In this paper, a novel environment-embedded vehicular channel model is proposed by scatterer recognition from light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point clouds via Synesthesia of Machines (SoM). To provide a robust data foundation, a new intelligent sensing-communication integration dataset in vehicular urban scenarios is constructed. Based on the constructed dataset, the complex SoM mechanism, i.e., map** relationship between scatterers in electromagnetic space and LiDAR point clouds in physical environment, is explored via multilayer perceptron (MLP) with electromagnetic propagation mechanism. By using LiDAR point clouds to implement scatterer recognition, channel non-stationarity and consistency are modeled in an environment-embedded manner. Using ray-tracing (RT)-based results as the ground truth, the scatterer recognition accuracy exceeds 90%. The accuracy of the proposed model is further verified by the close fit between simulation results and RT results.

Achieving global space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) access only with CubeSats presents significant challenges such as the access sustainability limitations in specific regions (e.g., polar regions) and the energy efficiency limitations in CubeSats. To tackle these problems, high-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (HALE-UAVs) can complement these CubeSat shortcomings for providing cooperatively global access sustainability and energy efficiency. However, as the number of CubeSats and HALE-UAVs, increases, the scheduling dimension of each ground station (GS) increases. As a result, each GS can fall into the curse of dimensionality, and this challenge becomes one major hurdle for efficient global access. Therefore, this paper provides a quantum multi-agent reinforcement Learning (QMARL)-based method for scheduling between GSs and CubeSats/HALE-UAVs in order to improve global access availability and energy efficiency. The main reason why the QMARL-based scheduler can be beneficial is that the algorithm facilitates a logarithmic-scale reduction in scheduling action dimensions, which is one critical feature as the number of CubeSats and HALE-UAVs expands. Additionally, individual GSs have different traffic demands depending on their locations and characteristics, thus it is essential to provide differentiated access services. The superiority of the proposed scheduler is validated through data-intensive experiments in realistic CubeSat/HALE-UAV settings.

With the rapidly increasing number of bandwidth-intensive terminals capable of intelligent computing and communication, such as smart devices equipped with shallow neural network models, the complexity of multiple access for these intelligent terminals is increasing due to the dynamic network environment and ubiquitous connectivity in 6G systems. Traditional multiple access (MA) design and optimization methods are gradually losing ground to artificial intelligence (AI) techniques that have proven their superiority in handling complexity. AI-empowered MA and its optimization strategies aimed at achieving high Quality-of-Service (QoS) are attracting more attention, especially in the area of latency-sensitive applications in 6G systems. In this work, we aim to: 1) present the development and comparative evaluation of AI-enabled MA; 2) provide a timely survey focusing on spectrum sensing, protocol design, and optimization for AI-empowered MA; and 3) explore the potential use cases of AI-empowered MA in the typical application scenarios within 6G systems. Specifically, we first present a unified framework of AI-empowered MA for 6G systems by incorporating various promising machine learning techniques in spectrum sensing, resource allocation, MA protocol design, and optimization. We then introduce AI-empowered MA spectrum sensing related to spectrum sharing and spectrum interference management. Next, we discuss the AI-empowered MA protocol designs and implementation methods by reviewing and comparing the state-of-the-art, and we further explore the optimization algorithms related to dynamic resource management, parameter adjustment, and access scheme switching. Finally, we discuss the current challenges, point out open issues, and outline potential future research directions in this field.

In disaster scenarios, conventional terrestrial multi-access edge computing (MEC) paradigms, which rely on fixed infrastructure, may become unavailable due to infrastructure damage. With high-probability line-of-sight (LoS) communication, flexible mobility, and low cost, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted MEC is emerging as a new promising paradigm to provide edge computing services for ground user devices (UDs) in disaster-stricken areas. However, the limited battery capacity, computing resources, and spectrum resources also pose serious challenges for UAV-assisted MEC, which can potentially shorten the service time of UAVs and degrade the quality of experience (QoE) of UDs without an effective control approach. To this end, in this work, we first present a hierarchical architecture of multiple-UAV-assisted MEC networks that enables the coordinated provision of edge computing services by multiple UAVs. Then, we formulate a joint task offloading, resource allocation, and UAV trajectory planning optimization problem (JTRTOP) to maximize the QoE of UDs while considering the energy consumption constraints of UAVs. Since the problem is proven to be a future-dependent and NP-hard problem, we propose a novel online joint task offloading, resource allocation, and UAV trajectory planning approach (OJTRTA) to solve the problem. Specifically, the JTRTOP is first transformed into a per-slot real-time optimization problem (PROP) using the Lyapunov optimization framework. Then, a two-stage optimization method based on game theory and convex optimization is proposed to solve the PROP. Simulation results provide empirical evidence supporting the superior system performance of the proposed OJTRTA in comparison to alternative approaches.

Due to the advantages of high mobility and easy deployment, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely applied in both military and civilian fields. In order to strengthen the flight surveillance of UAVs and guarantee the airspace safety, UAVs can be equipped with the automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) system, which periodically sends flight information to other aircrafts and ground stations (GSs). However, due to the limited resource of channel capacity, UAVs equipped with ADS-B results in the interference between UAVs and civil aircrafts (CAs), which further impacts the accuracy of received information at GSs. In detail, the channel capacity is mainly affected by the density of aircrafts and the transmitting power of ADS-B. Hence, based on the three-dimensional poisson point process, this work leverages the stochastic geometry theory to build a model of the coexistence of UAVs and CAs and analyze the interference performance of ADS-B monitoring system. From simulation results, we reveal the effects of transmitting power, density, threshold and pathloss on the performance of the ADS-B monitoring system. Besides, we provide the suggested transmitting power and density for the safe coexistence of UAVs and CAs.

