In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on the vulnerability of ASR systems, revealing that black-box adversarial example attacks pose significant threats to real-world ASR systems. However, most existing black-box attacks rely on queries to the target ASRs, which is impractical when queries are not permitted. In this paper, we propose ZQ-Attack, a transfer-based adversarial attack on ASR systems in the zero-query black-box setting. Through a comprehensive review and categorization of modern ASR technologies, we first meticulously select surrogate ASRs of diverse types to generate adversarial examples. Following this, ZQ-Attack initializes the adversarial perturbation with a scaled target command audio, rendering it relatively imperceptible while maintaining effectiveness. Subsequently, to achieve high transferability of adversarial perturbations, we propose a sequential ensemble optimization algorithm, which iteratively optimizes the adversarial perturbation on each surrogate model, leveraging collaborative information from other models. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate ZQ-Attack. In the over-the-line setting, ZQ-Attack achieves a 100% success rate of attack (SRoA) with an average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 21.91dB on 4 online speech recognition services, and attains an average SRoA of 100% and SNR of 19.67dB on 16 open-source ASRs. For commercial intelligent voice control devices, ZQ-Attack also achieves a 100% SRoA with an average SNR of 15.77dB in the over-the-air setting.

Blasted rock material serves a critical role in various engineering applications, yet the phenomenon of segregation-where particle sizes vary significantly along the gradient of a quarry pile-presents challenges for optimizing quarry material storage and handling. This study introduces an advanced image analysis methodology to characterize such segregation of rock fragments. The accurate delineation of detailed rock fragment size distributions was achieved through the analysis of drone-captured imagery, coupled with the application of an enhanced Unet semantic segmentation model integrated with an expansion-based post-processing technique. The quarry slope was stratified into four vertical sections, with the size distribution of each section quantified via ellipsoid shape approximations. Our results disclose pronounced vertical segregation patterns, with finer particles concentrated in the upper slope regions and coarser particles in the lower. Utilizing relative characteristic diameters, we offered insight into the degree of segregation, thereby illustrating the spatial heterogeneity in fragment size more clearly. The techniques outlined in this study deliver a scalable and accurate method for assessing fragment size distribution, with the potential to better inform resource management and operational decisions in quarry management.

With high penetrations of renewable energy and power electronics converters, less predictable operating conditions and strong uncertainties in under-frequency events pose challenges for emergency frequency control (EFC). On the other hand, the fast adjustability of converter-based sources presents opportunities to reduce economic losses from traditional load shedding for EFC. By integrating DC power emergency support, a data-driven coordinated AC/DC control strategy for frequency safety - Coordinated Emergency Frequency Control (CEFC) - has been designed. CEFC coordinates both the initiation and control amount of emergency DC power support (EDCPS) and traditional load shedding. Based on real-time power system response data, CEFC ensures system frequency safety at a minimum control cost under non-envisioned operating conditions and large power deficits. A sufficient condition where data-driven modeling errors do not affect the precision of the control strategy for power system frequency is rigorously provided. Simulation results demonstrate CEFC's adaptability, prediction accuracy, and control effectiveness.

This study focuses on the analysis of signals containing multiple components with crossover instantaneous frequencies (IF). This problem was initially solved with the chirplet transform (CT). Also, it can be sharpened by adding the synchrosqueezing step, which is called the synchrosqueezed chirplet transform (SCT). However, we found that the SCT goes wrong with the high chirp modulation signal due to the wrong estimation of the IF. In this paper, we present the improvement of the post-transformation of the CT. The main goal of this paper is to amend the estimation introduced in the SCT and carry out the high-order synchrosqueezed chirplet transform. The proposed method reduces the wrong estimation when facing a stronger variety of chirp-modulated multi-component signals. The theoretical analysis of the new reassignment ingredient is provided. Numerical experiments on some synthetic signals are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed high-order SCT.

The need for fully autonomous mobile robots has surged over the past decade, with the imperative of ensuring safe navigation in a dynamic setting emerging as a primary challenge impeding advancements in this domain. In this paper, a Safety Critical Model Predictive Control based on Dynamic Feedback Linearization tailored to the application of differential drive robots with two wheels is proposed to generate control signals that result in obstacle-free paths. A barrier function introduces a safety constraint to the optimization problem of the Model Predictive Control (MPC) to prevent collisions. Due to the intrinsic nonlinearities of the differential drive robots, computational complexity while implementing a Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) arises. To facilitate the real-time implementation of the optimization problem and to accommodate the underactuated nature of the robot, a combination of Linear Model Predictive Control (LMPC) and Dynamic Feedback Linearization (DFL) is proposed. The MPC problem is formulated on a linear equivalent model of the differential drive robot rendered by the DFL controller. The analysis of the closed-loop stability and recursive feasibility of the proposed control design is discussed. Numerical experiments illustrate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed control synthesis in avoiding obstacles with respect to the benchmark of using Euclidean distance constraints. Wireless federated learning (FL) relies on efficient uplink communications to aggregate model updates across distributed edge devices. Over-the-air computation (a.k.a. AirComp) has emerged as a promising approach for addressing the scalability challenge of FL over wireless links with limited communication resources. Unlike conventional methods, AirComp allows multiple edge devices to transmit uplink signals simultaneously, enabling the parameter server to directly decode the average global model. However, existing AirComp solutions are intrinsically analog, while modern wireless systems predominantly adopt digital modulations. Consequently, careful constellation designs are necessary to accurately decode the sum model updates without ambiguity. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end communication system supporting AirComp with digital modulation, aiming to overcome the challenges associated with accurate decoding of the sum signal with constellation designs. We leverage autoencoder network structures and explore the joint optimization of transmitter and receiver components. Our approach fills an important gap in the context of accurately decoding the sum signal in digital modulation-based AirComp, which can advance the deployment of FL in contemporary wireless systems.

