Volumetric medical segmentation models have achieved significant success on organ and tumor-based segmentation tasks in recent years. However, their vulnerability to adversarial attacks remains largely unexplored, raising serious concerns regarding the real-world deployment of tools employing such models in the healthcare sector. This underscores the importance of investigating the robustness of existing models. In this context, our work aims to empirically examine the adversarial robustness across current volumetric segmentation architectures, encompassing Convolutional, Transformer, and Mamba-based models. We extend this investigation across four volumetric segmentation datasets, evaluating robustness under both white box and black box adversarial attacks. Overall, we observe that while both pixel and frequency-based attacks perform reasonably well under white box setting, the latter performs significantly better under transfer-based black box attacks. Across our experiments, we observe transformer-based models show higher robustness than convolution-based models with Mamba-based models being the most vulnerable. Additionally, we show that large-scale training of volumetric segmentation models improves the model's robustness against adversarial attacks. The code and pretrained models will be made available at https://github.com/HashmatShadab/Robustness-of-Volumetric-Medical-Segmentation-Models.

Brain tumor segmentation is a fundamental step in assessing a patient's cancer progression. However, manual segmentation demands significant expert time to identify tumors in 3D multimodal brain MRI scans accurately. This reliance on manual segmentation makes the process prone to intra- and inter-observer variability. This work proposes a brain tumor segmentation method as part of the BraTS-GoAT challenge. The task is to segment tumors in brain MRI scans automatically from various populations, such as adults, pediatrics, and underserved sub-Saharan Africa. We employ a recent CNN architecture for medical image segmentation, namely MedNeXt, as our baseline, and we implement extensive model ensembling and postprocessing for inference. Our experiments show that our method performs well on the unseen validation set with an average DSC of 85.54% and HD95 of 27.88. Imaging modalities such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) are key in cancer detection, inspiring Deep Neural Networks (DNN) models that merge these scans for tumor segmentation. When both CT and PET scans are available, it is common to combine them as two channels of the input to the segmentation model. However, this method requires both scan types during training and inference, posing a challenge due to the limited availability of PET scans, thereby sometimes limiting the process to CT scans only. Hence, there is a need to develop a flexible DNN architecture that can be trained/updated using only CT scans but can effectively utilize PET scans when they become available. In this work, we propose a parameter-efficient multi-modal adaptation (PEMMA) framework for lightweight upgrading of a transformer-based segmentation model trained only on CT scans to also incorporate PET scans. The benefits of the proposed approach are two-fold. Firstly, we leverage the inherent modularity of the transformer architecture and perform low-rank adaptation (LoRA) of the attention weights to achieve parameter-efficient adaptation. Secondly, since the PEMMA framework attempts to minimize cross modal entanglement, it is possible to subsequently update the combined model using only one modality, without causing catastrophic forgetting of the other modality. Our proposed method achieves comparable results with the performance of early fusion techniques with just 8% of the trainable parameters, especially with a remarkable +28% improvement on the average dice score on PET scans when trained on a single modality.

Deploying deep learning (DL) models in medical applications relies on predictive performance and other critical factors, such as conveying trustworthy predictive uncertainty. Uncertainty estimation (UE) methods provide potential solutions for evaluating prediction reliability and improving the model confidence calibration. Despite increasing interest in UE, challenges persist, such as the need for explicit methods to capture aleatoric uncertainty and align uncertainty estimates with real-life disagreements among domain experts. This paper proposes an Expert Disagreement-Guided Uncertainty Estimation (EDUE) for medical image segmentation. By leveraging variability in ground-truth annotations from multiple raters, we guide the model during training and incorporate random sampling-based strategies to enhance calibration confidence. Our method achieves 55% and 23% improvement in correlation on average with expert disagreements at the image and pixel levels, respectively, better calibration, and competitive segmentation performance compared to the state-of-the-art deep ensembles, requiring only a single forward pass.

