Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impairments in communication, social interaction and restricted or repetitive behaviors. Extensive research has been conducted to identify distinctions between individuals with ASC and neurotypical individuals. However, limited attention has been given to comprehensively evaluating how variations in image acquisition protocols across different centers influence these observed differences. This analysis focuses on structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) data from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange I (ABIDE I) database, evaluating subjects' condition and individual centers to identify disparities between ASC and control groups. Statistical analysis, employing permutation tests, utilizes two distinct statistical map** methods: Statistical Agnostic Map** (SAM) and Statistical Parametric Map** (SPM). Results reveal the absence of statistically significant differences in any brain region, attributed to factors such as limited sample sizes within certain centers, noise effects and the problem of multicentrism in a heterogeneous condition such as autism. This study indicates limitations in using the ABIDE I database to detect structural differences in the brain between neurotypical individuals and those diagnosed with ASC. Furthermore, results from the SAM map** method show greater consistency with existing literature.

Abstract:
This work proposes the use of 3D convolutional variational autoencoders (CVAEs) to trace the changes and symptomatology produced by neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD). In this work, we present a novel approach to detect and quantify changes in dopamine transporter (DaT) concentration and its spatial patterns using 3D CVAEs on Ioflupane (FPCIT) imaging. Our approach leverages the power of deep learning to learn a low-dimensional representation of the brain imaging data, which then is linked to different symptom categories using regression algorithms. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on a dataset of PD patients and healthy controls, and show that general symptomatology (UPDRS) is linked to a d-dimensional decomposition via the CVAE with R2>0.25. Our work shows the potential of representation learning not only in early diagnosis but in understanding neurodegeneration processes and symptomatology.

Non-mass enhancing lesions (NME) constitute a diagnostic challenge in dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) of the breast. Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems provide physicians with advanced tools for analysis, assessment and evaluation that have a significant impact on the diagnostic performance. Here, we propose a new approach to address the challenge of NME detection and segmentation, taking advantage of independent component analysis (ICA) to extract data-driven dynamic lesion characterizations. A set of independent sources was obtained from DCE-MRI dataset of breast patients, and the dynamic behavior of the different tissues was described by multiple dynamic curves, together with a set of eigenimages describing the scores for each voxel. A new test image is projected onto the independent source space using the unmixing matrix, and each voxel is classified by a support vector machine (SVM) that has already been trained with manually delineated data. A solution to the high false positive rate problem is proposed by controlling the SVM hyperplane location, outperforming previously published approaches.