In this work, we propose a cascaded scheme of linear Model prediction Control (MPC) based on Control Barrier Functions (CBF) with Dynamic Feedback Linearization (DFL) for Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). CBF is a tool that allows enforcement of forward invariance of a set using Lyapunov-like functions to ensure safety. The First control synthesis that employed CBF was based on Quadratic Program (QP) that modifies the existing controller to satisfy the safety requirements. However, the CBF-QP-based controllers leading to longer detours and undesirable transient performance. Recent contributions utilize the framework of MPC benefiting from the prediction capabilities and constraints imposed on the state and control inputs. Due to the intrinsic nonlinearities of the dynamics of robotics systems, all the existing MPC-CBF solutions rely on nonlinear MPC formulations or operate on less accurate linear models. In contrast, our novel solution unlocks the benefits of linear MPC-CBF while considering the full underactuated dynamics without any linear approximations. The cascaded scheme converts the problem of safe VTOL-UAV navigation to a Quadratic Constraint Quadratic Programming (QCQP) problem solved efficiently by off-the-shelf solvers. The closed-loop stability and recursive feasibility is proved along with numerical simulations showing the effective and robust solutions. The significant electrical distance between wind power collection points and the main grid poses challenges for weak grid-connected wind power systems. A new type of voltage oscillation phenomenon induced by repeated low voltage ride-through (LVRT) of the wind turbine has been observed, threatening the safe and stable operation of such power systems. Therefore, exploring dynamic evolution mechanisms and develo** stability analysis approaches for this phenomenon have become pressing imperatives. This paper introduces switched system theory for dynamic modeling, mechanism elucidation, and stability analysis of the repeated LVRT process. Firstly, considering the external connection impedance and internal control dynamics, a novel wind turbine grid-side converter (WT-GSC) switched system model is established to quantitatively characterize the evolution dynamic and mechanism of the voltage oscillation. Subsequently, a sufficient stability criterion and index grounded in the common Lyapunov function are proposed for stability analysis and assessment of the WT-GSC switched system. Moreover, to enhance the system stability, the Sobol' global sensitivity analysis method is adopted to identify dominant parameters, which can be further optimized via the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Finally, simulations conducted on a modified IEEE 39-bus test system verify the effectiveness of the proposed dynamic modeling and stability analysis methods.

Dynamic radio resource management (RRM) in wireless networks presents significant challenges, particularly in the context of Radio Access Network (RAN) slicing. This technology, crucial for catering to varying user requirements, often grapples with complex optimization scenarios. Existing Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches, while achieving good performance in RAN slicing, typically rely on online algorithms or behavior cloning. These methods necessitate either continuous environmental interactions or access to high-quality datasets, hindering their practical deployment. Towards addressing these limitations, this paper introduces offline RL to solving the RAN slicing problem, marking a significant shift towards more feasible and adaptive RRM methods. Thin film deposition is an essential step in the semiconductor process. During preparation or loading, the substrate is exposed to the air unavoidably, which has motivated studies of the process control to remove the surface oxide before thin film deposition. Optimizing the deoxidation process in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for a random substrate is a multidimensional challenge and sometimes controversial. Due to variations in semiconductor materials and growth processes, the determination of substrate deoxidation temperature is highly dependent on the grower's expertise; the same substrate may yield inconsistent results when evaluated by different growers. Here, we employ a machine learning (ML) hybrid convolution and vision transformer (CNN-ViT) model. This model utilizes reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) video as input to determine the deoxidation status of the substrate as output, enabling automated substrate deoxidation under a controlled architecture. This also extends to the successful application of deoxidation processes on other substrates. Furthermore, we showcase the potential of models trained on data from a single MBE equipment to achieve high-accuracy deployment on other equipment. In contrast to traditional methods, our approach holds exceptional practical value. It standardizes deoxidation temperatures across various equipment and substrate materials, advancing the standardization research process in semiconductor preparation, a significant milestone in thin film growth technology. The concepts and methods demonstrated in this work are anticipated to revolutionize semiconductor manufacturing in optoelectronics and microelectronics industries by applying them to diverse material growth processes.

Video semantic segmentation is a pivotal aspect of video representation learning. However, significant domain shifts present a challenge in effectively learning invariant spatio-temporal features across the labeled source domain and unlabeled target domain for video semantic segmentation. To solve the challenge, we propose a novel DA-STC method for domain adaptive video semantic segmentation, which incorporates a bidirectional multi-level spatio-temporal fusion module and a category-aware spatio-temporal feature alignment module to facilitate consistent learning for domain-invariant features. Firstly, we perform bidirectional spatio-temporal fusion at the image sequence level and shallow feature level, leading to the construction of two fused intermediate video domains. This prompts the video semantic segmentation model to consistently learn spatio-temporal features of shared patch sequences which are influenced by domain-specific contexts, thereby mitigating the feature gap between the source and target domain. Secondly, we propose a category-aware feature alignment module to promote the consistency of spatio-temporal features, facilitating adaptation to the target domain. Specifically, we adaptively aggregate the domain-specific deep features of each category along spatio-temporal dimensions, which are further constrained to achieve cross-domain intra-class feature alignment and inter-class feature separation. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, which achieves state-of-the-art mIOUs on multiple challenging benchmarks. Furthermore, we extend the proposed DA-STC to the image domain, where it also exhibits superior performance for domain adaptive semantic segmentation. The source code and models will be made available at \url{https://github.com/ZHE-SAPI/DA-STC}.

