Single image super-resolution (SR) is an established pixel-level vision task aimed at reconstructing a high-resolution image from its degraded low-resolution counterpart. Despite the notable advancements achieved by leveraging deep neural networks for SR, most existing deep learning architectures feature an extensive number of layers, leading to high computational complexity and substantial memory demands. These issues become particularly pronounced in the context of infrared image SR, where infrared devices often have stringent storage and computational constraints. To mitigate these challenges, we introduce a novel, efficient, and precise single infrared image SR model, termed the Lightweight Information Split Network (LISN). The LISN comprises four main components: shallow feature extraction, deep feature extraction, dense feature fusion, and high-resolution infrared image reconstruction. A key innovation within this model is the introduction of the Lightweight Information Split Block (LISB) for deep feature extraction. The LISB employs a sequential process to extract hierarchical features, which are then aggregated based on the relevance of the features under consideration. By integrating channel splitting and shift operations, the LISB successfully strikes an optimal balance between enhanced SR performance and a lightweight framework. Comprehensive experimental evaluations reveal that the proposed LISN achieves superior performance over contemporary state-of-the-art methods in terms of both SR quality and model complexity, affirming its efficacy for practical deployment in resource-constrained infrared imaging applications.

Fundus photography, in combination with the ultra-wide-angle fundus (UWF) techniques, becomes an indispensable diagnostic tool in clinical settings by offering a more comprehensive view of the retina. Nonetheless, UWF fluorescein angiography (UWF-FA) necessitates the administration of a fluorescent dye via injection into the patient's hand or elbow unlike UWF scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (UWF-SLO). To mitigate potential adverse effects associated with injections, researchers have proposed the development of cross-modality medical image generation algorithms capable of converting UWF-SLO images into their UWF-FA counterparts. Current image generation techniques applied to fundus photography encounter difficulties in producing high-resolution retinal images, particularly in capturing minute vascular lesions. To address these issues, we introduce a novel conditional generative adversarial network (UWAFA-GAN) to synthesize UWF-FA from UWF-SLO. This approach employs multi-scale generators and an attention transmit module to efficiently extract both global structures and local lesions. Additionally, to counteract the image blurriness issue that arises from training with misaligned data, a registration module is integrated within this framework. Our method performs non-trivially on inception scores and details generation. Clinical user studies further indicate that the UWF-FA images generated by UWAFA-GAN are clinically comparable to authentic images in terms of diagnostic reliability. Empirical evaluations on our proprietary UWF image datasets elucidate that UWAFA-GAN outperforms extant methodologies. The code is accessible at https://github.com/Tinysqua/UWAFA-GAN.

The early detection of a pulmonary embolism (PE) is critical for enhancing patient survival rates. Both image-based and non-image-based features are of utmost importance in medical classification tasks. In a clinical setting, physicians tend to rely on the contextual information provided by Electronic Medical Records (EMR) to interpret medical imaging. However, very few models effectively integrate clinical information with imaging data. To address this shortcoming, we suggest a multimodal fusion methodology, termed PE-MVCNet, which capitalizes on Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography imaging and EMR data. This method comprises the Image-only module with an integrated multi-view block, the EMR-only module, and the Cross-modal Attention Fusion (CMAF) module. These modules cooperate to extract comprehensive features that subsequently generate predictions for PE. We conducted experiments using the publicly accessible Stanford University Medical Center dataset, achieving an AUROC of 94.1%, an accuracy rate of 90.2%, and an F1 score of 90.6%. Our proposed model outperforms existing methodologies, corroborating that our multimodal fusion model excels compared to models that use a single data modality. Recently, diffusion models have gained significant attention as a novel set of deep learning-based generative methods. These models attempt to sample data from a Gaussian distribution that adheres to a target distribution, and have been successfully adapted to the reconstruction of MRI data. However, as an unconditional generative model, the diffusion model typically disrupts image coordination because of the consistent projection of data introduced by conditional bootstrap. This often results in image fragmentation and incoherence. Furthermore, the inherent limitations of the diffusion model often lead to excessive smoothing of the generated images. In the same vein, some deep learning-based models often suffer from poor generalization performance, meaning their effectiveness is greatly affected by different acceleration factors. To address these challenges, we propose a novel diffusion model-based MRI reconstruction method, named TC-DiffRecon, which does not rely on a specific acceleration factor for training. We also suggest the incorporation of the MF-UNet module, designed to enhance the quality of MRI images generated by the model while mitigating the over-smoothing issue to a certain extent. During the image generation sampling process, we employ a novel TCKG module and a Coarse-to-Fine sampling scheme. These additions aim to harmonize image texture, expedite the sampling process, while achieving data consistency. Our source code is available at https://github.com/JustlfC03/TC-DiffRecon.

