The large untapped spectrum in sub-THz allows for ultra-high throughput communication to realize many seemingly impossible applications in 6G. Phase noise (PN) is one key hardware impairment, which is accentuated as we increase the frequency and bandwidth. Furthermore, the modest output power of the power amplifier demands limits on peak to average power ratio (PAPR) signal design. In this work, we design a PN-robust, low PAPR single-carrier (SC) waveform by geometrically sha** the constellation and adapting the pulse sha** filter pair under practical PN modeling and adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) constraints for a given excess bandwidth. We optimize the waveforms under conventional and state-of-the-art PN-aware demappers. Moreover, we introduce a neural-network (NN) demapper enhancing transceiver adaptability. We formulate the waveform optimization problem in its augmented Lagrangian form and use a back-propagation-inspired technique to obtain a design that is numerically robust to PN, while adhering to PAPR and ACLR constraints. The results substantiate the efficacy of the method, yielding up to 2.5 dB in the required Eb/N0 under stronger PN along with a PAPR reduction of 0.5 dB. Moreover, PAPR reductions up to 1.2 dB are possible with competitive BLER and SE performance in both low and high PN conditions.

In medical imaging, accurate image segmentation is crucial for quantifying diseases, assessing prognosis, and evaluating treatment outcomes. However, existing methods lack an in-depth integration of global and local features, failing to pay special attention to abnormal regions and boundary details in medical images. To this end, we present a novel deep learning-based approach, MIPC-Net, for precise boundary segmentation in medical images. Our approach, inspired by radiologists' working patterns, features two distinct modules: (i) \textbf{Mutual Inclusion of Position and Channel Attention (MIPC) module}: To enhance the precision of boundary segmentation in medical images, we introduce the MIPC module, which enhances the focus on channel information when extracting position features and vice versa; (ii) \textbf{GL-MIPC-Residue}: To improve the restoration of medical images, we propose the GL-MIPC-Residue, a global residual connection that enhances the integration of the encoder and decoder by filtering out invalid information and restoring the most effective information lost during the feature extraction process. We evaluate the performance of the proposed model using metrics such as Dice coefficient (DSC) and Hausdorff Distance (HD) on three publicly accessible datasets: Synapse, ISIC2018-Task, and Segpc. Our ablation study shows that each module contributes to improving the quality of segmentation results. Furthermore, with the assistance of both modules, our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods across all metrics on the benchmark datasets, notably achieving a 2.23mm reduction in HD on the Synapse dataset, strongly evidencing our model's enhanced capability for precise image boundary segmentation. This paper investigates the problem of informative path planning for a mobile robotic sensor network in spatially temporally distributed map**. The robots are able to gather noisy measurements from an area of interest during their movements to build a Gaussian Process (GP) model of a spatio-temporal field. The model is then utilized to predict the spatio-temporal phenomenon at different points of interest. To spatially and temporally navigate the group of robots so that they can optimally acquire maximal information gains while their connectivity is preserved, we propose a novel multistep prediction informative path planning optimization strategy employing our newly defined local cost functions. By using the dual decomposition method, it is feasible and practical to effectively solve the optimization problem in a distributed manner. The proposed method was validated through synthetic experiments utilizing real-world data sets.

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a prospective wireless technology that enhances wireless channel quality. An RIS is often equipped with passive array of elements and provides cost and power-efficient solutions for coverage extension of wireless communication systems. Without any radio frequency (RF) chains or computing resources, however, the RIS requires control information to be sent to it from an external unit, e.g., a base station (BS). The control information can be delivered by wired or wireless channels, and the BS must be aware of the RIS and the RIS-related channel conditions in order to effectively configure its behavior. Recent works have introduced hybrid RIS structures possessing a few active elements that can sense and digitally process received data. Here, we propose the operation of an entirely autonomous RIS that operates without a control link between the RIS and BS. Using a few sensing elements, the autonomous RIS employs a deep Q network (DQN) based on reinforcement learning in order to enhance the sum rate of the network. Our results illustrate the potential of deploying autonomous RISs in wireless networks with essentially no network overhead.

