Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems may face a heavy computation burden since the sensory data needs to be further processed. This paper studies a novel system that integrates sensing, communication, and computation, aiming to provide services for different objectives efficiently. This system consists of a multi-antenna multi-functional base station (BS), an edge server, a target, and multiple singleantenna communication users. The BS needs to allocate the available resources to efficiently provide sensing, communication, and computation services. Due to the heavy service burden and limited power budget, the BS can partially offload the tasks to the nearby edge server instead of computing them locally. We consider the estimation of the target response matrix, a general problem in radar sensing, and utilize Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) as the corresponding performance metric. To tackle the non-convex optimization problem, we propose both semidefinite relaxation (SDR)-based alternating optimization and SDR-based successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithms to minimize the CRB of radar sensing while meeting the requirement of communication users and the need for task computing. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the optimal rankone solutions of both the alternating and SCA algorithms can be directly obtained via the solver or further constructed even when dealing with multiple functionalities. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can provide higher target estimation performance than state-of-the-art benchmarks while satisfying the communication and computation constraints.

Fluid antennas (FAs) and movable antennas (MAs) have drawn increasing attention in wireless communications recently due to their ability to create favorable channel conditions via local antenna movement within a confined region. In this letter, we advance their application for cognitive radio to facilitate efficient spectrum sharing between primary and secondary communication systems. In particular, we aim to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming and MA positions at a secondary transmitter (ST) to maximize the received signal power at a secondary receiver (SR) subject to the constraints on its imposed co-channel interference power with multiple primary receivers (PRs). However, such an optimization problem is difficult to be optimally solved due to the highly nonlinear functions of the received signal/interference power at the SR/all PRs in terms of the MA positions. To drive useful insights, we first perform theoretical analyses to unveil MAs' capability to achieve maximum-ratio transmission with the SR and effective interference mitigation for all PRs at the same time. To solve the MA position optimization problem, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed algorithms can significantly outperform the conventional fixed-position antennas (FPAs) and other baseline schemes.

Optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) offers a new and effective approach to resolving the line-of-sight blockage issue in visible light communication (VLC) by enabling redirection of light to bypass obstacles, thereby dramatically enhancing indoor VLC coverage and reliability. This article provides a comprehensive overview of OIRS for VLC, including channel modeling, design techniques, and open issues. First, we present the characteristics of OIRS-reflected channels and introduce two practical models, namely, optics model and association model, which are then compared in terms of applicable conditions, configuration methods, and channel parameters. Next, under the more practically appealing association model, we discuss the main design techniques for OIRS-aided VLC systems, including beam alignment, channel estimation, and OIRS reflection optimization. Finally, open issues are identified to stimulate future research in this area.

In this paper, we study an IRS-assisted coverage enhancement problem for a given region, aiming to optimize the passive reflection of the IRS for improving the average communication performance in the region by accounting for both deterministic and random channels in the environment. To this end, we first derive the closed-form expression of the average received signal power in terms of the deterministic base station (BS)-IRS-user cascaded channels over all user locations, and propose an IRS-aided coverage enhancement framework to facilitate the estimation of such deterministic channels for IRS passive reflection design. Specifically, to avoid the exorbitant overhead of estimating the cascaded channels at all possible user locations, a location selection method is first proposed to select only a set of typical user locations for channel estimation by exploiting the channel spatial correlation in the region. To estimate the deterministic cascaded channels at the selected user locations, conventional IRS channel estimation methods require additional pilot signals, which not only results in high system training overhead but also may not be compatible with the existing communication protocols. To overcome this issue, we further propose a single-layer neural network (NN)-enabled IRS channel estimation method in this paper, based on only the average received signal power measurements at each selected location corresponding to different IRS random training reflections, which can be offline implemented in current wireless systems. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed scheme can significantly improve the coverage performance of the target region and outperform the existing power-measurement-based IRS reflection designs.

Opinion dynamics models are important in understanding and predicting opinion formation processes within social groups. Although the weighted-averaging opinion-update mechanism is widely adopted as the micro-foundation of opinion dynamics, it bears a non-negligibly unrealistic implication: opinion attractiveness increases with opinion distance. Recently, the weighted-median mechanism has been proposed as a new microscopic mechanism of opinion exchange. Numerous advancements have been achieved regarding this new micro-foundation, from theoretical analysis to empirical validation, in a discrete-time asynchronous setup. However, the original discrete-time weighted-median model does not allow for "compromise behavior" in opinion exchanges, i.e., no intermediate opinions are created between disagreeing agents. To resolve this problem, this paper propose a novel continuous-time weighted-median opinion dynamics model, in which agents' opinions move towards the weighted-medians of their out-neighbors' opinions. It turns out that the proof methods for the original discrete-time asynchronous model are no longer applicable to the analysis of the continuous-time model. In this paper, we first establish the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the continuous-time weighted-median opinion dynamics by showing that the weighted-median map** is contractive on any graph. We also characterize the set of all the equilibria. Then, by leveraging a new LaSalle invariance principle argument, we prove the convergence of the continuous-time weighted-median model for any initial condition and derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence to consensus.

Optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) has attracted increasing attention due to its capability of overcoming signal blockages in visible light communication (VLC), an emerging technology for the next-generation advanced transceivers. However, current works on OIRS predominantly assume known channel state information (CSI), which is essential to practical OIRS configuration. To bridge such a gap, this paper proposes a new and customized channel estimation protocol for OIRSs under the alignment-based channel model. Specifically, we first unveil OIRS spatial and temporal coherence characteristics and derive the coherence distance and the coherence time in closed form. Next, to achieve fast beam alignment over different coherence time, we propose to dynamically tune the rotational angles of the OIRS reflecting elements following a geometric optics-based non-uniform codebook. Given the above beam alignment, we propose an efficient joint space-time sampling-based algorithm to estimate the OIRS channel. In particular, we divide the OIRS into multiple subarrays based on the coherence distance and sequentially estimate their associated CSI, followed by a spacetime interpolation to retrieve full CSI for other non-aligned transceiver antennas. Numerical results validate our theoretical analyses and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed OIRS channel estimation scheme as compared to other benchmark schemes.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems traditionally presuppose that sensing and communication (S&C) channels remain approximately constant during their coherence time. However, a "DISCO" reconfigurable intelligent surface (DRIS), i.e., an illegitimate RIS with random, time-varying reflection properties that acts like a "disco ball," introduces a paradigm shift that enables active channel aging more rapidly during the channel coherence time. In this letter, we investigate the impact of DISCO jamming attacks launched by a DRISbased fully-passive jammer (FPJ) on an ISAC system. Specifically, an ISAC problem formulation and a corresponding waveform optimization are presented in which the ISAC waveform design considers the trade-off between the S&C performance and is formulated as a Pareto optimization problem. Moreover, a theoretical analysis is conducted to quantify the impact of DISCO jamming attacks. Numerical results are presented to evaluate the S&C performance under DISCO jamming attacks and to validate the derived theoretical analysis.

Fluid antennas (FAs) and movable antennas (MAs) have emerged as promising technologies in wireless communications, which offer the flexibility to improve channel conditions by adjusting transmit/receive antenna positions within a spatial region. In this letter, we focus on an MA-enhanced multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system, aiming to optimize the positions of multiple transmit MAs to maximize the received signal power. Unlike the prior works on continuously searching for the optimal MA positions, we propose to sample the transmit region into discrete points, such that the continuous antenna position optimization problem is transformed to a discrete sampling point selection problem based on the point-wise channel information. However, such a point selection problem is combinatory and challenging to be optimally solved. To tackle this challenge, we ingeniously recast it as an equivalent fixed-hop shortest path problem in graph theory and propose a customized algorithm to solve it optimally in polynomial time. To further reduce the complexity, a linear-time sequential update algorithm is also proposed to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can yield considerable performance gains over the conventional fixed-position antennas with/without antenna selection.

System identification through learning approaches is emerging as a promising strategy for understanding and simulating dynamical systems, which nevertheless faces considerable difficulty when confronted with power systems modeled by differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). This paper introduces a neural network (NN) framework for effectively learning and simulating solution trajectories of DAEs. The proposed framework leverages the synergy between Implicit Runge-Kutta (IRK) time-step** schemes tailored for DAEs and NNs (including a differential NN (DNN)). The framework enforces an NN to cooperate with the algebraic equation of DAEs as hard constraints and is suitable for the identification of the ordinary differential equation (ODE)-modeled dynamic equation of DAEs using an existing penalty-based algorithm. Finally, the paper demonstrates the efficacy and precision of the proposed NN through the identification and simulation of solution trajectories for the considered DAE-modeled power system.

Both passive and active intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) can be deployed in complex environments to enhance wireless network coverage by creating multiple blockage-free cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) links. In this paper, we study a multi-passive/active-IRS (PIRS/AIRS) aided wireless network with a multi-antenna base station (BS) in a given region. First, we divide the region into multiple non-overlap** cells, each of which may contain one candidate location that can be deployed with a single PIRS or AIRS. Then, we show several trade-offs between minimizing the total IRS deployment cost and enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance over all cells via direct/cascaded LoS transmission with the BS. To reconcile these trade-offs, we formulate a joint multi-PIRS/AIRS deployment problem to select an optimal subset of all candidate locations for deploying IRS and also optimize the number of passive/active reflecting elements deployed at each selected location to satisfy a given SNR target over all cells, such that the total deployment cost is minimized. However, due to the combinatorial optimization involved, the formulated problem is difficult to be solved optimally. To tackle this difficulty, we first optimize the reflecting element numbers with given PIRS/AIRS deployed locations via sequential refinement, followed by a partial enumeration to determine the PIRS/AIRS locations. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm achieves better cost-performance trade-offs than other baseline deployment strategies.

