This paper proposes a novel semantics-aware autonomous exploration model to handle the long-standing issue: the mainstream RRT (Rapid-exploration Random Tree) based exploration models usually make the mobile robot switch frequently between different regions, leading to the excessively-repeated explorations for the same region. Our proposed semantics-aware model encourages a mobile robot to fully explore the current region before moving to the next region, which is able to avoid excessively-repeated explorations and make the exploration faster. The core idea of semantics-aware autonomous exploration model is optimizing the sampling point selection mechanism and frontier point evaluation function by considering the semantic information of regions. In addition, compared with existing autonomous exploration methods that usually construct the single-type or 2-3 types of maps, our model allows to construct four kinds of maps including point cloud map, occupancy grid map, topological map, and semantic map. To test the performance of our model, we conducted experiments in three simulated environments. The experiment results demonstrate that compared to Improved RRT, our model achieved 33.0% exploration time reduction and 39.3% exploration trajectory length reduction when maintaining >98% exploration rate.

Distributed computing is known as an emerging and efficient technique to support various intelligent services, such as large-scale machine learning. However, privacy leakage and random delays from straggling servers pose significant challenges. To address these issues, coded computing, a promising solution that combines coding theory with distributed computing, recovers computation tasks with results from a subset of workers. In this paper, we propose the adaptive privacy-preserving coded computing (APCC) strategy, which can adaptively provide accurate or approximated results according to the form of computation functions, so as to suit diverse types of computation tasks. We prove that APCC achieves complete data privacy preservation and demonstrate its optimality in terms of encoding rate, defined as the ratio between the computation loads of tasks before and after encoding. To further alleviate the straggling effect and reduce delay, we integrate hierarchical task partitioning and task cancellation into the coding design of APCC. The corresponding partitioning problems are formulated as mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems with the objective of minimizing task completion delay. We propose a low-complexity maximum value descent (MVD) algorithm to optimally solve these problems. Simulation results show that APCC can reduce task completion delay by a range of 20.3% to 47.5% when compared to other state-of-the-art benchmarks.

The introduction of 5G has changed the wireless communication industry. Whereas previous generations of cellular technology are mainly based on communication for people, the wireless industry is discovering that 5G may be an era of communications that is mainly focused on machine-to-machine communication. The application of Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication in factory automation is an area of great interest as it unlocks potential applications that traditional wired communications did not allow. In particular, the decrease in the inter-device distance has led to the discussion of coding schemes for these interference-filled channels. To meet the latency and accuracy requirements of URLLC, Non-orthogonal multiple access has been proposed but it comes with associated challenges. In order to combat the issue of interference, an enhanced version of Sliding window superposition coding has been proposed as a method of coding that yields performance gains in scenarios with high interference. This paper examines the abilities of this coding scheme in a broadcast network in 5G to evaluate its robustness in situations where interference is treated as noise in a factory automation setting. This work shows improvements of enhanced sliding window superposition coding over benchmark protocols in the high-reliability requirement regions of block error rates $\approx 10^{-6}$.

Saving rainforests is a key to halting adverse climate changes. In this paper, we introduce an innovative solution built on acoustic surveillance and machine learning technologies to help rainforest conservation. In particular, We propose new convolutional neural network (CNN) models for environmental sound classification and achieved promising preliminary results on two datasets, including a public audio dataset and our real rainforest sound dataset. The proposed audio classification models can be easily extended in an automated machine learning paradigm and integrated in cloud-based services for real world deployment.