The accurate identification and segmentation of tumor types hold paramount importance in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating highly fatal brain tumors. The BraTS challenge serves as a platform for researchers to tackle this issue by participating in open challenges focused on tumor segmentation. This study outlines our methodology for segmenting tumors in the context of two distinct tasks from the BraTS 2023 challenge: Adult Glioma and Pediatric Tumors. Our approach leverages two encoder-decoder-based CNN models, namely SegResNet and MedNeXt, for segmenting three distinct subregions of tumors. We further introduce a set of robust postprocessing to improve the segmentation, especially for the newly introduced BraTS 2023 metrics. The specifics of our approach and comprehensive performance analyses are expounded upon in this work. Our proposed approach achieves third place in the BraTS 2023 Adult Glioma Segmentation Challenges with an average of 0.8313 and 36.38 Dice and HD95 scores on the test set, respectively.

Diffusion models have demonstrated powerful data generation capabilities in various research fields such as image generation. However, in the field of vibration signal generation, the criteria for evaluating the quality of the generated signal are different from that of image generation and there is a fundamental difference between them. At present, there is no research on the ability of diffusion model to generate vibration signal. In this paper, a Time Series Diffusion Method (TSDM) is proposed for vibration signal generation, leveraging the foundational principles of diffusion models. The TSDM uses an improved U-net architecture with attention block, ResBlock and TimeEmbedding to effectively segment and extract features from one-dimensional time series data. It operates based on forward diffusion and reverse denoising processes for time-series generation. Experimental validation is conducted using single-frequency, multi-frequency datasets, and bearing fault datasets. The results show that TSDM can accurately generate the single-frequency and multi-frequency features in the time series and retain the basic frequency features for the diffusion generation results of the bearing fault series. It is also found that the original DDPM could not generate high quality vibration signals, but the improved U-net in TSDM, which applied the combination of attention block and ResBlock, could effectively improve the quality of vibration signal generation. Finally, TSDM is applied to the small sample fault diagnosis of three public bearing fault datasets, and the results show that the accuracy of small sample fault diagnosis of the three datasets is improved by 32.380%, 18.355% and 9.298% at most, respectively.

This paper explores the potential of near-field beamforming (NFBF) in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems with extremely large-scale arrays (XL-arrays). The large-scale antenna arrays increase the possibility of having communication users and targets of interest in the near field of the base station (BS). The paper first establishes the models of electromagnetic (EM) near-field spherical waves and far-field plane waves. With the models, we analyze the near-field beam focusing ability and the far-field beam steering ability by finding the gain-loss mathematical expression caused by the far-field steering vector mismatch in the near-field case. We formulate the NFBF design problem as minimizing the weighted summation of radar and the communication beamforming errors under a total power constraint and solve this quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem using the least squares (LS) method. Moreover, the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) for target parameter estimation is derived to verify the performance of NFBF. Furthermore, we also perform power minimization using convex optimization while ensuring the required communication and sensing quality-of-service (QoS). The simulation results show the influence of model mismatch on near-field ISAC and the performance gain of transmit beamforming from the additional distance dimension of near-field.

Variability in staining protocols, such as different slide preparation techniques, chemicals, and scanner configurations, can result in a diverse set of whole slide images (WSIs). This distribution shift can negatively impact the performance of deep learning models on unseen samples, presenting a significant challenge for develo** new computational pathology applications. In this study, we propose a method for improving the generalizability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to stain changes in a single-source setting for semantic segmentation. Recent studies indicate that style features mainly exist as covariances in earlier network layers. We design a channel attention mechanism based on these findings that detects stain-specific features and modify the previously proposed stain-invariant training scheme. We reweigh the outputs of earlier layers and pass them to the stain-adversarial training branch. We evaluate our method on multi-center, multi-stain datasets and demonstrate its effectiveness through interpretability analysis. Our approach achieves substantial improvements over baselines and competitive performance compared to other methods, as measured by various evaluation metrics. We also show that combining our method with stain augmentation leads to mutually beneficial results and outperforms other techniques. The number of studies on deep learning for medical diagnosis is expanding, and these systems are often claimed to outperform clinicians. However, only a few systems have shown medical efficacy. From this perspective, we examine a wide range of deep learning algorithms for the assessment of glioblastoma - a common brain tumor in older adults that is lethal. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are the standard treatments for glioblastoma patients. The methylation status of the MGMT promoter, a specific genetic sequence found in the tumor, affects chemotherapy's effectiveness. MGMT promoter methylation improves chemotherapy response and survival in several cancers. MGMT promoter methylation is determined by a tumor tissue biopsy, which is then genetically tested. This lengthy and invasive procedure increases the risk of infection and other complications. Thus, researchers have used deep learning models to examine the tumor from brain MRI scans to determine the MGMT promoter's methylation state. We employ deep learning models and one of the largest public MRI datasets of 585 participants to predict the methylation status of the MGMT promoter in glioblastoma tumors using MRI scans. We test these models using Grad-CAM, occlusion sensitivity, feature visualizations, and training loss landscapes. Our results show no correlation between these two, indicating that external cohort data should be used to verify these models' performance to assure the accuracy and reliability of deep learning systems in cancer diagnosis.

