This paper considers near-field multiuser communications based on sparse arrays (SAs). First, for the uniform SAs (USAs), we analyze the beam gains of channel steering vectors, which shows that increasing the antenna spacings can effectively improve the spatial resolution of the antenna arrays to enhance the sum rate of multiuser communications. Then, we investigate nonuniform SAs (NSAs) to mitigate the high multiuser interference from the grating lobes of the USAs. To maximize the sum rate of near-field multiuser communications, we optimize the antenna positions of the NSAs, where a successive convex approximation-based antenna position optimization algorithm is proposed. Moreover, we find that the channels of both the USAs and the NSAs show uniform sparsity in the defined surrogate distance-angle (SD-A) domain. Based on the channel sparsity, an on-grid SD-A-domain orthogonal matching pursuit (SDA-OMP) algorithm is developed to estimate multiuser channels. To further improve the resolution of the SDA-OMP, we also design an off-grid SD-A-domain iterative super-resolution channel estimation algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed methods.

Micro-expressions are nonverbal facial expressions that reveal the covert emotions of individuals, making the micro-expression recognition task receive widespread attention. However, the micro-expression recognition task is challenging due to the subtle facial motion and brevity in duration. Many 2D image-based methods have been developed in recent years to recognize MEs effectively, but, these approaches are restricted by facial texture information and are susceptible to environmental factors, such as lighting. Conversely, depth information can effectively represent motion information related to facial structure changes and is not affected by lighting. Motion information derived from facial structures can describe motion features that pixel textures cannot delineate. We proposed a network for micro-expression recognition based on facial depth information, and our experiments have demonstrated the crucial role of depth maps in the micro-expression recognition task. Initially, we transform the depth map into a point cloud and obtain the motion information for each point by aligning the initiating frame with the apex frame and performing a differential operation. Subsequently, we adjusted all point cloud motion feature input dimensions and used them as inputs for multiple point cloud networks to assess the efficacy of this representation. PointNet++ was chosen as the ultimate outcome for micro-expression recognition due to its superior performance. Our experiments show that our proposed method significantly outperforms the existing deep learning methods, including the baseline, on the $CAS(ME)^3$ dataset, which includes depth information.

For the guidance information, we employ PLD algorithm to pre-process dual-microphone spectrum, and feed the output into subsequent deep neural network, which utilizes a lightweight U-Net with our proposed gated convolution augmented frequency attention (GCAFA) module to extract desired clean speech. This paper investigates beam training for extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output systems. By considering both the near field and far field, a triple-refined hybrid-field beam training scheme is proposed, where high-accuracy estimates of channel parameters are obtained through three steps of progressive beam refinement. First, the hybrid-field beam gain (HFBG)-based first refinement method is developed. Based on the analysis of the HFBG, the first-refinement codebook is designed and the beam training is performed accordingly to narrow down the potential region of the channel path. Then, the maximum likelihood (ML)-based and principle of stationary phase (PSP)-based second refinement methods are developed. By exploiting the measurements of the beam training, the ML is used to estimate the channel parameters. To avoid the high computational complexity of ML, closed-form estimates of the channel parameters are derived according to the PSP. Moreover, the Gaussian approximation (GA)-based third refinement method is developed. The hybrid-field neighboring search is first performed to identify the potential region of the main lobe of the channel steering vector. Afterwards, by applying the GA, a least-squares estimator is developed to obtain the high-accuracy channel parameter estimation. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

The radio map, serving as a visual representation of electromagnetic spatial characteristics, plays a pivotal role in assessment of wireless communication networks and radio monitoring coverage. Addressing the issue of low accuracy existing in the current radio map construction, this paper presents a novel radio map construction method based on generative adversarial network (GAN) in which the Aggregated Contextual-Transformation (AOT) block, Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM), and Transposed Convolution (T-Conv) block are applied to the generator, and we name it as ACT-GAN. It significantly improves the reconstruction accuracy and local texture of the radio maps. The performance of ACT-GAN across three different scenarios is demonstrated. Experiment results reveal that in the scenario without sparse discrete observations, the proposed method reduces the root mean square error (RMSE) by 14.6% in comparison to the state-of-the-art models. In the scenario with sparse discrete observations, the RMSE is diminished by 13.2%. Furthermore, the predictive results of the proposed model show a more lucid representation of electromagnetic spatial field distribution. To verify the universality of this model in radio map construction tasks, the scenario of unknown radio emission source is investigated. The results indicate that the proposed model is robust radio map construction and accurate in predicting the location of the emission source.