This paper considers a resource allocation problem where several Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices send data to a base station (BS) with or without the help of the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted cellular network. The objective is to maximize the sum rate of all IoT devices by finding the optimal RIS and spreading factor (SF) for each device. Since these IoT devices lack prior information on the RISs or the channel state information (CSI), a distributed resource allocation framework with low complexity and learning features is required to achieve this goal. Therefore, we model this problem as a two-stage multi-player multi-armed bandit (MPMAB) framework to learn the optimal RIS and SF sequentially. Then, we put forth an exploration and exploitation boosting (E2Boost) algorithm to solve this two-stage MPMAB problem by combining the $ε$-greedy algorithm, Thompson sampling (TS) algorithm, and non-cooperation game method. We derive an upper regret bound for the proposed algorithm, i.e., $\mathcal{O}(\log^{1+δ}_2 T)$, increasing logarithmically with the time horizon $T$. Numerical results show that the E2Boost algorithm has the best performance among the existing methods and exhibits a fast convergence rate. More importantly, the proposed algorithm is not sensitive to the number of combinations of the RISs and SFs thanks to the two-stage allocation mechanism, which can benefit high-density networks.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a critical enabling technology for the next-generation wireless communication, which can realize location/motion detection of surroundings with communication devices. This additional sensing capability leads to a substantial network quality gain and expansion of the service scenarios. As the system evolves to millimeter wave (mmWave) and above, ISAC can realize simultaneous communications and sensing of the ultra-high throughput level and radar resolution with compact design, which relies on directional beamforming against the path loss. With the multi-beam technology, the dual functions of ISAC can be seamlessly incorporated at the beamspace level by unleashing the potential of joint beamforming. Multi-modal ophthalmic image classification plays a key role in diagnosing eye diseases, as it integrates information from different sources to complement their respective performances. However, recent improvements have mainly focused on accuracy, often neglecting the importance of confidence and robustness in predictions for diverse modalities. In this study, we propose a novel multi-modality evidential fusion pipeline for eye disease screening. It provides a measure of confidence for each modality and elegantly integrates the multi-modality information using a multi-distribution fusion perspective. Specifically, our method first utilizes normal inverse gamma prior distributions over pre-trained models to learn both aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty for uni-modality. Then, the normal inverse gamma distribution is analyzed as the Student's t distribution. Furthermore, within a confidence-aware fusion framework, we propose a mixture of Student's t distributions to effectively integrate different modalities, imparting the model with heavy-tailed properties and enhancing its robustness and reliability. More importantly, the confidence-aware multi-modality ranking regularization term induces the model to more reasonably rank the noisy single-modal and fused-modal confidence, leading to improved reliability and accuracy. Experimental results on both public and internal datasets demonstrate that our model excels in robustness, particularly in challenging scenarios involving Gaussian noise and modality missing conditions. Moreover, our model exhibits strong generalization capabilities to out-of-distribution data, underscoring its potential as a promising solution for multimodal eye disease screening.

Digital and analog semantic communications (SemCom) face inherent limitations such as data security concerns in analog SemCom, as well as leveling-off and cliff-edge effects in digital SemCom. In order to overcome these challenges, we propose a novel SemCom framework and a corresponding system called HDA-DeepSC, which leverages a hybrid digital-analog approach for multimedia transmission. This is achieved through the introduction of digital-analog allocation and fusion modules. To strike a balance between data rate and distortion, we design new loss functions that take into account long-distance dependencies in the semantic distortion constraint, essential information recovery in the channel distortion constraint, and optimal bit stream generation in the rate constraint. Additionally, we propose denoising diffusion-based signal detection techniques, which involve carefully designed variance schedules and sampling algorithms to refine transmitted signals. Through extensive numerical experiments, we will demonstrate that HDA-DeepSC exhibits robustness to channel variations and is capable of supporting various communication scenarios. Our proposed framework outperforms existing benchmarks in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio and multi-scale structural similarity, showcasing its superiority in semantic communication quality.

Extended reality (XR) is at the center of attraction in the research community due to the emergence of augmented, mixed, and virtual reality applications. The performance of such applications needs to be uptight to maintain the requirements of latency, energy consumption, and freshness of data. Therefore, a comprehensive performance analysis model is required to assess the effectiveness of an XR application but is challenging to design due to the dependence of the performance metrics on several difficult-to-model parameters, such as computing resources and hardware utilization of XR and edge devices, which are controlled by both their operating systems and the application itself. Moreover, the heterogeneity in devices and wireless access networks brings additional challenges in modeling. In this paper, we propose a novel modeling framework for performance analysis of XR applications considering edge-assisted wireless networks and validate the model with experimental data collected from testbeds designed specifically for XR applications. In addition, we present the challenges associated with performance analysis modeling and present methods to overcome them in detail. Finally, the performance evaluation shows that the proposed analytical model can analyze XR applications' performance with high accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art analytical models.