When oncologists estimate cancer patient survival, they rely on multimodal data. Even though some multimodal deep learning methods have been proposed in the literature, the majority rely on having two or more independent networks that share knowledge at a later stage in the overall model. On the other hand, oncologists do not do this in their analysis but rather fuse the information in their brain from multiple sources such as medical images and patient history. This work proposes a deep learning method that mimics oncologists' analytical behavior when quantifying cancer and estimating patient survival. We propose TMSS, an end-to-end Transformer based Multimodal network for Segmentation and Survival prediction that leverages the superiority of transformers that lies in their abilities to handle different modalities. With the advancements in underwater wireless communications, internet of underwater things (IoUT) realization is inevitable to enable many practical applications, such as exploring ocean resources, ocean monitoring, underwater navigation, and surveillance. The IoUT network comprises battery-operated sensor nodes, and replacing or charging such batteries is challenging due to the harsh ocean environment. Hence, an energy-efficient IoUT network development becomes vital to improve the network lifetime. Therefore, this paper proposes unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided energy-efficient wake-up designs to activate the underwater IoT nodes on-demand and reduce their energy consumption. Buses and heavy vehicles have more blind spots compared to cars and other road vehicles due to their large sizes. Therefore, accidents caused by these heavy vehicles are more fatal and result in severe injuries to other road users. These possible blind-spot collisions can be identified early using vision-based object detection approaches. Yet, the existing state-of-the-art vision-based object detection models rely heavily on a single feature descriptor for making decisions. In this research, the design of two convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based on high-level feature descriptors and their integration with faster R-CNN is proposed to detect blind-spot collisions for heavy vehicles. Moreover, a fusion approach is proposed to integrate two pre-trained networks (i.e., Resnet 50 and Resnet 101) for extracting high level features for blind-spot vehicle detection. The fusion of features significantly improves the performance of faster R-CNN and outperformed the existing state-of-the-art methods. Both approaches are validated on a self-recorded blind-spot vehicle detection dataset for buses and an online LISA dataset for vehicle detection. For both proposed approaches, a false detection rate (FDR) of 3.05% and 3.49% are obtained for the self recorded dataset, making these approaches suitable for real time applications.

In medical imaging analysis, deep learning has shown promising results. We frequently rely on volumetric data to segment medical images, necessitating the use of 3D architectures, which are commended for their capacity to capture interslice context. However, because of the 3D convolutions, max pooling, up-convolutions, and other operations utilized in these networks, these architectures are often more inefficient in terms of time and computation than their 2D equivalents. Furthermore, there are few 3D pretrained model weights, and pretraining is often difficult. We present a simple yet effective 2D method to handle 3D data while efficiently embedding the 3D knowledge during training. We propose transforming volumetric data into 2D super images and segmenting with 2D networks to solve these challenges. Our method generates a super-resolution image by stitching slices side by side in the 3D image. We expect deep neural networks to capture and learn these properties spatially despite losing depth information. This work aims to present a novel perspective when dealing with volumetric data, and we test the hypothesis using CNN and ViT networks as well as self-supervised pretraining. While attaining equal, if not superior, results to 3D networks utilizing only 2D counterparts, the model complexity is reduced by around threefold. Because volumetric data is relatively scarce, we anticipate that our approach will entice more studies, particularly in medical imaging analysis.

