS elements. To maximize the sum rate of the STAR-RIS-UAV aided coordinated multipoint cellular system for multi-user networks, the corresponding beamforming vectors as well as transmitted and reflected coefficients matrices are optimized. Specifically, instead of adopting the alternating optimization, we design an iteration method to optimize all variables for both ES and MS protocols at the same time. Simulation results reveal that STAR-RIS-UAV aided wireless communication system has a much higher sum rate than the system with conventional RIS or without RIS. Furthermore, the proposed structure is more flexible than a fixed STAR-RIS and could greatly promote the sum rate.

Since reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered to be a passive reflector for rate performance enhancement, a RIS-aided amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network is presented. By jointly optimizing the beamforming matrix at AF relay and the phase shifts matrices at RIS, two schemes are put forward to address a maximizing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) problem. Firstly, aiming at achieving a high rate, a high-performance alternating optimization (AO) method based on Charnes-Cooper transformation and semidefinite programming (CCT-SDP) is proposed, where the optimization problem is decomposed to three subproblems solved by CCT-SDP and rank-one solutions can be recovered by Gaussian randomization. While the optimization variables in CCT-SDP method are matrices, which leads to extremely high complexity. In order to reduce the complexity, a low-complexity AO scheme based on Dinkelbachs transformation and successive convex approximation (DT-SCA) is put forward, where matrices variables are transformed to vector variables and three decoupled subproblems are solved by DT-SCA. Simulation results verify that compared to two benchmarks (i.e. a RIS-assisted AF relay network with random phase and a AF relay network without RIS), the proposed CCT-SDP and DT-SCA schemes can harvest better rate performance. Furthermore, it is revealed that the rate of the low-complexity DT-SCA method is close to that of CCT-SDP method.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technology for wireless communication composed of a large number of low-cost passive devices with reconfigurable parameters, which can reflect signals with a certain phase shift and is capable of building programmable communication environment. In this paper, to avoid the high hardware cost and energy consumption in spatial modulation (SM), an IRS-aided hybrid secure SM (SSM) system with a hybrid precoder is proposed. To improve the security performance, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing the beamforming at IRS and hybrid precoding at the transmitter. Considering that the SR has no closed form expression, an approximate SR (ASR) expression is derived as the objective function. To improve the SR performance, three IRS beamforming methods, called IRS alternating direction method of multipliers (IRS-ADMM), IRS block coordinate ascend (IRS-BCA) and IRS semi-definite relaxation (IRS-SDR), are proposed. As for the hybrid precoding design, approximated secrecy rate-successive convex approximation (ASR-SCA) method and cut-off rate-gradient ascend (COR-GA) method are proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IRS-SDR and IRS-ADMM beamformers harvest substantial SR performance gains over IRS-BCA. Particularly, the proposed IRS-ADMM and IRS-BCA are of low-complexity at the expense of a little performance loss compared with IRS-SDR. For hybrid precoding, the proposed ASR-SCA performs better than COR-GA in the high transmit power region.

Terahertz (THz) band is expected to be one of the key enabling technologies of the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks because of its abundant available bandwidth and very narrow beam width. Due to high frequency operations, electrically small array apertures are employed, and the signal wavefront becomes spherical in the near-field. Therefore, near-field signal model should be considered for channel acquisition in THz systems. Unlike prior works which mostly ignore the impact of near-field beam-split (NB) and consider either narrowband scenario or far-field models, this paper introduces both a model-based and a model-free techniques for wideband THz channel estimation in the presence of NB. The model-based approach is based on orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm, for which we design an NB-aware dictionary. The key idea is to exploit the angular and range deviations due to the NB. We then employ the OMP algorithm, which accounts for the deviations thereby ipso facto mitigating the effect of NB. We further introduce a federated learning (FL)-based approach as a model-free solution for channel estimation in a multi-user scenario to achieve reduced complexity and training overhead. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation techniques for wideband THz systems in comparison with the existing state-of-the-art techniques.

