Conventional manual lithological map** (MLM) through field surveys are resource-extensive and time-consuming. Digital lithological map** (DLM), harnessing remotely sensed spectral imaging techniques, provides an effective strategy to streamline target locations for MLM or an efficient alternative to MLM. DLM relies on laboratory-generated generic end-member signatures of minerals for spectral analysis. Thus, the accuracy of DLM may be limited due to the presence of site-specific impurities. A strategy, based on a hybrid machine-learning and signal-processing algorithm, is proposed in this paper to tackle this problem of site-specific impurities. In addition, a soil pixel alignment strategy is proposed here to visualize the relative purity of the target minerals. The proposed methodologies are validated via case studies for map** of Limestone deposits in Jaffna, Ilmenite deposits in Pulmoddai and Mannar, and Montmorillonite deposits in Murunkan, Sri Lanka. The results of satellite-based spectral imaging analysis were corroborated with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Magnetic Separation (MS) analysis of soil samples collected from those sites via field surveys. There exists a good correspondence between the relative availability of the minerals with the XRD and MS results. In particular, correlation coefficients of 0.8115 and 0.9853 were found for the sites in Pulmoddai and Jaffna respectively.

In recent years, transformer-based deep learning networks have gained popularity in Hyperspectral (HS) unmixing applications due to their superior performance. The attention mechanism within transformers facilitates input-dependent weighting and enhances contextual awareness during training. Drawing inspiration from this, we propose a novel attention based Hyperspectral Unmixing algorithm called Transformer based Endmember Fusion with Spatial Context for Hyperspectral Unmixing (FusionNet). This algorithm can effectively fuse endmember signatures obtained from different endmember extraction algorithms, as opposed to the classical HS unmixing approaches that rely on a single Endmember Extraction Algorithm (EEA). The FusionNet incorporates an Approximation Network (AN), introducing contextual awareness into abundance prediction by considering neighborhood pixels. Unlike Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which are constrained by specific kernel shapes, the Fusion network offers flexibility in choosing any arbitrary configuration of the neighborhood. We conducted a comparative analysis between the FusionNet algorithm and state-of-the-art algorithms using two popular datasets. Remarkably, FusionNet outperformed other algorithms, achieving the lowest Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for abundance predictions and competitive Spectral Angle Distance (SAD) for signatures associated with each endmember for both datasets.

Multispectral imaging coupled with Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Signal Processing techniques work as a feasible alternative for laboratory testing, especially in food quality control. Most of the recent related research has been focused on reflectance multispectral imaging but a system with both reflectance, transmittance capabilities would be ideal for a wide array of specimen types including solid and liquid samples. In this paper, a device which includes a dedicated reflectance mode and a dedicated transmittance mode is proposed. Dual mode operation where fast switching between two modes is facilitated. An innovative merged mode is introduced in which both reflectance and transmittance information of a specimen are combined to form a higher dimensional dataset with more features. Spatial and temporal variations of measurements are analyzed to ensure the quality of measurements. The concept is validated using a standard color palette and specific case studies are done for standard food samples such as turmeric powder and coconut oil proving the validity of proposed contributions. The classification accuracy of standard color palette testing was over 90% and the accuracy of coconut oil adulteration was over 95%. while the merged mode was able to provide the best accuracy of 99% for the turmeric adulteration. A linear functional map** was done for coconut oil adulteration with an R2 value of 0.9558.

Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging technology and considered as an alternative to overcome some of the disadvantages of radio frequency communication technology in an indoor environment. However, the line of sight nature of the technology limits the user mobility and create new challenges to provides seamless network coverage under user mobility scenarios. In VLC multi access points and multi cell based network, co channel interference (CCI) between neighbor cells limits the overall performance. Therefore, by following the already existing VLC handover systems, this statistical parameter based novel handover method is designed. This paper proposes a handover mechanism for indoor VLC systems by introducing cell ID bits and statistical kurtosis values of the cell ID waveforms as metric for the handover initiation. As advantage of the method, effects from the CCI can be eliminate when measuring signal strengths in the signal overlap** cell boundary area. Also the handover criteria are adoptive to the different ambient lighting conditions compared to existing pre-configured light intensity threshold based handover systems. With the use of bit error rate (BER), the experiment results showed that Kurtosis value of the cell ID waveforms can be used as metric to initiate network handover in indoor VLC systems.

