The multi-sector intelligent surface (IS), benefiting from a smarter wave manipulation capability, has been shown to enhance channel gain and offer full-space coverage in communications. However, the benefits of multi-sector IS in wireless sensing remain unexplored. This paper introduces the application of multi-sector IS for wireless sensing/localization. Specifically, we propose a new self-sensing system, where an active source controller uses the multi-sector IS geometry to reflect/scatter the emitted signals towards the entire space, thereby achieving full-space coverage for wireless sensing. Additionally, dedicated sensors are installed aligned with the IS elements at each sector, which collect echo signals from the target and cooperate to sense the target angle. In this context, we develop a maximum likelihood estimator of the target angle for the proposed multi-sector IS self-sensing system, along with the corresponding theoretical limits defined by the Cramér-Rao Bound. The analysis reveals that the advantages of the multi-sector IS self-sensing system stem from two aspects: enhancing the probing power on targets (thereby improving power efficiency) and increasing the rate of target angle (thereby enhancing the transceiver's sensitivity to target angles). Finally, our analysis and simulations confirm that the multi-sector IS self-sensing system, particularly the 4-sector architecture, achieves full-space sensing capability beyond the single-sector IS configuration. Furthermore, similarly to communications, employing directive antenna patterns on each sector's IS elements and sensors significantly enhances sensing capabilities. This enhancement originates from both aspects of improved power efficiency and target angle sensitivity, with the former also being observed in communications while the latter being unique in sensing.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is envisioned as a key pillar for enabling the upcoming sixth generation (6G) communication systems, requiring not only reliable communication functionalities but also highly accurate environmental sensing capabilities. In this paper, we design a novel networked ISAC framework to explore the collaboration among multiple users for environmental sensing. Specifically, multiple users can serve as powerful sensors, capturing back scattered signals from a target at various angles to facilitate reliable computational imaging. Centralized sensing approaches are extremely sensitive to the capability of the leader node because it requires the leader node to process the signals sent by all the users. To this end, we propose a two-step distributed cooperative sensing algorithm that allows low-dimensional intermediate estimate exchange among neighboring users, thus eliminating the reliance on the centralized leader node and improving the robustness of sensing. This way, multiple users can cooperatively sense a target by exploiting the block-wise environment sparsity and the interference cancellation technique. Furthermore, we analyze the mean square error of the proposed distributed algorithm as a networked sensing performance metric and propose a beamforming design for the proposed network ISAC scheme to maximize the networked sensing accuracy and communication performance subject to a transmit power constraint. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms.

Six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA) is an effective solution for enhancing wireless network capacity through the adjustment of both 3D positions and 3D rotations of distributed antennas/antenna surfaces. Although freely positioning/rotating 6DMA surfaces offers the greatest flexibility and thus highest capacity improvement, its implementation may be challenging in practice due to the drastic architecture change required for existing base stations (BSs), which predominantly adopt fixed-position antenna (FPA) arrays (e.g., sector antenna arrays). Thus, we introduce in this letter a new BS architecture called hybrid fixed and movable antennas (HFMA), which consists of both conventional FPA arrays and position/rotation-adjustable 6DMA surfaces. For ease of implementation, we consider that all 6DMA surfaces can rotate along a circular track above the FPA arrays. We aim to maximize the network capacity via optimizing the rotation angles of all 6DMA surfaces based on the users' spatial distribution. Since this problem is combinatorial and its optimal solution requires prohibitively high computational complexity via exhaustive search, we propose an alternative adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo based method to solve it more efficiently. Finally, we present simulation results that show significant performance gains achieved by our proposed design over various benchmark schemes.

Electronic countermeasure (ECM) technology plays a critical role in modern electronic warfare, which can interfere with enemy radar detection systems by noise or deceptive signals. However, the conventional active jamming strategy incurs additional hardware and power costs and has the potential threat of exposing the target itself. To tackle the above challenges, we propose a new intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided radar spoofing strategy in this letter, where IRS is deployed on the surface of a target to help eliminate the signals reflected towards the hostile radar to shield the target, while simultaneously redirecting its reflected signal towards a surrounding clutter to generate deceptive angle-of-arrival (AoA) sensing information for the radar. We optimize the IRS's reflection to maximize the received signal power at the radar from the direction of the selected clutter subject to the constraint that its received power from the direction of the target is lower than a given detection threshold. We first solve this non-convex optimization problem using the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) method and further propose a lower-complexity solution for real-time implementation. Simulation results validate the efficacy of our proposed IRS-aided spoofing system as compared to various benchmark schemes.

