Wide-field calcium imaging (WFCI) that records neural calcium dynamics allows for identification of functional brain networks (FBNs) in mice that express genetically encoded calcium indicators. Estimating FBNs from WFCI data is commonly achieved by use of seed-based correlation (SBC) analysis and independent component analysis (ICA). These two methods are conceptually distinct and each possesses limitations. Recent success of unsupervised representation learning in neuroimage analysis motivates the investigation of such methods to identify FBNs. In this work, a novel approach referred as LSTM-AER, is proposed in which a long short-term memory (LSTM) autoencoder (AE) is employed to learn spatial-temporal latent embeddings from WFCI data, followed by an ordinary least square regression (R) to estimate FBNs. The goal of this study is to elucidate and illustrate, qualitatively and quantitatively, the FBNs identified by use of the LSTM-AER method and compare them to those from traditional SBC and ICA. It was observed that spatial FBN maps produced from LSTM-AER resembled those derived by SBC and ICA while better accounting for intra-subject variation, data from a single hemisphere, shorter epoch lengths and tunable number of latent components. The results demonstrate the potential of unsupervised deep learning-based approaches to identifying and map** FBNs.

The near-field radio communications (NFRC) will become crucial in 6G communication systems. The new mid-band (6-24 GHz) is the 6G potential candidate spectrum. In this paper, we will investigate the channel measurements and characteristics for the emerging NFRC. First, the near-field spherical-wave signal model is derived in detail, and the stationary interval (SI) division method is discussed based on the channel statistical properties. Then, the influence of line-of-sight (LOS) and obstructed-LOS (OLOS) environments on the near-field effects and spatial non-stationary (SnS) characteristic are explored based on the near-field channel measurements at 11-15 GHz band. We hope that this work will give some reference to the NFRC research.

With the further expansion of array element number and frequency bands, near-field effects will be more likely to occur in 6G communication systems. The near-field radio communications (NFRC) will become crucial in 6G communication systems. It is known that the channel research is very important for the development and performance evaluation of the communication systems. In this paper, we will systematically investigate the channel measurements and modeling for the emerging NFRC. First, the principle design of massive MIMO channel measurement platform are solved. Second, an indoor XL-MIMO channel measurement campaign with 1600 array elements is conducted, and the channel characteristics are extracted and validated in the near-field region. Then, the outdoor XL-MIMO channel measurement campaign with 320 array elements is conducted, and the channel characteristics are extracted and modeled from near-field to far-field (NF-FF) region. The spatial non-stationary characteristics of angular spread at the transmitting end are more important in modeling. We hope that this work will give some reference to the near-field and far-field research for 6G.

Background: Wide-field calcium imaging (WFCI) with genetically encoded calcium indicators allows for spatiotemporal recordings of neuronal activity in mice. When applied to the study of sleep, WFCI data are manually scored into the sleep states of wakefulness, non-REM (NREM) and REM by use of adjunct EEG and EMG recordings. However, this process is time-consuming, invasive and often suffers from low inter- and intra-rater reliability. Therefore, an automated sleep state classification method that operates on spatiotemporal WFCI data is desired. New Method: A hybrid network architecture consisting of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract spatial features of image frames and a bidirectional long short-term memory network (BiLSTM) with attention mechanism to identify temporal dependencies among different time points was proposed to classify WFCI data into states of wakefulness, NREM and REM sleep. Results: Sleep states were classified with an accuracy of 84% and Cohen's kappa of 0.64. Gradient-weighted class activation maps revealed that the frontal region of the cortex carries more importance when classifying WFCI data into NREM sleep while posterior area contributes most to the identification of wakefulness. The attention scores indicated that the proposed network focuses on short- and long-range temporal dependency in a state-specific manner. Comparison with Existing Method: On a 3-hour WFCI recording, the CNN-BiLSTM achieved a kappa of 0.67, comparable to a kappa of 0.65 corresponding to the human EEG/EMG-based scoring. Conclusions: The CNN-BiLSTM effectively classifies sleep states from spatiotemporal WFCI data and will enable broader application of WFCI in sleep.

