In this paper, we investigate a novel minimum length scheduling problem to determine the optimal power control, and scheduling for constant and continuous rate models, while considering concurrent transmission of users, energy causality, maximum transmit power and traffic demand constraints. The formulated optimization problems are shown to be non-convex and combinatorial in nature, thus, difficult to solve for the global optimum. As a solution strategy, first, we propose optimal polynomial time algorithms for the power control problem considering constant and continuous rate models based on the evaluation of Perron-Frobenius conditions and usage of bisection method, respectively. Then, the proposed optimal power control solutions are used to determine the optimal transmission time for a subset of users that will be scheduled by the scheduling algorithms. For the constant rate scheduling problem, we propose a heuristic algorithm that aims to maximize the number of concurrently transmitting users by maximizing the allowable interference on each user without violating the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) requirements. For the continuous rate scheduling problem, we define a penalty function representing the advantage of concurrent transmission over individual transmission of the users. Following the optimality analysis of the penalty metric and demonstration of the equivalence between schedule length minimization and minimization of the sum of penalties, we propose a heuristic algorithm based on the allocation of the concurrently transmitting users with the goal of minimizing the sum penalties over the schedule. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the successive transmission and concurrent transmission of randomly selected users for different HAP transmit powers, network densities and network size.

The society as a whole, and many vertical sectors in particular, is becoming increasingly digitalized. Machine Type Communication (MTC), encompassing its massive and critical aspects, and ubiquitous wireless connectivity are among the main enablers of such digitization at large. The recently introduced 5G New Radio is natively designed to support both aspects of MTC to promote the digital transformation of the society. However, it is evident that some of the more demanding requirements cannot be fully supported by 5G networks. Alongside, further development of the society towards 2030 will give rise to new and more stringent requirements on wireless connectivity in general, and MTC in particular. Driven by the societal trends towards 2030, the next generation (6G) will be an agile and efficient convergent network serving a set of diverse service classes and a wide range of key performance indicators (KPI). This white paper explores the main drivers and requirements of an MTC-optimized 6G network, and discusses the following six key research questions:
- Will the main KPIs of 5G continue to be the dominant KPIs in 6G; or will there emerge new key metrics?
- How to deliver different E2E service mandates with different KPI requirements considering joint-optimization at the physical up to the application layer?
- What are the key enablers towards designing ultra-low power receivers and highly efficient sleep modes?
- How to tackle a disruptive rather than incremental joint design of a massively scalable waveform and medium access policy for global MTC connectivity?
- How to support new service classes characterizing mission-critical and dependable MTC in 6G?
- What are the potential enablers of long term, lightweight and flexible privacy and security schemes considering MTC device requirements?

In this paper, we consider a wireless powered communication network where multiple users with RF energy harvesting capabilities communicate to a hybrid energy and information access point (HAP) in full-duplex mode. Each user has to transmit a certain amount of data with a transmission rate from a finite set of discrete rate levels, using the energy initially available in its battery and the energy it can harvest until the end of its transmission. Considering this model, we propose a novel discrete rate based minimum length scheduling problem to determine the optimal power control, rate adaptation and transmission schedule subject to data, energy causality and maximum transmit power constraints. The proposed optimization problem is proven to be NP-hard which requires exponential-time algorithms to solve for the global optimum. As a solution strategy, first, we demonstrate that the power control and rate adaptation, and scheduling problems can be solved separately in the optimal solution. For the power control and rate adaptation problem, we derive the optimal solution based on the proposed minimum length scheduling slot definition. For the scheduling, we classify the problem based on the distribution of minimum length scheduling slots of the users over time. For the non-overlap** slots scenario, we present the optimal scheduling algorithm. For the overlap** scenario, we propose a polynomial-time heuristic scheduling algorithm.

Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting is key in attaining perpetual lifetime for time-critical wireless powered communication networks due to full control on energy transfer, far field region, small and low-cost circuitry. In this paper, we propose a novel minimum length scheduling problem to determine the optimal power control, time allocation and transmission schedule subject to data, energy causality and maximum transmit power constraints in a full-duplex wireless powered communication network. We first formulate the problem as a mixed integer non-linear programming problem and conjecture that the problem is NP-hard. As a solution strategy, we demonstrate that the power control and time allocation, and scheduling problems can be solved separately in the optimal solution. For the power control and time allocation problem, we derive the optimal solution by using Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. For the scheduling, we introduce a penalty function allowing reformulation as a sum penalty minimization problem. Upon derivation of the optimality conditions based on the characteristics of the penalty function, we propose two polynomial-time heuristic algorithms and a reduced-complexity exact algorithm employing smart pruning techniques. Via extensive simulations, we illustrate that the proposed heuristic schemes outperform the previously proposed schemes for predetermined transmission order of users and achieve close-to-optimal solutions.

In this paper, we consider a full duplex wireless powered communication network where multiple users with RF energy harvesting capabilities communicate to a hybrid energy and information access point. An optimization framework is proposed with the objective of maximizing the sum throughput of the users subject to energy causality and maximum transmit power constraints considering a realistic energy harvesting model incorporating initial battery levels of the users. The joint optimization of power control, time allocation and scheduling is mathematically formulated as a mixed integer non linear programming problem which is hard to solve for a global optimum. The optimal power and time allocation and scheduling decisions are investigated separately based on the optimality analysis on the optimization variables. Optimal power and time allocation problem is proven to be convex for a given transmission order. Based on the derived optimality conditions, we propose a fast polynomial-time complexity heuristic algorithm. We illustrate that the proposed algorithm performs very close-to-optimal while significantly outperforming an equal time allocation based scheduling scheme.

For minimum length scheduling problem, we propose a polynomial-time optimal scheduling algorithm. For sum throughput maximization, we first derive the characteristics of an optimal schedule and then to avoid intractable complexity, we propose a polynomial-time heuristic algorithm which is illustrated to perform nearly optimal through numerical analysis.

The main challenge of ultra-reliable machine-to-machine (M2M) control applications is to meet the stringent timing and reliability requirements of control systems, despite the adverse properties of wireless communication for delay and packet errors, and limited battery resources of the sensor nodes. Since the transmission delay and energy consumption of a sensor node are determined by the transmission power and rate of that sensor node and the concurrently transmitting nodes, the transmission schedule should be optimized jointly with the transmission power and rate of the sensor nodes. Previously, it has been shown that the optimization of power control and rate adaptation for each node subset can be separately formulated, solved and then used in the scheduling algorithm in the optimal solution of the joint optimization of power control, rate adaptation and scheduling problem. However, the power control and rate adaptation problem has been only formulated and solved for continuous rate transmission model, in which Shannon's capacity formulation for an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) wireless channel is used in the calculation of the maximum achievable rate as a function of Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR). In this paper, we formulate the power control and rate adaptation problem with the objective of minimizing the time required for the concurrent transmission of a set of sensor nodes while satisfying their transmission delay, reliability and energy consumption requirements based on the more realistic discrete rate transmission model, in which only a finite set of transmit rates are supported. We propose a polynomial time algorithm to solve this problem and prove the optimality of the proposed algorithm. We then combine it with the previously proposed scheduling algorithms and demonstrate its close to optimal performance via extensive simulations.