Terahertz (THz) communication is envisioned as one of the candidate technologies for future wireless communications to enable achievable data rates of up to several terabits per second (Tbps). However, the high pathloss and molecular absorption in THz band communications often limit the transmission range. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes intelligent reconfigurable surface (IRS)-aided THz networks with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, we present an angle-based trigonometric channel model to facilitate the performance evaluation of IRS-aided THz networks. In addition, to maximize the sum rate, we formulate the transmitter (Tx)-IRS-receiver (Rx) matching problem, which is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. To address this non-deterministic polynomial-time hard (NP-hard) problem, we propose a Gale-Shapley algorithm-based solutions to obtain stable matching between transmitters and IRSs, and receivers and IRSs, in the first and second sub-problems, respectively. The impact of the transmission power, the number of IRS elements, and the network area on the sum rate are investigated. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is compared to an exhaustive search, nearest association, greedy search, and random allocation to validate the proposed solution. The complexity and convergence analysis demonstrate that the computational complexity of our algorithm is lower than that of the ES method.

This paper presents an original energy management methodology to enhance the resilience of ship power systems. The integration of various energy storage systems (ESS), including battery energy storage systems (BESS) and super-capacitor energy storage systems (SCESS), in modern ship power systems poses challenges in designing an efficient energy management system (EMS). The EMS proposed in this paper aims to achieve multiple objectives. The primary objective is to minimize shed loads, while the secondary objective is to effectively manage different types of ESS. Considering the diverse ramp-rate characteristics of generators, SCESS, and BESS, the proposed EMS exploits these differences to determine an optimal long-term schedule for minimizing shed loads. Furthermore, the proposed EMS balances the state-of-charge (SoC) of ESS and prioritizes the SCESS's SoC levels to ensure the efficient operation of BESS and SCESS. For better computational efficiency, we introduce the receding horizon optimization method, enabling real-time EMS implementation. A comparison with the fixed horizon optimization (FHO) validates its effectiveness. Simulation studies and results demonstrate that the proposed EMS efficiently manages generators, BESS, and SCESS, ensuring system resilience under generation shortages. Additionally, the proposed methodology significantly reduces the computational burden compared to the FHO technique while maintaining acceptable resilience performance.

Fake path injection is an emerging paradigm for inducing privacy over wireless networks. In this paper, fake paths are injected by the transmitter into a SIMO multipath communication channel to preserve her physical location from an eavesdropper. A novel statistical privacy metric is defined as the ratio between the largest (resp. smallest) eigenvalues of Bob's (resp. Eve's) Cramér-Rao lower bound on the SIMO multipath channel parameters to assess the privacy enhancements. Leveraging the spectral properties of generalized Vandermonde matrices, bounds on the privacy margin of the proposed scheme are derived. Specifically, it is shown that the privacy margin increases quadratically in the inverse of the separation between the true and the fake paths under Eve's perspective. Numerical simulations further showcase the approach's benefit.

This paper studies the statistical characterization of ground-to-air (G2A) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted air-to-ground (A2G) communications with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks under the impact of channel aging.
We first model the G2A and A2G signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) as non-central complex Gaussian quadratic random variables (RVs) and derive their exact probability density functions, offering a unique characterization for the A2G SNR as the product of two scaled non-central chi-square RVs. Moreover, we also find that, for a large number of RIS elements, the RIS-assisted A2G channel can be characterized as a single Rician fading channel.
Our results reveal the presence of channel hardening in A2G communication under low UAV speeds, where we derive the maximum target spectral efficiency (SE) for a system to maintain a consistent required outage level. Meanwhile, high UAV speeds, exceeding 50 m/s, lead to a significant performance degradation, which cannot be mitigated by increasing the number of RIS elements.

State estimation is highly critical for accurately observing the dynamic behavior of the power grids and minimizing risks from cyber threats. However, existing state estimation methods encounter challenges in accurately capturing power system dynamics, primarily because of limitations in encoding the grid topology and sparse measurements. This paper proposes a physics-informed graphical learning state estimation method to address these limitations by leveraging both domain physical knowledge and a graph neural network (GNN). We employ a GNN architecture that can handle the graph-structured data of power systems more effectively than traditional data-driven methods. The physics-based knowledge is constructed from the branch current formulation, making the approach adaptable to both transmission and distribution systems. The validation results of three IEEE test systems show that the proposed method can achieve lower mean square error more than 20% than the conventional methods.

Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) addresses computational and battery limitations in devices by allowing them to offload computation tasks. To overcome the difficulties in establishing line-of-sight connections, integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has proven beneficial, offering enhanced data exchange, rapid deployment, and mobility. The utilization of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), specifically simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) technology, further extends coverage capabilities and introduces flexibility in MEC. This study explores the integration of UAV and STAR-RIS to facilitate communication between IoT devices and an MEC server. The formulated problem aims to minimize energy consumption for IoT devices and aerial STAR-RIS by jointly optimizing task offloading, aerial STAR-RIS trajectory, amplitude and phase shift coefficients, and transmit power. Given the non-convexity of the problem and the dynamic environment, solving it directly within a polynomial time frame is challenging. Therefore, deep reinforcement learning (DRL), particularly proximal policy optimization (PPO), is introduced for its sample efficiency and stability. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed system compared to benchmark schemes in the literature.

Joint device-to-device (D2D) and cellular communication is a promising technology for enhancing the spectral efficiency of future wireless networks. However, the interference management problem is challenging since the operating devices and the cellular users share the same spectrum. The emerging reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) technology is a potentially ideal solution for this interference problem since RISs can shape the wireless channel in desired ways. This paper considers an RIS-aided joint D2D and cellular communication system where the RIS is exploited to cancel interference to the D2D links and maximize the minimum signal-to-interference plus noise (SINR) of the device pairs and cellular users. First, we adopt a popular alternating optimization (AO) approach to solve the minimum SINR maximization problem. Then, we propose an interference cancellation (IC)-based approach whose complexity is much lower than that of the AO algorithm. We derive a representation for the RIS phase shift vector which cancels the interference to the D2D links. Based on this representation, the RIS phase shift optimization problem is transformed into an effective D2D channel optimization. We show that the AO approach can converge faster and can even give better performance when it is initialized by the proposed IC solution. We also show that for the case of a single D2D pair, the proposed IC approach can be implemented with limited feedback from the single receive device.

The large untapped spectrum in the sub-THz allows for ultra-high throughput communication to realize many seemingly impossible applications in 6G. One of the challenges in radio communications in sub-THz is the hardware impairments. Specifically, phase noise is one key hardware impairment, which is accentuated as we increase the frequency and bandwidth. Furthermore, the moderate output power of the sub-THz power amplifier demands limits on peak to average power ratio (PAPR) signal design. Single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) has been identified as a suitable candidate for sub-THz, although some challenges such as phase noise and PAPR still remain to be tackled. In this work, we design a phase noise robust, modest PAPR SC waveform by geometrically sha** the constellation under practical conditions. Accurate medical image segmentation is critical for disease quantification and treatment evaluation. While traditional Unet architectures and their transformer-integrated variants excel in automated segmentation tasks. However, they lack the ability to harness the intrinsic position and channel features of image. Existing models also struggle with parameter efficiency and computational complexity, often due to the extensive use of Transformers. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel deep medical image segmentation framework, called DA-TransUNet, aiming to integrate the Transformer and dual attention block(DA-Block) into the traditional U-shaped architecture. Unlike earlier transformer-based U-net models, DA-TransUNet utilizes Transformers and DA-Block to integrate not only global and local features, but also image-specific positional and channel features, improving the performance of medical image segmentation. By incorporating a DA-Block at the embedding layer and within each skip connection layer, we substantially enhance feature extraction capabilities and improve the efficiency of the encoder-decoder structure. DA-TransUNet demonstrates superior performance in medical image segmentation tasks, consistently outperforming state-of-the-art techniques across multiple datasets. In summary, DA-TransUNet offers a significant advancement in medical image segmentation, providing an effective and powerful alternative to existing techniques. To reap the benefits of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), channel state information (CSI) is generally required. However, CSI acquisition in RIS systems is challenging and often results in very large pilot overhead, especially in unstructured channel environments. Consequently, the RIS channel estimation problem has attracted a lot of interest and also been a subject of intense study in recent years. In this paper, we propose a decision-directed RIS channel estimation framework for general unstructured channel models. The employed RIS contains some hybrid elements that can simultaneously reflect and sense the incoming signal. We show that with the help of the hybrid RIS elements, it is possible to accurately recover the CSI with a pilot overhead proportional to the number of users. Therefore, the proposed framework substantially improves the system spectral efficiency compared to systems with passive RIS arrays since the pilot overhead in passive RIS systems is proportional to the number of RIS elements times the number of users. We also perform a detailed spectral efficiency analysis for both the pilot-directed and decision-directed frameworks. Our analysis takes into account both the channel estimation and data detection errors at both the RIS and the BS. Finally, we present numerous simulation results to verify the accuracy of the analysis as well as to show the benefits of the proposed decision-directed framework.