Traditional methods for estimating IRS cascaded channels are usually based on the additional pilot signals received at the BS/users, which increase the system training overhead and also may not be compatible with the current communication protocols. To tackle this challenge, we propose in this paper a new single-layer neural network (NN)-enabled IRS channel estimation method based on only the knowledge of users' individual received signal power measurements corresponding to different IRS random training reflections, which are easily accessible in current wireless systems. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation method, we design the IRS reflection for data transmission based on the estimated cascaded channels in an IRS-aided multiuser communication system. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can be densely deployed in complex environments to create cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) links between base stations (BSs) and users, which significantly enhance the signal coverage. In this paper, we consider the wireless power transfer (WPT) from a multi-antenna BS to multiple energy users (EUs) by exploiting the signal beam routing via multi-IRS reflections. First, we present a baseline beam routing scheme with each IRS serving at most one EU, where the BS transmits wireless power to all EUs simultaneously while the signals to different EUs undergo disjoint sets of multi-IRS reflection paths. Under this setup, we aim to tackle the joint beam routing and resource allocation optimization problem by jointly optimizing the reflection paths for all EUs, the active/passive beamforming at the BS/each involved IRS, as well as the BS's power allocation for different EUs to maximize the minimum received signal power among all EUs. Next, to further improve the WPT performance, we propose two new beam routing schemes, namely dynamic beam routing and subsurface-based beam routing, where each IRS can serve multiple EUs via different time slots and different subsurfaces, respectively. In particular, we prove that dynamic beam routing outperforms subsurface-based beam routing in terms of minimum harvested power among all EUs. In addition, we show that the optimal performance of dynamic beam routing is achieved by assigning all EUs with orthogonal time slots for WPT. A clique-based optimization approach is also proposed to solve the joint beam routing and resource allocation problems for the baseline beam routing and proposed dynamic beam routing schemes. Numerical results are finally presented, which demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed dynamic beam routing scheme to the baseline scheme.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been widely recognized as an efficient technique to reconfigure the electromagnetic environment in favor of wireless communication performance. In this paper, we propose a new application of IRS for device-free target sensing via joint location and orientation estimation. In particular, different from the existing works that use IRS as an additional anchor node for localization/sensing, we consider mounting IRS on the sensing target, whereby estimating the IRS's location and orientation as that of the target by leveraging IRS's controllable signal reflection. To this end, we first propose a tensor-based method to acquire essential angle information between the IRS and the sensing transmitter as well as a set of distributed sensing receivers. Next, based on the estimated angle information, we formulate two optimization problems to estimate the location and orientation of the IRS/target, respectively, and obtain the locally optimal solutions to them by invoking two iterative algorithms, namely, gradient descent method and manifold optimization. In particular, we show that the orientation estimation problem admits a closed-form solution in a special case that usually holds in practice. Furthermore, theoretical analysis is conducted to draw essential insights into the proposed sensing system design and performance. Simulation results verify our theoretical analysis and demonstrate that the proposed methods can achieve high estimation accuracy which is close to the theoretical bound.

