Satellite remote sensing missions have gained popularity over the past fifteen years due to their ability to cover large swaths of land at regular intervals, making them ideal for monitoring environmental trends. The FINCH mission, a 3U+ CubeSat equipped with a hyperspectral camera, aims to monitor crop residue cover in agricultural fields. Although hyperspectral imaging captures both spectral and spatial information, it is prone to various types of noise, including random noise, stripe noise, and dead pixels. Effective denoising of these images is crucial for downstream scientific tasks. Traditional methods, including hand-crafted techniques encoding strong priors, learned 2D image denoising methods applied across different hyperspectral bands, or diffusion generative models applied independently on bands, often struggle with varying noise strengths across spectral bands, leading to significant spectral distortion. This paper presents a novel approach to hyperspectral image denoising using latent diffusion models that integrate spatial and spectral information. We particularly do so by building a 3D diffusion model and presenting a 3-stage training approach on real and synthetically crafted datasets. The proposed method preserves image structure while reducing noise. Evaluations on both popular hyperspectral denoising datasets and synthetically crafted datasets for the FINCH mission demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Performance modeling is a key issue in queuing theory and operation research. It is well-known that the length of a queue that awaits service or the time spent by a job in a queue depends not only on the service rate, but also crucially on the fluctuations in service time. The larger the fluctuations, the longer the delay becomes and hence, this is a major hindrance for the queue to operate efficiently. Various strategies have been adapted to prevent this drawback. In this perspective, we investigate the effects of one such novel strategy namely resetting or restart, an emerging concept in statistical physics and stochastic complex process, that was recently introduced to mitigate fluctuations-induced delays in queues. In particular, we show that a service resetting mechanism accompanied with an overhead time can remarkably shorten the average queue lengths and waiting times. We examine various resetting strategies and further shed light on the intricate role of the overhead times to the queuing performance. Our analysis opens up future avenues in operation research where resetting-based strategies can be universally promising.

Recent advances in computer vision have led to significant progress in the generation of realistic image data, with denoising diffusion probabilistic models proving to be a particularly effective method. In this study, we demonstrate that diffusion models can effectively generate fully-annotated microscopy image data sets through an unsupervised and intuitive approach, using rough sketches of desired structures as the starting point. The proposed pipeline helps to reduce the reliance on manual annotations when training deep learning-based segmentation approaches and enables the segmentation of diverse datasets without the need for human annotations. This approach holds great promise in streamlining the data generation process and enabling a more efficient and scalable training of segmentation models, as we show in the example of different practical experiments involving various organisms and cell types.

Manually monitoring water quality is very exhausting and requires several hours of sampling and laboratory testing for a particular body of water. This article presents a solution to test water properties like electrical conductivity and pH with a remote-controlled floating vehicle that minimizes time intervals. An autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) has been designed mathematically and operated via MATLAB \& Simulink simulation where the Proportional integral derivative (PID) controller has been considered. A PVC model with Small waterplane area twin-hull (SWATH) technology is used to develop this vehicle. Manually collected data is compared to online sensors, suggesting a better solution for determining water properties such as dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), temperature, conductivity, total alkalinity, and bacteria. Preliminary computational results show the promising result, as Sungai Pasu rivers tested water falls in the safe range of pH (~6.8-7.14) using the developed ASV.

This work establishes a closed-form analysis for two-dimensional transient heat transfer in an absorber plate based on the thermal wave model when the collector starts to work. The method of separation of variables is employed to determine the exact thermal response during the starting of a solar collector. The thermal field is represented by 2-D thermal contours and 3-D surface plots to provide an accurate prediction compared to the 1-D analysis using the time-lag theory. An influence of Fourier number on the heat flow in the absorber plate is studied for different thermal relaxation times. The present analysis highlights that the magnitude of plate temperature depends significantly on the physical geometry. Differences in two models of heat propagation, viz. classical and thermal wave, in the absorber plate have an alteration in predicted collector performances. The present study also develops another design situation for heat transfer in the absorber plate when the collector shutdowns to the ambient state from its steady condition. Laplace Transform Method (LTM) in combination with the product solution method uses to determine the temperature with the initial condition represented as a steady case. Due to the lagging nature of thermal behavior, a significant difference between the classical and thermal wave models for the propagation of heat was observed, and also this study determines the exact time to be taken to reach the dead state for the complete shutdown of the collector.