Respiratory diseases remain a leading cause of mortality worldwide, highlighting the need for faster and more accurate diagnostic tools. This work presents a novel approach leveraging digital stethoscope technology for automatic respiratory disease classification and biometric analysis. Our approach has the potential to significantly enhance traditional auscultation practices. By leveraging one of the largest publicly available medical database of respiratory sounds, we train machine learning models to classify various respiratory health conditions. Our method differs from conventional methods by using Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and spectral analysis techniques to isolate clinically relevant biosignals embedded within acoustic data captured by digital stethoscopes. This approach focuses on information closely tied to cardiovascular and respiratory patterns within the acoustic data. Spectral analysis and filtering techniques isolate Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) strongly correlated with these physiological phenomena. These biosignals undergo a comprehensive feature extraction process for predictive modeling. These features then serve as input to train several machine learning models for both classification and regression tasks. Our approach achieves high accuracy in both binary classification (89% balanced accuracy for healthy vs. diseased) and multi-class classification (72% balanced accuracy for specific diseases like pneumonia and COPD). For the first time, this work introduces regression models capable of estimating age and body mass index (BMI) based solely on acoustic data, as well as a model for sex classification. Our findings underscore the potential of intelligent digital stethoscopes to significantly enhance assistive and remote diagnostic capabilities, contributing to advancements in digital health, telehealth, and remote patient monitoring.

Joint communications and sensing (JCAS) is envisioned as a key feature in future wireless communications networks. In massive MIMO-JCAS systems, hybrid beamforming (HBF) is typically employed to achieve satisfactory beamforming gains with reasonable hardware cost and power consumption. Due to the coupling of the analog and digital precoders in HBF and the dual objective in JCAS, JCAS-HBF design problems are very challenging and usually require highly complex algorithms. In this paper, we propose a fast HBF design for JCAS based on deep unfolding to optimize a tradeoff between the communications rate and sensing accuracy. We first derive closed-form expressions for the gradients of the communications and sensing objectives with respect to the precoders and demonstrate that the magnitudes of the gradients pertaining to the analog precoder are typically smaller than those associated with the digital precoder. Based on this observation, we propose a modified projected gradient ascent (PGA) method with significantly improved convergence. We then develop a deep unfolded PGA scheme that efficiently optimizes the communications-sensing performance tradeoff with fast convergence thanks to the well-trained hyperparameters. In doing so, we preserve the interpretability and flexibility of the optimizer while leveraging data to improve performance. Finally, our simulations demonstrate the potential of the proposed deep unfolded method, which achieves up to 33.5% higher communications sum rate and 2.5 dB lower beampattern error compared with the conventional design based on successive convex approximation and Riemannian manifold optimization. Furthermore, it attains up to a 65% reduction in run time and computational complexity with respect to the PGA procedure without unfolding.

This paper presents a novel Cyber-Hardware-in-the-Loop (Cyber-HIL) platform for assessing control operation in ship cyber-physical systems. The proposed platform employs cutting-edge technologies, including Docker containers, real-time simulator $OPAL-RT$, and network emulator $ns3$, to create a secure and controlled testing and deployment environment for investigating the potential impact of cyber attack threats on ship control systems. Real-time experiments were conducted using an advanced load-shedding controller as a control object in both synchronous and asynchronous manners, showcasing the platform's versatility and effectiveness in identifying vulnerabilities and improving overall Ship Cyber Physical System (SCPS) security. Furthermore, the performance of the load-shedding controller under cyber attacks was evaluated by conducting tests with man-in-the-middle (MITM) and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. These attacks were implemented on the communication channels between the controller and the simulated ship system, emulating real-world scenarios. The proposed Cyber-HIL platform provides a comprehensive and effective approach to test and validate the security of ship control systems in the face of cyber threats.

This work discusses the use of contrastive learning and deep learning for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases from electrocardiography (ECG) signals. While the ECG signals usually contain 12 leads (channels), many healthcare facilities and devices lack access to all these 12 leads. This raises the problem of how to use only fewer ECG leads to produce meaningful diagnoses with high performance. We introduce a simple experiment to test whether contrastive learning can be applied to this task. More specifically, we added the similarity between the embedding vectors when the 12 leads signal and the fewer leads ECG signal to the loss function to bring these representations closer together. Despite its simplicity, this has been shown to have improved the performance of diagnosing with all lead combinations, proving the potential of contrastive learning on this task.