Multiuser beamforming is considered for partially-connected millimeter wave massive MIMO systems. Based on perfect channel state information (CSI), a low-complexity hybrid beamforming scheme that decouples the analog beamformer and the digital beamformer is proposed to maximize the sum-rate. The analog beamformer design is modeled as a phase alignment problem to harvest the array gain. Given the analog beamformer, the digital beamformer is designed by solving a weighted minimum mean squared error problem. Then based on imperfect CSI, an analog-only beamformer design scheme is proposed, where the design problem aims at maximizing the desired signal power on the current user and minimizing the power on the other users to mitigate the multiuser interference. The original problem is then transformed into a series of independent beam nulling subproblems, where an efficient iterative algorithm using the majorization-minimization framework is proposed to solve the subproblems. Simulation results show that, under perfect CSI, the proposed scheme achieves almost the same sum-rate performance as the existing schemes but with lower computational complexity; and under imperfect CSI, the proposed analog-only beamforming design scheme can effectively mitigate the multiuser interference.

In this paper, beam training and beam tracking are investigated for extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output communication systems with partially-connected hybrid combining structures. Firstly, we propose a two-stage hybrid-field beam training scheme for both the near field and the far field. In the first stage, each subarray independently uses multiple far-field channel steering vectors to approximate near-field ones for analog combining. To find the codeword best fitting for the channel, digital combiners in the second stage are designed to combine the outputs of the analog combiners from the first stage. Then, based on the principle of stationary phase and the time-frequency duality, the expressions of subarray signals after analog combining are analytically derived and a beam refinement based on phase shifts of subarrays~(BRPSS) scheme with closed-form solutions is proposed for high-resolution channel parameter estimation. Moreover, a low-complexity near-field beam tracking scheme is developed, where the kinematic model is adopted to characterize the channel variations and the extended Kalman filter is exploited for beam tracking. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

This paper investigates an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system with reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Our simultaneous beam training and target sensing (SBTTS) scheme enables the base station to perform beam training with the user terminals (UTs) and the RIS, and simultaneously to sense the targets. Based on our findings, the energy of the echoes from the RIS is accumulated in the angle-delay domain while that from the targets is accumulated in the Doppler-delay domain. The SBTTS scheme can distinguish the RIS from the targets with the mixed echoes from the RIS and the targets. Then we propose a positioning and array orientation estimation (PAOE) scheme for both the line-of-sight channels and the non-line-of-sight channels based on the beam training results of SBTTS by develo** a low-complexity two-dimensional fast search algorithm. Based on the SBTTS and PAOE schemes, we further compute the angle-of-arrival and angle-of-departure for the channels between the RIS and the UTs by exploiting the geometry relationship to accomplish the beam alignment of the ISAC system. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) have become appealing resolutions for seamless coverage in the next-generation wireless transmission, where a large number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices diversely distributed can be efficiently served. The explosively growing number of IoT devices brings a new challenge for massive connection. The long-distance wireless signal propagation in NTNs leads to severe path loss and large latency, where the accurate acquisition of channel state information (CSI) is another challenge, especially for fast-moving non-terrestrial base stations (NTBSs). Moreover, the scarcity of on-board resources of NTBSs is also a challenge for resource allocation. To this end, we investigate three key issues, where the existing schemes and emerging resolutions for these three key issues have been comprehensively presented. The first issue is to enable the massive connection by designing random access to establish the wireless link and multiple access to transmit data streams. The second issue is to accurately acquire CSI in various channel conditions by channel estimation and beam training, where orthogonal time frequency space modulation and dynamic codebooks are on focus. The third issue is to efficiently allocate the wireless resources, including power allocation, spectrum sharing, beam hop**, and beamforming. At the end of this article, some future research topics are identified.

