The high directionality and intense Doppler effects of millimeter wave (mmWave) and sub-terahertz (subTHz) channels demand accurate localization of the users and a new paradigm of channel estimation. For orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms, estimating the geometric parameters of the radio channel can make these systems more Doppler-resistant and also enhance sensing and positioning performance. In this paper, we derive a multiuser, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), maximum likelihood, parametric channel estimation algorithm for uplink sensing, which is capable of accurately estimating the parameters of each multipath that composes each user's channel under severe Doppler shift conditions. The presented method is one of the only Doppler-robust currently available algorithms that does not rely on line search.

We introduce a pilot-based maximum likelihood, and a maximum a posteriori parametric channel estimation procedure using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform in uplink sensing. The employment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) aligned with multistatic sensing in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems can provide remarkable performance gains in sensing, by taking advantage of the cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) architecture. Under these considerations, in this paper, the achievable sensing signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio (SINR) of a cell-free mMIMO ISAC UAV-based network is evaluated for two different deployments of UAVs, namely, mobile and tethered. In both scenarios, a transmit precoder that jointly optimizes the sensing and communication requirements subjected to power constraints is designed. Specifically, for the scenario with mobile UAVs, beyond the transmit precoding, we also optimize the position of the transmit UAVs through particle swarm optimization (PSO). The results show that, although tethered UAVs have a more efficient power allocation, the proposed position control algorithm for the mobile UAVs can achieve a superior gain in terms of sensing SINR.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) and D Band (110--170~GHz) frequencies are poised to play a pivotal role in the advancement of sixth-generation (6G) systems and beyond, owing to their ability to enhance performance metrics such as capacity, ultra-low latency, and spectral efficiency. This paper concentrates on deriving statistical insights into power, delay, and the number of paths based on measurements conducted across four distinct locations at a center frequency of 143.1 GHz. The findings underscore the suitability of various distributions in characterizing power behavior in line-of-sight (LOS) scenarios, including lognormal, Nakagami, gamma, and beta distributions, whereas the loglogistic distribution gives the optimal fit for power distribution in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. Moreover, the exponential distribution shows to be the most appropriate model for the delay distribution in both LOS and NLOS scenarios. In terms of the number of paths, observations indicate a tendency for the highest concentration within the 10 m to 30 m distance range between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx). These insights shed light on the statistical nature of D band propagation characteristics, which are vital for informing the design and optimization of future 6G communication systems

Wireless communication systems must increasingly support a multitude of machine-type communications (MTC) devices, thus calling for advanced strategies for active user detection (AUD). Recent literature has delved into AUD techniques based on compressed sensing, highlighting the critical role of signal sparsity. This study investigates the relationship between frequency diversity and signal sparsity in the AUD problem. Single-antenna users transmit multiple copies of non-orthogonal pilots across multiple frequency channels and the base station independently performs AUD in each channel using the orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm. We note that, although frequency diversity may improve the likelihood of successful reception of the signals, it may also damage the channel sparsity level, leading to important trade-offs. We show that a sparser signal significantly benefits AUD, surpassing the advantages brought by frequency diversity in scenarios with limited temporal resources and/or high numbers of receive antennas. Conversely, with longer pilots and fewer receive antennas, investing in frequency diversity becomes more impactful, resulting in a tenfold AUD performance improvement.

To remotely monitor the physiological status of the human body, long range (LoRa) communication has been considered as an eminently suitable candidate for wireless body area networks (WBANs). Typically, a Rayleigh-lognormal fading channel is encountered by the LoRa links of the WBAN. In this context, we characterize the performance of the LoRa system in WBAN scenarios with an emphasis on the physical (PHY) layer and medium access control (MAC) layer in the face of Rayleigh-lognormal fading channels and the same spreading factor interference. Specifically, closed-form approximate bit error probability (BEP) expressions are derived for the LoRa system. The results show that increasing the SF and reducing the interference efficiently mitigate the shadowing effects. Moreover, in the quest for the most suitable MAC protocol for LoRa based WBANs, three MAC protocols are critically appraised, namely the pure ALOHA, slotted ALOHA, and carrier-sense multiple access. The coverage probability, energy efficiency, throughput, and system delay of the three MAC protocols are analyzed in Rayleigh-lognormal fading channel. Furthermore, the performance of the equal-interval-based and equal-area-based schemes is analyzed to guide the choice of the SF. Our simulation results confirm the accuracy of the mathematical analysis and provide some useful insights for the future design of LoRa based WBANs.

