We present a navigation concept for solving the lost in space and time problem using optical observations of $δ$ Scuti variable stars. Only a small number of techniques exist that allow a spacecraft to recover from being lost in both space and time, which can be caused by a failure of the onboard clock and navigation systems. Optical observations of $δ$ Scuti stars, which can be collected onboard from star trackers or navigation cameras, may enable faster and/or more accurate position and time solutions compared to existing techniques without requiring additional equipment. Our results indicate that one day of observation by the OSIRIS-APEX MapCam may enable position and time determination accuracy within 0.05 au (3$σ$) and 15 s (3$σ$).

In this paper, we consider an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled emergency communication system, which establishes temporary communication link with users equipment (UEs) in a typical disaster environment with mountainous forest and obstacles. Towards this end, a joint deployment, power allocation, and user association optimization problem is formulated to maximize the total transmission rate, while considering the demand of each UE and the disaster environment characteristics. Then, an alternating optimization algorithm is proposed by integrating coalition game and virtual force approach which captures the impact of the demand priority of UEs and the obstacles to the flight path and consumed power. Simulation results demonstrate that the computation time consumed by our proposed algorithm is only $5.6\%$ of the traditional heuristic algorithms, which validates its effectiveness in disaster scenarios.

UAV-assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) network is crucial for post-disaster emergency rescue. The speed of UAV deployment will directly impact rescue results. However, the ISAC UAV deployment in emergency scenarios is difficult to solve, which contradicts the rapid deployment. In this paper, we propose a two-stage deployment framework to achieve rapid ISAC UAV deployment in emergency scenarios, which consists of an offline stage and an online stage. Specifically, in the offline stage, we first formulate the ISAC UAV deployment problem and define the ISAC utility as the objective function, which integrates communication rate and localization accuracy. Secondly, we develop a dynamic particle swarm optimization (DPSO) algorithm to construct an optimized UAV deployment dataset. Finally, we train a convolutional neural network (CNN) model with this dataset, which replaces the time-consuming DPSO algorithm. In the online stage, the trained CNN model can be used to make quick decisions for the ISAC UAV deployment. The simulation results indicate that the trained CNN model achieves superior ISAC performance compared to the classic particle swarm optimization algorithm. Additionally, it significantly reduces the deployment time by more than 96%.

Diffusion models have demonstrated powerful data generation capabilities in various research fields such as image generation. However, in the field of vibration signal generation, the criteria for evaluating the quality of the generated signal are different from that of image generation and there is a fundamental difference between them. At present, there is no research on the ability of diffusion model to generate vibration signal. In this paper, a Time Series Diffusion Method (TSDM) is proposed for vibration signal generation, leveraging the foundational principles of diffusion models. The TSDM uses an improved U-net architecture with attention block, ResBlock and TimeEmbedding to effectively segment and extract features from one-dimensional time series data. It operates based on forward diffusion and reverse denoising processes for time-series generation. Experimental validation is conducted using single-frequency, multi-frequency datasets, and bearing fault datasets. The results show that TSDM can accurately generate the single-frequency and multi-frequency features in the time series and retain the basic frequency features for the diffusion generation results of the bearing fault series. It is also found that the original DDPM could not generate high quality vibration signals, but the improved U-net in TSDM, which applied the combination of attention block and ResBlock, could effectively improve the quality of vibration signal generation. Finally, TSDM is applied to the small sample fault diagnosis of three public bearing fault datasets, and the results show that the accuracy of small sample fault diagnosis of the three datasets is improved by 32.380%, 18.355% and 9.298% at most, respectively.

An algorithm is presented for solving the cold-start problem using observations of X-ray pulsars. Using a norm-minimization-based approach, the algorithm extends Lohan's banded-error intersection model to 3-dimensional space while reducing compute time by an order of magnitude. Higher-fidelity X-ray pulsar signal models, including the parallax effect, Shapiro delay, time dilation, and higher-order pulsar timing models, are considered. The feasibility of solving the cold-start problem using X-ray pulsar navigation is revisited with the improved models and prior knowledge requirements are discussed. Monte Carlo simulations are used to establish upper bounds on uncertainty and determine the accuracy of the algorithm. Results indicate that it is necessary to account for the parallax effect, time dilation, and higher-order pulsar timing models in order to successfully determine the position of the spacecraft in a cold-start scenario. The algorithm can uniquely identify a candidate spacecraft position within a 10 AU $\times$ 10 AU $\times$ 0.01 AU spheroid domain by observing eight to nine pulsars. The median position error of the algorithm is on the order of 15 km. Prior knowledge of spacecraft position is technically required, but only to an accuracy of 100 AU, making it practically unnecessary for navigation within the Solar System. Results further indicate that choosing lower-frequency pulsars increases the maximum domain size but also increases position error.