The recent development of reinforcement learning (RL) has boosted the adoption of online RL for wireless radio resource management (RRM). However, online RL algorithms require direct interactions with the environment, which may be undesirable given the potential performance loss due to the unavoidable exploration in RL. In this work, we first investigate the use of \emph{offline} RL algorithms in solving the RRM problem. We evaluate several state-of-the-art offline RL algorithms, including behavior constrained Q-learning (BCQ), conservative Q-learning (CQL), and implicit Q-learning (IQL), for a specific RRM problem that aims at maximizing a linear combination {of sum and} 5-percentile rates via user scheduling. We observe that the performance of offline RL for the RRM problem depends critically on the behavior policy used for data collection, and further propose a novel offline RL solution that leverages heterogeneous datasets collected by different behavior policies. We show that with a proper mixture of the datasets, offline RL can produce a near-optimal RL policy even when all involved behavior policies are highly suboptimal.

Myocardial motion tracking stands as an essential clinical tool in the prevention and detection of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the foremost cause of death globally. However, current techniques suffer from incomplete and inaccurate motion estimation of the myocardium in both spatial and temporal dimensions, hindering the early identification of myocardial dysfunction. To address these challenges, this paper introduces the Neural Cardiac Motion Field (NeuralCMF). NeuralCMF leverages implicit neural representation (INR) to model the 3D structure and the comprehensive 6D forward/backward motion of the heart. This method surpasses pixel-wise limitations by offering the capability to continuously query the precise shape and motion of the myocardium at any specific point throughout the cardiac cycle, enhancing the detailed analysis of cardiac dynamics beyond traditional speckle tracking. Notably, NeuralCMF operates without the need for paired datasets, and its optimization is self-supervised through the physics knowledge priors in both space and time dimensions, ensuring compatibility with both 2D and 3D echocardiogram video inputs. Experimental validations across three representative datasets support the robustness and innovative nature of the NeuralCMF, marking significant advantages over existing state-of-the-art methods in cardiac imaging and motion tracking.

Computational imaging methods empower modern microscopy with the ability of producing high-resolution, large field-of-view, aberration-free images. One of the dominant computational label-free imaging methods, Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM), effectively increases the spatial-bandwidth product of conventional microscopy by using multiple tilted illuminations to achieve high-throughput imaging. However, its iterative reconstruction method is prone to parameter selection, can be computationally expensive and tends to fail under excessive aberrations. Recently, spatial Kramers-Kronig methods show it is possible to analytically reconstruct complex field but lacks the ability of correcting aberrations or providing extended resolution enhancement. Here, we present a closed-form method, termed APIC, which weds the strengths of both methods. A new analytical phase retrieval framework is established in APIC, which demonstrates, for the first time, the feasibility of analytically reconstructing the complex field associated with darkfield measurements. In addition, APIC can analytically retrieve complex aberrations of an imaging system with no additional hardware. By avoiding iterative algorithms, APIC requires no human designed convergence metric and always obtains a closed-form complex field solution. The faithfulness and correctness of APIC's reconstruction are guaranteed due to its analytical nature. We experimentally demonstrate that APIC gives correct reconstruction result while FPM fails to do so when constrained to the same number of measurements. Meanwhile, APIC achieves 2.8 times faster computation using image tile size of 256 (length-wise). We also demonstrate APIC is unprecedentedly robust against aberrations compared to FPM - APIC is capable of addressing aberration whose maximal phase difference exceeds 3.8$π$ when using a NA 0.25 objective in experiment.

In this paper, a three-machine equivalent method applicable to asymmetrical faults is proposed considering the operating wind speed and fault severity. Firstly, direct-driven permanent magnet synchronous generator wind turbines (PMSGs) are clustered based on their different active power response characteristics considering the wind speed, the fault severity, and the negative sequence control strategy. Further, single-machine equivalent methods are proposed for each cluster of PMSGs. In particular, for the PMSGs with ramp recovery characteristics, a single-machine equivalent model with multi-segmented slope recovery is proposed, which can more accurately reflect the characteristics of the wind farm during the fault recovery. Moreover, an iterative simulation method is proposed to obtain the required clustering indicators before the actual occurrence of faults. Therefore, the proposed equivalent method can be used to analyze any anticipated contingency. Eventually, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on a modified IEEE 39-bus system.

Self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) have properties highly valuable for develo** various optoelectronic devices such as QD lasers and single photon sources. The applications strongly rely on the density and quality of these dots, which has motivated studies of the growth process control to realize high-quality epi-wafers and devices. Establishing the process parameters in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for a specific density of QDs is a multidimensional optimization challenge, usually addressed through time-consuming and iterative trial-and-error. Here, we report a real-time feedback control method to realize the growth of QDs with arbitrary density, which is fully automated and intelligent. We developed a machine learning (ML) model named 3D ResNet 50 trained using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) videos as input instead of static images and providing real-time feedback on surface morphologies for process control. As a result, we demonstrated that ML from previous growth could predict the post-growth density of QDs, by successfully tuning the QD densities in near-real time from 1.5E10 cm-2 down to 3.8E8 cm-2 or up to 1.4E11 cm-2. Compared to traditional methods, our approach, with in situ tuning capabilities and excellent reliability, can dramatically expedite the material optimization process and improve the reproducibility of MBE, constituting significant progress for thin film growth techniques. The concepts and methodologies proved feasible in this work are promising to be applied to a variety of material growth processes, which will revolutionize semiconductor manufacturing for optoelectronic and microelectronic industries.