We present VisionFM, a foundation model pre-trained with 3.4 million ophthalmic images from 560,457 individuals, covering a broad range of ophthalmic diseases, modalities, imaging devices, and demography. After pre-training, VisionFM provides a foundation to foster multiple ophthalmic artificial intelligence (AI) applications, such as disease screening and diagnosis, disease prognosis, subclassification of disease phenotype, and systemic biomarker and disease prediction, with each application enhanced with expert-level intelligence and accuracy. The generalist intelligence of VisionFM outperformed ophthalmologists with basic and intermediate levels in jointly diagnosing 12 common ophthalmic diseases. Evaluated on a new large-scale ophthalmic disease diagnosis benchmark database, as well as a new large-scale segmentation and detection benchmark database, VisionFM outperformed strong baseline deep neural networks. The ophthalmic image representations learned by VisionFM exhibited noteworthy explainability, and demonstrated strong generalizability to new ophthalmic modalities, disease spectrum, and imaging devices. As a foundation model, VisionFM has a large capacity to learn from diverse ophthalmic imaging data and disparate datasets. To be commensurate with this capacity, in addition to the real data used for pre-training, we also generated and leveraged synthetic ophthalmic imaging data. Experimental results revealed that synthetic data that passed visual Turing tests, can also enhance the representation learning capability of VisionFM, leading to substantial performance gains on downstream ophthalmic AI tasks. Beyond the ophthalmic AI applications developed, validated, and demonstrated in this work, substantial further applications can be achieved in an efficient and cost-effective manner using VisionFM as the foundation.

Recently, there has been increasing progress in end-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) architecture, which transcribes speech to text without any pre-trained alignments. One popular end-to-end approach is the hybrid Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) and attention (CTC/attention) based ASR architecture. However, how to deploy hybrid CTC/attention systems for online speech recognition is still a non-trivial problem. This article describes our proposed online hybrid CTC/attention end-to-end ASR architecture, which replaces all the offline components of conventional CTC/attention ASR architecture with their corresponding streaming components. Firstly, we propose stable monotonic chunk-wise attention (sMoChA) to stream the conventional global attention, and further propose monotonic truncated attention (MTA) to simplify sMoChA and solve the training-and-decoding mismatch problem of sMoChA. Secondly, we propose truncated CTC (T-CTC) prefix score to stream CTC prefix score calculation. Thirdly, we design dynamic waiting joint decoding (DWJD) algorithm to dynamically collect the predictions of CTC and attention in an online manner. Finally, we use latency-controlled bidirectional long short-term memory (LC-BLSTM) to stream the widely-used offline bidirectional encoder network. Experiments with LibriSpeech English and HKUST Mandarin tasks demonstrate that, compared with the offline CTC/attention model, our proposed online CTC/attention model improves the real time factor in human-computer interaction services and maintains its performance with moderate degradation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to provide the full-stack online solution for CTC/attention end-to-end ASR architecture.

Accurate and timely detection of plant stress is essential for yield protection, allowing better-targeted intervention strategies. Recent advances in remote sensing and deep learning have shown great potential for rapid non-invasive detection of plant stress in a fully automated and reproducible manner. However, the existing models always face several challenges: 1) computational inefficiency and the misclassifications between the different stresses with similar symptoms; and 2) the poor interpretability of the host-stress interaction. In this work, we propose a novel fast Fourier Convolutional Neural Network (FFDNN) for accurate and explainable detection of two plant stresses with similar symptoms (i.e. Wheat Yellow Rust And Nitrogen Deficiency). Specifically, unlike the existing CNN models, the main components of the proposed model include: 1) a fast Fourier convolutional block, a newly fast Fourier transformation kernel as the basic perception unit, to substitute the traditional convolutional kernel to capture both local and global responses to plant stress in various time-scale and improve computing efficiency with reduced learning parameters in Fourier domain; 2) Capsule Feature Encoder to encapsulate the extracted features into a series of vector features to represent part-to-whole relationship with the hierarchical structure of the host-stress interactions of the specific stress. In addition, in order to alleviate over-fitting, a photochemical vegetation indices-based filter is placed as pre-processing operator to remove the non-photochemical noises from the input Sentinel-2 time series.