Human motion analysis is used in many different fields and applications. Currently, existing systems either focus on one single limb or one single class of movements. Many proposed systems are designed to be used in an indoor controlled environment and must possess good technical know-how to operate. To improve mobility, a less restrictive, modularized, and simple Inertial Measurement units based system is proposed that can be worn separately and combined. This allows the user to measure singular limb movements separately and also monitor whole body movements over a prolonged period at any given time while not restricted to a controlled environment. For proper analysis, data is conditioned and pre-processed through possible five stages namely power-based, clustering index-based, Kalman filtering, distance-measure-based, and PCA-based dimension reduction. Different combinations of the above stages are analyzed using machine learning algorithms for selected case studies namely hand gesture recognition and environment and shoe parameter-based walking pattern analysis to validate the performance capability of the proposed wearable device and multi-stage algorithms. The results of the case studies show that distance-measure-based and PCA-based dimension reduction will significantly improve human motion identification accuracy. This is further improved with the introduction of the Kalman filter. An LSTM neural network is proposed as an alternate classifier and the results indicate that it is a robust classifier for human motion recognition. As the results indicate, the proposed wearable device architecture and multi-stage algorithms are cable of distinguishing between subtle human limb movements making it a viable tool for human motion analysis.

In recent hyperspectral unmixing (HU) literature, the application of deep learning (DL) has become more prominent, especially with the autoencoder (AE) architecture. We propose a split architecture and use a pseudo-ground truth for abundances to guide the `unmixing network' (UN) optimization. Preceding the UN, an `approximation network' (AN) is proposed, which will improve the association between the centre pixel and its neighbourhood. Hence, it will accentuate spatial correlation in the abundances as its output is the input to the UN and the reference for the `mixing network' (MN). In the Guided Encoder-Decoder Architecture for Hyperspectral Unmixing with Spatial Smoothness (GAUSS), we proposed using one-hot encoded abundances as the pseudo-ground truth to guide the UN; computed using the k-means algorithm to exclude the use of prior HU methods. Furthermore, we release the single-layer constraint on MN by introducing the UN generated abundances in contrast to the standard AE for HU. Secondly, we experimented with two modifications on the pre-trained network using the GAUSS method. In GAUSS$_\textit{blind}$, we have concatenated the UN and the MN to back-propagate the reconstruction error gradients to the encoder. Then, in the GAUSS$_\textit{prime}$, abundance results of a signal processing (SP) method with reliable abundance results were used as the pseudo-ground truth with the GAUSS architecture. According to quantitative and graphical results for four experimental datasets, the three architectures either transcended or equated the performance of existing HU algorithms from both DL and SP domains.

Assessing the health of both the fetus and mother is vital in preventing and identifying possible complications in pregnancy. This paper focuses on a device that can be used effectively by the mother herself with minimal supervision and provide a reasonable estimation of fetal and maternal health while being safe, comfortable, and easy to use. The device proposed uses a belt with a single accelerometer over the mother's uterus to record the required information. The device is expected to monitor both the mother and the fetus constantly over a long period and provide medical professionals with useful information, which they would otherwise overlook due to the low frequency that health monitoring is carried out at the present. The paper shows that simultaneous measurement of respiratory information of the mother and fetal movement is in fact possible even in the presence of mild interferences, which needs to be accounted for if the device is expected to be worn for extended times.