The segmentation of kidney layer structures, including cortex, outer stripe, inner stripe, and inner medulla within human kidney whole slide images (WSI) plays an essential role in automated image analysis in renal pathology. However, the current manual segmentation process proves labor-intensive and infeasible for handling the extensive digital pathology images encountered at a large scale. In response, the realm of digital renal pathology has seen the emergence of deep learning-based methodologies. However, very few, if any, deep learning based approaches have been applied to kidney layer structure segmentation. Addressing this gap, this paper assesses the feasibility of performing deep learning based approaches on kidney layer structure segmetnation. This study employs the representative convolutional neural network (CNN) and Transformer segmentation approaches, including Swin-Unet, Medical-Transformer, TransUNet, U-Net, PSPNet, and DeepLabv3+. We quantitatively evaluated six prevalent deep learning models on renal cortex layer segmentation using mice kidney WSIs. The empirical results stemming from our approach exhibit compelling advancements, as evidenced by a decent Mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) index. The results demonstrate that Transformer models generally outperform CNN-based models. By enabling a quantitative evaluation of renal cortical structures, deep learning approaches are promising to empower these medical professionals to make more informed kidney layer segmentation.

Contemporary image rescaling aims at embedding a high-resolution (HR) image into a low-resolution (LR) thumbnail image that contains embedded information for HR image reconstruction. Unlike traditional image super-resolution, this enables high-fidelity HR image restoration faithful to the original one, given the embedded information in the LR thumbnail. However, state-of-the-art image rescaling methods do not optimize the LR image file size for efficient sharing and fall short of real-time performance for ultra-high-resolution (e.g., 6K) image reconstruction. To address these two challenges, we propose a novel framework (HyperThumbnail) for real-time 6K rate-distortion-aware image rescaling. Our framework first embeds an HR image into a JPEG LR thumbnail by an encoder with our proposed quantization prediction module, which minimizes the file size of the embedding LR JPEG thumbnail while maximizing HR reconstruction quality. Then, an efficient frequency-aware decoder reconstructs a high-fidelity HR image from the LR one in real time. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework outperforms previous image rescaling baselines in rate-distortion performance and can perform 6K image reconstruction in real time.

In this paper, a convolutional sparse coding method based on global structure characteristics and spectral correlation is proposed for the reconstruction of compressive spectral images. The spectral data is regarded as the convolution sum of the convolution kernel and the corresponding coefficients, using the convolution kernel operates the global image information, preserving the structure information of the spectral image in the spatial dimension. To take full exploration of the constraints between spectra, the coefficients corresponding to the convolution kernel are constrained by the L_(2,1)norm to improve spectral accuracy. And, to solve the problem that convolutional sparse coding is insensitive to low frequency, the global total-variation (TV) constraint is added to estimate the low-frequency components. It not only ensures the effective estimation of the low-frequency but also transforms the convolutional sparse coding into a de-noising process, which makes the reconstructing process simpler. Simulations show that compared with the current mainstream optimization methods, the proposed method can improve the reconstruction quality by up to 4 dB in PSNR and 10% in SSIM, and has a great improvement in the details of the reconstructed image.

A variable-phase-shifter (VPS) architecture with hybrid precoding for mixture use of phase shifters and switches, is proposed for millimeter wave massive multiple-input multiple-output communications. For the VPS architecture, a hybrid precoding design (HPD) scheme, called VPS-HPD, is proposed to optimize the phases according to the channel state information by alternately optimizing the analog precoder and digital precoder. To reduce the computational complexity of the VPS-HPD scheme, a low-complexity HPD scheme for the VPS architecture (VPS-LC-HPD) including alternating optimization in three stages is then proposed, where each stage has a closed-form solution and can be efficiently implemented. To reduce the hardware complexity introduced by the large number of switches, we consider a group-connected VPS architecture and propose a HPD scheme, where the HPD problem is divided into multiple independent subproblems with each subproblem flexibly solved by the VPS-HPD or VPS-LC-HPD scheme. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the propose schemes and show that the proposed schemes can achieve satisfactory spectral efficiency performance with reduced computational complexity or hardware complexity.