The sixth generation (6G) mobile communications have attracted substantial attention in the global research community of information and communication technologies (ICT). 6G systems are expected to support not only extended 5G usage scenarios, but also new usage scenarios, such as integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), integrated artificial intelligence (AI) and communication, and communication and ubiquitous connectivity. To realize this goal, channel characteristics must be comprehensively studied and properly exploited, so as to promote the design, standardization, and optimization of 6G systems. In this paper, we first summarize the requirements and challenges in 6G channel research. Our focus is on channels for five promising technologies enabling 6G, including terahertz (THz), extreme MIMO (E-MIMO), ISAC, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), and space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN). Then, a survey of the progress of the 6G channel research regarding the above five promising technologies is presented in terms of the latest measurement campaigns, new characteristics, modeling methods, and research prospects. Moreover, a tutorial on the 6G channel simulations is presented. We introduce the BUPTCMG- 6G, a 6G link-level channel simulator, developed based on the ITU/3GPP 3D geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) methodology. The simulator supports the channel simulation of the aforementioned 6G potential technologies. To facilitate the use of the simulator, the tutorial encompasses the design framework, user guidelines, and application examples. This paper offers in-depth, hands-on insights into the best practices of channel measurements, modeling, and simulations for the evaluation of 6G technologies, the development of 6G standards, and the implementation and optimization of 6G systems.

There is often a trade-off between performance and latency in streaming automatic speech recognition (ASR). Traditional methods such as look-ahead and chunk-based methods, usually require information from future frames to advance recognition accuracy, which incurs inevitable latency even if the computation is fast enough. A causal model that computes without any future frames can avoid this latency, but its performance is significantly worse than traditional methods. In this paper, we propose corresponding revision strategies to improve the causal model. Firstly, we introduce a real-time encoder states revision strategy to modify previous states. Encoder forward computation starts once the data is received and revises the previous encoder states after several frames, which is no need to wait for any right context. Furthermore, a CTC spike position alignment decoding algorithm is designed to reduce time costs brought by the revision strategy. Experiments are all conducted on Librispeech datasets. Fine-tuning on the CTC-based wav2vec2.0 model, our best method can achieve 3.7/9.2 WERs on test-clean/other sets, which is also competitive with the chunk-based methods and the knowledge distillation methods.

In this paper, we propose a streaming any-to-many voice conversion based on fully non-autoregressive model, which includes a streaming transformer based acoustic model and a streaming vocoder. Streaming transformer based acoustic model is composed of a pre-trained encoder from streaming end-to-end based automatic speech recognition model and a decoder modified on FastSpeech blocks. Streaming vocoder is designed for streaming task with pseudo quadrature mirror filter bank and causal convolution. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves significant performance both in latency and conversion quality and can be real-time on CPU and GPU.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss worldwide. Restoration algorithms are developed to improve the readability of cataract fundus images in order to increase the certainty in diagnosis and treatment for cataract patients. Unfortunately, the requirement of annotation limits the application of these algorithms in clinics. This paper proposes a network to annotation-freely restore cataractous fundus images (ArcNet) so as to boost the clinical practicability of restoration. Annotations are unnecessary in ArcNet, where the high-frequency component is extracted from fundus images to replace segmentation in the preservation of retinal structures. The restoration model is learned from the synthesized images and adapted to real cataract images. Extensive experiments are implemented to verify the performance and effectiveness of ArcNet. Favorable performance is achieved using ArcNet against state-of-the-art algorithms, and the diagnosis of ocular fundus diseases in cataract patients is promoted by ArcNet. The capability of properly restoring cataractous images in the absence of annotated data promises the proposed algorithm outstanding clinical practicability.

Recently, Transformer has gained success in automatic speech recognition (ASR) field. However, it is challenging to deploy a Transformer-based end-to-end (E2E) model for online speech recognition. In this paper, we propose the Transformer-based online CTC/attention E2E ASR architecture, which contains the chunk self-attention encoder (chunk-SAE) and the monotonic truncated attention (MTA) based self-attention decoder (SAD). Firstly, the chunk-SAE splits the speech into isolated chunks. To reduce the computational cost and improve the performance, we propose the state reuse chunk-SAE. Sencondly, the MTA based SAD truncates the speech features monotonically and performs attention on the truncated features. To support the online recognition, we integrate the state reuse chunk-SAE and the MTA based SAD into online CTC/attention architecture. We evaluate the proposed online models on the HKUST Mandarin ASR benchmark and achieve a 23.66% character error rate (CER) with a 320 ms latency. Our online model yields as little as 0.19% absolute CER degradation compared with the offline baseline, and achieves significant improvement over our prior work on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based online E2E models.