We report an AlGaInAs multiple quantum well integrated source of polarization controlled light consisting of a polarization mode converter PMC, differential phase shifter(DPS), and a side wall grating distributed-feedback DFB laser. We demonstrate an asymmetrical stepped-height ridge waveguide PMC to realize TE to TM polarization conversion and a symmetrical straight waveguide DPS to enable polarization rotation from approximately counterclockwise circular polarization to linear polarization. Based on the identical epitaxial layer scheme, all of the PMC, DPS, and DFB laser can be integrated monolithically using only a single step of metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy and two steps of III V material dry etching. For the DFB-PMC device, a high TE to TM polarization conversion efficiency 98% over a wide range of DFB injection currents is reported at 1555 nm wavelength. For the DFB-PMC-DPS device, a 60 degree rotation of the Stokes vector was obtained on the Poincaré sphere with a range of bias voltage from 0 V to -4.0 V at IDFB is 170 mA.

Continuous integrate-and-fire (CIF) based models, which use a soft and monotonic alignment mechanism, have been well applied in non-autoregressive (NAR) speech recognition with competitive performance compared with other NAR methods. However, such an alignment learning strategy may suffer from an erroneous acoustic boundary estimation, severely hindering the convergence speed as well as the system performance. In this paper, we propose a boundary and context aware training approach for CIF based NAR models. Firstly, the connectionist temporal classification (CTC) spike information is utilized to guide the learning of acoustic boundaries in the CIF. Besides, an additional contextual decoder is introduced behind the CIF decoder, aiming to capture the linguistic dependencies within a sentence. Finally, we adopt a recently proposed Conformer architecture to improve the capacity of acoustic modeling. Experiments on the open-source Mandarin AISHELL-1 corpus show that the proposed method achieves a comparable character error rates (CERs) of 4.9% with only 1/24 latency compared with a state-of-the-art autoregressive (AR) Conformer model. Futhermore, when evaluating on an internal 7500 hours Mandarin corpus, our model still outperforms other NAR methods and even reaches the AR Conformer model on a challenging real-world noisy test set.

In this work, we propose TernaryBERT, which ternarizes the weights in a fine-tuned BERT model. Specifically, we use both approximation-based and loss-aware ternarization methods and empirically investigate the ternarization granularity of different parts of BERT. Moreover, to reduce the accuracy degradation caused by the lower capacity of low bits, we leverage the knowledge distillation technique in the training process. Experiments on the GLUE benchmark and SQuAD show that our proposed TernaryBERT outperforms the other BERT quantization methods, and even achieves comparable performance as the full-precision model while being 14.9x smaller.

Recent years have witnessed tremendous progress in single image super-resolution (SISR) owing to the deployment of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). For most existing methods, the computational cost of each SISR model is irrelevant to local image content, hardware platform and application scenario. Nonetheless, content and resource adaptive model is more preferred, and it is encouraging to apply simpler and efficient networks to the easier regions with less details and the scenarios with restricted efficiency constraints. In this paper, we take a step forward to address this issue by leveraging the adaptive inference networks for deep SISR (AdaDSR). In particular, our AdaDSR involves an SISR model as backbone and a lightweight adapter module which takes image features and resource constraint as input and predicts a map of local network depth. Adaptive inference can then be performed with the support of efficient sparse convolution, where only a fraction of the layers in the backbone is performed at a given position according to its predicted depth. The network learning can be formulated as the joint optimization of reconstruction and network depth losses. In the inference stage, the average depth can be flexibly tuned to meet a range of efficiency constraints. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and adaptability of our AdaDSR in contrast to its counterparts (e.g., EDSR and RCAN).

