In this paper, a novel online, output-feedback, critic-only, model-based reinforcement learning framework is developed for safety-critical control systems operating in complex environments. The developed framework ensures system stability and safety, regardless of the lack of full-state measurement, while learning and implementing an optimal controller. The approach leverages linear matrix inequality-based observer design method to efficiently search for observer gains for effective state estimation. Then, approximate dynamic programming is used to develop an approximate controller that uses simulated experiences to guarantee the safety and stability of the closed-loop system. Safety is enforced by adding a recentered robust Lyapunov-like barrier function to the cost function that effectively enforces safety constraints, even in the presence of uncertainty in the state. Lyapunov-based stability analysis is used to guarantee uniform ultimate boundedness of the trajectories of the closed-loop system and ensure safety. Simulation studies are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed method through two real-world safety-critical scenarios, ensuring that the state trajectories of a given system remain in a given set and obstacle avoidance.

Decentralized strategies are of interest for learning from large-scale data over networks. This paper studies learning over a network of geographically distributed nodes/agents subject to quantization. Each node possesses a private local cost function, collectively contributing to a global cost function, which the proposed methodology aims to minimize. In contrast to many existing literature, the information exchange among nodes is quantized. We adopt a first-order computationally-efficient distributed optimization algorithm (with no extra inner consensus loop) that leverages node-level gradient correction based on local data and network-level gradient aggregation only over nearby nodes. This method only requires balanced networks with no need for stochastic weight design. It can handle log-scale quantized data exchange over possibly time-varying and switching network setups. We analyze convergence over both structured networks (for example, training over data-centers) and ad-hoc multi-agent networks (for example, training over dynamic robotic networks). Through analysis and experimental validation, we show that (i) structured networks generally result in a smaller optimality gap, and (ii) logarithmic quantization leads to smaller optimality gap compared to uniform quantization.

Using distance estimates, an infinite horizon optimal regulation problem is solved, which aims to regulate the camera to a goal location while maximizing feature observability. Lyapunov-based stability analysis is used to guarantee exponential convergence of depth estimates and input-to-state stability of the goal location relative to the camera. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified in simulation, and a table illustrating improved observability is provided.

Industry 5.0 vision, a step toward the next industrial revolution and enhancement to Industry 4.0, envisioned the new goals of resilient, sustainable, and human-centric approaches in diverse emerging applications, e.g., factories-of-the-future, digital society. The vision seeks to leverage human intelligence and creativity in nexus with intelligent, efficient, and reliable cognitive collaborating robots (cobots) to achieve zero waste, zerodefect, and mass customization-based manufacturing solutions. However, the vision requires the merging of cyber-physical worlds through utilizing Industry 5.0 technological enablers, e.g., cognitive cobots, person-centric artificial intelligence (AI), cyberphysical systems, digital twins, hyperconverged data storage and computing, communication infrastructure, and others. In this regard, the convergence of the emerging computational intelligence (CI) paradigm and next-generation wireless networks (NGWNs) can fulfill the stringent communication and computation requirements of the technological enablers in the Industry 5.0 vision, which is the aim of this survey-based tutorial. In this article, we address this issue by reviewing and analyzing current emerging concepts and technologies, e.g., CI tools and frameworks, network-in-box architecture, open radio access networks, softwarized service architectures, potential enabling services, and others, essential for designing the objectives of CINGWNs to fulfill the Industry 5.0 vision requirements. Finally, we provide a list of lessons learned from our detailed review, research challenges, and open issues that should be addressed in CI-NGWNs to realize Industry 5.0.

In this article, we present our vision of preamble detection in a physical random access channel for next-generation (Next-G) networks using machine learning techniques. Preamble detection is performed to maintain communication and synchronization between devices of the Internet of Everything (IoE) and next-generation nodes. Considering the scalability and traffic density, Next-G networks have to deal with preambles corrupted by noise due to channel characteristics or environmental constraints. We show that when injecting 15% random noise, the detection performance degrades to 48%. We propose an informative instance-based fusion network (IIFNet) to cope with random noise and to improve detection performance, simultaneously. A novel sampling strategy for selecting informative instances from feature spaces has also been explored to improve detection performance. The proposed IIFNet is tested on a real dataset for preamble detection that was collected with the help of a reputable commercial company.