Six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA) is an effective approach to improve wireless network capacity by adjusting the 3D positions and 3D rotations of distributed antenna surfaces based on the users' spatial distribution and statistical channel information. Although continuously positioning/rotating 6DMA surfaces can achieve the greatest flexibility and thus the highest capacity improvement, it is difficult to implement due to the discrete movement constraints of practical stepper motors. Thus, in this paper, we consider a 6DMA-aided base station (BS) with only a finite number of possible discrete positions and rotations for the 6DMA surfaces. We aim to maximize the average network capacity for random numbers of users at random locations by jointly optimizing the 3D positions and 3D rotations of multiple 6DMA surfaces at the BS subject to discrete movement constraints. In particular, we consider the practical cases with and without statistical channel knowledge of the users, and propose corresponding offline and online optimization algorithms, by leveraging the Monte Carlo and conditional sample mean (CSM) methods, respectively. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed offline and online algorithms for discrete position/rotation optimization of 6DMA surfaces as compared to various benchmark schemes with fixed-position antennas (FPAs) and 6DMAs with limited movability. It is shown that 6DMA-BS can significantly enhance wireless network capacity, even under discrete position/rotation constraints, by exploiting the spatial distribution characteristics of the users.

Segment anything models (SAMs) are gaining attention for their zero-shot generalization capability in segmenting objects of unseen classes and in unseen domains when properly prompted. Interactivity is a key strength of SAMs, allowing users to iteratively provide prompts that specify objects of interest to refine outputs. However, to realize the interactive use of SAMs for 3D medical imaging tasks, rapid inference times are necessary. High memory requirements and long processing delays remain constraints that hinder the adoption of SAMs for this purpose. Specifically, while 2D SAMs applied to 3D volumes contend with repetitive computation to process all slices independently, 3D SAMs suffer from an exponential increase in model parameters and FLOPS. To address these challenges, we present FastSAM3D which accelerates SAM inference to 8 milliseconds per 128*128*128 3D volumetric image on an NVIDIA A100 GPU. This speedup is accomplished through 1) a novel layer-wise progressive distillation scheme that enables knowledge transfer from a complex 12-layer ViT-B to a lightweight 6-layer ViT-Tiny variant encoder without training from scratch; and 2) a novel 3D sparse flash attention to replace vanilla attention operators, substantially reducing memory needs and improving parallelization. Experiments on three diverse datasets reveal that FastSAM3D achieves a remarkable speedup of 527.38x compared to 2D SAMs and 8.75x compared to 3D SAMs on the same volumes without significant performance decline. Thus, FastSAM3D opens the door for low-cost truly interactive SAM-based 3D medical imaging segmentation with commonly used GPU hardware. Code is available at https://github.com/arcadelab/FastSAM3D.

In this paper, we propose a new six-dimensional (6D) movable antenna (6DMA) system for future wireless networks to improve the communication performance. Unlike the traditional fixed-position antenna (FPA) and existing fluid antenna/two-dimensional (2D) movable antenna (FA/2DMA) systems that adjust the positions of antennas only, the proposed 6DMA system consists of distributed antenna surfaces with independently adjustable three-dimensional (3D) positions as well as 3D rotations within a given space. In particular, this paper applies the 6DMA to the base station (BS) in wireless networks to provide full degrees of freedom (DoFs) for the BS to adapt to the dynamic user spatial distribution in the network. However, a challenging new problem arises on how to optimally control the 6D positions and rotations of all 6DMA surfaces at the BS to maximize the network capacity based on the user spatial distribution, subject to the practical constraints on 6D antennas' movement. To tackle this problem, we first model the 6DMA-enabled BS and the user channels with the BS in terms of 6D positions and rotations of all 6DMA surfaces. Next, we propose an efficient alternating optimization algorithm to search for the best 6D positions and rotations of all 6DMA surfaces by leveraging the Monte Carlo simulation technique. Specifically, we sequentially optimize the 3D position/3D rotation of each 6DMA surface with those of the other surfaces fixed in an iterative manner. Numerical results show that our proposed 6DMA-BS can significantly improve the network capacity as compared to the benchmark BS architectures with FPAs or 6DMAs with limited/partial movability, especially when the user distribution is more spatially non-uniform.