This paper provides a solution for the activity detection and channel estimation problem in grant-free access with correlated device activity patterns. In particular, we consider a machine-type communications (MTC) network operating in event-triggered traffic mode, where the devices are distributed over clusters with an activity behaviour that exhibits both intra-cluster and inner-cluster sparsity patterns. Furthermore, to model the network's intra-cluster and inner-cluster sparsity, we propose a structured sparsity-inducing spike-and-slab prior which provides a flexible approach to encode the prior information about the correlated sparse activity pattern. Furthermore, we drive a Bayesian inference scheme based on the expectation propagation (EP) framework to solve the JUICE problem. Numerical results highlight the significant gains obtained by the proposed structured sparsity-inducing spike-and-slab prior in terms of both user identification accuracy and channel estimation performance.

This paper addresses the joint user identification and channel estimation (JUICE) problem in machine-type communications under the practical spatially correlated channels model with unknown covariance matrices. Furthermore, we consider an MTC network with hierarchical user activity patterns following an event-triggered traffic mode. Therein the users are distributed over clusters with a structured sporadic activity behaviour that exhibits both cluster-level and intra-cluster sparsity patterns. To solve the JUICE problem, we first leverage the concept of strong priors and propose a hierarchical-sparsity-inducing spike-and-slab prior to model the structured sparse activity pattern. Subsequently, we derive a Bayesian inference scheme by coupling the expectation propagation (EP) algorithm with the expectation maximization (EM) framework. Second, we reformulate the JUICE as a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation problem and propose a computationally-efficient solution based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). More precisely, we relax the strong spike-and-slab prior with a cluster-sparsity-promoting prior based on the long-sum penalty. We then derive an ADMM algorithm that solves the MAP problem through a sequence of closed-form updates. Numerical results highlight the significant performance significant gains obtained by the proposed algorithms, as well as their robustness against various assumptions on the users sparse activity behaviour.

While the conciliation of sensing and communication requirements is still a challenge, the privacy of the sensing information is a growing concern that should be seriously taken on the design of these systems to prevent other attacks. This paper tackles this issue by assessing the probability of an internal adversary to infer the target location information from the received signal by considering the design of transmit precoders that jointly optimizes the sensing and communication requirements in a multi-static-based cell-free ISAC network. Our results show that the multi-static setting facilitates a more precise estimation of the location of the target than the mono-static implementation.

This paper proposes an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based distributed sensing framework that uses orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms to detect the position of a ground target, and UAVs operate in half-duplex mode. A spatial grid approach is proposed, where an specific area in the ground is divided into cells of equal size, then the radar cross-section (RCS) of each cell is jointly estimated by a network of dual-function UAVs. For this purpose, three estimation algorithms are proposed employing the maximum likelihood criterion, and digital beamforming is used for the local signal acquisition at the receive UAVs. It is also considered that the coordination, fusion of sensing data, and central estimation is performed at a certain UAV acting as a fusion center (FC). Monte Carlo simulations are performed to obtain the absolute estimation error of the proposed framework. The results show an improved accuracy and resolution by the proposed framework, if compared to a single monostatic UAV benchmark, due to the distributed approach among the UAVs. It is also evidenced that a reduced overhead is obtained when compared to a general compressive sensing (CS) approach.