Given the broad application of infrared technology across diverse fields, there is an increasing emphasis on investigating super-resolution techniques for infrared images within the realm of deep learning. Despite the impressive results of current Transformer-based methods in image super-resolution tasks, their reliance on the self-attentive mechanism intrinsic to the Transformer architecture results in images being treated as one-dimensional sequences, thereby neglecting their inherent two-dimensional structure. Moreover, infrared images exhibit a uniform pixel distribution and a limited gradient range, posing challenges for the model to capture effective feature information. Consequently, we suggest a potent Transformer model, termed Large Kernel Transformer (LKFormer), to address this issue. Specifically, we have designed a Large Kernel Residual Attention (LKRA) module with linear complexity. This mainly employs depth-wise convolution with large kernels to execute non-local feature modeling, thereby substituting the standard self-attentive layer. Additionally, we have devised a novel feed-forward network structure called Gated-Pixel Feed-Forward Network (GPFN) to augment the LKFormer's capacity to manage the information flow within the network. Comprehensive experimental results reveal that our method surpasses the most advanced techniques available, using fewer parameters and yielding considerably superior performance. The source code will be available at https://github.com/sad192/large-kernel-Transformer.

Chest X-rays (CXRs) are commonly utilized as a low-dose modality for lung screening. Nonetheless, the efficacy of CXRs is somewhat impeded, given that approximately 75% of the lung area overlaps with bone, which in turn hampers the detection and diagnosis of diseases. As a remedial measure, bone suppression techniques have been introduced. The current dual-energy subtraction imaging technique in the clinic requires costly equipment and subjects being exposed to high radiation. To circumvent these issues, deep learning-based image generation algorithms have been proposed. However, existing methods fall short in terms of producing high-quality images and capturing texture details, particularly with pulmonary vessels. To address these issues, this paper proposes a new bone suppression framework, termed BS-Diff, that comprises a conditional diffusion model equipped with a U-Net architecture and a simple enhancement module to incorporate an autoencoder. Our proposed network cannot only generate soft tissue images with a high bone suppression rate but also possesses the capability to capture fine image details. Additionally, we compiled the largest dataset since 2010, including data from 120 patients with high-definition, high-resolution paired CXRs and soft tissue images collected by our affiliated hospital. Extensive experiments, comparative analyses, ablation studies, and clinical evaluations indicate that the proposed BS-Diff outperforms several bone-suppression models across multiple metrics. Survival prediction plays a crucial role in assisting clinicians with the development of cancer treatment protocols. Recent evidence shows that multimodal data can help in the diagnosis of cancer disease and improve survival prediction. Currently, deep learning-based approaches have experienced increasing success in survival prediction by integrating pathological images and gene expression data. However, most existing approaches overlook the intra-modality latent information and the complex inter-modality correlations. Furthermore, existing modalities do not fully exploit the immense representational capabilities of neural networks for feature aggregation and disregard the importance of relationships between features. Therefore, it is highly recommended to address these issues in order to enhance the prediction performance by proposing a novel deep learning-based method. We propose a novel framework named Two-stream Transformer-based Multimodal Fusion Network for survival prediction (TTMFN), which integrates pathological images and gene expression data. In TTMFN, we present a two-stream multimodal co-attention transformer module to take full advantage of the complex relationships between different modalities and the potential connections within the modalities. Additionally, we develop a multi-head attention pooling approach to effectively aggregate the feature representations of the two modalities. The experiment results on four datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas demonstrate that TTMFN can achieve the best performance or competitive results compared to the state-of-the-art methods in predicting the overall survival of patients.