As field surveys used for manual lithological map** are costly and time-consuming, digital lithological map** (DLM) that utilizes remotely sensed spectral imaging provides a viable and economical alternative. Generally, DLM has been performed using spectral imaging with the use of laboratory-generated generic endmember signatures. To that end, this paper proposes generating a single-target abundance mineral map for DLM, where the generated map can further be used as a guide for the selection or avoidance of a field survey. For that, a stochastic cancellation-based methodology was used to generate a site-specific endemic signature for the mineral in concern to reduce the inclusive nature otherwise present in DLM. Furthermore, a soil pixel alignment strategy to visualize the relative purity level of the target mineral has been introduced in the proposed work. Then, for the method validation, map** of limestone deposits in the Jaffna peninsula of Sri Lanka was conducted as the case study using satellite-based spectral imaging as the input. It was observed that despite the low signal-to-noise ratio of the input hyperspectral data the proposed methodology was able to robustly extract the rich information contained in the input data. Further, a field survey was conducted to collect soil samples of four sites chosen by the proposed DLM from the Jaffna peninsula as an algorithm validation and to demonstrate the application of the proposed solution. The proposed abundance threshold of 0.1 coincided with the industrial standard X-ray diffraction (XRD) threshold of 5% for the mineral presence. The results of the XRD test validated the use of the algorithm in the selection of sites to be surveyed, hence could avoid conducting a costly field survey on the assumption of the existence of a mineral.

Oil reheating has a significant impact on global health due to its extensive consumption, especially in South Asia, and severe health risks. Nevertheless, food image analysis using multispectral imaging systems(MISs) has not been applied to oil reheating analysis despite their vast application in rapid food quality screening. To that end, the paper discusses the application of a low-cost MSI to estimate the 'reheat cycle count classes' (number of times an oil sample is recursively heated) and identify 'critical classes' at which substantial changes in the oil sample have materialized. Firstly, the reheat cycle count class is estimated with Bhattacharyya distance between the reheated and a pure oil sample as the input. The classification was performed using a support vector machine classifier that resulted in an accuracy of 83.34 % for reheat cycle count identification. Subsequently, an unsupervised clustering procedure was introduced using a modified spectral clustering (SC) algorithm to distinguish critical classes under reheating. In addition, laboratory experiments were performed to ascertain the ramifications of the reheating process with a chemical analysis. The chemical analysis of the coconut oil samples used in the experiment coincided with the chemical analysis results and was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Accordingly, the proposed work closes the gap for using multispectral imaging for oil reheating and proposes a novel algorithm for unsupervised detection of critical property changes in the oil. Hence, the proposed research work is significant in its practical implications, contribution to food image analysis, and unsupervised classification mechanisms.

The occurrence of voltage violations are a major deterrent for absorbing more roof-top solar power to smart Low Voltage Distribution Grids (LVDG). Recent studies have focused on decentralized control methods to solve this problem due to the high computational time in performing load flows in centralized control techniques. To address this issue a novel sensitivity matrix is developed to estimate voltages of the network by replacing load flow simulations. In this paper, a Centralized Active, Reactive Power Management System (CARPMS) is proposed to optimally utilize the reactive power capability of smart photo-voltaic inverters with minimal active power curtailment to mitigate the voltage violation problem. The developed sensitivity matrix is able to reduce the time consumed by 48% compared to load flow simulations, enabling near real-time control optimization. Given the large solution space of power systems, a novel two-stage optimization is proposed, where the solution space is narrowed down by a Feasible Region Search (FRS) step, followed by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The performance of the proposed methodology is analyzed in comparison to the load flow method to demonstrate the accuracy and the capability of the optimization algorithm to mitigate voltage violations in near real-time. The deviation of mean voltages of the proposed methodology from load flow method was; 6.5*10^-3 p.u for reactive power control using Q-injection, 1.02*10^-2 p.u for reactive power control using Q-absorption, and 0 p.u for active power curtailment case.

