We report results from millimeter wave vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) channel measurements conducted on Sept. 25, 2018 in an urban street environment, down-town Vienna, Austria. Measurements of a frequency-division multiplexed multiple-input single-output channel have been acquired with a time-domain channel sounder at 60 GHz with a bandwidth of 100 MHz and a frequency resolution of 5 MHz. Two horn antennas were used on a moving transmitter vehicle: one horn emitted a beam towards the horizon and the second horn emitted an elevated beam at 15-degrees up-tilt. This configuration was chosen to assess the impact of beam elevation on V2I communication channel characteristics: propagation loss and sparsity of the local scattering function in the delay-Doppler domain. The measurement results within urban speed limits show high sparsity in the delay-Doppler domain.

In this paper, we present a novel real-time multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel sounder for the 28 GHz band. Until now, most investigations of the directional characteristics of millimeter-wave channels have used mechanically rotating horn antennas. In contrast, the sounder presented here is capable of performing horizontal and vertical beam steering with the help of phased arrays. Due to its fast beam-switching capability, the proposed sounder can perform measurements that are directionally resolved both at the transmitter(TX) and receiver (RX) in 1.44 milliseconds compared to the minutes or even hours required for rotating horn antenna sounders. This not only enables measurement of more TX-RX locations for a better statistical validity but also allows to perform directional analysis in dynamic environments. The short measurement time combined with the high phase stability limits the phase drift between TX and RX, enabling phase-coherent sounding of all beam pairs even when TX and RX have no cabled connection for synchronization without any delay ambiguity. Furthermore, the phase stability over time enables complex RX waveform averaging to improve the signal to noise ratio during high path loss measurements. The paper discusses both the system design as well as the measurements performed for verification of the sounder performance. Furthermore, we present sample results from double directional measurements in dynamic environments.

This paper investigates the impact of array switching patterns on the accuracy of parameter estimation of multipath components for a time division multiplexed (TDM) channel sounder. To measure fast time-varying channels, the conventional uniform array switching pattern poses a fundamental limit of the number of antennas that a TDM channel sounder can utilize. We propose a method, which is based on the simulated annealing algorithm, to find non-uniform array switching patterns for realistic antenna arrays, so that we can extend the Doppler estimation range of the channel sounder by suppressing the high sidelobes in the spatio-temporal ambiguity function. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the optimal switching sequence leads to significantly smaller root mean square errors of both direction of departure and Doppler. Results can be applied in both vehicle-to-vehicle and mobile millimeter wave MIMO channel measurements.