Deep learning based single image super resolution (SISR) algorithms has revolutionized the overall diagnosis framework by continually improving the architectural components and training strategies associated with convolutional neural networks (CNN) on low-resolution images. However, existing work lacks in two ways: i) the SR output produced exhibits poor texture details, and often produce blurred edges, ii) most of the models have been developed for a single modality, hence, require modification to adapt to a new one. This work addresses (i) by proposing generative adversarial network (GAN) with deep multi-attention modules to learn high-frequency information from low-frequency data. Existing approaches based on the GAN have yielded good SR results; however, the texture details of their SR output have been experimentally confirmed to be deficient for medical images particularly. The integration of wavelet transform (WT) and GANs in our proposed SR model addresses the aforementioned limitation concerning textons. While the WT divides the LR image into multiple frequency bands, the transferred GAN uses multi-attention and upsample blocks to predict high-frequency components. Additionally, we present a learning method for training domain-specific classifiers as perceptual loss functions. Using a combination of multi-attention GAN loss and a perceptual loss function results in an efficient and reliable performance. Applying the same model for medical images from diverse modalities is challenging, our work addresses (ii) by training and performing on several modalities via transfer learning. Using two medical datasets, we validate our proposed SR network against existing state-of-the-art approaches and achieve promising results in terms of SSIM and PSNR.

In this worldwide spread of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection, it is of utmost importance to detect the disease at an early stage especially in the hot spots of this epidemic. There are more than 110 Million infected cases on the globe, sofar. Due to its promptness and effective results computed tomography (CT)-scan image is preferred to the reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Early detection and isolation of the patient is the only possible way of controlling the spread of the disease. Automated analysis of CT-Scans can provide enormous support in this process. In this article, We propose a novel approach to detect SARS-CoV-2 using CT-scan images. Our method is based on a very intuitive and natural idea of analyzing shapes, an attempt to mimic a professional medic. We mainly trace SARS-CoV-2 features by quantifying their topological properties. We primarily use a tool called persistent homology, from Topological Data Analysis (TDA), to compute these topological properties. We train and test our model on the "SARS-CoV-2 CT-scan dataset" \citep{soares2020sars}, an open-source dataset, containing 2,481 CT-scans of normal and COVID-19 patients. Our model yielded an overall benchmark F1 score of $99.42\% $, accuracy $99.416\%$, precision $99.41\%$, and recall $99.42\%$. The TDA techniques have great potential that can be utilized for efficient and prompt detection of COVID-19. The immense potential of TDA may be exploited in clinics for rapid and safe detection of COVID-19 globally, in particular in the low and middle-income countries where RT-PCR labs and/or kits are in a serious crisis.

Retaining spatial characteristics of panchromatic image and spectral information of multispectral bands is a critical issue in pansharpening. This paper proposes a pyramid based deep fusion framework that preserves spectral and spatial characteristics at different scales. The spectral information is preserved by passing the corresponding low resolution multispectral image as residual component of the network at each scale. The spatial information is preserved by training the network at each scale with the high frequencies of panchromatic image alongside the corresponding low resolution multispectral image. The parameters of different networks are shared across the pyramid in order to add spatial details consistently across scales. The parameters are also shared across fusion layers within a network at a specific scale. Experiments suggest that the proposed architecture outperforms state of the art pansharpening models. The proposed model, code and dataset is publicly available at https://github.com/sohaibali01/deep_pyramid_fusion.

The energy generation of a run of river hydropower plant depends upon the flow of river and the variations in the water flow makes the energy production unreliable. This problem is usually solved by constructing a small pond in front of the run of river hydropower plant. However, changes in water level of conventional single pond model results in sags, surges and unpredictable power fluctuations. This work proposes three pond model instead of traditional single pond model. The volume of water in three ponds is volumetrically equivalent to the traditional single pond but it reduces the dependency of the run of river power plant on the flow of river. Moreover, three pond model absorbs the water surges and disturbances more efficiently. The three pond system, modeled as non-linear hydraulic three tank system, is being applied with fuzzy inference system and standard PID based methods for smooth and efficient level regulation. The results of fuzzy inference system are across-the-board improved in terms of regulation and disturbances handling as compared to conventional PID controller.

In this paper, we propose Push-SAGA, a decentralized stochastic first-order method for finite-sum minimization over a directed network of nodes. Push-SAGA combines node-level variance reduction to remove the uncertainty caused by stochastic gradients, network-level gradient tracking to address the distributed nature of the data, and push-sum consensus to tackle the challenge of directed communication links. We show that Push-SAGA achieves linear convergence to the exact solution for smooth and strongly convex problems and is thus the first linearly-convergent stochastic algorithm over arbitrary strongly connected directed graphs. We also characterize the regimes in which Push-SAGA achieves a linear speed-up compared to its centralized counterpart and achieves a network-independent convergence rate. We illustrate the behavior and convergence properties of Push-SAGA with the help of numerical experiments on strongly convex and non-convex problems.