The number of disasters has increased over the past decade where these calamities significantly affect the functionality of communication networks. In the context of 6G, airborne and spaceborne networks offer hope in disaster recovery to serve the underserved and to be resilient in calamities. Therefore, this paper surveys the state-of-the-art literature on post-disaster wireless communication networks and provides insights for the future establishment of such networks. In particular, we first give an overview of the works investigating the general procedures and strategies for counteracting any large-scale disasters. Then, we present the possible technological solutions for post-disaster communications, such as the recovery of the terrestrial infrastructure, installing aerial networks, and using spaceborne networks. Afterward, we shed light on the technological aspects of post-disaster networks, primarily the physical and networking issues. We present the literature on channel modeling, coverage and capacity, radio resource management, localization, and energy efficiency in the physical layer and discuss the integrated space-air-ground architectures, routing, delay-tolerant/software-defined networks, and edge computing in the networking layer. This paper also presents interesting simulation results which can provide practical guidelines about the deployment of ad hoc network architectures in emergency scenarios. Finally, we present several promising research directions, namely backhauling, placement optimization of aerial base stations, and the mobility-related aspects that come into play when deploying aerial networks, such as planning their trajectories and the consequent handovers.

Accurate prognosis of a tumor can help doctors provide a proper course of treatment and, therefore, save the lives of many. Traditional machine learning algorithms have been eminently useful in crafting prognostic models in the last few decades. Recently, deep learning algorithms have shown significant improvement when develo** diagnosis and prognosis solutions to different healthcare problems. However, most of these solutions rely solely on either imaging or clinical data. Utilizing patient tabular data such as demographics and patient medical history alongside imaging data in a multimodal approach to solve a prognosis task has started to gain more interest recently and has the potential to create more accurate solutions. The main issue when using clinical and imaging data to train a deep learning model is to decide on how to combine the information from these sources. We propose a multimodal network that ensembles deep multi-task logistic regression (MTLR), Cox proportional hazard (CoxPH) and CNN models to predict prognostic outcomes for patients with head and neck tumors using patients' clinical and imaging (CT and PET) data. Features from CT and PET scans are fused and then combined with patients' electronic health records for the prediction. The proposed model is trained and tested on 224 and 101 patient records respectively. Experimental results show that our proposed ensemble solution achieves a C-index of 0.72 on The HECKTOR test set that saved us the first place in prognosis task of the HECKTOR challenge. The full implementation based on PyTorch is available on \url{https://github.com/numanai/BioMedIA-Hecktor2021}.

Long-range (LoRa) technology is most widely used for enabling low-power wide area networks (WANs) on unlicensed frequency bands. Despite its modest data rates, it provides extensive coverage for low-power devices, making it an ideal communication system for many internet of things (IoT) applications. In general, LoRa is considered as the physical layer, whereas LoRaWAN is the medium access control (MAC) layer of the LoRa stack that adopts a star topology to enable communication between multiple end devices (EDs) and the network gateway. The chirp spread spectrum modulation deals with LoRa signal interference and ensures long-range communication. At the same time, the adaptive data rate mechanism allows EDs to dynamically alter some LoRa features, such as the spreading factor (SF), code rate, and carrier frequency to address the time variance of communication conditions in dense networks. Despite the high LoRa connectivity demand, LoRa signals interference and concurrent transmission collisions are major limitations. Therefore, to enhance LoRaWAN capacity, the LoRa Alliance released many LoRaWAN versions, and the research community has provided numerous solutions to develop scalable LoRaWAN technology. Hence, we thoroughly examine LoRaWAN scalability challenges and state-of-the-art solutions in both the physical and MAC layers. These solutions primarily rely on SF, logical, and frequency channel assignment, whereas others propose new network topologies or implement signal processing schemes to cancel the interference and allow LoRaWAN to connect more EDs efficiently. A summary of the existing solutions in the literature is provided at the end of the paper, describing the advantages and disadvantages of each solution and suggesting possible enhancements as future research directions.

Glioblastoma is a common brain malignancy that tends to occur in older adults and is almost always lethal. The effectiveness of chemotherapy, being the standard treatment for most cancer types, can be improved if a particular genetic sequence in the tumor known as MGMT promoter is methylated. However, to identify the state of the MGMT promoter, the conventional approach is to perform a biopsy for genetic analysis, which is time and effort consuming. A couple of recent publications proposed a connection between the MGMT promoter state and the MRI scans of the tumor and hence suggested the use of deep learning models for this purpose. Therefore, in this work, we use one of the most extensive datasets, BraTS 2021, to study the potency of employing deep learning solutions, including 2D and 3D CNN models and vision transformers. After conducting a thorough analysis of the models' performance, we concluded that there seems to be no connection between the MRI scans and the state of the MGMT promoter.