Joint communications and sensing (JCAS) is envisioned as a key feature in future wireless communications networks. In massive MIMO-JCAS systems, hybrid beamforming (HBF) is typically employed to achieve satisfactory beamforming gains with reasonable hardware cost and power consumption. Due to the coupling of the analog and digital precoders in HBF and the dual objective in JCAS, JCAS-HBF design problems are very challenging and usually require highly complex algorithms. In this paper, we propose a fast HBF design for JCAS based on deep unfolding to optimize a tradeoff between the communications rate and sensing accuracy. We first derive closed-form expressions for the gradients of the communications and sensing objectives with respect to the precoders and demonstrate that the magnitudes of the gradients pertaining to the analog precoder are typically smaller than those associated with the digital precoder. Based on this observation, we propose a modified projected gradient ascent (PGA) method with significantly improved convergence. We then develop a deep unfolded PGA scheme that efficiently optimizes the communications-sensing performance tradeoff with fast convergence thanks to the well-trained hyperparameters. In doing so, we preserve the interpretability and flexibility of the optimizer while leveraging data to improve performance. Finally, our simulations demonstrate the potential of the proposed deep unfolded method, which achieves up to 33.5% higher communications sum rate and 2.5 dB lower beampattern error compared with the conventional design based on successive convex approximation and Riemannian manifold optimization. Furthermore, it attains up to a 65% reduction in run time and computational complexity with respect to the PGA procedure without unfolding.

Low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) have emerged as an efficient solution for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to reap high data rates with reasonable power consumption and hardware complexity. In this paper, we analyze the performance of oversampling in uplink massive MIMO orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems with low-resolution ADCs. Considering both the temporal and spatial correlation of the quantization distortion, we derive an approximate closed-form expression of an achievable sum rate, which reveals how the oversampling ratio (OSR), the ADC resolution, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) jointly affect the system performance. In particular, we demonstrate that oversampling can effectively improve the sum rate by mitigating the impact of the quantization distortion, especially at high SNR and with very low ADC resolution. Furthermore, we show that the considered low-resolution massive MIMO-OFDM system can achieve the same performance as the unquantized one when both the SNR and the OSR are sufficiently high. Numerical simulations confirm our analysis.

Joint communications and sensing (JCAS) systems have recently emerged as a promising technology to utilize the scarce spectrum in wireless networks and to reuse the same hardware to save infrastructure costs. In practical JCAS systems, dual functional constant-modulus waveforms can be employed to avoid signal distortion in nonlinear power amplifiers. However, the designs of such waveforms are very challenging due to the nonconvex constant-modulus constraint. The conventional branch-and-bound (BnB) method can achieve optimal solution but at the cost of exponential complexity and long run time. In this paper, we propose an efficient deep unfolding method for the constant-modulus waveform design in a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) JCAS system. We consider unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless systems where downlink communications between a multi-antenna UAV and multiple users are assisted by a hybrid active-passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We aim at a fairness design of two typical UAV-enabled networks, namely the static-UAV network where the UAV is deployed at a fixed location to serve all users at the same time, and the mobile-UAV network which employs the time division multiple access protocol. In both networks, our goal is to maximize the minimum rate among users through jointly optimizing the UAV's location/trajectory, transmit beamformer, and RIS coefficients. The resulting problems are highly nonconvex due to a strong coupling between the involved variables. We develop efficient algorithms based on block coordinate ascend and successive convex approximation to effectively solve these problems in an iterative manner. In particular, in the optimization of the mobile-UAV network, closed-form solutions to the transmit beamformer and RIS passive coefficients are derived. Numerical results show that a hybrid RIS equipped with only 4 active elements and a power budget of 0 dBm offers an improvement of 38%-63% in minimum rate, while that achieved by a passive RIS is only about 15%, with the same total number of elements.