Timely and accurate prognosis and management are essential due to its high mortality rate. However, conventional methods heavily rely on subjective clinician expertise, which can lead to inaccurate diagnoses and delays in treatment. Artificial intelligence (AI) models have been explored to assist clinicians, but many prior studies focused on model modification without considering domain knowledge. This paper introduces a novel deep learning algorithm, GCS-ICHNet, which integrates multimodal brain CT image data and the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score to improve ICH prognosis. The algorithm utilizes a transformer-based fusion module for assessment. However, Fluorescein Angiography (FA) and UWF-FA require injecting sodium fluorescein which may have detrimental influences. To avoid negative impacts, cross-modality medical image generation algorithms have been proposed. Nevertheless, current methods in fundus imaging could not produce high-resolution images and are unable to capture tiny vascular lesion areas. This paper proposes a novel conditional generative adversarial network (UWAT-GAN) to synthesize UWF-FA from UWF-SLO. Using multi-scale generators and a fusion module patch to better extract global and local information, our model can generate high-resolution images. Moreover, an attention transmit module is proposed to help the decoder learn effectively. Besides, a supervised approach is used to train the network using multiple new weighted losses on different scales of data. In practice, such a multiphase CECT scan inherently takes longer time and deposits much more radiation dose into a patient body than a regular CT scan, and reduction of the radiation dose typically compromise the CECT image quality and its diagnostic value. With Joint Condition and Circle-Supervision, here we propose a novel Poisson Flow Generative Model (JCCS-PFGM) to promote the progressive low-dose reconstruction for multiphase CECT. JCCS-PFGM is characterized by the following three aspects: a progressive low-dose reconstruction scheme, a circle-supervision strategy, and a joint condition mechanism. Our extensive experiments are performed on a clinical dataset consisting of 11436 images. The results show that our JCCS-PFGM achieves promising PSNR up to 46.3dB, SSIM up to 98.5%, and MAE down to 9.67 HU averagely on phases I, II and III, in quantitative evaluations, as well as gains high-quality readable visualizations in qualitative assessments. All of these findings reveal our method a great potential to be adapted for clinical CECT scans at a much-reduced radiation dose.

Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) technique, which reduces the radiation harm to human bodies, is now attracting increasing interest in the medical imaging field. As the image quality is degraded by low dose radiation, LDCT exams require specialized reconstruction methods or denoising algorithms. However, most of the recent effective methods overlook the inner-structure of the original projection data (sinogram) which limits their denoising ability. The inner-structure of the sinogram represents special characteristics of the data in the sinogram domain. By maintaining this structure while denoising, the noise can be obviously restrained. Therefore, we propose an LDCT denoising network namely Sinogram Inner-Structure Transformer (SIST) to reduce the noise by utilizing the inner-structure in the sinogram domain. Specifically, we study the CT imaging mechanism and statistical characteristics of sinogram to design the sinogram inner-structure loss including the global and local inner-structure for restoring high-quality CT images. Besides, we propose a sinogram transformer module to better extract sinogram features. The transformer architecture using a self-attention mechanism can exploit interrelations between projections of different view angles, which achieves an outstanding performance in sinogram denoising. Furthermore, in order to improve the performance in the image domain, we propose the image reconstruction module to complementarily denoise both in the sinogram and image domain.

3D complete renal structures(CRS) segmentation targets on segmenting the kidneys, tumors, renal arteries and veins in one inference. Once successful, it will provide preoperative plans and intraoperative guidance for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy(LPN), playing a key role in the renal cancer treatment. However, no success has been reported in 3D CRS segmentation due to the complex shapes of renal structures, low contrast and large anatomical variation. In this study, we utilize the adversarial ensemble learning and propose Ensemble Multi-condition GAN(EnMcGAN) for 3D CRS segmentation for the first time. Its contribution is three-fold. 1)Inspired by windowing, we propose the multi-windowing committee which divides CTA image into multiple narrow windows with different window centers and widths enhancing the contrast for salient boundaries and soft tissues. And then, it builds an ensemble segmentation model on these narrow windows to fuse the segmentation superiorities and improve whole segmentation quality. 2)We propose the multi-condition GAN which equips the segmentation model with multiple discriminators to encourage the segmented structures meeting their real shape conditions, thus improving the shape feature extraction ability. 3)We propose the adversarial weighted ensemble module which uses the trained discriminators to evaluate the quality of segmented structures, and normalizes these evaluation scores for the ensemble weights directed at the input image, thus enhancing the ensemble results. 122 patients are enrolled in this study and the mean Dice coefficient of the renal structures achieves 84.6%. Extensive experiments with promising results on renal structures reveal powerful segmentation accuracy and great clinical significance in renal cancer treatment.

This paper reports the design and implementation of a three-link brachiation robot. The robot is able to travel along horizontal monkey bars using continuous arm swings. We build a full order dynamics model for the robot and formulate each cycle of robot swing motion as an optimal control problem. The iterative Linear Quadratic Regulator (iLQR) algorithm is used to find the optimal control strategy during one swing. We select suitable robot design parameters by comparing the cost of robot motion generated by the iLQR algorithm for different robot designs. In particular, using this approach we show the importance of having a body link and low inertia arms for efficient brachiation. Further, we propose a trajectory tracking controller that combines a cascaded PID controller and an input-output linearization controller to enable the robot to track desired trajectory precisely and reject external disturbance during brachiation. Experiments on the simulated robot and the real robot demonstrate that the robot can robustly swing between monkey bars with same or different spacing of handholds.