This paper presents an approach for energy-neutral Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios where the IoT devices (IoTDs) rely entirely on their energy harvesting capabilities to sustain operation. We use a Markov chain to represent the operation and transmission states of the IoTDs, a modulated Poisson process to model their energy harvesting process, and a discrete-time Markov chain to model their battery state. The aim is to efficiently manage the duty cycling of the IoTDs, so as to prolong their battery life and reduce instances of low-energy availability. We propose a duty-cycling management based on K- nearest neighbors, aiming to strike a trade-off between energy efficiency and detection accuracy. This is done by incorporating spatial and temporal correlations among IoTDs' activity, as well as their energy harvesting capabilities. We also allow the base station to wake up specific IoTDs if more information about an event is needed upon initial detection. Our proposed scheme shows significant improvements in energy savings and performance, with up to 11 times lower misdetection probability and 50\% lower energy consumption for high-density scenarios compared to a random duty cycling benchmark.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarms play an effective role in timely data collection from ground sensors in remote and hostile areas. Optimizing the collective behavior of swarms can improve data collection performance. This paper puts forth a new mean field flight resource allocation optimization to minimize age of information (AoI) of sensory data, where balancing the trade-off between the UAVs movements and AoI is formulated as a mean field game (MFG). The MFG optimization yields an expansive solution space encompassing continuous state and action, resulting in significant computational complexity. To address practical situations, we propose, a new mean field hybrid proximal policy optimization (MF-HPPO) scheme to minimize the average AoI by optimizing the UAV's trajectories and data collection scheduling of the ground sensors given mixed continuous and discrete actions. Furthermore, a long short term memory (LSTM) is leveraged in MF-HPPO to predict the time-varying network state and stabilize the training. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed MF-HPPO reduces the average AoI by up to 45 percent and 57 percent in the considered simulation setting, as compared to multi-agent deep Q-learning (MADQN) method and non-learning random algorithm, respectively.

Optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) has attracted increasing attention due to its capability of overcoming signal blockages in visible light communication (VLC), an emerging technology for the next-generation advanced transceivers. However, current works on OIRS predominantly assume known channel state information (CSI), which is essential to practical OIRS configuration. To bridge such a gap, this paper proposes a new and customized channel estimation protocol for OIRSs under the alignment-based channel model. Specifically, we first unveil OIRS spatial and temporal coherence characteristics and derive the coherence distance and the coherence time in closed form. Next, to achieve fast beam alignment over different coherence time, we propose to dynamically tune the rotational angles of the OIRS reflecting elements following a geometric optics-based non-uniform codebook. Given the above beam alignment, we propose an efficient joint space-time sampling-based algorithm to estimate the OIRS channel. In particular, we divide the OIRS into multiple subarrays based on the coherence distance and sequentially estimate their associated CSI, followed by a spacetime interpolation to retrieve full CSI for other non-aligned transceiver antennas. Numerical results validate our theoretical analyses and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed OIRS channel estimation scheme as compared to other benchmark schemes.

Groundbreaking applications such as ChatGPT have heightened research interest in generative artificial intelligence (GAI). Essentially, GAI excels not only in content generation but also in signal processing, offering support for wireless sensing. Hence, we introduce a novel GAI-assisted human flow detection system (G-HFD). Rigorously, G-HFD first uses channel state information (CSI) to estimate the velocity and acceleration of propagation path length change of the human-induced reflection (HIR). Then, given the strong inference ability of the diffusion model, we propose a unified weighted conditional diffusion model (UW-CDM) to denoise the estimation results, enabling the detection of the number of targets. Next, we use the CSI obtained by a uniform linear array with wavelength spacing to estimate the HIR's time of flight and direction of arrival (DoA). In this process, UW-CDM solves the problem of ambiguous DoA spectrum, ensuring accurate DoA estimation. Finally, through clustering, G-HFD determines the number of subflows and the number of targets in each subflow, i.e., the subflow size. The evaluation based on practical downlink communication signals shows G-HFD's accuracy of subflow size detection can reach 91%. This validates its effectiveness and underscores the significant potential of GAI in the context of wireless sensing.

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the NTIRE 2024 challenge, focusing on efficient single-image super-resolution (ESR) solutions and their outcomes. The task of this challenge is to super-resolve an input image with a magnification factor of x4 based on pairs of low and corresponding high-resolution images. The primary objective is to develop networks that optimize various aspects such as runtime, parameters, and FLOPs, while still maintaining a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of approximately 26.90 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_valid dataset and 26.99 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_test dataset. In addition, this challenge has 4 tracks including the main track (overall performance), sub-track 1 (runtime), sub-track 2 (FLOPs), and sub-track 3 (parameters). In the main track, all three metrics (ie runtime, FLOPs, and parameter count) were considered. The ranking of the main track is calculated based on a weighted sum-up of the scores of all other sub-tracks. In sub-track 1, the practical runtime performance of the submissions was evaluated, and the corresponding score was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 2, the number of FLOPs was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding FLOPs was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 3, the number of parameters was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding parameters was used to determine the ranking. RLFN is set as the baseline for efficiency measurement. The challenge had 262 registered participants, and 34 teams made valid submissions. They gauge the state-of-the-art in efficient single-image super-resolution. In this letter, we investigate the impact of DISCO jamming attacks launched by a DRISbased fully-passive jammer (FPJ) on an ISAC system. Specifically, an ISAC problem formulation and a corresponding waveform optimization are presented in which the ISAC waveform design considers the trade-off between the S&C performance and is formulated as a Pareto optimization problem. Moreover, a theoretical analysis is conducted to quantify the impact of DISCO jamming attacks. Numerical results are presented to evaluate the S&C performance under DISCO jamming attacks and to validate the derived theoretical analysis.