In this report, we study decentralized stochastic optimization to minimize a sum of smooth and strongly convex cost functions when the functions are distributed over a directed network of nodes. In contrast to the existing work, we use gradient tracking to improve certain aspects of the resulting algorithm. In particular, we propose the~\textbf{\texttt{S-ADDOPT}} algorithm that assumes a stochastic first-order oracle at each node and show that for a constant step-size~$α$, each node converges linearly inside an error ball around the optimal solution, the size of which is controlled by~$α$. For decaying step-sizes~$\mathcal{O}(1/k)$, we show that~\textbf{\texttt{S-ADDOPT}} reaches the exact solution sublinearly at~$\mathcal{O}(1/k)$ and its convergence is asymptotically network-independent. Thus the asymptotic behavior of~\textbf{\texttt{S-ADDOPT}} is comparable to the centralized stochastic gradient descent. Numerical experiments over both strongly convex and non-convex problems illustrate the convergence behavior and the performance comparison of the proposed algorithm.

These industries include power generation and supply, gas and oil production and delivery, water and waste management, telecommunication and transport facilities. The integration of internet exposes these systems to cyber threats. The consequences of compromised ICN are determine for a country economic and functional sustainability. Therefore, enforcing security and ensuring correctness operation became one of the biggest concerns for Industrial Control Systems (ICS), and need to be addressed. In this paper, we propose an anomaly detection approach for ICN using the physical properties of the system. We have developed operational baseline of electricity generation process and reduced the feature set using greedy and genetic feature selection algorithms. The classification is done based on Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), and C4.5 decision tree with the help from the inter-arrival curves. The results show that the proposed approach successfully detects anomalies with a high degree of accuracy. In addition, they proved that SVM and C4.5 produces accurate results even for high sensitivity attacks when they used with the inter-arrival curves. As compared to this, k-NN is unable to produce good results for low and medium sensitivity attacks test cases.

Energy harvesting technology is a possible appealing solution for ultimately prolonging the lifetime of devices and networks. Although considerable research efforts have been conducted in the context of using energy harvesting technology in 5G wireless networks, these efforts are in their infancy, and a tutorial on this topic is still lacking. This study aims to discuss the beneficial role of energy harvesting technology in 5G networks. We categorize and classify the literature available on energy harvesting in 5G networks by devising a taxonomy based on energy sources; energy harvesting devices, phases, and models; energy conversion methods, and energy propagation medium. The key requirements for enabling energy harvesting in 5G networks are also outlined. Several core research challenges that remain to be addressed are discussed. Lebesgue sampling is based on collecting information depending on the values of the signal. Although the interpolation methods for periodic sampling have been a topic of research for a long time, there is a lack of study in methods capable of taking advantage of the Lebesgue sampling characteristics to reconstruct time series more accurately. Indeed, Lebesgue sampling contains additional information about the shape of the signal in-between two sampled points. Using this information would allow us to generate an interpolated signal closer to the original one. That is to say, the average distance between the interpolated signal and the original signal will be smaller than a signal interpolated with other interpolation methods. In this paper, we propose two novel time series interpolation methods specifically designed for Lebesgue sampling called ZeLiC and ZeChipC. ZeLiC is an algorithm that combines both Zero-order hold interpolation and Linear interpolation to reconstruct time series. ZeChipC is a similar idea, it is a combination of Zero-order hold and PCHIP interpolation. Zero-order hold interpolation is favourable for interpolating abrupt changes while Linear and PCHIP interpolation are more suitable for smooth transitions. In order to apply one method or the other, we have introduced a new concept called tolerated region. ZeLiC and ZeChipC include a new functionality to adapt the reconstructed signal to concave/convex regions. The proposed methods have been compared with the state-of-the-art interpolation methods using Lebesgue sampling and have offered higher average performance. Additionally, we have compared the performance of the methods using both Riemann and Lebesgue sampling using an approximate number of sampled points. The performance of the combination "Lebesgue sampling with ZeChipC interpolation method" is clearly much better than any other combination.

In addition to the reconstruction limitations, many registration algorithms under perform in the presence of the rapid intensity changes. In this paper, we propose a novel motion correction method that reconstructs the motion free image series from the undersampled cardiac perfusion MR data. The motion correction method uses the novel robust principal component analysis based reconstruction along with the periodic decomposition to separate the respiratory motion component that can be registered, from the contrast intensity variations. It is tested on simulated data and the clinically acquired data. The performance of the method is qualitatively assessed and compared with the existing motion correction methods. Respiratory motion can cause strong blurring artifacts in the reconstructed image during MR acquisition. These artifacts become more prominent when use in the presence of undersampled data. Recently, compressed sensing (CS) is developed as an MR reconstruction technique, to recover good quality images from the compressive k-space samples. To maximize the benefits of CS in free breathing data, it is understandable to use CS with the motion corrected images. In this paper, we have developed a new CS based motion corrected image reconstruction technique. In this two-stage technique, we use similarity measure to sort the motion corrupted data into different respiratory states. Then, we use a new reconstruction algorithm, which iteratively performs reconstruction and motion correction. The performance of the proposed method is qualitatively and quantitively evaluated using simulated data and clinical data. Results depict that this method performs the better reconstruction of respiratory motion corrected cardiac cine images as compared to the CS based reconstruction method.