We propose a privacy-preserving uplink over-the-air computation (AirComp) method, termed FLORAS, for single-input single-output (SISO) wireless federated learning (FL) systems. From the perspective of communication designs, FLORAS eliminates the requirement of channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) by leveraging the properties of orthogonal sequences. From the privacy perspective, we prove that FLORAS offers both item-level and client-level differential privacy (DP) guarantees. Moreover, by properly adjusting the system parameters, FLORAS can flexibly achieve different DP levels at no additional cost. A new FL convergence bound is derived which, combined with the privacy guarantees, allows for a smooth tradeoff between the achieved convergence rate and differential privacy levels. Experimental results demonstrate the advantages of FLORAS compared with the baseline AirComp method, and validate that the analytical results can guide the design of privacy-preserving FL with different tradeoff requirements on the model convergence and privacy levels.

Most existing studies on linear bandits focus on the one-dimensional characterization of the overall system. While being representative, this formulation may fail to model applications with high-dimensional but favorable structures, such as the low-rank tensor representation for recommender systems. To address this limitation, this work studies a general tensor bandits model, where actions and system parameters are represented by tensors as opposed to vectors, and we particularly focus on the case that the unknown system tensor is low-rank. A novel bandit algorithm, coined TOFU (Tensor Optimism in the Face of Uncertainty), is developed. TOFU first leverages flexible tensor regression techniques to estimate low-dimensional subspaces associated with the system tensor. These estimates are then utilized to convert the original problem to a new one with norm constraints on its system parameters. Lastly, a norm-constrained bandit subroutine is adopted by TOFU, which utilizes these constraints to avoid exploring the entire high-dimensional parameter space. Theoretical analyses show that TOFU improves the best-known regret upper bound by a multiplicative factor that grows exponentially in the system order. A novel performance lower bound is also established, which further corroborates the efficiency of TOFU.

Most of the existing federated multi-armed bandits (FMAB) designs are based on the presumption that clients will implement the specified design to collaborate with the server. In reality, however, it may not be possible to modify the clients' existing protocols. To address this challenge, this work focuses on clients who always maximize their individual cumulative rewards, and introduces a novel idea of ``reward teaching'', where the server guides the clients towards global optimality through implicit local reward adjustments. Under this framework, the server faces two tightly coupled tasks of bandit learning and target teaching, whose combination is non-trivial and challenging. A phased approach, called Teaching-After-Learning (TAL), is first designed to encourage and discourage clients' explorations separately. General performance analyses of TAL are established when the clients' strategies satisfy certain mild requirements. With novel technical approaches developed to analyze the warm-start behaviors of bandit algorithms, particularized guarantees of TAL with clients running UCB or epsilon-greedy strategies are then obtained. These results demonstrate that TAL achieves logarithmic regrets while only incurring logarithmic adjustment costs, which is order-optimal w.r.t. a natural lower bound. As a further extension, the Teaching-While-Learning (TWL) algorithm is developed with the idea of successive arm elimination to break the non-adaptive phase separation in TAL. Rigorous analyses demonstrate that when facing clients with UCB1, TWL outperforms TAL in terms of the dependencies on sub-optimality gaps thanks to its adaptive design. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and generality of the proposed algorithms.

Power system optimal dispatch with transient security constraints is commonly represented as Transient Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow (TSC-OPF). Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)-based TSC-OPF trains efficient decision-making agents that are adaptable to various scenarios and provide solution results quickly. However, due to the high dimensionality of the state space and action spaces, as well as the non-smoothness of dynamic constraints, existing DRL-based TSC-OPF solution methods face a significant challenge of the sparse reward problem. To address this issue, a fast-converged DRL method for TSC-OPF is proposed in this paper. The Markov Decision Process (MDP) modeling of TSC-OPF is improved by reducing the observation space and smoothing the reward design, thus facilitating agent training. An improved Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm with Curriculum learning, Parallel exploration, and Ensemble decision-making (DDPG-CPEn) is introduced to drastically enhance the efficiency of agent training and the accuracy of decision-making. The effectiveness, efficiency, and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated through experiments in the IEEE 39-bus system and a practical 710-bus regional power grid. The source code of the proposed method is made public on GitHub.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technology for wireless communication composed of a large number of low-cost passive devices with reconfigurable parameters, which can reflect signals with a certain phase shift and is capable of building programmable communication environment. In this paper, to avoid the high hardware cost and energy consumption in spatial modulation (SM), an IRS-aided hybrid secure SM (SSM) system with a hybrid precoder is proposed. To improve the security performance, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing the beamforming at IRS and hybrid precoding at the transmitter. Considering that the SR has no closed form expression, an approximate SR (ASR) expression is derived as the objective function. To improve the SR performance, three IRS beamforming methods, called IRS alternating direction method of multipliers (IRS-ADMM), IRS block coordinate ascend (IRS-BCA) and IRS semi-definite relaxation (IRS-SDR), are proposed. As for the hybrid precoding design, approximated secrecy rate-successive convex approximation (ASR-SCA) method and cut-off rate-gradient ascend (COR-GA) method are proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IRS-SDR and IRS-ADMM beamformers harvest substantial SR performance gains over IRS-BCA. Particularly, the proposed IRS-ADMM and IRS-BCA are of low-complexity at the expense of a little performance loss compared with IRS-SDR. For hybrid precoding, the proposed ASR-SCA performs better than COR-GA in the high transmit power region.

The oscillation phenomena associated with the control of voltage source converters (VSCs) are widely concerning, and locating the source of these oscillations is crucial to suppressing them; therefore, this paper presents a locating scheme, based on the energy structure and nonlinearity detection. On the one hand, the energy structure, which conforms with the principle of the energy-based method and dissipativity theory, is constructed to describe the transient energy flow for VSCs, and on this basis, a defined characteristic quantity is implemented to narrow the scope of oscillation source location; on the other hand, according to the self-sustained oscillation characteristics of VSCs, an index for nonlinearity detection is applied to locate the VSCs which produce the oscillation energy. The combination of the energy structure and nonlinearity detection could distinguish the contributions of different VSCs to the oscillation. The results of a case study implemented by the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation validate the proposed scheme.

