Ultrasound computed tomography (USCT), as an emerging technology, can provide multiple quantitative parametric images of human tissue, such as sound speed and attenuation images, distinguishing it from conventional B-mode (reflection) ultrasound imaging. Full waveform inversion (FWI) is acknowledged as a technique with the greatest potential for reconstructing high-resolution sound speed images in USCT. However, traditional FWI for sound speed image reconstruction suffers from high sensitivity to the initial model caused by its strong non-convex nonlinearity, resulting in poor performance when ultrasound signals are at high frequencies. This limitation significantly restricts the application of FWI in the USCT imaging field. In this paper, we propose an untrained neural network (UNN) that can be integrated into the traditional iteration-based FWI framework as an implicit regularization prior. This integration allows for seamless deployment as a plug-and-play module within existing FWI algorithms or their variants. Notably, the proposed UNN method can be trained in an unsupervised fashion, a vital aspect in medical imaging where ground truth data is often unavailable. Evaluations of the numerical simulation and phantom experiment of the breast demonstrate that the proposed UNN improves the robustness of image reconstruction, reduces image artifacts, and achieves great image contrast. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first attempt to propose an implicit UNN for FWI in reconstructing sound speed images for USCT.

Focusing on identification, this paper develops a class of convex optimization-based criteria and correspondingly the recursive algorithms to estimate the parameter vector $θ^{*}$ of a stochastic dynamic system. Not only do the criteria include the classical least-squares estimator but also the $L_l=|\cdot|^l, l\geq 1$, the Huber, the Log-cosh, and the Quantile costs as special cases. First, we prove that the minimizers of the convex optimization-based criteria converge to $θ^{*}$ with probability one. Second, the recursive algorithms are proposed to find the estimates, which minimize the convex optimization-based criteria, and it is shown that these estimates also converge to the true parameter vector with probability one. Numerical examples are given, justifying the performance of the proposed algorithms including the strong consistency of the estimates, the robustness against outliers in the observations, and higher efficiency in online computation compared with the kernel-based regularization method due to the recursive nature.

This paper focuses on the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) channel estimator for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with one-bit quantization at the receiver side. Despite its optimality and significance in estimation theory, the MMSE channel estimator has not been fully investigated in this context due to its general non-linearity and computational complexity. Instead, the typically suboptimal Bussgang linear MMSE (BLMMSE) estimator has been widely adopted. In this work, we develop a new framework to compute the MMSE channel estimator that hinges on computation of the orthant probability of the multivariate normal distribution. Based on this framework, we determine a necessary and sufficient condition for the BLMMSE channel estimator to be optimal and equivalent to the MMSE estimator. Under the assumption of specific channel correlation or pilot symbols, we further utilize the framework to derive analytical expressions for the MMSE channel estimator that are particularly convenient for computation when certain system dimensions become large, thereby enabling a comparison between the BLMMSE and MMSE channel estimators in these cases.

This paper studies quantized corrupted sensing where the measurements are contaminated by unknown corruption and then quantized by a dithered uniform quantizer. We establish uniform guarantees for Lasso that ensure the accurate recovery of all signals and corruptions using a single draw of the sub-Gaussian sensing matrix and uniform dither. For signal and corruption with structured priors (e.g., sparsity, low-rankness), our uniform error rate for constrained Lasso typically coincides with the non-uniform one [Sun, Cui and Liu, 2022] up to logarithmic factors. By contrast, our uniform error rate for unconstrained Lasso exhibits worse dependence on the structured parameters due to regularization parameters larger than the ones for non-uniform recovery. For signal and corruption living in the ranges of some Lipschitz continuous generative models (referred to as generative priors), we achieve uniform recovery via constrained Lasso with a measurement number proportional to the latent dimensions of the generative models. Our treatments to the two kinds of priors are (nearly) unified and share the common key ingredients of (global) quantized product embedding (QPE) property, which states that the dithered uniform quantization (universally) preserves inner product. As a by-product, our QPE result refines the one in [Xu and Jacques, 2020] under sub-Gaussian random matrix, and in this specific instance we are able to sharpen the uniform error decaying rate (for the projected-back projection estimator with signals in some convex symmetric set) presented therein from $O(m^{-1/16})$ to $O(m^{-1/8})$.

