The rapid advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) necessitates the development of optimized Chemiresistive Sensor (CRS) arrays that are both energy-efficient and capable. This study introduces a novel optimization strategy that employs a rapid ensemble learning-based model committee approach to achieve these goals. Utilizing machine learning models such as Elastic Net Regression, Random Forests, and XGBoost, among others, the strategy identifies the most impactful sensors in a CRS array for accurate classification: A weighted voting mechanism is introduced to aggregate the models' opinions in sensor selection, thereby setting up wo distinct working modes, termed "Blue" and "Green". The Blue mode operates with all sensors for maximum detection capability, while the Green mode selectively activates only key sensors, significantly reducing energy consumption without compromising detection accuracy. The strategy is validated through theoretical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, demonstrating its effectiveness and accuracy. The proposed optimization strategy not only elevates the detection capability of CRS arrays but also brings it closer to theoretical limits, promising significant implications for the development of low-cost, easily fabricable next-generation IoT sensor terminals.

As the essential technical support for Metaverse, Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) has attracted the attention of many researchers. MAR applications rely on real-time processing of visual and audio data, and thus those heavy workloads can quickly drain the battery of a mobile device. To address such problem, edge-based solutions have appeared for handling some tasks that require more computing power. However, such strategies introduce a new trade-off: reducing the network latency and overall energy consumption requires limiting the size of the data sent to the edge server, which, in turn, results in lower accuracy. In this paper, we design an edge-based MAR system and propose a mathematical model to describe it and analyze the trade-off between latency, accuracy, server resources allocation and energy consumption. Furthermore, an algorithm named LEAO is proposed to solve this problem. We evaluate the performance of the LEAO and other related algorithms across various simulation scenarios. The results demonstrate the superiority of the LEAO algorithm. Finally, our work provides insight into optimization problem in edge-based MAR system for Metaverse.

To solve the problems of reduced accuracy and prolonging convergence time of through-the-wall radar (TWR) human motion due to wall attenuation, multipath effect, and system interference, we propose a multilink auto-encoding neural network (TWR-MCAE) data augmentation method. Specifically, the TWR-MCAE algorithm is jointly constructed by a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based data preprocessing module, an improved coordinate attention module, a compressed sensing learnable iterative shrinkage threshold reconstruction algorithm (LISTA) module, and an adaptive weight module. The data preprocessing module achieves wall clutter, human motion features, and noise subspaces separation. The improved coordinate attention module achieves clutter and noise suppression. The LISTA module achieves human motion feature enhancement. The adaptive weight module learns the weights and fuses the three subspaces. The TWR-MCAE can suppress the low-rank characteristics of wall clutter and enhance the sparsity characteristics in human motion at the same time. It can be linked before the classification step to improve the feature extraction capability without adding other prior knowledge or recollecting more data. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm gets a better peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), which increases the recognition accuracy and speeds up the training process of the back-end classifiers.

Low-light image enhancement is a crucial preprocessing task for some complex vision tasks. Target detection, image segmentation, and image recognition outcomes are all directly impacted by the impact of image enhancement. However, the majority of the currently used image enhancement techniques do not produce satisfactory outcomes, and these enhanced networks have relatively weak robustness. We suggest an improved network called BrightenNet that uses U-Net as its primary structure and incorporates a number of different attention mechanisms as a solution to this issue. In a specific application, we employ the network as the generator and LSGAN as the training framework to achieve better enhancement results. We demonstrate the validity of the proposed network BrightenNet in the experiments that follow in this paper. The results it produced can both preserve image details and conform to human vision standards.

Recent single-channel speech enhancement methods usually convert waveform to the time-frequency domain and use magnitude/complex spectrum as the optimizing target. However, both magnitude-spectrum-based methods and complex-spectrum-based methods have their respective pros and cons. In this paper, we propose a unified two-branch framework to foster strengths and circumvent weaknesses of different paradigms. The proposed framework could take full advantage of the apparent spectral regularity in magnitude spectrogram and break the bottleneck that magnitude-based methods have suffered. Within each branch, we use collaborative expert block and its variants as substitutes for regular convolution layers. Experiments on TIMIT benchmark demonstrate that our method is superior to existing state-of-the-art ones.

We consider the multi-target detection problem of estimating a two-dimensional target image from a large noisy measurement image that contains many randomly rotated and translated copies of the target image. Motivated by single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, we focus on the low signal-to-noise regime, where it is difficult to estimate the locations and orientations of the target images in the measurement. Our approach uses autocorrelation analysis to estimate rotationally and translationally invariant features of the target image. We demonstrate that, regardless of the level of noise, our technique can be used to recover the target image when the measurement is sufficiently large.

This paper presents a novel artificial intelligence (AI) based methodology to achieve multi-objective real-time power grid control for real-world implementation. State-of-the-art off-policy reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm, soft actor-critic (SAC) is adopted to train AI agents with multi-thread offline training and periodic online training for regulating voltages and transmission losses without violating thermal constraints of lines. A software prototype was developed and deployed in the control center of SGCC Jiangsu Electric Power Company that interacts with their Energy Management System (EMS) every 5 minutes. Massive numerical studies using actual power grid snapshots in the real-time environment verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Well-trained SAC agents can learn to provide effective and subsecond control actions in regulating voltage profiles and reducing transmission losses.