Recently, there has been growing research on develo** interference-aware routing (IAR) protocols for supporting multiple concurrent transmission in next-generation wireless communication systems. The existing IAR protocols do not consider node cooperation while establishing the routes because motivating the nodes to cooperate and modeling that cooperation is not a trivial task. In addition, the information about the cooperative behavior of a node is not directly visible to neighboring nodes. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a new routing method in which the nodes' cooperation information is utilized to improve the performance of edge computing-enabled 5G networks. The proposed metric is a function of created and received interference in the network. The received interference term ensures that the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) at the route remains above the threshold value, while the created interference term ensures that those nodes are selected to forward the packet that creates low interference for other nodes. The results show that the proposed solution improves ad hoc networks' performance compared to conventional routing protocols in terms of high network throughput and low outage probability.

Localization of sensor nodes in the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is of considerable significance due to its various applications, such as navigation, data tagging, and detection of underwater objects. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a hybrid Bayesian multidimensional scaling (BMDS) based localization technique that can work on a fully hybrid IoUT network where the nodes can communicate using either optical, magnetic induction, and acoustic technologies. These technologies are already used for communication in the underwater environment; however, lacking localization solutions. Optical and magnetic induction communication achieves higher data rates for short communication. On the contrary, acoustic waves provide a low data rate for long-range underwater communication. The proposed method collectively uses optical, magnetic induction, and acoustic communication-based ranging to estimate the underwater sensor nodes' final locations. Moreover, we also analyze the proposed scheme by deriving the hybrid Cramer Rao lower bound (HCRLB). Simulation results provide a complete comparative analysis of the proposed method with the literature.

This paper overviews point-to-point (P2P) links for integrated satellite-aerial networks, which are envisioned to be among the key enablers of the sixth-generation (6G) of wireless networks vision. The paper first outlines the unique characteristics of such integrated large-scale complex networks, often denoted by spatial networks, and focuses on two particular space-air infrastructures, namely, satellites networks and high-altitude platforms (HAPs). The paper then classifies the connecting P2P communications links as satellite-to-satellite links at the same layer (SSLL), satellite-to-satellite links at different layers (SSLD), and HAP-to-HAP links (HHL). The paper overviews each layer of such spatial networks separately, and highlights the possible natures of the connecting links (i.e., radio-frequency or free-space optics) with a dedicated overview to the existing link-budget results. The paper, afterwards, presents the prospective merit of realizing such an integrated satellite-HAP network towards providing broadband services in under-served and remote areas. Finally, the paper sheds light on several future research directions in the context of spatial networks, namely large-scale network optimization, intelligent offloading, smart platforms, energy efficiency, multiple access schemes, and distributed spatial networks.

Internet of underwater things (IoUT) is a technological revolution that could mark a new era for scientific, industrial, and military underwater applications. To mitigate the hostile underwater channel characteristics, this paper hybridizes underwater acoustic and optical wireless communications to achieve a ubiquitous control and high-speed low-latency networking performance, respectively. Since underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC) suffers from limited range, it requires effective multi-hop routing solutions. In this regard, we propose a Sector-based Opportunistic Routing (SectOR) protocol. Unlike the traditional routing (TR) techniques which unicast packets to a unique relay, opportunistic routing (OR) targets a set of candidate relays by leveraging the broadcast nature of the UOWC channel. OR improves the packet delivery ratio as the likelihood of having at least one successful packet reception is much higher than that in conventional unicast routing. Contingent upon the performance characterization of a single-hop link, we obtain a variety of local and global metrics to evaluate the fitness of a candidate set (CS) and prioritize the members of a CS. Since rate-error and range-beamwidth tradeoffs yield different candidate set diversities, we develop a candidate filtering and searching algorithm to find the optimal sector-shaped coverage region by scanning the feasible search space. Moreover, a hybrid acoustic/optic coordination mechanism is considered to avoid duplicate transmission of the relays. Numerical results show that SectOR protocol can perform even better than an optimal unicast routing protocol in well-connected UOWNs.