Most research in synthetic speech detection (SSD) focuses on improving performance on standard noise-free datasets. However, in actual situations, noise interference is usually present, causing significant performance degradation in SSD systems. To improve noise robustness, this paper proposes a dual-branch knowledge distillation synthetic speech detection (DKDSSD) method. Specifically, a parallel data flow of the clean teacher branch and the noisy student branch is designed, and interactive fusion module and response-based teacher-student paradigms are proposed to guide the training of noisy data from both the data distribution and decision-making perspectives. In the noisy student branch, speech enhancement is introduced initially for denoising, aiming to reduce the interference of strong noise. The proposed interactive fusion combines denoised features and noisy features to mitigate the impact of speech distortion and ensure consistency with the data distribution of the clean branch. The teacher-student paradigm maps the student's decision space to the teacher's decision space, enabling noisy speech to behave similarly to clean speech. Additionally, a joint training method is employed to optimize both branches for achieving global optimality. Experimental results based on multiple datasets demonstrate that the proposed method performs effectively in noisy environments and maintains its performance in cross-dataset experiments. Source code is available at https://github.com/fchest/DKDSSD.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided spatial shift keying (SSK) wireless communication systems with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, we study the average bit error probability (ABEP) of two RIS-SSK systems based on intelligent reflection and blind reflection modes. For the intelligent RIS-SSK scheme, we first derive the conditional pairwise error probability of the composite channel through maximum likelihood (ML) detection. Subsequently, we derive the probability density function of the combined channel. Due to the intricacies of the composite channel formulation, an exact closed-form ABEP expression is unattainable through direct derivation. To this end, we resort to employing the Gaussian-Chebyshev quadrature method to estimate the results. Additionally, we employ Q-function approximation to derive the non-exact closed-form expression in the presence of channel estimation errors. For the blind RIS-SSK scheme, we derive both closed-form ABEP expression and asymptotic ABEP expression with imperfect CSI by adopting the ML detector. To offer deeper insights, we explore the impact of discrete reflection phase shifts on the performance of the RIS-SSK system. Lastly, we extensively validate all the analytical derivations via Monte Carlo simulations.

This paper presents a French text-to-speech synthesis system for the Blizzard Challenge 2023. The challenge consists of two tasks: generating high-quality speech from female speakers and generating speech that closely resembles specific individuals. Regarding the competition data, we conducted a screening process to remove missing or erroneous text data. We organized all symbols except for phonemes and eliminated symbols that had no pronunciation or zero duration. Additionally, we added word boundary and start/end symbols to the text, which we have found to improve speech quality based on our previous experience. For the Spoke task, we performed data augmentation according to the competition rules. We used an open-source G2P model to transcribe the French texts into phonemes. As the G2P model uses the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), we applied the same transcription process to the provided competition data for standardization. However, due to compiler limitations in recognizing special symbols from the IPA chart, we followed the rules to convert all phonemes into the phonetic scheme used in the competition data. Finally, we resampled all competition audio to a uniform sampling rate of 16 kHz. We employed a VITS-based acoustic model with the hifigan vocoder. For the Spoke task, we trained a multi-speaker model and incorporated speaker information into the duration predictor, vocoder, and flow layers of the model. The evaluation results of our system showed a quality MOS score of 3.6 for the Hub task and 3.4 for the Spoke task, placing our system at an average level among all participating teams.

Interleaved training has been studied for single-user and multi-user massive MIMO downlink with either fully-digital or hybrid beamforming. However, the impact of channel correlation on its average training overhead is rarely addressed. In this paper, we explore the channel correlation to improve the interleaved training for single-user massive MIMO downlink. For the beam-domain interleaved training, we propose a modified scheme by optimizing the beam training codebook. The basic antenna-domain interleaved training is also improved by dynamically adjusting the training order of the base station (BS) antennas during the training process based on the values of the already trained channels. Exact and simplified approximate expressions of the average training length are derived in closed-form for the basic and modified beam-domain schemes and the basic antenna-domain scheme in correlated channels. For the modified antenna-domain scheme, a deep neural network (DNN)-based approximation is provided for fast performance evaluation. Analytical results and simulations verify the accuracy of our derived training length expressions and explicitly reveal the impact of system parameters on the average training length. In addition, the modified beam/antenna-domain schemes are shown to have a shorter average training length compared to the basic schemes.