High-resolution satellite imagery is a key element for many Earth monitoring applications. Satellites such as Sentinel-2 feature characteristics that are favorable for super-resolution algorithms such as aliasing and band-misalignment. Unfortunately the lack of reliable high-resolution (HR) ground truth limits the application of deep learning methods to this task. In this work we propose L1BSR, a deep learning-based method for single-image super-resolution and band alignment of Sentinel-2 L1B 10m bands. The method is trained with self-supervision directly on real L1B data by leveraging overlap** areas in L1B images produced by adjacent CMOS detectors, thus not requiring HR ground truth. Our self-supervised loss is designed to enforce the super-resolved output image to have all the bands correctly aligned. This is achieved via a novel cross-spectral registration network (CSR) which computes an optical flow between images of different spectral bands. The CSR network is also trained with self-supervision using an Anchor-Consistency loss, which we also introduce in this work. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach on synthetic and real L1B data, where we show that it obtains comparable results to supervised methods.

Breast cancer is a significant public health concern and early detection is critical for triaging high risk patients. Sequential screening mammograms can provide important spatiotemporal information about changes in breast tissue over time. In this study, we propose a deep learning architecture called RADIFUSION that utilizes sequential mammograms and incorporates a linear image attention mechanism, radiomic features, a new gating mechanism to combine different mammographic views, and bilateral asymmetry-based finetuning for breast cancer risk assessment. We evaluate our model on a screening dataset called Cohort of Screen-Aged Women (CSAW) dataset. Based on results obtained on the independent testing set consisting of 1,749 women, our approach achieved superior performance compared to other state-of-the-art models with area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) of 0.905, 0.872 and 0.866 in the three respective metrics of 1-year AUC, 2-year AUC and > 2-year AUC. Our study highlights the importance of incorporating various deep learning mechanisms, such as image attention, radiomic features, gating mechanism, and bilateral asymmetry-based fine-tuning, to improve the accuracy of breast cancer risk assessment. We also demonstrate that our model's performance was enhanced by leveraging spatiotemporal information from sequential mammograms. Our findings suggest that RADIFUSION can provide clinicians with a powerful tool for breast cancer risk assessment.

One-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are a practical and promising solution for reducing cost and power consumption in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, the one-bit precoding problem is NP-hard and even more challenging in frequency-selective fading channels compared to the flat-fading scenario. While block-wise processing (BWP) can effectively address the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) in frequency-selective fading channels, its computational complexity and processing delay can be too high for practical implementation. An alternative solution to alleviate the processing complexity and delay issues is symbol-wise processing (SWP) which sequentially designs the transmit signals. However, existing SWP work leaves unwanted interference for later signal designs. In this paper, we propose an SWP approach which can efficiently address the ISI even at the symbol rate. The idea is to design the transmit signal to not only be beneficial for its time slot, but also to provide constructive interference for subsequent symbols. We develop two active ISI processing methods that significantly outperform a conventional approach, one of which that even outperforms the BWP approach at low SNR.

Image resolution is an important criterion for many applications based on satellite imagery. In this work, we adapt a state-of-the-art kernel regression technique for smartphone camera burst super-resolution to satellites. This technique leverages the local structure of the image to optimally steer the fusion kernels, limiting blur in the final high-resolution prediction, denoising the image, and recovering details up to a zoom factor of 2. We extend this approach to the multi-exposure case to predict from a sequence of multi-exposure low-resolution frames a high-resolution and noise-free one. Experiments on both single and multi-exposure scenarios show the merits of the approach. Since the fusion is learning-free, the proposed method is ensured to not hallucinate details, which is crucial for many remote sensing applications.