Speech contains rich information on the emotions of humans, and Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) has been an important topic in the area of human-computer interaction. The robustness of SER models is crucial, particularly in privacy-sensitive and reliability-demanding domains like private healthcare. Recently, the vulnerability of deep neural networks in the audio domain to adversarial attacks has become a popular area of research. However, prior works on adversarial attacks in the audio domain primarily rely on iterative gradient-based techniques, which are time-consuming and prone to overfitting the specific threat model. Furthermore, the exploration of sparse perturbations, which have the potential for better stealthiness, remains limited in the audio domain. To address these challenges, we propose a generator-based attack method to generate sparse and transferable adversarial examples to deceive SER models in an end-to-end and efficient manner. We evaluate our method on two widely-used SER datasets, Database of Elicited Mood in Speech (DEMoS) and Interactive Emotional dyadic MOtion CAPture (IEMOCAP), and demonstrate its ability to generate successful sparse adversarial examples in an efficient manner. Moreover, our generated adversarial examples exhibit model-agnostic transferability, enabling effective adversarial attacks on advanced victim models.

However, existing works on ISAC usually need to modify the communication protocol to cater for the new sensing performance requirement, which may be difficult to implement in practice. In this paper, we study a new intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) ISAC system by exploiting the distinct beam scanning operation in mmWave communications to achieve efficient sensing at the same time. First, we propose a two-phase ISAC protocol aided by a semi-passive IRS, consisting of beam scanning and data transmission. Specifically, in the beam scanning phase, the IRS finds the optimal beam for reflecting signals from the base station to a communication user via its passive elements. Meanwhile, the IRS directly estimates the angle of a nearby target based on echo signals from the target using its equipped active sensing element. Then, in the data transmission phase, the sensing accuracy is further improved by leveraging the data signals via possible IRS beam splitting. Next, we derive the achievable rate of the communication user as well as the Cramér-Rao bound and the approximate mean square error of the target angle estimation Finally, extensive simulation results are provided to verify our analysis as well as the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

In this paper, an integrated path planning and tube-following control scheme is proposed for collision-free navigation of a wheeled mobile robot (WMR) in a compact convex workspace cluttered with sufficiently separated spherical obstacles. An analytical path planning algorithm is developed based on Bouligand's tangent cones and Nagumo's invariance theorem, which enables the WMR to navigate towards a designated goal location from almost all initial positions in the free space, without entering into augmented obstacle regions with safety margins. We further construct a virtual "safe tube" around the reference trajectory, ensuring that its radius does not exceed the size of the safety margin. Subsequently, a saturated adaptive controller is designed to achieve safe trajectory tracking in the presence of disturbances. It is shown that this tube-following controller guarantees that the WMR tracks the reference trajectory within the predefined tube, while achieving uniform ultimate boundedness of both the position tracking and parameter estimation errors. This indicates that the WMR will not collide with any obstacles along the way. Finally, we report simulation and experimental results to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Automatic prostate segmentation in TRUS images has always been a challenging problem, since prostates in TRUS images have ambiguous boundaries and inhomogeneous intensity distribution. Although many prostate segmentation methods have been proposed, they still need to be improved due to the lack of sensibility to edge information. Consequently, the objective of this study is to devise a highly effective prostate segmentation method that overcomes these limitations and achieves accurate segmentation of prostates in TRUS images. A 3D edge-aware attention generative adversarial network (3D EAGAN)-based prostate segmentation method is proposed in this paper, which consists of an edge-aware segmentation network (EASNet) that performs the prostate segmentation and a discriminator network that distinguishes predicted prostates from real prostates. The proposed EASNet is composed of an encoder-decoder-based U-Net backbone network, a detail compensation module, four 3D spatial and channel attention modules, an edge enhance module, and a global feature extractor. The detail compensation module is proposed to compensate for the loss of detailed information caused by the down-sampling process of the encoder. The features of the detail compensation module are selectively enhanced by the 3D spatial and channel attention module. Furthermore, an edge enhance module is proposed to guide shallow layers in the EASNet to focus on contour and edge information in prostates. Finally, features from shallow layers and hierarchical features from the decoder module are fused through the global feature extractor to predict the segmentation prostates.