In frequency division duplexing (FDD) cell-free massive MIMO, the acquisition of the channel state information (CSI) is very challenging because of the large overhead required for the training and feedback of the downlink channels of multiple cooperating base stations (BSs). In this paper, for systems with partial uplink-downlink channel reciprocity, and a general spatial domain channel model with variations in the average port power and correlation among port coefficients, we propose a joint-port-selection-based CSI acquisition and feedback scheme for the downlink transmission with zero-forcing precoding. The scheme uses an eigenvalue-decomposition-based transformation to reduce the feedback overhead by exploring the port correlation. We derive the sum-rate of the system for any port selection. Based on the sum-rate result, we propose a low-complexity greedy-search-based joint port selection (GS-JPS) algorithm. Moreover, to adapt to fast time-varying scenarios, a supervised deep learning-enhanced joint port selection (DL-JPS) algorithm is proposed. Simulations verify the effectiveness of our proposed schemes and their advantage over existing port-selection channel acquisition schemes.

Self-training is an important technique for solving semi-supervised learning problems. It leverages unlabeled data by generating pseudo-labels and combining them with a limited labeled dataset for training. The effectiveness of self-training heavily relies on the accuracy of these pseudo-labels. In this paper, we introduce doubly robust self-training, a novel semi-supervised algorithm that provably balances between two extremes. When the pseudo-labels are entirely incorrect, our method reduces to a training process solely using labeled data. Conversely, when the pseudo-labels are completely accurate, our method transforms into a training process utilizing all pseudo-labeled data and labeled data, thus increasing the effective sample size. Through empirical evaluations on both the ImageNet dataset for image classification and the nuScenes autonomous driving dataset for 3D object detection, we demonstrate the superiority of the doubly robust loss over the standard self-training baseline.

Task-oriented communications, mostly using learning-based joint source-channel coding (JSCC), aim to design a communication-efficient edge inference system by transmitting task-relevant information to the receiver. However, only transmitting task-relevant information without introducing any redundancy may cause robustness issues in learning due to the channel variations, and the JSCC which directly maps the source data into continuous channel input symbols poses compatibility issues on existing digital communication systems. In this paper, we address these two issues by first investigating the inherent tradeoff between the informativeness of the encoded representations and the robustness to information distortion in the received representations, and then propose a task-oriented communication scheme with digital modulation, named discrete task-oriented JSCC (DT-JSCC), where the transmitter encodes the features into a discrete representation and transmits it to the receiver with the digital modulation scheme. In the DT-JSCC scheme, we develop a robust encoding framework, named robust information bottleneck (RIB), to improve the communication robustness to the channel variations, and derive a tractable variational upper bound of the RIB objective function using the variational approximation to overcome the computational intractability of mutual information. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DT-JSCC achieves better inference performance than the baseline methods with low communication latency, and exhibits robustness to channel variations due to the applied RIB framework.

The convergence of mobile edge computing (MEC) and blockchain is transforming the current computing services in wireless Internet-of-Things networks, by enabling task offloading with security enhancement based on blockchain mining. Yet the existing approaches for these enabling technologies are isolated, providing only tailored solutions for specific services and scenarios. To fill this gap, we propose a novel cooperative task offloading and blockchain mining (TOBM) scheme for a blockchain-based MEC system, where each edge device not only handles computation tasks but also deals with block mining for improving system utility. To address the latency issues caused by the blockchain operation in MEC, we develop a new Proof-of-Reputation consensus mechanism based on a lightweight block verification strategy. To accommodate the highly dynamic environment and high-dimensional system state space, we apply a novel distributed deep reinforcement learning-based approach by using a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed TOBM scheme in terms of enhanced system reward, improved offloading utility with lower blockchain mining latency, and better system utility, compared to the existing cooperative and non-cooperative schemes. The paper concludes with key technical challenges and possible directions for future blockchain-based MEC research.

The block-term tensor decomposition model with multilinear rank-$(L_r,L_r,1)$ terms (or, the "LL1 tensor decomposition" in short) offers a valuable alternative for hyperspectral unmixing (HU) under the linear mixture model. Particularly, the LL1 decomposition ensures the endmember/abundance identifiability in scenarios where such guarantees are not supported by the classic matrix factorization (MF) approaches. However, existing LL1-based HU algorithms use a three-factor parameterization of the tensor (i.e., the hyperspectral image cube), which leads to a number of challenges including high per-iteration complexity, slow convergence, and difficulties in incorporating structural prior information. This work puts forth an LL1 tensor decomposition-based HU algorithm that uses a constrained two-factor re-parameterization of the tensor data. As a consequence, a two-block alternating gradient projection (GP)-based LL1 algorithm is proposed for HU. With carefully designed projection solvers, the GP algorithm enjoys a relatively low per-iteration complexity. Like in MF-based HU, the factors under our parameterization correspond to the endmembers and abundances. Thus, the proposed framework is natural to incorporate physics-motivated priors that arise in HU. The proposed algorithm often attains orders-of-magnitude speedup and substantial HU performance gains compared to the existing three-factor parameterization-based HU algorithms.