Compared to passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), active IRS is viewed as a more efficient promising technique to combat the double-fading impact in IRS-aided wireless network. In this paper, in order to boost the achievable rate of user in such a wireless network, three enhanced-rate iterative beamforming methods are proposed by designing the amplifying factors and the corresponding phases at active IRS. The first method, maximizing the simplified signal-to-noise ratio (Max-SSNR) is designed by omitting the cross-term in the definition of rate. Using the Rayleigh-Ritz (RR) theorem, Max-SSNR-RR is proposed to iteratively optimize the norm of beamforming vector and its associated normalized vector. In addition, generalized maximum ratio reflection (GMRR) is presented with a closed-form expression, which is motivated by the maximum ratio combining. To further improve rate, maximizing SNR (Max-SNR) is designed by fractional programming (FP), which is called Max-SNR-FP. Simulation results show that the proposed three methods make an obvious rate enhancement over Max-reflecting signal-to-noise ratio (Max-RSNR), maximum ratio reflection (MRR), selective ratio reflecting (SRR), equal gain reflection (EGR) and passive IRS, and are in increasing order of rate performance as follows: Max-SSNR-RR, GMRR, and Max-SNR-FP.

This correspondence investigates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted wireless communication system with security threats. The RIS is deployed to enhance the secrecy outage probability (SOP) of the data sent to a legitimate user. By deriving the distributions of the received signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs) at the legitimate user and the eavesdropper, we formulate, in a closed-form expression, a tight bound for the SOP under the constraint of discrete phase control at the RIS. The SOP is characterized as a function of the number of antenna elements, $N$, and the number of discrete phase choices, $2^b$. It is revealed that the performance loss in terms of SOP due to the discrete phase control is ignorable for large $N$ when $b\!\geq\!3$. In addition, we explicitly quantify this SOP loss when binary phase shifts with $b\!=\!1$ is utilized. It is identified that increasing the RIS antenna elements by $1.6$ times can achieve the same SOP with binary phase shifts as that by the RIS with ideally continuous phase shifts. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of these theoretical observations.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have have shown state-of-the-art performance for computer vision applications like image classification, segmentation and object detection. Whereas recent advances have shown their vulnerability to manual digital perturbations in the input data, namely adversarial attacks. The accuracy of the networks is significantly affected by the data distribution of their training dataset. Distortions or perturbations on color space of input images generates out-of-distribution data, which make networks more likely to misclassify them. In this work, we propose a color-variation dataset by distorting their RGB color on a subset of the ImageNet with 27 different combinations. The aim of our work is to study the impact of color variation on the performance of DNNs. We perform experiments on several state-of-the-art DNN architectures on the proposed dataset, and the result shows a significant correlation between color variation and loss of accuracy. Furthermore, based on the ResNet50 architecture, we demonstrate some experiments of the performance of recently proposed robust training techniques and strategies, such as Augmix, revisit, and free normalizer, on our proposed dataset. Experimental results indicate that these robust training techniques can improve the robustness of deep networks to color variation.

Fall detection for the elderly is a well-researched problem with several proposed solutions, including wearable and non-wearable techniques. While the existing techniques have excellent detection rates, their adoption by the target population is lacking due to the need for wearing devices and user privacy concerns. Our paper provides a novel, non-wearable, non-intrusive, and scalable solution for fall detection, deployed on an autonomous mobile robot equipped with a microphone. The proposed method uses ambient sound input recorded in people's homes. We specifically target the bathroom environment as it is highly prone to falls and where existing techniques cannot be deployed without jeopardizing user privacy. The present work develops a solution based on a Transformer architecture that takes noisy sound input from bathrooms and classifies it into fall/no-fall class with an accuracy of 0.8673. Further, the proposed approach is extendable to other indoor environments, besides bathrooms and is suitable for deploying in elderly homes, hospitals, and rehabilitation facilities without requiring the user to wear any device or be constantly "watched" by the sensors.

For the demonstration of ultra-wideband bandwidth and pencil-beamforming, the terahertz (THz)-band has been envisioned as one of the key enabling technologies for the sixth generation networks. However, the acquisition of the THz channel entails several unique challenges such as severe path loss and beam-split. Prior works usually employ ultra-massive arrays and additional hardware components comprised of time-delayers to compensate for these loses. In order to provide a cost-effective solution, this paper introduces a sparse-Bayesian-learning (SBL) technique for joint channel and beam-split estimation. Specifically, we first model the beam-split as an array perturbation inspired from array signal processing. Next, a low-complexity approach is developed by exploiting the line-of-sight-dominant feature of THz channel to reduce the computational complexity involved in the proposed SBL technique for channel estimation (SBCE). Additionally, based on federated-learning, we implement a model-free technique to the proposed model-based SBCE solution. Further to that, we examine the near-field considerations of THz channel, and introduce the range-dependent near-field beam-split. The theoretical performance bounds, i.e., Cramér-Rao lower bounds, are derived both for near- and far-field parameters, e.g., user directions, beam-split and ranges. Numerical simulations demonstrate that SBCE outperforms the existing approaches and exhibits lower hardware cost.