To alleviate the shortage of spectral resources as well as to reduce the weight, volume, and power consumption of wireless systems, joint communication-radar (JCR) systems have become a focus of interest in both civil and military fields. JCR systems based on time-modulated arrays (TMAs) constitute an attractive solution as a benefit of their high degree of beam steering freedom, low cost, and high accuracy. However, their sideband radiation results in energy loss, which is an inherent drawback. Hence the energy-efficiency optimization of TMA-based JCR systems is of salient importance, but most of the existing TMA energy-efficiency optimization methods do not apply to JCR systems. In this paper, we consider a challenging secure wireless sensing scenario where a legitimate radar station (LRS) intends to detect a target at unknown location in the presence of an unauthorized radar station (URS). We aim to enhance the sensing performance of the LRS and in the meanwhile prevent the detection of the same target by the URS. Under this setup, conventional stealth-based approaches such as wrap** the target with electromagnetic wave absorbing materials are not applicable, since they will disable the target detection by not only the URS, but the LRS as well. To tackle this challenge, we propose in this paper a new target-mounted IRS approach, where intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is mounted on the outer/echo surface of the target and by tuning the IRS reflection, the strength of its reflected radar signal in any angle of departure (AoD) can be adjusted based on the signal's angle of arrival (AoA), thereby enhancing/suppressing the signal power towards the LRS/URS, respectively. To this end, we propose a practical protocol for the target-mounted IRS to estimate the LRS/URS channel and waveform parameters based on its sensed signals and control the IRS reflection for/against the LRS/URS accordingly. Specifically, we formulate new optimization problems to design the reflecting phase shifts at IRS for maximizing the received signal power at the LRS while kee** that at the URS below a certain level, for both the cases of short-term and long-term IRS operations with different dynamic reflection capabilities. To solve these non-convex problems, we apply the penalty dual decomposition method to obtain high-quality suboptimal solutions for them efficiently. Finally, simulation results are presented that verify the effectiveness of the proposed protocol and algorithms for the target-mounted IRS to achieve secure wireless sensing, as compared with various benchmark schemes.

This paper investigates an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided millimeter-wave integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. Specifically, based on the passive beam scanning in the downlink, the IRS finds the optimal beam for reflecting the signals from the base station to a communication user. Meanwhile, the IRS estimates the angle of a nearby target based on its echo signal received by the sensing elements mounted on the IRS (i.e., semi-passive IRS). We propose an ISAC protocol for achieving the above objective via simultaneous (beam) training and sensing (STAS). Then, we derive the achievable rate of the communication user and the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of the angle estimation for the sensing target in closed-form. The achievable rate and CRB exhibit different performance against the duration of beam scanning. Specifically, the average achievable rate initially rises and subsequently declines, while the CRB monotonically decreases. Consequently, the duration of beam scanning should be carefully selected to balance communication and sensing performance. Simulation results have verified our analytical findings and shown that, thanks to the efficient use of downlink beam scanning signal for simultaneous communication and target sensing, the STAS protocol outperforms the benchmark protocol with orthogonal beam training and sensing.

Cross-dataset emotion recognition as an extremely challenging task in the field of EEG-based affective computing is influenced by many factors, which makes the universal models yield unsatisfactory results. Facing the situation that lacks EEG information decoding research, we first analyzed the impact of different EEG information(individual, session, emotion and trial) for emotion recognition by sample space visualization, sample aggregation phenomena quantification, and energy pattern analysis on five public datasets. Based on these phenomena and patterns, we provided the processing methods and interpretable work of various EEG differences. Through the analysis of emotional feature distribution patterns, the Individual Emotional Feature Distribution Difference(IEFDD) was found, which was also considered as the main factor of the stability for emotion recognition. After analyzing the limitations of traditional modeling approach suffering from IEFDD, the Weight-based Channel-model Matrix Framework(WCMF) was proposed. To reasonably characterize emotional feature distribution patterns, four weight extraction methods were designed, and the optimal was the correction T-test(CT) weight extraction method. Finally, the performance of WCMF was validated on cross-dataset tasks in two kinds of experiments that simulated different practical scenarios, and the results showed that WCMF had more stable and better emotion recognition ability.