In conventional joint communications and sensing (JCAS) designs for multi-carrier multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the dual-functional waveforms are often optimized for the whole frequency band, resulting in limited communications--sensing performance tradeoff. To overcome the limitation, we propose employing a subset of subcarriers for JCAS, while the communications function is performed over all the subcarriers. This offers more degrees of freedom to enhance the communications performance under a given sensing accuracy. We first formulate the rate maximization under the sensing accuracy constraint to optimize the beamformers and JCAS subcarriers. The problem is solved via Riemannian manifold optimization and closed-form solutions. Numerical results for an 8x4 MIMO system with 64 subcarriers show that compared to the conventional subcarrier sharing scheme, the proposed scheme employing 16 JCAS subcarriers offers 60% improvement in the achievable communications rate at the signal-to-noise ratio of 10 dB. We investigate the beam squint effect in uniform planar arrays (UPAs) and propose an efficient hybrid beamforming (HBF) design to mitigate the beam squint in multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems operating at terahertz band. We first analyze the array gain and derive the closed-form beam squint ratio that characterizes the severity of the beam squint effect on UPAs. The effect is shown to be more severe with a higher fractional bandwidth, while it can be significantly mitigated when the shape of a UPA approaches a square. We then focus on the HBF design that maximizes the system spectral efficiency. The design problem is challenging due to the frequency-flat nature and hardware constraints of the analog beamformer. We overcome the challenges by proposing an efficient decoupling design in which the digital and analog beamformers admit closed-form solutions, which facilitate practical implementations. However, the fact that hybrid MIMO systems implement part of their beamforming in analog and part in digital makes the optimization of their beampattern notably more challenging compared with conventional fully digital MIMO. Then, the digital beamformer is obtained via a closed-form LS solution, while the analog beamformer is obtained via ManNet, a lightweight sparsely-connected deep neural network based on unfolding projected gradient descent. Incorporating ManNet into the developed deep unfolding framework leads to the ManNet-based FC-HBF scheme. We show that the proposed ManNet can also be applied to SC-HBF designs after determining the connections between the radio frequency chain and antennas. We further develop a simplified version of ManNet, referred to as subManNet, that directly produces the sparse analog precoder for SC-HBF architectures. Both networks are trained with an unsupervised training procedure. Numerical results verify that the proposed ManNet/subManNet-based HBF approaches outperform the conventional model-based and deep unfolded counterparts with very low complexity and a fast run time. For example, in a simulation with 128 transmit antennas, it attains a slightly higher spectral efficiency than the Riemannian manifold scheme, but over 1000 times faster and with a complexity reduction of more than by a factor of six (6).

This paper proposes an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based distributed sensing framework that uses frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms to detect the position of a ground target under half-duplex operation. The area of interest, where the target is located, is sectioned into a grid of cells, where the radar cross-section (RCS) of every cell is jointly estimated by the UAVs, and a central node acts as a fusion center by receiving all the estimations and performing information-level fusion. For local estimation at each UAV, the periodogram approach is utilised, and a digital receive beamformer is assumed. The fused RCS estimates of the grid are used to estimate the cell containing the target. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to obtain the detection probability of the proposed framework, and our results show that the proposed framework attains improved accuracy for the detection of a target than other OFDM bi-static radar approaches proposed in the literature.

The co-design of radar sensing and communications in dual-functional radar communication systems brings promising advantages for next generation wireless networks by providing gains in terms of the efficient and flexible use of spectrum, reduced costs, and lower energy consumption than in two separate systems. Besides the challenges associated with the conciliation of the conflicting requirements to perform wireless communication and radar sensing in a real-time cooperation, privacy issues represent a cause of concern as the co-design can let the network prone to active attacks. This paper tackles this issue by evaluating the associated privacy risks with the design of transmit precoders that simultaneously optimise both the radar transmit beampattern and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise at the communication users. Our results show that if a malicious user can infer the transmitted precoder matrix with a certain accuracy, there is a reasonable risk of exposure of the location of the target and privacy breaches.

To enable an intelligent, programmable and multi-vendor radio access network (RAN) for 6G networks, considerable efforts have been made in standardization and development of open RAN (O-RAN). So far, however, the applicability of O-RAN in controlling and optimizing RAN functions has not been widely investigated. In this paper, we jointly optimize the flow-split distribution, congestion control and scheduling (JFCS) to enable an intelligent traffic steering application in O-RAN. Combining tools from network utility maximization and stochastic optimization, we introduce a multi-layer optimization framework that provides fast convergence, long-term utility-optimality and significant delay reduction compared to the state-of-the-art and baseline RAN approaches. Our main contributions are three-fold: i) we propose the novel JFCS framework to efficiently and adaptively direct traffic to appropriate radio units; ii) we develop low-complexity algorithms based on the reinforcement learning, inner approximation and bisection search methods to effectively solve the JFCS problem in different time scales; and iii) the rigorous theoretical performance results are analyzed to show that there exists a scaling factor to improve the tradeoff between delay and utility-optimization. Collectively, the insights in this work will open the door towards fully automated networks with enhanced control and flexibility. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in terms of the convergence rate, long-term utility-optimality and delay reduction.