COVID-19 continues to cause a significant impact on public health. To minimize this impact, policy makers undertake containment measures that however, when carried out disproportionately to the actual threat, as a result if errorneous threat assessment, cause undesirable long-term socio-economic complications. In addition, macro-level or national level decision making fails to consider the localized sensitivities in small regions. Hence, the need arises for region-wise threat assessments that provide insights on the behaviour of COVID-19 through time, enabled through accurate forecasts. In this study, a forecasting solution is proposed, to predict daily new cases of COVID-19 in regions small enough where containment measures could be locally implemented, by targeting three main shortcomings that exist in literature; the unreliability of existing data caused by inconsistent testing patterns in smaller regions, weak deploy-ability of forecasting models towards predicting cases in previously unseen regions, and model training biases caused by the imbalanced nature of data in COVID-19 epi-curves. Hence, the contributions of this study are three-fold; an optimized smoothing technique to smoothen less deterministic epi-curves based on epidemiological dynamics of that region, a Long-Short-Term-Memory (LSTM) based forecasting model trained using data from select regions to create a representative and diverse training set that maximizes deploy-ability in regions with lack of historical data, and an adaptive loss function whilst training to mitigate the data imbalances seen in epi-curves. The proposed smoothing technique, the generalized training strategy and the adaptive loss function largely increased the overall accuracy of the forecast, which enables efficient containment measures at a more localized micro-level.

It is an essential practice to avoid adverse scenarios such as stillbirths and intrauterine growth restrictions. However, this endeavor of ensuring fetus safety has been arduous due to the existence of random noise in medical images. This novel research is an in depth approach to analyze how the interference of different noise variations affect the retrieval of information in those images. For that, an algorithm employing auto-encoder-based deep learning was modeled and the accuracy of reconstruction of the STFT images mitigating the noise has been measured examining the loss. From the results, it is manifested that even a substantial addition of the Super-Gaussian noises which have a higher correlation of the frequencies possessed by the Fetal movement images can be restored successfully with the slightest error.

Fetal movement count monitoring is one of the most commonly used methods of assessing fetal well-being. While few methods are available to monitor fetal movements, they consist of several adverse qualities such as unreliability as well as the inability to be conducted in a non-clinical setting. Therefore, this research was conducted to design a complete system that will enable pregnant mothers to monitor fetal movement at home. This system consists of a non-invasive, non-transmitting sensor unit that can be fabricated at a low cost. An accelerometer was utilized as the primary sensor and a micro-controller based circuit was implemented. Clinical testing was conducted utilizing this sensor unit. Two phases of clinical testing procedures were done and readings from more than 120 pregnant mothers were taking. Validation was done by conducting an abdominal ultrasound scan which was utilized as the ground truth during the second phase of the clinical testing procedure. A clinical survey was also conducted in parallel with clinical testings in order to improve the sensor unit as well as to improve the final system. Four different signal processing algorithms were implemented on the data set and the performance of each was compared with each other. Consequently, the most feasible as well as the best performing algorithm was determined and it was utilized in the final system. Furthermore, a mobile application was also developed to be used with the sensor unit by pregnant mothers. Finally, a complete end to end method to monitor fetal movement in a non-clinical setting was presented by the proposed system.

The integration of renewable resources has increased in power generation as a means to reduce the fossil fuel usage and mitigate its adverse effects on the environment. However, renewables like solar energy are stochastic in nature due to its high dependency on weather patterns. This uncertainty vastly diminishes the benefit of solar panel integration and increases the operating costs due to larger energy reserve requirement. To address this issue, a Modified Auto Regressive model, a Convolutional Neural Network and a Long Short Term Memory neural network that can accurately predict the solar irradiance are proposed. The proposed techniques are compared against each other by means of multiple error metrics of validation. The Modified Auto Regressive model has a mean absolute percentage error of 14.2%, 19.9% and 22.4% for 10 minute, 30 minute and 1 hour prediction horizons. Existing methods available for evaluating quality of oil are laborious and time consuming. Therefore, we propose an imaging system hardware and image processing-based algorithm to estimate the adulteration of coconut oil with palm oil as the adulterant. A clear functional relationship between adulteration level and Bhattacharyya distance was observed as R2 = 0.9876 on the training samples. In the remote sensing context spectral unmixing is a technique to decompose a mixed pixel into two fundamental representatives: endmembers and abundances. In this paper, a novel architecture is proposed to perform blind unmixing on hyperspectral images. The proposed architecture consists of convolutional layers followed by an autoencoder. The encoder transforms the feature space produced through convolutional layers to a latent space representation. Then, from these latent characteristics the decoder reconstructs the roll-out image of the monochrome image which is at the input of the architecture; and each single-band image is fed sequentially. Experimental results on real hyperspectral data concludes that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing unmixing methods at abundance estimation and generates competitive results for endmember extraction with RMSE and SAD as the metrics, respectively.