Semantic Communication (SemCom) is envisaged as the next-generation paradigm to address challenges stemming from the conflicts between the increasing volume of transmission data and the scarcity of spectrum resources. However, existing SemCom systems face drawbacks, such as low explainability, modality rigidity, and inadequate reconstruction functionality. Recognizing the transformative capabilities of AI-generated content (AIGC) technologies in content generation, this paper explores a pioneering approach by integrating them into SemCom to address the aforementioned challenges. We employ a three-layer model to illustrate the proposed AIGC-assisted SemCom (AIGC-SCM) architecture, emphasizing its clear deviation from existing SemCom. Grounded in this model, we investigate various AIGC technologies with the potential to augment SemCom's performance. In alignment with SemCom's goal of conveying semantic meanings, we also introduce the new evaluation methods for our AIGC-SCM system. Subsequently, we explore communication scenarios where our proposed AIGC-SCM can realize its potential. For practical implementation, we construct a detailed integration workflow and conduct a case study in a virtual reality image transmission scenario. The results demonstrate our ability to maintain a high degree of alignment between the reconstructed content and the original source information, while substantially minimizing the data volume required for transmission. These findings pave the way for further enhancements in communication efficiency and the improvement of Quality of Service. At last, we present future directions for AIGC-SCM studies.

Federated learning (FL) is an appealing paradigm for learning a global model among distributed clients while preserving data privacy. Driven by the demand for high-quality user experiences, evaluating the well-trained global model after the FL process is crucial. In this paper, we propose a closed-loop model analytics framework that allows for effective evaluation of the trained global model using clients' local data. To address the challenges posed by system and data heterogeneities in the FL process, we study a goal-directed client selection problem based on the model analytics framework by selecting a subset of clients for the model training. This problem is formulated as a stochastic multi-armed bandit (SMAB) problem. We first put forth a quick initial upper confidence bound (Quick-Init UCB) algorithm to solve this SMAB problem under the federated analytics (FA) framework. Then, we further propose a belief propagation-based UCB (BP-UCB) algorithm under the democratized analytics (DA) framework. Moreover, we derive two regret upper bounds for the proposed algorithms, which increase logarithmically over the time horizon. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms achieve nearly optimal performance, with a gap of less than 1.44% and 3.12% under the FA and DA frameworks, respectively.

In this paper, we investigate the sparse channel estimation in holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) systems. The conventional angular-domain representation fails to capture the continuous angular power spectrum characterized by the spatially-stationary electromagnetic random field, thus leading to the ambiguous detection of the significant angular power, which is referred to as the power leakage. To tackle this challenge, the HMIMO channel is represented in the wavenumber domain for exploring its cluster-dominated sparsity. Specifically, a finite set of Fourier harmonics acts as a series of sampling probes to encapsulate the integral of the power spectrum over specific angular regions. This technique effectively eliminates power leakage resulting from power mismatches induced by the use of discrete angular-domain probes. Next, the channel estimation problem is recast as a sparse recovery of the significant angular power spectrum over the continuous integration region. We then propose an accompanying graph-cut-based swap expansion (GCSE) algorithm to extract beneficial sparsity inherent in HMIMO channels. Numerical results demonstrate that this wavenumber-domainbased GCSE approach achieves robust performance with rapid convergence.

Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) rely heavily upon time-sensitive information update services to ensure the safety of people and assets, and satisfactory entertainment applications. Therefore, the freshness of information is a crucial performance metric for CAV services. However, information from roadside sensors and nearby vehicles can get delayed in transmission due to the high mobility of vehicles. Our research shows that a CAV's relative distance and speed play an essential role in determining the Age-of-Information (AoI). With an increase in AoI, incremental service aggregation issues are observed with out-of-sequence information updates, which hampers the performance of low-latency applications in CAVs. In this paper, we propose a novel AoI-based service aggregation method for CAVs, which can process the information updates according to their update cycles. First, the AoI for sensors and vehicles is modeled, and a predictive AoI system is designed. Then, to reduce the overall service aggregation time and computational load, intervals are used for periodic AoI prediction, and information sources are clustered based on the AoI value. Finally, the system aggregates services for CAV applications using the predicted AoI. We evaluate the system performance based on data sequencing success rate (DSSR) and overall system latency. Lastly, we compare the performance of our proposed system with three other state-of-the-art methods. The evaluation and comparison results show that our proposed predictive AoI-based service aggregation system maintains satisfactory latency and DSSR for CAV applications and outperforms other existing methods.

Edge intelligence in space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs) can enable worldwide network coverage beyond geographical limitations for users to access ubiquitous and low-latency intelligence services. Facing global coverage and complex environments in SAGINs, edge intelligence can provision approximate large language models (LLMs) agents for users via edge servers at ground base stations (BSs) or cloud data centers relayed by satellites. As LLMs with billions of parameters are pre-trained on vast datasets, LLM agents have few-shot learning capabilities, e.g., chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting for complex tasks, which raises a new trade-off between resource consumption and performance in SAGINs. In this paper, we propose a joint caching and inference framework for edge intelligence to provision sustainable and ubiquitous LLM agents in SAGINs. We introduce "cached model-as-a-resource" for offering LLMs with limited context windows and propose a novel optimization framework, i.e., joint model caching and inference, to utilize cached model resources for provisioning LLM agent services along with communication, computing, and storage resources. We design "age of thought" (AoT) considering the CoT prompting of LLMs, and propose a least AoT cached model replacement algorithm for optimizing the provisioning cost. We propose a deep Q-network-based modified second-bid (DQMSB) auction to incentivize network operators, which can enhance allocation efficiency by 23% while guaranteeing strategy-proofness and free from adverse selection.

Sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems, as stated in the European 6G flagship project Hexa-X, are anticipated to feature the integration of intelligence, communication, sensing, positioning, and computation. An important aspect of this integration is integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), in which the same waveform is used for both systems both sensing and communication, to address the challenge of spectrum scarcity. Recently, the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) waveform has been proposed to address OFDM's limitations due to the high Doppler spread in some future wireless communication systems. In this paper, we review existing OTFS waveforms for ISAC systems and provide some insights into future research. Firstly, we introduce the basic principles and a system model of OTFS and provide a foundational understanding of this innovative technology's core concepts and architecture. Subsequently, we present an overview of OTFS-based ISAC system frameworks. We provide a comprehensive review of recent research developments and the current state of the art in the field of OTFS-assisted ISAC systems to gain a thorough understanding of the current landscape and advancements. Furthermore, we perform a thorough comparison between OTFS-enabled ISAC operations and traditional OFDM, highlighting the distinctive advantages of OTFS, especially in high Doppler spread scenarios. Subsequently, we address the primary challenges facing OTFS-based ISAC systems, identifying potential limitations and drawbacks. Then, finally, we suggest future research directions, aiming to inspire further innovation in the 6G wireless communication landscape.

With the growth of magnitude of multi-agent networks, distributed optimization holds considerable significance within complex systems. Convergence, a pivotal goal in this domain, is contingent upon the analysis of infinite products of stochastic matrices (IPSMs). In this work, convergence properties of inhomogeneous IPSMs are investigated. The convergence rate of inhomogeneous IPSMs towards an absolute probability sequence $π$ is derived. We also show that the convergence rate is nearly exponential, which coincides with existing results on ergodic chains. The methodology employed relies on delineating the interrelations among Sarymsakov matrices, scrambling matrices, and positive-column matrices. Based on the theoretical results on inhomogeneous IPSMs, we propose a decentralized projected subgradient method for time-varying multi-agent systems with graph-related stretches in (sub)gradient descent directions. The convergence of the proposed method is established for convex objective functions, and extended to non-convex objectives that satisfy Polyak-Lojasiewicz conditions. To corroborate the theoretical findings, we conduct numerical simulations, aligning the outcomes with the established theoretical framework.

Illegitimate intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) can pose significant physical layer security risks on multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. Recently, a DISCO approach has been proposed an illegitimate IRS with random and time-varying reflection coefficients, referred to as a "disco" IRS (DIRS). Such DIRS can attack MU-MISO systems without relying on either jamming power or channel state information (CSI), and classical anti-jamming techniques are ineffective for the DIRS-based fully-passive jammers (DIRS-based FPJs). In this paper, we propose an IRS-enhanced anti-jamming precoder against DIRS-based FPJs that requires only statistical rather than instantaneous CSI of the DIRS-jammed channels. Specifically, a legitimate IRS is introduced to reduce the strength of the DIRS-based jamming relative to the transmit signals at a legitimate user (LU). In addition, the active beamforming at the legitimate access point (AP) is designed to maximize the signal-to-jamming-plus-noise ratios (SJNRs). Numerical results are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed IRS-enhanced anti-jamming precoder against DIRS-based FPJs.

This paper investigates the application of a unified non-orthogonal multiple access framework in beam hop** (U-NOMA-BH) based satellite communication systems. More specifically, the proposed U-NOMA-BH framework can be applied to code-domain NOMA based BH (CD-NOMA-BH) and power-domain NOMA based BH (PD-NOMA-BH) systems. To satisfy dynamic-uneven traffic demands, we formulate the optimization problem to minimize the square of discrete difference by jointly optimizing power allocation, carrier assignment and beam scheduling. The non-convexity of the objective function and the constraint condition is solved through Dinkelbach's transform and variable relaxation. As a further development, the closed-from and asymptotic expressions of outage probability are derived for CD/PD-NOMA-BH systems. Based on approximated results, the diversity orders of a pair of users are obtained in detail. In addition, the system throughput of U-NOMA-BH is discussed in delay-limited transmission mode. Numerical results verify that: i) The gap between traffic requests of CD/PD-NOMA-BH systems appears to be more closely compared with orthogonal multiple access based BH (OMA-BH); ii) The CD-NOMA-BH system is capable of providing the enhanced traffic request and capacity provision; and iii) The outage behaviors of CD/PD-NOMA-BH are better than that of OMA-BH.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is a promising solution to improve the performance of existing wireless communications. To achieve its cost-effectiveness advantage, there inevitably exist certain hardware impairments in the system. Therefore, it is more reasonable to design passive beamforming in this scenario. Some existing research has considered such problems under transceiver impairments. However, their performance still leaves room for improvement, possibly due to their algorithms not properly handling the fractional structure of the objective function. To address this, the passive beamforming is redesigned in this correspondence paper, taking into account both transceiver impairments and the practical phase-shift model. We tackle the fractional structure of the problem by employing the quadratic transform. The remaining sub-problems are addressed utilizing the penalty-based method and the difference-of-convex programming. Since we provide closed-form solutions for all sub-problems, our algorithm is highly efficient. The simulation results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed algorithm.