In particular, we address the JUICE in massive machine-type communications (mMTC) network under correlated Rayleigh fading channels with unknown channel covariance matrices. We formulate the JUICE problem as a maximum \emph{a posteriori} probability (MAP) problem with properly chosen priors to incorporate the partial knowledge of the UEs' clustered activity and the unknown covariance matrices. We derive a computationally-efficient algorithm based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to solve the MAP problem iteratively via a sequence of closed-form updates. Hybrid beamforming (HBF) transceiver architectures based on frequency-independent phase shifters (PS-HBF) are sensitive to the phases and physical directions with limited capability to compensate for the detrimental effects of the beam squint. Motivated by the fact that switches are phase-independent and more power/cost efficient than PSs, we consider the switch-based HBF (SW-HBF) for wideband large-scale multiple-input multiple-output systems in this paper. We first derive a closed-form expression of the beam squint ratio and compare the expected array gains of both SW-HBF and PS-HBF architectures. The results show that SW-HBF is more robust to the beam squint effect. We then focus on the SW-HBF designs to maximize the spectral efficiency (SE) in both single-user and multiuser systems, which are both non-convex mixed-integer problems. For the former, by combining the tabu search (TS) method and projected gradient ascend (PGA), we propose an efficient heuristic PGA-TS algorithm to design analog beamformers while the digital ones admit closed-form solutions. For the latter, we develop a two-step algorithm based on fractional programming and the PGA-TS method. Simulations show that the proposed SW-HBF schemes are efficient and can outperform PS-based HBF architectures in terms of both SE and energy efficiency in terahertz communication systems.

Cellular networks that are traditionally designed for human-type communication (HTC) have the potential to provide cost effective connectivity to machine-type communication (MTC). However, MTC is characterized by unprecedented traffic in cellular networks, thus posing a challenge to its successful incorporation. In this work, we propose a unified framework for amicable coexistence of MTC and HTC. We consider a heterogeneous network where machine-type devices coexist with enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) devices and propose transceiver techniques that promote efficient signal recovery from these devices. For this, we present an eMBB pilot and MTC data generation strategy that facilitates joint coherent decoding of eMBB data and non-coherent decoding of MTC data. Furthermore, we assess the feasibility of coexistence using receiver operating characteristics, outage probability, and normalized mean square error (NMSE). Our numerical results reveal that a harmonious coexistence of the heterogeneous services can be achieved with properly configured average signal-to-noise ratios and pilot length.

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) have shown huge advantages in many potential use cases and thus have been considered a promising candidate for next-generation wireless systems. In this paper, we consider an IRS-assisted multigroup multicast (IRS-MGMC) system in a multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenario, for which the related existing literature is rather limited. In particular, we aim to jointly design the transmit beamformers and IRS phase shifts to maximize the sum rate of the system under consideration. In order to obtain a numerically efficient solution to the formulated non-convex optimization problem, we propose an alternating projected gradient (APG) method where each iteration admits a closed-form and is shown to be superior to a known solution that is derived from the majorization-minimization (MM) method in terms of both achievable sum rate and required complexity, i.e., run time. In particular, we show that the complexity of the proposed APG method grows linearly with the number of IRS tiles, while that of the known solution in comparison grows with the third power of the number of IRS tiles. The numerical results reported in this paper extend our understanding on the achievable rates of large-scale IRS-assisted multigroup multicast systems.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a key technology for emerging next-generation wireless systems. Utilizing large antenna arrays at base-stations, massive MIMO enables substantial spatial multiplexing gains by simultaneously serving a large number of users. However, the complexity in massive MIMO signal processing (e.g., data detection) increases rapidly with the number of users, making conventional hand-engineered algorithms less computationally efficient. Low-complexity massive MIMO detection algorithms, especially those inspired or aided by deep learning, have emerged as a promising solution. While there exist many MIMO detection algorithms, the aim of this magazine paper is to provide insight into how to leverage deep neural networks (DNN) for massive MIMO detection. We review recent developments in DNN-based MIMO detection that incorporate the domain knowledge of established MIMO detection algorithms with the learning capability of DNNs. We then present a comparison of the key numerical performance metrics of these works. We conclude by describing future research areas and applications of DNNs in massive MIMO receivers.