Federated learning (FL) is a popular distributed machine learning (ML) paradigm, but is often limited by significant communication costs and edge device computation capabilities. Federated Split Learning (FSL) preserves the parallel model training principle of FL, with a reduced device computation requirement thanks to splitting the ML model between the server and clients. However, FSL still incurs very high communication overhead due to transmitting the smashed data and gradients between the clients and the server in each global round. Furthermore, the server has to maintain separate models for every client, resulting in a significant computation and storage requirement that grows linearly with the number of clients. This paper tries to solve these two issues by proposing a communication and storage efficient federated and split learning (CSE-FSL) strategy, which utilizes an auxiliary network to locally update the client models while kee** only a single model at the server, hence avoiding the communication of gradients from the server and greatly reducing the server resource requirement. Communication cost is further reduced by only sending the smashed data in selected epochs from the clients. We provide a rigorous theoretical analysis of CSE-FSL that guarantees its convergence for non-convex loss functions. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that CSE-FSL has a significant communication reduction over existing FSL techniques while achieving state-of-the-art convergence and model accuracy, using several real-world FL tasks.

Conventional inertia control strategies (i.e., the VSG-based and PD-based strategies) for the fast frequency regulation resources (FFRs) might lead to system oscillations due to their emulations of generator dynamics. The only-droop-based inertia control strategy is a feasible idea to address this issue. This letter quantitatively investigates the equivalent inertia provided by the droop control of the FFRs. First, an equivalent-scenario-based method is proposed to evaluate the equivalent inertia provided by the droop control, which shows that the droop control with a constant droop coefficient provides time-variant equivalent inertia. Then, the time-variant-droop-based equivalent inertia control (VDIC) strategy is proposed for the FFRs, which can provide the required constant inertia support without introducing generator-like dynamics. A case study verifies the effectiveness of the VDIC strategy.

Recently, webly supervised learning (WSL) has been studied to leverage numerous and accessible data from the Internet. Most existing methods focus on learning noise-robust models from web images while neglecting the performance drop caused by the differences between web domain and real-world domain. However, only by tackling the performance gap above can we fully exploit the practical value of web datasets. To this end, we propose a Few-shot guided Prototypical (FoPro) representation learning method, which only needs a few labeled examples from reality and can significantly improve the performance in the real-world domain. Specifically, we initialize each class center with few-shot real-world data as the ``realistic" prototype. Then, the intra-class distance between web instances and ``realistic" prototypes is narrowed by contrastive learning. Finally, we measure image-prototype distance with a learnable metric. Prototypes are polished by adjacent high-quality web images and involved in removing distant out-of-distribution samples. In experiments, FoPro is trained on web datasets with a few real-world examples guided and evaluated on real-world datasets. Our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on three fine-grained datasets and two large-scale datasets. Compared with existing WSL methods under the same few-shot settings, FoPro still excels in real-world generalization. Code is available at https://github.com/yuleiqin/fopro.

The dynamic security assessment of power systems needs to scan contingencies in a preselected set through time-domain simulations. With more and more inverter-based-generation, such as wind and solar power generation, integrated into power systems, electro-magnetic transient simulation is adopted. However, the complexity of simulation will increase greatly if inverter-based-generation units are modeled in detail. In order to reduce the complexity of simulation of power systems including large-scale wind farms, it is critical to develop dynamic equivalent methods for wind farms which are applicable to the expected contingency analysis. The dynamic response characteristics of permanent magnet synchronous generator-wind turbine generators (PMSG-WTGs) are not only influenced by their control strategies, but also by the operating wind speeds and the fault severities. Thus, this paper proposes a dynamic equivalent method for PMSG-WTG based wind farms considering the wind speeds and the fault severities. Firstly, this paper analyzes all possible response characteristics of a PMSG-WTG and proposes a clustering method based on the operating wind speed and the terminal voltage of each PMSG-WTG at the end of the fault. Then, a single-machine equivalent method is introduced for each group of PMSG-WTGs. For the group of PMSG-WTGs with active power ramp recovery process, an equivalent model with segmented ramp rate limitation for active current is designed. In order to obtain the clustering indicators, a simulation-based iterative method is put forward to calculate the voltage at point of common connection (PCC) of the wind farm, and a PMSG-WTG terminal voltage calculation method is further presented. Eventually, the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified by the simulation results.

Specifically, we consider an essential bandpass filter at receiver RF front-end, which has been ignored in existing works. With the continuous development of large-scale complex hybrid AC-DC grids, the fast adjustability of HVDC systems is required by the grid to provide frequency regulation services. This paper develops a fully data-driven linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for the HVDC to provide temporal frequency support. The main technical challenge is the complexity and the nonlinearity of multi-infeed hybrid AC-DC (MIDC) systems dynamics that make the LQR intractable. Based on Koopman operator (KO) theory, a Koopman eigenpairs construction method is developed to fit a global linear dynamic model of MIDC systems. Once globally linear representation of uncontrolled system dynamics is obtained offline, the control term is constituted by the gradient of the identified eigenfunctions and the control matrix $\mathbf{B}$. In case that $\mathbf{B}$ is unknown, we propose a method to identify it based on the verified Koopman eigenfunctions. The active power reference is optimized online for LCC-HVDC in a moving horizon fashion to provide frequency support, with only local frequency and transmission power measurements. The robustness of the proposed control method against approximation errors of the linear representation in eigenfunction coordinates is analyzed. Simulation results show the effectiveness, robustness and adaptability of the proposed emergency control strategy.

