Grid modernization has increased the reliance of power networks on cyber networks within distribution systems (DSs), heightening their vulnerability to disasters. Communication network failures significantly impede DS load recovery by diminishing observation and control. Prior research has largely ignored the need for integrated recovery of DS power and cyber networks' centralized control. Indeed, communication network restoration is critical for speedy load recovery through DS automation based microgrid formation. This paper exploits the data routing capabilities of software-defined networking (SDN) to enhance centralized control recovery in DS communication networks, incorporating it into a comprehensive DS restoration model. This model, tailored to the control requirements of load restoration, strategically allocates limited communication resources to re-establish connections between the operation center and terminal devices. Subsequently, DS automation is employed to orchestrate DS microgrid formation for power resupply. Additionally, we introduce a cyclic algorithm designed to optimize the load recovery via a multi-step, cooperative process. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated on IEEE 33-node and IEEE 123-node test feeders.

The variability caused by the proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the significant growth in unbalanced three-phase loads pose unprecedented challenges to distribution network operations. This paper focuses on how a distribution system operator (DSO), taking over the distribution grid and market operations, would develop a risk-aware flexibility market to mitigate uncertainties in an unbalanced three-phase power distribution network. First, a distributionally robust chance constraint (DRCC) method is devised to solve the unbalanced three-phase optimal power flow using a semidefinite programming (SDP) model. The DSO can apply the proposed solution to jointly clear energy and flexibility markets. Then, the DRCC model accuracy is improved by an information-sharing mechanism characterized by spatially-correlated uncertainties in the distribution grid. Further, a novel system-wide response function is derived to make the DRCC model tractable. Using the duality theory, the paper further investigates the physical composition of the DSO's cleared flexibility prices to guide the unbalanced distribution network operation. Finally, the effectiveness of the risk-aware flexibility market is verified in a modified three-phase IEEE 34-node system. Results demonstrate that the flexibility market can quantify the impact of spatially correlated uncertainties and facilitate the utilization of flexible resources to mitigate uncertainties across the network.

Autonomous mobility on demand systems (AMoDS) will significantly affect the operation of coupled power distribution-urban transportation networks (PTNs) by the optimal dispatch of electric vehicles (EVs). This paper proposes an uncertainty method to analyze the operational states of PTNs with AMoDS. First, a PTN operation framework is designed considering the controllable EVs dispatched by AMoDS as well as the uncontrollable driving behaviors of other vehicle users. Then, a bi-level power-traffic flow (PTF) model is proposed to characterize the interaction of power distribution networks (PDNs) and urban transportation networks (UTNs). In the upper level, a social optimum model is established to minimize the operating cost of PDNs and UTNs embedded with controllable EVs. In the lower level, a stochastic user equilibrium (SUE) model is established to minimize the operating cost of uncontrollable EVs and gasoline vehicles (GVs) in UTNs. Finally, a probabilistic PTF analysis method is developed to evaluate PTN operations under environmental and human uncertainties. A regional sensitivity analysis method is proposed to identify the critical uncertainties and quantify the impacts of their distribution ranges on PTN operations. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the PTN consisting of a 21-bus PDN and a 20-node UTN.

A community integrated energy system (CIES) is an important carrier of the energy internet and smart city in geographical and functional terms. Its emergence provides a new solution to the problems of energy utilization and environmental pollution. To coordinate the integrated demand response and uncertainty of renewable energy generation (RGs), a data-driven two-stage distributionally robust optimization (DRO) model is constructed. A comprehensive norm consisting of the 1-norm and infinity-norm is used as the uncertainty probability distribution information set, thereby avoiding complex probability density information. To address multiple uncertainties of RGs, a generative adversarial network based on the Wasserstein distance with gradient penalty is proposed to generate RG scenarios, which has wide applicability. To further tap the potential of the demand response, we take into account the ambiguity of human thermal comfort and the thermal inertia of buildings. Thus, an integrated demand response mechanism is developed that effectively promotes the consumption of renewable energy. The proposed method is simulated in an actual CIES in North China. In comparison with traditional stochastic programming and robust optimization, it is verified that the proposed DRO model properly balances the relationship between economical operation and robustness while exhibiting stronger adaptability. Furthermore, our approach outperforms other commonly used DRO methods with better operational economy, lower renewable power curtailment rate, and higher computational efficiency.