Mechanistic and tractable mathematical models play a key role in understanding how social influence shapes public opinions. Recently, a weighted-median mechanism has been proposed as a new micro-foundation of opinion dynamics and validated via experimental data. Numerical studies also indicate that this new mechanism recreates some non-trivial real-world features of opinion evolution. In this paper, we conduct a thorough theoretical analysis of the weighted-median opinion dynamics. We fully characterize the set of all equilibria, and we establish the almost-sure finite-time convergence for any initial condition. Moreover, we prove a necessary and sufficient graph-theoretic condition for the almost-sure convergence to consensus, as well as a sufficient graph-theoretic condition for almost-sure persistent dissensus. It turns out that the weighted-median opinion dynamics, despite its simplicity in form, exhibit rich dynamical behavior that depends on some delicate network structures. To complement our sufficient conditions for almost-sure dissensus, we further prove that, given the influence network, determining whether the system almost surely achieves persistent dissensus is NP-hard, which reflects the complexity the network topology contributes to opinion evolution.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can be densely deployed in complex environment to create cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) paths between multiple base stations (BSs) and users via tunable IRS reflections, thereby significantly enhancing the coverage performance of wireless networks. To achieve this goal, it is vital to optimize the deployed locations of BSs and IRSs in the wireless network, which is investigated in this paper. Specifically, we divide the coverage area of the network into multiple non-overlap** cells and decide whether to deploy a BS/IRS in each cell given a total number of BSs/IRSs available. We show that to ensure the network coverage/communication performance, i.e., each cell has a direct/cascaded LoS path with at least one BS, as well as such LoS paths have the average number of IRS reflections less than a given threshold, there is a fundamental trade-off with the deployment cost or the number of BSs/IRSs needed. To optimally characterize this trade-off, we formulate a joint BS and IRS deployment problem based on graph theory, which, however, is difficult to be optimally solved due to the combinatorial optimization involved. To circumvent this difficulty, we first consider a simplified problem with given BS deployment and propose the optimal as well as an efficient suboptimal IRS deployment solution to it, by applying the branch-and-bound method and iteratively removing IRSs from the candidate locations, respectively. Next, an efficient sequential update algorithm is proposed for solving the joint BS and IRS deployment problem. Numerical results are provided to show the efficacy of the proposed design approach and optimization algorithms for the joint BS and IRS deployment. The trade-off between the network coverage performance and the number of deployed BSs/IRSs with different cost ratios is also unveiled.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique to enhance wireless communication performance cost effectively. The existing literature has mainly considered IRS being deployed near user terminals to improve their performance. However, this approach may incur a high cost if IRSs need to be densely deployed in the network to cater to random user locations. To avoid such high deployment cost, in this paper we consider a new IRS aided wireless network architecture, where IRSs are deployed in the vicinity of each base station (BS) to assist in its communications with distributed users regardless of their locations. Besides significantly enhancing IRSs' signal coverage, this scheme helps reduce the IRS associated channel estimation overhead as compared to conventional user-side IRSs, by exploiting the nearly static BS-IRS channels over short distance. For this scheme, we propose a new two stage transmission protocol to achieve IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization for uplink data transmission efficiently. In addition, we propose effective methods for solving the user IRS association problem based on long term channel knowledge and the selected user IRS BS cascaded channel estimation problem. Finally, all IRSs' passive reflections are jointly optimized with the BS's multi-antenna receive combining to maximize the minimum achievable rate among all users for data transmission. Numerical results show that the proposed co site IRS empowered BS scheme can achieve significant performance gains over the conventional BS without co site IRS and existing schemes for IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization, thus enabling an appealing low cost and high performance BS design for future wireless networks.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can be densely deployed in wireless networks to significantly enhance the communication channels. In this letter, we consider the downlink transmission from a multi-antenna base station (BS) to a single-antenna user, by exploiting the cooperative passive beamforming (CPB) and line-of-sight (LoS) path diversity gains of multi-IRS signal reflection. Unlike existing works where only one single multi-IRS reflection path from the BS to user is selected, we propose a new and more general multi-path beam routing scheme. Specifically, the BS sends the user's information signal via multiple orthogonal active beams (termed as active beam splitting), which point towards different IRSs. Then, these beamed signals are subsequently reflected by selected IRSs via their CPB in different paths, and finally coherently combined at the user's receiver (thus named {\it \textbf{passive beam combining}}). For this scheme, we formulate a new multi-path beam routing design problem to jointly optimize the number of IRS reflection paths, the selected IRSs for each of the reflection paths, the active/passive beamforming at the BS/each selected IRS, as well as the BS's power allocation over different active beams, so as to maximize the received signal power at the user. To solve this challenging problem, we first derive the optimal BS/IRS beamforming and BS power allocation for a given set of reflection paths. The clique-based approach in graph theory is then applied to solve the remaining multi-path selection problem efficiently. Simulation results show that our proposed multi-path beam routing scheme significantly outperforms its conventional single-path beam routing special case.