With the rapid development of deep learning (DL) in recent years, automatic modulation recognition (AMR) with DL has achieved high accuracy. However, insufficient training signal data in complicated channel environments and large-scale DL models are critical factors that make DL methods difficult to deploy in practice. Aiming to these problems, we propose a novel neural network named convolution-linked signal transformer (ClST) and a novel knowledge distillation method named signal knowledge distillation (SKD). The ClST is accomplished through three primary modifications: a hierarchy of transformer containing convolution, a novel attention mechanism named parallel spatial-channel attention (PSCA) mechanism and a novel convolutional transformer block named convolution-transformer projection (CTP) to leverage a convolutional projection. The SKD is a knowledge distillation method to effectively reduce the parameters and complexity of neural networks. We train two lightweight neural networks using the SKD algorithm, KD-CNN and KD-MobileNet, to meet the demand that neural networks can be used on miniaturized devices. The simulation results demonstrate that the ClST outperforms advanced neural networks on all datasets. Moreover, both KD-CNN and KD-MobileNet obtain higher recognition accuracy with less network complexity, which is very beneficial for the deployment of AMR on miniaturized communication devices.

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite network can complement terrestrial networks for achieving global wireless coverage and improving delay-sensitive Internet services. This paper proposes an integrated satellite-terrestrial network (ISTN) architecture to provide ground users with seamless and reliable content delivery services. For optimal service provisioning in this architecture, we formulate an optimization model to maximize the network throughput by jointly optimizing content delivery policy, cache placement, and transmission power allocation. The resulting optimization model is a large-scale mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) that is intractable for classical computer solvers. Benefitting from the communication and sensing capabilities of an optical system, free space optical (FSO)-ISAC becomes a potential complement to RF-ISAC. In this paper, a direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) scheme is proposed for FSO-ISAC. To derive the spectral efficiency for communication and the Fisher information for sensing as performance metrics, we model the clip** noise of DCO-OFDM as additive colored Gaussian noise to obtain the expression of the signal-to-noise ratio. Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) addresses computational and battery limitations in devices by allowing them to offload computation tasks. To overcome the difficulties in establishing line-of-sight connections, integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has proven beneficial, offering enhanced data exchange, rapid deployment, and mobility. The utilization of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), specifically simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) technology, further extends coverage capabilities and introduces flexibility in MEC. This study explores the integration of UAV and STAR-RIS to facilitate communication between IoT devices and an MEC server. The formulated problem aims to minimize energy consumption for IoT devices and aerial STAR-RIS by jointly optimizing task offloading, aerial STAR-RIS trajectory, amplitude and phase shift coefficients, and transmit power. Given the non-convexity of the problem and the dynamic environment, solving it directly within a polynomial time frame is challenging. Therefore, deep reinforcement learning (DRL), particularly proximal policy optimization (PPO), is introduced for its sample efficiency and stability. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed system compared to benchmark schemes in the literature.

End-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) models have seen revolutionary quality gains with the recent development of large-scale universal speech models (USM). However, deploying these massive USMs is extremely expensive due to the enormous memory usage and computational cost. Therefore, model compression is an important research topic to fit USM-based ASR under budget in real-world scenarios. In this study, we propose a USM fine-tuning approach for ASR, with a low-bit quantization and N:M structured sparsity aware paradigm on the model weights, reducing the model complexity from parameter precision and matrix topology perspectives. We conducted extensive experiments with a 2-billion parameter USM on a large-scale voice search dataset to evaluate our proposed method. A series of ablation studies validate the effectiveness of up to int4 quantization and 2:4 sparsity. However, a single compression technique fails to recover the performance well under extreme setups including int2 quantization and 1:4 sparsity. By contrast, our proposed method can compress the model to have 9.4% of the size, at the cost of only 7.3% relative word error rate (WER) regressions. We also provided in-depth analyses on the results and discussions on the limitations and potential solutions, which would be valuable for future studies.

Specifically, we elucidate that the channel estimation, subject to holographic MIMO's electromagnetically large antenna arrays, has to discriminate not only the angles of a user/scatterer but also its distance information, namely the three-dimensional (3D) azimuth and elevation angles plus the distance (AED) parameters. As the angular-domain representation fails to characterize the sparsity inherent in holographic MIMO channels, the tightly coupled 3D AED parameters are firstly decomposed for independently constructing their own covariance matrices. Then, the recovery of each individual parameter can be structured as a compressive sensing (CS) problem by harnessing the covariance matrix constructed. This pair of techniques contribute to a parametric decomposition and compressed deconstruction (DeRe) framework, along with a formulation of the maximum likelihood estimation for each parameter. Then, an efficient algorithm, namely DeRe-based variational Bayesian inference and message passing (DeRe-VM), is proposed for the sharp detection of the 3D AED parameters and the robust recovery of sparse channels. Finally, the proposed channel estimation regime is confirmed to be of great robustness in accommodating different channel conditions, regardless of the near-field and far-field contexts of a holographic MIMO system, as well as an improved performance in comparison to the state-of-the-art benchmarks.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely recognized as the representative waveform for 5G wireless networks, which can directly support sensing/positioning with existing infrastructure. To guarantee superior sensing/positioning accuracy while supporting high-speed communications simultaneously, the dual functions tend to be assigned with different resource elements (REs) due to their diverse design requirements. This motivates optimization of resource allocation/waveform design across time, frequency, power and delay-Doppler domains. Therefore, this article proposes two cross-domain waveform optimization strategies for effective convergence of OFDM-based communications and sensing/positioning, following communication- and sensing-centric criteria, respectively. For the communication-centric design, to maximize the achievable data rate, a fraction of REs are optimally allocated for communications according to prior knowledge of the communication channel. The remaining REs are then employed for sensing/positioning, where the sidelobe level and peak-to-average power ratio are suppressed by optimizing its power-frequency and phase-frequency characteristics for sensing performance improvement. For the sensing-centric design, a `locally' perfect auto-correlation property is ensured for accurate sensing and positioning by adjusting the unit cells of the ambiguity function within its region of interest (RoI). Afterwards, the irrelevant cells beyond RoI, which can readily determine the sensing power allocation, are optimized with the communication power allocation to enhance the achievable data rate. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed waveform designs.