This paper investigates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided unsourced random access (URA) scheme for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks with massive sporadic traffic devices. First of all, this paper proposes a novel joint active device separation (the message recovery of active device) and channel estimation architecture for the RIS-aided URA. Specifically, the RIS passive reflection is optimized before the successful device separation. Then, by associating the data sequences to multiple rank-one tensors and exploiting the angular sparsity of the RIS-BS channel, the detection problem is cast as a high-order coupled tensor decomposition problem without the need of exploiting pilot sequences. However, the inherent coupling among multiple sparse device-RIS channels, together with the unknown number of active devices make the detection problem at hand deviate from the widely-used coupled tensor decomposition format. To overcome this challenge, this paper judiciously devises a probabilistic model that captures both the element-wise sparsity from the angular channel model and the low-rank property due to the sporadic nature of URA. Then, based on such a probabilistic model, a iterative detection algorithm is developed under the framework of sparse variational inference, where each update iteration is obtained in a closed-form and the number of active devices can be automatically estimated for effectively avoiding the overfitting of noise. Extensive simulation results confirm the excellence of the proposed URA algorithm, especially for the case of a large number of reflecting elements for accommodating a significantly large number of devices.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technology to reconfigure the radio propagation environment by dynamically controlling wireless signal's amplitude and/or phase via a large number of reflecting elements. In contrast to the vast literature on studying IRS's performance gains in wireless communications, we study in this paper a new application of IRS for sensing/localizing targets in wireless networks. Specifically, we propose a new self-sensing IRS architecture where the IRS controller is capable of transmitting probing signals that are not only directly reflected by the target (referred to as the direct echo link), but also consecutively reflected by the IRS and then the target (referred to as the IRS-reflected echo link). Moreover, dedicated sensors are installed at the IRS for receiving both the direct and IRS-reflected echo signals from the target, such that the IRS can sense the direction of its nearby target by applying a customized multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. However, since the angle estimation mean square error (MSE) by the MUSIC algorithm is intractable, we propose to optimize the IRS passive reflection for maximizing the average echo signals' total power at the IRS sensors and derive the resultant Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of the angle estimation MSE. Last, numerical results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed new IRS sensing architecture and algorithm, as compared to other benchmark sensing systems/algorithms.

Millimeter-wave (mmW)/Terahertz (THz) wideband communication employing a large-scale antenna array is a promising technique of the sixth-generation (6G) wireless network for realizing massive machine-type communications (mMTC). To reduce the access latency and the signaling overhead, we design a grant-free random access scheme based on joint active device detection and channel estimation (JADCE) for mmW/THz wideband massive access. In particular, by exploiting the simultaneously sparse and low-rank structure of mmW/THz channels with spreads in the delay-angular domain, we propose two multi-rank aware JADCE algorithms via applying the quotient geometry of product of complex rank-$L$ matrices with the number of clusters $L$. It is proved that the proposed algorithms require a smaller number of measurements than the currently known bounds on measurements of conventional simultaneously sparse and low-rank recovery algorithms. Statistical analysis also shows that the proposed algorithms can linearly converge to the ground truth with low computational complexity. Finally, extensive simulation results confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithms in terms of the accuracy of both activity detection and channel estimation.

This paper provides an exponential stability result for the adaptive anti-unwinding attitude tracking control problem of a rigid body with uncertain but constant inertia parameters, without requiring the satisfaction of persistent excitation (PE) condition. Specifically, a composite immersion and invariance (I&I) adaptive controller is derived by integrating a prediction-error-driven learning law into the dynamically scaled I&I adaptive control framework, wherein we modify the scaling factor so that the algorithm design does not involve any dynamic gains. To avoid the unwinding problem, a barrier function is introduced as the attitude error function, along with the tactful establishment of two crucial algebra properties for exponential stability analysis. The regressor filtering method is adopted in combination with the dynamic regressor extension and mixing (DREM) procedure to acquire the prediction error using only easily obtainable signals. In particular, aiding by a constructive liner time-varying filter, the scalar regressor of DREM is extended to generate a new exciting counterpart. In this way, the derived controller is shown to permit closed-loop exponential stability without PE, in the sense that both output-tracking and parameter estimation errors exponentially converge to zero. Further, the composite learning law is augmented with a power term to achieve synchronized finite/fixed-time parameter convergence. Numerical simulations are performed to verify the theoretical findings.