In this model, we design a Supervised Attention Module (SAM) based on the attention mechanism, which can capture more accurate and stable long-range dependency in feature maps without introducing much computational cost. Moreover, we propose an intra-class update approach to reconstruct feature maps by aggregating pixels of the same category. Main results: Experimental results on the BraTS 2019 datasets show that the proposed method outperformers the state-of-the-art algorithms in both segmentation performance and computational complexity. Cardiovascular disease has become one of the most significant threats endangering human life and health. Recently, Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring has been transformed into remote cardiac monitoring by Holter surveillance. However, the widely used Holter can bring a great deal of discomfort and inconvenience to the individuals who carry them. We developed a new wireless ECG patch in this work and applied a deep learning framework based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) models. However, we find that the models using the existing techniques are not able to differentiate two main heartbeat types (Supraventricular premature beat and Atrial fibrillation) in our newly obtained dataset, resulting in low accuracy of 58.0 %. We proposed a semi-supervised method to process the badly labelled data samples with using the confidence-level-based training. The experiment results conclude that the proposed method can approach an average accuracy of 90.2 %, i.e., 5.4 % higher than the accuracy of conventional ECG classification methods.

Recent advances in communication technologies and Internet-of-Medical-Things have transformed smart healthcare enabled by artificial intelligence (AI). Traditionally, AI techniques require centralized data collection and processing that may be infeasible in realistic healthcare scenarios due to the high scalability of modern healthcare networks and growing data privacy concerns. Federated Learning (FL), as an emerging distributed collaborative AI paradigm, is particularly attractive for smart healthcare, by coordinating multiple clients (e.g., hospitals) to perform AI training without sharing raw data. Accordingly, we provide a comprehensive survey on the use of FL in smart healthcare. First, we present the recent advances in FL, the motivations, and the requirements of using FL in smart healthcare. The recent FL designs for smart healthcare are then discussed, ranging from resource-aware FL, secure and privacy-aware FL to incentive FL and personalized FL. Subsequently, we provide a state-of-the-art review on the emerging applications of FL in key healthcare domains, including health data management, remote health monitoring, medical imaging, and COVID-19 detection. Several recent FL-based smart healthcare projects are analyzed, and the key lessons learned from the survey are also highlighted. Then, we propose a new federated learning solution which allows local GANs to collaborate and exchange learned parameters with a cloud server, aiming to enrich the global GAN model for generating realistic COVID-19 images without the need for sharing actual data. To enhance the privacy in federated COVID-19 data analytics, we integrate a differential privacy solution at each hospital institution. Moreover, we propose a new blockchain-based FedGAN framework for secure COVID-19 data analytics, by decentralizing the FL process with a new mining solution for low running latency. Simulations results demonstrate the superiority of our approach for COVID-19 detection over the state-of-the-art schemes.

The healthcare industry has witnessed significant transformations in e-health services by using mobile edge computing (MEC) and blockchain to facilitate healthcare operations. Many MEC-blockchain-based schemes have been proposed, but some critical technical challenges still remain, such as low quality of services (QoS), data privacy and system security vulnerabilities. In this paper, we propose a new decentralized health architecture, called BEdgeHealth that integrates MEC and blockchain for data offloading and data sharing in distributed hospital networks. First, a data offloading scheme is proposed where mobile devices can offload health data to a nearby MEC server for efficient computation with privacy awareness. Moreover, we design a data sharing scheme which enables data exchanges among healthcare users by leveraging blockchain and interplanetary file system. Particularly, a smart contract-based authentication mechanism is integrated with MEC to perform decentralized user access verification at the network edge without requiring any central authority. The real-world experiment results and evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed BEdgeHealth architecture in terms of improved QoS with data privacy and security guarantees, compared to the existing schemes.

The convergence of mobile edge computing (MEC) and blockchain is transforming the current computing services in mobile networks, by offering task offloading solutions with security enhancement empowered by blockchain mining. Nevertheless, these important enabling technologies have been studied separately in most existing works. This article proposes a novel cooperative task offloading and block mining (TOBM) scheme for a blockchain-based MEC system where each edge device not only handles data tasks but also deals with block mining for improving the system utility. To address the latency issues caused by the blockchain operation in MEC, we develop a new Proof-of-Reputation consensus mechanism based on a lightweight block verification strategy. A multi-objective function is then formulated to maximize the system utility of the blockchain-based MEC system, by jointly optimizing offloading decision, channel selection, transmit power allocation, and computational resource allocation. We propose a novel distributed deep reinforcement learning-based approach by using a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm. We then develop a game-theoretic solution to model the offloading and mining competition among edge devices as a potential game, and prove the existence of a pure Nash equilibrium. Simulation results demonstrate the significant system utility improvements of our proposed scheme over baseline approaches.