We propose a novel communication design, termed random orthogonalization, for federated learning (FL) in a massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system. The key novelty of random orthogonalization comes from the tight coupling of FL and two unique characteristics of massive MIMO -- channel hardening and favorable propagation. As a result, random orthogonalization can achieve natural over-the-air model aggregation without requiring transmitter side channel state information (CSI) for the uplink phase of FL, while significantly reducing the channel estimation overhead at the receiver. We extend this principle to the downlink communication phase and develop a simple but highly effective model broadcast method for FL. We also relax the massive MIMO assumption by proposing an enhanced random orthogonalization design for both uplink and downlink FL communications, that does not rely on channel hardening or favorable propagation. Theoretical analyses with respect to both communication and machine learning performance are carried out. In particular, an explicit relationship among the convergence rate, the number of clients, and the number of antennas is established. Experimental results validate the effectiveness and efficiency of random orthogonalization for FL in massive MIMO.

In recent years, the sub-synchronous oscillation (SSO) accidents caused by wind power have received extensive attention. A method is needed to distinguish if nonlinear behavior exists in the recorded equal-amplitude accident waveforms, so that different methods can be adopted to analyze the mechanism of the oscillation. The theory of higher-order statistics (HOS) has become a powerful tool for detection of nonlinear behavior (DNB) in production quality control since 1960s. However, HOS analysis has been applied in mechanical condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, even after being introduced into the power system and wind farms. This paper focuses on the voltage source converter (VSC) control systems in wind farms and tries to detect the nonlinear behavior caused by the bilateral or unilateral saturation hard limits based on HOS analysis. First, the traditional describing function is extended to obtain more frequency domain information, and hereby the harmonic characteristics of bilateral and the unilateral saturation hard limit are studied. Then the bispectrum and trispectrum are introduced as HOS, which are extended into bicoherence and tricoherence spectrums to eliminate the effects from linear parts in the VSC control system. The effectiveness of DNB and classification based on HOS is strictly proved and its detailed calculation and estimation process is illustrated. Finally, the proposed method is demonstrated and further discussed through simulation results.

Due to possible emergency faults and frequency regulation reserve shortage in the multi-infeed hybrid AC-DC (MIDC) system, the emergency frequency control (EFC) with LCC-HVDC systems participating is important for system frequency stability. Nevertheless, the existing decentralized EFC strategies cannot guarantee the transient stability constraints of lines and cannot meet the frequency restoration requirement. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a complementary distributed EFC strategy. By selecting the semi-distributed or fully-distributed control law according to the state of AC system control center, the proposed distributed EFC can improve the control performance with a normal control center and enhance the control reliability in case of control center failure. Then, to derive the semi-distributed and fully-distributed control laws, a general design method is proposed by formulating an optimal EFC problem. Both of these two control laws can guarantee transient stability constraints, restore system frequency and achieve the defined optimal control objective. Moreover, the optimality of the closed-loop equilibrium is proven, and a Lyapunov analysis shows the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system with the discontinuous control dynamics. A case study verifies the effectiveness of the proposed distributed EFC strategy.

We propose covert beamforming design frameworks for integrated radar sensing and communication (IRSC) systems, where the radar can covertly communicate with legitimate users under the cover of the probing waveforms without being detected by the eavesdropper. Specifically, by jointly designing the target detection beamformer and communication beamformer, we aim to maximize the radar detection mutual information (MI) (or the communication rate) subject to the covert constraint, the communication rate constraint (or the radar detection MI constraint), and the total power constraint. For the perfect eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) scenario, we transform the covert beamforming design problems into a series of convex subproblems, by exploiting semidefinite relaxation, which can be solved via the bisection search method. Considering the high complexity of iterative optimization, we further propose a single-iterative covert beamformer design scheme based on the zero-forcing criterion. For the imperfect eavesdropper's CSI scenario, we develop a relaxation and restriction method to tackle the robust covert beamforming design problems. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed covert beamforming schemes for perfect and imperfect CSI scenarios.

Finding small lesions is very challenging due to lack of noticeable features, severe class imbalance, as well as the size itself. One approach to improve small lesion segmentation is to reduce the region of interest and inspect it at a higher sensitivity rather than performing it for the entire region. It is usually implemented as sequential or joint segmentation of organ and lesion, which requires additional supervision on organ segmentation. Instead, we propose to utilize an intensity distribution of a target lesion at no additional labeling cost to effectively separate regions where the lesions are possibly located from the background. It is incorporated into network training as an auxiliary task. We applied the proposed method to segmentation of small bowel carcinoid tumors in CT scans. We observed improvements for all metrics (33.5% $\rightarrow$ 38.2%, 41.3% $\rightarrow$ 47.8%, 30.0% $\rightarrow$ 35.9% for the global, per case, and per tumor Dice scores, respectively.) compared to the baseline method, which proves the validity of our idea. Our method can be one option for explicitly incorporating intensity distribution information of a target in network training.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and device-to-device (D2D) communication are two promising technologies for improving transmission reliability between transceivers in communication systems. In this paper, we consider the design of reliable communication between the access point (AP) and actuators for a downlink multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) system in the industrial IoT (IIoT) scenario. We propose a two-stage protocol combining IRS with D2D communication so that all actuators can successfully receive the message from AP within a given delay. The superiority of the protocol is that the communication reliability between AP and actuators is doubly augmented by the IRS-aided first-stage transmission and the second-stage D2D transmission. A joint optimization problem of active and passive beamforming is formulated, which aims to maximize the number of actuators with successful decoding. We study the joint beamforming problem for cases where the channel state information (CSI) is perfect and imperfect. For each case, we develop efficient algorithms that include convergence and complexity analysis. Simulation results demonstrate the necessity and role of IRS with a well-optimized reflection matrix, and the D2D network in promoting reliable communication. Moreover, the proposed protocol can enable reliable communication even in the presence of stringent latency requirements and CSI estimation errors.