Like most kernel adaptive filters based on stochastic gradient descent, this algorithm uses a preset number of random Fourier features to save computation cost. However, as an extra flexibility, it can adapt the inherent kernel bandwidth in the random Fourier features in an online manner. This adaptation mechanism allows to alleviate the problem of selecting the kernel bandwidth beforehand for the benefit of an improved tracking in non-stationary circumstances. Simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm achieves a performance improvement in terms of convergence rate, error at steady-state and tracking ability over other kernel adaptive filters with preset kernel bandwidth.

This paper addresses two major challenges in terahertz (THz) channel estimation: the beam-split phenomenon, i.e., beam misalignment because of frequency-independent analog beamformers, and computational complexity because of the usage of ultra-massive number of antennas to compensate propagation losses. Data-driven techniques are known to mitigate the complexity of this problem but usually require the transmission of the datasets from the users to a central server entailing huge communication overhead. In this work, we introduce a federated multi-task learning (FMTL), wherein the users transmit only the model parameters instead of the whole dataset, for THz channel and user direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation to improve the communications-efficiency. We first propose a novel beamspace support alignment technique for channel estimation with beam-split correction. Then, the channel and DoA information are used as labels to train an FMTL model. By exploiting the sparsity of the THz channel, the proposed approach is implemented with fewer pilot signals than the traditional techniques. Compared to the previous works, our FMTL approach provides higher channel estimation accuracy as well as approximately 25 (32) times lower model (channel) training overhead, respectively.

With the deployment of the fifth generation (5G) wireless systems gathering momentum across the world, possible technologies for 6G are under active research discussions. In particular, the role of machine learning (ML) in 6G is expected to enhance and aid emerging applications such as virtual and augmented reality, vehicular autonomy, and computer vision. This will result in large segments of wireless data traffic comprising image, video and speech. The ML algorithms process these for classification/recognition/estimation through the learning models located on cloud servers. This requires wireless transmission of data from edge devices to the cloud server. Channel estimation, handled separately from recognition step, is critical for accurate learning performance. Toward combining the learning for both channel and the ML data, we introduce implicit channel learning to perform the ML tasks without estimating the wireless channel. Here, the ML models are trained with channel-corrupted datasets in place of nominal data. Without channel estimation, the proposed approach exhibits approximately 60% improvement in image and speech classification tasks for diverse scenarios such as millimeter wave and IEEE 802.11p vehicular channels.

Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is an important tool in characterizing tissue microstructure based on biophysical models, which are complex and highly non-linear. Resolving microstructures with optimization techniques is prone to estimation errors and requires dense sampling in the q-space. Deep learning based approaches have been proposed to overcome these limitations. Motivated by the superior performance of the Transformer, in this work, we present a learning-based framework based on Transformer, namely, a Microstructure Estimation Transformer with Sparse Coding (METSC) for dMRI-based microstructure estimation with downsampled q-space data. To take advantage of the Transformer while addressing its limitation in large training data requirements, we explicitly introduce an inductive bias - model bias into the Transformer using a sparse coding technique to facilitate the training process. Thus, the METSC is composed with three stages, an embedding stage, a sparse representation stage, and a map** stage. The embedding stage is a Transformer-based structure that encodes the signal to ensure the voxel is represented effectively. In the sparse representation stage, a dictionary is constructed by solving a sparse reconstruction problem that unfolds the Iterative Hard Thresholding (IHT) process. The map** stage is essentially a decoder that computes the microstructural parameters from the output of the second stage, based on the weighted sum of normalized dictionary coefficients where the weights are also learned. We tested our framework on two dMRI models with downsampled q-space data, including the intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) model and the neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) model. The proposed method achieved up to 11.25 folds of acceleration in scan time and outperformed the other state-of-the-art learning-based methods.

Multi-slice magnetic resonance images of the fetal brain are usually contaminated by severe and arbitrary fetal and maternal motion. Hence, stable and robust motion correction is necessary to reconstruct high-resolution 3D fetal brain volume for clinical diagnosis and quantitative analysis. However, the conventional registration-based correction has a limited capture range and is insufficient for detecting relatively large motions. Here, we present a novel Affinity Fusion-based Framework for Iteratively Random Motion (AFFIRM) correction of the multi-slice fetal brain MRI. It learns the sequential motion from multiple stacks of slices and integrates the features between 2D slices and reconstructed 3D volume using affinity fusion, which resembles the iterations between slice-to-volume registration and volumetric reconstruction in the regular pipeline. The method accurately estimates the motion regardless of brain orientations and outperforms other state-of-the-art learning-based methods on the simulated motion-corrupted data, with a 48.4% reduction of mean absolute error for rotation and 61.3% for displacement. We then incorporated AFFIRM into the multi-resolution slice-to-volume registration and tested it on the real-world fetal MRI scans at different gestation stages. The results indicated that adding AFFIRM to the conventional pipeline improved the success rate of fetal brain super-resolution reconstruction from 77.2% to 91.9%.