However, underwater localization is prone to hostile environmental impediments such as drifts due to the surface and deep currents. These cause uncertainty in the deployed anchor node positions and pose daunting challenges to achieve accurate location estimations. Therefore, this paper analyzes the performance of three-dimensional (3D) localization for UOWSNs and derive a closed-form expression for the Cramer Rao lower bound (CRLB) by using time of arrival (ToA) and angle of arrival (AoA) measurements under the presence of uncertainty in anchor node positions. Numerical results validate the analytical findings by comparing the localization accuracy in scenarios with and without anchor nodes position uncertainty. Current and future wireless applications strongly rely on precise real-time localization. A number of applications such as smart cities, Internet of Things (IoT), medical services, automotive industry, underwater exploration, public safety, and military systems require reliable and accurate localization techniques. Generally, the most popular localization/ positioning system is the Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS works well for outdoor environments but fails in indoor and harsh environments. Therefore, a number of other wireless local localization techniques are developed based on terrestrial wireless networks, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and wireless local area networks (WLANs). Also, there exist localization techniques which fuse two or more technologies to find out the location of the user, also called signal of opportunity based localization. Most of the localization techniques require ranging measurements such as time of arrival (ToA), time difference of arrival (TDoA), direction of arrival (DoA) and received signal strength (RSS). There are also range-free localization techniques which consider the proximity information and do not require the actual ranging measurements. Dimensionality reduction techniques are famous among the range free localization schemes. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is one of the dimensionality reduction technique which has been used extensively in the recent past for wireless networks localization. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is presented for MDS and MDS based localization techniques in WSNs, Internet of Things (IoT), cognitive radio networks, and 5G networks.

The rapid growth of the world's population demands more natural resources, food, and space. World-renowned physicist Stephan Hawking has argued that soon we will require another world to live on because we are running out of space and natural resources. This ever-increasing demand for resources and space needs novel technologies to explore natural resources, produce more crops, and explore outer space. Internet of X-things (X-IoT) is an enabling technology to overcome all of the above issues. In this article, we have presented an overview of a unified framework of X-IoT. The framework of X-IoT consists of three major categories. The first one is the Internet of underwater things (IoUT) for smart oceans. The second category is the Internet of underground things (IoUGT) for smart agriculture, seismic monitoring, and Oil/Gas fields. The third category is the Internet of space things (IoST) for outer space exploration, to provide global coverage, and to enable inter-satellite communications. Through this framework, we get to know what has been done since recently and how the technical challenges across the broad spectrum of emerging use cases under the water, underground and over the space are converging toward future solutions.

This paper proposes a received signal strength (RSS) based localization framework for energy harvesting underwater optical wireless sensor networks (EH-UOWSNs), where the optical noise sources and channel impairments of seawater pose significant challenges on range estimation. In UOWSNs energy limitation is another major problem due to the limited battery power and difficulty to replace or recharge the battery of an underwater sensor node. In the proposed framework, sensor nodes with insufficient battery harvest ambient energy and start communicating once they have sufficient storage of energy. Network localization is carried out by measuring the RSSs of active nodes, which are modeled based on the underwater optical communication channel characteristics. Thereafter, block kernel matrices are computed for RSS-based range measurements. Unlike the traditional shortest-path approach, the proposed technique reduces the estimation error of the shortest path for each block kernel matrix. Once the complete block kernel matrices are available, a closed form localization technique is developed to find the location of every optical sensor node in the network. An analytical expression for the Cramer Rao lower bound (CRLB) is also derived as a benchmark to evaluate the localization performance of the developed technique. Extensive simulations show that the proposed framework outperforms the well-known network localization techniques.

This paper provides recent advances in the area of Internet of Underground Things (IoUT) with emphasis on enabling communication technologies, networking issues, and localization techniques. IoUT is enabled by underground things (sensors), communication technology, and networking protocols. This new paradigm of IoUT facilitates the integration of sensing and communication in the underground environment for various industries such as oil and gas, agriculture, seismic map**, and border monitoring. These applications require to gather relevant information from the deployed underground things. However, the harsh underground propagation environment including sand, rock, and watersheds do not allow the use of single communication technology for information transfer between the surface and the underground things. Therefore, various wireless and wired communication technologies are used for underground communication. The wireless technologies are based on acoustic waves, electromagnetic waves, magnetic induction and visible light communication while the wired technologies use coaxial cable and optical fibers. In this paper, state-of-art communication technologies are surveyed, and the respective networking and localization techniques for IoUT are presented. Moreover, the advances and applications of IoUT are also reported. Also, new research challenges for the design and implementation of IoUT are identified.

