In this paper, we propose a data-driven framework for collaborative wideband spectrum sensing and scheduling for networked unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which act as the secondary users (SUs) to opportunistically utilize detected "spectrum holes". Our overall framework consists of three main stages. Firstly, in the model training stage, we explore dataset generation in a multi-cell environment and training a machine learning (ML) model using the federated learning (FL) architecture. Unlike the existing studies on FL for wireless that presume datasets are readily available for training, we propose a novel architecture that directly integrates wireless dataset generation, which involves capturing I/Q samples from over-the-air signals in a multi-cell environment, into the FL training process. Secondly, in the collaborative spectrum inference stage, we propose a collaborative spectrum fusion strategy that is compatible with the unmanned aircraft system traffic management (UTM) ecosystem. Finally, in the spectrum scheduling stage, we leverage reinforcement learning (RL) solutions to dynamically allocate the detected spectrum holes to the secondary users. To evaluate the proposed methods, we establish a comprehensive simulation framework that generates a near-realistic synthetic dataset using MATLAB LTE toolbox by incorporating base-station~(BS) locations in a chosen area of interest, performing ray-tracing, and emulating the primary users channel usage in terms of I/Q samples. This evaluation methodology provides a flexible framework to generate large spectrum datasets that could be used for develo** ML/AI-based spectrum management solutions for aerial devices.

In the swift evolution of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) within intelligent environments, especially in the industrial domain shaped by Industry 4.0, the surge in development brings forth unprecedented security challenges. This paper explores the intricate security issues of Industrial CPSs (ICPSs), with a specific focus on the unique threats presented by intelligent attackers capable of directly compromising the controller, thereby posing a direct risk to physical security. Within the framework of hierarchical control and incentive feedback Stackelberg game, we design a resilient leading controller (leader) that is adaptive to a compromised following controller (follower) such that the compromised follower acts cooperatively with the leader, aligning its strategies with the leader's objective to achieve a team-optimal solution. First, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of an incentive Stackelberg solution when system dynamics are known. Then, we propose a Q-learning-based Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) approach, and corresponding algorithms for the online resolution of the incentive Stackelberg solution without requiring prior knowledge of system dynamics. Last but not least, we prove the convergence of our approach to the optimum.

Semantic communication is focused on optimizing the exchange of information by transmitting only the most relevant data required to convey the intended message to the receiver and achieve the desired communication goal. For example, if we consider images as the information and the goal of the communication is object detection at the receiver side, the semantic of information would be the objects in each image. Therefore, by only transferring the semantics of images we can achieve the communication goal. In this paper, we propose a design framework for implementing semantic-aware and goal-oriented communication of images. To achieve this, we first define the baseline problem as a set of mathematical problems that can be optimized to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the communication system. We consider two scenarios in which either the data rate or the error at the receiver is the limiting constraint. Our proposed system model and solution is inspired by the concept of auto-encoders, where the encoder and the decoder are respectively implemented at the transmitter and receiver to extract semantic information for specific object detection goals. Our numerical results validate the proposed design framework to achieve low error or near-optimal in a goal-oriented communication system while reducing the amount of data transfers.

In the field of medical sciences, reliable detection and classification of brain tumors from images remains a formidable challenge due to the rarity of tumors within the population of patients. Therefore, the ability to detect tumors in anomaly scenarios is paramount for ensuring timely interventions and improved patient outcomes. This study addresses the issue by leveraging deep learning (DL) techniques to detect and classify brain tumors in challenging situations. The curated data set from the National Brain Map** Lab (NBML) comprises 81 patients, including 30 Tumor cases and 51 Normal cases. The detection and classification pipelines are separated into two consecutive tasks. The detection phase involved comprehensive data analysis and pre-processing to modify the number of image samples and the number of patients of each class to anomaly distribution (9 Normal per 1 Tumor) to comply with real world scenarios. Next, in addition to common evaluation metrics for the testing, we employed a novel performance evaluation method called Patient to Patient (PTP), focusing on the realistic evaluation of the model. In the detection phase, we fine-tuned a YOLOv8n detection model to detect the tumor region. Subsequent testing and evaluation yielded competitive performance both in Common Evaluation Metrics and PTP metrics. Furthermore, using the Data Efficient Image Transformer (DeiT) module, we distilled a Vision Transformer (ViT) model from a fine-tuned ResNet152 as a teacher in the classification phase. This approach demonstrates promising strides in reliable tumor detection and classification, offering potential advancements in tumor diagnosis for real-world medical imaging scenarios.