The distribution and appearance of nuclei are essential markers for the diagnosis and study of cancer. Despite the importance of nuclear morphology, there is a lack of large scale, accurate, publicly accessible nucleus segmentation data. To address this, we developed an analysis pipeline that segments nuclei in whole slide tissue images from multiple cancer types with a quality control process. We have generated nucleus segmentation results in 5,060 Whole Slide Tissue images from 10 cancer types in The Cancer Genome Atlas. One key component of our work is that we carried out a multi-level quality control process (WSI-level and image patch-level), to evaluate the quality of our segmentation results. The image patch-level quality control used manual segmentation ground truth data from 1,356 sampled image patches. The datasets we publish in this work consist of roughly 5 billion quality controlled nuclei from more than 5,060 TCGA WSIs from 10 different TCGA cancer types and 1,356 manually segmented TCGA image patches from the same 10 cancer types plus additional 4 cancer types. To build a sustainable and affordable space transportation system for human space exploration, the design and deployment of space infrastructures are critical; one attractive and promising infrastructure system is the in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) system. The design analysis and trade studies for ISRU systems require the consideration of not only the design of the ISRU plant itself but also other infrastructure systems (e.g., storage, power) and various ISRU architecture options (e.g., resource, location, technology). This paper proposes a system-level space infrastructure and its logistics design optimization framework to perform architecture trade studies. A new space infrastructure logistics optimization problem formulation is proposed that considers infrastructure subsystems' internal interactions and their external synergistic effects with space logistics simultaneously. Since the full-size version of this proposed problem formulation can be computationally prohibitive, a new multi-fidelity optimization formulation is developed by varying the granularity of the commodity type definition over the network graph; this multi-fidelity formulation can find an approximation solution to the full-size problem computationally efficiently with little sacrifice in the solution quality. The proposed problem formulation and method are applied to a multi-mission lunar exploration campaign to demonstrate their values.

Medical images such as 3D computerized tomography (CT) scans and pathology images, have hundreds of millions or billions of voxels/pixels. It is infeasible to train CNN models directly on such high resolution images, because neural activations of a single image do not fit in the memory of a single GPU/TPU, and naive data and model parallelism approaches do not work. Existing image analysis approaches alleviate this problem by crop** or down-sampling input images, which leads to complicated implementation and sub-optimal performance due to information loss. In this paper, we implement spatial partitioning, which internally distributes the input and output of convolutional layers across GPUs/TPUs. Our implementation is based on the Mesh-TensorFlow framework and the computation distribution is transparent to end users. With this technique, we train a 3D Unet on up to 512 by 512 by 512 resolution data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work for handling such high resolution images end-to-end.

Deep learning classifiers for characterization of whole slide tissue morphology require large volumes of annotated data to learn variations across different tissue and cancer types. As is well known, manual generation of digital pathology training data is time consuming and expensive. In this paper, we propose a semi-automated method for annotating a group of similar instances at once, instead of collecting only per-instance manual annotations. This allows for a much larger training set, that reflects visual variability across multiple cancer types and thus training of a single network which can be automatically applied to each cancer type without human adjustment. We apply our method to the important task of classifying Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TILs) in H&E images. Prior approaches were trained for individual cancer types, with smaller training sets and human-in-the-loop threshold adjustment. We utilize these thresholded results as large scale "semi-automatic" annotations. Combined with existing manual annotations, our trained deep networks are able to automatically produce better TIL prediction results in 12 cancer types, compared to the human-in-the-loop approach.

We have developed and evaluated convolutional neural network (CNN) analysis pipelines to generate combined maps of cancer regions and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in routine diagnostic breast cancer whole slide tissue images (WSIs). We produce interactive whole slide maps that provide 1) insight about the structural patterns and spatial distribution of lymphocytic infiltrates and 2) facilitate improved quantification of TILs. We evaluated both tumor and TIL analyses using three CNN networks - Resnet-34, VGG16 and Inception v4, and demonstrated that the results compared favorably to those obtained by what believe are the best published methods. Long Range (LoRa) has become one of the most popular Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) technologies, which provides a desirable trade-off among communication range, battery life, and deployment cost. In LoRa networks, several transmission parameters can be allocated to ensure efficient and reliable communication. For example, the configuration of the spreading factor allows tuning the data rate and the transmission distance. However, how to dynamically adjust the setting that minimizes the collision probability while meeting the required communication performance is an open challenge. This paper proposes a novel Data Rate and Channel Control (DRCC) scheme for LoRa networks so as to improve wireless resource utilization and support a massive number of LoRa nodes. The scheme estimates channel conditions based on the short-term Data Extraction Rate (DER), and opportunistically adjusts the spreading factor to adapt the variation of channel conditions. Furthermore, the channel control is carried out to balance the link load of all available channels with the global information of the channel usage, which is able to lower the access collisions under dense deployments. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed DRCC performs well on improving the reliability and capacity compared with other spreading factor allocation schemes in dense deployment scenarios.