This paper is to consider the problems of estimation and recognition from the perspective of sigma-max inference (probability-possibility inference), with a focus on discovering whether some of the unknown quantities involved could be more faithfully modeled as fuzzy uncertainty. Two related key issues are addressed: 1) the random-fuzzy dual interpretation of unknown quantity being estimated; 2) the principle of selecting sigma-max operator for practical problems, such as estimation and recognition. Our perspective, conceived from definitions of randomness and fuzziness, is that continuous unknown quantity involved in estimation with inaccurate prior should be more appropriately modeled as randomness and handled by sigma inference; whereas discrete unknown quantity involved in recognition with insufficient (and inaccurate) prior could be better modeled as fuzziness and handled by max inference. The philosophy was demonstrated by an updated version of the well-known interacting multiple model (IMM) filter, for which the jump Markovian System is reformulated as a hybrid uncertainty system, with continuous state evolution modeled as usual as model-conditioned stochastic system and discrete mode transitions modeled as fuzzy system by a possibility (instead of probability) transition matrix, and hypotheses mixing is conducted by using the operation of "max" instead of "sigma". For our example of maneuvering target tracking using simulated data from both a short-range fire control radar and a long-range surveillance radar, the updated IMM filter shows significant improvement over the classic IMM filter, due to its peculiarity of hard decision of system model and a faster response to the transition of discrete mode.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a key enabling technology to realize smart and reconfigurable radio environment for wireless communications, by digitally controlling the signal reflection via a large number of passive reflecting elements in real-time. Different from conventional wireless communication techniques that only adapt to but have no or limited control over dynamic wireless channels, IRS provides a new and cost-effective means to combat the wireless channel impairments in a proactive manner. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique for wireless communication networks. By dynamically tuning the reflection amplitudes/phase shifts of a large number of passive elements, IRS enables flexible wireless channel control and configuration, and thereby enhances the wireless signal transmission rate and reliability significantly. Despite the vast literature on designing and optimizing assorted IRS-aided wireless systems, prior works have mainly focused on enhancing wireless links with single signal reflection only by one or multiple IRSs, which may be insufficient to boost the wireless link capacity under some harsh propagation conditions (e.g., indoor environment with dense blockages/obstructions). This issue can be tackled by employing two or more IRSs to assist each wireless link and jointly exploiting their single as well as multiple signal reflections over them. However, the resultant double-/multi-IRS aided wireless systems face more complex design issues as well as new practical challenges for implementation as compared to the conventional single-IRS counterpart, in terms of IRS reflection optimization, channel acquisition, as well as IRS deployment and association/selection. As such, a new paradigm for designing multi-IRS cooperative passive beamforming and joint active/passive beam routing arises which calls for innovative design approaches and optimization methods. In this paper, we give a tutorial overview of multi-IRS aided wireless networks, with an emphasis on addressing the new challenges due to multi-IRS signal reflection and routing. Moreover, we point out important directions worthy of research and investigation in the future.

Terahertz (THz) communications with a frequency band $0.1-10$ THz are envisioned as a promising solution to future high-speed wireless communication. Although with tens of gigahertz available bandwidth, THz signals suffer from severe free-spreading loss and molecular-absorption loss, which limit the wireless transmission distance. To compensate for the propagation loss, the ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (UM-MIMO) can be applied to generate a high-gain directional beam by beamforming technologies. In this paper, a review of beamforming technologies for THz UM-MIMO systems is provided. Specifically, we first present the system model of THz UM-MIMO and identify its channel parameters and architecture types. Then, we illustrate the basic principles of beamforming via UM-MIMO and discuss the far-field and near-field assumptions in THz UM-MIMO. Moreover, an important beamforming strategy in THz band, i.e., beam training, is introduced wherein the beam training protocol and codebook design approaches are summarized. The intelligent-reflecting-surface (IRS)-assisted joint beamforming and multi-user beamforming in THz UM-MIMO systems are studied, respectively. The spatial-wideband effect and frequency-wideband effect in the THz beamforming are analyzed and the corresponding solutions are provided. Further, we present the corresponding fabrication techniques and illuminate the emerging applications benefiting from THz beamforming. Open challenges and future research directions on THz UM-MIMO systems are finally highlighted.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technology to enhance the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless communications cost-effectively. This letter considers a new multi-IRS aided wireless network where a cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) link is established between the base station (BS) and a remote user by leveraging the multi-hop signal reflection of selected IRSs. As compared to the conventional single-/double-hop IRS system, multi-hop IRS system provides more pronounced path diversity and cooperative passive beamforming gains, especially in the environment with dense obstacles. However, a more challenging joint active/passive beamforming and multi-hop beam routing problem also arises for maximizing the end-to-end channel gain. Furthermore, the number of IRS-associated channel coefficients increases drastically with the number of IRS hops. To tackle the above issues, in this letter we propose a new and efficient beam training based solution by considering the use of practical codebook-based BS/IRS active/passive beamforming without the need of explicit channel estimation. Instead of exhaustively or sequentially searching over all combinations of active and passive beam patterns for each beam route, a distributed beam training scheme is proposed to reduce the complexity, by exploiting the (nearly) time-invariant BS-IRS and inter-IRS channels and the cooperative training among the BS and IRSs' controllers. Simulation results show that our proposed design achieves the end-to-end channel gain close to that of the sequential beam search, but at a much lower training overhead and complexity.

