This paper addresses the issue of power flow control for partially faulty microgrids. In microgrid control systems, faults may occur in both electrical and communication layers. This may have severe effects on the operation of microgrids. In addition, disturbances always coexist with faults in microgrids, which may further deteriorate system performance. To address the faults and disturbances simultaneously, a model predictive control (MPC) method based on set-membership estimation (SME) that transmits information via a communication network is proposed. When electrical devices are nonfunctional or communication failures occur, the corresponding system states will become unavailable. To this end, the SME method is employed to estimate the states with the existence of unknown-but-bounded process and measurement disturbances. The networked MPC method is designed to schedule the power dispatch by using the forecasts of photovoltaic (PV) generation and load demand. With these two methods, the fault-tolerant control can be achieved. Further, a deviation compensation method is proposed to compensate for the forecast errors. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is demonstrated through wireless communication tests using Raspberry Pis.

This paper investigates the communication strategy for second-order multi-agent systems with nonlinear dynamics. To save the scarce resources of communication channels, a novel event-triggered communication mechanism is designed without using continuous signals among the followers. To get rid of the centralized information depending on the spectrum of the Laplacian matrix, a consensus protocol with updated coupling gains and an event-triggered strategy of interagent communication with updated thresholds are presented. To minimize the impacts of noise, only relative positions among agents are employed in the protocol. With the proposed event-triggered mechanism and the control protocol, the leader-following consensus of MASs and no Zeno behavior included are mathematically proven. The results are verified through numerical examples.

A new hybrid visual servoing adaptive tracking controller and three adaptive laws are proposed to guarantee harvesting robots to finish the dynamic harvesting task and the adaption to unknown parameters including camera intrinsic and extrinsic model and robot dynamics. By the Lyapunov theory, asymptotic convergence of the closed-loop system with the proposed control scheme is rigorously proven. The number of daily sUAS operations in uncontrolled low altitude airspace is expected to reach into the millions in a few years. Therefore, UAS density prediction has become an emerging and challenging problem. In this paper, a deep learning-based UAS instantaneous density prediction model is presented. The model takes two types of data as input: 1) the historical density generated from the historical data, and 2) the future sUAS mission information. The architecture of our model contains four components: Historical Density Formulation module, UAS Mission Translation module, Mission Feature Extraction module, and Density Map Projection module. The training and testing data are generated by a python based simulator which is inspired by the multi-agent air traffic resource usage simulator (MATRUS) framework. The quality of prediction is measured by the correlation score and the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristics (AUROC) between the predicted value and simulated value. The experimental results demonstrate outstanding performance of the deep learning-based UAS density predictor. Compared to the baseline models, for simplified traffic scenario where no-fly zones and safe distance among sUASs are not considered, our model improves the prediction accuracy by more than 15.2% and its correlation score reaches 0.947. In a more realistic scenario, where the no-fly zone avoidance and the safe distance among sUASs are maintained using A* routing algorithm, our model can still achieve 0.823 correlation score. Meanwhile, the AUROC can reach 0.951 for the hot spot prediction.

Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) will be an important component of the smart city and intelligent transportation environments of the near future. The demand for sUAS related applications, such as commercial delivery and land surveying, is expected to grow rapidly in next few years. In general, sUAS traffic routing and management functions are needed to coordinate the launching of sUAS from different launch sites and determine their trajectories to avoid conflict while considering several other constraints such as expected arrival time, minimum flight energy, and availability of communication resources. However, as the airborne sUAS density grows in a certain area, it is difficult to foresee the potential airspace and communications resource conflicts and make immediate decisions to avoid them. To address this challenge, we present a temporal and spatial routing algorithm and simulation platform for sUAS trajectory management in a high density urban area that plans sUAS movements in a spatial and temporal maze taking into account obstacles that are either static or dynamic in time. The routing allows the sUAS to avoid static no-fly areas (i.e. static obstacles) or other in-flight sUAS and areas that have congested communication resources (i.e. dynamic obstacles). The algorithm is evaluated using an agent-based simulation platform. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other route management algorithms in many areas, especially in processing speed and memory efficiency. Detailed comparisons are provided for the sUAS flight time, the overall throughput, conflict rate and communication resource utilization. The results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can be used to address the airspace and communication resource utilization needs for a next generation smart city and smart transportation.