In this paper, the interference mitigation for Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar system with a dechir** receiver is investigated. After dechir** operation, the scattered signals from targets result in beat signals, i.e., the sum of complex exponentials while the interferences lead to chirp-like short pulses. Taking advantage of these different time and frequency features between the useful signals and the interferences, the interference mitigation is formulated as an optimization problem: a sparse and low-rank decomposition of a Hankel matrix constructed by lifting the measurements. Then, an iterative optimization algorithm is proposed to tackle it by exploiting the Alternating Direction of Multipliers (ADMM) scheme. Compared to the existing methods, the proposed approach does not need to detect the interference and also improves the estimation accuracy of the separated useful signals. Both numerical simulations with point-like targets and experiment results with distributed targets (i.e., raindrops) are presented to demonstrate and verify its performance. The results show that the proposed approach is generally applicable for interference mitigation in both stationary and moving target scenarios.

Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been envisioned as a promising paradigm to handle the massive volume of data generated from ubiquitous mobile devices for enabling intelligent services with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Traditionally, AI techniques often require centralized data collection and training in a single entity, e.g., an MEC server, which is now becoming a weak point due to data privacy concerns and high data communication overheads. In this context, federated learning (FL) has been proposed to provide collaborative data training solutions, by coordinating multiple mobile devices to train a shared AI model without exposing their data, which enjoys considerable privacy enhancement. To improve the security and scalability of FL implementation, blockchain as a ledger technology is attractive for realizing decentralized FL training without the need for any central server. Particularly, the integration of FL and blockchain leads to a new paradigm, called FLchain, which potentially transforms intelligent MEC networks into decentralized, secure, and privacy-enhancing systems. This article presents an overview of the fundamental concepts and explores the opportunities of FLchain in MEC networks. We identify several main topics in FLchain design, including communication cost, resource allocation, incentive mechanism, security and privacy protection. The key solutions for FLchain design are provided, and the lessons learned as well as the outlooks are also discussed. Then, we investigate the applications of FLchain in popular MEC domains, such as edge data sharing, edge content caching and edge crowdsensing. Many edge cloud-based system designs have been proposed, but some technical challenges still remain, such as low quality of services (QoS), data privacy and system security due to centralized healthcare architectures. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid approach of data offloading and data sharing for healthcare using edge cloud and blockchain. First, an efficient data offloading scheme is proposed where IoT health data can be offloaded to nearby edge servers for data processing with privacy awareness. Then, a data sharing scheme is integrated to enable data exchange among healthcare users via blockchain. A novel matrix pencil-based interference mitigation approach for FMCW radars is proposed in this paper. The interference-contaminated segment of the beat signal is firstly cut out and then the signal samples in the cut-out region are reconstructed by modeling the beat signal as a sum of complex exponentials and using the matrix pencil method to estimate their parameters. The efficiency of the proposed approach for the interference with different parameters (i.e. interference duration, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and different target scenarios) is investigated by means of numerical simulations. The proposed interference mitigation approach is intensively verified on experimental data. Comparisons of the proposed approach with the zeroing and other beat-frequency interpolation techniques are presented. The results indicate the broad applicability and superiority of the proposed approach, especially in low SNR and long interference duration situations.

To tackle this problem, we apply a masked language model based on ALBERT for composers classification. This work revisits coupled tensor decomposition (CTD)-based hyperspectral super-resolution (HSR). HSR aims at fusing a pair of hyperspectral and multispectral images to recover a super-resolution image (SRI). The vast majority of the HSR approaches take a low-rank matrix recovery perspective. The challenge is that theoretical guarantees for recovering the SRI using low-rank matrix models are either elusive or derived under stringent conditions. A couple of recent CTD-based methods ensure recoverability for the SRI under relatively mild conditions, leveraging on algebraic properties of the canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) and the Tucker decomposition models, respectively. However, the latent factors of both the CPD and Tucker models have no physical interpretations in the context of spectral image analysis, which makes incorporating prior information challenging---but using priors is often essential for enhancing performance in noisy environments. This work employs an idea that models spectral images as tensors following the block-term decomposition model with multilinear rank-$(L_r, L_r, 1)$ terms (i.e., the LL1 model) and formulates the HSR problem as a coupled LL1 tensor decomposition problem. Similar to the existing CTD approaches, recoverability of the SRI is shown under mild conditions. More importantly, the latent factors of the LL1 model can be interpreted as the key constituents of spectral images, i.e., the endmembers' spectral signatures and abundance maps. This connection allows us to easily incorporate prior information for performance enhancement. A flexible algorithmic framework that can work with a series of structural information is proposed to take advantage of the model interpretability. The effectiveness is showcased using simulated and real data.