Bone degradation, especially for astronauts in microgravity conditions, is crucial for space exploration missions since the lower applied external forces accelerate the diminution in bone stiffness and strength substantially. Although existing computational models help us understand this phenomenon and possibly restrict its effect in the future, they are time-consuming to simulate the changes in the bones, not just the bone microstructures, of each individual in detail. In this study, a robust yet fast computational method to predict and visualize bone degradation has been developed. Our deep-learning method, TransVNet, can take in different 3D voxelized images and predict their evolution throughout months utilizing a hybrid 3D-CNN-VisionTransformer autoencoder architecture. Because of limited available experimental data and challenges of obtaining new samples, a digital twin dataset of diverse and initial bone-like microstructures was generated to train our TransVNet on the evolution of the 3D images through a previously developed degradation model for microgravity.

The increasing trend in adopting electric vehicles (EVs) will significantly impact the residential electricity demand, which results in an increased risk of transformer overload in the distribution grid. To mitigate such risks, there are urgent needs to develop effective EV charging controllers. Currently, the majority of the EV charge controllers are based on a centralized approach for managing individual EVs or a group of EVs. In this paper, we introduce a decentralized Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) charging framework that prioritizes the preservation of privacy for EV owners. We employ the Centralized Training Decentralized Execution-Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (CTDE-DDPG) scheme, which provides valuable information to users during training while maintaining privacy during execution. Our results demonstrate that the CTDE framework improves the performance of the charging network by reducing the network costs. Moreover, we show that the Peak-to-Average Ratio (PAR) of the total demand is reduced, which, in turn, reduces the risk of transformer overload during the peak hours.

In this paper, we present an analytical framework to explore the interplay of signal interference and transmission queue management, and their impacts on the performance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) when operating in the unlicensed spectrum bands. In particular, we develop a comprehensive framework to investigate the impact of other interference links on the UAV as it communicates with the ground users. To this end, we provide closed-form expressions for packet drop probabilities in the queue due to buffer overflow or large queuing delay, which are expressed in terms of a transmission policy as a function of the channel fading threshold $β$. The overall packet loss caused either by interference signals or queuing packet drop is obtained, which, in turn, yields in obtaining the expected throughput performance. Through extensive numerical results, we investigate the impact of the channel fading threshold $β$, which plays an important role in balancing the trade-offs between packet loss due to queue drop or transmission error due to large interference levels.

Renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, are increasingly being integrated into smart grid systems. However, when compared to traditional energy resources, the unpredictability of renewable energy generation poses significant challenges for both electricity providers and utility companies. Furthermore, the large-scale integration of distributed energy resources (such as PV systems) creates new challenges for energy management in microgrids. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel framework with two objectives: (i) combating uncertainty of renewable energy in smart grid by leveraging time-series forecasting with Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) solutions, and (ii) establishing distributed and dynamic decision-making framework with multi-agent reinforcement learning using Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) algorithm. The proposed framework considers both objectives concurrently to fully integrate them, while considering both wholesale and retail markets, thereby enabling efficient energy management in the presence of uncertain and distributed renewable energy sources. Through extensive numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed solution significantly improves the profit of load serving entities (LSE) by providing a more accurate wind generation forecast. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that households with PV and battery installations can increase their profits by using intelligent battery charge/discharge actions determined by the DDPG agents.

