In the realm of battery charging, several complex aspects demand meticulous attention, including thermal management, capacity degradation, and the need for rapid charging while maintaining safety and battery lifespan. By employing the imitation learning paradigm, this manuscript introduces an innovative solution to confront the inherent challenges often associated with conventional predictive control strategies for constrained battery charging. A significant contribution of this study lies in the adaptation of the Dataset Aggregation (DAGGER) algorithm to address scenarios where battery parameters are uncertain, and internal states are unobservable. Results drawn from a practical battery simulator that incorporates an electrochemical model highlight substantial improvements in battery charging performance, particularly in meeting all safety constraints and outperforming traditional strategies in computational processing.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are ubiquitous in modern energy storage systems, highlighting the critical need to comprehend and optimize their performance. Yet, battery models often exhibit poor parameter identifiability which hinders the development of effective battery management strategies and impacts their overall performance, longevity, and safety. This manuscript explores the integration of Fisher Information (FI) theory with Model Predictive Control (MPC) for battery charging. The study addresses the inherent hurdles in accurately estimating battery model parameters due to nonlinear dynamics and uncertainty. Our proposed method aims to ensure safe battery charging and enhance real-time parameter estimation capabilities by leveraging adaptive control strategies guided by FI metrics. Simulation results underscore the effectiveness of our approach in mitigating parameter identifiability issues, offering promising solutions for improving the control of batteries during safe charging process.

Combining machine learning with physics is a trending approach for discovering unknown dynamics, and one of the most intensively studied frameworks is the physics-informed neural network (PINN). However, PINN often fails to optimize the network due to its difficulty in concurrently minimizing multiple losses originating from the system's governing equations. This problem can be more serious when the system's states are unmeasurable, like lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). In this work, we introduce a robust method for training PINN that uses fewer loss terms and thus constructs a less complex landscape for optimization. In particular, instead of having loss terms from each differential equation, this method embeds the dynamics into a loss function that quantifies the error between observed and predicted system outputs. This is accomplished by numerically integrating the predicted states from the neural network(NN) using known dynamics and transforming them to obtain a sequence of predicted outputs. Minimizing such a loss optimizes the NN to predict states consistent with observations given the physics. Further, the system's parameters can be added to the optimization targets. To demonstrate the ability of this method to perform various modeling and control tasks, we apply it to a battery model to concurrently estimate its states and parameters.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the saturation of public health services worldwide. In this scenario, the early diagnosis of SARS-Cov-2 infections can help to stop or slow the spread of the virus and to manage the demand upon health services. This is especially important when resources are also being stretched by heightened demand linked to other seasonal diseases, such as the flu. In this context, the organisers of the DiCOVA 2021 challenge have collected a database with the aim of diagnosing COVID-19 through the use of coughing audio samples. This work presents the details of the automatic system for COVID-19 detection from cough recordings presented by team PANACEA. This team consists of researchers from two European academic institutions and one company: EURECOM (France), University of Granada (Spain), and Biometric Vox S.L. (Spain). We developed several systems based on established signal processing and machine learning methods. Our best system employs a Teager energy operator cepstral coefficients (TECCs) based frontend and Light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) backend. The AUC obtained by this system on the test set is 76.31% which corresponds to a 10% improvement over the official baseline.
