In this paper, we investigate covert communications in a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS)-aided rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) system. Under the RSMA principles, the messages for the covert user (Bob) and public user (Grace) are converted to the common and private streams at the legitimate transmitter (Alice) to realize downlink transmissions, while the STAR-RIS is deployed not only to aid the public transmissions from Alice to Grace, but also to shield the covert transmissions from Alice to Bob against the warden (Willie). To characterize the covert performance of the considered STAR-RIS-aided RSMA (STAR-RIS-RSMA) system, we derive analytical expression for the minimum average detection error probability of Willie, based on which a covert rate maximization problem is formulated. To maximize Bob's covert rate while confusing Willie's monitoring, the transmit power allocation, common rate allocation, and STAR-RIS reflection/transmission beamforming are jointly optimized subject to Grace's quality of service (QoS) requirements. The non-convex covert rate maximization problem, consisting of highly coupled system parameters are decoupled into three sub-problems of transmit power allocation, common rate allocation, and STAR-RIS reflection/transmission beamforming, respectively. To obtain the rank-one constrained optimal solution for the sub-problem of optimizing the STAR-RIS reflection/transmission beamforming, a penalty-based successive convex approximation scheme is developed. Moreover, an alternative optimization (AO) algorithm is designed to determine the optimal solution for the sub-problem of optimizing the transmit power allocation, while the original problem is overall solved by a new AO algorithm.

NEWFOCUS is an EU COST Action targeted at exploring radical solutions that could influence the design of future wireless networks. The project aims to address some of the challenges associated with optical wireless communication (OWC) and to establish it as a complementary technology to the radio frequency (RF)-based wireless systems in order to meet the demanding requirements of the fifth generation (5G) and the future sixth generation (6G) backhaul and access networks. Only 6G will be able to widely serve the exponential growth in connected devices (i.e., more than 500 billion) in 2030, real-time holographic communication, future virtual reality, etc. Space is emerging as the new frontier in 5 and 6G and beyond communication networks, where it offers high-speed wireless coverage to remote areas both in lands and sees. This activity is supported by the recent development of low-altitude Earth orbit satellite mega-constellations. The focus of this 2nd White Paper is on the use of OWC as an enabling technology for medium- and long-range links for deployment in (i) smart-cities and intelligent transportation systems; (ii) first- and last-mile access and backhaul/fronthaul wireless networks; (iii) hybrid free-space optics/RF adaptive wireless connections; (iv) space-to-ground, inter-satellite, ground-to-air, and air-to-air communications; and (v) underwater communications.

The sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks must increase coverage and improve spectral efficiency, especially for cell-edge users. Distributed multiple-input multiple-output (D-MIMO) networks can fulfill these requirements provided that transmission/reception points (TRxPs) of the network can be synchronized with sub nanosecond precision, however, synchronization with current backhaul and fronthaul digital interfaces is challenging. For 6G new services and scenarios, analog radio-over-fiber (ARoF) is a prospective alternative for future mobile fronthaul where current solutions fall short to fulfill future demands on bandwidth, synchronization, and/or power consumption. This paper presents an experimental validation of coherent joint transmissions (CJTs) in a two TRxPs D-MIMO network where ARoF fronthaul links allow to meet the required level of synchronization. Results show that by means of CJT a combined diversity and power gain of +5 dB is realized in comparison with a single TRxP transmission.

Radar target recognition (RTR), as a key technology of intelligent radar systems, has been well investigated. Accurate RTR at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) still remains an open challenge. Most existing methods are based on a single radar or the homogeneous radar network, which do not fully exploit frequency-dimensional information. In this paper, a two-stream semantic feature fusion model, termed Multi-faceted Graph Attention Network (MF-GAT), is proposed to greatly improve the accuracy in the low SNR region of the heterogeneous radar network. By fusing the features extracted from the source domain and transform domain via a graph attention network model, the MF-GAT model distills higher-level semantic features before classification in a unified framework. Extensive experiments are presented to demonstrate that the proposed model can greatly improve the RTR performance at low SNRs.

The wind power ramp events threaten the power grid safety significantly. To improve the ramp prediction accuracy, a hybrid wavelet deep belief network algorithm with adaptive feature selection (WDBNAFS) is proposed. First, the wind power characteristic is analyzed. Then, wavelet decomposition is addressed to the time series, and an adaptive feature selection algorithm is proposed to select the inputs of the prediction model. Finally, a deep belief network is employed to predict the wind power ramp event, and the proposed WDBNAFS was testified with the experiments based on the practical data. The simulation results demonstrate that the prediction accuracy of the proposed algorithm is more than 90%.

This paper reports the demonstration of high-speed PAM-4 transmission using a 1.5-μm single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser (SM-VCSEL) over multicore fiber with 7 cores over different distances. We have successfully generated up to 70 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signals with a VCSEL in optical back-to-back, and transmitted 50 Gbaud PAM-4 signals over both 1-km dispersion-uncompensated and 10-km dispersion-compensated in each core, enabling a total data throughput of 700 Gbps over the 7-core fiber. Moreover, 56 Gbaud PAM-4 over 1-km has also been shown, whereby unfortunately not all cores provide the required 3.8 $\times$ 10 $^{-3}$ bit error rate (BER) for the 7% overhead-hard decision forward error correction (7% OH HDFEC). The limited bandwidth of the VCSEL and the adverse chromatic dispersion of the fiber are suppressed with pre-equalization based on accurate end-to-end channel characterizations. With a digital post-equalization, BER performance below the 7% OH-HDFEC limit is achieved over all cores. The demonstrated results show a great potential to realize high-capacity and compact short-reach optical interconnects for data centers.

Abstract:
Kernel adaptive filtering (KAF) is proposed for nonlinearity-tolerant optical direct detection. For 7x128Gbit/s PAM4 transmission over 33.6km 7-core-fiber, KAF only needs 10 equalizer taps to reach KP4-FEC limit ([email protected]), whereas decision-feedback-equalizer needs 43 equalizer taps to reach HD-FEC limit ([email protected]).