The support for aerial users has become the focus of recent 3GPP standardizations of 5G, due to their high maneuverability and flexibility for on-demand deployment. In this paper, probabilistic caching is studied for ultra-dense small-cell networks with terrestrial and aerial users, where a dynamic on-off architecture is adopted under a sophisticated path loss model incorporating both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight transmissions. Generally, this paper focuses on the successful download probability (SDP) of user equipments (UEs) from small-cell base stations (SBSs) that cache the requested files under various caching strategies. To be more specific, the SDP is first analyzed using stochastic geometry theory, by considering the distribution of such two-tier UEs and SBSs as Homogeneous Poisson Point Processes. Second, an optimized caching strategy (OCS) is proposed to maximize the average SDP. Third, the performance limits of the average SDP are developed for the popular caching strategy (PCS) and the uniform caching strategy (UCS). Finally, the impacts of the key parameters, such as the SBS density, the cache size, the exponent of Zipf distribution and the height of aerial user, are investigated on the average SDP. The analytical results indicate that the UCS outperforms the PCS if the SBSs are sufficiently dense, while the PCS is better than the UCS if the exponent of Zipf distribution is large enough. Furthermore, the proposed OCS is superior to both the UCS and PCS.

In this paper, we investigate the robust beamforming schemes for a multi-user multiple-input-single-output (MU-MISO) system with per-antenna power constraints and quantized channel direction information (CDI) feedback. Our design objective is to maximize the expectation of the weighted sum-rate performance by means of controlling the interference leakage and properly allocating the power among user equipments (UEs).First, we prove the optimality of the non-robust zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming scheme in the sense of generating the minimum amount of average inter-UE interference under quantized CDI. Then we derive closed-form expressions of the cumulative density function (CDF) of the interference leakage power for the non-robust ZF beamforming scheme, based on which we adjust the leakage thresholds and propose two robust beamforming schemes under per-antenna power constraints with an iterative process to update the per-UE power allocations using the geometric programming (GP). Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed robust beamforming schemes compared with the existing schemes in terms of the average weighted sum-rate performance.

In this paper, we propose a sequential and incremental precoder design for downlink joint transmission (JT) network MIMO systems with imperfect backhaul links. The objective of our design is to minimize the maximum of the sub-stream mean square errors (MSE), which dominates the average bit error rate (BER) performance of the system. In the proposed scheme,we first optimize the precoder at the serving base station (BS), and then sequentially optimize the precoders of non-serving BSs in the JT set according to the descending order of their probabilities of participating in JT. The BS-wise sequential optimization process can improve the system performance when some BSs have to temporarily quit the JT operations because of poor instant backhaul conditions. Besides, the precoder of an additional BS is derived in an incremental way, i.e., the sequentially optimized precoders of previous BSs are fixed, thus the additional precoder plays an incremental part in the multi-BS JT operations. An iterative algorithm is designed to jointly optimize the sub-stream precoder and sub-stream power allocation for each additional BS in the proposed sequential and incremental optimization scheme. Simulations show that, under the practical backhaul link conditions, our scheme significantly outperforms the autonomous global precoding (AGP) scheme in terms of BER performance.

Vector network analyzers (VNAs) have become one of the indispensable tools in various fields, such as medicine, material, geology, communication, and etc, due to the capacity of measuring and analyzing the response of the object under test. Conventional VNAs, commonly based on mixing architecture, have to make compromises among accuracy, dynamic range, and bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a wideband photonic vector network analyzer (PVNA) based on wideband direct photonic digitizing. Ultrastable optical trains directly undersample the response signals from objects under test, followed by electrooptic conversion and quantization, obviating the intricate downconversion procedures in traditional VNAs. Adopting existing commercial devices, the proposed PVNA can not only extend the measurement frequency range to 110 GHz or higher but also achieve a high linearity and accuracy performance. To validate the theoretical analysis, we establish an experimental PVNA, realizing a measurable frequency span of up to 40 GHz and a dynamic range of more than 120 dB. A measured scattering parameters of a bandpass filter The experimental result is well consistent with that of a commercial network analyzer.

