Current imaging methods for diagnosing BC are associated with limited sensitivity and specificity and modest positive predictive power. The recent progress in image analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) has created great promise to improve breast cancer (BC) diagnosis and subtype differentiation. In this case, novel quantitative computational methods, such as radiomics, have been developed to improve the sensitivity and specificity of early BC diagnosis and classification. The potential of radiomics in improving the diagnostic efficacy of imaging studies has been shown in several studies. In this review article, we discuss the radiomics workflow and current hand-crafted radiomics methods in the diagnosis and classification of BC based on most recent studies on different imaging modalities, e.g. MRI, mammography, contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM), ultrasound imaging, and digital breast tumosynthesis (DBT). We also discuss current challenges and potential strategies to improve the specificity and sensitivity of radiomics in breast cancer to help achieve a higher level of BC classification and diagnosis in the clinical setting. The growing field of AI incorporation with imaging information has opened a great opportunity to provide a higher level of care for BC patients.

This paper presents a deep learning-based approach for hourly power outage probability prediction within census tracts encompassing a utility company's service territory. Two distinct deep learning models, conditional Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and unconditional MLP, were developed to forecast power outage probabilities, leveraging a rich array of input features gathered from publicly available sources including weather data, weather station locations, power infrastructure maps, socio-economic and demographic statistics, and power outage records. Given a one-hour-ahead weather forecast, the models predict the power outage probability for each census tract, taking into account both the weather prediction and the location's characteristics. The deep learning models employed different loss functions to optimize prediction performance. Our experimental results underscore the significance of socio-economic factors in enhancing the accuracy of power outage predictions at the census tract level.

This paper introduces peer to peer (P2P) trading mechanisms based on decentralized Blockchain to facilitate retail electricity market for ever-increasing distributed energy resources (DERs). The Blockchain network supports fast and secure retail trading among DERs and facilitates a sustainable local P2P trading platform. In this decentralized Blockchain architecture no single entity or organization has control over the entire system rather all users collectively maintain control. The effectiveness of the proposed automated market design and optimization is simulated using different use case scenarios in an open source Blockchain Simulator and MATLAB. The results show the efficacy of the trading mechanism in achieving demand response through strategies such as peak load shaving, load shifting, and integration of DERs.

The evolving landscape of electric power networks, influenced by the integration of distributed energy resources require the development of novel power system monitoring and control architectures. This paper develops algorithm to monitor and detect anomalies of different parts of a power system that cannot be measured directly, by applying neighboring measurements and a dynamic probing technique in a distributed fashion. Additionally, the proposed method accurately assesses the severity of the anomaly. A decision-making algorithm is introduced to effectively penalize anomalous agents, ensuring vigilant oversight of the entire power system's functioning. Simulation results show the efficacy of algorithms in distributed anomaly detection and mitigation.

This paper introduces a new stochastic hybrid system (SHS) framework for contingency detection in modern power systems (MPS). The framework uses stochastic hybrid system representations in state space models to expand and facilitate capability of contingency detection. In typical microgrids (MGs), buses may contain various synchronous generators, renewable generators, controllable loads, battery systems, regular loads, etc. For development of SHS models in power systems, this paper introduces the concept of dynamic and non-dynamic buses. By converting a physical power grid into a virtual linearized state space model and representing contingencies as random switching of system structures and parameters, this paper formulates the contingency detection problem as a joint estimation problem of discrete event and continuous states in stochastic hybrid systems. This method offers unique advantages, including using common measurement signals on voltage and current synchrophasors to detect different types and locations of contingencies, avoiding expensive local direct fault measurements and detecting certain contingencies that cannot be directly measured. The method employs a small and suitably-designed probing signal to sustain the ability of persistent contingency detection. Joint estimation algorithms are presented with their proven convergence and reliability properties. Examples that use an IEEE 5-bus system demonstrate the main ideas and derivation steps. Simulation case studies on an IEEE 33-bus system are used for detecting transmission line faults and sensor interruptions.

This paper introduces a stochastic hybrid system (SHS) framework in state space model to capture sensor, communication, and system contingencies in modern power systems (MPS). Within this new framework, the paper concentrates on the development of state estimation methods and algorithms to provide reliable state estimation under randomly intermittent and noisy sensor data. MPSs employ diversified measurement devices for monitoring system operations that are subject to random measurement errors and rely on communication networks to transmit data whose channels encounter random packet loss and interruptions. The contingency and noise form two distinct and interacting stochastic processes that have a significant impact on state estimation accuracy and reliability. This paper formulates stochastic hybrid system models for MPSs, introduces coordinated observer design algorithms for state estimation, and establishes their convergence and reliability properties. A further study reveals a fundamental design tradeoff between convergence rates and steady-state error variances. Simulation studies on the IEEE 5-bus system and IEEE 33-bus system are used to illustrate the modeling methods, observer design algorithms, convergence properties, performance evaluations, and impact sensor system selections.

