Skin cancer is a highly dangerous type of cancer that requires an accurate diagnosis from experienced physicians. To help physicians diagnose skin cancer more efficiently, a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system can be very helpful. In this paper, we propose a novel model, which uses a novel attention mechanism to pinpoint the differences in features across the spatial dimensions and symmetry of the lesion, thereby focusing on the dissimilarities of various classes based on symmetry, uniformity in texture and color, etc. Additionally, to take into account the variations in the boundaries of the lesions for different classes, we employ a gradient-based fusion of wavelet and soft attention-aided features to extract boundary information of skin lesions. We have tested our model on the multi-class and highly class-imbalanced dataset, called HAM10000, and achieved promising results, with a 91.17\% F1-score and 90.75\% accuracy. The code is made available at: https://github.com/AyushRoy2001/WAGF-Fusion.

Breast cancer is a major global health concern. Pathologists face challenges in analyzing complex features from pathological images, which is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task. Therefore, efficient computer-based diagnostic tools are needed for early detection and treatment planning. This paper presents a modified version of MultiResU-Net for histopathology image segmentation, which is selected as the backbone for its ability to analyze and segment complex features at multiple scales and ensure effective feature flow via skip connections. The modified version also utilizes the Gaussian distribution-based Attention Module (GdAM) to incorporate histopathology-relevant text information in a Gaussian distribution. The sampled features from the Gaussian text feature-guided distribution highlight specific spatial regions based on prior knowledge. Finally, using the Controlled Dense Residual Block (CDRB) on skip connections of MultiResU-Net, the information is transferred from the encoder layers to the decoder layers in a controlled manner using a scaling parameter derived from the extracted spatial features. We validate our approach on two diverse breast cancer histopathology image datasets: TNBC and MonuSeg, demonstrating superior segmentation performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. The code for our proposed model is available on https://github.com/AyushRoy2001/GRU-Net.

Reliable autonomous navigation requires adapting the control policy of a mobile robot in response to dynamics changes in different operational conditions. Hand-designed dynamics models may struggle to capture model variations due to a limited set of parameters. Data-driven dynamics learning approaches offer higher model capacity and better generalization but require large amounts of state-labeled data. This paper develops an approach for learning robot dynamics directly from point-cloud observations, removing the need and associated errors of state estimation, while embedding Hamiltonian structure in the dynamics model to improve data efficiency. We design an observation-space loss that relates motion prediction from the dynamics model with motion prediction from point-cloud registration to train a Hamiltonian neural ordinary differential equation. The learned Hamiltonian model enables the design of an energy-sha** model-based tracking controller for rigid-body robots. We demonstrate dynamics learning and tracking control on a real nonholonomic wheeled robot.

The probability density and cumulative distribution functions are explicitly derived. Some properties of the distribution, specifically, its moments and moment generating functions, are also derived and shown to exist. These functions and expressions are exploited to also characterize the special case distributions where the bivariate Gaussian mean vector and covariance matrix have some simple structure.

Deep learning models (DLMs) can achieve state of the art performance in medical image segmentation and classification tasks. However, DLMs that do not provide feedback for their predictions such as Dice coefficients (Dice) have limited deployment potential in real world clinical settings. Uncertainty estimates can increase the trust of these automated systems by identifying predictions that need further review but remain computationally prohibitive to deploy. In this study, we use a DLM with randomly initialized weights and Monte Carlo dropout (MCD) to segment tumors from microscopic Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) dye stained prostate core biopsy RGB images. We devise a novel approach that uses multiple clinical region based uncertainties from a single image (instead of the entire image) to predict Dice of the DLM model output by linear models. Image level uncertainty maps were generated and showed correspondence between imperfect model segmentation and high levels of uncertainty associated with specific prostate tissue regions with or without tumors. Results from this study suggest that linear models can learn coefficients of uncertainty quantified deep learning and correlations ((Spearman's correlation (p<0.05)) to predict Dice scores of specific regions of medical images.

We propose a novel deep neural network architecture to integrate imaging and genetics data, as guided by diagnosis, that provides interpretable biomarkers. Our model consists of an encoder, a decoder and a classifier. The encoder learns a non-linear subspace shared between the input data modalities. The classifier and the decoder act as regularizers to ensure that the low-dimensional encoding captures predictive differences between patients and controls. We use a learnable dropout layer to extract interpretable biomarkers from the data, and our unique training strategy can easily accommodate missing data modalities across subjects. We have evaluated our model on a population study of schizophrenia that includes two functional MRI (fMRI) paradigms and Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) data. Using 10-fold cross validation, we demonstrate that our model achieves better classification accuracy than baseline methods, and that this performance generalizes to a second dataset collected at a different site. In an exploratory analysis we further show that the biomarkers identified by our model are closely associated with the well-documented deficits in schizophrenia.

This work introduces a theoretical extension of the characteristic mode formulation for analysing the vertical electric dipole lying above a lossy dielectric half-space. As the conventional characteristic formulation fails to maintain the orthogonality of the characteristic field modes over the infinite sphere, an alternate modal formulation is proposed here to maintain the orthogonality for both the current and field modes. The modal results are found to match closely with its method of moment counterparts. Later, the modes of an isolated dipole with no ground plane have been used to predict the role of the lossy ground plane through a theory of the linear combination of the eigenvectors. The proposed formulations have been studied with different heights from the ground plane and are compared with the direct modal solutions to validate its accuracy. It helps to provide a thorough understanding of how the isolated modes interact among each other to constitute the perturbed modes in the presence of the lossy half-space. It can find application to include the lossy earth effect in the study of the lightning fields and the path loss modelling of the antennas over the lossy ground.

Microstip antenna topology is commonly loaded with a narrow slot to manipulate the resonance frequency or impedance bandwidth. However, the tuning of the resonance frequency or impedance bandwidth results in the variation of the current and field distributions. In this regard, this work adopts the concept of characteristic modes to gain an initial understanding of the perturbation mechanism of the rectangular patch when loaded with a slot. The performance of microstrip antennas with finite ground plane is then studied using full-wave simulation. It has been found that the distribution of the induced current density is highly dependent on the orientation of the slot The incorporation of a narrow slot suppresses the nearby orthogonal eigen mode and, as a consequence, the radiation behavior is affected. Specifically, in the presence of biological tissues in the near-field region, both antenna input impedance properties and the realized gain are dependent on the slot orientation. Different examples are included for understanding the impact of slot loading on the energy absorption by biological tissues, by calculating the the specific absorption rate (SAR). The proposed analysis facilitates the design of miniaturized antenna geometries for biomedical applications via systematic loading of narrow slots.

Reliable training of generative adversarial networks (GANs) typically require massive datasets in order to model complicated distributions. However, in several applications, training samples obey invariances that are \textit{a priori} known; for example, in complex physics simulations, the training data obey universal laws encoded as well-defined mathematical equations. In this paper, we propose a new generative modeling approach, InvNet, that can efficiently model data spaces with known invariances. We devise an adversarial training algorithm to encode them into data distribution. We validate our framework in three experimental settings: generating images with fixed motifs; solving nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs); and reconstructing two-phase microstructures with desired statistical properties. We complement our experiments with several theoretical results.