Structural balance theory describes stable configurations of topologies of signed interpersonal appraisal networks. Existing models explaining the convergence of appraisal networks to structural balance either diverge in finite time, or could get stuck in jammed states, or converge to only complete graphs. In this paper, we study the open problem how steady non-all-to-all structural balance emerges via local dynamics of interpersonal appraisals. We first compare two well-justified definitions of structural balance for general non-all-to-all graphs, i.e., the triad-wise structural balance and the two-faction structural balance, and thoroughly study their relations. Secondly, based on three widely adopted sociological mechanisms: the symmetry mechanism, the influence mechanism, and the homophily mechanism, we propose two simple models of gossip-like appraisal dynamics, the symmetry-influence-homophily (SIH) dynamics and the symmetry-influence-opinion-homophily (SIOH) dynamics. In these models, the appraisal network starting from any initial condition almost surely achieves non-all-to-all triad-wise and two-faction structural balance in finite time respectively. Moreover, the SIOH dynamics capture the co-evolution of interpersonal appraisals and individuals' opinions. Regarding the theoretical contributions, we show that the equilibrium set of the SIH (SIOH resp.) dynamics corresponds to the set of all the possible triad-wise (two-faction resp.) structural balance configurations of the appraisal networks. Moreover, we prove that, for any initial condition, the appraisal networks in the SIH (SIOH resp.) dynamics almost surely achieve triad-wise (two-faction resp.) structural balance in finite time. Numerical studies of the SIH dynamics also imply some insightful take-home messages on whether multilateral relations reduce or exacerbate conflicts.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been deemed as a transformative technology to achieve smart and reconfigurable environment for wireless communication. This letter studies a new IRS-aided communication system, where multiple IRSs assist in the communication between a multi-antenna base station (BS) and a remote single-antenna user by multi-hop signal reflection. Specifically, by exploiting the line-of-sight (LoS) link between nearby IRSs, a multi-hop cascaded LoS link between the BS and user is established where a set of IRSs are selected to successively reflect the BS's signal, so that the received signal power at the user is maximized. To tackle this new problem, we first present the closed-form solutions for the optimal active and cooperative passive beamforming at the BS and selected IRSs, respectively, for a given beam route. Then, we derive the end-to-end channel power, which unveils a fundamental trade-off in the optimal beam routing design between maximizing the multiplicative passive beamforming gain and minimizing the multi-reflection path loss. To reconcile this trade-off, we recast the IRS selection and beam routing problem as an equivalent shortest simple-path problem in graph theory and solve it optimally. Numerical results show significant performance gains of the proposed algorithm over benchmark schemes and also draw useful insights into the optimal beam routing design.

Tackling complex team problems requires understanding each team member's skills in order to devise a task assignment maximizing the team performance. This paper proposes a novel quantitative model describing the decentralized process by which individuals in a team learn who has what abilities, while concurrently assigning tasks to each of the team members. In the model, the appraisal network represents team member's evaluations of one another and each team member chooses their own workload. The appraisals and workload assignment change simultaneously: each member builds their own local appraisal of neighboring members based on the performance exhibited on previous tasks, while the workload is redistributed based on the current appraisal estimates. We show that the appraisal states can be reduced to a lower dimension due to the presence of conserved quantities associated to the cycles of the appraisal network. Building on this, we provide rigorous results characterizing the ability, or inability, of the team to learn each other's skill and thus converge to an allocation maximizing the team performance. We complement our analysis with extensive numerical experiments.

Aerial-ground interference is the main obstacle to achieving high spectral efficiency in cellular networks with both traditional terrestrial users and new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) users. Due to their strong line-of-sight (LoS) channels with the ground, UAVs could cause/suffer severe interference to/from a large number of non-associated but co-channel base stations (BSs) in their uplink/downlink communications. In this letter, we propose a new cooperative interference cancellation (CIC) scheme for the UAV's uplink communication to mitigate its strong interference to co-channel BSs, which requires only local cooperation between each co-channel BS and its adjacent hel** BSs. Specifically, the hel** BSs without serving any users in the UAV's communication channel quantize and forward their received signals from the UAV to their aided co-channel BS, which then processes the quantized signals jointly with its own received signal to decode its served terrestrial user's message via canceling the UAV's signal by linear/nonlinear interference cancellation techniques (ICTs). We derive the achievable rates of the proposed CIC scheme with different ICTs as a function of the UAV's transmit power and rate, and thereby unveil the conditions under which the proposed CIC scheme outperforms the existing CIC scheme based on the decode-and-forward (DF) operation of the hel** BSs.

In social systems, the evolution of interpersonal appraisals and individual opinions are not independent processes but intertwine with each other. Despite extensive studies on both opinion dynamics and appraisal dynamics separately, no previous work has ever combined these two processes together. In this paper, we propose a novel and intuitive model on the interplay between homophily-based appraisal dynamics and influence-based opinion dynamics. We assume that individuals' opinions are updated via the influence network constructed from their interpersonal appraisals, which are in turn updated based on the individual opinions via the homophily mechanism. By theoretical analysis, we characterize the set of equilibria and some transient behavior of our model. Moreover, we establish the equivalence among the convergence of the appraisal network to social balance, the modulus consensus of individual opinions, and the non-vanishing appraisals. Monte Carlo validations further show that the non-vanishing appraisals condition holds for generic initial conditions. Compared with previous works that explain the emergence of social balance via person-to-person homophily mechanism, our model provides an alternative explanation in terms of the person-to-entity homophily mechanism. In addition, our model also describes how individuals' opinions on multiple irrelevant issues become correlated and converge to modulus consensus over time-varying influence networks.