This paper presents a multi-agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) framework for autonomous control and integration of renewable energy resources into smart power grid systems. In particular, the proposed framework jointly considers demand response (DR) and distributed energy management (DEM) for residential end-users. DR has a widely recognized potential for improving power grid stability and reliability, while at the same time reducing end-users energy bills. However, the conventional DR techniques come with several shortcomings, such as the inability to handle operational uncertainties while incurring end-user disutility, which prevents widespread adoption in real-world applications. The proposed framework addresses these shortcomings by implementing DR and DEM based on real-time pricing strategy that is achieved using deep reinforcement learning. Furthermore, this framework enables the power grid service provider to leverage distributed energy resources (i.e., PV rooftop panels and battery storage) as dispatchable assets to support the smart grid during peak hours, thus achieving management of distributed energy resources. Simulation results based on the Deep Q-Network (DQN) demonstrate significant improvements of the 24-hour accumulative profit for both prosumers and the power grid service provider, as well as major reductions in the utilization of the power grid reserve generators.

In this paper, we consider the multi-user scheduling problem in millimeter wave (mmWave) video streaming networks, which comprise a streaming server and several users, each requesting a video stream with a different resolution. The main objective is to optimize the long-term average quality of experience (QoE) for all users. We tackle this problem by considering the physical layer characteristics of the mmWave network, including the beam alignment overhead due to pencil-beams. To develop an efficient scheduling policy, we leverage the contextual multi-armed bandit (MAB) models to propose a beam alignment overhead and buffer predictive streaming solution, dubbed B2P-Stream. The proposed B2P-Stream algorithm optimally balances the trade-off between the overhead and users' buffer levels and improves the QoE by reducing the beam alignment overhead for users of higher resolutions. We also provide a theoretical guarantee for our proposed method and prove that it guarantees a sub-linear regret bound. Finally, we examine our proposed framework through extensive simulations. We provide a detailed comparison of the B2P-Stream against uniformly random and Round-robin (RR) policies and show that it outperforms both of them in providing a better QoE and fairness. We also analyze the scalability and robustness of the B2P-Stream algorithm with different network configurations.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging has become a modality with superior power for the diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. One of the essential basic quality controls of CMR images is to investigate the complete cardiac coverage, which is necessary for the volumetric and functional assessment. This study examines the full cardiac coverage using a 3D convolutional model and then reduces the number of false predictions using an innovative salient region detection model. Salient regions are extracted from the short-axis cine CMR stacks using a three-step proposed algorithm. Combining the 3D CNN baseline model with the proposed salient region detection model provides a cascade detector that can reduce the number of false negatives of the baseline model. The results obtained on the images of over 6,200 participants of the UK Biobank population cohort study show the superiority of the proposed model over the previous state-of-the-art studies. The dataset is the largest regarding the number of participants to control the cardiac coverage. The accuracy of the baseline model in identifying the presence/absence of basal/apical slices is 96.25\% and 94.51\%, respectively, which increases to 96.88\% and 95.72\% after improving using the proposed salient region detection model. Using the salient region detection model by forcing the baseline model to focus on the most informative areas of the images can help the model correct misclassified samples' predictions. The proposed fully automated model's performance indicates that this model can be used in image quality control in population cohort datasets and also real-time post-imaging quality assessments.

The latest video coding standard, Versatile Video Coding (VVC), achieves almost twice coding efficiency compared to its predecessor, the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). However, achieving this efficiency (for intra coding) requires 31x computational complexity compared to HEVC, making it challenging for low power and real-time applications. This paper, proposes a novel machine learning approach that jointly and separately employs two modalities of features, to simplify the intra coding decision. First a set of features are extracted that use the existing DCT core of VVC, to assess the texture characteristics, and forms the first modality of data. This produces high quality features with almost no overhead. The distribution of intra modes at the neighboring blocks is also used to form the second modality of data, which provides statistical information about the frame. Second, a two-step feature reduction method is designed that reduces the size of feature set, such that a lightweight model with a limited number of parameters can be used to learn the intra mode decision task. Third, three separate training strategies are proposed (1) an offline training strategy using the first (single) modality of data, (2) an online training strategy that uses the second (single) modality, and (3) a mixed online-offline strategy that uses bimodal learning. Finally, a low-complexity encoding algorithms is proposed based on the proposed learning strategies. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed methods can reduce up to 24% of encoding time, with a negligible loss of coding efficiency. Moreover, it is demonstrated how a bimodal learning strategy can boost the performance of learning. Lastly, the proposed method has a very low computational overhead (0.2%), and uses existing components of a VVC encoder, which makes it much more practical compared to competing solutions.