In multi-infeed hybrid AC-DC (MIDC) systems, the emergency frequency control (EFC) with LCC-HVDC systems participating is of vital importance for system frequency stability. Nevertheless, when regional power systems are operated by different decision-makers, the LCC-HVDC systems and their connected AC systems might be unwilling to participate in the EFC due to the costs and losses. In this paper, to incentivize the LCC-HVDC systems and their connected adjacent AC systems to participate in the droop-based EFC, a novel control-parameter-based incentive mechanism is proposed, which can deal with various possible emergency frequency faults. Then, a non-cooperative-based incentive game model is formulated to implement the incentive mechanism in the MIDC system. An algorithm for seeking the Nash equilibrium is designed, and the uniqueness of Nash equilibrium is proven. Moreover, the individual rationality, incentive compatibility and social optimality of the proposed mechanism are analyzed and proven. The effectiveness of the proposed incentive mechanism is verified through a case study.

We analyze the performance of the Borda counting algorithm in a non-parametric model. The algorithm needs to utilize probabilistic rankings of the items within $m$-sized subsets to accurately determine which items are the overall top-$k$ items in a total of $n$ items. The Borda counting algorithm simply counts the cumulative scores for each item from these partial ranking observations. This generalizes a previous work of a similar nature by Shah et al. using probabilistic pairwise comparison data. The performance of the Borda counting algorithm critically depends on the associated score separation $Δ_k$ between the $k$-th item and the $(k+1)$-th item. Specifically, we show that if $Δ_k$ is greater than certain value, then the top-$k$ items selected by the algorithm is asymptotically accurate almost surely; if $Δ_k$ is below certain value, then the result will be inaccurate with a constant probability. In the special case of $m=2$, i.e., pairwise comparison, the resultant bound is tighter than that given by Shah et al., leading to a reduced gap between the error probability upper and lower bounds. These results are further extended to the approximate top-$k$ selection setting. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the Borda counting algorithm, compared with the spectral MLE-based algorithm, particularly when the data does not necessarily follow an assumed parametric model.

Purpose: Identification of abdominal Lymph Nodes (LN) that are suspicious for metastasis in T2 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans is critical for staging of lymphoproliferative diseases. Prior work on LN detection has been limited to specific anatomical regions of the body (pelvis, rectum) in single MR slices. Therefore, the development of a universal approach to detect LN in full T2 MRI volumes is highly desirable.
Methods: In this study, a Computer Aided Detection (CAD) pipeline to universally identify abdominal LN in volumetric T2 MRI using neural networks is proposed. First, we trained various neural network models for detecting LN: Faster RCNN with and without Hard Negative Example Mining (HNEM), FCOS, FoveaBox, VFNet, and Detection Transformer (DETR). Next, we show that the state-of-the-art (SOTA) VFNet model with Adaptive Training Sample Selection (ATSS) outperforms Faster RCNN with HNEM. Finally, we ensembled models that surpassed a 45% mAP threshold. We found that the VFNet model and one-stage model ensemble can be interchangeably used in the CAD pipeline.
Results: Experiments on 122 test T2 MRI volumes revealed that VFNet achieved a 51.1% mAP and 78.7% recall at 4 false positives (FP) per volume, while the one-stage model ensemble achieved a mAP of 52.3% and sensitivity of 78.7% at 4FP.
Conclusion: Our contribution is a CAD pipeline that detects LN in T2 MRI volumes, resulting in a sensitivity improvement of $\sim$14 points over the current SOTA method for LN detection (sensitivity of 78.7% at 4 FP vs. 64.6% at 5 FP per volume).

People are not always receptive to their voice data being collected and misused. Training the audio intelligence systems needs these data to build useful features, but the cost for getting permissions or purchasing data is very high, which inevitably encourages hackers to collect these voice data without people's awareness. To discourage the hackers from proactively collecting people's voice data, we are the first to propose a clean-label poisoning attack, called WaveFuzz, which can prevent intelligence audio models from building useful features from protected (poisoned) voice data but still preserve the semantic information to the humans. Specifically, WaveFuzz perturbs the voice data to cause Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) (typical representations of audio signals) to generate the poisoned frequency features. These poisoned features are then fed to audio prediction models, which degrades the performance of audio intelligence systems. Empirically, we show the efficacy of WaveFuzz by attacking two representative types of intelligent audio systems, i.e., speaker recognition system (SR) and speech command recognition system (SCR). For example, the accuracies of models are declined by $19.78\%$ when only $10\%$ of the poisoned voice data is to fine-tune models, and the accuracies of models declined by $6.07\%$ when only $10\%$ of the training voice data is poisoned. Consequently, WaveFuzz is an effective technique that enables people to fight back to protect their own voice data, which sheds new light on ameliorating privacy issues.

Symbol-level precoding (SLP) based on the concept of constructive interference (CI) is shown to be superior to traditional block-level precoding (BLP), however at the cost of a symbol-by-symbol optimization during the precoding design. In this paper, we propose a CI-based block-level precoding (CI-BLP) scheme for the downlink transmission of a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication system, where we design a constant precoding matrix to a block of symbol slots to exploit CI for each symbol slot simultaneously. A single optimization problem is formulated to maximize the minimum CI effect over the entire block, thus reducing the computational cost of traditional SLP as the optimization problem only needs to be solved once per block. By leveraging the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions and the dual problem formulation, the original optimization problem is finally shown to be equivalent to a quadratic programming (QP) over a simplex. Numerical results validate our derivations and exhibit superior performance for the proposed CI-BLP scheme over traditional BLP and SLP methods, thanks to the relaxed block-level power constraint.