We propose a novel store-then-amplify-and-forward (SAF) relaying protocol for the UAV to exploit its mobility jointly with the low-complexity AF relaying. Specifically, the received signal from the source is first stored in a buffer at the UAV, then amplified and forwarded to the destination when the UAV flies closer to the destination. With this new SAF protocol, we aim to maximize the throughput of the UAV-enabled relaying system by jointly optimizing the source/UAV transmit power and the UAV trajectory, as well as the time-slot pairing for each data packet received and forwarded by the UAV. As this problem is a non-convex mixed integer optimization problem that is difficult to solve, we propose an efficient algorithm for obtaining a suboptimal solution for it by applying the techniques of Hungary algorithm, alternating optimization and successive convex approximation. Numerical results show that the proposed mobile SAF relaying outperforms the conventional AF relaying without signal storing.

Aerial-ground interference mitigation has been deemed as the main challenge in realizing cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. Due to the line-of-sight (LoS)-dominant air-ground channels, the UAV generates/suffers much stronger interference to/from cellular base stations (BSs) over a much larger region in its uplink/downlink communication, as compared to the terrestrial users. As a result, conventional inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) techniques catered for terrestrial networks become ineffective in mitigating the more severe UAV-induced interference. To deal with this new challenge, this letter introduces a cognitive radio based solution by treating the UAV and terrestrial users as secondary and primary users in the network, respectively. In particular, the LoS channels with terrestrial BSs/users endow the UAV with a powerful spectrum sensing capability for detecting the terrestrial signals over a much larger region than its serving BS. By exploiting this unique feature, we propose a new UAV-sensing-assisted ICIC design for both the UAV downlink and uplink communications. Specifically, the UAV senses its received interference and the transmissions of terrestrial users in the downlink and uplink, respectively, over the resource blocks (RBs) available at its serving BS to assist its RB allocation to the UAV for avoiding the interference with co-channel terrestrial communications. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed UAV-assisted ICIC outperforms the conventional terrestrial ICIC by engaging the neighboring BSs for cooperation only.

To identify the main mechanisms underlying complex opinion formation processes in social systems, researchers have long been exploring simple mechanistic mathematical models. Most existing opinion dynamics models are built on a common micro-foundation, i.e., the weighted-averaging opinion update. However, we argue that this universally-adopted mechanism features a non-negligible unrealistic feature, which brings unnecessary difficulties in seeking a proper balance between model complexity and predictive power. In this paper, we propose the weighted-median mechanism as a new micro-foundation of opinion dynamics, which, with minimal assumptions, fundamentally resolves the inherent unrealistic feature of the weighted-averaging mechanism. Derived from the cognitive dissonance theory in psychology, the weighted-median mechanism is supported by online experiment data and broadens the applicability of opinion dynamics models to multiple-choice issues with ordered discrete options. Moreover, the weighted-median mechanism, despite being the simplest in form, captures various non-trivial real-world features of opinion evolution, while some widely-studied averaging-based models fail to.

Compressed sensing based magnetic resonance imaging (CS-MRI) provides an efficient way to reduce scanning time of MRI. Recently deep learning has been introduced into CS-MRI to further improve the image quality and shorten reconstruction time. In this paper, we propose an efficient structurally strengthened Generative Adversarial Network, termed ESSGAN, for reconstructing MR images from highly under-sampled k-space data. ESSGAN consists of a structurally strengthened generator (SG) and a discriminator. In SG, we introduce strengthened connections (SCs) to improve the utilization of the feature maps between the proposed strengthened convolutional autoencoders (SCAEs), where each SCAE is a variant of a typical convolutional autoencoder. In addition, we creatively introduce a residual in residual block (RIRB) to SG. RIRB increases the depth of SG, thus enhances feature expression ability of SG. Moreover, it can give the encoder blocks and the decoder blocks richer texture features. To further reduce artifacts and preserve more image details, we introduce an enhanced structural loss to SG. ESSGAN can provide higher image quality with less model parameters than the state-of-the-art deep learning-based methods at different undersampling rates of different subsampling masks, and reconstruct a 256*256 MR image in tens of milliseconds.

The line-of-sight dominant air-ground channels have posed critical interference issues in cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. In this paper, we propose a new base station (BS) cooperative beamforming (CB) technique for the cellular downlink to mitigate the strong interference caused by the co-channel terrestrial transmissions to the UAV. Besides the conventional CB by cooperatively transmitting the UAV's message, the serving BSs of the UAVs exploit a novel interference transmission scheme to effectively suppress the terrestrial interference to the UAV. Specifically, the co-channel terrestrial users' messages are shared with the UAV's serving BSs and transmitted via CB to cancel their resultant interference at the UAV. To balance between the CB gains for UAV signal enhancement and interference cancellation, we aim to maximize the UAV's receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio by jointly optimizing the power allocations at all of its serving BSs for transmitting the UAV's and co-channel terrestrial users' messages. First, we derive the closed-form optimal solution to this problem in a special case and draw useful insights. Then, we propose an algorithm to solve the problem optimally in the general case. As the optimal solution requires centralized implementation with exorbitant message/channel information exchanges among the BSs, we further propose a distributed algorithm that is amenable to practical implementation, based on a new divide-and-conquer approach, whereby each co-channel BS divides its perceived interference to the UAV into multiple portions, each to be canceled by a different serving BS of the UAV with its best effort. Numerical results show that the proposed centralized and distributed CB schemes with interference transmission and cancellation (ITC) can both significantly outperform the conventional CB without applying ITC.