Magnetic Induction (MI) is an efficient wireless communication method to deploy operational internet of underground things (IOUT) for oil and gas reservoirs. The IOUT consists of underground things which are capable of sensing the underground environment and communicating with the surface. The MI-based IOUT enable many applications, such as monitoring of the oil rigs, optimized fracturing, and optimized extraction. Most of these applications are dependent on the location of the underground things and therefore require accurate localization techniques. The existing localization techniques for MI-based underground sensing networks are two-dimensional and do not characterize the achievable accuracy of the developed methods which are both crucial and challenging tasks. Therefore, this paper presents the expression of the Cramer Rao lower bound (CRLB) for three-dimensional MI-based IOUT localization which takes into account the channel parameters of the underground magnetic-induction. The derived CRLB provide the suggestions for an MI-based underground localization system by associating the system parameters with the error trend. Numerical results demonstrate that localization accuracy is affected by different channel and networks parameters such as the number of anchors, noise variance, frequency, and the number of underground things.

On the contrary of low speed and high delay acoustic systems, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) can deliver a high speed and low latency service at the expense of short communication ranges. Therefore, multihop communication is of utmost importance to improve degree of connectivity and overall performance of underwater optical wireless networks (UOWNs). In this regard, this paper investigates relaying and routing techniques and provides their end-to-end (E2E) performance analysis under the location uncertainty. To achieve robust and reliable links, we first consider adaptive beamwidths and derive the divergence angles under the absence and presence of a pointing-acquisitioning-and-tracking (PAT) mechanism. Thereafter, important E2E performance metrics (e.g., data rate, bit error rate, transmission power, amplifier gain, etc.) are obtained for two potential relaying techniques; decode & forward (DF) and optical amplify & forward (AF). We develop centralized routing schemes for both relaying techniques to optimize E2E rate, bit error rate, and power consumption. Alternatively, a distributed routing protocol, namely Light Path Routing (LiPaR), is proposed by leveraging the range-beamwidth tradeoff of UOWCs. LiPaR is especially shown to be favorable when there is no PAT mechanism and available network information. In order to show the benefits of multihop communications, extensive simulations are conducted to compare different routing and relaying schemes under different network parameters and underwater environments.

Recently, a camera or an image sensor receiver based optical wireless communications (OWC) techniques have attracted particular interest in areas such as the internet of things, indoor localization, motion capture, and intelligent transportation systems. As a supplementary technique of high-speed OWC based on photo-detectors, communications hinging on image sensors as receivers do not need much modification to the current infrastructure, such that the implementation complexity and cost are quite low. Therefore, in this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of optical camera communication (OCC) techniques, and their use in localization, navigation, and motion capture. This survey is distinguishable from the existing reviews on this topic by covering multiple aspects of OCC and its various applications. The first part of the paper focuses on the standardization, channel characterization, modulation, coding, and synchronization of OCC systems while the second part of the article presents the literature on OCC based localization, navigation, and motion capture. Finally, in the last part of the paper, we present the challenges and future research directions of OCC.

Location is one of the basic information required for underwater optical wireless sensor networks (UOWSNs) for different purposes such as relating the sensing measurements with precise sensor positions, enabling efficient geographic routing techniques, and sustaining link connectivity between the nodes. Even though various two-dimensional UOWSNs localization methods have been proposed in the past, the directive nature of optical wireless communications and three-dimensional (3D) deployment of sensors require to develop 3D underwater localization methods. Additionally, the localization accuracy of the network strongly depends on the placement of the anchors. Therefore, we propose a robust 3D localization method for partially connected UOWSNs which can accommodate the outliers and optimize the placement of the anchors to improve the localization accuracy. The proposed method formulates the problem of missing pairwise distances and outliers as an optimization problem which is solved through half quadratic minimization. Furthermore, analysis is provided to optimally place the anchors in the network which improves the localization accuracy. The problem of optimal anchor placement is formulated as a combination of Fisher information matrices for the sensor nodes where the condition of D-optimality is satisfied. The numerical results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the literature substantially in the presence of outliers.
