Inpainting has recently been proposed as a successful deep learning technique for unsupervised medical image model discovery. The masks used for inpainting are generally independent of the dataset and are not tailored to perform on different given classes of anatomy. In this work, we introduce a method for generating shape-aware masks for inpainting, which aims at learning the statistical shape prior. We hypothesize that although the variation of masks improves the generalizability of inpainting models, the shape of the masks should follow the topology of the organs of interest. Hence, we propose an unsupervised guided masking approach based on an off-the-shelf inpainting model and a superpixel over-segmentation algorithm to generate a wide range of shape-dependent masks. Experimental results on abdominal MR image reconstruction show the superiority of our proposed masking method over standard methods using square-shaped or dataset of irregular shape masks.

Automated segmentation of retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images has become an important recent direction in machine learning for medical applications. We hypothesize that the anatomic structure of layers and their high-frequency variation in OCT images make retinal OCT a fitting choice for extracting spectral-domain features and combining them with spatial domain features. In this work, we present $Υ$-Net, an architecture that combines the frequency domain features with the image domain to improve the segmentation performance of OCT images. The results of this work demonstrate that the introduction of two branches, one for spectral and one for spatial domain features, brings a very significant improvement in fluid segmentation performance and allows outperformance as compared to the well-known U-Net model. Our improvement was 13% on the fluid segmentation dice score and 1.9% on the average dice score. Finally, removing selected frequency ranges in the spectral domain demonstrates the impact of these features on the fluid segmentation outperformance.

The lack of sufficient annotated image data is a common issue in medical image segmentation. For some organs and densities, the annotation may be scarce, leading to poor model training convergence, while other organs have plenty of annotated data. In this work, we present MetaMedSeg, a gradient-based meta-learning algorithm that redefines the meta-learning task for the volumetric medical data with the goal to capture the variety between the slices. We also explore different weighting schemes for gradients aggregation, arguing that different tasks might have different complexity, and hence, contribute differently to the initialization. We propose an importance-aware weighting scheme to train our model. In the experiments, we present an evaluation of the medical decathlon dataset by extracting 2D slices from CT and MRI volumes of different organs and performing semantic segmentation. The results show that our proposed volumetric task definition leads to up to 30% improvement in terms of IoU compared to related baselines. The proposed update rule is also shown to improve the performance for complex scenarios where the data distribution of the target organ is very different from the source organs.

Digital image processing techniques have wide applications in different scientific fields including the medicine. By use of image processing algorithms, physicians have been more successful in diagnosis of different diseases and have achieved much better treatment results. In this paper, we propose an automatic method for segmenting the skin lesions and extracting features that are associated to them. At this aim, a combination of Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF) and Active Contour Model (ACM), is used. In the suggested method, at first region of skin lesion is segmented from the whole skin image, and then some features like the mean, variance, RGB and HSV parameters are extracted from the segmented region. Comparing the segmentation results, by use of Otsu thresholding, our proposed method, shows the superiority of our procedure over the Otsu theresholding method. Segmentation of the skin lesion by the proposed method and Otsu thresholding compared the results with physician's manual method. The proposed method for skin lesion segmentation, which is a combination of SURF and ACM, gives the best result. For empirical evaluation of our method, we have applied it on twenty different skin lesion images. Obtained results confirm the high performance, speed and accuracy of our method.