Lidars are depth measuring sensors widely used in autonomous driving and augmented reality. However, the large volume of data produced by lidars can lead to high costs in data storage and transmission. While lidar data can be represented as two interchangeable representations: 3D point clouds and range images, most previous work focus on compressing the generic 3D point clouds. In this work, we show that directly compressing the range images can leverage the lidar scanning pattern, compared to compressing the unprojected point clouds. We propose a novel data-driven range image compression algorithm, named RIDDLE (Range Image Deep DeLta Encoding). At its core is a deep model that predicts the next pixel value in a raster scanning order, based on contextual laser shots from both the current and past scans (represented as a 4D point cloud of spherical coordinates and time). The deltas between predictions and original values can then be compressed by entropy encoding. Evaluated on the Waymo Open Dataset and KITTI, our method demonstrates significant improvement in the compression rate (under the same distortion) compared to widely used point cloud and range image compression algorithms as well as recent deep methods.

To develop a low-complexity multicast beamforming method for millimeter wave communications, we first propose a channel gain estimation method in this article. We use the beam swee** to find the best codeword and its two neighboring codewords to form a composite beam. We then estimate the channel gain based on the composite beam, which is computed off-line by minimizing the variance of beam gain within beam coverage. With the estimated channel gain, we propose a multicast beamforming design method under the max-min fair (MMF) criterion. To reduce the computational complexity, we divide the large antenna array into several small-size sub-arrays, where the size of each sub-array is determined by the estimated channel gain. In particular, we introduce a phase factor for each sub-array to explore additional degree of freedom for the considered problem. Simulation results show that the proposed multicast beamforming design method can substantially reduce the computational complexity with little performance sacrifice compared to the existing methods.

In this paper, multiuser beam training based on hierarchical codebook for millimeter wave massive multi-input multi-output is investigated, where the base station (BS) simultaneously performs beam training with multiple user equipments (UEs). For the UEs, an alternative minimization method with a closed-form expression (AMCF) is proposed to design the hierarchical codebook under the constant modulus constraint. To speed up the convergence of the AMCF, an initialization method based on Zadoff-Chu sequence is proposed. For the BS, a simultaneous multiuser beam training scheme based on an adaptively designed hierarchical codebook is proposed, where the codewords in the current layer of the codebook are designed according to the beam training results of the previous layer. The codewords at the BS are designed with multiple mainlobes, each covering a spatial region for one or more UEs. Energy efficiency (EE) is an important aspect of satellite communications. Different with the existing algorithms that typically use the first-order Taylor lower bound approximation to convert non-convex EE maximization (EEM) problems into convex ones, in this letter a two-step quadratic transformation method is presented. In the first step, the fractional form of the achievable rate over the total power consumption is converted into a non-fractional form based on quadratic transformation. In the second step, the fractional form of the signal power over the interference-and-noise power is further converted into a non-fractional form, still based on quadratic transformation. After the two-step quadratic transformation, the original EEM problem is converted into an equivalent convex one. Then an alternating optimization algorithm is presented to solve it by iteratively performing two stages until a stop condition is satisfied. Simulation results show that the presented algorithm can fast converge and its performance is better than that of the sequential convex approximation algorithm and the multibeam interference mitigation algorithm.

We design the transmit beam of a dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) base station (BS), aiming at approaching the objective radar beam pattern, subject to the constraints of the signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of communication users and total transmission power of the DFRC BS. Then based on the designed transmit beam, we determine the analog beamformer and digital beamformer subject to the constant envelop constraint of phase shifter network in mmWave MIMO, still using the alternating minimization method. Simulation results show that under the same SINR constraint of communication users, larger antenna array can achieve better radar beam quality.