To enhance the sum rate performance, three power allocation (PA) strategies are proposed. Firstly, a method of maximizing sum rate (Max-SR) is proposed to jointly optimize the PA factors of user U1, user U2 and relay station (RS). To further improve the sum rate performance, two high-performance schemes, namely maximizing minimum sum rate (Max-Min-SR) and maximizing sum rate with rate constraint (Max-SR-RC), are presented. Simulation results show that the proposed three methods outperform the equal power allocation (EPA) method in terms of sum rate performance. Human activity detection from digital videos presents many challenges to the computer vision and image processing communities. Recently, many methods have been developed to detect human activities with varying degree of success. Yet, the general human activity detection problem remains very challenging, especially when the methods need to work 'in the wild' (e.g., without having precise control over the imaging geometry). The thesis explores phase-based solutions for (i) detecting faces, (ii) back of the heads, (iii) joint detection of faces and back of the heads, and (iv) whether the head is looking to the left or the right, using standard video cameras without any control on the imaging geometry. The proposed phase-based approach is based on the development of simple and robust methods that rely on the use of Amplitude Modulation- Frequency Modulation (AM-FM) models. The approach is validated using video frames extracted from the Advancing Out-of-school Learning in Mathematics and Engineering (AOLME) project. The dataset consisted of 13,265 images from ten students looking at the camera, and 6,122 images from five students looking away from the camera. For the students facing the camera, the method was able to correctly classify 97.1% of them looking to the left and 95.9% of them looking to the right. For the students facing the back of the camera, the method was able to correctly classify 87.6% of them looking to the left and 93.3% of them looking to the right. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment among elderly in the world. Early detection of AMD is of great importance, as the vision loss caused by this disease is irreversible and permanent. Color fundus photography is the most cost-effective imaging modality to screen for retinal disorders. Cutting edge deep learning based algorithms have been recently developed for automatically detecting AMD from fundus images. However, there are still lack of a comprehensive annotated dataset and standard evaluation benchmarks. To deal with this issue, we set up the Automatic Detection challenge on Age-related Macular degeneration (ADAM), which was held as a satellite event of the ISBI 2020 conference. The ADAM challenge consisted of four tasks which cover the main aspects of detecting and characterizing AMD from fundus images, including detection of AMD, detection and segmentation of optic disc, localization of fovea, and detection and segmentation of lesions. As part of the challenge, we have released a comprehensive dataset of 1200 fundus images with AMD diagnostic labels, pixel-wise segmentation masks for both optic disc and AMD-related lesions (drusen, exudates, hemorrhages and scars, among others), as well as the coordinates corresponding to the location of the macular fovea. A uniform evaluation framework has been built to make a fair comparison of different models using this dataset. During the challenge, 610 results were submitted for online evaluation, with 11 teams finally participating in the onsite challenge. This paper introduces the challenge, the dataset and the evaluation methods, as well as summarizes the participating methods and analyzes their results for each task. In particular, we observed that the ensembling strategy and the incorporation of clinical domain knowledge were the key to improve the performance of the deep learning models.

We use multiple image representations to solve the problem. We use FM components to separate each group from background groups, AM-FM components for detecting the back-of-the-head, and YOLO for face detection. We use classroom videos from four different groups to validate our approach. Our use of multiple representations is shown to be significantly more accurate than the use of YOLO alone.

We consider the mobile localization problem in future millimeter-wave wireless networks with distributed Base Stations (BSs) based on multi-antenna channel state information (CSI). For this problem, we propose a Semi-supervised tdistributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (St-SNE) algorithm to directly embed the high-dimensional CSI samples into the 2D geographical map. We evaluate the performance of St-SNE in a simulated urban outdoor millimeter-wave radio access network. Our results show that St-SNE achieves a mean localization error of 6.8 m with only 5% of labeled CSI samples in a 200*200 m^2 area with a ray-tracing channel model. St-SNE does not require accurate synchronization among multiple BSs, and is promising for future large-scale millimeter-wave localization.