This paper investigates a three-layer IoT-fog-cloud computing system to determine the optimum workload and power allocation at each layer. The objective is to minimize maximum per-layer latency (including both data processing and transmission delays) with individual power constraints. The resulting optimum resource allocation problem is a mixed-integer optimization problem with exponential complexity. Hence, the problem is first relaxed under appropriate modeling assumptions, and then an efficient iterative method is proposed to solve the relaxed but still non-convex problem. The proposed algorithm is based on an alternating optimization approach, which yields close-to-optimum results with significantly reduced complexity. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm compared to the exhaustive search method. The latency gain of three-layer distributed IoT-fog-cloud computing is quantified with respect to fog-only and cloud-only computing systems.

We explore the feasibility of Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication through vibrations over human skin. Using off-the-shelf motors and piezo transducers as vibration transmitters and receivers, respectively, we build a 2x2 MIMO testbed to collect and analyze vibration signals from real subjects. Our analysis reveals that there exist multiple independent vibration channels between a pair of transmitter and receiver, confirming the feasibility of MIMO. Unfortunately, the slow ram** of mechanical motors and rapidly changing skin channels make it impractical for conventional channel sounding based channel state information (CSI) acquisition, which is critical for achieving MIMO capacity gains. To solve this problem, we propose Skin-MIMO, a deep learning based CSI acquisition technique to accurately predict CSI entirely based on inertial sensor (accelerometer and gyroscope) measurements at the transmitter, thus obviating the need for channel sounding. Based on experimental vibration data, we show that Skin-MIMO can improve MIMO capacity by a factor of 2.3 compared to Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) or open-loop MIMO, which do not have access to CSI. A surprising finding is that gyroscope, which measures the angular velocity, is found to be superior in predicting skin vibrations than accelerometer, which measures linear acceleration and used widely in previous research for vibration communications over solid objects.

In this letter, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-mounted mobile edge computing network, where the UAV executes computational tasks offloaded from mobile terminal users (TUs) and the motion of each TU follows a Gauss-Markov random model. To ensure the quality-of-service (QoS) of each TU, the UAV with limited energy dynamically plans its trajectory according to the locations of mobile TUs. Towards this end, we formulate the problem as a Markov decision process, wherein the UAV trajectory and UAV-TU association are modeled as the parameters to be optimized. To maximize the system reward and meet the QoS constraint, we develop a QoS-based action selection policy in the proposed algorithm based on double deep Q-network. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm converges more quickly and achieves a higher sum throughput than conventional algorithms.

Recently, blockchain has gained momentum in the academic community thanks to its decentralization, immutability, transparency and security. As an emerging paradigm, Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) has been widely used to provide computation and storage resources to mobile user equipments (UE) at the edge of the network for improving the performance of mobile applications. In this paper, we propose a novel blockchain-based MEC architecture where UEs can offload their computation tasks to the MEC servers. In particular, a blockchain network is deployed and hosted on the MEC platform as Blockchain as a Service (BaaS) that supports smart contract-based resource trading and transaction mining services for mobile task offloading. To enhance the performance of the blockchain-empowered MEC system, we propose a joint scheme of computation offloading and blockchain mining. Accordingly, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize edge service revenue and blockchain mining reward while minimizing the service computation latency with respect to constraints of user service demands and hash power resource. We then propose a novel Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) approach using a double deep Q-network (DQN) algorithm to solve the proposed problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the other baseline methods in terms of better system utility with computational efficiency. Experiment results also verify that the trading contract design is efficient with low operation cost, showing the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

The advent of Industry 4.0 with massive connectivity places significant strains on the current spectrum resources, and challenges the industry and regulators to respond promptly with new disruptive spectrum management strategies. The current radio development, with certain elements of intelligence, is nowhere near showing an agile response to the complex radio environments. Following the line of intelligence, we propose to classify spectrum intelligent radio into three streams: classical signal processing, machine learning (ML), and contextual adaptation. We focus on the ML approach, and propose a new intelligent radio architecture with three hierarchical forms: perception, understanding, and reasoning. The proposed perception method achieves fully blind multi-level spectrum sensing. The understanding method accurately predicts the primary users' coverage across a large area, and the reasoning method performs a near-optimal idle channel selection. Opportunities, challenges, and future visions are also discussed for the realization of a fully intelligent radio.

