Localization is envisioned as a key enabler to satisfy the requirements of communication and context-aware services in the fifth/sixth generation (5G/6G) communication systems. User localization can be achieved based on delay and angle estimation using uplink/downlink pilot signals. However, hardware impairments (HWIs) (such as phase noise and mutual coupling) distort the signals at both the transmitter and receiver sides and thus affect the localization performance. While this impact can be ignored at lower frequencies with less severe HWIs, and less stringent localization requirements, modeling and analysis efforts are needed for high-frequency bands to assess degradation in localization accuracy due to HWIs. In this work, we model various types of impairments for a mmWave multiple-input-multiple-output communication system and conduct a misspecified Cramér-Rao bound analysis to evaluate HWI-induced performance losses in terms of angle/delay estimation and the resulting 3D position/orientation estimation error. We also investigate the effect of individual and overall HWIs on communication in terms of symbol error rate (SER). Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that each type of HWI leads to a different level of degradation in angle and delay estimation performance, and the prominent impairment factors on delay estimation will have a dominant negative effect on SER.

In this work, we demonstrate the offline FPGA realization of both recurrent and feedforward neural network (NN)-based equalizers for nonlinearity compensation in coherent optical transmission systems. First, we present a realization pipeline showing the conversion of the models from Python libraries to the FPGA chip synthesis and implementation. Then, we review the main alternatives for the hardware implementation of nonlinear activation functions. The main results are divided into three parts: a performance comparison, an analysis of how activation functions are implemented, and a report on the complexity of the hardware. The performance in Q-factor is presented for the cases of bidirectional long-short-term memory coupled with convolutional NN (biLSTM + CNN) equalizer, CNN equalizer, and standard 1-StpS digital back-propagation (DBP) for the simulation and experiment propagation of a single channel dual-polarization (SC-DP) 16QAM at 34 GBd along 17x70km of LEAF. The biLSTM+CNN equalizer provides a similar result to DBP and a 1.7 dB Q-factor gain compared with the chromatic dispersion compensation baseline in the experimental dataset. After that, we assess the Q-factor and the impact of hardware utilization when approximating the activation functions of NN using Taylor series, piecewise linear, and look-up table (LUT) approximations. We also show how to mitigate the approximation errors with extra training and provide some insights into possible gradient problems in the LUT approximation. Finally, to evaluate the complexity of hardware implementation to achieve 200G and 400G throughput, fixed-point NN-based equalizers with approximated activation functions are developed and implemented in an FPGA.

We introduce a framework for linear precoder design over a massive multiple-input multiple-output downlink system in the presence of nonlinear power amplifiers (PAs). By studying the spatial characteristics of the distortion, we demonstrate that conventional linear precoding techniques steer nonlinear distortions towards the users. We show that, by taking into account PA nonlinearity, one can design linear precoders that reduce, and in single-user scenarios, even completely remove the distortion transmitted in the direction of the users. This, however, is achieved at the price of a reduced array gain. To address this issue, we present precoder optimization algorithms that simultaneously take into account the effects of array gain, distortion, multiuser interference, and receiver noise. Specifically, we derive an expression for the achievable sum rate and propose an iterative algorithm that attempts to find the precoding matrix which maximizes this expression. Moreover, using a model for PA power consumption, we propose an algorithm that attempts to find the precoding matrix that minimizes the consumed power for a given minimum achievable sum rate. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed distortion-aware precoding techniques provide significant improvements in spectral and energy efficiency compared to conventional linear precoders.

In this paper, we describe a novel framework for digital predistortion (DPD) based linearization of strongly nonlinear millimeter-wave active antenna arrays. Specifically, we formulate a piecewise (PW) closed-loop (CL) DPD solution and low-complexity gradient-adaptive parameter learning algorithms, together with a region partitioning method, that can efficiently handle deep compression of the PA units. The impact of beamsteering on the DPD performance is studied, showing strong beam-dependence, thus necessitating frequent updating of the DPD. In order to facilitate fast adaptation, an inexpensive, non-iterative, pruning algorithm is introduced, which allows to significantly reduce the amount of model coefficients. The proposed methods are validated with extensive over-the-air RF measurements on a 64-element active antenna array transmitter operating at 28 GHz carrier frequency and transmitting a 400 MHz 5G New Radio (NR) standard-compliant orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform. The obtained results demonstrate the excellent linearization capabilities of the proposed solution, conforming to the new 5G NR requirements for frequency range 2 (FR2) in terms of both inband waveform quality and out-of-band emissions. The proposed PW-CL DPD is shown to outperform the state-of-the-art PW DPD based on the indirect learning architecture, as well as the classical single-polynomial based DPD solutions in terms of linearization performance and computational complexity by a clear margin.

We particularly focus on the case when the transmitter is equipped with nonlinear power amplifiers. Using Bussgang's theorem, we formulate a lower bound on the achievable sum rate in the presence of hardware impairments, and maximize it using projected gradient ascent. We provide numerical examples that demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed distortion-aware scheme for precoding over a millimeter-wave~channel.

We consider timing and frequency synchronization for the massive multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink where 1-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are used at the base station (BS). We focus on the practically relevant scenario in which orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is used to communicate over frequency-selective channels. Our contributions are twofold. First, we use Bussgang's theorem to analyze the impact on performance caused by timing and frequency offsets in the presence of 1-bit DACs at the BS. Second, we demonstrate the efficacy of the widely used Schmidl-Cox synchronization algorithm. Our results demonstrate that the 1-bit massive MU-MIMO-OFDM downlink is resilient against timing and frequency offsets.

This paper presents an investigation into parameter adaptation in behavioral model--based digital predistortion for radio frequency power amplifiers. A novel measurement setup framework that emulates real--time adaptation in transmitters is developed that allows evaluation of different parameters, configurations and adaptation algorithms. This setup relieves the need for full feedback loops for parameter adaptation while providing the flexibility needed in the design process of parameter adaptation.
Issues such as convergence speed, sensitivity to quantization noise in the feedback loop and predistortion performance are investigated for some different parameter update algorithms using the proposed measurement setup. The approach presented in this paper allows the possibility to analyze different aspects of digital predistortion adaptation algorithms, and is an important enabling step for further research on parameter adaptation before the real--time hardware is implemented for use.

This paper presents a new black-box technique for modeling long term memory effects in radio frequency power amplifiers. The proposed technique extends commonly used behavioral models by utilizing parameters that dynamically change depending on a long term memory effect while kee** the original model structure intact. This enables us to accurately track and model transient changes in power amplifier characteristics that vary slowly and are induced by the input signal.
Identification of long term memory effects is discussed and an iterative identification algorithm for the model parameters is proposed. The model is experimentally tested on a 100 Watt Doherty power amplifier with a 4 MHz Gaussian noise signal that has a step--like change in the amplitude, representative of a realistic communication signal with bursty behavior and a 20 MHz 3GPP LTE test data. Results of behavioral modeling show a 2-2.5 dB and 5-6 dB improvement in average and peak NMSE modeling performance respectively, which shows the suitability of the technique to model bursty signals.