The Deffuant-Weisbuch (DW) model is a bounded-confidence opinion dynamics model that has attracted much recent interest. Despite its simplicity and appeal, the DW model has proved technically hard to analyze and its most basic convergence properties, easy to observe numerically, are only conjectures. This paper solves the convergence problem for the heterogeneous DW model with the weighting factor not less than $1/2$. We establish that, for any positive confidence bounds and initial values, the opinion of each agent will converge to a limit value almost surely, and the convergence rate is exponential in mean square. Moreover, we show that the limiting opinions of any two agents either are the same or have a distance larger than the confidence bounds of the two agents. Finally, we provide some sufficient conditions for the heterogeneous DW model to reach consensus.

In this paper, we analyze the instability of continuous-time Markov jump linear systems. Although there exist several effective criteria for the stability of Markov jump linear systems, there is a lack of methodologies for verifying their instability. In this paper, we present a novel criterion for the exponential mean instability of Markov jump linear systems. The main tool of our analysis is an auxiliary Markov jump linear system, which results from taking the Kronecker products of the given system matrices and a set of appropriate matrix weights. We furthermore show that the problem of finding matrix weights for tighter instability analysis can be transformed to the spectral optimization of an affine matrix family, which can be efficiently performed by gradient-based non-smooth optimization algorithms. We confirm the effectiveness of the proposed methods by numerical examples.

LaSalle invariance principle was originally proposed in the 1950's and has become a fundamental mathematical tool in the area of dynamical systems and control. In both theoretical research and engineering practice, discrete-time dynamical systems have been at least as extensively studied as continuous-time systems. For example, model predictive control is typically studied in discrete-time via Lyapunov methods. However, there is a peculiar absence in the standard literature of standard treatments of Lyapunov functions and LaSalle invariance principle for discrete-time nonlinear systems. Most of the textbooks on nonlinear dynamical systems focus only on continuous-time systems. In Chapter 1 of the book by LaSalle [11], the author establishes the LaSalle invariance principle for difference equation systems. However, all the useful lemmas in [11] are given in the form of exercises with no proof provided. In this document, we provide the proofs of all the lemmas proposed in [11] that are needed to derive the main theorem on the LaSalle invariance principle for discrete-time dynamical systems. We organize all the materials in a self-contained manner. We first introduce some basic concepts and definitions in Section 1, such as dynamical systems, invariant sets, and limit sets. In Section 2 we present and prove some useful lemmas on the properties of invariant sets and limit sets. Finally, we establish the original LaSalle invariance principle for discrete-time dynamical systems and a simple extension in Section~3. In Section 4, we provide some references on extensions of LaSalle invariance principles for further reading. This document is intended for educational and tutorial purposes and contains lemmas that might be useful as a reference for researchers.

In this work we review a class of deterministic nonlinear models for the propagation of infectious diseases over contact networks with strongly-connected topologies. We consider network models for susceptible-infected (SI), susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS), and susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) settings. In each setting, we provide a comprehensive nonlinear analysis of equilibria, stability properties, convergence, monotonicity, positivity, and threshold conditions. For the network SI setting, specific contributions include establishing its equilibria, stability, and positivity properties. For the network SIS setting, we review a well-known deterministic model, provide novel results on the computation and characterization of the endemic state (when the system is above the epidemic threshold), and present alternative proofs for some of its properties. Finally, for the network SIR setting, we propose novel results for transient behavior, threshold conditions, stability properties, and asymptotic convergence. These results are analogous to those well-known for the scalar case. In addition, we provide a novel iterative algorithm to compute the asymptotic state of the network SIR system.

This paper proposes models of learning process in teams of individuals who collectively execute a sequence of tasks and whose actions are determined by individual skill levels and networks of interpersonal appraisals and influence. The closely-related proposed models have increasing complexity, starting with a centralized manager-based assignment and learning model, and finishing with a social model of interpersonal appraisal, assignments, learning, and influences. We show how rational optimal behavior arises along the task sequence for each model, and discuss conditions of suboptimality. Our models are grounded in replicator dynamics from evolutionary games, influence networks from mathematical sociology, and transactive memory systems from organization science.