Electrification of transport is a key strategy in reducing carbon emissions. Many countries have adopted policies of complete but gradual transformation to electric vehicles (EVs). However, mass EV adoption also means a spike in load (kW), which in turn can disrupt existing electricity infrastructure. Smart or controlled charging is widely seen as a potential solution to alleviate this stress on existing networks. Learning from the recent EV trials in the UK and elsewhere we take into account two key aspects which are largely ignored in current research: EVs actually charging at any given time and wide range of EV types, especially battery capacity-wise. Taking a minimalistic scenario-based approach, we study forecasting models for mean number of active chargers and mean EV consumption for distinct scenarios. Focusing on residential charging the models we consider range from simple regression models to more advanced machine and deep learning models such as XGBoost and LSTMs. We then use these models to evaluate the impacts of different levels of future EV penetration on a specimen distribution transformer that captures typical real-world scenarios. In doing so, we also initiate the study of different types of controlled charging when fully controlled charging is not possible. This aligns with the outcomes from recent trials which show that a sizeable proportion of EV owners may not prefer fully controlled centralized charging. We study two possible control regimes and show that one is more beneficial from load-on-transformer point of view, while the other may be preferred for other objectives. We show that a minimum of 60% control is required to ensure that transformers are not overloaded during peak hours.

In recent years, coronary artery disease is escalating and is likely to assume an epidemic proportion by 2030. Currently the reliable methods for detection of coronary arterial lesions are either conventional coronary angiogram (CAG) or MDCT (Multiple Detector Computed Tomography) coronary angiogram. Conventional CAG is an invasive procedure. Conventional CAG and CT (Computed Tomography) angiogram, both require expert supervision of either an interventional cardiologist or a radiologist. In this work, we have proposed a novel design and method for non-invasive detection and localization of coronary arterial lesion using Impedance Cardiography (ICG). The ICG signal recorded by the proposed device is used to extract feature points and compute augmentation index, amplitude and other time related parameters. The extracted features are used as input to a trained artificial neural network, for detection and prediction of coronary arterial lesions. The trained network generates specialized models, to be used for diagnosis of arterial lesions. The proposed methodology detects lesion in Left main coronary artery (LMCA), Left anterior descending artery (LAD), Diagonal branch, Left circumflex artery (LCX), and Right coronary artery (RCA) with an accuracy of 92%, 82%, 76%, 76%, 84% respectively. The proposed device could be also used by a common individual for detection of arterial lesion without any expert supervision, unassisted. The proposed algorithm eliminates the need of CAG for diagnosis of coronary arterial lesions (stenosis), and provides an insight into a new method for non-invasive monitoring of cardiovascular haemodynamics, detection and localization of coronary arterial lesion.

Brain computer interface based assistive technology are currently promoted for motor rehabilitation of the neuromuscular ailed individuals. Recent studies indicate a high potential of utilising electroencephalography (EEG) to extract motor related intentions. Limbic movement intentions are already exhaustively studied by the researchers with high accuracy rate. But, capturing movement of fingers from EEG is still in nascent stage. In this study, we have proposed an ensemble learning based approach for EEG in distinguishing between movements of different fingers, namely, thumb, index, and middle. Six healthy subjects participated in this study. Common spatial patterns (CSP) were extracted as features to classify with the extra tree or extremely randomized tree binary classifier. The average classification accuracy of decoding a finger from rest condition was found to be $74\%$, wheres in discriminating of movement of pair of fingers average accuracy was $60\%$. Furthermore, error correcting output coding (ECOC) was added to the binary classifier to use it in multiclass classification. The proposed algorithm achieved a maximum kappa value of 0.36 among the subjects.