In order to improve the accuracy and resolution for transmit beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, a search-free direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method based on tensor decomposition and polynomial rooting is proposed. In the proposed method, a 3-order tensor is firstly designed to model the received signal of MIMO radar on the basis of the multi-linear property. Then, the factor matrix with target DOA information is obtained by the tensor decomposition via alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm, and subsequently the DOA estimation is converted into the independent minimization problem. By exploiting the Vandermonde structure of the transmit steering vector, a polynomial function is constructed to solve the minimization problem via polynomial rooting. The factor matrix contained in the coefficients of the polynomial can be regarded as a block matrix in the generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC), which accordingly forms a unique deep null in the direction of target in the transmit beampattern. The proposed method can obtain the DOA estimation without the requirements of spectrum searching or transmit beamspace matrix design, which is different from the conventional DOA estimation techniques. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the simulations.

The real entropy based theorectical bound and corresponding prediction models have demonstrated their success in mobility prediction. In this paper, the real entropy based predictability analysis and prediction models are introduced into voice traffic prediction. For this adoption, the traffic quantification methods is proposed and discussed. Based on the real world voice traffic data, the prediction accuracy of N-order Markov models, diffusion based model and MF model are presented, among which, 25-order Markov models performs best and approach close to the maximum predictability. This work demonstrates that, the real entropy can also predict voice traffic well which broaden the understanding on the real entropy based prediction theory.

This paper presents a novel AI-based approach for maximizing time-series available transfer capabilities (ATCs) via autonomous topology control considering various practical constraints and uncertainties. Several AI techniques including supervised learning and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) are adopted and improved to train effective AI agents for achieving the desired performance. First, imitation learning (IL) is used to provide a good initial policy for the AI agent. Then, the agent is trained by DRL algorithms with a novel guided exploration technique, which significantly improves the training efficiency. Finally, an Early Warning (EW) mechanism is designed to help the agent find good topology control strategies for long testing periods, which helps the agent to determine action timing using power system domain knowledge; thus, effectively increases the system error-tolerance and robustness. Effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated in the "2019 Learn to Run a Power Network (L2RPN)" global competition, where the developed AI agents can continuously and safely control a power grid to maximize ATCs without operator's intervention for up to 1-month's operation data and eventually won the first place in both development and final phases of the competition. The winning agent has been open-sourced on GitHub.

We present a novel graph-neural-network-based system to effectively represent large-scale 3D point clouds with the applications to autonomous driving. Many previous works studied the representations of 3D point clouds based on two approaches, voxelization, which causes discretization errors and learning, which is hard to capture huge variations in large-scale scenarios. In this work, we combine voxelization and learning: we discretize the 3D space into voxels and propose novel graph inception networks to represent 3D points in each voxel. This combination makes the system avoid discretization errors and work for large-scale scenarios. The entire system for large-scale 3D point clouds acts like the blocked discrete cosine transform for 2D images; we thus call it the point cloud neural transform (PCT). We further apply the proposed PCT to represent real-time LiDAR sweeps produced by self-driving cars and the PCT with graph inception networks significantly outperforms its competitors.

Motivated by the structure reconstruction problem in single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, we consider the multi-target detection model, where multiple copies of a target signal occur at unknown locations in a long measurement, further corrupted by additive Gaussian noise. At low noise levels, one can easily detect the signal occurrences and estimate the signal by averaging. However, in the presence of high noise, which is the focus of this paper, detection is impossible. Here, we propose two approaches---autocorrelation analysis and an approximate expectation maximization algorithm---to reconstruct the signal without the need to detect signal occurrences in the measurement. In particular, our methods apply to an arbitrary spacing distribution of signal occurrences. We demonstrate reconstructions with synthetic data and empirically show that the sample complexity of both methods scales as 1/SNR^3 in the low SNR regime.

Traffic for internet video streaming has been rapidly increasing and is further expected to increase with the higher definition videos and IoT applications, such as 360 degree videos and augmented virtual reality applications. While efficient management of heterogeneous cloud resources to optimize the quality of experience is important, existing work in this problem space often left out important factors. In this paper, we present a model for describing a today's representative system architecture for video streaming applications, typically composed of a centralized origin server and several CDN sites. Our model comprehensively considers the following factors: limited caching spaces at the CDN sites, allocation of CDN for a video request, choice of different ports from the CDN, and the central storage and bandwidth allocation. With the model, we focus on minimizing a performance metric, stall duration tail probability (SDTP), and present a novel, yet efficient, algorithm to solve the formulated optimization problem. The theoretical bounds with respect to the SDTP metric are also analyzed and presented. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can significantly improve the SDTP metric, compared to the baseline strategies. Small-scale video streaming system implementation in a real cloud environment further validates our results.