Automated audio captioning aims to use natural language to describe the content of audio data. This paper presents an audio captioning system with an encoder-decoder architecture, where the decoder predicts words based on audio features extracted by the encoder. To improve the proposed system, transfer learning from either an upstream audio-related task or a large in-domain dataset is introduced to mitigate the problem induced by data scarcity. Besides, evaluation metrics are incorporated into the optimization of the model with reinforcement learning, which helps address the problem of ``exposure bias'' induced by ``teacher forcing'' training strategy and the mismatch between the evaluation metrics and the loss function. The resulting system was ranked 3rd in DCASE 2021 Task 6. Ablation studies are carried out to investigate how much each element in the proposed system can contribute to final performance. The results show that the proposed techniques significantly improve the scores of the evaluation metrics, however, reinforcement learning may impact adversely on the quality of the generated captions.

Reconstruction of image by using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has been vigorously studied in the last decade. Until now, there have being developed several techniques for imaging of a single object through scattering medium by using neural networks, however how to reconstruct images of more than one object simultaneously seems hard to realize. In this paper, we demonstrate an approach by using generative adversarial network (GAN) to reconstruct images of two adjacent objects through scattering media. We construct an imaging system for imaging of two adjacent objects behind the scattering media. In general, as the light field of two adjacent object images pass through the scattering slab, a speckle pattern is obtained. The designed adversarial network, which is called as YGAN, is employed to reconstruct the images simultaneously. It is shown that based on the trained YGAN, we can reconstruct images of two adjacent objects from one speckle pattern with high fidelity. In addition, we study the influence of the object image types, and the distance between the two adjacent objects on the fidelity of the reconstructed images. Moreover even if another scattering medium is inserted between the two objects, we can also reconstruct the images of two objects from a speckle with high quality. The technique presented in this work can be used for applications in areas of medical image analysis, such as medical image classification, segmentation, and studies of multi-object scattering imaging etc.

On-invasive optical imaging techniques are essential diagnostic tools in many fields. Although various recent methods have been proposed to utilize and control light in multiple scattering media, non-invasive optical imaging through and inside scattering layers across a large field of view remains elusive due to the physical limits set by the optical memory effect, especially without wavefront sha** techniques. Here, we demonstrate an approach that enables non-invasive fluorescence imaging behind scattering layers with field-of-views extending well beyond the optical memory effect. The method consists in demixing the speckle patterns emitted by a fluorescent object under variable unknown random illumination, using matrix factorization and a novel fingerprint-based reconstruction. Experimental validation shows the efficiency and robustness of the method with various fluorescent samples, covering a field of view up to three times the optical memory effect range. Our non-invasive imaging technique is simple, neither requires a spatial light modulator nor a guide star, and can be generalized to a wide range of incoherent contrast mechanisms and illumination schemes.

Diffractive zone plate optics uses a thin micro-structure pattern to alter the propagation direction of the incoming light wave. It has found important applications in extreme-wavelength imaging where conventional refractive lenses do not exist. The resolution limit of zone plate optics is determined by the smallest width of the outermost zone. In order to improve the achievable resolution, significant efforts have been devoted to the fabrication of very small zone width with ultrahigh placement accuracy. Here, we report the use of a diffractometer setup for bypassing the resolution limit of zone plate optics. In our prototype, we mounted the sample on two rotation stages and used a low-resolution binary zone plate to relay the sample plane to the detector. We then performed both in-plane and out-of-plane sample rotations and captured the corresponding raw images. The captured images were processed using a Fourier ptychographic procedure for resolution improvement. The final achievable resolution of the reported setup is not determined by the smallest width structures of the employed binary zone plate; instead, it is determined by the maximum angle of the out-of-plane rotation. In our experiment, we demonstrated 8-fold resolution improvement using both a resolution target and a titanium dioxide sample. The reported approach may be able to bypass the fabrication challenge of diffractive elements and open up new avenues for microscopy with extreme wavelengths.