Also, the large-scale annotated dataset is the essential key to a successful training procedure. However, it is a huge challenge to get such datasets in the medical domain. We add semi-supervised attention modules to generate images with convincing details. We treat tumor images and normal images as two domains. The proposed GANs-based model can generate a tumor image from a normal image, and in turn, it can also generate a normal image from a tumor image. Furthermore, we show that generated medical images can be used for improving the performance of ResNet18 for medical image classification. Our model is applied to three limited datasets of tumor MRI images. We first generate MRI images on limited datasets, then we trained three popular classification models to get the best model for tumor classification. Finally, we train the classification model using real images with classic data augmentation methods and classification models using synthetic images. The classification results between those trained models showed that the proposed SAG-GAN data augmentation method can boost Accuracy and AUC compare with classic data augmentation methods. We believe the proposed data augmentation method can apply to other medical image domains, and improve the accuracy of computer-assisted diagnosis.

In this article, we propose a strategy for the active manipulation of scalar Helmholtz fields in bounded near field regions of an active source while maintaining desired radiation patterns in prescribed far field directions. This control problem is considered in two environments: free space and respectively, homogeneous ocean of constant depth. In both media, we proved the existence of and characterized the surface input, modeled as Neumann data (normal velocity) or Dirichlet data (surface pressure) such that the radiated field satisfies the control constraints. We also provide a numerical strategy to construct this predicted surface input by using a method of moments-approach with a Morozov discrepancy principle-based Tikhonov regularization. Several numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the proposed scheme in scenarios relevant to practical applications.

Aiming at maximizing the energy efficiency (EE) of multicast multibeam satellite communications, we consider the precoding design under the total power and quality of service (QoS) constraints. Since the original EE maximization problem is nonconvex, it is sequentially converted into a concave-convex fractional programming problem by introducing some variables and using the first-order Taylor low bound approximation. Based on the Charnes-Cooper transformation, it is further converted into a convex problem. Then an iterative algorithm is presented to design the energy efficient precoding. To find feasible initialization points for the algorithm and ensure its convergence, another convex optimization problem with some nonnegative slack variables and a positive penalty parameter is iteratively solved. In particular, the algorithm is verified by the measured channel data of multibeam satellite communications.

Channel estimation and hybrid precoding are considered for multi-user millimeter wave massive multi-input multi-output system. A deep learning compressed sensing (DLCS) channel estimation scheme is proposed. The channel estimation neural network for the DLCS scheme is trained offline using simulated environments to predict the beamspace channel amplitude. Then the channel is reconstructed based on the obtained indices of dominant beamspace channel entries. A deep learning quantized phase (DLQP) hybrid precoder design method is developed after channel estimation. The training hybrid precoding neural network for the DLQP method is obtained offline considering the approximate phase quantization. Then the deployment hybrid precoding neural network (DHPNN) is obtained by replacing the approximate phase quantization with ideal phase quantization and the output of the DHPNN is the analog precoding vector. Finally, the analog precoding matrix is obtained by stacking the analog precoding vectors and the digital precoding matrix is calculated by zero-forcing. Simulation results demonstrate that the DLCS channel estimation scheme outperforms the existing schemes in terms of the normalized mean-squared error and the spectral efficiency, while the DLQP hybrid precoder design method has better spectral efficiency performance than other methods with low phase shifter resolution.

In this paper, we develop two high-resolution channel estimation schemes based on the estimating signal parameters via the rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) method for frequency-selective millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems. The first scheme is based on two-dimensional ESPRIT (TDE), which includes three stages of pilot transmission. This scheme first estimates the angles of arrival (AoA) and angles of departure (AoD) and then pairs the AoA and AoD. The other scheme reduces the pilot transmission from three stages to two stages and therefore reduces the pilot overhead. It is based on one-dimensional ESPRIT and minimum searching (EMS). It first estimates the AoD of each channel path and then searches the minimum from the identified mainlobe. To guarantee the robust channel estimation performance, we also develop a hybrid precoding and combining matrices design method so that the received signal power keeps almost the same for any AoA and AoD. Finally, we demonstrate that the proposed two schemes outperform the existing channel estimation schemes in terms of computational complexity and performance.