Nuclei detection is a key task in Ki67 proliferation index estimation in breast cancer images. Deep learning algorithms have shown strong potential in nuclei detection tasks. However, they face challenges when applied to pathology images with dense medium and overlap** nuclei since fine details are often diluted or completely lost by early maxpooling layers. This paper introduces an optimized UV-Net architecture, specifically developed to recover nuclear details with high-resolution through feature preservation for Ki67 proliferation index computation. UV-Net achieves an average F1-score of 0.83 on held-out test patch data, while other architectures obtain 0.74-0.79. On tissue microarrays (unseen) test data obtained from multiple centers, UV-Net's accuracy exceeds other architectures by a wide margin, including 9-42\% on Ontario Veterinary College, 7-35\% on Protein Atlas and 0.3-3\% on University Health Network.

In this paper, we investigate the anti-jamming problem of a directional modulation (DM) system with the aid of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). As an efficient tool to combat malicious jamming, receive beamforming (RBF) is usually designed to be on null-space of jamming channel or covariance matrix from Mallory to Bob. Thus, it is very necessary to estimate the receive jamming covariance matrix (JCM) at Bob. To achieve a precise JCM estimate, three JCM estimation methods, including eigenvalue decomposition (EVD), parametric estimation method by gradient descend (PEM-GD) and parametric estimation method by alternating optimization (PEM-AO), are proposed. Here, the proposed EVD is under rank-2 constraint of JCM. The PEM-GD method fully explores the structure features of JCM and the PEM-AO is to decrease the computational complexity of the former via dimensionality reduction. The simulation results show that in low and medium jamming-noise ratio (JNR) regions, the proposed three methods perform better than the existing sample covariance matrix method. The proposed PEM-GD and PEM-AO outperform EVD method and existing clutter and disturbance covariance estimator RCML.

We study the problem of detecting talking activities in collaborative learning videos. Our approach uses head detection and projections of the log-magnitude of optical flow vectors to reduce the problem to a simple classification of small projection images without the need for training complex, 3-D activity classification systems. The small projection images are then easily classified using a simple majority vote of standard classifiers. For talking detection, our proposed approach is shown to significantly outperform single activity systems. We have an overall accuracy of 59% compared to 42% for Temporal Segment Network (TSN) and 45% for Convolutional 3D (C3D). In addition, our method is able to detect multiple talking instances from multiple speakers, while also detecting the speakers themselves.

Real-world low-light images suffer from two main degradations, namely, inevitable noise and poor visibility. Since the noise exhibits different levels, its estimation has been implemented in recent works when enhancing low-light images from raw Bayer space. When it comes to sRGB color space, the noise estimation becomes more complicated due to the effect of the image processing pipeline. Nevertheless, most existing enhancing algorithms in sRGB space only focus on the low visibility problem or suppress the noise under a hypothetical noise level, leading them impractical due to the lack of robustness. To address this issue,we propose an adaptive unfolding total variation network (UTVNet), which approximates the noise level from the real sRGB low-light image by learning the balancing parameter in the model-based denoising method with total variation regularization. Meanwhile, we learn the noise level map by unrolling the corresponding minimization process for providing the inferences of smoothness and fidelity constraints. Guided by the noise level map, our UTVNet can recover finer details and is more capable to suppress noise in real captured low-light scenes. Extensive experiments on real-world low-light images clearly demonstrate the superior performance of UTVNet over state-of-the-art methods.