To decrease the length of pilot sequences and the computational complexity in wideband massive access, this paper proposes a novel joint activity detection and channel estimation (JADCE) algorithm. Specifically, after formulating JADCE as a problem of recovering a simultaneously sparse-group and low rank matrix according to the characteristics of mmW/THz channel, we prove that jointly imposing $l_1$ norm and low rank on such a matrix can achieve a robust recovery under sufficient conditions, and verify that the number of measurements derived for the mmW/THz wideband massive access system is significantly smaller than currently known measurements bound derived for the conventional simultaneously sparse and low-rank recovery. Furthermore, we propose a multi-rank aware method by exploiting the quotient geometry of product of complex rank-$L$ matrices with the number of scattering clusters $L$. Theoretical analysis and simulation results confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of computational complexity, detection error rate, and channel estimation accuracy.

Grant-free random access is a promising protocol to support massive access in beyond fifth-generation (B5G) cellular Internet-of-Things (IoT) with sporadic traffic. Specifically, in each coherence interval, the base station (BS) performs joint activity detection and channel estimation (JADCE) before data transmission. Due to the deployment of a large-scale antennas array and the existence of a huge number of IoT devices, JADCE usually has high computational complexity and needs long pilot sequences. To solve these challenges, this paper proposes a dimension reduction method, which projects the original device state matrix to a low-dimensional space by exploiting its sparse and low-rank structure. Then, we develop an optimized design framework with a coupled full column rank constraint for JADCE to reduce the size of the search space. However, the resulting problem is non-convex and highly intractable, for which the conventional convex relaxation approaches are inapplicable. To this end, we propose a logarithmic smoothing method for the non-smoothed objective function and transform the interested matrix to a positive semidefinite matrix, followed by giving a Riemannian trust-region algorithm to solve the problem in complex field. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient to a large-scale JADCE problem and requires shorter pilot sequences than the state-of-art algorithms which only exploit the sparsity of device state matrix.

Existing systems require precise mechanical control and the cost is prohibitive for most individual pathologists. Here we report a low-cost and high-throughput WSI system termed OpenWSI. The reported system is built using off-the-shelf components including a programmable LED array, a photographic lens, and a low-cost computer numerical control (CNC) router. Different from conventional WSI platforms, our system performs real-time single-frame autofocusing using color-multiplexed illumination. For axial positioning control, we perform coarse adjustment using the CNC router and precise adjustment using the ultrasonic motor ring in the photographic lens. By using a 20X objective lens, we show that the OpenWSI system has a resolution of ~0.7 microns. It can acquire whole slide images of a 225-mm^2 region in ~2 mins, with throughput comparable to existing high-end platforms. The reported system offers a turnkey solution to transform the high-end WSI platforms into one that can be made broadly available and utilizable without loss of capacity.

Light passing through scattering media will be strongly scattered and diffused into complex speckle pattern, which however contains almost all the spatial information and color information of the objects. Although various technologies have been proposed to realize color imaging through the scattering media, current technologies are still complex with long sequence of measurement for each imaging pixel or spectral point spread functions of optical system. Here we theoretically prove the spatial averaging of triple correlation technique can be used to retrieve the Fourier phase of object, and experimentally demonstrate it can be applied in color imaging through scattering media. Compared to other phase retrieval techniques, the phase retrieval with triple correlation technique can retain the orientation information of objects, and can composite color image without rotation operation. However, most of the existing methods are performed with narrowband illumination or require point light-sources adjacent to the hidden objects as the references, to make an invasive pre-calibration of the imaging system. Here, inspired by the shift-and-add algorithm, we propose that by randomly selecting and averaging different sub-regions of the speckle patterns, an image pattern resembling the autocorrelation (we call it R-autocorrelation) of the hidden object can be extracted. By performing numerical simulations and experiments, we demonstrate that comparing with true autocorrelation, the pattern of R-autocorrelation has a significantly lower background and higher contrast, which enables better reconstructions of hidden objects, especially in the case of broadband illumination, or even with white-light.