Cell-free massive MIMO is a promising technology for beyond-5G networks. Through the deployment of many cooperating access points (AP), the technology can significantly enhance user coverage and spectral efficiency compared to traditional cellular systems. Since the APs are distributed over a large area, the level of favorable propagation in cell-free massive MIMO is less than the one in colocated massive MIMO. As a result, the current linear processing schemes are not close to the optimal ones when the number of AP antennas is not very large. The aim of this paper is to develop nonlinear variational Bayes (VB) methods for data detection in cell-free massive MIMO systems. Contrary to existing work in the literature, which only attained point estimates of the transmit data symbols, the proposed methods aim to obtain the posterior distribution and the Bayes estimate of the data symbols. We develop the VB methods accordingly to the levels of cooperation among the APs. Simulation results show significant performance advantages of the developed VB methods over the linear processing techniques.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications using low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) is a promising technology for providing high spectral and energy efficiency with affordable hardware cost and power consumption. However, the use of low-resolution ADCs requires special signal processing methods for channel estimation and data detection since the resulting system is severely non-linear. This paper proposes joint channel estimation and data detection methods for massive MIMO systems with low-resolution ADCs based on the variational Bayes (VB) inference framework. We first derive matched-filter quantized VB (MF-QVB) and linear minimum mean-squared error quantized VB (LMMSE-QVB) detection methods assuming the channel state information (CSI) is available. Then we extend these methods to the joint channel estimation and data detection (JED) problem and propose two methods we refer to as MF-QVB-JED and LMMSE-QVB-JED. Unlike conventional VB-based detection methods that assume knowledge of the second-order statistics of the additive noise, we propose to float the noise variance/covariance matrix as an unknown random variable that is used to account for both the noise and the residual inter-user interference. We also present practical aspects of the QVB framework to improve its implementation stability. Finally, we show via numerical results that the proposed VB-based methods provide robust performance and also significantly outperform existing methods.

Various intervention therapies ranging from pharmaceutical to hi-tech tailored solutions have been available to treat difficulty in falling asleep commonly caused by insomnia in modern life. However, current techniques largely remain ill-suited, ineffective, and unreliable due to their lack of precise real-time sleep tracking, in-time feedback on the therapies, an ability to keep people asleep during the night, and a large-scale effectiveness evaluation. Here, we introduce a novel sleep aid system, called Earable, that can continuously sense multiple head-based physiological signals and simultaneously enable closed-loop auditory stimulation to entrain brain activities in time for effective sleep promotion. We develop the system in a lightweight, comfortable, and user-friendly headband with a comprehensive set of algorithms and dedicated own-designed audio stimuli. We conducted multiple protocols from 883 sleep studies on 377 subjects (241 women, 119 men) wearing either a gold-standard device (PSG), Earable, or both concurrently. We demonstrate that our system achieves (1) a strong correlation (0.89 +/- 0.03) between the physiological signals acquired by Earable and those from the gold-standard PSG, (2) an 87.8 +/- 5.3% agreement on sleep scoring using our automatic real-time sleep staging algorithm with the consensus scored by three sleep technicians, and (3) a successful non-pharmacological stimulation alternative to effectively shorten the duration of sleep falling by 24.1 +/- 0.1 minutes. These results show that the efficacy of Earable exceeds existing techniques in intentions to promote fast falling asleep, track sleep state accurately, and achieve high social acceptance for real-time closed-loop personalized neuromodulation-based home sleep care.

Blockchain has recently been depicted as a secure protocol for information exchange in cyber-physical microgrids. However, it is still found vulnerable to consensus manipulation attacks. These stealth attacks are often difficult to detect as they use kernel-level access to mask their actions. In this paper, we firstly build a trusted and secured peer-to-peer network mechanism for physical DC microgrids' validation of transactions over Distributed Ledger. Secondly, we leverage from a physics-informed approach for detecting malware-infected nodes and then recovering from stealth attacks using a self-healing recovery scheme augmented into the microgrid Blockchain network. This scheme allows compromised nodes to adapt to a reconstructed trustworthy signal in a multi-hop manner using corresponding measurements from the reliable nodes in the network. Additionally, recognizing the possible threat of denial-of-service attacks and random time delays (where information sharing via communication channels is blocked), we also integrate a model-free predictive controller with the proposed system that can locally reconstruct an expected version of the attacked/delayed signals. This supplements the capabilities of Blockchain, enabling it to detect and mitigate consensus manipulation attempts, and network latencies.

This paper proposes a novel integrated multiport bidirectional back-to-back power converter for a type-4 wind turbine that accommodates a battery and supercapacitor for energy storage. The circuit topology reduces 4 switches compared to the traditional configuration. Moreover, owing to the dual-buck structure embedded in the phase leg, the circuitry has no short-circuit path, therefore it withstands short-circuited events for a much longer time than the normal phase-leg and prevents the reverse current in turn-off recovery. The use of a hybrid energy storage system with battery and supercapacitor helps smooth out the power output under wind gusts and stabilizes the DC-link voltage under grid fault conditions. The case studies are carried out with a 1.5 MW wind turbine system. Simulation results are provided for the theoretical validation.