By moving the services and functions located in the cloud to the proximity of users, edge computing can provide powerful communication, storage, networking, and communication capacity. The resource scheduling in edge computing, which is the key to the success of edge computing systems, has attracted increasing research interests. In this paper, we survey the state-of-the-art research findings to know the research progress in this field. Specifically, we present the architecture of edge computing, under which different collaborative manners for resource scheduling are discussed. Particularly, we introduce a unified model before summarizing the current works on resource scheduling from three research issues, including computation offloading, resource allocation, and resource provisioning. Based on two modes of operation, i.e., centralized and distributed modes, different techniques for resource scheduling are discussed and compared. Also, we summarize the main performance indicators based on the surveyed literature. To shed light on the significance of resource scheduling in real-world scenarios, we discuss several typical application scenarios involved in the research of resource scheduling in edge computing. Finally, we highlight some open research challenges yet to be addressed and outline several open issues as the future research direction.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising solution to build a programmable wireless environment for future communication systems, in which the reflector elements steer the incident signal in fully customizable ways by passive beamforming. In this paper, an IRS-aided secure spatial modulation (SM) is proposed, where the IRS perform passive beamforming and information transfer simultaneously by adjusting the on-off states of the reflecting elements. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize the average secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing the passive beamforming at IRS and the transmit power at transmitter under the consideration that the direct pathes channels from transmitter to receivers are obstructed by obstacles. As the expression of SR is complex, we derive a newly fitting expression (NASR) for the expression of traditional approximate SR (TASR), which has simpler closed-form and more convenient for subsequent optimization. Based on the above two fitting expressions, three beamforming methods, called maximizing NASR via successive convex approximation (Max-NASR-SCA), maximizing NASR via dual ascent (Max-NASR-DA) and maximizing TASR via semi-definite relaxation (Max-TASR-SDR) are proposed to improve the SR performance. Additionally, two transmit power design (TPD) methods are proposed based on the above two approximate SR expressions, called Max-NASR-TPD and Max-TASR-TPD. Simulation results show that the proposed Max-NASR-DA and Max-NASR-SCA IRS beamformers harvest substantial SR performance gains over Max-TASR-SDR. For TPD, the proposed Max-NASR-TPD performs better than Max-TASR-TPD. Particularly, the Max-NASR-TPD has a closed-form solution.

Traditional approaches are based on sparse LU factorization, which is inherently sequential. In this paper, an inverse-based network solution is proposed by a hierarchical method for computing and store the approximate inverse of the conductance matrix in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations. The proposed method can also efficiently update the inverse by modifying only local sub-matrices to reflect changes in the network, e.g., loss of a line. Experiments on a series of simplified 179-bus Western Interconnection demonstrate the advantages of the proposed methods.

3D ultrasound (US) has become prevalent due to its rich spatial and diagnostic information not contained in 2D US. Moreover, 3D US can contain multiple standard planes (SPs) in one shot. Thus, automatically localizing SPs in 3D US has the potential to improve user-independence and scanning-efficiency. However, manual SP localization in 3D US is challenging because of the low image quality, huge search space and large anatomical variability. In this work, we propose a novel multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) framework to simultaneously localize multiple SPs in 3D US. Our contribution is four-fold. First, our proposed method is general and it can accurately localize multiple SPs in different challenging US datasets. Second, we equip the MARL system with a recurrent neural network (RNN) based collaborative module, which can strengthen the communication among agents and learn the spatial relationship among planes effectively. Third, we explore to adopt the neural architecture search (NAS) to automatically design the network architecture of both the agents and the collaborative module. Last, we believe we are the first to realize automatic SP localization in pelvic US volumes, and note that our approach can handle both normal and abnormal uterus cases. Extensively validated on two challenging datasets of the uterus and fetal brain, our proposed method achieves the average localization accuracy of 7.03 degrees/1.59mm and 9.75 degrees/1.19mm. Experimental results show that our light-weight MARL model has higher accuracy than state-of-the-art methods.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are envisioned to be a disruptive wireless communication technique that is capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In this paper, we study a free-space RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system in far-field operation. To maximize the received power from the physical and electromagnetic nature point of view, a comprehensive optimization, including beamforming of the transmitter, phase shifts of the RIS, orientation and position of the RIS is formulated and addressed. After exploiting the property of line-of-sight (LoS) links, we derive closed-form solutions of beamforming and phase shifts. For the non-trivial RIS position optimization problem in arbitrary three-dimensional space, a dimensional-reducing theory is proved. The simulation results show that the proposed closed-form beamforming and phase shifts approach the upper bound of the received power. The robustness of our proposed solutions in terms of the perturbation is also verified. Moreover, the RIS significantly enhances the performance of the mmWave/THz communication system.

Recently, passive unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) localization has become popular due to mobility and convenience. In this paper, we consider a scenario of using distributed drone cluster to estimate the position of a passive emitter via received signal strength (RSS). First, a distributed majorizeminimization (DMM) RSS-based localization method is proposed. To accelerate its convergence, a tight upper bound of the objective function from the primary one is derived. Furthermore, to reduce communication overhead, a distributed estimation scheme using the Fisher information matrix (DEF) is presented, with only requiring one-round communication between edge UAVs and center UAV. Additionally, a local search solution is used as the initial value of DEF. Simulation results show that the proposed DMM performs better than the existing distributed Gauss-Newton method (DGN) in terms of root of mean square error (RMSE) under a limited low communication overhead constraint. Moreover, the proposed DEF performs much better than MM in terms of RMSE, but has a higher computational complexity than the latter.