Background and Objective: The Acetabular version, an essential factor in total hip arthroplasty, is measured by CT scan as the gold standard. The dose of radiation and expensiveness of CT make anterior-posterior pelvic radiograph an appropriate alternative procedure. In this study, we applied a deep learning approach on anteroposterior pelvic X-rays to measure anatomical version, eliminating the necessity of using Computed tomography scan. Methods: The right and left acetabular version angles of the hips of 300 patients are computed using their CT images. The proposed deep learning model, Attention on Pretrained-VGG16 for Bone Age, is applied to the AP images of the included population. The age and gender of these people are added as two other inputs to the last fully connected layer of attention mechanism. As the output, the angles of both hips are predicted. Results: The angles of hips computed on CT increase as people get older with the mean values of 16.54 and 16.11 (right and left angles) for men and 20.61 and 19.55 for women in our dataset. The predicted errors in the estimation of right and left angles using the proposed method of deep learning are in the accurate region of error (<=3 degrees) which shows the ability of the proposed method in measuring anatomical version based on AP images. Conclusion: The suggested algorithm, applying pre-trained vgg16 on the AP images of the pelvis of patients followed by an attention model considering age and gender of patients, can assess version accurately using only AP radiographs while obviating the need for CT scan. The applied technique of estimation of anatomical acetabular version based on AP pelvic images using DL approaches, to the best of authors' knowledge, has not been published yet.

Device-to-device (D2D) communications is expected to be a critical enabler of distributed computing in edge networks at scale. A key challenge in providing this capability is the requirement for judicious management of the heterogeneous communication and computation resources that exist at the edge to meet processing needs. In this paper, we develop an optimization methodology that considers the network topology jointly with device and network resource allocation to minimize total D2D overhead, which we quantify in terms of time and energy required for task processing. Variables in our model include task assignment, CPU allocation, subchannel selection, and beamforming design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless devices. We propose two methods to solve the resulting non-convex mixed integer program: semi-exhaustive search optimization, which represents a "best-effort" at obtaining the optimal solution, and efficient alternate optimization, which is more computationally efficient. As a component of these two methods, we develop a novel coordinated beamforming algorithm which we show obtains the optimal beamformer for a common receiver characteristic. Through numerical experiments, we find that our methodology yields substantial improvements in network overhead compared with local computation and partially optimized methods, which validates our joint optimization approach. Further, we find that the efficient alternate optimization scales well with the number of nodes, and thus can be a practical solution for D2D computing in large networks.

While the next generation video compression standard, Versatile Video Coding (VVC), provides a superior compression efficiency, its computational complexity dramatically increases. This paper thoroughly analyzes this complexity for both encoder and decoder of VVC Test Model 6, by quantifying the complexity break-down for each coding tool and measuring the complexity and memory requirements for VVC encoding/decoding. These extensive analyses are performed for six video sequences of 720p, 1080p, and 2160p, under Low-Delay (LD), Random-Access (RA), and All-Intra (AI) conditions (a total of 320 encoding/decoding). Results indicate that the VVC encoder and decoder are 5x and 1.5x more complex compared to HEVC in LD, and 31x and 1.8x in AI, respectively. Detailed analysis of coding tools reveals that in LD on average, motion estimation tools with 53%, transformation and quantization with 22%, and entropy coding with 7% dominate the encoding complexity. In decoding, loop filters with 30%, motion compensation with 20%, and entropy decoding with 16%, are the most complex modules. Moreover, the required memory bandwidth for VVC encoding/decoding are measured through memory profiling, which are 30x and 3x of HEVC. The reported results and insights are a guide for future research and implementations of energy-efficient VVC encoder/decoder.