The introduction of inter-satellite links (ISLs) can significantly improve the throughput of the satellite network, and recently gets lots of attention from both academia and industry. In this paper, we illustrate the advantages of using the laser for ISLs due to its longer communication distance, higher data speed, and stronger security. Specifically, space-borne laser terminals with the acquisition, pointing and tracking mechanism which realize long-distance communication are illustrated, advanced modulation and multiplexing modes that make high communication rates possible are introduced, and the security of ISLs ensured by the characteristics of both laser and the optical channel is also analyzed. Moreover, some open issues such as advanced optical beam steering, routing and scheduling algorithm, and integrated sensing and communication are discussed to direct future research.

This letter proposes a novel anti-interference technique, semantic interference cancellation (SemantIC), for enhancing information quality towards the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. SemantIC only requires the receiver to concatenate the channel decoder with a semantic auto-encoder. This constructs a turbo loop which iteratively and alternately eliminates noise in the signal domain and the semantic domain. From the viewpoint of network information theory, the neural network of the semantic auto-encoder stores side information by training, and provides side information in iterative decoding, as an implementation of the Wyner-Ziv theorem. Simulation results verify the performance improvement by SemantIC without extra channel resource cost.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) emerges as an efficient and promising technology for the next wireless generation networks and has attracted a lot of attention owing to the capability of extending wireless coverage by reflecting signals toward targeted receivers. In this paper, we consider a RIS-assisted high-speed train (HST) communication system to enhance wireless coverage and improve coverage probability. First, coverage performance of the downlink single-input-single-output system is investigated, and the closed-form expression of coverage probability is derived. Moreover, travel distance maximization problem is formulated to facilitate RIS discrete phase design and RIS placement optimization, which is subject to coverage probability constraint. Simulation results validate that better coverage performance and higher travel distance can be achieved with deployment of RIS. The impacts of some key system parameters including transmission power, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, number of RIS elements, number of RIS quantization bits, horizontal distance between base station and RIS, and speed of HST on system performance are investigated. In addition, it is found that RIS can well improve coverage probability with limited power consumption for HST communications.

This letter proposes a novel relaying framework, semantic-forward (SF), for cooperative communications towards the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. The SF relay extracts and transmits the semantic features, which reduces forwarding payload, and also improves the network robustness against intra-link errors. Based on the theoretical basis for cooperative communications with side information and the turbo principle, we design a joint source-channel coding algorithm to iteratively exchange the extrinsic information for enhancing the decoding gains at the destination. Surprisingly, simulation results indicate that even in bad channel conditions, SF relaying can still effectively improve the recovered information quality.

Under the organization of the base station (BS), wireless federated learning (FL) enables collaborative model training among multiple devices. However, the BS is merely responsible for aggregating local updates during the training process, which incurs a waste of the computational resource at the BS. To tackle this issue, we propose a semi-federated learning (SemiFL) paradigm to leverage the computing capabilities of both the BS and devices for a hybrid implementation of centralized learning (CL) and FL. Specifically, each device sends both local gradients and data samples to the BS for training a shared global model. To improve communication efficiency over the same time-frequency resources, we integrate over-the-air computation for aggregation and non-orthogonal multiple access for transmission by designing a novel transceiver structure. To gain deep insights, we conduct convergence analysis by deriving a closed-form optimality gap for SemiFL and extend the result to two extra cases. In the first case, the BS uses all accumulated data samples to calculate the CL gradient, while a decreasing learning rate is adopted in the second case. Our analytical results capture the destructive effect of wireless communication and show that both FL and CL are special cases of SemiFL. Then, we formulate a non-convex problem to reduce the optimality gap by jointly optimizing the transmit power and receive beamformers. Accordingly, we propose a two-stage algorithm to solve this intractable problem, in which we provide the closed-form solutions to the beamformers. Extensive simulation results on two real-world datasets corroborate our theoretical analysis, and show that the proposed SemiFL outperforms conventional FL and achieves 3.2% accuracy gain on the MNIST dataset compared to state-of-the-art benchmarks.

Emerging intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) significantly improve system performance, but also pose a significant risk for physical layer security (PLS). Unlike the extensive research on legitimate IRS-enhanced communications, in this article we present an adversarial IRS-based fully-passive jammer (FPJ). We describe typical application scenarios for Disco IRS (DIRS)-based FPJ, where an illegitimate IRS with random, time-varying reflection properties acts like a "disco ball" to randomly change the propagation environment. We introduce the principles of DIRS-based FPJ and overview existing investigations of the technology, including a design example employing one-bit phase shifters. The DIRS-based FPJ can be implemented without either jamming power or channel state information (CSI) for the legitimate users (LUs). It does not suffer from the energy constraints of traditional active jammers, nor does it require any knowledge of the LU channels. In addition to the proposed jamming attack, we also propose an anti-jamming strategy that requires only statistical rather than instantaneous CSI. Furthermore, we present a data frame structure that enables the legitimate access point (AP) to estimate the DIRS-jammed channels' statistical characteristics in the presence of the DIRS jamming. Typical cases are discussed to show the impact of the DIRS-based FPJ and the feasibility of the anti-jamming precoder (AJP). Moreover, we outline future research directions and challenges for the DIRS-based FPJ and its anti-jamming precoding to stimulate this line of research and pave the way for practical applications.

While reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology has been shown to provide numerous benefits to wireless systems, in the hands of an adversary such technology can also be used to disrupt communication links. This paper describes and analyzes an RIS-based attack on multi-antenna wireless systems that operate in time-division duplex mode under the assumption of channel reciprocity. In particular, we show how an RIS with a non-diagonal (ND) phase shift matrix (referred to here as an ND-RIS) can be deployed to maliciously break the channel reciprocity and hence degrade the downlink network performance. Such an attack is entirely passive and difficult to detect and counteract. We provide a theoretical analysis of the degradation in the sum ergodic rate that results when an arbitrary malicious ND-RIS is deployed and design an approach based on the genetic algorithm for optimizing the ND structure under partial knowledge of the available channel state information. Our simulation results validate the analysis and demonstrate that an ND-RIS channel reciprocity attack can dramatically reduce the downlink throughput.

The envisioned wireless networks of the future entail the provisioning of massive numbers of connections, heterogeneous data traffic, ultra-high spectral efficiency, and low latency services. This vision is spurring research activities focused on defining a next generation multiple access (NGMA) protocol that can accommodate massive numbers of users in different resource blocks, thereby, achieving higher spectral efficiency and increased connectivity compared to conventional multiple access schemes. In this article, we present a multiple access scheme for NGMA in wireless communication systems assisted by multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this regard, considering the practical scenario of static users operating together with mobile ones, we first study the interplay of the design of NGMA schemes and RIS phase configuration in terms of efficiency and complexity. Based on this, we then propose a multiple access framework for RIS-assisted communication systems, and we also design a medium access control (MAC) protocol incorporating RISs. In addition, we give a detailed performance analysis of the designed RIS-assisted MAC protocol. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MAC design outperforms the benchmarks in terms of system throughput and access fairness, and also reveal a trade-off relationship between the system throughput and fairness.

Data collection and processing timely is crucial for mobile crowd integrated sensing, communication, and computation~(ISCC) systems with various applications such as smart home and connected cars, which requires numerous integrated sensing and communication~(ISAC) devices to sense the targets and offload the data to the base station~(BS) for further processing. However, as the number of ISAC devices growing, there exists intensive interactions among ISAC devices in the processes of data collection and processing since they share the common network resources. In this paper, we consider the environment sensing problem in the large-scale mobile crowd ISCC systems and propose an efficient waveform precoding design algorithm based on the mean field game~(MFG). Specifically, to handle the complex interactions among large-scale ISAC devices, we first utilize the MFG method to transform the influence from other ISAC devices into the mean field term and derive the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation, which models the evolution of the system state. Then, we derive the cost function based on the mean field term and reformulate the waveform precoding design problem. Next, we utilize the G-prox primal-dual hybrid gradient algorithm to solve the reformulated problem and analyze the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can solve the interactions among large-scale ISAC devices effectively in the ISCC process. In addition, compared with other baselines, the proposed waveform precoding design algorithm has advantages in improving communication performance and reducing cost function.

Emerging intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) significantly improve system performance, but also pose a huge risk for physical layer security. Existing works have illustrated that a disco IRS (DIRS), i.e., an illegitimate IRS with random time-varying reflection properties (like a "disco ball"), can be employed by an attacker to actively age the channels of legitimate users (LUs). Such active channel aging (ACA) generated by the DIRS can be employed to jam multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems without relying on either jamming power or LU channel state information (CSI). To address the significant threats posed by DIRS-based fully-passive jammers (FPJs), an anti-jamming precoder is proposed that requires only the statistical characteristics of the DIRS-based ACA channels instead of their CSI. The statistical characteristics of DIRS-jammed channels are first derived, and then the anti-jamming precoder is derived based on the statistical characteristics. Furthermore, we prove that the anti-jamming precoder can achieve the maximum signal-to-jamming-plus-noise ratio (SJNR). To acquire the ACA statistics without changing the system architecture or cooperating with the illegitimate DIRS, we design a data frame structure that the legitimate access point (AP) can use to estimate the statistical characteristics. During the designed data frame, the LUs only need to feed back their received power to the legitimate AP when they detect jamming attacks. Numerical results are also presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed anti-jamming precoder against the DIRS-based FPJs and the feasibility of the designed data frame used by the legitimate AP to estimate the statistical characteristics.

To obtain high-quality positron emission tomography (PET) scans while reducing radiation exposure to the human body, various approaches have been proposed to reconstruct standard-dose PET (SPET) images from low-dose PET (LPET) images. One widely adopted technique is the generative adversarial networks (GANs), yet recently, diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) have emerged as a compelling alternative due to their improved sample quality and higher log-likelihood scores compared to GANs. Despite this, DPMs suffer from two major drawbacks in real clinical settings, i.e., the computationally expensive sampling process and the insufficient preservation of correspondence between the conditioning LPET image and the reconstructed PET (RPET) image. To address the above limitations, this paper presents a coarse-to-fine PET reconstruction framework that consists of a coarse prediction module (CPM) and an iterative refinement module (IRM). The CPM generates a coarse PET image via a deterministic process, and the IRM samples the residual iteratively. By delegating most of the computational overhead to the CPM, the overall sampling speed of our method can be significantly improved. Furthermore, two additional strategies, i.e., an auxiliary guidance strategy and a contrastive diffusion strategy, are proposed and integrated into the reconstruction process, which can enhance the correspondence between the LPET image and the RPET image, further improving clinical reliability. Extensive experiments on two human brain PET datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art PET reconstruction methods.