We consider a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) communications system which is assisted by a hybrid active-passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Unlike conventional passive RISs, hybrid RIS is equipped with a few active elements with the ability to reflect and amplify incident signals to significantly improve the system performance. Towards a fairness-oriented design, we maximize the minimum rate among all users through jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming vectors and RIS reflecting/amplifying coefficients. Combining tools from block coordinate ascent and successive convex approximation, the challenging nonconvex problem is efficiently solved by a low-complexity iterative algorithm. The numerical results show that a hybrid RIS with 4 active elements out of a total of 50 elements with a power budget of -1 dBm offers an improvement of up to 80% to the considered system, while that achieved by a fully passive RIS is only 27%.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) technology is a way to increase the spectral efficiency of machine-type communications (MTC). To exploit the benefits from large antenna arrays, accurate channel estimation through pilot signals is needed. Massive MTC systems cannot avoid pilot reuse due to the enormous numbers of connected devices. We propose a pilot reuse algorithm based on channel charting (CC) to mitigate pilot contamination in a multi-sector single-cell massive MTC system having spatially correlated channels. We show that after creating an interference map via CC, a simple strategy to allocate the pilot sequences can be implemented. The simulation results show that the CC-based pilot reuse strategy improves channel estimation accuracy, which subsequently improves the symbol detection performance and increases the spectral efficiency compared to other existing schemes. Moreover, the performance of the CC pilot assignment method approaches that of exhaustive search pilot assignment for small network setups.

We consider a multigroup multicast cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink system with short-term power constraints. In particular, the normalized conjugate beamforming scheme is adopted at each access point (AP) to keep the downlink power strictly under the power budget regardless of small scale fading. In the considered scenario, APs multicast signals to multiple groups of users whereby users in the same group receive the same message. Under this setup, we are interested in maximizing the minimum achievable rate of all groups, commonly known as the max-min fairness problem, which has not been studied before in this context. To solve the considered problem, we first present a bisection method which in fact has been widely used in previous studies for cell-free massive MIMO, and then propose an accelerated projected gradient (APG) method. We show that the proposed APG method outperforms the bisection method requiring lesser run time while still achieving the same objective value. Moreover, the considered power control scheme provides significantly improved performance and more fairness among the users compared to the equal power allocation scheme.

Switch-based hybrid beamforming (SW-HBF) architectures are promising for realizing massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications systems because of their low cost and low power consumption. In this paper, we study the performance of SW-HBF in a wideband multi-carrier MIMO communication system considering the beam squint effect. We aim at designing the switch-based combiner that maximizes the system spectral efficiency (SE). However, the design problem is challenging because the analog combing matrix elements are binary variables. To overcome this, we propose tabu search-based (TS) SW-HBF schemes that can attain near-optimal performance with reasonable computational complexity. Furthermore, we compare the total power consumption and energy efficiency (EE) of the SW-HBF architecture to those of the phase-shifter-based hybrid beamforming (PS-HBF) architecture. Numerical simulations show that the proposed algorithms can efficiently find near-optimal solutions. Moreover, the SW-HBF scheme can significantly mitigate the beam squint effect and is less affected by the number of subcarriers than PS-HBF. It also provides improved SE and EE performance compared to PS-HBF schemes.

Upcoming beyond fifth generation (5G) communications systems aim at further enhancing key performance indicators and fully supporting brand new use cases by embracing emerging techniques, e.g., reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), integrated communication, localization, and sensing, and mmWave/THz communications. The wireless intelligence empowered by state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques has been widely considered at the transceivers, and now the paradigm is deemed to be shifted to the smart control of radio propagation environment by virtue of RISs. In this article, we argue that to harness the full potential of RISs, localization and communication must be tightly coupled. This is in sharp contrast to 5G and earlier generations, where localization was a minor additional service. To support this, we first introduce the fundamentals of RIS mmWave channel modeling, followed by RIS channel state information acquisition and link establishment. Then, we deal with the connection between localization and communications, from a separate and joint perspective.