A major challenge for video semantic segmentation is the lack of labeled data. In most benchmark datasets, only one frame of a video clip is annotated, which makes most supervised methods fail to utilize information from the rest of the frames. To exploit the spatio-temporal information in videos, many previous works use pre-computed optical flows, which encode the temporal consistency to improve the video segmentation. However, the video segmentation and optical flow estimation are still considered as two separate tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for joint video semantic segmentation and optical flow estimation. Semantic segmentation brings semantic information to handle occlusion for more robust optical flow estimation, while the non-occluded optical flow provides accurate pixel-level temporal correspondences to guarantee the temporal consistency of the segmentation. Moreover, our framework is able to utilize both labeled and unlabeled frames in the video through joint training, while no additional calculation is required in inference. Extensive experiments show that the proposed model makes the video semantic segmentation and optical flow estimation benefit from each other and outperforms existing methods under the same settings in both tasks.

Intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) capable of reconfiguring their electromagnetic absorption and reflection properties in real-time are offering unprecedented opportunities to enhance wireless communication experience in challenging environments. In this paper, we analyze the potential of IRS in enhancing cellular communications for UAVs, which currently suffers from poor signal strength due to the down-tilt of base station antennas optimized to serve ground users. We consider deployment of IRS on building walls, which can be remotely configured by cellular base stations to coherently direct the reflected radio waves towards specific UAVs in order to increase their received signal strengths. Using the recently released 3GPP ground-to-air channel models, we analyze the signal gains at UAVs due to the IRS deployments as a function of UAV height as well as various IRS parameters including size, altitude, and distance from base station. Our analysis suggests that even with a small IRS, we can achieve significant signal gain for UAVs flying above the cellular base station. We also find that the maximum gain can be achieved by optimizing the location of IRS including its altitude and distance to BS.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology to meet the ever-growing data traffic of vehicular communications. Unfortunately, more frequent channel estimations are required in this spectrum due to the narrow beams employed to compensate for the high path loss. Hence, the development of highly efficient beam tracking algorithms is essential to enable the technology, particularly for fast-changing environments in vehicular communications. In this paper, we propose an innovative scheme for beam tracking based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), improving the mean square error performance by 49% in vehicular settings. We propose to use the position, velocity, and channel coefficient as state variables of the EKF algorithm and show that such an approach results in improved beam tracking with low computational complexity by taking the kinematic characteristics of the system into account. We also explicitly derive the closed-from expressions for the Jacobian matrix of the EKF algorithm.

This paper considers an emerging cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) architecture for surveillance or monitoring applications. We consider a scenario where a cellular-connected aerial user equipment (AUE) periodically transmits in uplink, with a given data rate requirement, while moving along a given trajectory. For efficient spectrum usage, we enable the concurrent uplink transmission of the AUE and a terrestrial user equipment (TUE) by employing power-domain aerial-terrestrial non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), while accounting for the AUE's known trajectory. To characterize the system performance, we develop an analytical framework to compute the rate coverage probability, i.e., the probability that the achievable data rate of both the AUE and TUE exceeds the respective target rates. We use our analytical results to numerically determine the minimum height that the AUE needs to fly, at each transmission point along a given trajectory, in order to satisfy a certain quality of service (QoS) constraint for various AUE target data rates and different built-up environments. Specifically, the results show that the minimum height of the AUE depends on its distance from the BS as the AUE moves along the given trajectory. Our results highlight the importance of modeling AUE trajectory in cellular-connected UAV systems.

Blockchain technology with its secure, transparent and decentralized nature has been recently employed in many mobile applications. However, the mining process in mobile blockchain requires high computational and storage capability of mobile devices, which would hinder blockchain applications in mobile systems. To meet this challenge, we propose a mobile edge computing (MEC) based blockchain network where multi-mobile users (MUs) act as miners to offload their mining tasks to a nearby MEC server via wireless channels. Specially, we formulate task offloading and user privacy preservation as a joint optimization problem which is modelled as a Markov decision process, where our objective is to minimize the long-term system offloading costs and maximize the privacy levels for all blockchain users. We first propose a reinforcement learning (RL)-based offloading scheme which enables MUs to make optimal offloading decisions based on blockchain transaction states and wireless channel qualities between MUs and MEC server. To further improve the offloading performances for larger-scale blockchain scenarios, we then develop a deep RL algorithm by using deep Q-network which can efficiently solve large state space without any prior knowledge of the system dynamics. Simulation results show that the proposed RL-based offloading schemes significantly enhance user privacy, and reduce the energy consumption as well as computation latency with minimum offloading costs in comparison with the benchmark offloading schemes.
