The performance of wireless communication systems is fundamentally constrained by random and uncontrollable wireless channels. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) has emerged as a promising solution to enhance wireless network performance by smartly reconfiguring the radio propagation environment. While significant research has been conducted on RIS-assisted wireless systems, this paper focuses specifically on the deployment of RIS in a wideband millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system to achieve maximum sum-rate. First, we derive the average user rate as well as the lower bound rate when the covariance of the channel follows the Wishart distribution. Based on the lower bound of users' rate, we propose a heuristic method that transforms the problem of optimizing the RIS's orientation into maximizing the number of users served by the RIS. Simulation results show that the proposed RIS deployment strategy can effectively improve the sum-rate. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed RIS deployment algorithm is only approximately 7.6\% lower on average than that of the exhaustive search algorithm.

Epilepsy is one of the most serious neurological diseases, affecting 1-2% of the world's population. The diagnosis of epilepsy depends heavily on the recognition of epileptic waves, i.e., disordered electrical brainwave activity in the patient's brain. Existing works have begun to employ machine learning models to detect epileptic waves via cortical electroencephalogram (EEG). However, the recently developed stereoelectrocorticography (SEEG) method provides information in stereo that is more precise than conventional EEG, and has been broadly applied in clinical practice. Therefore, we propose the first data-driven study to detect epileptic waves in a real-world SEEG dataset. While offering new opportunities, SEEG also poses several challenges. In clinical practice, epileptic wave activities are considered to propagate between different regions in the brain. These propagation paths, also known as the epileptogenic network, are deemed to be a key factor in the context of epilepsy surgery. However, the question of how to extract an exact epileptogenic network for each patient remains an open problem in the field of neuroscience. To address these challenges, we propose a novel model (BrainNet) that jointly learns the dynamic diffusion graphs and models the brain wave diffusion patterns. In addition, our model effectively aids in resisting label imbalance and severe noise by employing several self-supervised learning tasks and a hierarchical framework. By experimenting with the extensive real SEEG dataset obtained from multiple patients, we find that BrainNet outperforms several latest state-of-the-art baselines derived from time-series analysis.

This paper focuses on the analytical target cascading (ATC) based scenario decomposition method which applies to the stochastic OPF problem of distribution networks with high photovoltaic penetration. The original two-stage stochastic OPF model is decomposed into a master problem in the upper level and multiple subproblems in the lower level. This decomposition makes subproblems easier to be solved and can also effectively overcome the curse of dimensionality in the traditional scenario-based model. The global optimal solution can be obtained by only transferring some necessary coupling information between the upper and lower levels. Moreover, all the subproblems in the lower level can be solved in a parallel manner which improves the computational efficiency, in particular, for cases with a larger number of scenarios. Case studies on the IEEE 33-bus system and various larger systems verify the effectiveness and adaptability of the proposed algorithm.

The paper proposes a light-weighted stereo frustums matching module for 3D objection detection. The proposed framework takes advantage of a high-performance 2D detector and a point cloud segmentation network to regress 3D bounding boxes for autonomous driving vehicles. Instead of performing traditional stereo matching to compute disparities, the module directly takes the 2D proposals from both the left and the right views as input. Based on the epipolar constraints recovered from the well-calibrated stereo cameras, we propose four matching algorithms to search for the best match for each proposal between the stereo image pairs. Each matching pair proposes a segmentation of the scene which is then fed into a 3D bounding box regression network. Results of extensive experiments on KITTI dataset demonstrate that the proposed Siamese pipeline outperforms the state-of-the-art stereo-based 3D bounding box regression methods.

This paper studies a federated edge learning system, in which an edge server coordinates a set of edge devices to train a shared machine learning model based on their locally distributed data samples. During the distributed training, we exploit the joint communication and computation design for improving the system energy efficiency, in which both the communication resource allocation for global ML parameters aggregation and the computation resource allocation for locally updating MLparameters are jointly optimized. In particular, we consider two transmission protocols for edge devices to upload ML parameters to edge server, based on the non orthogonal multiple access and time division multiple access, respectively. Under both protocols, we minimize the total energy consumption at all edge devices over a particular finite training duration subject to a given training accuracy, by jointly optimizing the transmission power and rates at edge devices for uploading MLparameters and their central processing unit frequencies for local update. We propose efficient algorithms to optimally solve the formulated energy minimization problems by using the techniques from convex optimization. Numerical results show that as compared to other benchmark schemes, our proposed joint communication and computation design significantly improves the energy efficiency of the federated edge learning system, by properly balancing the energy tradeoff between communication and computation.

Mobile edge learning is an emerging technique that enables distributed edge devices to collaborate in training shared machine learning models by exploiting their local data samples and communication and computation resources. To deal with the straggler dilemma issue faced in this technique, this paper proposes a new device to device enabled data sharing approach, in which different edge devices share their data samples among each other over communication links, in order to properly adjust their computation loads for increasing the training speed. Under this setup, we optimize the radio resource allocation for both data sharing and distributed training, with the objective of minimizing the total training delay under fixed numbers of local and global iterations. Numerical results show that the proposed data sharing design significantly reduces the training delay, and also enhances the training accuracy when the data samples are non independent and identically distributed among edge devices.