However, in mmWave MIMO orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems, hybrid beamforming design is challenging because the analog precoder and combiner are required to be shared across the whole employed bandwidth. In this paper, we propose closed-form solutions to the problem of designing the analog precoder/combiner in a mmWave MIMO-OFDM system by maximizing the upper bound of the spectral efficiency. The closed-form solutions facilitate the design of analog beamformers while guaranteeing state-of-art performance. The passive RIS without any baseband processing capabilities brings difficulty on the channel estimation (CE), since the individual channels or the cascaded one can be estimated only at base station (BS) via uplink training or mobile station (MS) via downlink training. In order to facilitate the CSI acquisition, we focus on the hybrid RIS architecture, where a small number of elements are active and able to receive and process the pilot signals at the RIS. The CE is performed in two stages by following the atomic norm minimization to recover the channel parameters, i.e., angles of departure (AoDs), angles of arrival (AoAs), and propagation path gains. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can outperform the passive RIS CE under the same training overhead. Furthermore, we also study the theoretical performance limits in terms of mean square error (MSE) via Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) analyses.

In this paper, we utilize tools from stochastic geometry to estimate the interference propagation via reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in the millimeter wave (mmWave, 30-300 GHz) band and specifically on the D band (110-170 GHz). The RISs have been of great interest lately to maximize the channel gains in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) communication situations. We derive expressions for stochastic interference level in RIS powered systems and validate those with simulations. It will be shown that the interference levels via RIS link are rather small compared to the designed RIS link or the LOS interference as the random interference loses significant part of the RIS gain. We also analyse the validity of far field channel and antenna gains in the near field of a large array. It is shown that, while the high frequency systems require large arrays that push the far field far away from the antenna, the far field equations are very accurate up to about half way of the near field.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been introduced as a remedy for mitigating frequent blockages in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication networks. However, perfect or nearly perfect channel state information (CSI) is fundamental in order to achieve their full potential. Traditionally, an RIS is fully passive without any baseband processing capabilities, which poses great challenges for CSI acquisition. Thus, we focus on the hybrid RIS architecture, where a small portion of RIS elements are active and able to processing the received pilot signals for estimating the corresponding channel. The channel estimation (CE) is done by resorting to off-the-grid compressive sensing technique, i.e., atomic norm minimization, for exacting channel parameters through two stages. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the passive RIS CE under the same training overhead.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology has recently emerged as a spectral- and cost-efficient approach for wireless communications systems. However, existing hand-engineered schemes for passive beamforming design and optimization of RIS, such as the alternating optimization (AO) approaches, require a high computational complexity, especially for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To overcome this challenge, we propose a low-complexity unsupervised learning scheme, referred to as learning-phase-shift neural network (LPSNet), to efficiently find the solution to the spectral efficiency maximization problem in RIS-aided MIMO systems. In particular, the proposed LPSNet has an optimized input structure and requires a small number of layers and nodes to produce efficient phase shifts for the RIS. Simulation results for a 16x2 MIMO system assisted by an RIS with 40 elements show that the LPSNet achieves 97.25% of the SE provided by the AO counterpart with more than a 95% reduction in complexity.

We propose a novel concept of hybrid relay-reflecting intelligent surface (HR-RIS), in which a single or few elements are deployed with power amplifiers (PAs) to serve as active relays, while the remaining elements only reflect the incident signals. The design and optimization of the HR-RIS is formulated in a spectral efficiency (SE) maximization problem, which is efficiently solved by the alternating optimization (AO) method. The simulation results show that a significant improvement in the SE can be attained by the proposed HR-RIS, even with a limited power budget, with respect to the conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In particular, the favorable design and deployment of the HR-RIS are analytically derived and numerically justified.

As a key enabler for massive machine-type communications (mMTC), spatial multiplexing relies on massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) technology to serve the massive number of user equipments (UEs). To exploit spatial multiplexing, accurate channel estimation through pilot signals is needed. In mMTC systems, it is impractical to allocate a unique orthogonal pilot sequence to each UE as it would require too long pilot sequences, degrading the spectral efficiency. This work addresses the design of channel features from correlated fading channels to assist the pilot assignment in multi-sector mMTC systems under pilot reuse of orthogonal sequences. In order to reduce pilot collisions and to enable pilot reuse, we propose to extract features from the channel covariance matrices that reflect the level of orthogonality between the UEs channels. Two features are investigated: covariance matrix distance (CMD) feature and CMD-aided channel charting (CC) feature. In terms of symbol error rate and achievable rate, the CC-based feature shows superior performance than the CMD-based feature and baseline pilot assignment algorithms.

