The Pampilhosa da Serra Space Observatory (PASO) is located in the center of the continental Portuguese territory, in the heart of a certified Dark Sky destination by the Starlight Foundation (Aldeias do Xisto) and has been an instrumental asset to advance science, education and astrotourism certifications. PASO hosts astronomy and Space Situational Awareness (SSA) activities including a node of the Portuguese Space Surveillance \& Tracking (SST) infrastructure network, such as a space radar currently in test phase using GEM radiotelescope, a double Wide Field of View Telescope system, a EUSST optical sensor telescope. These instruments allow surveillance of satellite and space debris in LEO, MEO and GEO orbits. The WFOV telescope offers spectroscopy capabilities enabling light curve analysis and cosmic sources monitoring. Instruments for Space Weather are being considered for installation to monitor solar activities and expand the range of SSA services.

Flexible-grid Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) have been widely deployed in recent years to support the growing demand for bandwidth-intensive applications. To address this cost-efficiently, optimized utilization of EONs is required. Next-generation bandwidth-variable transceivers (BVTs) will offer increased adaptivity in symbol rate as well as modulation through probabilistic constellation sha**. In this work, we therefore investigate the impact of increased configuration granularity on various aspects of optical networks. We account for practical implementation considerations of BVT configurations for the estimation of the required signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, an optimization algorithm is presented that selects the most efficient configuration for each considered data rate and bandwidth combination. Based on the advanced transceiver configurations, we conduct a network planning study using a physical-layer-aware algorithm for flexible-grid EONs, and present results for a national and a continental optical backbone network topology. Our research demonstrates that a rise in modulation rate adaptivity results in substantial savings in resources, decreasing the number of necessary lightpaths by as much as 20% in EONs. In contrast, increased symbol rate granularity only results in minor savings.

Deep learning applications for assessing medical images are limited because the datasets are often small and imbalanced. The use of synthetic data has been proposed in the literature, but neither a robust comparison of the different methods nor generalizability has been reported. Our approach integrates a retinal image quality assessment model and StyleGAN2 architecture to enhance Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) detection capabilities and improve generalizability. This work compares ten different Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) architectures to generate synthetic eye-fundus images with and without AMD. We combined subsets of three public databases (iChallenge-AMD, ODIR-2019, and RIADD) to form a single training and test set. We employed the STARE dataset for external validation, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of the proposed approach. The results show that StyleGAN2 reached the lowest Frechet Inception Distance (166.17), and clinicians could not accurately differentiate between real and synthetic images. ResNet-18 architecture obtained the best performance with 85% accuracy and outperformed the two human experts (80% and 75%) in detecting AMD fundus images. The accuracy rates were 82.8% for the test set and 81.3% for the STARE dataset, demonstrating the model's generalizability. The proposed methodology for synthetic medical image generation has been validated for robustness and accuracy, with free access to its code for further research and development in this field.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders that can be diagnosed through electroencephalogram (EEG), in which the following epileptic events can be observed: pre-ictal, ictal, post-ictal, and interictal. In this paper, we present a novel method for epilepsy detection into two differentiation contexts: binary and multiclass classification. For feature extraction, a total of 105 measures were extracted from power spectrum, spectrogram, and bispectrogram. For classifier building, eight different machine learning algorithms were used. Our method was applied in a widely used EEG database. As a result, random forest and backpropagation based on multilayer perceptron algorithms reached the highest accuracy for binary (98.75%) and multiclass (96.25%) classification problems, respectively. Subsequently, the statistical tests did not find a model that would achieve a better performance than the other classifiers. In the evaluation based on confusion matrices, it was also not possible to identify a classifier that stands out in relation to other models for EEG classification. Even so, our results are promising and competitive with the findings in the literature.