This article investigates beam alignment for multi-user millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multi-input multi-output system. Unlike the existing works using machine learning (ML), an alignment method with partial beams using ML (AMPBML) is proposed without any prior knowledge such as user location information. The neural network (NN) for the AMPBML is trained offline using simulated environments according to the mmWave channel model and is then deployed online to predict the beam distribution vector using partial beams. Afterwards, the beams for all users are all aligned simultaneously based on the indices of the dominant entries of the obtained beam distribution vector. Simulation results demonstrate that the AMPBML outperforms the existing methods, including the adaptive compressed sensing, hierarchical search, and multi-path decomposition and recovery, in terms of the total training time slots and the spectral efficiency.

In this paper, a two-step codeword design approach for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems is presented. Ideal codewords are first designed, which ignores the hardware constraints in terms of phase shifter resolution and the number of RF chains. Based on the ideal codewords, practical codewords are then obtained taking the hardware constraints into consideration. For the ideal codeword design in the first step, additional phase is introduced to the beam gain to provide extra degree of freedom. We develop a phase-shifted ideal codeword design (PS-ICD) method, which is based on alternative minimization with each iteration having a closed-form solution and can be extended to design more general beamforming vectors with different beam patterns. Once the ideal codewords are obtained in the first step, the practical codeword design problem in the second step is to approach the ideal codewords by considering the hardware constraints of the hybrid precoding structure in terms of phase shifter resolution and the number of RF chains. We propose a fast search based alternative minimization (FS-AltMin) algorithm that alternatively designs the analog precoder and digital precoder. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods and show that the codewords designed based on the two-step approach outperform those designed by the existing approaches.

Instead of merely improving the spectral efficiency (SE), improving the energy efficiency (EE) is another important concern for multibeam satellite systems, due to the power constraint of satellites. However, so far there has been no detailed work on the precoding design concerning the EE for multibeam satellite. In this work, the EE maximization problem is investigated for multibeam satellite systems under the total power constraint as well as the quality of service (QoS) constraints. Precoding design algorithms based on zero forcing (ZF) and sequential convex approximation (SCA) are presented respectively. In particular, these algorithms are verified by the real measured channel data of multibeam satellite systems. Numerical results show that the precoding algorithm based on SCA outperforms that based on ZF. It is also implied that the EE cannot be always improved by solely increasing the power of the satellite, while reducing the satellite operation power is an effective way for the EE improvement.

Since each computation of the achievable sum-rate can be performed only after the analog precoder and digital precoder are both determined, the maximization of the achievable sum-rate has intractable computational complexity. By introducing the interference free (IF) achievable sum-rate, the design of the analog and digital precoders can be decoupled. To avoid the beam conflict and maximize the IF achievable sum-rate, a Hungarian-based codeword selection algorithm is proposed for the analog precoding design. We investigate beam training and allocation for multiuser millimeter wave massive MIMO systems. An orthogonal pilot based beam training scheme is first developed to reduce the number of training times, where all users can simultaneously perform the beam training with the base station (BS). As the number of users increases, the same beam from the BS may point to different users, leading to beam conflict and multiuser interference. Therefore, a quality-of-service (QoS) constrained (QC) beam allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the equivalent channel gain of the QoS-satisfied users, under the premise that the number of the QoS-satisfied users without beam conflict is maximized. To reduce the overhead of beam training, two partial beam training schemes, an interlaced scanning (IS) and a selection probability (SP) based schemes, are proposed. The overhead of beam training for the IS-based scheme can be reduced by nearly half while the overhead for the SP-based scheme is flexible. Simulation results show that the QC-based beam allocation scheme can effectively mitigate the interference caused by the beam conflict and significantly improve the spectral efficiency while the IS-based and SP-based schemes significantly reduce the overhead of beam training at the cost of sacrificing spectral efficiency a little.