We conduct novel coverage probability analysis of downlink transmission in a three-dimensional (3D) terahertz (THz) communication (THzCom) system. In this system, we address the unique propagation properties in THz band, e.g., absorption loss, super-narrow directional beams, and high vulnerability towards blockage, which are fundamentally different from those at lower frequencies. Different from existing studies, we characterize the performance while considering the effect of 3D directional antennas at both access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs), and the joint impact of the blockage caused by the user itself, moving humans, and wall blockers in a 3D environment. Under such consideration, we develop a tractable analytical framework to derive a new expression for the coverage probability by examining the regions where dominant interferers (i.e., those can cause outage by themselves) can exist, and the average number of interferers existing in these regions. Aided by numerical results, we validate our analysis and reveal that ignoring the impact of the vertical heights of THz devices in the analysis leads to a substantial underestimation of the coverage probability. We also show that it is more worthwhile to increase the antenna directivity at the APs than at the UEs, to produce a more reliable THzCom system.

Grant-free access is considered as a key enabler to massive machine-type communications (mMTC) as it promotes energy-efficiency and small signalling overhead. Due to the sporadic user activity in mMTC, joint user identification and channel estimation (JUICE) is a main challenge. This paper addresses the JUICE in single-cell mMTC with single-antenna users and a multi-antenna base station (BS) under spatially correlated fading channels. In particular, by leveraging the sporadic user activity, we solve the JUICE in a multi measurement vector compressed sensing (CS) framework under two different cases, with and without the knowledge of prior channel distribution information (CDI) at the BS. First, for the case without prior information, we formulate the JUICE as an iterative reweighted $\ell_{2,1}$-norm minimization problem. Second, when the CDI is known to the BS, we exploit the available information and formulate the JUICE from a Bayesian estimation perspective as a maximum \emph{a posteriori} probability (MAP) estimation problem. For both JUICE formulations, we derive efficient iterative solutions based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). The numerical experiments show that the proposed solutions achieve higher channel estimation quality and activity detection accuracy with shorter pilot sequences compared to existing algorithms.

Various benefits brought by deploying one or multiple RISs include increased spectrum and energy efficiency, enhanced connectivity, extended communication coverage, reduced complexity at transceivers, and even improved localization accuracy. However, to unleash their full potential, fundamentals related to RISs, ranging from physical-layer (PHY) modelling to RIS phase control, need to be addressed thoroughly. In this paper, we provide an overview of some timely research problems related to the RIS technology, i.e., PHY modelling (including also physics), channel estimation, potential RIS architectures, and RIS phase control (via both model-based and data-driven approaches), along with recent numerical results. We envision that more efforts will be devoted towards intelligent wireless environments, enabled by RISs.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a cost- and energy-efficient technology that can customize and program the physical propagation environment by reflecting radio waves in preferred directions. However, the purely passive reflection of RISs not only limits the end-to-end channel beamforming gains, but also hinders the acquisition of accurate channel state information for the phase control at RISs. In this paper, we provide an overview of a hybrid relay-reflecting intelligent surface (HR-RIS) architecture, in which only a few elements are active and connected to power amplifiers and radio frequency chains. The introduction of a small number of active elements enables a remarkable system performance improvement which can also compensate for losses due to hardware impairments such as the deployment of limited-resolution phase shifters. Particularly, the active processing facilitates efficient channel estimation and localization at HR-RISs. We present two practical architectures for HR-RISs, namely, fixed and dynamic HR-RISs, and discuss their applications to beamforming, channel estimation, and localization. The benefits, key challenges, and future research directions for HR-RIS-aided communications are also highlighted. Numerical results for an exemplary deployment scenario show that HR-RISs with only four active elements can attain up to 42.8 percent and 41.8 percent improvement in spectral efficiency and energy efficiency, respectively, compared with conventional RISs.