Wireless sensor networks consist of randomly distributed sensor nodes for monitoring targets or areas of interest. Maintaining the network for continuous surveillance is a challenge due to the limited battery capacity in each sensor. Wireless power transfer technology is emerging as a reliable solution for energizing the sensors by deploying a mobile charger (MC) to recharge the sensor. However, designing an optimal charging path for the MC is challenging because of uncertainties arising in the networks. The energy consumption rate of the sensors may fluctuate significantly due to unpredictable changes in the network topology, such as node failures. These changes also lead to shifts in the importance of each sensor, which are often assumed to be the same in existing works. We address these challenges in this paper by proposing a novel adaptive charging scheme using a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach. Specifically, we endow the MC with a charging policy that determines the next sensor to charge conditioning on the current state of the network. We then use a deep neural network to parametrize this charging policy, which will be trained by reinforcement learning techniques. Our model can adapt to spontaneous changes in the network topology. The empirical results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing on-demand algorithms by a significant margin.

In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) assisted mobile edge computing systems have been exploited by researchers as a promising solution for providing computation services to mobile users outside of terrestrial infrastructure coverage. However, it remains challenging for the standalone MEC-enabled UAVs in order to meet the computation requirement of numerous mobile users due to the limited computation capacity of their onboard servers and battery lives. Therefore, we propose a collaborative scheme among UAVs so that UAVs can share the workload with idle UAVs. Moreover, current task offloading strategies frequently overlook task topology, which may result in poor performance or even system failure. To address the problem, we consider offloading tasks consisting of a set of sub-tasks, and each sub-task has dependencies on other sub-tasks, which is practical in the real world. Sub-tasks with dependencies need to wait for the resulting signal from preceding sub-tasks before being executed. This mechanism has serious effects on the offloading strategy. Then, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the average latency experienced by users by jointly controlling the offloading decision for dependent tasks and allocating the communication resources of UAVs. The formulated problem appears to be NP-hard and cannot be solved in polynomial time. Therefore, we divide the problem into two sub-problems: the offloading decision problem and the communication resource allocation problem. Then a meta-heuristic method is proposed to find the sub-optimal solution of the task offloading problem, while the communication resource allocation problem is solved by using convex optimization. Finally, we perform substantial simulation experiments, and the result shows that the proposed offloading technique effectively minimizes the average latency of users, compared with other benchmark schemes.

Wind energy is expected to be one of the leading ways to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement but it in turn heavily depends on effective management of its operations and maintenance (O&M) costs. Blade failures account for one-third of all O&M costs thus making accurate detection of blade damages, especially cracks, very important for sustained operations and cost savings. Traditionally, damage inspection has been a completely manual process thus making it subjective, error-prone, and time-consuming. Hence in this work, we bring more objectivity, scalability, and repeatability in our damage inspection process, using deep learning, to miss fewer cracks. We build a deep learning model trained on a large dataset of blade damages, collected by our drone-based inspection, to correctly detect cracks. Our model is already in production and has processed more than a million damages with a recall of 0.96. We also focus on model interpretability using class activation maps to get a peek into the model workings. The model not only performs as good as human experts but also better in certain tricky cases. Thus, in this work, we aim to increase wind energy adoption by decreasing one of its major hurdles - the O\&M costs resulting from missing blade failures like cracks.

In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive decoding mechanism (ADM) for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled uplink (UL) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communications. Specifically, considering a harsh UAV environment, where ground-to-ground links are regularly unavailable, the proposed ADM overcomes the challenging problem of conventional UL-NOMA systems whose performance is sensitive to the transmitter's statistical channel state information and the receiver's decoding order. To evaluate the performance of the ADM, we derive closed-form expressions for the system outage probability (OP) and system throughput. In the performance analysis section, we provide novel expressions for practical air-to-ground and ground-to-air channels, while taking into account the practical implementation of imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC) in UL-NOMA. Moreover, the obtained expression can be adopted to characterize the OP of various systems under a Mixture of Gamma (MG) distribution-based fading channels. Next, we propose a sub-optimal Gradient Descent-based algorithm to obtain the power allocation coefficients that result in maximum throughput with respect to each location on UAV's trajectory. To determine the significance of the proposed ADM in nonstationary environments, we consider the ground users and the UAV to move according to the Random Waypoint Mobility (RWM) and Reference Point Group Mobility (RPGM) models, respectively. Accurate formulas for the distance distributions are also provided. Numerical solutions demonstrate that the ADM-enhanced NOMA not only outperforms Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA), but also improves the performance of UAV-enabled UL-NOMA even in mobile environments.