While generative adversarial networks (GANs) have revolutionized machine learning, a number of open questions remain to fully understand them and exploit their power. One of these questions is how to efficiently achieve proper diversity and sampling of the multi-mode data space. To address this, we introduce BasisGAN, a stochastic conditional multi-mode image generator. By exploiting the observation that a convolutional filter can be well approximated as a linear combination of a small set of basis elements, we learn a plug-and-played basis generator to stochastically generate basis elements, with just a few hundred of parameters, to fully embed stochasticity into convolutional filters. By sampling basis elements instead of filters, we dramatically reduce the cost of modeling the parameter space with no sacrifice on either image diversity or fidelity. To illustrate this proposed plug-and-play framework, we construct variants of BasisGAN based on state-of-the-art conditional image generation networks, and train the networks by simply plugging in a basis generator, without additional auxiliary components, hyperparameters, or training objectives. The experimental success is complemented with theoretical results indicating how the perturbations introduced by the proposed sampling of basis elements can propagate to the appearance of generated images.

A robust single-shot 3D shape reconstruction technique integrating the fringe projection profilometry (FPP) technique with the deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is proposed in this letter. The input of the proposed technique is a single FPP image, and the training and validation data sets are prepared by using the conventional multi-frequency FPP technique. Unlike the conventional 3D shape reconstruction methods which involve complex algorithms and intensive computation, the proposed approach uses an end-to-end network architecture to directly carry out the transformation of a 2D images to its corresponding 3D shape. Experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the validity and robustness of the proposed technique. It is capable of satisfying various 3D shape reconstruction demands in scientific research and engineering applications.

The number of daily small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) operations in uncontrolled low altitude airspace is expected to reach into the millions. UAS Traffic Management (UTM) is an emerging concept aiming at the safe and efficient management of such very dense traffic, but few studies are addressing the policies to accommodate such demand and the required ground infrastructure in suburban or urban environments. Searching for the optimal air traffic management policy is a combinatorial optimization problem with intractable complexity when the number of sUAS and the constraints increases. As the demands on the airspace increase and traffic patterns get complicated, it is difficult to forecast the potential low altitude airspace hotspots and the corresponding ground resource requirements. This work presents a Multi-agent Air Traffic and Resource Usage Simulation (MATRUS) framework that aims for fast evaluation of different air traffic management policies and the relationship between policy, environment and resulting traffic patterns. It can also be used as a tool to decide the resource distribution and launch site location in the planning of a next-generation smart city. As a case study, detailed comparisons are provided for the sUAS flight time, conflict ratio, cellular communication resource usage, for a managed (centrally coordinated) and unmanaged (free flight) traffic scenario.

Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) are becoming increasingly important for time series-related applications which require efficient and real-time implementations. The two major types are Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) networks. It is a challenging task to have real-time, efficient, and accurate hardware RNN implementations because of the high sensitivity to imprecision accumulation and the requirement of special activation function implementations.
A key limitation of the prior works is the lack of a systematic design optimization framework of RNN model and hardware implementations, especially when the block size (or compression ratio) should be jointly optimized with RNN type, layer size, etc. In this paper, we adopt the block-circulant matrix-based framework, and present the Efficient RNN (E-RNN) framework for FPGA implementations of the Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) application. The overall goal is to improve performance/energy efficiency under accuracy requirement. We use the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) technique for more accurate block-circulant training, and present two design explorations providing guidance on block size and reducing RNN training trials. Based on the two observations, we decompose E-RNN in two phases: Phase I on determining RNN model to reduce computation and storage subject to accuracy requirement, and Phase II on hardware implementations given RNN model, including processing element design/optimization, quantization, activation implementation, etc. Experimental results on actual FPGA deployments show that E-RNN achieves a maximum energy efficiency improvement of 37.4$\times$ compared with ESE, and more than 2$\times$ compared with C-LSTM, under the same accuracy.