Amongst various types of attacks, false data injection attack (FDIA) proves to be one of the top-priority cyber-related issues and has received increasing attention in recent years. However, so far little attention has been paid to privacy preservation issues in the detection of FDIAs in smart grid. Inspired by federated learning, a FDIA detection method based on secure federated deep learning is proposed in this paper by combining Transformer, federated learning and Paillier cryptosystem. The Transformer, as a detector deployed in edge nodes, delves deep into the connection between individual electrical quantities by using its multi-head self-attention mechanism. By using federated learning framework, our approach utilizes the data from all nodes to collaboratively train a detection model while preserving data privacy by kee** the data locally during training. To improve the security of federated learning, a secure federated learning scheme is designed by combing Paillier cryptosystem with federated learning. Through extensive experiments on the IEEE 14-bus and 118-bus test systems, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method are verifed.

Abstract:
In this letter, we propose a data-driven warm start approach, empowered by artificial neural networks, to boost the efficiency of convex relaxations in optimal gas flow. Case studies show that this approach significantly decreases the number of iterations for the convex-concave procedure algorithm, and optimality and feasibility of the solution can still be guaranteed.

Combined heat and power dispatch promotes interactions and synergies between electric power systems and district heating systems. However, nonlinear and nonconvex heating flow imposes significant challenges on finding qualified solutions efficiently. Most existing methods rely on constant flow assumptions to derive a linear heating flow model, sacrificing optimality for computational simplicity. This paper proposes a novel convex combined heat and power dispatch model based on model simplification and constraint relaxation, which improves solution quality and avoids assumptions on operating regimes of district heating systems. To alleviate mathematical complexity introduced by the commonly used node method, a simplified thermal dynamic model is proposed to capture temperature changes in networked pipelines. Conic and polyhedral relaxations are then applied to convexify the original problems with bilinear and quadratic equality constraints. Furthermore, an adaptive solution algorithm is proposed to successively reduce relaxation gaps based on dynamic bivariate partitioning, improving solution optimality with desirable computational efficiency. The proposed method is verified on a 33-bus electric power system integrated with a 30-node district heating system and compared to nonlinear programming solvers and constant-flow-based solutions.

Massive adoptions of combined heat and power (CHP) units necessitate the coordinated operation of power system and district heating system (DHS). Exploiting the reconfigurable property of district heating networks (DHNs) provides a cost-effective solution to enhance the flexibility of the power system by redistributing heat loads in DHS. In this paper, a unit commitment considering combined electricity and reconfigurable heating network (UC-CERHN) is proposed to coordinate the day-ahead scheduling of power system and DHS. The DHS is formulated as a nonlinear and mixed-integer model with considering the reconfigurable DHN. Also, an auxiliary energy flow variable is introduced in the formed DHS model to make the commitment problem tractable, where the computational burdens are significantly reduced. Extensive case studies are presented to validate the effectiveness of the approximated model and illustrate the potential benefits of the proposed method with respect to congestion management and wind power accommodation. An optimal scheduling model for a microgrid participating in the electricity distribution market in interaction with a Distribution Market Operator (DMO) is proposed in this paper. The DMO administers the established electricity market in the distribution level, sets electricity prices, determines the amount of the power exchange among market participants, and interacts with the Independent System Operator (ISO). Considering a predetermined main grid power transfer to the microgrid, the microgrid scheduling problem will aim at balancing the power supply and demand while taking financial objectives into account. Numerical simulations exhibit the application and the effectiveness of the proposed market-based microgrid scheduling model and further investigate merits over a price-based scheme.

The increasing penetration of renewable energy in recent years has led to more uncertainties in power systems. These uncertainties have to be accommodated by flexible re- sources (i.e. upward and downward generation reserves). In this paper, a novel concept, Uncertainty Marginal Price (UMP), is proposed to price both the uncertainty and reserve. At the same time, the energy is priced at Locational Marginal Price (LMP). A novel market clearing mechanism is proposed to credit the gener- ation and reserve and to charge the load and uncertainty within the Robust Unit Commitment (RUC) in the Day-ahead market. We derive the UMPs and LMPs in the robust optimization framework. UMP helps allocate the cost of generation reserves to uncertainty sources. We prove that the proposed market clearing mechanism leads to partial market equilibrium. We find that transmission reserves must be kept explicitly in addition to generation reserves for uncertainty accommodation. We prove that transmission reserves for ram** delivery may lead to Financial Transmission Right (FTR) underfunding in existing markets. The FTR underfunding can be covered by congestion fund collected from uncertainty payment in the proposed market clearing mechanism. Simulations on a six-bus system and the IEEE 118-bus system are performed to illustrate the new concepts and the market clearing mechanism.