In recent years, industrial manufacturing has undergone massive technological changes that embrace digitalization and automation towards the vision of intelligent manufacturing plants. With the aim of maximizing efficiency and profitability in production, an important goal is to enable flexible manufacturing, both, for the customer (desiring more individualized products) and for the manufacturer (to adjust to market demands). Manufacturing-as-a-service can support this through manufacturing plants that are used by different tenants who utilize the machines in the plant, which are offered by different providers. To enable such pay-per-use business models, Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) is a viable option to establish decentralized trust and traceability. Thus, in this paper, we study potential DLT technologies for an efficient and intelligent integration of DLT-based solutions in manufacturing environments. We propose a general framework to adapt DLT in manufacturing, then we introduce the use case of shared manufacturing, which we utilize to study the communication and computation efficiency of selected DLTs in resource-constrained wireless IoT networks.

Modern Earth observation satellites capture multi-exposure bursts of push-frame images that can be super-resolved via computational means. In this work, we propose a super-resolution method for such multi-exposure sequences, a problem that has received very little attention in the literature. The proposed method can handle the signal-dependent noise in the inputs, process sequences of any length, and be robust to inaccuracies in the exposure times. Furthermore, it can be trained end-to-end with self-supervision, without requiring ground truth high resolution frames, which makes it especially suited to handle real data. Central to our method are three key contributions: i) a base-detail decomposition for handling errors in the exposure times, ii) a noise-level-aware feature encoding for improved fusion of frames with varying signal-to-noise ratio and iii) a permutation invariant fusion strategy by temporal pooling operators. We evaluate the proposed method on synthetic and real data and show that it outperforms by a significant margin existing single-exposure approaches that we adapted to the multi-exposure case.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a key technology for emerging next-generation wireless systems. Utilizing large antenna arrays at base-stations, massive MIMO enables substantial spatial multiplexing gains by simultaneously serving a large number of users. However, the complexity in massive MIMO signal processing (e.g., data detection) increases rapidly with the number of users, making conventional hand-engineered algorithms less computationally efficient. Low-complexity massive MIMO detection algorithms, especially those inspired or aided by deep learning, have emerged as a promising solution. While there exist many MIMO detection algorithms, the aim of this magazine paper is to provide insight into how to leverage deep neural networks (DNN) for massive MIMO detection. We review recent developments in DNN-based MIMO detection that incorporate the domain knowledge of established MIMO detection algorithms with the learning capability of DNNs. We then present a comparison of the key numerical performance metrics of these works. We conclude by describing future research areas and applications of DNNs in massive MIMO receivers.

Vehicular edge computing has recently been proposed to support computation-intensive applications in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) such as self-driving cars and augmented reality. Despite progress in this area, significant challenges remain to efficiently allocate limited computation resources to a range of time-critical ITS tasks. To this end, the current paper develops a new task assignment scheme for vehicles in a highway. Because of the high speed of vehicles and the limited communication range of road side units (RSUs), the computation tasks of participating vehicles are to be dynamically migrated across multiple servers. We formulate a binary nonlinear programming (BNLP) problem of assigning computation tasks from vehicles to RSUs and a macrocell base station. To deal with the potentially large size of the formulated optimization problem, we develop a distributed multi-agent regret-matching learning algorithm. Based on the regret minimization principle, the proposed algorithm employs a forgetting method that allows the learning process to quickly adapt to and effectively handle the high mobility feature of vehicle networks. We theoretically prove that it converges to the correlated equilibrium solutions of the considered BNLP problem. Simulation results with practical parameter settings show that the proposed algorithm offers the lowest total delay and cost of processing tasks, as well as utility fairness among agents. Importantly, our algorithm converges much faster than existing methods as the problem size grows, demonstrating its clear advantage in large-scale vehicular networks.