In this paper, we study the distributed computational capabilities of device-to-device (D2D) networks. A key characteristic of D2D networks is that their topologies are reconfigurable to cope with network demands. For distributed computing, resource management is challenging due to limited network and communication resources, leading to inter-channel interference. To overcome this, recent research has addressed the problems of wireless scheduling, subchannel allocation, power allocation, and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signal design, but has not considered them jointly. In this paper, unlike previous mobile edge computing (MEC) approaches, we propose a joint optimization of wireless MIMO signal design and network resource allocation to maximize energy efficiency. Given that the resulting problem is a non-convex mixed integer program (MIP) which is prohibitive to solve at scale, we decompose its solution into two parts: (i) a resource allocation subproblem, which optimizes the link selection and subchannel allocations, and (ii) MIMO signal design subproblem, which optimizes the transmit beamformer, transmit power, and receive combiner. Simulation results using wireless edge topologies show that our method yields substantial improvements in energy efficiency compared with cases of no offloading and partially optimized methods and that the efficiency scales well with the size of the network.

In this paper, we propose to use the discretized version of the so-called Enhanced Gaussian Noise (EGN) model to estimate the non-linearity effects of fiber on the performance of optical coherent and uncompensated transmission (CUT) systems. By computing the power of non-linear interference noise and considering optical amplifier noise, we obtain the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio and achievable rate of CUT. To allocate the power of each CUT channel, we consider two optimization problems with the objectives of maximizing minimum SNR margin and achievable rate. We show that by using the discretized EGN model, the complexity of the introduced optimization problems is reduced compared with the existing optimization problems developed based on the so-called discretized Gaussian Noise (GN) model. In addition, the optimization based on the discretized EGN model leads to a better SNR and achievable rate. We validate our analytical results with simulations and experimental results. We simulate a five-channel coherent system on OptiSystem software, where a close agreement is observed between optimizations and simulations. Furthermore, we measured SNR of commercial 100Gbps coherent transmitter over 300 km single-mode fiber (SMF) and non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF), by considering single-channel and three-channel coherent systems. We observe there are performance gaps between experimental and analytical results, which is mainly due to other sources of noise such as transmitter imperfection noise, thermal noise, and shot noise, in experiments. By including these sources of noise in the analytical model, the gaps between analytical and experimental results are reduced.

In this system, to detect the falling sleep state of the driver as the sign of drowsiness, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are used with regarding the two goals of real-time application, including high accuracy and fastness. Three networks introduced as a potential network for eye status classifcation in which one of them is a Fully Designed Neural Network (FD-NN) and others use Transfer Learning in VGG16 and VGG19 with extra designed layers (TL-VGG). Lack of an available and accurate eye dataset strongly feels in the area of eye closure detection. Therefore, a new comprehensive dataset proposed. The experimental results show the high accuracy and low computational complexity of the eye closure estimation and the ability of the proposed framework on drowsiness detection.

We investigate the problem of computation offloading in a mobile edge computing architecture, where multiple energy-constrained users compete to offload their computational tasks to multiple servers through a shared wireless medium. We propose a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning algorithm, where each server is equipped with an agent, observing the status of its associated users and selecting the best user for offloading at each step. We consider computation time (i.e., task completion time) and system lifetime as two key performance indicators, and we numerically demonstrate that our approach outperforms baseline algorithms in terms of the trade-off between computation time and system lifetime.

This study is aimed at develo** such as methodology through combining two major matrix methods, namely, Design Structure Matrix (DSM) and Interface Structure Matrix (ISM). Through this paper, a business process modeling method is applied to turn a real work project to a process model. Then that process model is written in two various matrix forms of DSM and ISM. These two matrices are analyzed by two types of algorithm for extracting activity levels and sub-processes. In the end, a Mixed Matrix Model (MMM) is built upon these activity levels and sub-processes, which can be used as a framework for the engineering of real-world systems.

The proposed solution is based on spiking neural networks which are the third generation of neural networks. In specific, we employ spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP), and reward-modulated STDP (R-STDP), in which the model weights are trained according to the timings of spike signals, and reward or punishment signals. Experiments show that the proposed solution is suitable for real-time operation, achieves comparable accuracy with respect to previous methods, and more importantly, its energy consumption is significantly smaller than previous neural network based solutions.