Accurate and ubiquitous localization is crucial for a variety of applications such as logistics, navigation, intelligent transport, monitoring, control, and also for the benefit of communications. Exploiting millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals in 5G and Beyond 5G systems can provide accurate localization with limited infrastructure. We consider the single base station (BS) localization problem and extend it to 3D position and 3D orientation estimation of an unsynchronized multi-antenna user equipment (UE), using downlink multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) signals. Through a Fisher information analysis, we show that the problem is often identifiable, provided that there is at least one multipath component in addition to the line-of-sight (LoS), even if the position of corresponding incidence point (IP) is a priori unknown. Subsequently, we pose a maximum likelihood (ML) estimation problem, to jointly estimate the 3D position and 3D orientation of the UE as well as several nuisance parameters (the UE clock offset and the positions of IPs corresponding to the multipath). The ML problem is a high-dimensional non-convex optimization problem over a product of Euclidean and non-Euclidean manifolds. To avoid complex exhaustive search procedures, we propose a geometric initial estimate of all parameters, which reduces the problem to a 1-dimensional search over a finite interval. Numerical results show the efficiency of the proposed ad-hoc estimation, whose gap to the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) is tightened using the ML estimation.

We consider the problem of estimating the 3D orientation of a user, using the downlink mmWave signals received from multiple base stations. We show that the received signals from several base stations, having known positions, can be used to estimate the unknown orientation of the user. We formulate the estimation problem as a maximum likelihood estimation problem in the the manifold of rotation matrices. In order to provide an initial estimate to solve the non-linear non-convex optimization problem, we resort to a least squares estimation problem that exploits the underlying geometry. Our numerical results show that the problem of orientation estimation can be solved when the signals from at least two base stations are received. We also provide the orientation lower error bound, showing a narrow gap between the performance of the proposed estimators and the bound.

The power system needs more transmission capacity to deal with the increasing integration of renewable energy resources. The battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are effective to enhance the grid capacity and relieve the transmission congestion. A comprehensive revenue analysis of BESSs is critical for market participants to install such systems in a market-based power system. Taking PJM as an example, this paper carries out a thorough revenue analysis for the entire system. Highly profitable nodes in the system are revealed and characterized for BESS participants. A comparison study of stationary and transportable BESSs shows the transportable energy storage can produce higher potential revenue in the energy and regulation markets. Based on the results of the revenue analysis and characterization of commercial pricing nodes, an optimal placement algorithm is proposed for finding the profitable sites for market participants to install BESSs in the system and the algorithm is validated with real PJM market data.

Purpose: To identify optimal classification methods for computed tomography (CT) radiomics-based preoperative prediction of clear cells renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) grade. Methods and material: Seventy one ccRCC patients were included in the study. Three image preprocessing techniques (Laplacian of Gaussian, wavelet filter, and discretization of the intensity values) were applied on tumor volumes. In total, 2530 radiomics features (tumor shape and size, intensity statistics, and texture) were extracted from each segmented tumor volume. Univariate analysis was performed to assess the association of each feature with the histological condition. In the case of multivariate analysis, the following was implemented: three feature selection including the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), students t-test and minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR) algorithms. These selected features were then used to construct three classification models (SVM, random forest, and logistic regression) to discriminate the high from low-grade ccRCC at nephrectomy. Lastly, multivariate model performance was evaluated on the bootstrapped validation cohort using the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: Univariate analysis demonstrated that among different image sets, 128 bin discretized images have statistically significant different (q-value < 0.05) texture parameters with a mean of AUC 0.74 (q-value < 0.05). The three ML-based classifier shows proficient discrimination of the high from low-grade ccRCC. The AUC was 0.78 in logistic regression, 0.62 in random forest, and 0.83 in SVM model, respectively. Conclusion: Radiomics features can be a useful and promising non-invasive method for preoperative evaluation of ccRCC Fuhrman grades. Key words: RCC, Radiomics, Machine Learning, Computed Tomography

We investigate a classification problem using multiple mobile agents capable of collecting (partial) pose-dependent observations of an unknown environment. The objective is to classify an image over a finite time horizon. We propose a network architecture on how agents should form a local belief, take local actions, and extract relevant features from their raw partial observations. Agents are allowed to exchange information with their neighboring agents to update their own beliefs. It is shown how reinforcement learning techniques can be utilized to achieve decentralized implementation of the classification problem by running a decentralized consensus protocol. Our experimental results on the MNIST handwritten digit dataset demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed framework.

Sparse representation can be described in high dimensions and used in many applications, including MRI imaging and radar imaging. In some cases, methods have been proposed to solve the high-dimensional sparse representation problem, but main solution is converting high-dimensional problem into one-dimension. Solving the equivalent problem had very high computational complexity. In this paper, the problem of high-dimensional sparse representation is formulated generally based on the theory of tensors, and a method for solving it based on SL0 (Smoothed Least zero-nor) is presented. Also, the uniqueness conditions for solution of the problem are considered in the high-dimensions. At the end of the paper, some numerical experiments are performed to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm and the results are presented.