This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) energy-optimal path-following control design for autonomous underwater vehicles subject to ocean currents. The proposed approach has a two-stage control architecture consisting of the setpoint computation and the setpoint tracking. In the first stage, the surge velocity, heave velocity, and pitch angle setpoints are optimized by minimizing the required vehicle propulsion energy under currents, and the line-of-sight (LOS) guidance law is used to generate the yaw angle setpoint that ensures path following. In the second stage, two model predictive controllers are designed to control the vehicle motion in the horizontal and vertical planes by tracking the optimal setpoints. The proposed controller is compared with a conventional LOS-based control that maintains zero heave velocity relative to the current (i.e., relative heave velocity) and derives pitch angle setpoint using LOS guidance to reach the desired depth. Through simulations, we show that the proposed approach can achieve more than 13% energy saving on a lawnmower-type and an inspection mission under different ocean current conditions. The simulation results demonstrate that allowing motions with non-zero relative heave velocity improves energy efficiency in 3D path-following applications.

Probabilistic load flow (PLF) calculation, as a fundamental tool to analyze transmission system behavior, has been studied for decades. Despite a variety of available methods, existing PLF approaches rarely take system control into account. However, system control, as an automatic buffer between the fluctuations in random variables and the variations in system states, has a significant impact on the final PLF result. To consider control actions' influence, this paper proposes the first analytical PLF method for the transmission grid that takes into account primary and secondary frequency controls. This method is based on a high-precision linear power flow model, whose precision is even further improved in this paper by an original correction approach. This paper also proves that if the joint probability distribution (JPD) of random variables is expressed by a Gaussian mixture model (GMM), then the JPD of system states (e.g., nodal voltages) is an infinite GMM. By leveraging this proposition, the proposed method can generate the joint PLF of the whole system, is applicable to random variables obeying any distributions, and is capable of capturing their correlation. The high accuracy and satisfactory efficiency of this method are verified on test cases scaling from 14 to 1354 buses.

Given the increased percentage of wind power in power systems, chance-constrained optimal power flow (CC-OPF) calculation, as a means to take wind power uncertainty into account with a guaranteed security level, is being promoted. Compared to the local CC-OPF within a regional grid, the global CC-OPF of a multi-regional interconnected grid is able to coordinate across different regions and therefore improve the economic efficiency when integrating high percentage of wind power generation. In this global problem, however, multiple regional independent system operators (ISOs) participate in the decision-making process, raising the need for distributed but coordinated approaches. Most notably, due to regulation restrictions, commercial interest, and data security, regional ISOs may refuse to share confidential information with others, including generation cost, load data, system topologies, and line parameters. But this information is needed to build and solve the global CC-OPF spanning multiple areas. To tackle these issues, this paper proposes a distributed CC-OPF method with confidentiality preservation, which enables regional ISOs to determine the optimal dispatchable generations within their regions without disclosing confidential data. This method does not require parameter tunings and will not suffer from convergence challenges. Results from IEEE test cases show that this method is highly accurate.

In this paper, we propose a constructive interference (CI)-based block-level precoding (CI-BLP) approach for the downlink of a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication system. Contrary to existing CI precoding approaches which have to be designed on a symbol-by-symbol level, here a constant precoding matrix is applied to a block of symbol slots within a channel coherence interval, thus significantly reducing the computational costs over traditional CI-based symbol-level precoding (CI-SLP) as the CI-BLP optimization problem only needs to be solved once per block. For both PSK and QAM modulation, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the minimum CI effect over the block subject to a block- rather than symbol-level power budget. We mathematically derive the optimal precoding matrix for CI-BLP as a function of the Lagrange multipliers in closed form. By formulating the dual problem, the original CI-BLP optimization problem is further shown to be equivalent to a quadratic programming (QP) optimization. Numerical results validate our derivations, and show that the proposed CI-BLP scheme achieves improved performance over the traditional CI-SLP method, thanks to the relaxed power constraint over the considered block of symbol slots.

Catering to the proliferation of Internet of Things devices and distributed machine learning at the edge, we propose an energy harvesting federated learning (EHFL) framework in this paper. The introduction of EH implies that a client's availability to participate in any FL round cannot be guaranteed, which complicates the theoretical analysis. We derive novel convergence bounds that capture the impact of time-varying device availabilities due to the random EH characteristics of the participating clients, for both parallel and local stochastic gradient descent (SGD) with non-convex loss functions. The results suggest that having a uniform client scheduling that maximizes the minimum number of clients throughout the FL process is desirable, which is further corroborated by the numerical experiments using a real-world FL task and a state-of-the-art EH scheduler.

This paper describes our submission to ICASSP 2022 Multi-channel Multi-party Meeting Transcription (M2MeT) Challenge. For Track 1, we propose several approaches to empower the clustering-based speaker diarization system to handle overlapped speech. Front-end dereverberation and the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation are used to improve the accuracy of speaker diarization. Multi-channel combination and overlap detection are applied to reduce the missed speaker error. A modified DOVER-Lap is also proposed to fuse the results of different systems. We achieve the final DER of 5.79% on the Eval set and 7.23% on the Test set. For Track 2, we develop our system using the Conformer model in a joint CTC-attention architecture. Serialized output training is adopted to multi-speaker overlapped speech recognition. We propose a neural front-end module to model multi-channel audio and train the model end-to-end. Various data augmentation methods are utilized to mitigate over-fitting in the multi-channel multi-speaker E2E system. Transformer language model fusion is developed to achieve better performance. The final CER is 19.2% on the Eval set and 20.8% on the Test set.