As combating climate change has become a top priority and as many countries are taking steps to make their power generation sustainable, there is a marked increase in the use of renewable energy sources (RESs) for electricity generation. Among these RESs, solar photovoltaics (PV) is one of the most popular sources of energy connected to LV distribution networks. With the greater integration of solar PV into LV distribution networks, utility providers impose caps to solar penetration in order to operate their network safely and within acceptable norms. One parameter that restricts solar PV penetration is unbalances created by loads and single-phase rooftop schemes connected to LV distribution grids. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to mitigate voltage unbalance in LV distribution grids by optimally re-phasing grid-connected rooftop PV systems. A modified version of the discrete bacterial foraging optimization algorithm (DBFOA) is introduced as the optimization technique to minimize the overall voltage unbalance of the network as the objective function, subjected to various network and operating parameters. The impact of utilizing the proposed PV re-phasing technique as opposed to a fixed phase configuration are compared based on overall voltage unbalance, which was observed hourly throughout the day. The case studies show that the proposed approach can significantly mitigate the overall voltage unbalance during the daytime and can facilitate to increase the usable PV capacity of the considered network by 77%.

Low light image enhancement is an important challenge for the development of robust computer vision algorithms. The machine learning approaches to this have been either unsupervised, supervised based on paired dataset or supervised based on unpaired dataset. This paper presents a novel deep learning pipeline that can learn from both paired and unpaired datasets. Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) that are optimized to minimize standard loss, and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) that are optimized to minimize the adversarial loss are used to achieve different steps of the low light image enhancement process. Cycle consistency loss and a patched discriminator are utilized to further improve the performance. The paper also analyses the functionality and the performance of different components, hidden layers, and the entire pipeline.

Hyperspectral unmixing (HU) has become an important technique in exploiting hyperspectral data since it decomposes a mixed pixel into a collection of endmembers weighted by fractional abundances. Hyperspectral unmixing (HU) has become an important technique in exploiting hyperspectral data since it decomposes a mixed pixel into a collection of endmembers weighted by fractional abundances. The endmembers of a hyperspectral image (HSI) are more likely to be generated by independent sources and be mixed in a macroscopic degree before arriving at the sensor element of the imaging spectrometer as mixed spectra. Over the past few decades, many attempts have focused on imposing auxiliary constraints on the conventional nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) framework in order to effectively unmix these mixed spectra. As a promising step toward finding an optimum constraint to extract endmembers, this paper presents a novel blind HU algorithm, referred to as Kurtosis-based Smooth Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (KbSNMF) which incorporates a novel constraint based on the statistical independence of the probability density functions of endmember spectra. Imposing this constraint on the conventional NMF framework promotes the extraction of independent endmembers while further enhancing the parts-based representation of data. Experiments conducted on diverse synthetic HSI datasets (with numerous numbers of endmembers, spectral bands, pixels, and noise levels) and three standard real HSI datasets demonstrate the validity of the proposed KbSNMF algorithm compared to several state-of-the-art NMF-based HU baselines. The proposed algorithm exhibits superior performance especially in terms of extracting endmember spectra from hyperspectral data; therefore, it could uplift the performance of recent deep learning HU methods which utilize the endmember spectra as supervisory input data for abundance extraction.
